>Getting stoned
You awake at around 9 o'clock the next morning. You feel a bit groggy, having slept in a bit, and need to stretch out before you are ready to head up to the deck. You don your shirt and boots, then move over to the chest to put on your coat. The saber you've been gifted is still attached to your belt, and just needs some adjusting to be worn properly. The rifle from all those years ago rests within the large wooden chest, next to a box of shells.

You open the chest and place the saber inside. In it's stead you take the rifle, sliding it into a hip holster and pocketing the box of shells before locking the chest again and heading up the steps to the upper deck.

The morning light is bright and warm, and a few of the crew have elected to go barechested to better absorb its bright rays. The ship seems to be on a good course without you, and it might be okay to let it be and get something to eat.

You walk over to the kitchen door and enter. The smell of hotcakes and smoked sausage fills the air. It seems the cook is better at breakfast than he is at dinner. You enter the chow line and listen to the smalltalk between the crewmen. Apparently, something has gotten Riley all rustled, and he's acting even creepier than usual. After you are served, you look for a place to sit. You spot Donna across the room, but just as you are about to approach, Riley appears and hops into the seat across from her. He grins as he talks to her, and whatever he's saying seems to trouble her a little.

You approach casually and set your tray down next to them. Riley looks up at you as you sit, and for a split second you swear his smile turns to a sneer. By the time you're seated, however, he's back to his usual self. Donna looks at you concerned, but says nothing. Riley is the first to speak.

"Hey, man! Hope you slept well. Only three more weeks in the air and we'll hit land. Three more long, miserable, possibly insanity inducing weeks."

Riley grins and chuckles softly. Donna looks nervous. You finish your meal and make some smalltalk with the others. When you're done, Riley seems intent on sticking around, and when Donna tries to make a play at leaving, a quick glance at him changes her tune. You yourself should worry about correcting the ship's course, and yet it's hard to leave the two of them alone.

You slide your tray off to one side and cross your arms, leaning back in your seat. There is a clear moment where the three of you wonder what the next play will be. Finally Riley settles in, followed by Donna.

"You know, it was really a stress killer to get into that brawl yesterday. There must have been four dozen of those bastards all together after you sank the first ship. No idea how many of em I did in myself. I always lose count when I get in the moment." He pulls one of his pistols from beneath his arm and begins spinning it on his finger again. "How about you, man? Do you remember how many people you put down in the war?"

"Riley is acting like a bigger psycho than usual. He's been roaming around the ship, asking people weird questions out of nowhere, and none of the answers seem to satisfy him. The swabbie says he saw him burning himself with the barrel of his pistol last night. I don't think it's true, but it still worries me." Donna looks up, wiping her nose and leaning on one hand. Donna smiles at your response. She stands and sighs, telling you that she needs to get back to work or the machinists will just get drunk and fall asleep again. You wish her good luck and the two of you walk out of the kitchen together, and then part ways. You make your way down to the cockpit, sliding down the ladder and landing gently at the bottom. Riley stands at the wheel, leaning on it and staring out the windshield. You tell him that you'll take it from here, and upon hearing your voice he slowly spins around. He leans back on the wheel and grins at you. Something about the way his fingers on his right hand move is off.

"You know, you're not a young guy anymore. I bet you're starting to slow down with age. Not that that's anything to be ashamed of. It happens to everyone."

It's now you see his hand move up to his underarm with incredible speed. He seems to be going for his pistol.

Seeing this, and knowing you won't be able to draw and load before he can draw and cock, you utilize an old parlor trick from your youth. In one swift motion, you remove and toss your coat at Riley, occupying his line of sight and giving you a few precious moments to pull the rifle from your hip holster, and load a shell into the chamber. By the time Riley swats the coat aside, the two of you stand across the room from each other, barrels primed and ready. Riley's usual grin is gone, replaced with a dead iron look of a killer. It's the look you saw from marines as they ran off to die.

The silence between you lasts a while longer. There's no sign of it ending soon.

You turn the rifle to the side and squeeze the trigger, letting off a shell. A compact ball of flame rips through the air and collides with a metal support beam, splashing on impact and heating the beam to the point that it glows just slightly. The roar of the gun causes you to flinch just slightly, but Riley shows no sign of doing the same. As the flame hits the opposite wall, Riley too squeezes the trigger of his gun. However, his does not ring out as yours did. There is only a metallic click. Your eyes widen as you ponder this, and Riley lets the pistol droop in his hand. He swings out the cylinder, revealing 5 empty chambers. They were never loaded. His grin returns, slowly as he savors the moment.

