So I'm planning a campaign set in the 1990s and I'm wondering if y'all fa/tg/entlemen can pitch in with ideas and info on 1990s culture.

I was a young child so at best, so all I remember is stuff about yoyos and skate/surfboards and boogers.

Why don't I tell you a story all about how, my campaign got flipped turned upside down.

Nirvana was bretty gud.
>>
90's was buzzword central, it was really a time of budding future promise, after the absurd and self-absorbed 80's.

It was a time when more people talked about things like "e-mail" and "the internet" than actually used it (at least at first) and a stark divide in generations (boomers vs Gen-X and even Gen-Y to some point) could be seen in the way they approached and adopted new ideas, especially new technologies.

Things in the 90's changed faster and had greater impact than I think a lot of people realized at the time. It was like a river with a strong undertoe: on the surface it looked still, but underneath there was a raging current that was not immediately apparent.

When the 90's began, people were uncertain about what tomorrow might bring. When it ended, the only thing they were certain of was that tomorrow would bring something new and different.

"The end of history." The view was that the rules didn't apply anymore. After a long scary cold war, the Soviet Union disintegrated without warning. Ordinary people rose up and more-or-less bloodlessly eliminated all our national enemies.

(a wee bit of /pol/ here, sorry). Conservatives were thrown for a loop because they were united for forty years by opposition to communism. Without that glue, suddenly their factions started in-fighting. Nobody on the Right expected the Soviets to just go away. But they were also vindicated; everyone in eastern europe were finally allowed to say how terrible things were under socialism. Social and economic equality, the environment, human rights, everything was much worse.

Liberals were even more screwed. They spent the whole 80's saying that crazy Reagan was going to start a war because he was afraid of the peace-loving communists. Then suddenly the berlin wall fell and people started finding out in detail what the socialists were planning, and it was worse than even the conservatives were saying.

Meanwhile, the laws of economics seem to have been rescinded. The economy just grew and grew. People had mostly forgotten about the 70s (a decade much like this one where everything's going wrong). In the 80's the economy had been incredibly good, and after a short mild recession (that still horrified people at the time) things went right back to being great. Clinton had his antics and so did Newt Gingrich but who cares? Things are going great. The web was changing EVERYTHING.

It's a shitty song and a corporate pop band, but the Spice Girls are 90s as fuck :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ro0FW9Qt-4
Girls were hot as fuck, back in the day, and I completely missed it.

Pearl jam sucks, but Jeremy was dope as fuck
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS91knuzoOA
90s as fuck, kid brings a gun to school, commits suicide in front of calss. Banned from MTV. You could totally see them not wanting to take responsibility for someone being inspired by the video.

Ultima Online - The entire idea of the internet and playing games online was an all-new thing. You could actually play the game, earn items, craft virtual items in-game and then sell it for real-life money - people were making thousands off it, some even quit there full-time jobs and made a living doing it - crazy shit! Newsweek even did a story on it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKi30ZsQp9M

Game companies got wise to this shit, and put the kibosh on it. Now most games will ban you for IRL money trading, only Eve Online allows it, and even then there are massive restrictions.

Bloodhound Gang - The Bad Touch
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xat1GVnl8-k
LOL, lowbrow humor. This video was banned from MTV because they beat on two gay sailors in one scene. Now you can't even speak a word about gay degeneracy without being labelled a homophobe.

Britney Spears - Baby One more Time
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-u5WLJ9Yk4
This bitch blew up the charts like you would not believe. The schoolgirl outfit bit and the Rolling Stone cover was the hot topic of the moment. She would go on to set all-time records for albums sold by a female artist.

Christina Aguilera - Genie In A Bottle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIDWgqDBNXA
Britney's sluttier cousin! This video is like nursery school to the shit she put out later. But at the time, we had no idea.

JoJo - Leave (Get Out)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggWyUEuGcWY
Jojo was late to the party, put out exactly one video, then dropped off the map. I guess two pop starlets was enough, 90s teens didn't need a third.

Eminem - My Name Is
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNPnbI1arSE
LOL everyone lost their shit over Eminem, just completely lost it. Bill O'Reilly damn near had an aneurysm because of him. What's amazing is how soft and pop this song is compared to everything he put out later. Very lulzy in retrospect.

