Opening Post:
Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the roll of a young mage, labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. You went back and thoroughly looted an ancient ruin in the last session, and today you face the challenge of finding somewhere to blow your sudden wealth.

Very quickly before we get started, I'd like to take a moment to address a few questions I missed at the end of last thread.
>Give us some of the standard high level techniques for Water.
At Master level, regenerating digits, hands, feet, and basically any particularly large, gruesome wound becomes cost efficient and feasible. You may be able to do that to some extent now, but not nearly to the level a Master can. Condensing water from the air in large quantities also becomes feasible. Basically you'd never need to worry about how much water you have ever again at Master level. You'd also have a damn near perfect counter for any ranged fire spells, condensing water around the spell to douse it in transit. Vatis that reach the rank of Grandmaster with water spells are basically immortal, usually only kicking the bucket after they off themselves or after a colleague is forced to put them down when they go insane.

>So how many Extreme sessions will it take to hit Master for Water?
If you meditated three times and got good rolls each time, you'd hit a plateau. To get past it you'd need to either do independent research (Basically putting some of the things I mentioned above into practice), use Water a whole hell of a lot (the more Vys you spend on element-related spells the closer you'll be able to get to the next level), or find a tome written by someone who was already a Master. After that meditating one more time would be all you need to bump yourself up.
>>
You take a moment to refill your waterskin from the clear pool of water, or what's left of it after you turned a fair portion of it into roiling steam. Water supply replenished, you pull your underrobes back on and then your Centurion Armor. After your armor has sealed itself shut you adjust it briefly before pulling on your Vatis robes. It occurs to you that you'd probably look quite official if you really started to flash that signet ring of yours around. At least, to anyone with little to no knowledge of Pidjata.

Thus girded for the long night of travel ahead, you sit down for a breakfast what little is left of the stew Chryssa was cooking the night before. It's sitting in a sealed pot over a bed of embers, though when you open it you find it's still rather cold after sitting untouched for so long. You decide to flex your new understanding of fire magic to heat up the leftovers before eating, placing your hand over the top of the pot and channeling a small, almost imperceptible amount of Vys into your palm. There's a flash that briefly illuminates the cavern, and then you're left with piping hot stew.

(1/3)
>>
Rather too hot actually, you charred the top layer completely. Still! Scraping that off you sit down to enjoy your stew and... wait. Damn it! The rest of it is lukewarm at best. Ah well, you'll just have to work on your control. You power through it just to get some food in you, then cover it back up and go outside to feed the guar check to make sure nobody absconded with your riches while you meditated. Chryssa comes out of her tent not long after and sits down to spoon out some of the leftovers for herself, glancing curiously at the pile of burned mush that resulted from your little experiment.

She gestures towards it with her spoon absentmindedly. “What's this?”

You shrug. “I had a breakthrough last night while meditating, I tried to heat up the stew before I ate.” A pause. “It didn't really work out.”

She looks at you oddly for a moment. You think, cautiously? Suspiciously? It's always difficult to tell with her. You decide to change the subject. “I have been meaning to ask, what are your plans? Is there anywhere you could go, any family you could stay with?”

(2/3)
>>
She shakes her head. “I have been thinking about that. If I go back to my village, I'll be put to death for killing a guardsmen. Lackey to a corrupt murdering-” She trails off into her own language after that, still as stone faced as ever. You think you might be getting used to that but it's still unsettling. It isn't long before she cuts herself off and switches back to Samjan. “Vile man though he may have been. I was thinking about perhaps guarding caravans, or ships. A good archer is always in demand, and I was the best shot in the entire Dominion of Sosae.”

She pauses to eat for a few moments before continuing. “Or, I could travel with you. You have not been an overly offensive companion despite how grotesquely you seem to twist your face at a moment's notice.” Is she talking about smiling? What a dour culture she comes from. “At the very least I'll travel to Anthus with you, and perhaps depart there by ship or travel to Licae. I heard there was a ruin discovered there that might be worth exploring.”

Rolled 1

You consider for a moment. If she goes to Licae, you'd obviously travel together. It means you might have to split what you find in the dungeon with her, and you'll need to make sure you have enough food to support two people and two guar. On the other hand, you're rich and the guar won't eat that much in the grasslands. As long as you can find some interesting things for Sadik you doubt he'd care if someone else helped you.

