>Welcome to Magi Quest!
>We still need a name for our protagonist.
>Archives can be found Here > http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Magi%20Quest <

The stone is cold beneath you, and your left arm is laying across something hard and slender. After yesterday's ordeal and your nighttime exploration of the Tower by the Sea, which you have learned once belonged to the great Magi Sindarius, you can safely assume that you have slept well past midday. You sit up, finding the source of hardness to be the staff your uncle intrusted you with, and gaze at your surroundings. The cold gray stone of the wall melds easily into the hard white marble floors, while adorning the walls are many hung tapestries and torches that shine without a flame, casting an ethereal orange glow about the circular room.

As you begin to rise from your place of slumber, all of last nights worries come rushing back to you. Oh gods, where is Uncle? What happened to the others in the village? Did Mason and his son escape? What about the cute neighbor girl, Michelle? The Innkeeper and his wife? The old Hag that handled all of Uncle's medicine? Why was the Animist attacking your village, and will he try to track down the survivors?
>>
Your head begins to spin, dizzy from sleep and worry. Okay, you need a plan. There is an alcove behind you leading back down to the Atrium beneath the tower, where Nesus and his Throne Room are located, as well as another unexplored passage. Directly across from you is another alcove with more marble stairs spiraling upwards into the upper floors of the tower. The wall to your left is devoid of any physical oddities, simply adorned with a large Orange and Red tapestry much akin to some foreign flag. To your right there is a large, arched double door made of very solid looking wood. You can see that a heavy bar has been laid across it. That must have been what kept you from getting inside last night!

You have a few options for whatever it is you want to accomplish today. Do you...

>Go explore the upper sections of the tower?
>Go back and continue exploring the lower sections of the tower?
>Go outside and explore the courtyard some more?

You stand and stretch, then pick your staff up off the floor. You guess now is as good a time as any to discover what else is in the tower. The Corpse thing, Nesus, said that some of Sindarius' stuff should still be around, and you can imagine that the possessions of an ancient Archmagi are wondrous artifacts indeed.

You walk across the barren marble floor to the other end of the room and ascend the steps, emerging on the second level. It seems just as big as the main floor, the only major physical difference being the large green stained glass window overlooking the courtyard. Light is currently streaming into the room, throwing green patterns across the floor. You also notice that the ceiling of the room is made of dark wood, as opposed to the marble that has so far marked the tower.

>This room appears to be empty at the moment. Perhaps you could put something in here when you have things to put places.

Well, that sure was an informative bout of exploration. Do you...

Well, the Corpse did say that there was a library on the third floor, and that would be the floor right above you. You ascend the marble steps once more and find yourself looking into one of the most cozy rooms you have ever seen. Tall wooden bookshelves line the circular chamber, going all the way up to the ceiling. Opposite your position in the room is a large stone fireplace, complete with a burning fire and logs and all the other things a comfy fireplace should have. A big, plush blue chair sits in front of the fireplace, with a small table right next to it, stacked high with all manner of books.

On the west end of the room is a mirror hanging between a gap in the bookshelves, big enough that you could walk right through it were it a door. The frame is carved in a gleaming metal, possibly silver. There are funny looking runes etched into the floor in front of it.

>Congratulations! You have found the library! This gives you access to studying and learning magic and principles related to magic!

Well this was a nice little discovery. Based on the height of the tower and the height of the rooms, you can guess that there are two more levels to the tower. Do you...

Right then. You suppose that since you're already here, you may as well browse through the library and see what you can see.

You begin to peruse the books on the shelves, looking for anything moderately interesting.
“Summoning: A Treatise on Spirits and the Ether” That might be fairly informative. Flipping it open you see that it's full of strange runes and terminologies.
“On Magic and the Soul” This seems like a good basic thing to begin learning from. It has nicely formed paragraphs in plain simple language. Nothing fancy, though you doubt it'll do much in the way of teaching you actual magic.
“The Principles of Rogeth” A small, leather book, looking more like a journal than anything else. The writing is neat, but it seems to ramble in places. It looks like it might have something to do with shaping the inner soul into useful things.
“Sorcery Across the Ages” This book seems to have all sorts of descriptions of incantations and basic spells.
“The Binding: Principles of The Soul” This is a large, dusty tome containing information related to the capture and binding of spirits into items.

Which book do you decide to read?

