You are Logan Drey, the Unchosen Void Knight.

Back on Earth you escaped certain death at the hands of a rogue AI.
Now you're a wanderer, tasked with the duty of guarding the universe itself from a threat known only as "The Corruption".

While checking out a corrupted world you ran into Zeshua, and were forced to flee in order to escape certain death.
Waking up three days later you were greeted by a bird-girl named Winnow, who healed you with her singing.
You find out after that you were brought to her by Parin, Zeshua's younger sister, who found you lying near dead when she sensed that someone entered the world she was on.
Now Parin has decided to travel with you in the hopes that she'll meet her brother, and you hope she can convince him to stop trying to kill you.

Now you find yourself on Tattva, the ruined home planet of Kalki, Lord of the Kalkarri.

Your task is starting to seem daunting.
But you'll see this through, no matter what.

“So this is Tattva, huh?” You muse. According to Vicky, Oz had this world marked as unknown in his book. The only notes he had on it were that it seemed ‘hostile’ and it had a very strong connection to the Aether.

“Did you say Tattva? Is that where we are?” Parin asks. For a moment you almost forgot she was here, you’re sort of used to doing this bit alone.

“Yeah, Vi- err… I had a hunch as to where it might be. Turns out I was right.” You say, careful not to mention Vicky. As helpful as she is, it would not be wise to tout the fact that you have another person in your head that tells you to go places. Lest you wind up sounding crazy-… er.

“Wow.” She exclaims, looking around in awe. “I’d heard stories of this place, though I didn’t think it actually existed.” Her eyes lock onto what appears to be some ruins in the distance, and she stares at them hungrily.

“Spotted those too eh?” You say, walking over next to her. Parin looks at you excitedly and nods. “We should probably go check them out, might give some insight into what happened here.”

Parin says nothing. She just looks at you with big, bright eyes.

“Lead the way.” You say. And with that, Parin takes your hand and off you go.

The two of you keep up a good pace. It’s been a while since you’ve given your legs some real work to do, so the run is kind of refreshing. Although you can’t seem to shake the feeling that you aren’t welcome here…

The earth around you is blasted and scorched, and in some places it’s still burning. The fires don’t let off any smoke, but they seem… angry. They don’t move but it looks like they want to burn you, as they seem to blow in your direction no matter what way the wind is going.

Coming out of the ruins in the distance there are huge cracks in the ground. The ruins themselves seem out of place because of this, almost like they weren’t built here.

In fact, it looks like they may have crashed.

“Dang, that’s quite a ways up…” Parin states disappointedly. These ruins definitely crashed here, and what remains of the land they were on rises a good 10 stories above you. It looks climbable, but there could be other ways in.

>[ ] Climb

>[ ] Look for another way in

Look for most monumental buildings, as those could be government, schools or religious, and we might have interest in all of the above.

“Come on, we’ll have to find another way around.” You say. You could probably make it up there with some effort, but it wouldn’t be easy. The climbing face is fairly smooth, and without real feeling in your left hand it’d be very difficult to scale.

“I think I saw something over this way on the way over here, it’s worth checking.” Says Parin, motioning for you to follow her.

It takes a few minutes of jogging, but it looks like Parin was right. Above you there looks to be stairs carved into the wall. It’s still above you, but it’s low enough to jump to.

With a bit of a heave, you jump for it. You feel your right hand catch the ledge. From the fingers on your left hand you get more of a ‘hey you’re touching a hard surface!’ sort of notice. You grunt a bit as you pull yourself up, but that’s the only sound. No creaks or groans, which you’re always listening for.

Once you’re up, you reach down and help Parin up as well. “Thank you!” She says, doing a slight curtsy once she’s on her feet. “So… where to now?”

>Anything in particular you guys wanna look for?

Up the stairs you go! “Keep an eye out for…” You pause, you’re not entirely certain what you’re looking for actually. “Anything suspicious, I suppose.” That should work.

Parin giggles. “Aye captain.” She says with a salute.

At the top of the stairs you find a small town. Well, it may once have been a small town. You’re not quite sure how people wage war out here. But from what you’re seeing it looks pretty similar to how you waged it back home. Some of the buildings seem to be intact, but most of them are blasted piles of rubble. Even the ones that are intact either have chunks missing or big gouges cut into the side.

The wind seems to pick up as you walk, howling through the ruins with an angry persistence. It feels the same way that the fires did, like it doesn’t want you here. You’re about to mention this to Parin when you feel a nip on your arm.

“Ow!” You hear Parin exclaim. “What was that?” She asks, rubbing her cheek.

“I don’t think this place likes us.” You tell her. It seems like it ‘bit’ her as well.

“I get that feeling too…” She says, looking a little squeamish.

“I don’t think we’ll be finding much here, let’s head back to the stairs.” You say. After getting confirmation from Parin, you both head back.