“I think you should go to Licae. I'm going there to investigate those same ruins for my patron.” You can decide whether or not to part ways afterward, it's not like it's a time-sensitive issue. The fact she was intending to explore those ruins does concern you though. That means they're well known, and you might have competition.

But first, you should focus on just getting out of the pass. After Chryssa has finished breakfast and packed up her belongings and her tent, you both mount your guar and set off northwards. Taking a rough estimate of the time, you'd say it was probably six hours after high noon, the sun will set soon but you should get out of the pass before midnight.

As you ride north through the canyon, you notice something's off. Black smoke billows from around the next bend, and you see a number of barbed arrows protruding from the ground and the walls of the canyon. It reminds you of that slaughtered caravan you saw previously, on your first trip through the canyon. If you had to guess, you'd say that Aghtaki bandits only recently raided a group of travelers.

Your suspicions are proven correct when you round the bend to see a group of men picking over the corpses of four caravan guards and a trader. You see another group rummaging through his cart, shoving the trader's valuables into canvas bags. One man oversees each group, both of the overseers wearing Vatis robes with scarred over brands upon their cheeks. You can't tell what the brands say from this distance though. You're about to turn your guar around and try to flee around the bend, but one of them spots you and shouts out.

“Boss! There's two more, look like real rich fuckers!”

That gets all their attention, and two of the men draw bows on you while one of the overseers breaks away to approach you and Chryssa. Chryssa, for her part, already has her bow unslung and an arrow nocked on the string. You're armed with your spear and your magic. Still, against two rival Vatis you're not sure how well you'd stand...

The overseer who's approached you stops a few meters away, within easy speaking distance but outside of attack range. “Get off your... fuckin' lizard things, hand over your weapons and valuables, then get out.” He speaks tersely. You doubt he's one for negotiation.

>You have the advantages of better equipment, and being mounted.

>Pull back your helmet flap to reveal the brand on your cheek. Try to claim you're one of them.
>Charge them from guar-back. (Initiate combat, you'll get a bonus to your roll.)

You have what is essentially an instruction manual in your bag, just gotta study it and practice it.

You reach up to your helmet and detach a clasp, pulling it aside to reveal the scarred over brand on your cheek. After you're sure he gets a good look at it you once more snap the clasp closed, hiding the scar. “Listen, Brother. I've probably been at this a lot longer than you have. Why don't you let me pass and we both forget this incident?”

You see his expression soften, though he doesn't move to let you pass or motion for the archers to drop their weapons. Instead he lets out a low whistle. “Well look here, lads. Seem we've found ourselves one of our up-jumped brothers. Found himself some fancy armor and some weird animals, decided he's better than us.”

One of the archers calls out. “Are we gonna put him in his place, Boss? Want me to full him full of arrows?” As he says this, he draws his bow back and levels it at you, you prepare to spur your guar and charge. Before anything can happen the overseer motions the archer down.

“Nah, nah. Probably not worth the trouble. We'd kill 'im and take his pretty little friend here sure, but we'd lose too many of you mooks doing it for it to be worth it.”

One of the bandits in the cart shouts out. “Aww, Boss. I never knew you cared. I'm touched!” Which elicits some laughter from the rest of the peanut gallery.

(1/2)
>>
Finally, the overseer turns his attention back to you. “Now, I'm not about to rob a Brother for everything he's worth. How about you pay...” He looks you over carefully, taking note of your equipment and clothing, before speaking again. “Seven hundred silver and we'll let you both go.”

You stare at him for a moment before confidently stating. “Five hundred, you say you don't want to rob me of all I'm worth, Brother, and yet make such outrageous request of me?” You grin. “I thought I was supposed to be the liar here.”

He laughs, shaking his head. “Oh pah, you can obviously afford it! You're dressed as a king! Fine, fine. Six hundred, but not a penny less!” He seems serious about that too, because his hand moves to casually rest against his sword. A not-so-subtle threat.

You sigh, and reach into your saddlebag to count out the money. It almost physically hurts to part with the wealth you only just obtained, but it's better than getting into a fight you'll never escape from alive or at the very least in good condition. Eventually you collect all six hundred coins into one of the pouches on your belt, detach it, and toss it to him. He picks it up and counts it, before nodding.

“Alright, he's free to go boys. Give our Brother a good send off.” At first you think that may be code for 'Kill this fucker' but instead the bandits group together and start to sing as you ride by. You recognize the song as a bawdy old tune, which basically comes down to calling your mother a prostitute, your father a camel, and you an ugly son of a bitch.

