You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force.

It's the day after the climactic Battle of Berlin. You yawn as you get out of bed, all too acutely ware of Red's empty bed next to yours. Now you had an idea of what she must have felt when you were laid up in the hospital.

The first thing to do is check your schedule, and are surprised to see you've got the day off. Guess things on the front are going better than you expected.

Yawning again, you consider your options.

>Go check on Bree. See what she was up to during the Battle.
>Go visit Red in the hospital. Maybe she's regained consciousness by now.
>Go see Anderson for further debriefing.
>Go check in on Janice and Tarin.
>Sleep in a little longer.

You decide to go check up on Red at the hospital. After all, she seriously pulled her weight during the battle last night. You never figured she'd have the chops to take down someone like Raikov in single combat. True, it looked like Raikov wasn't exactly 100% at that point, but you'd take what you could get.

You make a quick call to the hospital in order to confirm Red was awake. However, the process takes a lot longer than usual. Not surprising, given that a major battle had just concluded. You suspected literally every major hospital in Germany was packed. Finally, you get a confirmation from a very tired sounding Dr. Lindell that yes, Red had indeed woken up just a few hours ago. You request that she not say anything to Red, since you want it to be a surprise.

You get yourself cleaned up and head to the dining area for some breakfast. No cooked food today, unfortunately. Just some coffee and a plate of bagels. You grab one and wolf it down before heading for the door.

You decide to take Janice and Tarin along to see Red as well. You knew they were just as worried about her was you were. You swing by their room on the way and give it knock.

"Yes?" Janice opens the door. "Oh, hello Captain, what can we do for you?"

"Hey, Janice, I was just going to go visit Red at the hospital. Apparently she's woken up."

"That's wonderful!" Janice smiles and claps her hands together. "Tarin ,did you hear that?"

"Yeah." Tarin materializes behind Janice. "Are we going?"

"You should've seen Tarin fretting all night over her. It was just adorable." Janice chuckles.

Tarin doesn't say anything, but the piercing glare she drills into the back of Janice's head suggested that she wasn't very appreciative of this apparent betrayal of trust.

"Anyways, are you two ready to go?" You ask.

"Yes, of course!"

The three of you then exit the barracks and manage to wave down a passing M35 truck, whose driver is all too willing to give you a ride to the hospital. That was one of the perks about traveling with Janice. She ALWAYS seemed to be able to procure a ride.

The three of you sit in the bed of the truck as it rumbles off. Even with motorized transport, it was still going take a few minutes to reach the hospital.

"Heh, I never thought Tarin would be one to fret over anything." You chuckle. "Were you really that worried?"

Tarin's cheeks noticeably redden a bit as she pulls her scarf up higher to hide them.

"I kind of feel a bit responsible for it." Tarin mumbles. "I actually taught her how to fight effectively with that sword."

"You know how to use a katana?" You blink.

"I know how to use a lot of bladed weapons." Tarin shrugs. "Not a big fan of two handers, but to each their own, I guess."

"Well, in any case, you shouldn't feel bad about it. In fact, those lessons are probably what saved her life." You reassure Tarin.

"....thanks." Tarin nods a bit.

"Anyways, on to something more serious..." You sigh. "Can you two tell me in more detail what went down with that second witch in the forest?"

Janice and Tarin look at each other and then back at you.

"Well, like I said before. We were engaging her." Janice sighs. "And then she caught sight of the Pave Hawk and tried to draw a bead on it, and Tarin-"

"I can handle it." Tarin cut Janice off. "I saw the enemy witch drawing a bead on the Pave Hawk so I took her out."

"Can you be a bit more specific?" You narrow your eyes.

"In addition to the knives, I keep a garrote on me, too. Managed to sneak behind her and get it around her neck and lift her up. Thing about tank strikers, is that once you get them off the ground by the neck, all that weight acts against them."

You frown. That sounded like a pretty horrible way to go.

"You didn't give her a chance to surrender?" You ask.

"Why would I? I doubt she would've done the same thing." Tarin shrugs. "There was a problem, I took care of it."

Now you were starting to see where Tarin picked up that reputation of hers.

"For what it's worth, I think you made the right call. You did what you thought you had to save lives."

"Thanks sir, it means a lot hearing it from you." Tarin nods.

At that point, the truck finally reached its destination and rolls to a stop. Thanking the drive, you and the girls hop out of the back and enter.

The inside of the hospital is a flurry of activity, with wounded packing every square inch of free space. You see beds lined up on the sides of the hallways, and the men suffering from minor wounds sitting on the benches waiting for treatment. You weave your way through the horde of doctors, nurses, and wounded and as you journey to Red's room.

