Seattle, 2073. Handbasket still in motion.

You are Echo_TRACER, a nova-hot hacker with a dangerous mind and one the fastest ‘links in the Seattle Metro. Life is hard in the 2070’s, and even an elite like yourself has to pay the rent. Hopefully, your latest job will make up for the current deficiency in your cred account. Last time, you suited up and infiltrated Bellevue, the most exclusive town in the Metroplex. You confirmed your new job with your Johnson, and decided that you had a chance to get it done right away. You’ve tracked your target to a warehouse district in Bellevue, and you’re preparing to engage the transport party.

Your car is stopped just outside of the warehouse block. It would take nothing more than a thought to open the gate. You don’t want to screw this up. Even if you weren’t in corporate territory, relying on DocWagon to haul your ass away if things got hot is leaving too much to chance for your liking. If you were going in, you’d need to do this right.

You remove your contact lenses and replace them with a pair of bulky goggles. They have the same image link and smartlink overlay as your contacts, but also include low-light and flare compensation upgrades. Next, you slide on a rebreather mask. Your unremarkable looks already make it difficult for people to remember you. Covering your face gives the opposition one less detail if they come looking for you. You switch off your civilian commlink and shove it into the glove box.

(Basic rules: There will be a ten-minute voting period between posts, with the time starting after the first vote. Rolls will be requested on occasion, with the first three rolls counted and the highest used. Nat 20’s are Critical Hits, whereas nat 1’s are Critical Glitches. These results override all others, and Hits take priority over Glitches. Write-ins during votes are encouraged, and details therein will be included to the best of my ability.)

Your gun’s loaded, you’ve got a spare mag in one pocket and the collapsed baton in the other. Your datajack’s synced to your work ‘link and you’re slipping on the shock gloves. Right now, your greatest advantage is the element of surprise. Well, time for those slots to be surprised.

(Though each of the options have their own DC listed next to them, you will not be asked to roll until the vote has been settled. Also, to increase elegance of the rolling system, Echo_TRACER’s skills are now represented in the DCs instead of in roll bonuses.)

Using the cameras, it’s easy to target a few of the block’s warehouse drones. Thankfully slaved to a single master node that directs their actions, hacking this one node will give you control of at least four industrial robots. You fire up your standard hacking array and follow the connection between the closest robot and its master.

The node gets a (pretty high DC) chance to detect you. Keep in mind that, due to the effects of both Babylon and DeadMask having the Mute options, even if you're detected, an alarm will not trigger for a little while.

Babylon cuts through the master node’s firewall in seconds. From your seat in the car, you can see the locations and direct activities for all the drones connected to it. You miscounted. There are six drones connected to the node. This was going to be fun.

One of the uniformed men jumps down from inside the van just in time for a speeding forklift to narrowly avoid running him down. A second joins it and easily drives the men away from the van. From the camera feed, you can see a pair of assault rifles still inside. Looks like they’re either unarmed or relying of sidearms.

The two men up front scramble out of the van, rifles in hand, and unload into the one of the forklifts. It’s quickly getting damaged, but assault rifle ammo doesn’t last forever.

“Hacker!” the driver shouts, signaling to his passenger. “Tango, go under! Smoke him!” The passenger fires a short burst at the drone before jumping back into the van. It looks like they had a hacker on their side, too.

For dealing with the hacker:
>Set a databomb in the node and let it do the work. (Tango rolls DC 15 check with significant consequences for failure)
>Raise your privileges and load up the IC (DC 13. Success raises the DC for Tango by another 3, but has less severe consequences for his failure.)

For dealing with the four remaining men:
>Have the forklifts herd them together, so you can take them out all at once.
>Have the forklifts separate them, and take them out one-by-one)

You use the cameras to tag the operatives as targets for the drones to move into different warehouses. Letting them stick together and apply group tactics would be the deal-breaker here. On their own, you could deal with them personally. For the time being, though, you’d need to deal with Tango. You didn’t have time to deal with him personally, but you could make his job a lot harder. If the node were on alert with the IC patrolling, his hacking in would become a non-issue. But you’d need to get yourself higher privileges to avoid locking yourself out. Oh well, no one said this would be easy.

