You are Logan Drey, the Unchosen Void Knight.

Back on Earth you escaped certain death at the hands of a rogue AI.
Now you're a wanderer, tasked with the duty of guarding the universe itself from a threat known only as "The Corruption".

You travelled to Tattva in search of information. What you found was ruins.
Someone wrecked the place, leaving most of the buildings in blasted piles of rubble. The ones that were still intact were covered in deep scratches, and dripping with mercury.

Confused and demoralized, you and Parin return to Bray.

You still have a lot to learn. But there must be some way to save this universe…
Right?

You sit at the table, lost in thought. You’re only vaguely aware of the conversation Winnow and Parin are having across from you.

How come Tattva isn’t corrupted? You’ve narrowed it down to 2 explanations: either there were no actual gods there, or you’re missing something. Given how everything has gone so far, the latter is the more likely of the two.

There’s still simply too much that you don’t know. A lot of what you think you know about the corruption could be wrong. What if it’s something natural? What if it spreads like a virus across the Aether threads? What if Santa Claus spreads it via his magic reindeer?

It could literally be anything at this point. And that scares you.

The room is quiet all of a sudden, and you look up to see Winnow and Parin staring at you expectantly.

“So, you coming or not?” Parin asks you.

You stare at them for a moment before responding. “Coming to what?” You ask.

Parin rolls her eyes. “Told you he wasn’t listening.” She says.

“I never said he was.” Winnow replies, pouting slightly.

Meanwhile you’re still sitting here, wondering what they’re talking about. “Coming to what?” You repeat yourself.

“Festival.” Parin says, a big grin perched on her face as she looks on with bright eyes.

“Festival?” You ask.

“Festival.” Winnow says. They seem to think it’s self-explanatory.

Now we're on a quest to A: Figure out why the whole universe seems to be decaying at its roots, and B: Find a way back to where they gave us the quest.

It's easy to pick up and roll with it.

tl;dr>

MC is a cyborg human mechanic from Earth, with mantle of Void Knight thrust upon him by the former, dying, Void Knight from another realm.

Void Knight is a person charged with safeguarding of integrity of the universe itself, which is lately going to shit.

Some believe [avoid weasel words] that this is linked to a great crusade some guy has started in an attempt to wipe out all (other) gods.

Earth is overrun with Robots. This may or may not be relevant to the current crisis.

“I’m gonna need more information than that.” You say.

Parin looks at you like you just grew a second and third nose. “What more information could you possibly need?!? It’s a festival, and you’re invited!” She says with a big smile.

“What kind of festival?” You ask.

“We hold it every year or so. We play music and we dance to bolster the spirits so that they might favor us when we require them.” Winnow explains.

“Why am I being invited?” You ask, eyeing them warily.

They get quiet for a moment, before Winnow speaks again. “Logan… when was the last time you had a break?” She asks, looking a bit… worried?

You shrug. “Well, I was in a coma for the last three days. Does that count?” You say with a bit of sarcasm. It doesn’t seem to go over well. Winnow looks a bit uncomfortable, and Parin glares at you.

And then Parin smiles, hops up, and grabs your hand. “That settles it! You’re coming with us!” She declares.

“Don’t I get a say in this?” You ask.

“Nope!” She tells you with a smile before skipping away. “I’m gonna go wash up. When I’m done, you’re next!” And then she’s gone before you can say anything.

You sigh in defeat. “You mind if I take a look at my limbs?” You ask Winnow. You’re pretty sure she won’t, but it’s always nice to ask.

“Take a look at your limbs?” She cocks her head to one side in confusion.

In response, you unplug your left leg and hold it up in front of you. “Limbs.” You say.

Her eyes go wide with shock. “O-oh! Right, I remember seeing that when we were fixing you up. Go ahead.” She says. You put your leg on the table and pull out your tools. “Why do you need to take it off?” She asks, leaning on the table.

“They wear, they tear. Sometimes even slight defects can mess up the whole thing. Normally I wouldn’t have to do it as often as I have, but I don’t have replacement parts on me so I have to be extra careful right now.” You say as you start working from the foot. “So what can I expect to see at this festival?”

“Not a whole lot. It’s mostly just the different singer and dancers getting together and performing. Then at the end of the night there’s a big bonfire and everyone dances.”

You wince a bit. “Everyone… does that include me?”

“Well yes, of course it does.” Winnow replies, looking mildly confused. “Why do you ask?”

