So, a few things. I may have to take a short break in here somewhere to go get food. I'll give you guys a heads up if I do, should be no more than a half hour or so. Second, the thread may run long again, I'm not sure. Seems like I owe you guys a few long runs anyway, hahaha. Archives here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989Pastebin character sheet of sorts here: http://pastebin.com/zFxWNup1 (one of these days I'll accidentally link the rollercoaster rough draft sheet... hahaha.)As usual, if you've got questions or wanna jump in without archive binging, just ask, and I'll help out if one of the guys doesn't!++You yawn, reaching for your watch to shut off the alarm. It's already woken Merlin up, that much you're sure of, you can hear her stirring across the room. While you're not aboard ship, and you're certainly not kept to any specific schedule, at least, not right now, you're trying to keep yourself to one, even if just so you get a chance at the bath before anyone else is awake and using it. The castle has someone on duty every hour of the day, of course, but you've found that being awake and moving at 05 has had good results. You grab your towel and a change of clothes- a fresh, new flight suit, one of the new desert tan ones- probably a logistics SNAFU that got that sent north, you think, though it's kind of nice, and more comfortable than your old green ones, even if it's not broken in yet. Merlin looks at your towel and the change of clothes as you leave- but doesn't say anything, still blinking slowly and trying to wake up. She's gotten a little less.... clingy, for lack of a better term, but it's a small improvement, which you'll take. Anything is better than nothing, right? 1/2 (I think)
The pre-dawn morning filters weakly through the hall windows as you head down to the bath- This early in the morning, you don't run into anyone. Even the lounge is empty, the tv off, the couches empty. It's kind of refreshing, really- there's a good thirty to forty witches here you don't know, and precious few you do. Even when Katya gets back, it won't help things, since she's bringing at least two more unfamiliar faces in. And all of them are interested in you. Maybe not on a personal level, but it makes you feel kind of uneasy. You're a fighter pilot- not a science experiment or some new animal they've just pulled out of the south American rain forests. That's what gets you, the thing about you not knowing any of them, even with them all being witches, makes no difference to you. It's that, deep down, you can't help but feel like you're on an exam table. The bath, like the rest of the castle, is empty- or, if it's not, someone's down here, fully clothed- or walked down completely naked. Normally you'd just use the showers, which not only offer privacy, but they're almost always completely abandoned. Still, just how long you want to stay down here is up for debate. Internal debate- last thing you need is for someone to find you arguing with yourself in the bath. You could use a long, morning soak- the water seems to help the worst of your joints, but at the same time, there's morning chow to take care of, then finding out what the agenda holds for today. [x] Screw it, I'll soak a while. I earned it. This is the first real bath you've been able to take in a long, long time. Too long, as far as you're concerned, which is why, after folding your clothes and setting them on one of the benches, you retreat back into the depths of the hot springs bath, back far enough that, even if someone comes in, you're well out of line of sight, hidden by the steam coming off the water. You actually wonder about the steam- the water certainly isn't hot enough to be uncomfortable, hell, it would be a little on the cold side, if it wasn't contained inside the chamber like it is. Your spot gives you a good place to relax, leaning back on a ledge along the wall. It's stable enough that you lean your head back and close your eyes for a minute, just enjoying the hot water. It really does feel like it's helping- your shoulder, usually sore in the morning and a bit stiff, feels fine, which is a welcome change. As much as you hate to admit it, maybe this posting isn't so bad for you- Merlin's getting better, and you're starting to, you think. At least, you are physically. You're able to soak for quite a while- nearly an hour, according to your watch- before you hear movement at the doorway to the bath. You're releived when Merlin calls out to you from her spot in the door- you can just barely make her out, looking for you. “F-Frank?” She says. “W-we're all sitting down for B-breakfast, if you want to come. F-french toast.”[] Yeah, I'll be out in a minute, hold on. [] I'll pass for now, kiddo, thanks.