Well, they certainly seem to have a good time at least.

You simply ride by, spurring your guar into a full run for the next few miles before letting it slow down to a more relaxed trot. You're not happy about getting held up by bandits, but at least they didn't take you for all you're worth and then kill you anyway. That's a win in your book.
>New Wealth: 2262 silver pieces. Slightly less disgustingly rich.

You ride in silence for the next few hours. Chryssa eventually breaks the silence as you approach the exit to the canyon. “I think you made the right choice. That would have been a difficult fight and we recovered more than enough silver from that ruin.” You don't respond, though you know she's right.

Not long after that you break out of the mountain pass into the wide open fields of green. The sun has set and the moon has climbed high into the sky, though you think you probably still have about two hours until midnight. Because of how late you camped it won't be difficult to just travel through the night.

The question is, where will you go?
>Licae is a day away, if you set off now you'd reach it by morning.

We should start reading the Range Metamagic manual while we ride.

You decide to head to Anthus. You don't quite feel comfortable hauling around this much silver, so you'd like to blow it on new gear and move on. Then again, maybe you should think about buying a house or some land? Hell, you have enough silver on you that a plantation and staff to farm it wouldn't be out of the question.

Visions of all the things you could buy dance through your head as you start to ride to the northwest. It isn't long before you find the old Rhynian road that Sadik mentioned and follow it, going left whenever you come to cross roads. After a few hours of this you come across a large stone stele with directions and graffiti scrawled across it. You go left, towards Anthus, though if you'd gone right instead you would've been headed towards Licae.

While you ride you chat with Chryssa to pass the time. You ask her what she knows about Anthus and its subsidiaries. It turns out she doesn't know much. She knows that Anthus is one of the wealthier city-states in the region and it's also the largest, but besides going on that diplomatic mission with her father once she's never traveled across the border very far. Supposedly they're much more tolerant than her homeland is. You remain somewhat doubtful about that but hopefully she's right.

Anthus is mainly a trading kingdom, though Licae was supposedly a city build up around silver mines in the lowland hills, and it's famous as an exporter of iron from its outpost in the mountains and cliffs to its south.

By dawn, you're starting to notice that the air is a little colder, and you can smell salt water on the breeze. You're getting close to the Great Sea. Only a few hours later you're traveling along a short cliff that separates the sandy shoreline from the grasslands, and in the distance you can spy a massive city. It seems to have been built upon a spire protruding from the ocean, and a great bridge spans the distance between it and the mainland. It's truly a burgeoning city, large enough even to rival El-Amin.

You arrive just before noon, and the city is crawling with activity. Everywhere you look people are ferrying crates around the docks that surround the city on all sides, carrying goods to and from massive warehouses that seem to be carved from the mountain itself. The streets are filthy and packed with people as you ride by. You're forced to dodge carts and pedestrians both, which seem to refuse to alter their course even the slightest bit to let you pass.

In short, it reminds you of home.

You decide it would be best to find a money changer first. Some merchants might give you gruff for using foreign currency, let alone ancient foreign currency that's been out of mint for centuries. Plus, you don't like carrying around so many bulk coins.

You ride through the city towards the market district, where money lenders and exchangers typically set up shop. It isn't long before you find a place. It even has a spot for you to tie up your guar outside. You leave Chryssa with the bags to guard them while you go inside to negotiate with the money exchanger.

As you enter the shop you find a well furnished lobby with a small desk on the opposite end, where a frail looking, dark-skinned human sits writing something or other. As you enter, he greets you in a language you don't understand. When you don't respond, he looks up from his paper and looks more closely at you. “Ahh! Samja! You speak Rhynian, yes?”

Well thank god, this would've been impossible otherwise. “Yes, I do. I'm here to exchange silver for gold. What rates do you charge?”

(1/2)
>>
>>30462003
we should just work on some negotiation/persuasion like soma suggested earlier. better prices and could keep us out of trouble

He gestures to a board next to him, before realizing the symbols probably mean nothing to you. He'd be right. “Well, for what you're asking I charge twenty percent for everything less than one hundred silver, ten percent for everything between one hundred and one thousand silver, and five percent for anything over that.” Huh, that's actually a pretty good rate. Back in El-Amin the greedy bastards would charge bulk ten percent no matter how much you were exchanging.

