90's was buzzword central, it was really a time of budding future promise, after the absurd and self-absorbed 80's.It was a time when more people talked about things like "e-mail" and "the internet" than actually used it (at least at first) and a stark divide in generations (boomers vs Gen-X and even Gen-Y to some point) could be seen in the way they approached and adopted new ideas, especially new technologies.Things in the 90's changed faster and had greater impact than I think a lot of people realized at the time. It was like a river with a strong undertoe: on the surface it looked still, but underneath there was a raging current that was not immediately apparent.When the 90's began, people were uncertain about what tomorrow might bring. When it ended, the only thing they were certain of was that tomorrow would bring something new and different.

In the 80's the economy had been incredibly good, and after a short mild recession (that still horrified people at the time) things went right back to being great. Action heroes went from grizzled badasses to witty tricksters. Anyone over 30 was seen as a greedy fuddy duddy, politics was a joke, and everything was about what was hip and cool in the now.Technology was changing rapidly, and no-one knew where it would go. Cellphones were first becoming a thing. The internet was first born, and even as a useless and primitive toy it blew our minds. Anything Japanese was inherently hightech and futuristic.

Eventually the whole dance/rave/electronica/trip hop/drum&bass thing appeared, more or less out of techno. It was the only stuff that got BETTER as the 90's went on. Goth made a comeback in a big way. D&D was totally replaced by Vampire: the Masquerade, and was played by real sexy cool people who wouldn't have been caught dead on /tg/. 80's new wave was revived almost as soon as it died, with "dark wave" being especially popular. 80's nights at night clubs were packed with goths. Goth chicks in the early 90's were in their late teens/early 20's and extremely hot. Goth chicks in the late 90's were older and much fatter, but still tried to squeeze into the same clothes. Pretty much every girl was bisexual or lesbian in the 90's.

I remember one friend in NYC who was horrified that his city was losing its "character" because there weren't constant muggings and break-ins. He hated Giuliani at the time for it. I'm serious. Much as it contrasted itself at the time with the 80's, they had a lot in common. Especially how well things were going. By the end, there was a sense that This Can't Go On Forever. Part of that was Y2K, and part was the realization that the laws of economics hadn't been repealed after all.

China and India were both doing well, but mostly producing crappy products and crappy customer support lines. Here in Australia the culture lasted for quite a while.My recollections of the 90’s aren’t exactly clear but I’ll dig up what I can. Your early morning consisted of three cartoons. A rotating variety of cartoons was the first show, the second was Dragon Ball Z or Pokemon and the third show was something you didn’t watch because you had to get to school.The most stand out thing that I can recall however is how much parodying or poking fun at things was happening all over tv and shit. Maybe this was uniquely Australian, maybe not. But it happened a lot and was generally done in good fun.The two biggest shows of the decade were Seinfeld and Friends, which basically are responsible for the modern sitcom. Most people agree that The Simpsons was at its best, but they also overrate it highly.I remember that growing up, there weren’t a lot of rules in place for anyone really, you just kind of wandered the neighbourhood looking for something fun to do, whether that was throwing rocks at cars, going to the movies or an arcade, or magically, heading to someone’s house to play Sega Megadrive (Genesis) or Super Nintendo, later followed by Nintendo 64 and Playstation 1 if they somehow possessed one of these wonder machines.Runescape came out. Even though it was released in 2001 I’d still consider it a 90’s thing. Back then it was actually cool to play this. Everyone at school was playing it, and I mean everyone. It was basically the CoD of that period. Anyone from your nerd to your sportsman was on it. At least here anyway.Clothing was jeans and denim jackets but you made sure to have band/artist names in view on your clothing so people would know you were into rap or rock or whatever.Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat occupied a good deal of people’s afternoons. And there were a whole shit ton of different street fighter editions for some reason.

In general I'd say that the 90's were much more a period of freedom and tolerance than now. People had faith in the recently founded EU. The internet was basically a lawless zone where people could post whatever they want. Laws were less strict and more forgiving in almost every aspect of life. It was a optimistic time, where we thought that the 2000's would be even better. 1997, the Asian financial crises shook us up, but we were still positive about the future. After all, the crisis happened in countries far away that were competing with us. 2001 we finally lost our hopes of a better future after 9/11 (patriot act, war on terror, beginning of police state, increasing intolerance in many aspects of life...).That said, we should also say that the early 90's were very different from the late 90's.

I remember when 3D cartoons started to come out. Reboot, Beast Wars, War Planets, and it was a major boom for children game shows from what I call. Very colorful back then too. Lots of things were tried and many things failed. MTV had music videos instead of honey booboo. Disney had Gargoyles and Warner Bros Animaniacs and Tiny Toons.