[x] Yeah, I'll be out in a minute, hold on. “Yeah, I'll be out in a minute, hold on.” You respond, sliding off your seat and standing up. You make sure she's left the changing room The door's closed and you don't see anyone- and there's unexpected heat sources, like you'd expect from Merlin if she was hiding and trying to peep- so you figure you're good, climbing up out of the bath and grabbing your towel. Clean and freshly dressed, you grab your clothes and hygene kit before opening the door and heading out into the hall, nodding at Merlin, who's leaning on the wall next to the changing room. “H-How was the bath?” She asks, falling into step next to you. “Good, have you had a chance to take one?” You ask. “It's relaxing.” She shakes her head. “N-no, not yet. T-there's too many people h-here, one of them might see m-me.” She says. “Oh, is that what you're worried about?” You say. “Just go when we get up, I'll sit by the door for you and make sure no one comes in.”“Y-you'd do that?” She says. 1/2
“Sure. I'm sure I'd be able to get help if I thought I needed it. Maybe Slider?” She looks up at you. “S-Slider?”You nod. “Sure. Hell, I can't think of anyone better for the job, I bet she'd even bring one of her shotguns.”“M-maybe I'll try it t-tomorrow.” She says, after a second. You reach down, ruffling her hair and knocking her glasses askew. “You'll enjoy it.”She doesn't respond, instead looking at you and fixing her glasses on her face as you open the door to your room and toss your clothes inside- you'll have to deal with them after breakfast. Downstairs, you're surprised to see the Mackintoshes- Georgette and Nicholas- in the kitchen, with the squadron seated around the table there. Both of them appear pretty busy making the food, though by the looks of things they have it well in hand. Georgette turns to look at you only briefly when you walk in, nodding. “Hello Frank.” She greets. “Please, sit down. [x] Go ahead and sit down- they have this covered. You nod, taking an unoccupied seat- and noting that Merlin still manages to sit next to you, displacing one of the twins. You don't have to wait long before Georgette sets down a massive plate, stacked high with French toast. She smiles and gestures to it. “There's more coming, after that. Please, help yourselves, Nick and I will sit down in a second.”True to her word, Nick sets down a pitcher full of juice- citrus of some kind, it looks like, and another- apple. “Is that orange?” Slider asks, indicating the first. Nick shakes his head. “Pineapple, and it's from can, not fresh.”You shrug, looking at Merlin, who nods. You reach for the pitcher and pour her a glass, just before pouring one for yourself. “Canned is as good as anything we got aboard.” You say, putting it back. “and it's hard to complain.”Nick smiles. “Yeah, I remember that.” He says, pulling out Georgette's chair for her, then pushing it in after she's seated. “Has shipboard food gotten better?” You shrug. “Not sure. This beats its it silly though.” Georgette smiles, holding up her plate while Nick spears her some of the rapidly-diminishing pile of food. “You haven't even tried it yet, Frank. Are you sure?” 1/2
>>30489520Yes, and my body is all kinds of ready
You look at her. “Yep.” You say simply, reaching for the butter. “But, I will admit, I'm kind of surprised to run into you. What brings you here?” “Well,” Gerogette starts. “It's two things. Every year around this time, Nicholas and I come back to Europe to visit the memorial for the Gloire.” You wince. “Sorry, I didn't-” She laughs lightly. “It's alright. That was quite a long time ago, Frank, and the wound is long healed. But we make an effort to come back every year.” “You said two reasons, ma'am.” Ice adds, quietly. “Tabitha, what did I say about calling me that?” Georgette says. “Call me Georgette, please. And yes, I did. The other matrons here knew I healed you in Hawaii. They asked me to come here to talk with them.” “I'm sorry about that,” You say, now feeling pretty bad. She's been nothing but nice, and you got her dragged into this viper pit? Damn. She laughs. “If I didn't want to come, I wouldn't have.” She says, simply. “The mat-” She's cut off when the door opens abruptly to reveal a matron- one you don't think you've seen before, with long brown hair, shot through with gray and startlingly green eyes, dressed in the uniform of a general in the Italian air force. “There you are!” She says, looking at Ice. “Why did you-” Georgette interrupts the matron, her voice hard as armor plate. “Matron Doglio. Commander Kazanski will be out after breakfast, if you want to talk with her. You're welcome to join us, of course, if you want, but let the girl eat in peace, please.”The matron stops in her tracks. “I- yes. Sorry. “ She says, stepping back out and closing the door. [x] So is that common, or...?Slider starts a slow clap, the rest of you look at Georgette in shock- you'd never think she had that kind of hardness in her- shit, she's a better grandma than your own grandma, practically. That's about when you remember she's a vet of the eastern front that had her ship shot out from under her. She's probably pretty close to the top of the 'do not fuck with' list. You look