Char Sheet : Next Post

You are Whitefang, the Terrible, a great wolf. Your pack is still recovering from an attack by the local humans, one that was brought out by the wishes of a homunculus as she calls herself. The female wolf who had saved you when you thought you were dead was separated from the pack and slaughtered by Caecilia, the Beautiful. You, Schatten, the two sisters, and the homunculus escaped from the villa and back into Nadel’s woods.

Against the odds, you even managed to escape the wrath o the nightmare thanks to the homunculus’s help. This gave you time to rest and recover, but fire is sweeping the forest beneath you now. The horde of humans that invaded your original territory are now running through Nadel’s woods, spreading fire everywhere along the road and river in a great burning cross. Nadel is screaming.

“They’re going to kill Nadel, who are these humans?” the homunculus asks as you look down on the destruction.

>”What does it matter? This is not our problem.”
>”They come from beyond the mountains, and they seem to like killing creatures such as Nadel and myself.”
>”Aren’t you supposed to know?”
>”Let’s find out.”

“They come from beyond the mountains and seem to have a liking for killing beings such as us and Nadel,” you respond. Sulferous smoke is filling the dawn. Nadel had been gaining strength during the night, so this may be a time of weakness.

“The hill tribes? That can’t be right, they would worship us as gods,” the homunculus responds as she dances her shadow along the cliff.

“Well that’s where they came from, my territory was the pass they used.”

“I cannot believe this, I will have to get a closer look at these humans to know for certain, you are going down there, aren’t you?” she asks.

“Why should I?” you ask, turning your blazing eyes to her.

“Setting aside that this is my home, do you not desire power? Your legend spark is fading rapidly and may vanish forever if you do not ignite it soon.” You still don’t’ quite understand the intricacies of inflection and tone, but she seems frustrated, or perhaps scared.

“Fine, I shall descend, Schatten should join me though. It may get dangerous. You have to show me the way though,” you respond as you pace back to the den.

“I hate telepathy,” the homunculus complains as she stretches out from your shadow to envelop your pack. Schatten’s already awake, his nose twitching. “Hmm, is this Hasdrubal’s pack?”

“It is likely so, why?” you respond, tilting your head to the side. A moment later Schatten’s teeth bare and he snarls as he gets to his feet.

“No reason,” the homunculus responds as she dances back over to you. Schatten walks past you as you watch the sisters to make sure they aren’t going to follow you. Then the two of you start walking back down to Nadel’s forest. “You want to ignite your spark, right?”

“That has tended in the past to be a good thing for me, so yes.”

“Well, there will be a number of ways for you to do that. You could head directly to Nadel’s heart, you could prowl the river and slaughter the torch bearers, you could perhaps return to the villa, or you could search out the leader, I can feel him from this distance. All of these should ignite it, but I can’t quite tell what each will bring about,” the homunculus explains. You can hear the rushing snowmelt nearby, along with Nadel’s screams and the beat of horse hooves. The fire is scaring up the prey, dozens of them. This woods is truly plentiful compared to what you are used to.

“The ones spreading fire. They are the danger, and can be taken care of easily. It is the fire killing Nadel, not the others, no?” you respond as you run towards the stream.

“An astute conclusion, a safe one,” the homunculus responds as you round a bend in the stream and see two humans on horseback, carrying several flaming branches. There’s a wild fear in their eyes, but also an excitement. You growl as the horses see you. Schatten has already slipped into the woods to flank them as you dash forward.

“By the blood! What is that?” the human in front shouts as his horse rears up, flailing its hooves in the air. The beast of burden may be a stupid creature of prey, but you know it is strong, so you dodge to the side, splashing water behind you. With their attentions on you, neither of them see Schatten burst from the brush to their side.

Both of you lunge for the legs of the humans, trying to rip them down. You catch only the belly of the horse and rip it out nonetheless. Both horses are shrieking and the humans are shouting as they fall into the water. While Schatten didn’t manage to bite the rider or even the horse, it seems he scared the prey enough for it to break an ankle trying to escape from him.

The humans land in the stream with you, grabbing at their waists for their daggers, and their fires are doused by the frigid water.

The horse next to you is scrambling back to its feet, but will die eventually. The human is your true prey. When you gaze swings back to him, you can see him sliding away from you, splashing through the water. He has the dagger in his hand, but the cold has already taken it toll, and he can hardly hold it straight. When you pounce, he throws it up between you and him, but can’t keep any strength in it before you push down and seize his throat.

