Properly this time!

Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the roll of a young mage, labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. You've just arrived at the city of Anthus, after being robbed by bandits on the way, to spend the vast fortune you found in an old Hiacian ruin. Currently, you're at the Academy of Anthus, apparently the place where Vatis are trained in this kingdom, to buy some magical tomes and scrolls to study at your leisure.

You decide that you're interested in all the books, but would like to get them priced first. You carefully stack all of your findings along with the two books gifted to you by the Archmagos, then start making your way towards the front desk. The woman there sees you coming and clears a space on the desk for you to set your books down. Before she can start taking them off the pile you quickly explain.

“These two are a gift from the Archmagos, and he told me to tell you I get a twenty-five percent discount off the total.” She raises an eyebrow, but doesn't say anything. Instead she quickly scans through the five other books you picked out and sets them out.

“With your twenty-five percent discount, the Beginner's Guides are fifteen gold, each. The Blast scroll is twenty-three. The Leaping scroll is thirty-five. The Grandmaster's Journal is sixty.”

Well damn, you're just a few gold shy of being able to buy the whole lot. Well, just a few gold shy if you didn't also need to buy Chryssa something of her request, pay for lodgings, and buy food and water for the trip to Licae. You also need to pay that blacksmith ten gold when he delivers your weapon, and probably set some aside for future shopping.

It's kind of depressing to see your formerly vast fortune divided up piecemeal and ever so slowly bled off, but it's not like this is the last big payoff you'll ever get.

>Total Gold: 138
>Total Cost: 147
(1/2)
>>
Last time there was a stalemate between two options.
>Keep everything EXCEPT the Grandmaster's Journal (Leaving you with 51 gold)
>Drop both of the beginner's guides, keep the Journal (Leaving you with 21 gold)

Thus, we'll hold a (hopefully) brief revote now.

Fuck yeah, Banished Quest. Been a lurker up until now.

>Drop both of the beginner's guides, keep the Journal (Leaving you with 21 gold)

Theres got to be a reason that the journal is so pricey and rare, right?

Inb4 Evil Ghost comes out after reading it and murders us with 2spooky claws.
>>
>>30506867
>Drop both of the beginner's guides, keep the Journal (Leaving you with 21 gold)
Eh, you saif the beginner's guides are a dime a dozen, so ya.

>Drop both of the beginner's guides, keep the Journal (Leaving you with 21 gold)

Remember guys, lest thread OP confirmed that the beginners guides were common as shit

the grandmaster journal is one of a kind
>>
>>30506867
do we have to buy them?
Can't we just rent? Or can we get money back if we bring them back?
Why the hell are we buying in the first place when we are going to stay here for 3 days? We can simply peruse them in the library.
Can we trade for the books we have? The ones we are finished with?

Anyway go with the cheaper option.
>>
>>30506970
How big is the journal anyway?
Can't we just copy it?

I do hope we can sell them back once we're done with them
>>
>>30506970
You can return books for 60% of the fee you paid, up to a week after you buy them (It's flat out extortion, really. They're bending you over a barrel with these prices). Only faculty and students can borrow books from the library at no cost.

You could trade in the books you have for a negotiated fee, absolutely. You could also try to sell them the old Hiacian scroll describing the mint and its contents, although that would likely be a hard sell considering anyone within their right mind would loot it and you're throwing around quite a bit of cash.

>>30507011
The Journal is several hundred pages long. You doubt you could copy it within a week's time, but you could probably read it in a few days.
>>
I bet we can learn half of that shit by attending classes for 3 days or exchanging expertise with other mages.

Seriously guys
don't waste entire fortune enough to start a midrange business for things we could get for free or fraction of the cost
>>
Oh, and
>Writing for drop the Beginner's Guides
>>
>>30507054
Only faculty and students can borrow books from the library at no cost

Then become a student or a teacher. The archmagos straight up offered that.
Maybe an 'honorary' teacher or whatever. So that we are not bound to this place. A donation of tomes and money could help us get stuck position
>>
>>30507073
just wait a second

Can't we read them in the library? Wet could read a lot in 3 days and save some money
>>
>>30506867