The security seems much faster than before now that you’re under pressure. Even so, you’ve been in tighter situations before and you’re still alive. You didn’t survive as a Runner by being chicken-shit. You screw up your concentration and force yourself to work faster. Your own brain gets dangerously close to outpacing how quickly Babylon could perform.

You’re now officially Matrix security for the warehouse block, at least for now. “Tango” will have a hell of a time getting in now.

You turn your attention to the operatives being chased around by the drones. You don’t necessarily want to kill them, but they have to be dealt with, and running them around with the forklifts is only tiring them out. You give your equipment one last check before stepping out of the car. Using the camera feeds as your eyes inside, you scale the fence and land in the shadow of one of the warehouse, out of sight of the operatives. You check their locations and plan your next move.

>Take out the armed one. He may have a gun, but he’s on his own and you can probably sneak up on him.

Tango’s tied down trying to keep his friends from getting geeked, and two of the field men left their guns in the van. The last one’s armed and desperate, and that isn’t a combo you liked. Magic is always an unknown factor on the battlefield, and one of the two others could easily be a mage. But “maybe” didn’t cut in the shadows. You had to deal with what you could know.

You creep along the warehouse walls until you find the armed man. He’s crouched behind a stack of crates with an empty magazine by his feet. While the drone looks for him, he’s reloading his gun.

>Shoot him. You’re close enough that you won’t miss and a double-tap of Stick & Shock will leave him sputtering on the ground. (DC 10)

You don’t need to shoot this guy. He’s only one man and you want your gun as a last resort. He’s looking at his own gun, still in the middle of reloading, as you slowly creep up behind him. One hand clamps over his mouth, and the opposite arm around his neck. He doesn’t even have time to gasp before the current goes through him. As he drops his gun and spasms wildly in your arms, you silently thank the nonconductive weave in your jacket.

You release him, and he crumples to the ground, still shaking and twitching. He’s stunned, but still conscious. At least, he was still conscious before you introduced the butt of your baton the back of his head. One strike, right where skull meets spine, and he’s out. He’ll have a bad headache once he wakes up, but at least he’s not dead.

You have the drone un-tag the man and creep back behind the warehouse, his assault rifle in hand. You’ve never used one of these things before, and it’s definitely loaded with real ammo, so it’s safer to just dump it.

One down, two or three to go.

>One of them is taking cover inside of one of the warehouses. If he finds something he can use as a weapon, he’ll be trouble.

You have to creep through open terrain to get line-of-sight on the van, and you make it close just in time to be informed that Tango’s finally hacked his way into the master node. You can see the unarmed operative dashing towards the van, aiming for the gun in back. One way or another, you’re going to have to choose a target here.

You’re between a rock and a hard place. If you gun for the guard, Tango would restrict your access and send the forklifts after you. You go for Tango, the guard would get at his gun and you’d be dead. You don’t even know where the last guy is. In situations like this, the Gordian knot would be the best way of going about things.

It was time to hack the van.

You erase your actions from the log of the warehouse node and drop out. You have more important things to do. The van’s onboard computer was about to become this team’s worst nightmare. It only takes Babylon three seconds to cut through the van’s firewall and give you total access. The guard is only a dozen feet away when the van’s back door closes and it accelerates away. You maneuver the van around and steer it towards your hiding spot. You digitally open the door and jump into the moving vehicle, driving an electrified fist into Tango’s gut on the way in.

With Tango down, there’s nothing stopping you from taking back the warehouse’s node. You open the gate just in time for the van to speed through, taking care to lock it behind you. Once you’re clear, you bring the car to you and open the van’s back door again. You take care to line up the door to the car’s trunk and wheel the case inside. This thing was a lot bigger up-close than it looked through the cameras. Seriously, it was barely big enough to fit into your trunk.

“What the fuck is in here, bricks?” You gasp, giving the case one last shove. Once it’s secure, you shut the trunk and give Tango one last look. You take the commlink from his pocket, remove the response chip and smash the rest with the baton. Squeezing the tiny chip in your electrified fist is enough to fry it.

“Well, that was easy.” You say to yourself, getting back into the car. You needed to get to someplace safe and call Rockwell to tell her you secured the drive. The safest place you can think of is…

>Redmond. Bellevue shares a border with the barrens, and if there’s a safehouse this close, there’s bound to be a hidden way in.