"Good. That's good. You may not have speed, but you've got experience to make up for it. I'm glad."

"Of course not. What good would it do me to have a dead pilot when we're floating over the Red Sea?" He stows the pistol and walks over to the co-pilot seat. "No hard feelings I hope. I just wanted to be sure that you'd be ready if things came to their worst possible conclusion." He sits. "There are deadlier men than me in the world, you know. I know what everyone says about me. I'm loopy, I'm a psycho, blah blah blah. Whether I am or not is for a doctor to say. All I know is that I've seen shit that would make most people's skin crawl just to think about. Riley grins, but this time something about it feels more genuine. He reaches beneath his seat, and pulls out something wrapped up in leather. You approach and take control of the wheel, removing the auto locks as you watch him unravel the bundle. It appears to be a normal cleaning kit. He begins disassembling his pistols and greasing them, as well as scrubbing them near spotless. Pyscho or not, he is good at what he does.

You spend the next few minutes in relative silence. Eventually, Riley begins whistling as he works. After a few bars, you realize you know the tune.

You begin whistling along with Riley. The tune is somber, and yet unifying in it's simple tones. The long chords you form together seem to melt away all the tension in the room.

The next few days afloat go by normally. There isn't much drama after you and Riley settle things in the cockpit, and you actually get into the habit of drinking with him and Donna during dinner. There are a few times when his eccentricities get on your nerves, but you find that when you simply let the roll off your back, he's quite a mood booster. Near the second week, Riley approaches you while you're at the wheel. He appears from the hatch and slides down the ladder with a mug in his hand.

"Evening sir. How's the sky look tonight." you ignore the question. "I've been meaning to ask. You think you could teach me to fly this bucket? Properly fly it, I mean."

You step aside and allow Riley to grab a hold of the wheel. You make sure the auto locks are off, and watch as he moves the wheel. He remarks on how difficult it is to keep the wheel straight and still, and you tell him that the cause is the high altitude winds that can take the ship off course. For the most part, he seems to have the idea. He doesn't check the instruments enough, and tends to stare off into the horizon, a huge mistake that all beginners make. He also takes a had off the wheel now and then, in an attempt to move the ship at a more casual stance. Doing this too often may result in a sudden wind knocking the ship to one side.

You correct his posture, getting him to stand straight and tall, and move the wheel with his legs and back, rather than just his arms. He seems to get the jist of it, but only practice will improve him. You spend a few hours working this way, until bedtime. Feeling yourself slipping into sleep, you decide to turn in. You advise Riley to do the same, but he seems insistent on practicing a while longer.

Riley groans, but lets you switch the auto locks on. You realize that he likely has the codes to unlock it as well, but you'll just have to trust him to not sink you in your sleep. The two of you head up together and then split to find your beds.

You toss your things on top of the chest and disrobe before collapsing into your bed. You lay in the dark for a while, eyes shut, waiting for sleep to come. A few minutes later, you hear rain outside. It almost passes you by, but you recall that there was no sign of clouds on the instruments a few hours ago. Then again, you spent most of the past few hours focusing on Riley, and it's possible you simply didn't read them. The rain doesn't sound too heavy either, and seems likely to pour itself out in a hour or so.

You drag yourself out of bed and pull on your trousers and boots, forgoing the rest in favor of speed. The men on deck seem undeterred by the rain, simply taking cover beneath what they can while they chat. You drop down into the cockpit and approach the helm, and begin reading what the instruments tell. There is a storm skirting your path. If you maintain speed and direction, you should be fine. Alternatively, you can bring the ship up to maximum altitude. This will burn a great amount of fuel, but it should remove all danger from the situation.

You remove the locks and begin funneling power to the lift engines. The heat rises, and you are forced to drain power from thrust to keep things level. It's clear that this ship was not made for fancy flying. You reach the ape of your available airspace, and reapply locks. It's long past midnight now, and you're barely able to stand upright without swaying. You stagger to bed and collapse, boots and all.

You don't wake until lunch the next day, and when you do, there is a ruckus outside. Some people are yelling about something, but the walls muffle the sound.