>Keep everything EXCEPT the Grandmaster's Journal (Leaving you with 51 gold)
>>
>>30507150
The section of the library where they keep the tomes you found are usually off-limits to guest, the only reason you were let in is because the Archmagos personally escorted you there. Anything you don't buy will go back into the restricted section.
>>
>>30507055
>>30507098
We're not pressed for money, guys. We have adventuring to do and a ruin that'll probably be cleaned out if we wait too long.
We already have top-notch gear and a full compliment of equipment/supplies; what do you want to save money for?
>>
You think on it good and hard for a few minutes, eventually deciding you don't need the Beginner's Guides. You could certainly get them somewhere else and you might be able to get them cheaper. You separate the two books out of your pile, and start counting out a hundred and seventeen gold. “I'll just take these three then, the scrolls and the journal.”

As you count out the money, the woman sitting at the desk at first seems hesitant, as if she doesn't quite believe that you carry more than fifteen hundred silver around you just as pocket change, spending money. When you push the neatly piled stacks of gold towards her she quickly counts them out and places them into a rather ornate looking lockbox, clearing her throat. “Well then... I suppose they're yours. You can return them any time over the next week for sixty percent of your money back. Assuming they're not damaged, of course.”
>New Wealth: 327 Silver, Average. Many things are simply too expensive for you to afford.

You carefully arrange your new books into your courier's bag, and take a look at what you might be able to sell to recoup some of your losses. You'll probably be back in a few days to return these books, but you still had shopping to do and it might be best to replenish the coffers a bit.

Are there any books or scrolls you've finished you'd like to sell to the library?
(Options in next post)
>>
>>30507209
and if we take up on archmagos offer and become a student or a teacher?
Hell, why can't we simply talk with other vys users and exchange skills and knowledge? Except for the grandmaster journal, the ready seem to be viable to be taught by others.

Also, does that mean we can use the regular section at any time?

You pull the Fire Priest's Journal and three scrolls out of your bag, laying them out in front of the woman. “I'd like to sell these three items. They're written in a dialect of ancient samjan but anyone who can read modern samjan shouldn't have too much trouble with it.” You explain a little bit about the Fire Priest's journal to the woman, since that's far too long for you to read aloud, but the other three items you read through in their entirety since they're short before setting each one back down.

The woman immediately pushes away the letter and the mint report. “I don't think we need the letter, there's no real substance there. I'm sure you have already cleared the mint out, though that would've been immeasurably valuable.” She sounds somewhat snide, you don't like that tone she used... even if she is right! “But this journal could be incredibly useful for higher level fire mages. Especially for masters trying to reach grandmaster. The missive is also interesting purely from a historical standpoint.”

She pauses for a moment, sizing you up before making her offer. “The Academy would be willing to offer you forty gold for the journal, and five for the missive.”

>Acceptable, get the cash.
>Try to negotiate the price higher. (Roll 3d10)
>Try to sell her the mint report. (Roll 3d10)
>>
Op can you answer this? >>30507308
Can we come to the guest library at any time?
Could we join the Academy either as a student or a teacher. What would that mean? Would we have to stay in this city all the time or could we regularly go for week or two long ruin "archeology expeditions"?

>>
Rolled 2, 7, 5 = 14

>>30507628
Try to negotiate a higher price

Don't forget we can use vys to improve rolls. Going from regular success to great success is also important. The previous thread it was not done when we had the opportunity
>>
>>30507643
You can visit the guest library any time, yes. It's mostly historical text though and more basic magical theory. Of course, you might find a gem if you look hard enough.

If you joined the academy, it'd likely be as an Archeologist or as an Itinerant Professor.
If the former, you'd learn all the latest about discovered ruins, but you'd be expected to take students with you to ruins and you'd also be expected to donate most of your findings to the Academy.
If the latter, you'd need to stop by at least every month, probably more often, to teach students some of what you know and probably make a small but significant donation to the academy whenever you make a juicy find in a ruin.

Basically it'd tie you down to one location until you resigned the position, and you doubt they'd take kindly to you signing up just to read their library and then ditching immediately after you've learned all you can.
>>
>>30507709
I don't know. Why not?
We could use this city as a downtime in between adventuring. Like, after a successful expedition we could stay here for few weeks studying more magic. if we use time skips it is no loss for us.
>>
So now we're onto he Bowery to buy Chryssa something nice. I don't think we should buy a crossbow unless we make a bunch of cash from selling these.