The smuggler’s route of Bellevue is pretty easy to find from the warehouse block. It leads straight into Redmond, right near Touristville, but there’s no way you’re staying there. A ritzy car like a BMW would stick out in the barrens like the scrawny new kid in a prison shower. In the transition, you shift the access ID, license plate and coloration to something unrecognizable. You needed to vanish, and now.

Part of vanishing was shutting off your civilian commlink. You’d need a replacement for the next little while, and you knew a nice little corner store would you could find a burner ‘link. Jabir’s dossier on Rockwell included a commcode. There was no way you were calling her on any ‘link you cared about, but a disposable one was practically made for illicit conversations. You slave the burner to your work ‘link dial up her commcode and listen to it ring.

“Hello?” Rockwell says.

“Hello, Ms. Johnson.” You say.

“Mr. Tracer?” Rockwell asks in a hushed voice. “How did you get this number?”

“I have the package you requested. When I can expect you to pick it up?”

“Hmm.” Rockwell huffs. “Not today. And not anywhere in Bellevue. There’s a place in Redmond, Pinewood Heights. Meet me there at ten tomorrow night. I’ll pick it up then.” Rockwell pauses. “I’m impressed. You certainly work quickly.”

“I don’t like to keep my clients waiting, Ms. Johnson. Fast and efficient service is one of my policies. I suppose I’ll be seeing you tomorrow night. Good bye, Ms. Johnson.” You close the call and shut off the burner. The last thing you need right now is for that call to be traced. Now that your next meeting is set up, you’ll need to hide somewhere.

>Find yourself a second-rate hotel and have a little privacy.

Jabir’s got a payday coming his way. You need to stash the car, you need to keep the case off the streets, and you need to stay out of sight. You needed a safehouse. You sigh. Jabir will probably be upset about you just hanging up on him last time, but you’ve only got to stash yourself for about twenty-nine hours and you’ve still got a fat expense account. You find Jabir’s commcode and give him a ring.

“What is it?” He sounds extremely cross.

“Sorry about last time, Jabir. I was under a lot of pressure back there. I’d like to make it up to you, if you’ll hear me out.”

“Make it up how, exactly?” It still amazes you how quickly Jabir will go from near-homicidal to your best friend at the first mention of money.

“The Johnson for the last job got me a two-grand expense account and I’m willing to pay you more than you’ll deserve for getting me a safehouse for the next day and a half.”

“Hold on just a moment.” Jabir mutes his call and you spend the time drumming your fingers on the dashboard. “There you go, all set.” Immediately, a waypoint appears on your map. It looks like it’s right in the middle of the Downtown core, probably on top of a restaurant.

“You’re too good to me, Jabir. I’ll wire your pay over once I’ve stashed my car.”

“A pleasure as always, Echo.” Jabir terminates the call and you switch the car over to manual.

It takes you about half an hour to reach apartment building. From the outside, the place looked like it was around in the forties. While it was thankfully devoid of AR spam, it also lacked a lot of the helpful AROs that you’ve grown accustomed to. On the bright side, the building’s only a block away from a self-storage place where you can stash your car. The drive’s box might feel like an attaché case full of bricks, but at least it had wheels.

There’s no one inside of the building’s lobby, and no one at the desk. The badly-abused linoleum tiles are cracked and yellowed, and the elevator is an old button-operated cage. As far as safehouses went, this is less than ideal, but at least you’re unlikely to be bothered here.

The key to the apartment Jabir got you is waiting under the welcome mat. The one-bedroom apartment has a wireless-blocking paint, a single fiber optic cable for a Matrix connection and a shitty trid link. Both the bed and couch look like they were stolen off the roadside, and the fridge had more beer than food.

“It won’t be comfortable, but it’ll have to do.” You mutter to yourself, slowly lugging the case behind you. “Shit, this thing is heavy. No way it’s just a drive in there.”

With that out of the way, you shrug off your jacket, root through the cabinets for a few candy bars and collapse on the couch with a beer. This was going to be a very boring twenty-eight hours. Any Runner worth his salt has at least a few ways to kill time. For you, the method of choice is…

>calling a friend (Choose between Summer and your neighbor Logan)

On that train of thought >>30444838 we could see what Neurophage has been up to. I mean we have a whole day to kill.

Check out JackPoint, see if there's anything interesting going on in the shadows. Maybe see what Neurophage has been up to.