over at Ice, taking the time to deposit another pair of slices of french toast on her plate. “So, is that common, or...?” You askShe sighs, reaching for the butter. “That's pretty average, yeah. She's mad because her girl- Gabriela or something- is supposedly a speed expert and wants to race. And the matrons think this is a great idea because... reasons.” she says, tiredly. “I haven't signed off on it yet because there's a million other things to do, like, oh, I don't know, finish the check rides you needed first. ” “So she's angry at you for doing your job?” Slider asks, around a mouthful of toast. “Guess she can stick it right up her-”“Raich.” Ice interrupts. “She's not acting much differently from any of the rest of them. It's just... getting old.” She looks at you. “The sooner we can get this started...”You nod. “The better, yeah. We can probably get another check ride in later today, everything's still fine from yesterday.”1/2

Come see me later with a flight plan and we can get it filed.”The rest of the breakfast passes pretty quickly, you end up helping with dishes as much as you're allowed to, which ends up not being much. Kenji shows up later, and Merlin can't decide between going with him or staying with you, till Slider mentions she'll be walking around with you till later. The squadron breaks up, headed to their own places in the castle, leaving you, eventually, alone with Slider in the kitchen. “You know I'm only doin this for Merlin's sake, yeah?” She says. “That kid's good for her.”“Yeah, I know.” You say. “A month ago she'd have never left.” “Exactly. You look over at her. “And why in the hell would we do that?” “Can you think of a better place to play poker?” “Oh, is that what you kids are calling it now?” She snorts. “Any time you think you can handle it, you just let me know.” She says, poking you in the ribs.“Pfft, and if I said right now?” You say, stopping suddenly and turning. She doesn't even hesistate. “I'd say we have a witch to greet and people expecting us. Plus, what happens if I'm loud? We'd attract a crowd.” “Damnit.” You respond, foiled, at least for the time being. “Later, maybe?” “Pfft. Sure, anytime loverboy.” She responds. “One of these days, I'mma actually take you up on that offer, you know.” You say, conversationally. “And you won't know what to do.” “Uh-huh. Ok, sure.” She says, sounding unconvinced. 1/3 ( I think)

The concrete tarmac out front has two witches on it- neither of whom you recognize. One has a pair of F-104S strikers and the other has what look like Tornado units. The two of them are beginning their takeoff roll as you step out into the light, placing your cap on your head and looking around. You look down and pick up a pebble- maybe half the size of a marble, and look at it before pocketing it. “FOD procedure here sucks.” You say, looking around your immediate area again. Slider shrugs. “Hard to care when we don't ever really have to worry about it.” She says. “Last time they operated steelwings from here was... shit, the war?” “Still.” You say, shaking your head. “Hey, there she is.” Slider points to a small black dot on the horizon, the noise of rotor blades just barely audible over the surf on the beaches. “So who all is inbound with her?” You ask. “Russian aggressor, Russian matron, and?” “Two aggressors.” Slider clarify, snorting. “They get two, for some reason or other that all the matrons agreed on without bothering to tell us. Not counting Katya, because she technically belongs to us for the duration, even if she's not recognized as an American witch.” You look over at her. “Sounds like this shit gets complex.” She nods. “Yeah, just a little bit. Basically, the Russians called in favors owed to them since like, nineteen oh four or some shit, which is why they're bringing in two aggressors to everyone else's one.”“Great.” You say, drily. “Any word who any of them are?” “Nope!” She responds, cheerily. “But you can bet your ass that the Navy and defense department are not going to be happy when they hear about this shit.” She shrugs. “But what can they do? Tell the witches no, go to hell?” 2/4 ( I think, oopsed a bit on spacing)
“That would be my guess, yeah. Or, you know, re-assign me. Or pull the wyvern contract or reassign it to VX four or something.” You say. Slider looks at you like you said something extraordinarily stupid.“And risk pissing off the matrons and losing better than three quarters of the academy witches coming into the military?” She says. “Not to mention, you know, the massive political fallout of fucking with the sisterhood? Multimillion dollar campaign donations go a long way.” “That's... kinda dirty.” You say, after a second. She shrugs nonchalantly. “Yeah, and? It's hardly any different than any corporation or defense contractor or anything else. We've just been doing it way, way longer.” You shake your head, electing to be quiet as the helo approaches. Finally, it slows to a halt over the concrete pad and descends, it's wheels touching the pavement gently. You can hear it start to spool down, the doors on either side coming unlatched and a crewman in suit and helmet with his visor down jumping out. 3/4
>>30493311>a chopper...the fuck did *it* come from?