Limp Bizkit
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpUYjpKg9KY
For good or evil, can't talk about the 90s without Mr. Durst. This song was blamed for the riots at Woodstock 1999. MTV refused to play this too, until they released the most watered-down, milktoast video they possibly could.

She's promoting Mean Girls, which was its own huge thing in 2000. I like the bit when someone confuses her with Hilary Duff and she loses it for a sec, they had a HUGE rivalry at the time. There was a Betty vs. Veronica vibe at the time, and she was definitely the Veronica.

Where the 60s made sex and drugs an issue, the 90s glorified it for the normal man. We were in a happy medium where everyone was making money, you could get away with things as long as you didn't hurt anyone, social justice meant leaving each other alone, and the president was getting blowies while money rained down upon him.

Technology exploded, I went from shitty PC's at school and dialup to a personal computer that could play games online with friends. Cellphones became a thing, then a cool thing, then a mandatory thing over the course of 10 years.

People mostly stopped getting married before 25. We all grew to want to work and succeed and get our piece of the pie. We were doing great everywhere.

Then bush and the 9/11 lies happened. Now we live in a pre apocolyptic age of depression, selfishness, and self destruction.

Warhammer 40,000 second edition

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Warhammer_40,000_%282nd_Edition%29#.UsaGTLRWpwF

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/File:2nd_Edition_Set.jpg#.UsaGorRWpwE

D&D doesn't count, cuz it was still creaking along with it's "not-quite-a-new-edition" 2-and-a-half edition, but in 1993, Game sWorkshop blew the doors off the fucking hinges with a massive new introductory box set of its flagship tabletop miniatures game. It had three rulebooks, card terrain, and 80 figures for 80 dollars. Even if most of those were useless Gretchin and very average Orks, it was still an amazing deal.

Seriously, look at this fucking cover art:
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/File:Warhammer_40000_2nd_edition.jpg#.UsaGqLRWpwE
Imagine being 11 or 12 years old boy and seeing this shit. You'd just about lose your goddamn mind.

The models and art may not hold up well today, but the idea of getting an entire tabletop game in a box was kinda revolutionary. Game Workshop still puts out introductory box sets today, and in the expensive world of hobbby tabletop games, they're still good value.

By the end of the 1990s, Games Workshop prices had gotten a little too high, and a slew of imitators like Vor: the Maelstrom and Warzone appeared, each with their own "all-in-one" box sets:

http://theminiaturespage.com/rules/scf/vor.html
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/4978/warzone-second-edition

warzone's second edition box set came with 80 figures for $80 as well, and they were a better value. Games Workshop's second edition box set was looking a little long in the tooth. Could Games Workshops stranglehold on the tabletop game be toppled?

NO MOTHERFUCKER! AND YOU KNOW WHY?! BECASUE IN GODDAMN 1999, GAMES WORKSHOP RELEASED A -THIRD- EDITION BOX SET THAT BLEW THE DOORS OF THE FUCKING HINGES - AGAIN!

http://towerofzenopus.bl0gsp0t.com/2012/03/grim-darkness-n-far-future-25-years-of.html

The box sets came with 10 Space Marines instead of 20, but they were now multi-pose models (holy shit!) and they came with a fucking VEHICLE! A brand-new hovercraft called a Landpseeder! Initially derided as a "flying Acura," gamers quickly decided the idea of getting a full-size rulebook and an entire vehicle in a basic boxed game was the absolite greatest thng ever.

The boxed game even came with a whole new alien enemy - the Dark Eldar. Essentially evil space elves from across the galaxy with sort of an S&M fetish. They were quickly written off as being useless, but the rest of the box set was incredible value.

Too good, in fact. One could buy the $80 box set at a convention on discount for $50 or $55, and then sell the full-size ruleboooks to existing gamers for $30, the rest being pure profit. Even though the Dark Eldar were useless, the thought of getting an entire 10-man Space Marine Tactical Squad *and* a Landspeeder for $25 or $30 was unbelievable.

Unbelievable was the word - Games Workshop was none too happy gamers were quickly divvying up the contents of their flagship box set and selling it piecemeal. I know I bought several at conventions, and did plenty of wheeling and dealing of my own.

After that no box set would ever offer as good of a deal as the third edition box set. Game boxes would only come with a mini-rulebook, and the deals from then on out were never as good.

But for the time, we had no idea of what was to come, and whooped it up, acquiring mass loads of Space Marines and Landspeeders for next to nothing.