You spoof your work ‘link’s access ID, plug it into your head, and connect it to the apartment’s wired connection. When you have a few hours to kill and can’t afford to go outside, there’s one friend who you also know how to find.

It takes you a moment to connect to Fortune, one of Chaos Engine’s prime nodes for recreation. As usual for the middle of summer, the node’s full of a bunch of newbie wannabes getting flamed down by the old guard, and plenty of conversation and argument conducted in the most profane, offensive or lewd manner as humanly possible. It takes next to no time to find a name you recognize.

“Phage,” you mentally type, “are you seriously contributing to Magical Girl Street Samurai Quest?”

“Eat a dick, Echo. Ur the one who followed Vampire Dragon Hunter Quest for what, 150 threads.”

“Maybe that was because VDHQ didn’t get bogged down by magical realm bullshit and waifu faggotry six threads in.”

“6/10 almost believed you.”

Well, if nothing else, it looks like Neurophage is alive and well. Arguing with him over the Matrix reminds you of your college days, back when you were still a normal person. Once the initial pleasantries are done, you question Phage on the goings-on the shadows of the Matrix. From what he’s heard, there are still the same battles between the Yakuza and Mafia for control over the Downtown area, Grid Overwatch Division is still trying to put a stop to Chaos Engine’s cybercrime, and of course there’s the news of the hack on Ares Pacific Northwest. You decide to keep it quiet that you were the one behind that.

By the time you’re done with Neurophage, you put in a call to Summer. It’s only been a few hours, but so long as you’re stuck here, you might as well let her know that you’re alive. She answers the call on the first ring. From the sounds in the background, it seems like you caught her at work.

“Hey, Summer.” You say once the line connects.

“Trace? You never call during work. What’s up?”

“Just wanted to talk to you. I’ve had kind of a busy morning. I’m, ah, I’m stuck in a meeting and I’m not gonna be out for a while.”

“Well I’ve got good news. You’ll never guess what I just heard from the boss. Get this: I managed to get a few days off next week. Isn’t that great?”

“That’s awesome. Cleanup from work is gonna take a few days, but after that I’ll be free. Look, I gotta get back to work, and I’m sure you’re finishing up at work, too. I’ll call you tomorrow, okay?”

“Alright. I’ll be waiting. See you, Trace.” Summer hangs up, and you return to your place on the couch. Your few hours trolling around on Fortune filled a good chunk of time. By now, your rumbling stomach reminds you that you skipped lunch. You still had a hefty expense account and the world at your fingers.

You feel damn lucky that guy running the burger shop down the street is related to a farmer in Snohomish. It might have been a little pricey, but real beef and real potatoes were not something that one took for granted. The sun’s already down by the time you get back to the safehouse, and your stomach is contentedly full. If nothing else, this will make it easy to fall asleep.

You fumble for the key and open the door just in time for someone to shove their way past you. You fall on your ass on the badly-worn carpet and trigger the arm slide holding your pistol. You fire a few shots down the hall, but the person’s already gone. It doesn’t matter. The safehouse has been compromised and you needed to move. You rush into the apartment. The drive case is lying in the middle of the room, the cover ajar and slowly opening. You slowly approach as the case opens completely. Inside, slowly moving is…

“Wait…” you say. “What the fuck?”

Inside is a human.

As a side-note, sorry if this one was a little thread. I'm still getting the hang of this whole quest-running thing and this the third thread I've done in five days. With a week to prepare instead of a day and a half, I'll have a lot more content ready for the next thread.

>>30446455
Can we get a basic description on the person who shoved past us?.

Also, for those who know the Shadowrun setting better, is there anything close to a Code of Honor about runners taking jobs against runners, or is it understood that kind of shit is bad for business and reputation?
>>
>>30446494
maybe not. Maybe we can accumulate a crew
>>
>>30446647
The person was certainly shorter than you. They were wearing an armor jacket and boots. You're pretty sure that they were armed. Generally, runners running against each other is okay so long as you're not running against your own team. Business is business and so long as no one holds a grudge or kills someone's dog, it's just something that happens.

Also, >>30446633
>this the third thread...

Note to self, just because you had a screwdriver with dinner doesn't mean you can start a second while you're trying to quest. It's just gonna result in more typos.