“The Principles of Rogeth”

The best type of magic, is the one that comes from within.
>>

I say start with the basic “On Magic and the Soul” seeing as we pretty much know nothing about magic
>>

>“The Binding: Principles of The Soul” This is a large, dusty tome containing information related to the capture and binding of spirits into items.
I really, really want to start making artifacts.
>>
>>30411239
Second this.

I'd rather have sorcery across the ages, but an introductory book is good nonetheless
>>
>On Magic and the Soul

"It has long been the subject of the greatest debate of metaphysics; Does the spirit exist because of magic, or does magic exist because of the spirit? Many of the greatest Magi have pondered long and hard over such questions, a long list including Sindarius the Great, Seer Rogeth, King Nesus, and Calib the Wise to name a few. The question can only truly be examined though when it is taken into account the many forms and evocations that are used in the power of magic..."

You continue to read on, though its scholorly droning starts to wear at your brain. Whatever, you feel as if you have a better grasp as to what exactly magic is now. You bet that your future studies will go a bit faster now! (+10% research and study speed)

Putting the book down, you stand and stretch as your stomach lets out a loud grumble. Oh yeah, you're kind of hungry. It might be wise to find some food somewhere.

Do you...?

Sure, that seems reasonable.
>>
(1/2)

Driven by your awakened sense of hunger, you head back downstairs. You remember seeing a room full of sacks and crates and wine while you were exploring the cellar, maybe there's something in there that you can eat?

Past the empty room, past the foyer, down into the atrium of the lower level, then back upstairs again into the cellar hallway. So many stairs that by the time you reach the room with the racks of wine, your legs are starting to burn a bit. They must still be sore from the long run you had last night.

Before you enter the stockroom, you decide that it may be wise to check on the cellar door. It's as closed as you left it, but you take it upon yourself to slide the locking bar into place anyways. After all, you don't want anything sneaking into the tower and catching you unawares.

=

The stockroom is full of crates containing dried vegetables, grains, jars of fruit in fancy looking glass cases, and all sorts of other food-like materials. The only thing you see that isn't in abundance is meat products. You suppose you can sit and take your fill though.
>>
>>30411517
(2/2)

As you finish up a jar of red berries, you hear what sounds like shouting coming from up above the cellar door in the courtyard. The voice is loud, VERY loud, but does not seem threatening or unfriendly. You wonder who, or what, it could be?

>What do you do, young child?
>>
>>30411542
Is there a window facing that side of the tower ? If so go have a look at the person knocking.

>>
>>30411596

>>
>>30411578
This. If no window available put your ear to either the basement door or the front door and see if you recognise the voice.
>>
>>30411606
Oh then>>30411578
Seems good
>>
You remember the window on the second story of the tower, and, as quickly as you can, you try to make your way back there. Down the stairs in the cellar, through the atrium, back up the stairs to the foyer, across the room to the marble staircase, and then up one flight.
Phew.

You need to get in shape.

Once you got up into the foyer, you could hear the man shouting a bit clearer. He seems to be lost, poor fellow, shouting if there is anyone there. Looking out through the stained glass of the empty room, you can barely see a large figure with long black hair standing in the middle of the courtyard. He's decked out in heavy looking armor with menacing spikes jutting from all sorts of angles. You can't see his face very well, but you're sure you've never seen him before.

>You could leave this guy, after all he might be trouble. Or perhaps you could go out and greet him? You don't see any weapons on his person, just that scary looking armor...

>What do you do, young child?
>>
>>30411700
Just wait until they go away, we don't want no trouble. At least until we can actually cast a spell.
>>
>>30411700
Oh boy. I'd say we keep watching him for a while and try not to be noticed.

Even without weapons he'd probably fuck us up if he means harm.
>>
>>30411700
Go back down to the cellar, listen to what he has to say.
>>
>>30411801
This. Let's at least give the guy a chance.
>>
Would any of you like to attempt to communicate with the mystery man, or are you to be a silent observer?
>>
>>30411890
Silent
>>
>>30411890
Depends. If he's going to break down the door then yes, if not I'd rather listen to what he has to say before taking this decision.
>>
>>30411890
Before we do anything other than our staff is there anything else to defend ourselves with?
>>
>>30411890
Observe him for a while and see if we get any new information about him.