Back at the stairs, you start climbing back down when Parin notices something. “Think we might find something over there?” She asks. You look to where she’s pointing, and see a larger city in the distance.

It looks ruined like this one, but it was definitely more important.

This. She said if we've visited a place on a planet we can warp right to it. Maybe she can extrapolate the precise spatial coordinates via rangefinding and... computery shit... and warp us to the city.

“In for a penny, in for a pound I suppose.” You say. Starting to make your way down the stairs, you don’t hear Parin following. “You comin’?” You ask.

“What does that mean?” She asks you, tilting her head curiously.

“That saying? Basically, it means: If you’re going to do something, do it all the way.” You tell her. That’s what your dad said anyway, you don’t even know what a penny is. “you coming or n-ow!” you feel the wind bite you again. “Damnit.”

<I don’t suppose there’s a faster way off this rock, is there?
>There is always a faster way. It depends on where you intend to go.

“I have an idea.” You say.

<Can I get a marker where we came in?

A small mark shows up in your vision, down on the ground a few hundred meters away. You do some quick mental mapping, and then punch in the coordinates for this planet.

“What are we doing?” Parim asks.

“Getting us off of this town full of angry, invisible bees.” You say as you offer her your hand.

She cocks her head as she takes your hand. “Bees?”

You laugh. “I’ll explain later.” You tell her. Then you cut a rift and jump in…

… And back out the other side.

<That was… incredibly quick.
>There was no void to be crossed, as such the transmission did not take long.

You’ll have to remember that one… But for now you get your bearings again using the angles you figured from the cliff, and start walking.

“Right, so… Bees.” You say as the two of you start walking. “They’re a type of insect we had back home. They made this delicious stuff called honey, but if you ever messed with one it’d sting you. It would hurt enough to teach you not to mess with them, but the bee that stung you would die in the process.” You say, stopping there lest you risk sounding like a biology teacher.

“The animals are like that where you come from?” She asks.

“Just these ones, we used to farm them for a long time. Until they all died out 20 years ago.” You say. Truth is that there’s probably not a whole lot of animal life left on earth. When the AI went rogue species were already dropping off left and right. You hate to think what its stance on wildlife is.

Parin is quiet for a moment. “So is everyone there like… like you?” She says, looking on nervously. Like you’d somehow be mad at her for asking you that. “Y’know… no magic and all.”

“No clue.” You respond. “As far as I knew back then, magic existed in old fairy tales and fantasy. For all I know, I could be the exception rather than the rule.” You finish, you’d never really thought about how other humans might fair out here. “How do you know about that anyways?”

“I heard about it from one of the other trainees that I crossed paths with. He told me the Void Knight couldn’t channel Aether, I figured he was kidding. That was until I tried to heal you…”

“And it didn’t work. Jax tried the same thing, with the same result.”

“You know Jax?” She seems surprised.

“I ran into him a few days ago while I was checking out the Corruption. Why do you ask?”

“No reason…” She says, looking away.

That’s a bit of a strange reaction…

“Okay, that was weird.” You say, eyeing Parin suspiciously.

She tenses up for a moment, before laughing nervously. “Haha… ha… What was weird Logan?”

“That. That was weird. What’s up?” You ask.

She looks like she’s about to dodge the question for a moment, before thinking better of it and letting out a long sigh. “Fine, I suppose it does concern you now after all…” She straightens up before continuing “it’s politics.” She says.

“Politics” You echo. “I suppose there’s no escaping them no matter where you go… So what’s it all about?” You ask.

“Back in the crossroads, well you probably know this… but there are two camps: the purists and the Neos. The purists are all the old families that used to make up the Wayknights, until their numbers started to dwindle and they had to start recruiting from outside the families. Those new recruits are the Neos.” She explains, sounding almost like a history professor.

“I knew about the purists, those are the guys who want me dead, right?”

“Not entirely. Nosim is from one of the old families, though he’s always been a bit… wonky. It was his idea to allow those outside the families to join. Before then, Jax was one of the guards in our household…” She trails off.

“I think I get it, so a lot of the people who used to serve the Way Knight families became Way Knights themselves.” You say, stroking your not-beard.

She nods solemnly “Zeshua and a lot of others hated the fact that they had to serve alongside the people who used to serve them.”

“And you?” You ask, sensing the purposeful lack of opinion there.

Parin perks up. “What, m-me?” She stops walking and points to herself.

“Yes you, how do you feel about all this? You obviously aren’t a textbook purist, since you don’t hate my guts for having this thing-“ you point to the shield on your back “-so you probably don’t feel the same way your brother does.”

