Evolution Game!

How to play:
• Open an image of a species in MS Paint, or your editor of choice
• Make one evolutionary change to that species
• Save as .PNG!
• Post your new species in the thread with a description of what evolution you've added and why

Notes:
• Unless stated explicitly, no species ever goes extinct. Old species can still evolve, even if they're not on the latest "chain"
• Try to make your evolutions gradual and realistic
• Have fun

The setting for this game are small tidepools that are rich in surface algae. Basic plants exist on the land between pools.
The only species on the planet are the three starting species, coming up in the next few posts.

Skrelp are the most prolific creatures in the tidepools.

Using a single tail to navigate the waters, they follow their keen sense of smell to identify patches of surface algae to feed on with their dextrous tendrils.

They reproduce by external fertilisation of a large clutch of eggs.

Main predator: Burz

The Burz are flying creatures and have difficulty taking off once landed, especially when they wings are wet. When well-fed and dry, they can hover indefinitely.

Using light-sensitive patches on their heads, they scan the waters for surfacing Skrelp, then dive to grab them in their mandibles.

They reproduce by external fertilisation of a single egg which is normally laid on a plant.

Felg are aquatic opportunists. They use smell-sensitive pores on their heads to identify dead bodies in the water, Skrelp or Burz. The sharp "tooth" at the front of their mouths is used for scraping off bits of flesh.

They reproduce by external fertilisation of a large clutch of eggs.

Main predator: Burz (rarely)

Some of the furry-legged Burz abandon the strenous life of hovering, and perch on leaves that overhang the water.

The Perch Burz are extremely territorial over a good leaf, and will fight relentlessly for a hunting position. Females use this fact to find decent mates by laying their eggs on the best hunting leaves.

The Felg who partake in hunting also have their smell receptors become attuned to the smell of living Skrelp.

Due to not being able to slip away from the Felg as easily, certain Skrelp have been developing a counter-measure to stop the problem at its source. Organs which appear as white spots on the skin act as a means of storing toxins naturally produced by the skrelp's body functions. Upon death, large amounts of toxin are released into the skrelp's body, making it deadly to eat.

The purple skrelp are far more visible from above and are decimated by the leaf-sitting Horned Burz (>>30120882) due to their tendency to remain still on leaves spotting prey.

The occasional successful attachment to the nutrient rich Burz and limited survival in air. Parasitic felg find themselves at the door of new evolutionary opportunities. With the rise of the many variants of the Perch Burz, it became almost impossible for the long-tailed variant to find any sustenance amidst the competition. The most successful amongst them were a strange new breed, with broad wings best suited for soaring and gliding, rather than hovering. Unfortunately, these heavy wings make diving a suicidal, condemning the Burz to death if they get caught beneath the waves.

Spending their days migrating from place to place across the ocean, the larger 'Fan Burz' conserve their energy and seem to dine exclusively on the easier prey - the predatory breeds of Felg. With the Skrelp diving deeper and avoiding the surface, the Fan Burz are reliant on catching Felg unawares.

Sir, I salute you!

The yellow felg morphology occurs in response to higher oxygen and UV light gradients, favouring it in felg that parasitize the nascent land-skrelp and those that prefer the dorsal surfaces for their attachment site. The delicate sensory filaments are susceptible to damage by sunlight, hence the absence on the yellow felg morph

Among the Perch Burz who don't fight for a better hunting spot, the females use the number of parasites a male has as an indication of how often he dives, and by extention, his success.

After mating, these Perch Burz adopt a ritual of staying together momentarily and eating eachother's parasites. The egg is laid and fertilised by the couple, and will stay on the father's leaf until hatching.

While some of the long-tailed Burz evolved better gliding wings, some of them have taken a different route.

A similar protective membrane grows over their eyes to allow for better underwater vision.

As Felg usually release their eggs in water, this land buisness has taken some toll on them. However being attached to other species made Fleg be able to maniupulate the host behaviour by a little. The purple diver population previously competed successfully with the armored skrelp due to the latter's higher metabolic tax. With the development of truly predatory dentition in the felg (>>30121615) and better manoeuvrability in the dive burz (>>30121763) the entire purple diver population is destroyed. The remaining armoured skrelp expand into the purple diver niche, developing a far more flexible feeding proboscis capable of rapid motion and retraction. In the event of attack by dive burz and carnivorous felg the proboscis is retracted and held parallel to the body, protecting the skrelp's delicate feeding apparatus.