You pull on your shirt and coat, and attach the rifle and holster to your hip before heading up. On deck, the crew seem to be agitated by something, pacing back and forth and whining so loud and constant that you can't pick one out alone. You spot Donna in the crowd, speaking to some of them, and approach her. When she notices you, she shoos them away and strides over.

"Something weird happened last night. We can't see the water. Riley says he didn't touch anything, but he's the only one besides you who knows how to work the helm." you scratch your chin and move over to the rail, peering over the side of the ship. A thick blanket of fog sits below, blocking your view of the ocean. It poses no immediate danger, but descending into it could increase risk of crashing. Staying at this altitude will guzzle more fuel than you can afford, however. You look over to Donna, who seems to be waiting for you for answers.

"Get down there and fix it, you ass. And don't come back out until we're back on schedule." She stomps off to the engine room. You rub you sore shoulder and follow her order. You walk to the side of the ship and peer out over the rail, looking for any sign of the light. There is nothing. You step away and begin making your way to the cockpit again. You touch down at the bottom of the ladder and call to Riley, letting him know about the change in speed.

The ship swings violently to one side, and the two of you are sent flying into the wall. You slide back down to the floor, and try to regain your feet. The ship swings to the other side, and the process repeats. The PA comes on, and you hear the voice of one of the crewmen.

"There's something coming out of the water! It's rocking us back and forth! It's too close to hit with the guns! All men take arms and- huh? Ge!-" The sound cuts out, and is replaced by a low, organic tone that makes the ship tremble. Riley draws a pistol and begins making his way to the deck.

You get to your feet, fighting the swaying of the ship as you dash for the wheel. you hear the hatch seal behind you as Riley reaches the deck. You grab hold of the wheel and check the readouts. All systems are fine, but whatever is in the water is simply overpowering your engines. You need to act quickly. You divert all power to:

A) Speed

You get the ship moving upward at current speed, hoping to leave the reach of whatever has it's hands on you. The instruments report successful climb, and you breath a sigh of relief. Suddenly, the ship lurches, and you feel your weight lifted up off the ground. As you come down, you hear the tone again. Something slithers up the windshield, log and grotesque and covered in spines on one side, and suction cups on the other. You try to move higher, but even at full power you are being pulled down toward the sea. The PA comes on and Donna speaks.

"We're being dragged into the drink! Everyone to lifeboats, abandon ship!"

You ignore the order and continue to fight against whatever has grabbed a hold of the ship. More upward thrust is impossible, but you think it might be in the cards to wriggle out of it's grip. You begin spinning the wheel wildly, getting the rudder to sway ship back and forth. It works, and you feel the ship moving from side to side. The tentacle at the window begins whacking against the windshield, attempting to break it open. You see cracks beginning to develop, but still you struggle to free yourself.

The PA system sounds a low tone, signaling the release of the first life boat. It is followed by three more. You hear shouting from above, and then the hatch behind you opens up. You turn your head to see Donna reaching down into the cockpit.

"What the hell are you doing you moron? This bucket is going down, we need to get to a lifeboat!"

You attempt to speak, but are cut off by the shattering of glass. The tentacle reaches into the room and trashes around, looking for something to grip.

You pull your rifle from the holster on your leg. With one hand on the wheel, you swing the lever down and load the last shell inside to the chamber. When you squeeze the trigger, a ball of flame shoots out and hits the tentacle dead on. The flame splashes and you hear the same organic tone, only now higher pitched, and accompanied by the smell of something cooking. Donna is still shouting, but she is incomprehensible over the cry of the monster.

You reach into your coat pocket and grab the box of shells. Before you can load them, however, the tentacle lashes out and wrap around you quick as a whip. You struggle against it, but with both arms restrained by it's mighty grip, you have no course of action but to follow its will. You hear Donna shouting, followed by gunfire. A fire shell grazes your ear, burning it along with some of the hair on your head.

You are pulled out of the front of the ship, and are able to look back and see the hull being pulled down into the Red Sea. It's engines still struggle to keep it aloft, but the beast, still hidden by fog, won't allow it. You look down and see yourself approaching the water. You shut your eyes and hold your breath, praying for a miracle.

The miracle comes in the form of Riley, who seems to have also abandoned his hopes of escape and jumped onto one of the front guns. Loud, precise bangs echo through the air as shells pummel the tentacle that grasps you. Suddenly you are falling, as the grip of the tentacle loosens. You are able to free yourself just before hitting the icy water.