Gorkamorka! In an effort to squeeze more money outta there customers, GW released a series of "six-month" games, games designed to be supported for six months only, then dropped.

First, Necromunda came out, and blew the doors off the fucking hinges. Everyone loved this wargame-crossed-with-a-RPG, it had a futuristic post apocalypse Borderlands like feel.

So of course, GW followed it up with Gorkamorka, a similar game about Orks that was the same system as Necromunda, but added vehicle rules. Surely it would be a hit, right?

WRONG.

The game bombed, and nearly bankrupted GW if you believe the rumors. It sold so poorly that at one point they'd GIVE you a copy of this $80 game if you took out a subscription to White Dwarf.

Still it was mad fun, if a bit limited. Driving around like a nutter with your Ork warband, mixing it up with other Ork mobs, scavenging scrap to sell for money so you could upgrade your warbands weapons, armor, gear and vehicles? Good stuff!

Mechwarrior / Battletech game series.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-X3GD0UnBCk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZWxgLQZano

Based on the 80s sci-fi tabletop game (that itself was looking a little long in the tooth by the 90s) Microsoft made a series of video games set in the Battletech universe. Players took the role of "mechwarriors" or pilots who pilot giant walking fighting machines called battlemechs in combat against enemy military forces.

Unlike Pacific Rim, the machines were portrayed as realistic armored fighting vehicles (similar to tanks) and were used as part of military engagements.

The series was popular enough that there was even a Battletech Saturday Morning cartoon show made, though it is quite skippable.

The live-action videos of the old games don't hold up the best, but they are short and quite fun to watch. The tabletop and video game series is still being made, and an MMO, Mechwarrior Online is also available now:

Back then, anime was expensive to license and release, so only the best of the best made across the pond.

While everyone knows JK Rowling is the richest woman in Britain for writing Harry Potter, almost no-one knows who Rumiko Takahashi is, or that she was once the richest woman in Japan for writing the serialized manga/comic Ranma 1/2

For 90s teen agst, you cant beat Neon Genesis Evangelion.

The series sole letdown is the last episode, which I won't spoil.

Ranma 1/2 is a standard harem comedy that did not age well. Leave those emmories in the past guys.

OK "the web is changing everything". People really believed this. They didn't know what would change or how, but it was going to be AWESOME and the laws of economics were over. Serious, well-regarded journalists called it "the end of history".

Early on, people spent a lot of time talking about how incredible VR was going to be. Just try to tack "virtual" onto anything before 1995. After that, stick "web" or "dot com" on instead, and suddenly it's all about the web. People were giddy, maybe even drunk. I can't even tell you what it was like to work in that environment. A few weeks of study of the then-simple HTML and you, too, could get a high-paying job as a web developer. Headhunters were independent contractors hired by corporations to find employees-- that's how many jobs there were. Pay was high, and you had nap rooms and chair massages and espresso bars and game rooms. I'm dead serious.

There were international threats. Al Qaeda's strength continually grew in the 90's, and they staged several successful attacks, some with huge loss of life. There were two genocides: the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda. People mostly ignored them. Suspicion and paranoia about the government was a part of pop culture. X-files was part of it, but I think it was fueled by the fact that conspiracy theorists could compare notes and it went viral. Also, with no serious problems, people could afford to indulge themselves. On the right, religious conservatives could obsess about abortion. Clinton represented fusionism: a charismatic, moderate, slightly corrupt democrat. His favorite phrase was to reject the "false choice" between something and something else. So we could have low taxes and high spending and still run a surplus. People mostly ignored hard-core liberals after the 70's and the collapse of the USSR. The height of the loony Right wing was the OK City bombing by conspiracy theorist Timothy McVeigh, and the Olympic park bombing by anti-abortion nut Eric Rudolph.

The 90's were a bizzare mixture of optimism and cynicism. 90's kids were jaded and sharp witted on TV. The deadpan snarker as a character became the leading man. Action heroes went from grizzled badasses to witty tricksters. Anyone over 30 was seen as a greedy fuddy duddy, politics was a joke, and everything was about what was hip and cool in the now.

Technology was changing rapidly, and no-one knew where it would go. Cellphones were first becoming a thing. The internet was first born, and even as a useless and primitive toy it blew our minds. Anything Japanese was inherently hightech and futuristic.