(the original purple diver population was mine, and I think it just hit an evolutionary dead end, given how vulnerable it was to water-borme predation)

I think the issues here is that we should definately diversify those species as separate branches. So far we've kept calling the land krelps and sea krelps...well...krelps. I think by now we can agree they are completely different critters.

Same for the Burz splitting into land, sea and air. They should grow more distinct. It could also get creativity more flowing.

They are certainly species in their own right by now, the root name just tends to stick around as a legacy thing.

You can rename a species with each evolution, if you like, but it tends to make more sense when they go through a fundamental change like diet, or habitat - like you say.

With the Dive Burz's only real competition being the Predatory Felgs, the Dive Burz have flourished.
However, the slower Burz are more likely to be caught and eaten by Felgs, hence certain trends became more common breeding factors among the Dive Burz.
Their long tails became more muscular to allow for faster paddling, while their wing muscles changed to allow faster steering and more maneuverability underwater, at the cost of efficient flight.
Finally their heads become bullet-shaped, to decrease resistance and allow them to travel faster through the water.
These new Swim Burz are less capable of flight, only able to maintain altitude for a brief period of time before returning to the water.

The Fan Burz find great sustenance amongst the exodus to land. Their tails find new use as stranglers and constrictors, wrapping around the throats of the Land Skrelp and choking them. They also prey upon the Lurz, capable of almost swallowing the smaller critter whole. With so much food to spare, the Fan Burz rapidly begin to grow in size, most of which goes to their tails and their wingspan.

However, their clumsy tail and their gargantuan wings makes getting off the earth an extremely difficult task. Instead, the Fan Burz make their home amongst the underside of Thungus caps, using their mandibles to carve nooks and crannies into the gills and then utilising their tails to hang from these new crevices. Their shells have slowly begun to change, matching the more mellow colouration of the Thungus to best blend in.

A secondary mutation occurs, wherein the tendrils spreading out from the base of the Thungus become a more obvious colour, making them more attractive to roaming Scregs. When the Scregs come to feed on the mushroom, they become easy pickings for the nesting Fan Burz.
Thus the Ambush Thungus is born.

I feel like the Aqlurz might need some more of bioflorescence to see fish in the darker parts of the ocean, or just gave outstanding rods in it's eyes to see in low light enviroments.

Still comfortable in their spot as an apex predator and feasting on carnivore, herbivore and omnivore alike, the Fan Burz suddenly receive a shock as their crude light-sensitive patches are unable to spot their prey now that the lesser creatures are resorting to camouflage.

This leads to the emergence of a strange new breed, whose light-sensitive patches have transformed into tiny slits surrounded by large bands of white muscle that allow for more powerful and focused vision, capable of spotting small movements on the earth below. Unfortunately, they're also quite colour-blind as a result of this specialised vision.

With the different species of Thungus emerging, the Fan Burz find themselves split in two as well, with some breeds adapting camouflage of their own to fit in with the Creeping Death Thungus.

Some Durd's anti-toxin glands mutate, and in addition to rendering them immune to airborne toxins, it concentrates them, causing them to excrete this concentrated cocktail as a form of paralytic venom from their beaks.
These Venom Durds develop a lazier method of hunting to their non-venomous cousins.
They swoop in, latch on, and peck their victims, envenoming them. Then return to the air and wait for the victim to succumb before landing and devouring them.

The Scavenger Felg has been struggling to stay alive amidst all of the predators and has had to suffer some radical changes over the course of years.

Its teeth have become blunter, designed to adapt to all manner of sustenance. Rather than simply flesh it can now gnaw algae and even chew ferns and fruit swept off from the shore.
Its egg sacs have become boated and swollen, designed to distribute as many young as possible. There is no beast that can quite match their massive rate of production.
Finally, it has developed a more advanced method of propulsion, no longer able to survive using two useless tentacles. Instead, this fin allows it to swim along at a much safer pace instead of flailing in front of a predator's mouth.

Having developed enough to become a species of its own, this breed of Scavenger Felg is now known as the Falgo.

Felgs adapted to different Durrd lineages show three distinct morphs. Some morphs tend to help their host by giving it some extra senses, as other Felg varieties tend to do this. Some Felgs do alter the behaviours of their host. Males are made more agressive, while females made more social, helping to spread the parasites. The third lineage uses unsuccessful Durrd to transfer to Scralls to use them as incubators for their offspring.