I guess that's silent
>>
>>30411934
Not that you have seen thus far, though you have yet to explore the rest of the lower levels of the tower, and there is still one more floor to the tower proper left unseen.
>>
You decide that it might be best to listen more to what he has to say before you answer him. You briefly think about going back to the cellar to listen to him through the door, but then you realize that you're just as likely to hear what he is saying in the foyer.

“Help me, please!” The voice seems a desperate shout. “I've no money to pay you, but I can offer my service! Please, show me mercy! I've been lost for two days with no food or shelter! If anyone is there, let me in I beg!”

Well, it certainly sounds like an honest plea. But why would a man with armor like that be lost this far north up the coast? The nearest town to your village was a full week to the south, and even there they wouldn't have had a blacksmith skilled enough to make armor such as that.

His shouts seem to be getting weaker. He sounds like he might be ready to give up. If you're to make your presence known, it is suggested that you do so quickly.

Do you...

Exactly, we should learn more spells first.
>>
I say let him in. We're in a big tower and we have a staff, I'm sure we could bluff our way as a wizard or something.
>>
>>30412252
That's right, I forgot. Let's hear him out and see if the defenses work.

Then again, skellybro said the tower will defend itself, and us only by extension I guess
>>

>Let him in?

I don't really think we should let a dude possibly die of thirst because of paranoia.

Maybe should from a balcony or something. Ask him who he is.
>>
>>30412304
That's my point, if he start trying to break the door I bet it's gonna give him a run for his money.

>>30412308
Let's not get outside in any way. If he's a mage it might give him a chance to enchant us or something.
>>
It's kind of a big debate. On the one hand, if you let him in and he's dangerous he could very easily kill your scrawny ass. On the other hand though, he did say he would pay with a service. It might be useful to have a tough looking guy like that hanging around with you.

You eventually decide that you should go ask him a few questions, but you can't figure out any way to speak with him without going outside yourself. If only you had a balcony here instead of this green window....

You stamp your staff on the floor, and sparks fly. You feel, for a moment, like you are underwater, and something heavy has just passed you by. A wave of.. something.. washing over you. Your vision blurs for a moment, and you hear a ringing in your ears. Then, just as quickly as it came, the feeling stops. You're left standing in front of an arched opening leading out to a large balcony.

Well. It seems the tower is magic after all.

You step out onto the semicircular balcony and grasp one of the elegant iron rails with one hand, holding the staff by your side with the other. Wait, what were you going to say to this man again...?

Could be safer to bluff and not let him know it's just a weak-ass boy in here.
>>
>>30412510
Said weak ass boy just made a balcony appear out of nowhere. I don't think he's gonna assume we can't handle ourselves now.

>>
>>30412580
Weeell. It's half-truths. There is some crazy ass skeleton king in the basement.

Oh well, no lies for now.
>>
“Who are you, and what are you doing here?”

You try to sound as loud and intimidating as possible. Growing up with no one around but your uncle, you didn't often have to speak to people. You were kind of a shut-in, relying on food from neighbors and the generosity of the village to get by, and when you weren't taking care of your uncle inside your little shack, you were wandering the woods or sitting on your perch up on the slopes.

The man below you raises his head to look at you. You're surprised to see that he wears a plain dull gray mask, fashioned with hard lines and a small mouth slit. It appears to be made of some sort of metal, maybe iron. “I'm a soldier looking for quarter. Please sir, I've been wandering for two days with no food and I'm on my last legs. Please just throw me some food, let me sleep in the stables. I won't be a bother, I swear! I'll even work for you, please, just show some mercy!”

He seems to be sincere, though he didn't entirely answer your questions. Do you want to interrogate him more, or leave him outside, or what?

Hmm. He didn't answer your question the first time, and you aren't very comfortable with that. You gave him your terms, so its only fair that he actually abide by them.

“I did not ask WHAT you are, I ask as to WHO you are.”

Again, you attempt to take on the commanding tone that you heard Nesus use last night. You hope it works.

“Tell me your name and your story, and I will consider your request!”

You notice the man's shoulders bob in what you can only assume to be a sigh as his head drops down, his gaze seeming to settle upon the dirt at his feet.

“And do not try and lie to me! I will be able to tell!”

Ha. Nice flourish you've thrown in there. Of course it's a bold-faced lie, but it isn't like the stranger knows that.
>>
(2/2)
The stranger faces up to you again, this time taking a gauntleted hand and removing the mask from his face. He brushes his long, black hair back and begins his story.