Since she was a witch, Red was privileged enough to get a recovery room reserved solely for wounded witches. Walking inside, you see Red sit up from her bed and wave enthusiastically.

"Cap!" She says with a big stupid grin on her face. "So what did you think? Did I do an awesome job or what?"

"What you did was crazy dangerous and could have gotten you killed." You scold, and you see Red literally droop. "...but, you did a good job out there, Red. You really pulled through out there. Just... try not to do it again, okay?"

"No promises. Cap." Red's smile returns. "But I'll keep that in mind."

"You'd better." You grin as you ruffle Red's hair, causing her to giggle.

"It's good to see that you're doing all right." Janice smiles. "Here's a get well present for you."

Janice then hands Red a small, cardboard box. Curious, Red opens it up and her eyes widen when she sees what's inside.

"Is this...?"

"A red velvet cupcake, guaranteed to get you back up on your feet!" Janice grins.

"And you only made one?" You frown.

"That's what I said." Tarin grumbles as well.

"Now now, I have to prioritize my targets." Janice smiles.

"Anyways, good job, Red. I guess you really did learn something from all those lessons." Tarin adds.

"Yeah, thanks for those." Red nods, taking a huge bit out of the cupcake and tingling with sensation as she does so. "Holycrapthisissogood!"

"Anyways," you laugh, "what did the doctors say about your condition?"

"Oh, just some scrapes and bruises. The biggest thing was exhausting myself by using up all my energy. They said to eat some high calorie foods and I should back in fighting shape. But, they still want to keep me here at least for another day for observation, which I think is bullshit."

>"Why would I? I doubt she would've done the same thing." Tarin shrugs. "There was a problem, I took care of it."

So, a bit of a slowpoke, but I guess this does settle once and for all that Tarin *IS* a witchkiller. Not only does she kill witches, she fucking strangles them to death.

You decide to check up on Bree. Considering she was most definitely involved in the Battle of Berlin, you wanted to see how she and her squadron had fared. Unfortunately, since you didn't have Janice with you, getting a ride back was little problematic, so you resign yourself to just walking back to the barracks.

By the time you get back, it's already close to midday. You enter the barracks and make your way to Bree's office. You also note how oddly quiet the building is. When you pass by the rec room, you see most of Bree's witches in there, watching TV and mostly tuckered out. However, by your best guess, they were all accounted for. Well, that was some good news.

You finally reach Bree's office. This time, the door is left open. You peek in and see Bree. She's definitely seen better days, as it looks like she hasn't slept for quite a while as she handles paperwork. She's so engrossed in her work, she doesn't even notice you looking in.

You're actually quite impressed. When you were younger Bree was always terribly lazy and didn't really feel compelled to apply herself. But now, she's literally working herself to the bone. You suppose that being given responsibility could really change a person.

"Hey, Bree." You say, knocking on the open door to grab her attention. "You doing alright?"

"WIILLLLLL!" Bree cries as she literally leaps over the table and tackles you with a flying hug.

"Huh, you really missed me that much?" You wheeze.

"If I did not see another human being today I was going to fucking KILL MYSELF." Bree wails, burying her head in your chest.

"Is the paperwork that bad?" You wince.

"Like you won't believe! After action reports, logistics confirmations, kill logs, pretty much everything has be written down, and a LOT of shit happened at Berlin!"

"Don't you have an XO to help you with that sort of thing?" You ask, slowly and gently pushing Bree off you so you can get back up to your feet.

"All my girls are too young to handle that sort of responsibility." She shakes her head. "Plus I don't hate any of them nearly enough to subject them to that."

"You've got a point." You nod. "So how did the battle go."

"We managed to get through unscathed, surprisingly enough." Bree sighs. "I don't know what you did, Will, but we finally got a shipment of F-15 strikers and those fucking saved our asses. With all the shit in the air at Berlin, an F-111 wouldn't have made it. Me and my girls were literally dodging MiGs all day while we were trying to hit our strike targets."

"Sounded like you had a rough time." You frown.

"It could have been worse."

"So, uh, what about that other problem, then? The up high?"

"Oh, that?" Bree rolls her eyes. "Either your CO is really well connected and got them chewed out, or what happened at Berlin really shook them up. I haven't been getting any BS from the chain of command so far."

"That's good." You nod.

"Come on, Bree. You've got to be starving. Let's get some lunch." You say, pointing your thumb at the door behind you. "My treat."