After that it is onto Licae to loot and pillage.

Then we come back and get our spear.

Then we visit old man sadik to sell/buy shit.

Then onto the Water temple to both pillage, and to have a quiet place to grind away at all these scrolls and work on mastering Water.

There are lots of ruins around which we can pillage for at least a year to come, right?
I think the professor thing is a really good opportunity while we stay in the region. Too bad you said this AFTER we gave away a fortune. We could have used a fraction of it for getting the position. God damn impatient players.
Still, I think we should entertain the idea.

He specifically stated that it is not possible.

You start to speak “Now you can't just discount this mint report so offha-” She cuts you off with a glare. “Do you think I'm stupid, sir? Are you insulting me intelligence? That report is worthless and you know it.” With a sigh, you stuff the report back into your bag. Maybe you can sell it to some drunk or a yokel as a treasure map... actually that's not a bad idea.

“Fine, fine. I apologize if I offended you.” She crosses her arms in front of her chest, seems she's not convinced. You channel a little vys, feeling yourself refreshed, more confident, more charismatic. “But you really are undercutting me on these two-” You say while gesturing to the coded missive and the Fire Priest's Journal. “-The priest's journal has techniques for meditation most fire mages probably wouldn't even think of. They suicidal, down right insane, but the priest describes in detail the results of each method of meditation and how his power grew as a result. It's the full story of a man's journey from novice to grandmaster. It's invaluable. I wouldn't take a silver less than sixty gold for it.”

(1/2 or 3)
>>
>>30508242
Read the archives before joining a quest.

You seemed to have swayed her, to some extent. She eyes the journal curiously. “As for the missive, where else are you going to find a report that shines such a light on the fall of the Hiacian Empire? My theory is that it should be read 'Don't hesitate. Kill Emperor. Army not problem'. Not only does it implicate the commander of the fort, but the army as a whole! Any historian would salivate to get his hands on it. I demand at least thirty gold for it.” You state confidently.
>Vys Pool: (10/12)

She thinks it over for a moment, before reaching down to the same lockbox she just put away the gold you spent. “Fine, you have a point. Fifty for the journal, and fifteen for the missive.” She glares at you. “Thirty is just greedy, WE wouldn't even sell if for thirty.”
>New Wealth: 1302 Silver; Wealthy, very little is out of your price range.

The woman picks the scroll and the journal up, placing them gently in holding racks behind her. It's at this time that Chryssa comes marching up with an annoyed look on her face. Which you can only assume means she must be furious. “I have no clue how you understand any of that nonsense they write in those books. I couldn't understand a single word of that gibberish. Lets get out of this decadent, obtuse-” She trails off into her native tongue after that, but you can only assume she's debasing the value of magical knowledge further.

You decide you ought to say goodbye before you leave. It's only polite, after all. He let you into the Reserved Section and he is a fellow aghtaki. “We'll leave in just a moment, Chryssa. I'd just like to quickly say my farewells to Suresh before we leave.” She folds her arms in front of her chest and stalks off. “I'll be waiting outside with the guar when you're ready to leave this den of lies and deceit.”

Well, she really is quite angry. Still you can make it up to her later, and you are buying her a gift as soon as she finds something she likes. She'll get over it.

You exit the library via the actual exit, rather than through some cliché bookcase secret passage, and then you make for the stairway up to the Archmagos' chambers. You make your way up the winding staircase to the simple oaken door and knock three times before entering. As before, you hear a quill scrawling across paper from the landing above you. Suresh calls out. “One moment! Take a seat if you'd like!” While a chair weaves itself out of vines near-by. You gladly seat yourself.

It isn't long before he makes his way down the stairs and you greet each other once more by bowing. “Reconsidered my offer, or just come to say farewell to an old Vatis?”

Maybe I am since I keep beliving that /tg/ is full of intelligent people but get proven otherwise almost every single quest.

Did you read how much ~130 gold is worth? It is enough to build a villa and fully staff it. Up to couple millions of real life dollars worth.
You let hundreds of thousands of real life dollars go for some uncertain gain. Something we already put off for SEVERAL DAYS. For something we weren't in a hurry to begin with but when we get an opportunity to earn extra ton of money for practically nothing we are suddenly being extremely late for something. And the effort to gain that money would be negligible.
Like these extra 3 hours would change anything.