“My name is Brandon. I was the captain of a band of soldier that fought under the banner of a man named Carrigan. Three days ago I learned that he planned to burn down a village up in the mountains, and so I abandoned my post. I have been wandering for the past two days, trying to find some place where I can secure passage back to the south. Please, just give me a bit of bread. You don't even have to let me stay here, I'll be gone at your command.” He falls to his knees, dark hair hanging down over his face.

Wait, burning down a mountain village? This man must know about the raid that destroyed your home! If what he says is true, he had no part in it himself. But if he's lying, there's no telling what he might plan on doing.

You're still not sure if you can trust him, but at least he isn't armed. You disappear from the balcony and take your time going down the stairs and into the cellar to get a loaf of bread and a bottle of wine for your new guest. When you get back to the foyer, you take a moment to straighten out your simple clothes and make yourself seem regal and presentable. You step forward and unbar, then open, the massive double doors.
-------------------------------

The man who stands before you is absolutely massive. If you had to guess as to his height, you would say he's somewhere around seven feet tall. His hands look large enough to palm your head. You can see dusty stubble on his chin, and his eyes are the sort of gray that reminds you of a sky before a storm.
“Many thanks, young lord, for the mercy and hospitality.” His voice seems regal and measured, but you can tell even through his armor that he's shaking from hunger.

You present him with the food, which he practically inhales. He also manages to drain half the bottle of wine before setting it down.

Wow.

If there is an empty room there, then this.

We don't want him in our fancy library, nor do we want him to disturb skellybro.
And putting him in the stables is a dick move.

We should probably look for a matress or at least a blanket he could use. We'll sleep in the comfy library chair tonight. Or maybe there's a bedroom further top.

“.... right here on the first floor. Make no attempts to travel further into the tower.”

That sounds good. Pompous enough to come off as powerful, but not threatening. And he seems to be okay with the arrangement.

“Thank you, young lord,” He bows deeply, wine bottle clutched in his hand, “Your mercy knows no bounds. Please enlighten me though, are you the master of this tower? If not, is he about? I have observed the use of magic in this place in the crafting of the balcony, and if there is indeed a Magi of the Circle about, I have important information to share with them.”

A Magi of the what? What circle? Oh boy, you feel like lying in a situation might get you in a bit over your head. Of course, you could probably bluff long enough to get into the library and figure out what he's talking about. Maybe. And what exactly are you going to do with him around? Continue exploring and waiting for Uncle? What about when your uncle finally shows up? Gah, so many things, so many decisions to make.

“Well,” You begin, “The previous lord of the tower passed on some time ago. I am his heir, and I suppose that means that any information you have to share should be shared with me.” You cross your arms over your scrawny chest, trying as hard as you can to appear intimidating in front of this titan. What you said isn't TECHNICALLY a lie if, as Nesus informed you last night, you are indeed the descendant of Sindarius himself.

The metal man seems to think for a moment, and with a shrug he begins to pass on his information.
“As I said earlier, I was the captain in a band of soldiers under a man named Carrigan. He wanted to burn down some small mountain village because he believed there to be a powerful artifact hidden there, a knife that can assist in rituals of Binding.” He begins to unstrap some of his armor. “If he was in the north looking for powerful magics, it seems inevitable he will find his way to you, young lord.”

You scratch your chin. A magic knife? You don't know anything about a magic knife hidden in your village. You could understand if he were after your uncle's book, which seems to have actually been some sort of Summoning Tome, or possibly even your staff, but a knife?

“What does this Carrigan figure want with a knife?” You ask.
>>
(2/2)
Brandon continues stripping off his armor, showing you that even without all of the metal he is still a physically imposing man. “I did not question, it was not my place. So long as innocent lives weren't hurt in the process, I was obligated to follow this man until the other captains decided that we no longer needed his money. I do know that he did not seem the most stable sort, often rambling about ascension and devil princes and such.”

“Anyways, it would be wise for someone in the south to be notified that there is a madman with a small army in the north, burning down villages for magical artifacts. If you can send an epistle south to Erodayne or even Arcin, I suggest you do so at once.”

With that, Brandon asks for permission to be excused and rest.

Does he?
>"He'll bind spirits to his own soul instead of summoning and shaping them like everyone else. My guess is that he was trying to find something powerful hidden in your village to bind to his soul, which brings me to your next question...."