If you were an entrepreneur, basically any business model or none at all could get you millions in venture capital. Hordes of irresponsible people were building huge businesses that did basically nothing at all, then collapsing. Investors didn't care; the few that hit, hit insanely big. Nobody knew anything about the Web, but they knew it would change everything.

Culture. Ok, "alternative" hit in the early 90's and hit very hard. People weren't used to having so many subcultures thriving at once. Each one ended up becoming corrupt and self-parodying... very very fast. REM and its jangle-pop sound eventually turned into barefoot douchebags with acoustic guitars playing in college quads, eventually leading to John Mayer. Pearl Jam's grunge was supposed to be a more "real" reaction against cookie-cutter 80's cheese metal, but they spawned a legion of imitators who were worse than the bands they hated. Tori Amos spawned a legion of victimized feminist piano singer/songwriter acts. Industrial bands like Ministry and later Nine Inch Nails chugged along; I suppose Marilyn Manson represents its corruption but really they just played a lot of quake and grew old. Eventually the whole dance/rave/electronica/trip hop/drum&bass thing appeared, more or less out of techno. It was the only stuff that got BETTER as the 90's went on.

Goth made a comeback in a big way. D&D was totally replaced by Vampire: the Masquerade, and was played by real sexy cool people who wouldn't have been caught dead on /tg/. 80's new wave was revived almost as soon as it died, with "dark wave" being especially popular. 80's nights at night clubs were packed with goths. Goth chicks in the early 90's were in their late teens/early 20's and extremely hot. Goth chicks in the late 90's were older and much fatter, but still tried to squeeze into the same clothes.

Pretty much every girl was bisexual or lesbian in the 90's.

OK, so sexuality was... fluid. Most girls I know experimented with girl/girl -- even some hard-core Christians, because they were drunk and curious and it was sexy and forbidden. Several came out publicly as bi. Only a couple are STILL bi... most quietly stopped talking about it and settled down with men. In the early 90's, this happened a little among guys, and again, many bi boys went back to straight. It being acceptable was still new enough that it was daring and bold to come out, so lots of people did it who weren't really gay to begin with. In my bible-belt city, you'd see hot girls fondling one another and making out in the street-- supposedly as a political statement but partly because it was hot and they knew it.

This was greatly helped by religious right douchebags who did everything they could to make themselves socially toxic. If you play one as an NPC, give him that snide, self-congratulating smile of someone who's cheating in a boardgame but is still going to self-righteously take offense and flip the table if you call him on it. Not helping at all were feminists. Feminists in the 80s but especially the 90s were humorless, dowdy, asexual, and mean. "Sexist" in their minds meant "anything fun".

www.whitehouse.com was a porn site. Thanks to Bill Clinton, so was www.whitehouse.gov. But at least he was having fun. Honestly, there were lots of other scandals that actually were pretty bad but nobody cared because things were going great. As in, high on ecstacy under a double rainbow getting blown by two hot chicks great. Bob Dole famously campaigned on a platform of "I'll increase government spending by 2.1% instead of 2.7%." Two years later, he was the official spokesperson for impotence.

In the late 90s and early 2000s there was a push from a bunch of toy and novelty companies to make classic, easy to manufacture toys cool again, generally by calling them Xtreme and putting kids with sunglasses and backwards hats in the commercials. Extreme Jacks were briefly a thing, and super soakers were really just squirt guns but bigger, more expensive, and totally sick.

The biggest real threat to the world was Bill Gates, who's microsoft windows was blue-screening on every computer on earth. Apple was teetering on the brink and would be going bankrupt Any Day Now. PC games rocked. The 90's started with Doom!, ended with Starcraft, and you had X-wing and TIE fighter in between. And Quake. And Civilization. And Myst.

The entire younger generation was dragooned into an unpaid IT department for their parents, who had just gotten the internet and were constantly screwing up their computers. "I deleted the Internet from my desktop!" was a common panicked complaint.

Porn went mainstream very fast. People didn't understand anonymity and the permanence of the web yet, so it was common for early 20somethings to do porn sites. Also, videos and photos taken by boyfriends for years could suddenly be broadcast to the world. And were. The internet was basically completely unregulated. You could basically do whatever you wanted with minimal investment, training, and equipment. The NSA/Secret Service/FBI warned that all that freedom was dangerous and had to be stopped. Eventually, slowly, quietly, they won.

In addition to X-files, you had Babylon 5, but honestly THE show to watch was Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. Even more than Friends.