You awake soaked, freezing, and coughing up seawater. Your vision is blurry at first, as you feel around. Wet sand surrounds you. You find your knees, then your feet, and stand. You look around. Thankfully, a full moon aids your vision as you scan the area. You are on a strange beach. The sky is clear and full of stars. You realize as you look around, that there is something in your hand. The rifle, gripped tight in a hand nearly frozen, is soaked but serviceable. With some cleaning, it will be just as good as ever.

You don't know what hour it is, or even what day. You are freezing, starving, and ready to collapse. There are chunks of twisted steel and broken wood along the length of the beach. Inland, there are some cliffs that you may be able to scale with care.

A) Climb the cliffs
B) Build a shelter from ship parts

You limp across the beach gathering chunks of the ship and dragging them toward each other in order to build a passable shelter. It is extremely difficult, but in the end you manage, and collapse inside. It isn't as warm as you'd like, but it keeps the breeze out. You soon find yourself drifting off to sleep.

You awake after sunrise. The water has receded a bit. You still feel hungry, cold and tired, but you have some of our strength back. Outside your meager shelter, there are patches of warm, soft, dry sand.

A) Try to rest better on the warm sand

You begin searching the area for anything edible. There are no plants below the cliffs, but you can make out grass growing above, and can safely assume there is more green to be found. Down by the water, you find several small fish. You recognize them by color, and think you can eat them raw so long as you don't have more than a few.

With great effort, you manage to catch half a dozen fish, then tear off their heads and eat them whole. They are chewy, but the bones are soft and easy to swallow, and they come with a very satisfying salty taste. You could see yourself getting hooked on these. As a bonus, while scanning the water, you come across three shotshells. Whether they were from the box you have with you during the event, you don't know. There are two fire shots and a jet shot, which you pocket for now. That taken care of, you turn your attention to the cliffs. You clothes are dryer now, but it might be easier to climb if you drop your boots and coat.

A) Go as you are
B) Remove excess weight

You dump your boots and coat, leaving them atop your shelter to dry in the sun. Then, you begin climbing. Your free toes make it a bit easier to find footholds, and he loss of your coat lightens the burden noticeably. You reach the top, hard of breath but still energetic. Before you lies a stretch of trees, that extend deep inland. The island must be at least a few miles wide. You think you can hear animals further in, but they aren't calls you're familiar with.

You enter the treeline carefully, keeping your wits about you. The sound of the wind through the trees is relaxing, and the wind itself carries animal and bird calls. There is no way of knowing where the calls originate due to the position of the trees, but you are sure you're getting closer.

Eventually you come to a clearing. Some sort of fat animal is hunched over in some tall grass, huffing and puffing.

You kneel down and watch the creature, to ascertain it's nature. It doesn't move very much, restricting itself to subtle twitches. In fact, if you didn't know better, you'd almost think it was asleep.

You continue to watch the creature as it lays in the grass. It continues to move in slight, awkward twitches. You begin to grow bored. That is, until you hear it grunt. The noise is only alarming in how human it sounds when you first hear it. You watch as the creature begins to move through the grass, slow and lumbering. It manages a few yards and then collapses again, groaning. You're sure it's human, perhaps another survivor of the wreck.

A) Approach stealthily

You stand and approach slowly, careful not to make too much noise. You move through the tall grass, setting each foot down gently so as not to slip. This gentle movement betrays you when you snap a twig beneath your foot, which due to your soft step to test the ground went undetected. The snap isn't very loud, but the suddenness is enough to startle the creature. It shifts rapidly, and you see something jut out from it as you work to correct your footing.

"Shit! back off!" A voice cries out, followed rapidly by a loud roar and then searing pain. You collapse to the ground, shouting in pain. Your fatigue drains you faster than you could have expected, and combined with the shock, causes your vision to blur and the world to go dull around you.

The birdbeast lies dead before you. Your rifle smokes, and so does the corpse. You breath heavily, and no longer hear the shrill cries of its ilk. You drop to your knees and hands, feeling your whole body cry out in agony. The job is still not done, however, and you gather up just a little more strength to drag yourself out of the wrecked ship and into the open. You pull the flare gun from your pocket, and load the flare. The black smoke of the ship will divert rescue, but hopefully the flare will be enough to draw the attention of your comrades. With a weak arm you raise the gun skyward, and let fly.