She stalls a bit, nervously twirling her hair before answering you. “I-… I was kind of… happy… I guess… Father and Zesh used to treat the people who served us like dirt… When they changed the rules for recruitment, a lot of them joined the Way Knights. They were all good people, I guess it was nice seeing them do something worthwhile.” She finishes, her green face turning a little blue in the cheeks.

“Why so blue, chum?” You ask.

“B-blue? I-I-I-I Don’t know what you’re talking about!” She squeaks a bit as she says that, hiding her face in her hands.

“No your face is definitely turni-“ You stop. “Don’t Hecatun have blue blood?” You ask.

“Y-yeah…” She answers

That explains so very, very much. And now you scramble for a subject to change this to. “Ssssssoooo I don’t suppose you could tell me how many of these families there are, could you?” You say in an ‘I am changing this subject before things get awkward’ sort of way.

Parin takes a moment to cool down before answering. “There are eleven, one for each of the worlds you can reach from the crossroads.” She says, still a little blue in the face.

“You can only reach eleven worlds from the crossroads?” You ask. You hadn’t thought of how people get to and from that place, since you couldn’t find it through your means.

“Yes, you can go to the crossroads from anywhere. But when you leave there’s only 11 different destinations, Palia being one of them.” She says.

“Hang on, how do you know I’ve been to Palia?” You ask, you’re pretty sure you never told her about that.

She waves dismissively. “Nosim sent you out, right? Palia is their connective world. That family used to cover it and most of the planets you could get to along that line.” She says, looking rather happy that her guess was right.

“What are the other worlds anyway?”

“Well, other than Palia… My family covers Dergrume. Then there’s Tophir, Rezen, Moreen, Ulthuv, Deneri, Ebb, Yashino, Gofein, and Tarune.” She lists them off on her fingers, clapping her hands together and smiling when she finishes.

“Hang on, your family covers Dergrume?” You ask.

“Yes. You’ve been there?”

“I have, I made a few friends there. It’s also the first place I encountered your brother outside the crossroads.” You say. You dispatched him with ease that time, was he really just underestimating you?

“Oh…” Palin’s head hangs, the subject of Zeshua’s activities does not seem to be a happy one.

“But nevermind that, it seems as though we’re here.” You say. The city seems to have snuck up on you while you weren’t paying attention.

>[1/2]

>>30181517
The city is much larger than it looked from afar. Up close, you can see how very beautiful it is.
All the buildings seem to be made out of marble, each one seemingly sculpted from a single huge block. The buildings themselves look like temples, with large marble spires dotting the skyline. In the distance, on the other side of the city you can see a building that towers over all the others.

You get an eerie feeling. There’s no one here, just like with the other town. You see obvious signs of a battle here as well.

“Come on, let’s see what we can find.” You say, drawing the KV out of caution. The weapon still seems to be loaded with Apotropeia, you didn’t really get a chance to use any of it against Zeshua.

You and Parin walk at a good pace through the city. It’s damage in a similar fashion to the other one, but somehow not the same…

The buildings here are covered in deep scratches, like someone let a giant tiger with metal claws loose in the place or something. But that’s not all, you can see some sort of… liquid running down from some of the scratches…

>Examine?

You approach the scratches in the wall. “The hell is that stuff?” You say.

<Scan this stuff, it looks almost… familiar.
>Scanning…

While that’s going, you touch it with your left index finger. You get sensory info telling you that it is liquid, and somewhat cool. You could’ve said that, but looking closely it almost looks like…

>Scan complete!
>The liquid appears to be Mercury.

“Mercury?” You mumble. “What the hell is mercury doing here?”

“You should be careful!” Parim exclaims behind you. “That stuff is poisonous!”

“Relax, I’m not going to eat it. Why is there mercury dripping from these claw marks anyway?”

“I’m not sure… I haven’t heard of anything that might have caused this.”

“Regardless. If there aren’t any answers here, we’ll have to hope that we can find some further in.” You say, stepping away from the damaged wall and continuing towards the large building in the distance.

>[1/?]
>>
A little ways further in, you come across a sizeable crater in the middle of the street you’ve been walking along.

“I don’t suppose you see any way around this, do you?” You ask Parim.

“Doesn’t look like it. It’s not that deep though, come on!” She says, hopping into the crater and gracefully sliding down the side.

Yeah, it doesn’t look that steep…
You follow Parim down the side. Though you lack the grace she exhibited, you make it down in one piece none the less.

You half expected for there to be a little puddle of mercury in the bottom, and were a little disappointed that there wasn’t. Instead there appears to be footprints. Deep footprints. “The hell? Was this crater… was this crater caused by a person?” You say aloud.

The footprints appear to be the origin point of the crater, with another pair just off to the side of where the first two are. “Talk about making an entrance. I’ll bet the entire city heard whatever made these…”

There doesn’t seem to be anything more to learn here though, so you and Parim climb up the other edge of the crater and continue on.