You decide you've got people waiting on you and things to do, you can swap stories next time you visit. “I'm afraid I am pressed for time, friend, but I wanted to thank for escorting me to the library and giving me the opportunity to purchase the books I did. I believe I will learn much from them.” You bow once more, and he pats you on the shoulder once you've straightened. “Do not mention it! Really, any time you'd like to come and visit the doors are open. I wish you the best of luck.” You respond in kind, and then make your leave.

When you get outside Chryssa is waiting by the guar, as she said she would. She seems to have calmed down, at least somewhat. She's feeding her guar jerky (which, you note, is made from guar. Isn't that cannibalism? Oh well, that's neither here nor there) and patting its flank affectionately. When you approach she wipes her hands off on her robes and nods to you in acknowledgment. “Shall we leave then? I am eager to get back to the markets.”

>Offer to teach her the basics of magic, if she'd like.
>Agree, head to the bowyer.
>Agree, look for an armorer
>Write-in (Jeweler, bank, pub, restaurant, what have you.)

Ask her if she wants to go to any particular store

But even with a great success we wouldn't have gotten that much. You always ask for more than you expect to get

This and ask for her feelings on magic why she dislikes it so much just in case because offering to teach her might offend her

Man, tonight has just not been my night for questing. We started off with delays, now I'm getting pulled away to hang out with a buddy.

I could probably make it back around... 9 or 10-ish my time. That's in two or three hours. Then I would run late to try and make up for it. At least for another 4 hours after that.

Alternatively, I can run a thread tomorrow afternoon when I get back from class, I'd have around six hours to run then.

Any preference? I'll be making one more post before I go.

>Maybe I am since I keep beliving that /tg/ is full of intelligent people but get proven otherwise almost every single quest.
I'll be honest that you swayed me that 5 Vys was worth spending, but I didn't voice that because I dislike you as a person. You're antagonistic and quick to insults; I didn't want some jackoff taking a quest so seriously to feel justified.

>You let hundreds of thousands of real life dollars go for some uncertain gain.
Money in a fantasy setting doesn't have the same value as money in real life. It's easy to come by and there isn't that much to spend it on. Our gear is already top-notch, so that only leaves magic tomes and emergency/future expenses. 25 gold really isn't that much.

>For something we weren't in a hurry to begin with
>suddenly being extremely late for something.
Different thread, different people, different feelings. It's a quest, you play with other people and it can't be consistent by it's nature. Deal with it, shitcock. Or better yet, leave because nobody here likes your attitude. Take a break to learn some perspective.

I phrased a bunch of it like shit and can't convey my thoughts very well. I appreciate you saying that, but I'm honestly terrified of the whole post being torn to shreds because I can't defend it well enough.

It summed up all of my thoughts. It isn't eloquent but it work just fine.

You untie Al Gasreed from his post and mount up, Chryssa follows suit. “Yeah, lets get out of here. Is there anywhere you'd like to go?” She looks at you, and you shrug. “It's only fair, I've been leading the way so far.” She nods, and spurs her guar into a gentle trot towards the front gate of the Academy.

You catch up to her and as you ride along side she seems to come to a decision. “I would like to go to a tannery. My bow is a good bow. It was a gift from my father and it has served me well over the years. I lack armor and worry that if cornered I would be vulnerable.”

Well, there you have it. It shouldn't be hard to track down a tannery by smell alone, the places often reek of all the various materials used to tan hides. Your suspicion proves correct, and you eventually find a small shop near the edge of the sea with vats of various sizes arrayed around the property, animal hides of all sorts soaking in stewed intestines and brain matter, as well as less savory things. An elderly samja woman (easily two hundred, from your rough estimate) sits outside on a rocking chair, knitting peacefully and seemingly unaffected by the smell.

She looks to you with glassy eyes and ask in a shaking voice. “Are you my son?”

By the gods you hope this isn't the tanner.

>And fin. You can ask any questions you might have and i'll answer them when I get back, assuming the thread is still up.

Thread's archived, and I'm off for now.