How much silver did you want to convert into gold?

You smile. "Well, you can count yourself lucky, friend. I'll be trading somewhere in the neighborhood of 2100 silver." That seems to get the money exchanger's attention, and he pushes himself up out of the chair. "Well, my most honored customer! Allow me to fetch someone to help you."

He rushes into the back, while you walk outside and start detaching your saddlebags and carrying them in one by one. Sheesh, these are heavy... You might want to let Chryssa carry these in while you stand guard. Fortunately, just as you're about to suggest this, a burly young man walks out wheeling some sort of strange half-cart in front of him. You indicate which of the bags the silver is in and then help him load the cart, which he leans back and uses to cart the silver in all in one go.

After you and the merchant count out all of the silver in your possession, you find that you've got 2112 pieces of silver. You also have 10 gold pieces, which you drop into one of your pouches. The merchant will exchange 2100 pieces of silver, take 105 as his 5% fee, and then give you 133 gold pieces in return

By the end of it, you've got 143 gold and 12 silver jangling in your pocket, for a total of 2157 worth of silver.

You set fill your moneypouch with coins, it's almost surreal that all those thousands of coins now fit within a single pouch, and then reattach your saddlebags to your guar. You feel around your armor for somewhere safe you could put your money pouch and find that around your belt there is a small pocket about the size of the purse. You stuff it in there, and it sits comfortably and well hidden. Man, this armor really does have everything.

After that, you and Chryssa remount. You briefly turn to her and say. “If you see something you like just tell me, I do owe you after all for what you've done to help me.” She nods in response, but doesn't say anything. You get the feeling she's a little scared being around so many people in such a small space.

No, only 30. it takes 35 to go from Master to Grandmaster. but we'd get very large modifiers from trying it multiple times, intense training methods, Tomes, and probably a few other things.
>>
>>30462790
no its 35, last time for novice it was 15.
>>
>>30462790
to get to grand master we have to do something special, so the DC is probably 35 for master.
>>30459097
>If you meditated three times and got good rolls each time, you'd hit a plateau. To get past it you'd need to either do independent research (Basically putting some of the things I mentioned above into practice), use Water a whole hell of a lot (the more Vys you spend on element-related spells the closer you'll be able to get to the next level), or find a tome written by someone who was already a Master. After that meditating one more time would be all you need to bump yourself up.

After that it's off to the markets. You know you're already near-by, by nature of being near the moneylenders, but you can't be entirely sure where they are exactly. You set off in the general direction of where you think the ports are and before long emerge into a large, wide open plaza. It seems this is the main thoroughfare of goods into and out of the city, judging by the cranes that line the docks to unload incoming ships and the, quite frankly, massive statues sitting atop the short wave breaker that surrounds the port in the distance.

Merchants stalls fill the plaza, small shops surround it on all sides, and people even wander around hawking goods from rolling carts. There are people playing music at every corner for tips and others selling what you think might be kebab. You're assaulted by strange smells and stranger sights and sounds.

What do you look for first?

Keep in mind that methods of meditation you know now can give you up to a +6 modifier, and more extreme methods will give you larger modifiers up to a maximum of +10.

>>30462849
This Anon is partially correct. You need to both pass a meditation roll at a difficulty of 35, and you need to do something special. Find some artifact, make some sort of major breakthrough in your research, or find some lost tome written by a grandmaster before he went insane.
>>
They way I figure it works is like this:

>we're at Novice and meditate
>we need to roll over 15 for an insight
>we're now at apprentice
>repeat 2 more times for Vatis and Expert
>find a master's tome or use a lot of water spells
>roll over 30 (since we're at expert), if we succeed we're a Master
>to get to Grandmaster we probably need some artifacts or find a grandmaster or something and beat a DC of 35

You decide to see about finding a new weapon. You like your spear, it's served you well since you were tossed out into the desert, but it's far from the best weapon you could afford. You start to ride through the marketplace slowly, taking in the sights and sounds. People shout at you as you pass, claiming to have the number one best whatever it is they're selling. You mostly ignore them. Chryssa pulls her guar closer to yours though, eyeing everyone and everything you pass suspiciously.

You wave to get her attention. “Relax, Chryssa. You look like you're about to panic.” You try to say that soothingly, though she snaps at you in response.