The rest of the way to the large building doesn’t take long. But the silence is tangible. The scratches seem to become more frequent the closer you get, until some of the gashes actually go through the walls of the buildings.

The doors to the large building are made of the same marble as the rest of the city, and they’ve clearly been blasted open.

You make a quick 360 check to make sure no one is watching you before turning to Parin. “Be on guard, we have no way of knowing if what did this is still here or not.” You say.

Parin draws her sword, a long rapier-like weapon similar to the one Zeshua uses, before nodding to you.

You lead the way in, moving quietly and cautiously. Before you is a wall covered in strange, intricate symbols. The wall leads into a hallway to your right, and the left has been blocked off. Looking down the hallway, it seems to curve as it runs down. With nowhere else to go, you go down the hallway.

Once you’ve entered the hallway, you can see that the symbols are on either side. These tablets seem to have been spared from the wrath of whatever attacked this place. You’re unsure of what the symbols mean, and scanning them came up blank. Parin doesn’t seem to know what they mean either.

As you get deeper in, the ground seems to start ramping upward. The incline isn’t incredibly steep, but it’s noticeable. You’re fine with it, as you don’t have legs that get tired, but Parin’s breath has sped up noticeably. “You alright?” You ask.

She waves you off. “I’ve walked through worse, don’t worry about me.”

The walk to this place may not have seemed long, but you’re in the spiral for about 30 minutes before you finally reach the central room.

“I don’t have legs…” You say, moving to examine the room.

This place, unlike the rest of this building, was not spared. There’s a large black obelisk in the center of the room, well… what’s left of it anyway. It’s so badly damaged that you’re surprised it’s still standing. Out of every single in the obelisk you can see a slight drip of mercury, to the point where it’s coalesced in a small pool around the base. It looks like it may have had markings at some point, but they’ve been all but obliterated by whatever did this.

“Seriously? What are those then?” Parim asks.

“Replacements, I lost the real ones when I was young; same with the arm.” You reply, prompting Vicky to scan the obelisk as you do so.

“You mean that isn’t armor? Is that even possible?” She says, looking closely at your arm.

You roll your eyes, reaching your left hand out to her. “Take it, and hold on tight.” You say. You then disengage the locks and walk away, leaving the arm in Parim’s hands.

She fumbles with her mouth for a second, getting the first syllable of about a dozen different words out for a second before finally saying something coherent. “That’s… really weird.”

“You looked like you could use a hand.” You say. “I will need that back eventually, though. In case I need to arm myself.” You look at her with a raised eyebrow and a smirk.

Parim giggles a bit before bursting out laughing. “Here.” She says through her laughter, handing you the arm.

You sheathe your weapon and re-attach it. “If you liked that, wait ‘till I get to my legs. I’ve got some good ones there.” You say. The scan you had Vicky do comes up. The tablet is made of obsidian, the liquid is more mercury. Pretty much nothing important, whatever destroyed this place seems to be long gone.

I'm not sure if hauling those things around is a good idea, but make sure to examine the tablets closely and tell Vicky to save the image, maybe even make a 3d model for later reference.

Maybe the machine people have a wireless (3d) printer

just make sure to photograph all the writing. Maybe some scholars can help with deciphering it later

Dizzy you're a fuckin' goldmine of these.

Sounds like a good idea. Is there anything else in the room? Any remains of anything?

If this is where many gods died, is there a thinning of the aether? Wouldn't it be affected?

Where's the mercury from? Is it from inside of the walls? This is weird. And I doubt it would be normal before whatever turned this place into a desert.

Did Vicky recognize the footprint earlier? I guess not, but never hurts to be sure...

Where are we within the building? Near the roof?

Is there anything else remarkable in the room?

What sort of damage is on the obelisk? Incision? Talon marks? Impact craters?

Ooh, these are good questions. I second these.
>>
You look seriously at the broken obelisk, closely examining the dozens of deep scratch marks that have wrecked its surface. “I don’t get it.” You say.

Parim stops laughing, finally. “Don’t get what?”

“When a god is killed it’s supposed to have a bad effect on the Aether. From what I’ve learned, that’s what is causing the Corruption. But according to Fio and Vrill, this place had tons of gods. And Monthei killed all but one.” You explain, biting you thumb in concentration.

“I’m not following you…” Parim says, laughing nervously.

You let out a long, exasperated sigh. “Where is the Corruption?” You say, throwing your hands out to either side. “For that matter, where did all the mercury come from? What the hell made those footprints in the crater? What do all these symbols mean? Why were they the only thing in this whole place that didn’t get touched?” You muss up your hair in frustration.

“In other words…” She trails off, looking downtrodden.

“Yeah. In other words, we came here for answers…” You say, prompting Vicky for another set of coordinates. “We came here for answers, and all we’re leaving with is more questions.”