Katya follows right behind him, her hair flailing wildly in the remaining rotor downwash as her bag is passed to her from inside the chopper. She turns to look at you and Slider and smiles briefly before turning back around to take a cane and briefcase handed to her by the next person out- the matron, you assume. Her appearance causes you to start. She looks like she's Katya's damn clone, practically, albeit about maybe sixteen, seventeen years older. Her uniform marks her as a general in the soviet air force, and you note that she wears a pair of uniform pants and black shoes, shined to a painful polish. Her eyes are a steel blue, and you note she's got a marked limp, using the cane and favoring her left leg. “Is that...” You wonder outloud to yourself. “Her mom, I guess. Damn, this ought to be interesting.” Slider says, walking forward. The next witch down is slight and looks very young, with short, black hair and eyes that actually remind you of Merlin's, minus Merlin's ever present glasses. She doesn't say a word when handed her bag, and stands next to the matron silently, her bag on her shoulder. The last off, you'd recognize anywhere- and gods know, she recognizes you. “My love!” She positively beams when she sees you on the pad. “You came to greet me! Ah, my love is too kind!” You've always said boredom is your enemy, and you like interesting times. Fuck the people that think it's a curse. Right now, you get the feeling those people are getting the last laugh.

>>30493453No, no, it was my fault. I've been cleaning my paintball gear, and I use petrolium jelly instead of that overpriced lube they sell for the O-rings and gaskets. Yeah, well, I also tend to wrap 550 cord around grips because when your hands got covered in paint and sweat, they get slippery. So i was melting the ends of the 550 cord of a just-wrapped grip and had some old O-rings in my lap, covered in petroleum jelly. Melty, burny 550 cord + pants + Petroleum jelly = well.... yeah.

The phone exchange was predictably busy. Every booth, every seat, filled with people from all branches and all ranks, a long line wrapping half away around the exchange itself. There were witches that Holly recognized from her Wing, and she scrambled to hide evidence that she'd been crying before they saw her. She couldn't let them see her like this, and she definitely hadn't wanted for Will to see her breaking down. Technically, witches could have exercised their priviledge to make an emergency call, but Holly felt shame for even thinking such a thing. She wasn't the only one who missed home, and she'd have reamed any witch in her wing that she caught doing that. They'd clean latrines for a decade if she had her way. She felt more guilty as the idea grew more tempting as she understood just how long she'd have to wait before she was inside the building. Sighing, Holly reluctantly took her place at the back of the line. At this rate, crew rest would be over before she even got to a- "Hollllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy~!" The Colonel did a double take at the source of her name being shouted. Chris had apparently chased her all the way from the hangars, not even slightly winded as she came sliding to a stop next to her friend. "Wh-what's up?" Holly tried to sound casual. "You do remember you have an office phone, right?" The redhead blinked at this sudden reminder: she'd totally forgotten about that in her rush to get away from Will. Chris pulled her away from the line by tugging on her shirt collar. "I saw you run away from Will so fast that I got worried something had happened!" "Something did happen," Holly said quietly, brushing her friend's hand away from her. "He's alive, Chris." "Who's alive?" The blonde's eyes widened as she put two and two together. "Wait, so that jet in Spellcaster's hangar right now-" (cont)
>>30493683(Damn. I forgot the OP pic. feelthy's gonna kill me for this.)"Is Bishop's, I watched as Spellcaster reuinited with him," Holly sighed shakily. "Part of me is upset that all of my worrying was for nothing... the other part of me is really glad that he's alive and well." She tried to smile at Chris. "I honestly kinda lost it. They were so happy to see him! And-" Holly shook her head, trying to collect herself. "And it reminded me that I haven't really gotten in touch with the folks, that I lucked out on that ambush-" "Stop," Chris interrupted her with a strong flick to the nose. "I'll be more than happy to listen to you *after* you call home." "...That actually really hurt," Holly's eyes were watering up from the surprise attack. "Thanks for pulling me out of that line-" "You have a phone call to make!" Chris shoved Holly in the direction of their barracks. "Get going you!" "Okay fine, geez!" - The warmth of the office was comforting, which did wonders for Holly's state of mind. She crashed into her seat, leaned back, and let the cushions absorb her in their soft embrace. The urge to just go to sleep right then and there was tempting. Not yet, she told herself. The parents came first. Groaning with the effort, she sat up straight, reached over to the phone, and quickly dialed her home number in Texas... then cursed when she realized that she'd forgotten the area code. Phone back on the cradle. Deep breath. Second attempt, remembering the area code first.(cont)