You tap your wrench on the foot of your left leg, which is still on the table. “As elegant and dainty as these look, they were built with combat in mind. Even if they weren’t I’m not the best of dancers, even if I did have a pair of dancer’s legs.” You say.

Winnow giggles. “I’m sure you’ll do just fine. The festival dances are all fairly simple and I’m certain that Parin would be willing to show you the steps, if you asked nicely.” She says with a slight smile.

It’s starting to sound like you’ll get dragged into this kicking and screaming if you say no. But you suppose there are worse ways to relax than to spend a day with two pretty ladies, even if they are both aliens. “So, mercury. I don’t know if Parin told you, but we found it in abundance on Tattva. You wouldn’t happen to know if there’s any significance to that, would you?”

“Mercury… the poison? No, Parin didn’t mention that. That is strange though…” She says.

You finish up with your left leg, making sure ALL the parts are back in before putting it back on and taking off your right leg. You’re about to start your check when something occurs to you. “Mercury is poisonous to your people too?”

“Well… yes.” She says. “Do you think that’s important?”

“It could be…” You say, popping open the covers on your ankle joint. It’s a hunch, but it’s something. You’ll have to ask Parin if it’s the same for her when she gets out.

“So how long have you and Parin known each other?” You ask Winnow idly.

“A little while now. When she was younger her brother used to take her to other worlds, I met her when she visited here with him. She came a few times after that, but I hadn’t seen her for a while. Until a couple weeks ago, she showed up in full armor talking about how she was on her way to becoming a Way Knight.” She says with a happy expression. “She seemed really excited, but a little miffed that she couldn’t find her brother.”

“Well, we know the reason for that now…” You say as you plug your right leg back in. It’s a bit odd hearing about how normal Zeshua might’ve been at one point, considering how crazy he is now.

“What do you think he’ll do?” Winnow asks you.

“Hmm?” You look up from your leg, not having expected another question.

“What do you think Zeshua will do… when… you know…” She has trouble with the last bit, but you’re pretty sure you catch her drift.

“I honestly don’t know. I don’t think she can convince him to stop attacking me, but I also don’t think he’d go so far as to hurt her to get to me.” You say, keeping the worst case scenario to yourself. “Either way, I’ll be on guard. I don’t intend to let him get the best of me again.” You say, leaving the implications of that hanging in the air.

No sooner are you off that topic, than Parin comes back in. Wearing a towel, apparently fresh out of a bath. “Your turn!” She says as she grabs your left arm to pull you to your feet.

Right after you disengaged the locks so you could check on it.

arm and legs
>>
Your arm comes right off and Parin falls over backwards with it, a comically shocked expression on her face.

You move quickly, grabbing your arm with your right hand. You then pull it firmly back into its socket and hold it there.

Your arm now back in place, you look over at Parin. “You okay?” You ask.

“uhhhhhh…” She looks weird. Her cheeks have turned pretty blue, and her eyes are wide open. That’s when you notice the sensory info coming from your left hand, giving you a signal akin to ‘hey there’s something soft here’.

You look down at where your hand is, and notice that she’s pulled it into her chest. “Oh, that’s what it’s sens-“ You stop mid-sentence and step back, reflexively releasing both hands.

Your left arm stays in Parins hands. Shit, you must’ve forgotten to lock it. You all stand there in silence for a second, before Parin shouts. “Youneedtogowashyourselfrightnowcomeonletsgo!” She pushes you with your own arm all the way into the bathroom and slams the door behind you.

“Can I at least have my arm back?” You call through the door.

“Absolutelynot!” You hear from the other side.

Oh well. You can’t take it in there with you anyway, same with your legs. They’re resistant enough to withstand rain and the occasional drenching, but it’s a good idea to avoid submerging them when you can. Luckily, the sockets are water-proof when the limbs are out.

“Just don’t break it okay?”

You don’t hear a response, but that’s fine. It’s a sturdy arm, it can take whatever Parin can throw at it. You hope…

With a sigh, you take the KV off your back and set it on the floor. Then you set about removing your clothes, a job made easier by the fact that your oversized left shoulder isn’t in the way. You then take off your legs and maneuver yourself into the bathtub.

It isn’t a graceful or even a dignified maneuver, so you’re incredibly glad no one is around to see it.

It’s moments like these, when the limbs are off and you can really see yourself that it dawns on you: this is all you are, half a man with half a face and half a brain. Thinking about it makes you laugh.