"Nah, I'm not really very hungry at all-"

A sudden and very audible growling betrays the fact that Bree had an empty stomach. You raise your eyebrow at Bree and give her a disdainful look.

"All right, fine, I guess I could use the fresh air." Bree sighed and grabbed her jacket. "I'll drive. I know the local places."

Bree then leads you out to the back of the barracks, where a humvee is parked, and she pulls a set of keys out of her pocket. Apparently, one of the perks of being a squadron leader was having your own personal vehicle. You both get and and Bree zooms off. You notice her taking the main road leading out of the base.

"The base food is crap. The local towns nearby serve better stuff." Bree explains as she waves at the checkpoint guards at the gate. They salute and open the gate without any issues. You the spend the next few minutes admiring the German countryside until Bree finally pulls into a small town. You see a lot of NATO vehicles parked on the streets as well.

"Ah damn, guess we didn't beat lunch rush." Bree sighs. "Come on."

You follow her deeper into the town, where you see a particular building packed full of soldiers eating and laughing.

"The German couple that owns this place serves American-style stuff to cater to the soldiers from the base. It's one of the more popular spots." Bree explains.

"Ah." You nod.

"Ah, Breeana, it's so nice to see you again!" An elderly German man smiles as he approaches you and your sister.

"Been too long." Bree grins. "Give me two specials, everything in them, okay?"

"Of course, of course!" The elderly German laughs and waddles off.

"That was the owner of the place. Nice guy. Used to be Luftwaffe. He actually fought in the Martian War."

"Dang." You whistle.

"Well, it's going to take a while for the food to come out. It's pretty busy today." Bree sighs.

"So," You say as you wait for the food. "have you talked to Mom or Dad lately?"

You notice Bree's expression suddenly harden, as if you stepped somewhere you shouldn't have.

"You of all people should know the answer that that question." Bree says quietly.

Ugh, you should have figured this. Bree was still bitter over her differences with Mom and Dad.

"You can't just keep running away from them, Bree." You say.

"Pffft." She rolls her eyes. "Not like they've been putting much effort to chase me."

"Okay, sorry for bringing it up." You sigh. You guess the whole family thing was still a sore spot for Bree. However, you knew you'd have to confront her about it someday. Just not today.

Finally, the food arrives, which distracts you from the current situation. Your eyes widen at the "Special". True to Bree's word, it's definitely American style. It's just a massive cheeseburger with a thick patty. However, there was a bit of German flair as there were a pair of sausages on the plate as a side order.

Now you sort of have an idea of why this place is so popular.

The next hour or so is spent just wolfing down your lunch, as well as Bree recounting stories of what she and her squadron were up to during the Battle of Berlin.

Apparently, the real stars of the show were young little Count and El. El used her signal witch powers to spoof enemy radar to great effect, and dedicated much of the battle sniping Russian ZSUs and SAM sites. Count, meanwhile, did her doggest keeping the MiGs away from her wingmate, and actually ended up with the squadron's highest kill tally for that mission with eight confirmed kills.

Bree meanwhile was just doing her job, coordinating her witches' attacks and hitting her own targets. However, the one thing she did remember the most was just being able to witness the Eagle in action. Apparently, he had indirectly saved her by shooting down a MiG on her tail, and she proceeded to watch as he singlehandedly demolished the entire Russian air force.

"It was like the guy wasn't even human." Bree says, still awed at just the memory of the sight. "His plane was pulling of maneuvers I didn't even think were possible in a steelwing. In fact, it looked like he was flying a lot like a witch."

"That's crazy." You laugh as you shake your head. "By the way, how are Count and El doing now? I haven't really had a chance to talk to them."

"Aw, they're fine." Bree laughs. "They actually got pretty close after that battle. I guess the rush of the battle really got it into them to step up their game."

"Wait... ;close?'" You blink.

"Yeah... CLOSE." Bree nods, winking as she does.

"Oh... OH." You nod in understanding. "Well, uh, good for them, I guess?"

"Ah, it's probably just a phase." Bree laughs. "They're still kids, after all."

"Whatever you say." You sigh.

"Well, I'd better be going back. That paperwork is NOT going to finish itself."

"You know, I think you could stand to make El your XO." You suggest. "She seems like she's got the smarts and the fortitude for it."

Upon entering Anderson's office, you see him at his desk, busy with more paperwork before his expression brightens when he sees you enter. You get the feeling that like Bree, he was glad to see another human being for once today.

"First of all, thanks for helping my sister out." You say, sitting down. "It really means a lot to me."

"Don't mention it. It's my job to keep people safe." Anderson chuckles.

"What did you do, anyways?" You ask.