>>30493700The phone rang. And rang. And rang. And rang. Holly slumped in her seat. 'Well I can't expect them to be home all the time,' she tried to reassure herself, even as she felt like she'd been punched in the gut. Click. "Mom? Dad?!" she almost shouted into the reciever. "Hey there, ya'll reached the MacLeod's residence!" Mom's voice issued from an answering machine, her friendly southern twang coming in crystal clear over the line. "We're not able to come to the phone right now, and our daughter's busy doing her job up north, so please leave a message for us, and well wishes for lil' Holly after the beep!" There was some rustling over the recording. "What do I do now?" "Ya press this button here, Jeanie, it's the one that ends the recording." Dad sighed, exasperated. A bit of the Scottish side of his family always leaked through whenever he was tired of repeatedly explaining the same things to someone; Mom had never been all that good with newer electronics. "Well it's still recording, hon!" Mom complained. There was a light thump, the sound of Mom giving Dad a knock over the head no doubt. "Say something nice, it says we still have time left!" "Uh, hey, you've reached the MacLeods. We'll call you back as soon as possible... say now, what if Holly's the one who's calling? If that's you Holly, we'll keep prayin' fer ya! You've become a fine woman, we're so proud of you!" "We love you, baby girl!" Mom chipped in. "Wooooooo-" She was cut off as the answering machine beeped. (cont)
>>30493711"I..." Holly started, her voice threatening to break. She hesitated a moment longer, hoping that her parents would pick up, ask how she was doing, be grateful to hear her voice. She wanted to explain that the letter she sent last week no longer applied, that everything was fine. She wanted to tell them about Will, about getting bounced and living to tell the tale. She wanted to tell them she was still alive, wanted to talk about about the things she'd seen from on high, and from mere hundreds of feet over the earth. "Mom, Dad. It's me." She tried to sound strong, in control. She'd already made so many people worry, the last ones she wanted to do that to were her folks. "I'm okay. I'm alive and well, and I just wanted to let you know with my voice, instead of ink on a piece of paper." Another breath, shakier than before. In her mind, she demanded herself to get it together. "I guess I just missed you guys... Maybe you're tending to the farm... I'm sorry I didn't call sooner." Her eyes began to sting, and she squeezed them shut. "Th-things are rough right now, but so far we've done our job to the best of our ability. Daddy always said that was all that matters just doing our best. I haven't lost a single witch in my command!" She cradled the phone against her ear tightly, curling herself into a small ball in her chair. "There's a man I've met, Ma. M-maybe I'll introduce you to him. He's been awful nice to me, I-I'm not even sure what to make of it... I think I like him. We can talk about him maybe next time I call." She could feel her skin turning red as her voice dropped to a near whisper. "And Ma, if you get this message before Dad does... don't tell him I mentioned anything about this guy okay?" She figured she was almost out of time. She had so much more she wanted to say, there just wasn't enough time in one short voice message. (cont)