It’s been quite a while since you last bathed like this. The last thing that even classifies as ‘washing’ was the cold shower you took at the base what… a week ago? It feels like it’s been years…

You let out a long yawn, the warm water seems to be making you sleepy.

“Best not.” You say to the empty bathroom. Instead, you lever yourself up and look around.

<Is there anything here that qualifies as soap?
>Scanning…

Winnow has… a lot of different things around here. It looks the way a girl’s bathtub might look back on earth. You chuckle a bit at that. “I suppose some things might be universal.” You mumble.

It isn’t long before Vicky identifies the different things around you. Satisfied that you have something that cleans the body, you get to business. It doesn’t take you very long to finish, as you don’t have a whole lot to clean. Once you’re done, you do a practiced roll to get out over the edge. Once again it’s lacking in dignity, more of a flop than anything else.

Unable to find a towel you settle for your not-flak-vest, since you don’t really care if it gets wet. You quickly dry yourself off and put your legs back on before re-dressing yourself and running your hands through your hair to make it look somewhat presentable.

Then you exit the bathroom, turn the corner and find Winnow and Parin sitting there.

“You bet!” You say, offering your right hand to Parin.

She smiles a bit as she takes it, using it to get to her feet before hooking her arm over yours.
Before you can say anything, Winnow has the other arm and out the door you go.

You’re surprised to see how high up you are when you get outside. “Is this a treehouse?” You ask Winnow.

Her head perks up. “I guess you wouldn’t have seen it. Yes, we live up here.” She says, before she brings a hand to her face. “Do you have any way to get down there?” She asks.

“Of course he does!” Parin says. “He’s got us!” She takes out a calling crystal and cracks it in half, and you get what she means.

Following her lead, you crack one of your own and hand it to Winnow. Then you take the one Parin hands you. “We’ll see you down there!” Parin says as she whips out her sword and cuts a rift in one fluid motion. And then she’s gone.

Winnow just hops off, spreading her wings and gracefully soaring down.

>Message received from Parin.
>Would you like to play it?
<No, just open a connection.
>Affirmative.

Your shield glows, and you slice open the air in front of you. Just like on Tattva, it’s in one side and out the other.

>[1/?]
>>
You come out on the ground, with the sound of distant music in the background. The trees around you are huge, and above you can see more tree houses like the one you were just in. The vegetation is a familiar green colour. In fact, this entire forest looks like the ones on Earth.

“Welcome!” Parin shouts once you’re out of the rift. “Did you get my message?” She asks

“I didn’t bother playing it. Why?” You say. It didn’t seem all that important.

She smiles bashfully. “No reason.” Then she turns around and skips off. “It’s this way, come on!”
You and Winnow look at each other for a moment, then take off after her.

The festival itself is interesting. Lots of people like Winnow are there, which makes perfect sense. It seems as though they all have different coloured feathers, making the view over their heads an interesting one. You say ‘over their heads’ because they are all quite short. A few of them cast sidelong glances at you, you don’t mind though. You are the outsider after all.

The music is wonderful, and each song seems to invoke a different combination of spirits. Every one of the Veeka (you asked Vicky what they were called) seems to have a different song, some play instruments, some sing, some even dance. The performances continue until the sun has gone down. It feels like all of the Veeka took a turn on the rudimentary wooden stage, including Winnow.

The final performance of the night came from a Veeka playing what seemed to be a guiter, playing a riff that would probably make metal fans back on your world cry. When he finished, his purpose became obvious as a big pile of wood behind the stage caught fire. “Now the dancing starts!” Parin says.

She’s looking at you expectantly.

You look for some excuse in your head. Maybe your leg feels off, maybe someone is calling you, maybe you have to go help Santa Claus save Christmas.

And she just looks at you, smiling the whole time.

Eventually you crack, smiling back and offering her your arm. She takes it, and leads you off to the bonfire.

The musicians seem to have all started playing together now, the sound they all produce is very chaotic. Chaotic, but still good. As Parin leads you up, you observe the other dancers. The steps seem simple enough, and once you’re there it doesn’t take you long to fall into the rhythm.

The song changes a few times, and the dances seem to all have minor variations. You don’t mind, though. And neither does Parin it seems, as she twirls and steps with a happy smile. It’s easy to get caught up in that attitude, and before you know it you’re having fun.

When was the last time you did that?

While you were lost in your own head, the song seems to have slowed down. The Veeka around you all seem to have paired off and are now… slowdancing?