Crime was going down. Again, no discernible reason, just part of the general "everything rocks" sense of the 90's. I remember one friend in NYC who was horrified that his city was losing its "character" because there weren't constant muggings and break-ins. He hated Giuliani at the time for it. I'm serious. Much as it contrasted itself at the time with the 80's, they had a lot in common. Especially how well things were going. By the end, there was a sense that This Can't Go On Forever. Part of that was Y2K, and part was the realization that the laws of economics hadn't been repealed after all.

So basically it'd be a tabletop game set in the 90s about a bunch of nerds sitting down playing a tabletop game of Warhammer 40K?

Bill Clinton was the shit. One of my memories from the 90s was our family at Arlington Cemetery for Memorial Day. My hardcore republican Dad stood up and cheered for him when he took the podium at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (now the Tomb of the Unknowns).

Bill Clinton and Congressmen were able to bridge the gap between the parties to reach compromise far more easily than the 2000s and today.

I remember after September 11th seeing members of congress supposedly spontaneously start singing God Bless America and the reporters commenting that they had never seen such unity... implying they were bitterly divided. They had no clue what was to come.

So that's all I can think of. I tried to skimp on pop culture because other anons have that one covered. I really should go more into talking about working in the 90's.

If you grew up in the 2000's, then you have no idea at all what a good economy looks like. The 2000s were mostly ok until the end, and ever since they've sucked donkey dick. In the 90's, any idiot could and did get a high-paying job on poor or no credentials. If you could fake some simply buzzwords like "cyber" and "virtual", you could make six figures. I mean it-- I saw it happen.

The money and fun were flowing. Companies were desperate to get good people. They paid high salaries, stuck in crazy good perks, relaxed dress codes, put up with all kinds of shit. Everything was on the expense account. Everyone got a pager, and then later a cell phone, and then later a Blackberry pager. :) If you were any good at your job, you had to hide your phone number lest headhunters inundate you with job offers. I'm dead serious here. A good sign that were too young to have worked in the dot com years is that you think I'm exaggerating here.

I knew several wealthy and successful geeks who hooked up with sexy gothic porn red-head porn chicks. The cheerful slightly overweight bearded hacker was a cliche, and those slutty red heads were, too, oddly. Both were a little autistic by /tg/ lingo but mostly friendly.

Blow jobs were like anal or a threesome in 1990: something that maybe you'd get if you were lucky from the wrong kind of girl but don't count on it. By 2000, it counted as getting to third base.

China and India were both doing well, but mostly producing crappy products and crappy customer support lines. The idea that either was a rising economic challenge to America was both obvious if you looked and totally laughable by the conventional wisdom of the age.

Napster launched in 1999, accelerating the internet and music scene dynamic and then changing into something else. Keep in mind that music was still readily available before with forms, angelfire blogs, audio search engines like Alta Vista and even AOL instant messenger supported file sharing.

If you haven't seen it yet, Anamanaguchi made a music video last year in homage to the '90s: youtube.com/watch?v=vc3JWo2iiGc. In terms of style it's pretty accurate I'd say. We all spent a lot of time at the arcades. Also moot makes an appearance

Oh, one last thing. Since this is 4chan...

Don't call it anime. Call it "japanimation" and restrict yourself to the most obvious well known titles. Back in the 90's, especially the early 90's, pretty much anyone who'd seen Akira could count as a serious enthusiast. The internet made it possible to go way deeper than was possible before.

But attached to it was a very strong stigma. It's a nerdy neckbeard obsession, most of the stuff is either porn or pedophilia or wildly violent or all of the above. Only the beardiest of necks would get into anime. It was well below star trek fandom in status, much like erotic furry fanfic is today. Make sure to use words like hentai incorrectly, or to use awkward english phrases instead of anime lingo. Like "that schoolgirl lesbian thing they always do" instead of just calling it yuri. Most of these terms didn't get popularized in the US until much later.

That's the other thing. Lots of geeky stuff like cosplay and gaming was heavily stigmatized. You'd NEVER be into that shit, and if you were you'd certainly never admit to it.
>>

Where I live it was mostly time of Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z for us kiddos. Time when we were playing silly games, pretending to be X-men, soldiers, characters from Lion King, Roman Legionnaires, when we were jumping on roofs of buildings and kicking ball (sometimes even a few of those at once). You were visiting bazaars to buy some cracked games full of viruses and amateur translators and had a fuckload of fun with them.