I see nothing there about possession.
>>
>>30414821
It sounds like he can posses people if he bound some one else to his spirit.

>>30414821

>>
“You can make yourself at home,” you say, giving your best attempt at a friendly smile. It's probably best to be friends with Mount Muscle. “But there is one thing I want to ask you first. It's about Carrigan and his rambling.”

Brandon finishes taking off his armor and places it on the floor before once again standing tall in front of you. His clothes are simple, white woolen shirt and brown woolen pants. He doesn't seem the part of a wealthy aristocrat or anything like that. “Well, mostly it was mumbles about how one day he would have a power to rival that of the gods, or he would preach about the divinity of man, how it is our destiny to become the lords of our own fate.” He shrugs a bit, huge muscled shoulders rising and falling. “I'm not sure. It all sounded like nonsense to me. I do recall one particularly heated sermon in which he claimed to be harnessing the power of the Princes of Hell themselves, but we soldiers dismissed it as crazy talk.”

You nod, trying to appear knowing and sagely. “Very well then, Brandon. Thank you for the information. You are dismissed.”

The large man stretches and walks to the same part of the room you slept in last night. As he begins to settle down, you turn your mind towards your next task. What should you do? Do you...

We might wanna study the library for a way to send a message like Brandon suggested. I don't think we should wait too long on that. On the other hand maybe we find something that could help us with that in the cellar or the top of the tower.

Studying can wait. You should probably explore that last level of the tower anyways, see exactly what it is you're dealing with.

You leave Brandon behind and head up the marble stairs, past the empty room, past the library, and find yourself in a bit of an odd looking room when you consider the rest of the tower. Unlike the other rooms, this one is not round, possessing four walls. Each wall has a giant rectangular window set into the side, giving you an amazing view of every direction. You can see the sun just about to set over the horizon in the west beyond the waves. The mountains to the east are lit up brilliantly.

There are shelves all around with many strange looking alchemical devices, many maps and charts of stars, odd tools with hooks and prongs, cabinets filled with blank parchment and even one particularly ornate china cabinet containing a plethora of silverware. In the middle of the large square room is a grand dining table, intricately designed and carved from what appears to be a single piece of wood.

A ladder descends from one corner of the room, leading up to a loft that covers the northern half like a ceiling. Above the loft, in the shape of a dome, a lattice of iron holds glass panels in place that give you an amazing view of the sky. You bet that when the sun goes down you'll have a breathtaking view of the stars.

This must be the Archmagi's Quarters.

Now you've found a place to sleep at least. You can assume that there is a bed up on the balcony, even if you don't know that for certain. It's going to be dark soon though, and you may as well go explore the rest of the tower.

Arming yourself with your staff, you descend the stairs down to the foyer, where Brandon is fast asleep against a wall. The empty wine bottle rolling around by his side tells you that he won't be sleeping lightly at least.

As you continue to go lower, down into the Atrium, you take in all the details that you barely noticed before. While the walls are made of the same dark gray stone as the tower above, the floor is cut from a brilliant white marble that seems polished enough to show your reflection. A large circle of blue granite marks the very center of the Atrium. You stride across the floor to the closed door at the opposite end of the room.

As you press the old wooden door open and look down the steep, shadowy stairway, you can almost imagine that you hear a wailing from somewhere below. Surely that's just your imagination though, right? You grab one of the magically lit torches from the wall and stand at the edge of the stairs.

the IV? Is he on life support or something?

Well. All or nothing, you suppose. Reaffirming your grip on the staff and the torch, you make your way down the steep stairs. They seem to go on forever, and it feels like minutes have gone by before you reach the bottom. The walls down here seem more cut right from the rock than shaped in any sort of way.

You stand in a hallway much like the one in the cellar. To your right, a doorway reveals a small room with what looks like a well in it. The doorway on your left leads to a room full of chairs, couches, and other assorted furniture. You see at the end of the hallway, past a few more doors and a larger alcove bathed in a lone shaft of light, a strange looking figure covered in dusty cobwebs. As you approach it, it raises its head and a soft yellow light fills its sculpted eye sockets. It pulls itself from the wall, trailing behind cobwebs and dust, and takes a shaky step towards you.

“Goodevening, master Marcus. I have long awaited your return.”