“How can you be sure?! There's a thousand people here, any one of them could want to stick a knife in your side!” Well damn, this is the most you've ever seen her react to... anything. You'd think she would've remembered it being like this from when she visited as a little girl. Guess she grew a little claustrophobic over the years. Plus, you note that she seems to be getting quite a bit more attention than you are. You'd guess it's the massive horns protruding from her forehead.

“Just relax, we'll be out of the market before you know it. Why don't you help me look for a blacksmith selling spears to distract yourself? It'll make things go quicker.” She glares at you, but seems to take your advice.

You think for a moment and then nod to the old elf. “Let me see what you have in stock first, then we might discuss custom work.” It seems the most reasonable course of action. After all, you want to make sure what he has is good quality before you commission anything from him.

He nods and then leads you into his shop. The walls are lined with old, chipped blades and cracked spears. Each one with a small plaque below it detailing what broke or damaged it. Apparently this old man has a pretty crazy collection. Spears broken off inside Palaka worms, blades chipped in duels against some of the greatest fighters of the modern age, people you've heard of even all the way in Pidjata. Eventually he leads you to the back where he seems to display his newer weapons.

They come in all variety of shapes and sizes, some seem to be half spear and half axe, others have wide wings spanning out from the spear tip, presumably to catch blades. Some are long, others short. Basically any variety you could ask for, and he's got swords and armor too.

“So how long would it take, roughly, to get a custom spear made?” You ask, while inspecting his wares.

(1/2)
>>
He shrugs. “Ooh, depends. If you want a wooden haft it'd be two days or so. Metal haft probably three. I usually charge about five gold for a simple job. I'm also familiar enough with ol' Rhynian tech I could probably incorporate some simple things. Make it adjustable length, make it amplify spell effects, that sort. Gets expensive though.” That seems reasonable, usually blacksmiths back home charged about 60 silver, so a little cheaper than you'd think is usual actually.

and
>Amplify Spell Effects
is a pretty clear favorite.

You could get the following combinations as examples.

1
>+4 Damage Avoidance with Amplify Spell Effects
This would be a ranseur-esque spear with wide protrusions around the tip to catch enemy blades/spears. This bonus would be cumulative with your armor.

>+4 to Damage, AmpSpell Effects
This would likely be a spear with a barbed tip, which would cause truly hideous wounds when it was pulled out.

+4 to Maneuverability, AmpSpell Effects
Basically, this would be a spear that's on the shorter end of things, probably lighter too, with a small spearhead. It'd be more maneuverable in tight quarters. It'd make using a spear more practical in more situations. (I'm using maneuverability to replace initiative, since initiative is often something decided without rolls.)

>Amplify Spell Effects, Retractable
This would be a spear not unlike your current spear, except with a metal haft that it can recede into. Useful for hiding weapons and surprise attacks, as the spear would expand with enough force to puncture many types of armor.

You particularly liked that ranseur you saw, though it had a wooden haft, and you were hoping for a metal haft. Sturdier that way, doesn't have to be as bulky. Plus, you'd like something with a bit more similar a shape to your own spear, and preferably something that would amplify spells you channeled into the weapon.

“I think I'd like to make a custom order. I'd like something similar to that... what was it you called it, a ranseur?” He nods. Apparently it's some sort of Aleamondian weapon. “Something like that with a metal haft, and I'd like it to amplify spell effects. Not as long either, closer to what my spear is now.” You say, while gently tapping your spear against the stone floor.

The old blacksmith rubs his chin. “I can do that, certainly. It'll take about four days I imagine. Three to craft the haft and the spear tip. One to carve the necessary incantations and ritual circles into the haft. This is labor intensive work, you understand. It'll probably run you somewhere in the neighborhood of...” He waves a hand in the air, as if trying to pluck a number from thin air. “Thirty gold. Four hundred fifty silver. There-abouts.”

You decide now is a good time to bring up the silver ore. “I also have a hundred pounds of silver ore, that I would be willing to exchange as barter.”

>>

Maybe you should start listing those things. The lethality of our weapons doesn't matter too much because paralysis can make up the difference. Nothing about it being easy to hide excludes the weapon from being a competent, reliable weapon.

>>30464909
second, thread.
>>
Oh, forgot to mention
>Roll 3d10 for haggling!

>>30464902
Compact sword is actually great at what it does. It's really hard to find and incredibly well made. It won't do any more damage than a normal blade, nor will it provide any bonuses to attack rolls until you learn to use it (It's pretty easy to pick up martial weapons, just by the by), but it's also not at any risk of warping or breaking like a normal blade it's size and thickness might be.