The 90's were also the time when the Asian finance bubble exploded ruining Japan and seeing the raise of China. It was the time of the Gulf War and the intervention in Somalia. Genocide going on in Europe. My country had a marihuana boom. Coffee shops at every corner. The CD ROM were getting more and more popular. Still remember that one could buy clip arts collections on CD. Handy's got more portable. Glorious Ericsson T28.

Lohan, believe it or not, is 27. She just looks 40. In 1990, she was four years old.

If you want It Girls of the 1990's... Neve Campbell was incredible. Especially after Wild Things (with Denise Richards, also hot). Every girl wanted to be Jennifer Aniston, and most had the layered hairdo to prove it. Two child stars of the 80's, Drew Barrymore and Alyssa Milano, did a string of really hot, really awful b-movies while going through their train wreck phases. At the end of the 90's, both started their comebacks (Charmed and Wedding Singer).

Most geeks had hard-ons for any of the Buffy/Angel girls, as well as Claudia Christian and Gillian Anderson. Natalie Portman was her very own meme over at slashdot, until something happened with legal and taking about her naked and petrified was suddenly grounds for a permaban.

Most of those chicks are doing very well now, happily. Most are married with kids and doing well. Britany Spears appeared right at the end, and was the first of the Trainwreck Girls.

One important thing to note about the 90's is the hard-on they had for every other decade.

With the millennium ending, there was a big resurgence of interest in classic cartoons, film and pop culture. Movies like The Mask, The Rocketeer and Austin Powers are good examples. This mostly died when Pleasantville came out, leading to the anti-nostalgia that would rule the 00's.

Out of curiosity, any ideas why Gorkamorka crashed so badly? If the Necromunda engine was so popular, and we've all seen how well Orks are liked here, why didn't it at least break even? Too many people complaining about the same game, just a different wrapper?
>>

It had the problem of being way too specialized, even though Orkz are beloved, they're still not as big a faction as most of the Necromunda groups. Plus GW didn't exactly advertise the fuck out of it (with both ads and shelf space) like they did with Necromunda.

Those of us who *were* into anime (and insisted on "anime", as a shibboleth) called ourselves otaku without a hint of irony. No one on this side of the Pacific had ever heard of Tsutomu Miyazaki.

On the /tg/ side of things, I am astonished to see that no one has yet mentioned Magic: the Gathering, released in 1993 and arguably the closest to mainstream we've ever gotten.

Meanwhile, the moral panic of the 1980s was still in enough people's minds that D&D was far more taboo than anime. Far too many people still believed that Satanic ritual abuse was a real thing until 2000-ish.
>>

In general the 90's can be considered a little more than just 1 January 1990 - 31 December 1999. Considering they're asking mostly about culture it lasts a different amount of time. if American 20 January 1988 - 20 January 2001 can be considered to be "the 90s". If European it could be considered from February 1988 (when Solidarity broke Poland being a part of the Warsaw Pact) to about 2001 (the fallout of the Great Politics Messup mostly settling into what we have today).

So either way it does go from the last couple years of the 80s until basically the Bush-Blair alliance.
>>
>>30352424

I'd honestly say that 9 September 2001 is probably the best date to declare as the official end of the 90s, simply because it drove home the idea of "oh shit, this isn't the 90s any more".
>>
>>30352624
I usually consider it a little earlier in 2001, mostly around about may when it was clear we weren't bouncing back from the Dot Com burst.
>>
>>30352715

I must admit, I was only 13 at the time so I don't remember that point in time all that well, but I THINK the UK didn't suffer as heavily from the dot com bubble as the US did, so 9/11 stands out as a bigger landmark incident. The dot com bubble bursting was probably a bigger deal in the US though.
>>
>>30352903
True, I think 9/11 is probably the bigger one, it was something of the culmination of most the bubbles going pop, as well as, well 9/11.

On a related note, the "nip-slip" became a thing with Sabrina's "boys boys boys" in the 90s, and female pop/rock stars, which had been a steadily mounting phenomena since the 80s, rapidly took a u-turn down into Trashy bubble-pop cocktease territory, culminating with the Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera "rivalry" in 99/00.

Also, the birth of forums and forumspeak, though much of it actually came from USEnet and message boards.

Anyone else remember the Jam/KLF/Ancient Mystics of Mu-Mu?