>>30493723"God, I miss you both." Hot tears ran down her cheeks. "I'm not a very good daughter if I can't spare the time to call you more often, right? So I'll call again tomorrow. Earlier if I can-" There was another click on the line. "No, yer not a good daughter if ya can't tell yer father what sort of man is tryin' to court me girl away. So who is he, and could ah take him in a fight if necessary?" Holly then heard the sound of something heavy hitting something softer, her father cursing in pain and dropping the phone to the floor. "Don't you pay any attention to him, dear." Mom's soothing voice replaced her father's. "Ma, t-tell Daddy to please stop being a jerk," Holly sobbed and laughed at the same time, elated just to hear their voices. "I thought you guys weren't home!" "We were about to have a late lunch, you know we don't answer the phone during a meal," Mom chided Holly. "But then we heard our little girl's voice on the answering machine, we practically sprinted for the phone!" "I'm so sorry I haven't called sooner!" "Unlike your father, I have a good understanding of what you're doing up north. I know you're doing the best you can," Mom reassured Holly. "And I think it's lovely you've found a boyfriend." "Moooooooooooom!" Holly stomped her foot on the floor like she did as a child when her parents teased her. "He must be something special if you're talking about him to us." She giggled for a moment. "Come on, Mom! I mean I like the guy, b-but-" Holly cut herself off as she heard a (hopefully) exaggerated gasp of disbelief from Dad, while Mom started cooing into the phone. "D-darnit, Ma...""I'm sure we'll hear more another time," Mom said, changing the subject before her daughter grew too embarrassed to stay on the line. "How are you feeling, honey? And what about your friend, Chris?" (cont)
>>30493736"I feel a lot better now, a-and Chris is still doing alright... " Holly sighed. "Look, Ma, Dad, I'm so sorry I didn't call sooner! I promise to make it up to you-" "Yew should feel sorry fer feelin' sorry!" Dad said, clearly having stripped the phone out of his wife's hands. The sounds of a short-lived scuffle erupted over the line, ending with another loud thump. "Ookay," Dad surrendered, sounding incredibly strained. "So I won't fight her boy for her hand or nothin'. Yah ken geddoff now, muh dear..." "Does Ma have you doing your bad Sean Connery impression again?" "You never used to call it bad when you were little," Dad sounded a bit hurt over the terse review of his performance, the accent gone without a trace. "So you finally found some time to chat with us, huh? You're not hurt or anything?" "I'm fine, Daddy," Holly felt herself threatening to break down again. "I almost wasn't... B-but I'm alive, unhurt. Just h-homesick. I miss you." "We miss you too, little one," Mom sounded like she was about to cry herself. "How much time do you have to talk?" "Wh-what about your meal?" "Forget the food," Dad snorted. "Talking to you is the most important thing in the world to us both and you know that. I'd sooner eat dirt than miss a chance to speak with my daughter." "Well then," Holly took a deep breath. "Have I got a lot to tell you..."---(cont)
>>30493746The goodbyes an hour later were the hardest Holly ever had to say to anyone in her entire life. They'd talked about everything that wouldn't get Holly in trouble to talk about, from her issues with Bishop and Spellcaster, her call with Georgette Mackintosh (and a little bit about how Ma could still sound like a teenager when it came to discussing her idol), Holly's brush with death, and the return of Bishop today. She'd vented to Chris about a lot of these issues, but there was nothing in the world like having your parents to talk to about the things that were really bothering you. To Holly's great relief, Mom and Dad seemed to like Wilkins, at least based on her description of the guy.Dad was a fair bit less enthusiastic in his approval, he would have to 'meet' this supposedly 'nice boy' Holly had met. He hadn't outright threatened to kill him on-sight, but he had insisted that Holly call them tomorrow so he could "politely ask a few important questions." She'd gone straight to bed, just as Mom had ordered. A Christmas present was at stake, for one thing, and for another she was physically and emotionally exhausted. Even though her Mom had insisted that the call end so Holly could grab a short nap with what remained of her crew rest, they all felt the call hadn't been long enough. In the end, the two women cried bitterly while a flustered father did his best to maintain his own bearing, trying to reassure his wife and daughter that they'd get another chance to talk soon. Chris was already in her bed, lying asleep over the covers, snoring loudly. A crudely written note on Holly's bed stated that Wilkins was making sure that the ground crews would have energy supplements waiting for everyone in the Wing at their hangar. As much as Holly wanted to wake Chris up to have that promised chat, her own bed and pillow were too soft and comfortable to pass up. She passed out within seconds of lying down.---(cont)