But no, it's not a main combat weapon. That's why you have your spear. It's essentially a hold out pistol.
>>
>>30464919

You rub your chin contemplatively. “You know, I'm not one of those noblemen who sit in their castles and treat weapons like trophies. Why, as soon as I'm done in town I go to raid an old Rhynian ruin in the middle of the wilderness. If your workmanship proves as good as I think it will be I could be a frequent customer...” You trail off, not directly stating that you're asking for a discount. Elves don't usually appreciate bluntness.

He nods in understanding. “Well, for a returning customer I may be willing to offer a discount. How's fifteen gold sound? You pay five up front with the silver, and ten when I hand you the weapon.”

You clap your hands together approvingly. “That sounds perfect, friend! I can't wait to see the work of art you craft.” You dig into your armor and pull out your coin purse, handing over five gold coins. He pockets them.

You turn and leave the shop, after getting a receipt and leaving your name. You'll need to return in four days. Chryssa is waiting by the guar when you return, she looks to have calmed down quite a bit now that she's not in the thick of the crowd anymore.

You decide to look around for some place you might find magic tomes, or scrolls containing the secret to unlocking some effect or another. You're not exactly sure what a magic shop might look like, but you figure it'll be obvious some how. Fire shooting out of the chimney, or something.

After a almost a half hour of searching, you've found nothing. Nothing at all. Eventually, you stop and ask a passer-by where you might find tomes regarding spells and vys. It takes a bit of explaining to get through the cultural confusion but eventually you get pointed in the right direction. Towards the “Academy” whatever the heck that means. He explained it as the place where they train Vatis, but you doubt training more than one apprentice in the same location would be a very good idea...

You end up going uphill, towards the keep at the top of the mountain. Man, you're gonna have to walk all the way back down to the marketplace after this... well, ride. You suppose you're not walking. Eventually, you reach a gate where a guard ask you what you need fro m the Upper Quarter. You tell him you're a visitor and wish to see this 'Academy' place. He hands you a pass, and tells you to show it to any guards that ask, and gives one to Chryssa as well. What's so special about this part of town?

You ride through the gates once they open, and immediately you see a vast building atop a near-by cliff. It must take up acres, and it's clearly built in the Rhynian style. Probably restored after the collapse. As you ride through the streets you find that you end up heading towards that great domed building, and just as you arrive outside a stylized gate, a pair of guards lower their halberds in front of the door.

“The Academy of Anthus is off-limits to non-students without a pass.” They ask you in Rhynian. You show them your pass as the guard at the first gate instructed, but they still don't raise their weapons from your path. “For what purpose do you seek to visit the academy?”

You bow. Well, as much as you can atop a guar. “I am a visitor, and a... what is it your people call us? Magos? Trained in Pidjata. I wish to peruse your library and perhaps purchase some books to read on my journeys.” You figure it's best to just be polite and honest. If they don't pick up that you're rich and (assumed to be) powerful from the way you're dressed then they probably wouldn't figure that out regardless.

That seems to get their attention, in fact they're stepping and fetching now. The guards quickly push the gates open and step aside for you. “The Academy always accepts visits from foreign experts. Go to the central building on campus and ask for Archmagos Megalos to be lead to the library.”

Well, that seems straightforward enough! You spur Al Gasreed forward and enter the grounds, the gates closing behind you and Chryssa. As you ride through the grounds you see young men and women meditating, dueling one another, listening to the instructions of someone you can only assume is a full fledged Vatis, and practicing spells and effects against targets. It's amazing that this many apprentices in one location haven't collectively screwed up enough to burn down the entire city.

(1/2)
>>
Maybe we should have gotten this spar AND the retractable spear? it's nice to have a back up.
>>
Eventually you reach the double doors, great oaken constructions carved with a depiction of some wise old man, you assume he's some sort of god by the way he's stylized, and dismount your guar. You tie it to a near-by post next to a few others, they seem to be provided with food and water there, which is great in your book. Don't have to feed them for a day. Chryssa follows suit and the two of you approach the giant carved doors.

She pushes them open, and inside you're greeted by a veritable throne room. The floors are made of white marble, and columns made of the same material support the vaulted ceiling. Guards stand on either side of the entrance, and snap off quick salutes as you enter. At the very far end of the room you can make out a huge desk which seems to be staffed by four or five assistants, presumably to guide people like you.