And lets not forget how Seattle kept trying to get back into the music sceneafter Grunge went the way of disco. I swear I celebrated when Harvey Danger didn't take off after Flagpole Sitta.

Plus the Power Rangers theme tune being a UK number 1 for a week or two, that was amazing. After that, the next thing I remember was Linkin Park, but I think that was after the 90s.

>But attached to it was a very strong stigma. It's a nerdy neckbeard obsession, most of the stuff is either porn or pedophilia or wildly violent or all of the above.

So back in the day, before the Internet was a thing that could handle vidyas and shit, licensed VHS tapes at your rental store were basically the ONLY way anyone ever saw anime. And this meant that basically anyone who watched anime probably saw the same five shows that everyone else did. Not because these shows were particularly good, but because they were the only six shows guaranteed to be on the shelf in your town. Tenchi, Ranma, Dragonball, Vampire Hunter D, Akira, et cetera.

And in the middle of those six or so standard-issue offerings was a little turd called Legend of the Overfiend. A cheesy, shitty tentacle-porn horror thing that for some reason got put on the shelf between the wacky harem show and the show about the scrappy dude in his robot suit fighting aliens. Almost any anime fan over the age of 35 had that moment where they put a cassette in and OH GOD WHAT IS THIS SHIT. And way too many stories about early anime viewings include the phrase "and then the dude suggested we watch something called Overfiend..." For a lot of them, that was the last time they ever watched "japanese cartoons."

The surprise hentai was the main reason why so many people associated anime with creepy, violent fetishes. Legend of the Overfiend was basically the Boku no Pico of its day, only instead of some random person on the internet trying to get you to watch it without telling you what it was, it was a fat neckbeard in your dorm room with a VHS tape in his hand.

Here in Australia the culture lasted for quite a while.
My recollections of the 90’s aren’t exactly clear but I’ll dig up what I can. Your early morning consisted of three cartoons. A rotating variety of cartoons was the first show, the second was Dragon Ball Z or Pokemon and the third show was something you didn’t watch because you had to get to school.

The most stand out thing that I can recall however is how much parodying or poking fun at things was happening all over tv and shit. Maybe this was uniquely Australian, maybe not. But it happened a lot and was generally done in good fun.

The two biggest shows of the decade were Seinfeld and Friends, which basically are responsible for the modern sitcom. Most people agree that The Simpsons was at its best, but they also overrate it highly.

I remember that growing up, there weren’t a lot of rules in place for anyone really, you just kind of wandered the neighbourhood looking for something fun to do, whether that was throwing rocks at cars, going to the movies or an arcade, or magically, heading to someone’s house to play Sega Megadrive (Genesis) or Super Nintendo, later followed by Nintendo 64 and Playstation 1 if they somehow possessed one of these wonder machines.

Runescape came out. Even though it was released in 2001 I’d still consider it a 90’s thing. Back then it was actually cool to play this. Everyone at school was playing it, and I mean everyone. It was basically the CoD of that period. Anyone from your nerd to your sportsman was on it. At least here anyway.

Clothing was jeans and denim jackets but you made sure to have band/artist names in view on your clothing so people would know you were into rap or rock or whatever.

Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat occupied a good deal of people’s afternoons. And there were a whole shit ton of different street fighter editions for some reason.

If you didn’t know a combo or fatality off by heart and there was no older kid around, you were screwed. Then Gamefaqs was born and you’d see kids walking around with sheets of paper covered in moves which made you feel superior if you knew a character's move set off by heart.

Hmmm, culture wise you generally had your split down the middle. Rappers, Hip-Hop, R&B and what have you on the one side. Heavy Metal, Rock, Grunge, Punk and whatever else on the other. The distinction wasn't all that important beyond thinking the other side had shitty taste in music and occasionally trying to kick their teeth down their throat.

Going further on fashion, outside of double denim, there were tracksuits and people who looked like Mad Max rejects wandering around the streets and we also had a lot of Matrix looking types too.

Hmm not sure if it helps at all, but that's the basics of what I recall. I'm sure there's more helpful memories, but I am far too green to remember it all properly.