>>30493763Holly knew she was dreaming as soon as she found herself on horseback, exploring an alien landscape while Wilkins circled overhead in a pair of F-15 strikers. It was so absurd she wished she could stay in this dream world forever. She could hear herself trying to talk to Will, and hear his response, but they spoke in a language that was a mix of Russian, English, and something else. If it weren't for the subtitles that appeared any time they spoke, she wouldn't have been able to understand. He was complaining about how his boxer shorts were riding up, and how he didn't understand how she never felt weird flying through the sky. She'd told him to suck it up, they still had a long ways before reaching the next town. Where ever that was. Seemingly hours later, Holly felt hands on her shoulders shaking her off the horse. The sudden sensation of falling made her sit up quickly in her bed. Her forehead slammed firmly into Chris' nose, and both women yelped with surprise. "I'm up..." Holly yawned, still fighting to blink away the sleep. "We're not late are we?" "No, but I did debate letting you catch a few more winks; You're awful cute when you laugh in your sleep," Chris teased. Holly didn't rise to the bait, not immediately. "Sweet dreams?" "I was riding a horse," the Colonel smiled sleepily up at her friend, "and I saw the impossible. What do you think it means?" "Riding a horse, eh?" Chris purred suggestively. "You'd hit me if I told you what I really think-" She leaned back just enough to dodge Holly taking a swipe at her head. "Try to hit me, at any rate." "You and Mom," Holly blushed. "Gawd, we're not like that." "Was it a good phone call?"(cont)
>>30493780Holly answered the question by pulling her friend into a tight hug. After a moment of being stunned by the sudden gesture, Chris returned the hug, squeezing Holly hard enough that she had to tap Chris on the back to get her to let up. They held each other in silence for a long while. "It was what I needed," Holly whispered. "Thanks for making sure I got around to talking with them. I would probably still be in that line waiting for a phone if you hadn't come and reminded me about the office." "W-Wilkins told me you were freaking out over something, and then I started freaking out, you know? I *had* to come running for you. I wouldn't be a very good wingwitch if I wasn't looking out for my partner at all times, now would I?" Chris' voice was surprisingly raw with emotion, which she tried to disguise by slapping Holly firmly on the back before letting her go. "Make sure you talk to him before we head up for our second patrol, alright? I think he'd prefer to see for himself that you're okay." "Yeah," Holly nodded. She didn't need Chris to tell her to go see Will, she wanted to make sure that they could still watch a movie tonight after her second patrol. She also *needed* to tell him about the dream.---(cont)
>>30493780"So lemme get this straight: I was wearing strikers?" Will asked, once he managed to stop laughing long enough to catch his breath. "And you're sure this wasn't a nightmare?" "It didn't seem all that scary to me at the time," Holly grinned, happy that he'd found it as amusing as she did. "It was warm, the sky was green, you were in strikers, complaining about your boxers the whole time. Not a nightmare." "So yer dreamin' about me, huh?" "You're very fun to watch movies with, I can't help it." She looked up at Wilkins with a serious expression. "We're still on for tonight, right?" "Of course we are," Will nodded. "So long as you're not too tired." "We can even go see that crazy steelwing later, if you want," she added. "Not if it upsets you that much," he said firmly. "I'm not a big fan of seeing you like that. Are you sure you're okay?" "Well..." Holly began, bracing herself to begin explaining absolutely everything revolving around her and Spellcaster... and chickened out at the last moment. "That wasn't because of the plane. Part of it is that I'm homesick, but-" She shook her head. "It's complicated." "The pilot then?" "C-can I explain that part to you another time?" Her skin flushed at his remarkably accurate guess. "When you're ready," he smiled at her reassuringly. "Thanks." "And you did manage to get in touch with your folks?" "Yeah... It helped, a lot." "Good." Will sounded relieved.(cont)