You walk across the vast hall to the desk, taking a moment to gawk at the statues and carvings on the pillars as you walk past. Truly, you can't imagine the number of artisans who must have worked to build this place. It boggles the mind. Chryssa tries to keep her composure, and certainly does a better job of it than you, but you see her pausing to stare at a particularly pillar or statue every now and again too. Eventually, you both reach the front desk and the smiling Elven (You think, her ears are awfully short but they look sorta pointed) woman greets you in some language you fail to grasp.

She tries a few others before switching to Rhynian. “Please tell me you at least speak Rhynian?” You nod in response. “Yes, quite well if I do say so myself. We're here to see Archmagos Megalos. We'd like to see the library. “ The elven woman perks up and nods. “You'll just

We'd like to see the library. “ The elven woman perks up and nods. “You'll just need to follow this staircase behind me up to his chambers. Knock three times on the door then walk inside, he should be waiting for you.”

You question for a moment how he'd know to expect you, but figure that he's probably a nature mage. They can often expand their senses through near-by plant life and this campus certainly doesn't lack for plant life. Chryssa glances around herself, seems that sat less well with her than it did with you.

Regardless, you make your way up the stairs. Every few steps you note a potted plant, further confirming your suspicions that it's probably a nature mage at the top. Eventually you reach a simple oaken door and raise your fist to knock three times, before pushing it open.

The Archmagos' Chambers are simply covered from floor to ceiling and greenery. You can hear someone writing from the floor above but don't see anybody. A masculine voice calls out to you “Come in! Make yourself comfortable, I'll just be a minute.” As he says this, two chairs weave themselves out of vines near-by. In front of a small table also woven of vines. You sit down without complaint, while Chryssa decides to stay obstinately standing next to you.

It isn't long before the man himself comes traipsing down the stairs. He's... actually one of your kind, a Samjan. You note a scar similar to your own upon his left cheek, although his says “Scourge” instead of “Slanderer”. That means he's either a rapist or cavorted about with a woman from another race. You'd lean towards the latter if he's managed to become the leader of this little enclave.

He greets you with a smile, and speaks in samjan. “What can I do for you? Rare we get Samja in this part of the world, that aren't traders that is.” After a brief pause he continues. “Pardon the scar, it's baseless I assure you.”

You smile to the man before standing and unclasping your cheek guard, pulling it back to reveal your own scar. “No need to explain, Brother. Injustice is common amongst our kind it seems.” The two of you bow to one another while the right hand touches the forehead and the left hand touches the heart, as is the traditional greeting between family members. It's somewhat surreal, even the bandits robbing you seemed to feel some sort of kinship.

“So it is, Brother, so it is!” He says, while another chair weaves itself out of vines next to him. You both take your seats and, finally, Chryssa joins you. The Archmagos seems to notice her for the fist time. “Who's this? She looks like one of Surya's Children.” He states matter of factly.

She glances at you before speaking up. “I'm Chryssa Avci, a hunter. We met on the road and I helped him out of difficulties. He is seeking to repay his debt while we travel together.” Well, that's not really how you would've put it, but you suppose that's not really false either. Seems like a not-so-subtle hint. Of what you're not sure, considering she hasn't said a word to you about spying something she wants.

Well, that aside. The Archmagos smiles and bows his head to her politely. “It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Matron Avci.” She nods her head, before the Archmagos turns his attention to you once more.

You shake your head. “No no, I'm grateful but I don't think I'm at a level yet that I should be teaching. I'd like to get a better grasp of water and fire magic at the very least before I'd consider it.”

He nods. “I understand, of course. Well, if that's all it's the least I could do for a fellow Aghtaki.” He stands, you and Chryssa follow suit. The chairs and table recede into the floor. “Follow me, I'll lead you to the library. It's on the ground floor.”

Rather than lead you to the door you walked in through, he takes you to a book shelf. Horribly cliché place to hide a secret passageway, but you suppose there is some merit in cliché. You're lead through a narrow stone pathway to another set of steps, which you descend to the ground floor. You end up exiting from behind another book case, which he quietly slide back into place behind him.

Surrounding you are books and scrolls, written in every language, on every subject imaginable. Even some you imagined too boring for someone to waste time writing books about. It seems that you're in some sort of sealed off portion of the library, not available for public use, because you three are the only ones here.