In general I'd say that the 90's were much more a period of freedom and tolerance than now. People had faith in the recently founded EU. The internet was basically a lawless zone where people could post whatever they want. Laws were less strict and more forgiving in almost every aspect of life. It was a optimistic time, where we thought that the 2000's would be even better. 1997, the Asian financial crises shook us up, but we were still positive about the future. After all, the crisis happened in countries far away that were competing with us. 2001 we finally lost our hopes of a better future after 9/11 (patriot act, war on terror, beginning of police state, increasing intolerance in many aspects of life...).

That said, we should also say that the early 90's were very different from the late 90's.

Old programs largely taken off the air. At one point, Cartoon Network was showing nothing but 2000's cartoons. Oldies radio stations dying in droves. Tons of old movies, cars and houses got "updated" with that era's terrible taste(lens flare, gangsta rims, granite countertops, etc). The once dressy fedora became associated with sperglords.

Most everything pre-2000s got derided as "dated" and rebooted, remodeled or destroyed with a vengeance.

This was just the hurr-de-durr average population though. Users on teh interwebz are a different kettle of fish.

No edge here, it was a joke. People need to stop saying edge all the time, it doesn't mean anything anymore.

That said, the Finnish underground black metal scene was absolutely unironically extreme. So were the Norwegians, but I didn't spend that much time there after the churches started burning so I don't know the specifics of what went on in secret.

Key words: dot com, information superhighway, "cyber" being used as a prefix for EVERYTHING, "surfing", "world wide web", actually pronouncing URLs as "doubleyou doubleyou doubleyou dot".

As I remember my childhood reading PC magazines and listening to my nerdy older brothers, people in general saw the internet as something amazing and new, but it was more distant than it was know. Everyone knew a couple of kids who "had the internet" and some people had e-mail, but it was not like how it's not now, with everyone using the same websites. Only nerds and yuppies used the internet, partly because you had to make your own website instead of spending five minutes setting up a profile on facebook.

Heavy Metal the magazine is a LOT more of an 80's thing, even if it was still around in the 90's.
Heavy Metal the music genre was pretty much dead by the 90's, outside of a few scandinavian underground bands.

>>Heavy Metal the music genre was pretty much dead by the 90's, outside of a few scandinavian underground bands.

The 90s saw metal turn to shit, very much culminating in Metallica bending over for a commercial producer. That's what 90's music came to, everything became an industry, everything turned to shit. The musicians who liked metal and wanted to make music not designed to print money for the record company went underground.

Older bands with established styles and legacies, like Iron Maiden or Judas Priest took a bit of a dive in the 90's after a monstrous 80's. Then revitalized all grown up in the 00's. The 90's was the death of rock music as an evolution. The development from Elvis and the Beatles, through Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, it all ends in Nirvana. Grunge is the death throes of Rock.

The cultural impact of an individual band was like a nuclear bomb in the 60's and it scales down all the way to the 90's. From Woodstock it went to what Nirvana sounded like. The spirit of the 90's teenager: "Whatever, nevermind." You could say it's the point in western culture when it's so fragmented and diverse that nothing really made a difference anymore. Money ran the music industry and youth culture.

Pogs were the cardboard discs, then tazos were pogs that had tiny slits cut into the edges so you could fit them together and build little structures. Didn't tazos come in packets of crisps or something? i think I still have a bunch of star wars tazos in a box somewhere.

I don't remember now, but I do know that the modem shriek was produced by the same internal speaker as the cold-boot beep and the "holding down the key too long" beep.
>>
>>30370058
We used to have call waiting, which would interrupt the internet and drop your connection, but if you dialled some code (*numbermumber) before you made a call, it'd disable your call waiting.
This meant that just before your modem was about to dial, you had to pick up your phone and dial the code and time it so that your modem would them call through after the code went through properly.
Too soon, and you wouldn't get the confirmation stutter pip sound, too late, and your modem would start dialling over the "please hang up, and try your call again" message.

It had a circle from the 50s-60s that was about 1000 feet from the house, then another concentric circle from the 70s-80s that was about 500 feet from the house, then a modern circle inside that that's only about 100 feet from the house.

I remember when I got my first image browser. Prior to that we only had a statewide public school network that we had to connect to to piggyback onto the Internet proper. The first year was like wandering through a maze in the dark, because so many images didn't have labels, so it was basically navigating a Windows 3.1 file tree with a lot of lag time.

Then someone passed me a bootleg floppy with a copy of Netscape Navigator and a program that would let us use it with the school network.

The next week we were all warned by our school that using a non-text-only browser on the school network was "illegal".
