>In case I don't see you: Good afternoon, good evening and good night

There is a loud thud in the dark. You open your eyes and sit up in your bed. There is a layer of sweat coating you, and your heart is beating loud as a drum in your chest. You take a moment to take in your surroundings. Your room is the same as always, but now covered in the think sheet of night. You wipe your forehead and try to lay back down. As you do, however, you hear a murmur from the floor above you. Your neighbors appear to be awake. This is odd, since you're sure the family above you have just as much to gain from waking early as you.

There is another thud, this time below. Everyone in the building seems quite lively. You look out the window and see that it will be sunrise in just a few hours. You really need to get back to sleep, or you'll be hazy all day.

You twist and place your bare feet on the ground, standing up as you bend back and feel your spine pop several times. You then scratch your chest as you make your way to the door. You reach it and slowly open it to look out into the hall. It's just as dark out here as in your room. Even the slight moonlight from outside doesn't do much to illuminate the area.

You hear something scooting around below, but just barely. It reminds you slightly of a cat padding around in the dark.

B) Call down the stairway

You exit the doorway of your room and shut the door behind you. You walk quietly to the edge of the steps, so as not to wake anyone else. You descend the steps slowly, trying your best to adjust your eyes to the dark. At the ground floor, you notice that the front door is open. You can feel the cold night air seeping in through the crack. On the other side of the entrance, the landlord's office door has light peeking out from beneath.

You turn and approach the office door. As you draw near, you can hear something or someone moving around inside. Footsteps, shuffling, and mumbles. When you come to it, you place your ear to the door and listen carefully. There is certainly someone occupying the room, and they don't sound too relaxed about it.

You grab the knob and twist it as you slowly open the office door. An oil lamp in the farm corner lights the room as you anter and see a figure leaning over the desk across from the door. A figure draped in black clothing pours over a pile of disorganized papers, mumbling as he does.

You step softly up to the man as he goes through the paper pile. As you come close, you notice a musky stench rising from him, as though he hasn't seen a tub in weeks.

Your foot touches a floorboard and from it rises a low creak. The figure stops moving immediately, and then whirls around to face you. Before you is a short man with unruly stubble and a mangled eye. One of his hands also appears to have been badly smashed, perhaps by some sort of machinery. There is a split second where the two of you stare at each other in disbelief, and then he utters an obscenity, just before he leans in and drives one of his feet into your lower stomach, narrowly missing your crotch. You stumble back and out the office door, falling flat on your rear as you grab at the affected area.

The man lets out a high pitched cry for help, and you hear voices from above, followed by heavy footsteps.

You scramble to your feet and slip out the front door, catching your breath as you rub your sore stomach muscles. The footsteps from inside come down and eventually find their way to the office. You leap over the stone rail to the side of the front steps, and listen as a mix of voices begin to rise from within the building. A few men seem to quarrel over something. One of them mentions the door, and you hear it swing open a moment later. You peek over the stone rail and see another, larger man, dressed in black, scanning the street. Two more men, neither of them the one from the office, emerge from the door. When you take a quick glance, one of them appears to be wielding a blade, and the other holds something that you can't see very well. With great force, you shove your victim into the approaching threat. They both go tumbling to the ground in a heap. you can hear dogs all around the neighborhood barking now, and wonder if the whole town won't be a wake in a matter of minutes.

As the two lay tangled with one another, you glance down and notice the item that your first victim held. You can see clearly now that it is a junker pistol, a device meant to hold single shotshells and fire them with very poor accuracy. Despite this flaw, missing at this range would be a feat.

Eventually though, you drive an elbow into his neck and take possession of the pistol. You shove him away with your shoulder, and point the barrel at him when he hits the ground. His friend tries to approach to help, but you turn the pistol on him when he tries to move. You have them both at bay now, but they're final comrade, the one in the office, is still out of sight.

Not wishing to risk more misfortune, you aim the barrel at the fallen man and squeeze the trigger. A jet of wind bursts from the barrel and lashes into him, tearing and drilling a hole in his chest large enough to jam your fist into. The shotshell smokes as you toss the pistol aside and turn to the remaining man. He looks at you and his comrade in disbelief. You ask him sternly about his purpose here. In place of a proper answer, he rushes at you in anger. His rage betrays him however, and you turn his assault away and knock him to the ground, where you kneel on his chest. You wrest the blade from his hand and drive it into his stomach. You watch as he writhes in pain. You then stand up and look down to see that you are covered in a splatter of blood. You recall the last of the men. He might be hiding out in the office, or worse. However, just as you turn around, you are startled to see a small boy standing near the foot of the front steps. He stares at the lifeless body of the man you shot, and you watch a small wooden marble drop out of his hand. You turn your gaze away and stoically walk back up the steps and into the building. The office door is open, and when you peer in, you find no sign of the last man. With no windows in the room, the only place he could have made off to is up the stairs, and so you decide to follow. You climb the steps cautiously, listening for a hint to his whereabouts. You respond by raising your palms up and shrugging, saying that if she dies so will he. The look on his face says he believes you. You can see his will ebbing, as he loosens his grip on the woman.