“This is where we keep our collection of magic tomes, both on elements and effects. Metamagic scrolls can be found against the opposite wall. Is there anything in particular you're looking for? I might help you find it.”

You contemplate for a moment. “Well, Archmagos-” He interrupts you gently. “Please, call me Suresh. I took a local name after I started teaching here but truth be known, I detest it.” You smile and clap him companionably on the shoulder. “Of course. You as well may call me Mikhael. Well, Suresh. I was hoping to expand my retinue of effects, and maybe find a good treatise on Master level water magic.”

He nods his head, and starts to lead you through the shelves upon shelves of books. You notice Chryssa break away when she apparently sees a section in her language, she gestures for you to keep going. Eventually, Suresh stops in front of one shelf in particular and pulls out two books, fairly close to each other. One of them is thick, almost as large as your head. A proper book you could club a man to death with. The other, by comparison, is a pamflet.

“These are the Five Effects Every Vatis Should Know and A Treatise on Advanced Water Magic by Master Yusef. Very reputable fellow, I used to write to him regularly. You couldn't ask for better.” You bow, and thank him, but he waves it off. “Do not mention it, friend. When you've finished looking you can talk to the woman at the front desk about price and rental and the like. Tell her that the Archmagos has given you a twenty-five percent discount, and these two are on me.”

Well damn, that's really very generous! You're going to owe Suresh after this, even if he won't admit it. Still, considering books like these usually cost hundreds of silver. Sometimes thousands for particularly rare copies, you don't doubt it will come in handy.

You peruse the shelves for a little while longer, picking out anything that catches your eye. It'd be impossible to go over everything in detail, so instead you just grab whatever you glance over that looks interesting. It isn't long before you've got a stack of seven books, counting the Five Effects and Advanced Water Magic. You find an isolated table and start to look through them in more detail.

You picked out two books from the Beginner's Guide to the Elements. Earth and Metal. They're considered complementary elements, much like Water and Nature. Fire is the only element with no compliment. Complementary Elements are often more powerful when used together instead of apart.
(1/2)
>>
You also picked out a Metamagic Scroll. It's titled “Leaping” and from what you can tell it causes a spell to jump from one target to the next after it strikes. It mainly uses examples with fire magic, going on a long rant about how a leaping fireball can wipe out entire legions when cast properly. Frankly, it sounds a little bit like a power fantasy, but still it could be useful.

Next is another Metamagic Scroll, this one titled “Blast”. It's perhaps the most basic scroll besides Ranged or Weapon affinity. It starts off explaining the differences between Ranged, Blast, and Beam. Apparently, ranged spells are more like little javelins, or balls, that strike the target only when properly targeted and take time to cross the distance. Beams instantaneously reach the target, and can be maintained to do more damage, but apparently drain Vys rather quickly. Blast is a short-range burst of magic that, when combined with fire, incinerates an area 20 feet in front of you in a cone.

Finally, the last book you found has no title. The inside cover just says “Grandmaster Rostam”. It seems to be random, incomprehensible ramblings throughout the first few pages, a personal journal, probably.

Pick which ones you want to take, keep in mind each of these will cost at least 20 gold, probably more.

You decide that you're interested in all the books, but would like to get them priced first. You carefully stack all of your findings along with the two books gifted to you by the Archmagos, then start making your way towards the front desk. The woman there sees you coming and clears a space on the desk for you to set your books down. Before she can start taking them off the pile you quickly explain.

“These two are a gift from the Archmagos, and he told me to tell you I get a twenty-five percent discount off the total.” She raises an eyebrow, but doesn't say anything. Instead she quickly scans through the five other books you picked out and sets them out.

“The Beginner's Guides are three hundred silver, each. The Burst scroll is four hundred fifty. The Leaping scroll is six hundred seventy five. The Grandmaster's Journal is one thousand two hundred.”

We are at an impasse. We're also on page 10 and fading fast.

Would anyone be opposed to calling the thread here, and picking it up on Wednesday with a new vote? I'm worried this might not be fair for some of the people here, but the alternative is to roll for it and I'd rather not leave this up to the dice.

I'm fine with that
We could also discuss it more
Like going over how stupid it is to leave the journal of a grandmaster behind when it's almost definitely the only copy
and written by a grandmaster
why do people want to leave this
it could take us all the way to grandmaster
jesus some people are dense