"Oh, it was simple really. I know a few generals who are closely connect to some matrons, married to them, in fact. I just mentioned your sister's situation and it got passed up the chain. Whoever was behind the harassment apparently stopped once highly placed people started asking questions. I don't think your sister is going to get any more trouble from that end."

"Thanks a lot, sir." You grin.

"It was nothing."

"Anyways," You sigh as you segue into a less comfortable subject. "What about Gold 1?"

"Ah, him." Anderson sighs. "In any other situation, he would have been left to hang, but we've just come off the first major NATO victory in the European Theater since the war began. Nobody wants to admit one of their pilots just committed a war crime."

"So he's just going to get away with it?" You seethe.

"Not at all." Anderson shakes his. "NATO Command pressured the Luftwaffe into doing something about it. He'll be quietly transferred to Norway where he'll be escorting cargo shipments for the rest of the war."

"Nungesser actually reported in to me. She's taken him to one of the local beer halls to cool off. I can give you the address if you like."

Rather actually, if we use janice and tarin to distract Nungesser abit so we can have a solo man to man.
>>

You swing back to the barracks where you see Janice and Tarin just milling about.

"Hey, Janice, Tarin, apparently a lot of guys are going out party. You feel like joining them?" You ask.

"Hm, well, it would be rude not to." Janice smiles. "How about you, Tarin?"

"Someone's got to make sure you two don't get into trouble." She remarks.

"Wonderful!" Janice nods. "Let's go, then!"

Again, it's rather simple to grab a ride with Janice at your side. You manage to flag down another M35, which is acting as an impromptu bus to town. No sense in letting drunk military personnel drive around, after all. However, the back is too crowded and noisy to carry any sort of conversation so you just sit just chat casually with the other men until the truck reaches its destination. Hopping out of the back, you track down the beer hall Nungesser had taken Bullseye to, and you fight in quickly enough. You enter to see the place is packed with pilots, with not a single ground pounder to be seen.

"Come on, let's get a drink." You say. You figure that you could always track down Bullseye later.

You and the witches manage to find a booth to sit in. You and Janice order a couple of shots, while Tarin just goes with juice. Guess she really wasn't fond of drinking.

"You know, I think we should have a toast." Janice smiles.

"To what?" You ask.

"To victory, of course! That's what we're celebrating, right?"

"Makes sense." Tarin nods.

"Okay, to victory, then." You raise your glass. Janice and Tarin raise theirs too and you all down your drinks.

"I wish Red were here." Janice sighs. "I think she'd love to be a part of the celebrations."

"Yeah, maybe next time." You shrug.

"Oh thank goodness I found you!" You hear a familiar voice.

"Nungesser?" You blink, turning around. "Where's Bullseye?"

"I don't know!" Nungesser frowns. "He said he was going to the bathroom, but I haven't seen him in ages."

"Huh, maybe he's reacting badly to something?"

"Or he snuck out." Nungesser frowns. "I think he caught on the fact that I was keeping an eye on him."

Well, if that was true, that wasn't good. However, there was no sense in jumping to conclusions yet.

"Okay, here's what we do." You say, trying to remain calm. "Girls, you sweep the bar. See if he slipped out. I'll go check the bathroom to confirm if he's in there or not.

The witches nod and you all split up. You head to the bathroom located at the back of the building. Pushing your way through the crowd, you enter the bathroom. However, it's pretty full with plenty of drunken pilots looking to relieve themselves, meaning you have to seriously inspect everybody carefully, which was easier said than done since most of them were pissing and were not very appreciative of your staring.

Unfortunately, you can't seem to find Bullseye anywhere and are on the verge of giving up when you hear a large CRASH coming from outside. You and most of the other pilots rush out to see the commotion. However, you do NOT like what you see.

In front of you, you see Bullseye sprawled on a table, and soaking a bunch of Marine aviators in their own beer. The Marines, about four of them, stand up and glower at him until a fifth jumps in, which you recognize as Hiller.

"Whoa, hold up guys, this pilot is cool. He saved my ass last night." Hiller says, helping Bullseye back up to his feet.

The Marines' glares then turn to gaze at the men who shoved Bullseye into their table, who happened to a group of German pilots. You could see the change in the Marines' eyes, as patriotism overrode interservice rivalry.

Oh boy, this wasn't going to be good.

"Let's get those Krauts!" You hear one of the Marines yell and they dive tackle the Germans.

And that is when all hell breaks loose. Whether it was to settle old grudges, defend their comrades, or because they just thought it would be fun, literally every pilot in building joins in on the brawl.