The human screams for a moment before you crush his windpipe. You drop the corpse into the water when you hear the other human shout. Schatten is atop him, snarling and snapping his teeth. But the human is holding him at bay, then you see the bloody dagger in his hand.

But for the latter I wasn't entirely clear on how/if modifiers stack when two wolves perform the same fleeing action together. (For the former I assume by "Schatten actually gets +2 on this defense" that you meant he got that as his Fight 2 modifier *instead of* the rest of the pack's Fight 1.)
>>

>>
>>30172885
Modifiers don't stack, everyone rolls, everyone has to independently get over the attack, if someone doesn't, the lowest roll takes the hit unless there's some fluff reason for flight.

As for Fight, again, everyone rolls independently and has to independently beat the defense, but this allows everyone to hit in the same update

That post was confusing, so I tried to stop rolling like that

You leave your kill floating in the stream and dash over to Schatten. The human is managing to hold Schatten back, but the black wolf is creating a massive blind spot for him. You close up behind Schatten and sink your teeth into the human’s flailing leg. You yank him back into the bloody water as he screams for help, but Schatten ends his life with a swift bite.

You back off for a moment to check the horses. The one with the broken ankle is hobbling away as best it can, and the one trailing intestines in the water is trying to flee after it. Then you hear the snapping of sinew as the human shrivels up. “What a useful ability he has,” the homunculus muses as the black wolf walks over to you, licking the blood from his lips. You can see that the dagger had sliced into his back, but his body seems to be holding the wound together and healing it rapidly.

“Will the fire kill Nadel before I can?” you ask the homunculus as you walk back to your bloody kill. You are still hungry and know that you need all the strength you can muster for a protracted battle.

“Why would you want to kill Nadel? We have to save him!” she responds as you rip through the human’s furs.

“And saving him is supposed to be my path to power? It’s a nightmare that nearly killed me and my pack, or did you forget that?”

“Nadel wasn’t always like this, I told you, didn’t I? Nadel only became a nightmare because of Caecilia. He was once just the spirit of the woods, then she started morphing his legend,” the homunculus explains, her voice soft, and mournful?

“That isn’t quite what I agreed to, much harder,” you respond as you gut the human to rip out his liver.

“But you can do it, I know you can,” she responds as three humans start shouting. You look around and see that Schatten disappeared into the woods, but he’s likely nearby. Of the three of them, two are archers and the third is a swordsman.

You snarl at the humans, and start edging towards the woods. You start thinking of something to say to the humans, but then the homunculus speaks up on your behalf, or perhaps yours. “These are not your woods. They are protected,” she states, her voice echoing from the fire shadows. The humans lower their weapons for a moment, giving you the opportunity to dash away. Schatten was ready to attack, buut follows you through the woods anyways.

Smoke and flash fires seem to be everywhere erupting in briar patches, but the muddy snow retards the fire enough for you to navigate it. The homunculus silently guides you through the trees. At one point the path she takes you on is almost atop the road, so close you walk atop the scorch marks from an earlier fire. When the horses nearby catch your scent you can hear the humans temporarily lose control of them, but you aren’t quite spotted by them.

“The humans are at Nadel’s heart,” the homunculus says. “Please, hurry before it’s too late.” You nod and go from a trot to a run, dodging between the trees and approaching the crowd of humans ahead of you.

The sun has fully crested over the mountains now, lighting the forest and all within it. You and Schatten slow to a stop just out of sight of the clearing. Nadel’s tree is in the center, and the forest around it has been burned back several meters. The charred, pitch stained trunks still stand like gravemarkers.

A dozen humans encircle the knotted oak, and with fire in hand. The layers of vines that had been wrapped around the oak have already been burned off, but the tree seems to still be alive, the only wound the one you inflicted. Sap still oozes out of it.

The leader of the strange smelling humans stands in front of his men, but isn’t looking at Nadel, he has his back turned to the tree. Instead, he’s watching a scrawny human try to catch his breath. “Please wait, the dominus will speak with you,” the scrawny human urges.

Every time we wait around for something bad shit happens to us. They'll probably adsorb Nadel's powers or something equally broken next.

Better to take the initiative and break their spirit right off the back.

Okay, let's see. That's probably Cecilia's slave.

The invaders are taking Nadel hostage. They're trying negotiations with the villa.

- Attacking the leader is suicidal, we'd be attacked by his men, too many.
- revealing we have Cecilia's shadow here might be bad too.

A dozen humans, all around the oak.... holding fire.

Not weapons.

Attack someone on the outskirts.
>>
>>30174641
> Attacking the leader is suicidal, we'd be attacked by his men, too many.