>>30493800Their conversation had drained precious time to prepare for her second patrol, but it had been worth it. They had to quickly finish checking her weapons, but between her regular maintenance of them and his own trained eyes, it had gone smoothly. With little else to do, the pair sat down together to watch the final checks of her strikers be wrapped up by other technicians on the team. Holly already had her combat webbing strapped on over her specially-fitted lightweight flak vest. She was about as ready to go as she could be short of actually sliding into her strikers and performing preflight procedures. In the distance, other witches from the 3rd Wing arrived from their patrols, while others departed to take their place. Chris was busy making some final adjustments to her own armor and webbing, greeting incoming and outgoing witches while she did so. Many of the witches made their way over towards the Colonel, but when they saw her leaning up against Will, they elected to just wave from afar and leave the couple alone. Some of them started to whisper about her and Will as they walked off, and suddenly the cool Alaskan air felt positively sweltering. "They do have a point, I guess," Will chuckled, watching Holly hug her legs tightly against herself to try and hide her embarrassment. "I mean, you ARE dreaming of me with my pants off." "Ohmigod! Will, you are *not* helping!" Holly cried out, giving what she thought was the softest punch even to the shoulder. He only started laughing harder. Eventually, the crew working on Holly's strikers indicated that they were good to go for final pre-flight checks, before running off to assist Chris' crew with her units.(cont)
>>30493810She suddenly dreaded having to go up for this patrol. Holly found herself shaking, worse than she had before her first patrol after she'd gotten jumped by the night witch. This was supposed to be as routine as any other mission she'd flown, but she suddenly wished there could be some sort of assurance that it would be a quiet, uneventful flight. She badly wanted to see the movie with Will tonight. She wanted to be able to wake up tomorrow and call her parents first thing after breakfast. "Go time," Will grunted as he stood up, grabbing one of Holly's hands and helping her to her feet alongside of him. "Yeah," she said simply, handing Will her cowboy hat before pulling off her boots. The shakes got really bad, and she hoped that he couldn't see that. "I'll be back for this stuff." "I'll take good care of it." Will helped steady the striker stand while Holly climbed up it. She slipped her legs into the interfaces, glowed as her magic was amplified by the focus, familiar manifesting itself as it always had countless times before. Will climbed up after her a moment later to hand over her weapons. "Good luck, Holly," Will said quietly. She found herself staring directly into his eyes as she accepted her rifle with one hand, helping him guide her beloved Colt Python into her hip holster. As he started to help her fit her HUD goggles over her face, it suddenly struck Holly just how close he physically was to her, and her mind scrambled as she tried to come up with something witty, something to make them laugh again. She preferred laughing with him.(cont)
>>30493855"You're good to go, Colonel." "See you soon, okay?" She gave Will a quick, embarrassed hug; Her shakes stopped when he returned it. "Thanks for being here for me." "You're welcome." "Big Trouble in Little China tonight," Holly insisted. "And some NES." "Of course," Will gave her a pat on the back before letting her go to climb down from the striker stand. Halfway down, he stopped. "One last thing before you head on out." "Oh?" "Uhm..." He seemed to think twice about what he was about to say before looking back up at her. "I uh... don't wear boxers." "F-food for thought," she managed to reply. Red-faced, she watched him go, unable to hide her disappointment that he hadn't stayed with her longer, disappointed that time wouldn't allow for it. To her left Chris' strikers roared to life. Just outside the hangar doors, a marshall motioned for Holly to begin rolling out. As her own strikers rumbled with power, she gave Will one more glance as she started for the doors, returning his salute with one of her own. Take-off was as smooth and effortless as usual. As she lifted off the ground, Holly rolled once while a mere dozen feet off the ground before clawing for more altitude, strikers at full military power. Chris matched her maneuver, and quickly took up station almost within arm's reach of her CO. "Little show for the boys back home?" Chris asked, shortly after they broke ten thousand feet. "Maybe," Holly admitted. "You used to discourage that sort of thing." Chris whistled, getting started with their second verbal sparring match of the day. "He musta done something good to you if you're turning into an exhibitionist for him." "He doesn't wear boxers," Holly answered flatly. "He wears briefs." For once, she was on the offensive, and Chris could do nothing but sputter. The patrol was peaceful for more than just the lack of Soviets spoiling for a fight, so Holly declared it a victory twice over.>And that's it for today's chapter!