You’re about to ask Parin if she wants to keep dancing when she moves in closer, wrapping both hands behind your back. You’re caught a bit off guard at first. But your head kicks into gear momentarily, and you return the semi-embrace. Like this, the two of you sway to the slow music.
It seems to trail on endlessly, but you don’t mind. Not one bit.
It feels like forever since you’ve been this close with a girl. Not since…

Since…

You shake your head, that’s an unproductive thought if you ever heard one. You focus all of your attention on the here and now. ‘Live for the moment’ Derek used to say. You’d never met a man so good at looking cool and making an ass out of himself all at once.

You squeeze your eyes shut. Living for the moment, remember?

When you open your eyes, you notice Parin looking up at you from your chest. “What’s wrong?”

You smile at her. “Nothing, just some interesting memories coming up at inopportune times.” You say.

She looks confused for a moment. “Memories of home?” She asks.

“Yeah, is it that obvious?” You ask.

“Kind of” she says with a gentle smile. “You don’t seem to let a lot show on your face, but when you do it really stands out.” You can see her hand stroking your left cheek, but you can’t feel it.

“I guess I do have my tells after all.” You say.

Parin tilts her head slightly. She is… being fairly obvious herself.

Do I…

Do it gently though, and in a way that tells her that we're still interested. We're just not ready.

Man, it's been like... 2 weeks or something since we MURDERED OUR LAST GIRLFRIEND WITH OUR OWN HANDS. I think taking it slow is perfectly justifiable.

Live in the moment, right?

The past is the past. You push earth and Derek and Hannah and that damned AI right out of your head. You can deal with those later when you have the ability.

You push your head towards hers, meeting her lips with your own.

She moans a bit, surprised by your sudden initiative. But then she drapes her arms over your neck and pulls you closer.

You suppose living in the moment could work out.
You can only hope that the moments to come will all be as good as this one.

An armored figure leans back in his chair, seated before some intricate console. He is in a large chamber with great windows spanning across from side to side, offering a view into the beyond. He stargazes as an aetherian thread stretches out before his eyes. The walls are stone, sand clinging to them like they had been unearthed from a desert. Two others are with him. One stands beyond the console operating some compass-like device, the other is to the right side of his seat, arms crossed behind his back.

“You’re certain, Leohrad?” The seated figure asked calmly.

“I’m sure of it,” the one to his side answers. He has a fair appearance, and pale skin. He too is armored. It looks elegant, very well tailored to its wearer, and has a rusty color. His hands, from his fingertips to his forearm, are covered in bronze crystal. His hair, shoulder length and sandy blonde is dotted with small flecks of the same crystal on his hands. He also has two large protrusions of the same substance coming from his back, like twin fins, giving off a light hum.

Leohrad spoke again, “They are arranging for the summit to take place on Aklabra.”
>>
“Their homeworld?” the seated one asks, “Dangerous, considering who they’re dealing with.” He chuckled a little, “It sounds like they’re attempting to make Kalki their guard dog.” The seated one wore full bronze armor of far greater craftsmanship then the one next to him, intricate designs playing across it. He did not share his companions’ constitution, though the origin of both sets looked similar. His eyes were constantly leaking energy from behind his visor.
“Ludicrous, I know,” Leohrad responded, “But, if the Kalkarri had access to their portal network... well, you already know what their Lord is capable of, Monthei.” The bronze one sighed.

“I know,” he says reassuringly, “I won’t let that black monster get the upper hand.” He hung his head a little, “It’s a shame about the Runecasters...” He sighs, “By some miracle, they have no gods on their world. Their discoveries and achievements are a true testament to what mortals can do on their own.” Monthei stands from his seat, “If Kalki is there then we have a chance to destroy him once and for all.” He said with grim determination, “Do not engage the Aklabrans, if you can help it. But if they involve themselves, show no quarter. We may never get an opportunity like this again.”
Leohrad spoke, “I’ll make the arrangements and talk to our allies.” He turns to leave, “You know, If Kalki is there... you know Rasa WILL accompany you. There will be no avoiding it.”

“After what Kalki’s ilk did to him?” Monthei responds, “He shares much in common with the Dark Priests. I did not rob them of their vengeance, and I will not rob Rasa of his.”

>Logan's face when

Nevertheless, Parin saved his life, he kinda owes it to her to try and not kill her brother.
>>
>>30232454
Oh I know that, I don't really expect it to turn into anything, especially since Parin has that thing for Jax. I think it is a case of Logan and Parin getting caught up in the atmosphere.

Hopefully we can navigate the aftermath maturely enough not to make things awkward with Parin.