You act like killing him wouldn't throw the entire group in disarray like it always does.
Schatten and us can easily take out whoever sticks around.
>>
Huh, Cecilia and Cecilia's shadow both want to save Nadel from the invaders' fire, though for different reasons.

Cecilia and the invaders on the other hand both hate us, for different reasons.

She's sending her figurehead husband to negotiate at least. But he might bring Cailan, Champion of the Arena as a guard, in which case we might be fucked.

Better kill em now then yeah.
>>
>>30174700
when has killing the leader. something we have never done, thrown anyone into disaray. even the guys that fought treebark fought to the last man and they had less men, these guys clearly have way more men and will fuck uss till we bleed so fuck you were not attacking them what the fuck is wrong with you
>>
>>30174700
>thinking you can kill the leader before getting ganked
>>
>>30174774
Yeah really. The point is to demoralize and terrify the humans, we just need to kill one of them to do that. It doesn't have to be the leader, who everyone will SEE us go towards long before we reach him.

Have our little shadow call out for help like a damsel in distress from the woods and lure them into the woods.
>>
>>30174774
i remember some of them run away and ignite our legend, and we were a simple wolf.
>>
I have to put this thread on hiatus for ~2 hours, I was hoping to churn out one last update before I had to go, but there's good discussion going on about what you should do right now, so I don't want to cut that short
>>
>>30174870
You didn't answer their question anon.
>when has killing the leader. something we have never done, thrown anyone into disaray.
>killing the leader
we have never killed the leader.

ever.

that kid's dad, we only watched him get elephant executed.
>>
>>30174894
the leader IS a good target
who will care if we kill a random mook?
but killing their leader? that's perfect to spread fear and legends
>>
>>30174931
other random mooks will.

who are 10/11ths of the ones we have to terrify in the first place.

and has been... exactly what we did before.
>>
>>30174894
Not either of those guys didn't Rom once say that we kept losing because we didn't do this?
Or rather that this is what he would do?

You're right that we've never gone for the leader before but when was the last time we didn't almost die in a fight? Might be the change we need.
>>
>>30174931
what makes you think we will even be able to kill the leader since we are outnumbered, what makes you think if we kill him all of them will just run away, when has a human ever ran from a fight with us, why are you dumb.
>>
>>30174989
Romulus did point out that he had said he worked on a 'morale system' which I could not actually find ANY mention of in the first threads.

Apparently we're supposed to infer this from the changed modifiers of enemies over course of battle.

Tearing someone's throat out reduces morale of their comrades, we don't need to take an absurdly higher risk to shoot for a target that will not give that much more of a reward in morale loss, and gives the enemy considerable amount of reaction time, sacrificing the element of surprise.
>>
>>30175005

>>
>>30175059

>>
How does one go about undoing what Caecilia did to Nadel's legend?

We could start a different legend among the invaders about this forest, via the homunculus.

But what kind?
>>
>>30175366
There is some sort of metal thingamajig inside Nadel, maybe it's the source of corruption and shit.
>>
>>30175366
the evil forest that ate everything that got fucked up by fire and is alright now.
>>
>>30175057
so try to kill a random mook, hide, ask homu to scare them, rinse and repeat as much as needed?
>>
>>30175480
Whitefang said he cracked it though. It ain't metal.

Though if you assume it's a bad thing to be removed, homunculus could reverse psychology them like.

>Begone, intruders, you will never take Nadel's ultimate treasure which is inside his eye, we won't let you!
>>
>>30175772
"HAHA foolish talking wolf shadow, we were just going to kill the tree but now were going to kill it and take its treasure. HAAHH what a bafoot, right guys?"
"Gee youy said it boss"
"DAS ROIT IZ DA BOSS SO GETS TA CHOPPIN DAT DER TREEAMAJIG FER DA WOTZITS INSIDE"

i forgot what i was talking about there
>>
>>30175366
Alternatively, we could try to exterminate the legend... we just have to help the invaders slaughter the hundreds of humans in the villa who live in fear of the nightmare woods.

We could bargain to show them the secret entrance in the back we used to get in, if they spare Nadel.
>>
>>30177159
i like the thought of this idea but i doubt they would trust a word we say especialy after killing 2 of their guys
>>
>>30177380
Hey, they don't have to know that yet.

The trouble is the slave, and the arriving lord of the villa, and whoever guards him. The invaders will need the element of surprise.