You stand aside with your hands still raised, and motion him to the door with your head. He drops the woman, who collapses in a heap on the floor, sobbing, and steps out from behind her. He scoots past her, keeping his eyes on you the whole time, and moves toward the door.

You look up to see the woman who's home you are currently invading. She sits with her arms crossed and staring at the floor. You can't blame her for being shaken, really. You cross the room, stepping over the unconscious criminal, and kneel down to talk to her. She looks up with red eyes and a bit of snot running out of her nose. You ask her if she''s hurt, to which she only shakes her head and sniffles. You ask her a few more questions to calm her down, and learn that the man broke in a few minutes ago and woke her. She panicked and tried to defend herself with a kitchen knife, but he took it from her and held her up while he tried to find a way to escape the building. He didn't take anything from her.

You tell her that all the men are taken care of, and she seems relieved. She looks over to the criminal, and you can tell she's pondering what to do about the limp body splayed out on her living room floor.

You bring him all the way down the steps, no doubt waking a few of your neighbors. You actually see one tired man emerge from his door to see you, but he doesn't seem keen to question what you're doing dragging a limp man down the stairs in nothing but your underwear at 5 in the morning.

When you finally get outside, you no longer see the young boy from earlier. All that remains of him is his wooden marble, laying on the cobblestone street. You dump the criminal out on the side if the front steps and stand up to stretch your back. You can just see the color of morning coming into the sky. You hear footsteps behind you, and turn to see the man from earlier, now wrapped in a robe, approaching you. He asks you what all this is about, and you explain the robbers and how you were forced to stop them alone, as you were the only capable person awake. He doesn't seem eager to accept your story, but the uniform and conspicuous dress of the men makes for decent evidence. You head back to your room to throw on some clothes before the police arrive. When you look in the mirror, you see the years that have stacked up on top of you dragging your skin down. Just over 35, and this is all you have.

When the uniforms finally show, they make quick work of cording off the area and marking the evidence. They seem quite eager to press you about your ability to take on armed men, and you are forced to explain to them your history in the war. Some of the younger people, gathered around to gawk at the goings on, seem to be taken aback by this revelation. They look at you like some sort of killer, which to be fair isn't really wrong. But it's not quite right either.

After some corroboration on your story by the man and woman from earlier that night, you are let off with a warning about taking such drastic measures in self defense, and the police cart off the corpses and criminals alike. When the street clears, it's almost work time, and you are sleepy enough to lay out on the road and doze off. You hear your stomach growl.

When you wake, you stuff your feet into your boots and throw on your shirt before heading out into the hallway. There, you see the landlord and the woman who you assisted earlier, talking about something. The landlord finishes up, and turns to see you. He approaches and explains that as a sort of apology for the events of that morning, he's forgiving all the overdue rent of the building. You thank him for his kindness and he goes on his way. You're prepared to write the feeling off as paranoia, until you spy something in the far corner, tucked silently in a booth. A young man in a hood, with a shock of blond hair jutting out from beneath it. He sits hunched over, taking small sips from a glass as he flips through some sort of small handbook. You look at him for a while, until he looks up and your eyes meet. You hold each other's gaze for a moment, until you hear a clacking before you. A plate of flapjacks and sausage links has arrived, and is followed soon by a mug of black coffee. You thank the bartender and look back to the booth. The man has turned his gaze back to his book, and doesn't seem eager to resume your staring contest.

You clean your plate and drain the cup before wiping your mouth and stepping down from the stool. You stride over to the booth and slide in across from the young man. He keeps his attention on his book, not even looking away when he takes sips of his drink.

A) Wait for him to look up
B) Ask him what he wants

Eventually, the awkward feeling hanging over the two of you becomes too thick, and the young man looks up. You look him straight in the eye without a word. He takes a long swig of his drink and places the cup back down.

"Fine. I'm here. Stop with the creepy stare."

You ask him why he's here, and despite his assurance that he's simply here for a drink, you press him further. He rolls his head back and sighs. "I'm sort of a recruiter. My boss has me out collecting sword arms for him. I hear you swept up a few thugs early this morning, completely nude, and I also here that you were a pilot during the war. My boss is very interested in acquiring someone with your experience, and he's willing to pay gold for a little dirty work."

A) Ask him what exactly he wants you to do
B) Tell him you're retired

"All we want is someone who can crack skulls, but isn't too dumb to play a hand of cards. Simple, right? At least you'd think so. I've been up and down this city for weeks, and only found half a dozen guys even worth looking at. You're good though. You've got history. And gravel in your gut. My boss respects that. Look, the long and short of it is we want you to get a little dirty, and if you're willing to, we'll not only pay you, we'll put you up somewhere where the toilet doesn't flush when you turn the faucet on. That's gotta appeal to you right? So come on, work one job and if you don't like it, you can collect your pay and we won't bother you again."

You look at him for a moment before responding.

A) Tell him you want to see his boss first
B) Shake his hand