>Why the fuck not. Join in on the fight. You need to let off some steam.

The first thing that comes to mind is trying to find your people. You carefully duck and weave your way through the melee, being careful not be dragged into any of the active fights. You manage to catch sight of Janice and Tarin. They were already near the door, in a defensive posture However, the bar patrons, drunk and rowdy as they were, were still smart and sober enough to know not to pick a fight with a witch.

However, you see Nungesser in the middle of the melee trying to force her way to Bullseye, knocking down anybody who tried to stop her. You could almost swear that she was enjoying this, judging from the look on her face.

And you think you can catch sight of Bullseye, who is currently wailing on a German pilot you can only assume is Gold 1.

Last thing we need is lose our pilot over this. If someone fingers him as the starter of all this; then yes, we will lose him.
>>
>>30251262

Because bullseye will get tried in a military court and sentenced to death / life imprisonment.

This will be a cut and dry case, not like war crimes which needs some political manoeuvring.
>>
>>30251262
Because it's not our job to revenge kill. Because it will only make things worse. Because if Bullseye kills this guy, he's in just as much trouble, we lose our pilot, and you will look like an even bigger idiot than usual for voting to help him kill this guy.
>>
>>30251188
You push your way over to Bullseye. Fortunately for you, your section of the bar mostly consists of American pilots, and their more focused on going for foreign pilots, so they largely leave you alone. However, you're almost at Bullseye when your path is cut off by a German and Polish exile.

should have realised: 'soldiers getting leave off base' meant that german servicemen would have been there too.

Seriously though, how did he identify Gold 1 from the lot? We havnt told him about the guy's future assignment yet for him to make the connection that a farewell party would mark out Gold 1 and we've no idea how he looks like.

Unless he just went spoiling for a fight with any old german.

You don't have time for this. You pick up some momentum and bowl your way through the obstacle, taking a few stray kicks and punches for the trouble. However, you finally manage to reach Bullseye, who has Gold 1 pinned and he's just wailing on him. >>

You reach out and grab Bullseye on the shoulder. He spins around, ready to attack, but stops at the last second when he realizes it's you.

"Captain?" He blinks.

You give Bullseye a hearty punch in the face.

"That's for being a dumbass!" You yell, pulling Bullseye off of Gold 1. "You've done your damage, now let's get the hell out of here!"

"But-"

"No buts, Bullseye. You want you end up court martialed? Let's GO."

You push Bullseye in the direction of the back door, which is the closest exit. However, you pause a sec and give Gold 1 a hearty kick in the gut before moving on.

And that's when you hear the sirens.

"THIS IS THE MILITARY POLICE! CEASE YOUR FIGHTING AND DISPERSE OR WE WILL RESPOND WITH FORCE." You hear a voice yell over a megaphone.

Shit, now you REALLY had to get out of here.

"Don't worry, she's a witch. They won't dare touch her." You say, continuing to push Bullseye toward the exit. "Let's go!"

Fortunately for the both of you, it seemed that the MPs hadn't completely surrounded the building, leaving the back door a viable escape route. You and Bullseye manage to make it out, and then try to look as nonchalant as possible as you pass by the MPs. Since you aren't starting any shit and don't have that many visible wounds, the MPs don't give you a second glance.

"Captain! You're all right!" Janice sighs in relief as she runs forward and hugs you. "We were so worried when we lost track of you!"

"Told you he was fine." Tarin mumbles.

"The MPs didn't give you too much trouble, did they?" You gasp as you Janice finally lets go of you.

"Not at all. They just told us go along our way. Very polite." Janice smiles.

Yeah, anybody would be polite to Janice.

"Hey, so there you guys are!" You hear Nungesser's voice as she walks up to you. You notice her hair is a frazzled mess and she has more than a few bruises.

"Jesus, Nungesser, are you all right?" You blink.

"Ah, it's nothing. It was a pretty tame bar brawl, all things considered." Nungesser laughs.

"The MPs didn't give you problems or anything?" Tarin raised an eyebrow.

"Heh, if they were French MPs, they would have busted my ass in a second." Nungesser snaps her fingers to make her point. "But your American MPs are quite easy to fool. All I had to do was act all surprised and flustered and they literally escorted me out!"

Sometimes you hated witch privilege so very much.

"Help me!" Bullseye mouths, though you just shake your head. He made his choice, now he has to live with it, though in all honesty you're finding hard time figuring why it was bad.

"Oh my, they certainly are in quite the loving relationship." Janice chuckles.

"I'm sure they are." You nod. "Come on, let's get out of here.