Take the dominus hostage (as if Caecilia will care). We'll probably have to kill Callan ourselves. The invaders can free the slave or kill him to keep him quiet? Wonder if we can get him for our party--no that'd be impossible with our Nightmare status.
>>
>>30177494
Of course there's... not really an easy way to put this. Establish ourselves as divine guardians of the forest, or bargainers?

>Intruders. Cease your desecration of these woods, or suffer our wrath.
>To atone for your transgression, you must kill the witch who cursed this forest and all her people.
>Accept, and we shall show you the secret way into her villa.
>Harm the heart of the forest, and you will die.
>>
I propose to wait and watch, see how the situation develops.

Guys, we have 6 int, we can't into deception.
>>
>>30177989
No need to deceive if it's an honest bargain.

I wonder if our wolfbro be willing to NOT-kill humans that may be same tribe as the Tracker that killed the goatman.
>>
>>30175057
Morale is behind the scenes. Just assume the average person isn't suicidal, and is in fact bordering on cowardly. Like real people

Schatten is growling quietly, almost loud enough for them to hear. But the soldiers are turned inwards, their attention towards Nadel. “I would advise caution, to both of you. The man in the center is not ordinary, and I believe both Cailan and Caecilia are coming here. Seven legends in the same place might cause trouble,” the homunculus whispers.

“You count yourself?”

“Of course, a girl must always think well of herself, even if I don’t have a name. I’m waiting for you to fix that by the way,” she responds. The messenger man has been led off to the side, the strange smelling man behind him has his sword drawn.

The leader in the center is addressing his men. “So it would seem that the whipped slave has stood up for himself finally. Or maybe he’s just his bitch’s toy? Dancing her dance for us. It would explain the dress!” his men all laugh at that.

“I would speak terms Abirami,” a man announces from the opposite side of the grove. He’s approaching the clearing with several guards on either side, and behind him is Cailan, but the warrior seems smaller than last you saw him.

The leader, Captain Abirami, chuckles at that. “We gave you our terms. I don’t see,”

“And I will meet them,” the Dominus states, cutting Captain Abirami off.

The two men stare at each other as they meet in the burnt clearing. “You would give us access to your stores of supplies? Allow us to destroy this abomination in your forest?”

“In exchange for peace, yes.”

“And your wife?”

“What of her?”

1/2
>>
>>30179071
“She is an abomination as well, no?” Captain Abirami asks as he paces around the half dozen men. “And this one is as well.”

“Cailan is a slave. His value comes from it. But my wife I will consent to,” the Dominus answers. Cailan is staring at the ground, and every other human is completely silent.

“Then bring her forward,” Captain Abirami finally states as he retreats to his men.

“Something terrible is about to happen,” the homunculus whispers as one of the guards runs back. A moment later, Caecilia is brought forward, bound in chains and naked. Captain Abirami smiles and turns to his men.

i wonder.

that ??? spark.

at first all we knew is he "hit something hard", then apparently he "cracked" it according to whitefang, and now we know the hard thing was "destroyed".

are we supposed to bite out the still beating hearts of other Legends to feed this spark?

I wouldn't say PERFECT.... the odds seem to be stacked against us unless we can turn some of them against eachother.

Who all is here and whose side are they on?

The Twisted, Whitefang, Homu, Schatten and then Captain Abirami, Calian, and Caecilia, Dominus, and about 10 other humans I think?

Shit is gettin' scary yo.

Caecilia and Callan are the enemy of dominus and Abirami, and dominus is useless.

If we can distract them Caecilia and Callan might be able to pull something.

damn, i figured we had to reduce our enemies' numbers before more arrived.

You know what, this is just about my only readily available source of people willing to read my writing, so I will start dumping Wolf Quest fluff in exchange for feedback on my rewrite of EDEN

Indeed it was, but it should stand on it's own as a coherent story

When I ran it as a quest I was basically forcing myself to expand and realize the world and see the plot related pitfalls I had accidentally created

I actually wrote 175 pages of story for it a few years ago, but plotted myself into a wall, so I had to start fresh

It's why I can say I have the most notes of any QM ever

Do you guys think we could strike a deal with Dominus?
Attack Abirami and his men in tandem when they are distracted with Cecilia perhaps? In exchange we get to kill his wife ourself.
Or should we simply let them be?

>>
>>30185180
First we have to stop the torchbearers immediately.

We can use the homunculus while we do that...

I was wondering if we could pawn off the homunculus onto our enemies to hinder *their* modifier. We can always get her back.

As long as it's not an enemy that wants her for themselves and is willing to flee the battlefield to re imprison her.
