The countryside to the west of Central city is barren, nearly, an opposite to the northern wilds. It's a wide-ranging dry grassland with sudden tall hills, winding trade roads, and grazing beasts, natural and magical. Karl looks out the window quietly as we ride.

It was only yesterday you learned of his past. A living weapon, made from an adherent of Law, for adherents of Law. A killing machine of unstoppable power and tenacity. Something about him infuriates you, something about him excites you. He feels at once dangerous and quiet. His eyes, soft greys, look to you, then away. He's not solemn, he just seems to sense your lack of trust, and has decided against speaking.

Still, though, it will be a while before you reach a proper stopping point...

"So..." you start, with a sigh. "What were the kings like? The old ones?"

He thinks for a moment. "Dolan..." he started, "The first King under Law instead of some other God, the first proper King and not a tribal leader..." he chuckles. "How odd is it that our kingship more closely matches the Dra's and not our old, tribal selves." he mutters. "In any case, Dolan was a man of trickery, deception, and wit. He held his kingship with a steady, strong grip, using all measures he could to secure it. He was a man of power - A magus. Almost an archmage. And he used that power to its utmost." he sighs. "When the wars calmed, and the Critter public ceased their overt rebellion, Dolan sent me out often to crush them. Town after town, rebel after rebel. Eventually I had to dye my hair and color my skin magically."

"You darkened your skin?"

"Lightened, actually." he admits. "My tan was far deeper than this. More chocolate than milk tea." he grumbles. "Anyway. Eventually, things calmed enough for him to be more covert with his operations. I don't agree with all his measures, but he prevented civil unrest following a major conflict."

"And Old Hile?"

"Mmmn..." he looks out the window. "A soldier in a king's throne. You can sense it, in how he moves and acts - he's preparing for conflict, thinking about conflict, hunting great beasts for sport and feast. He was a warrior when his father was king - the two blades of the Empire, me and him. His rule is waning - any citizen can see it - and his son is on the rise. He can hardly wait to be freed of the shackles of kinghood."

>Continuing...
>>
>>29998397
"Well... I suppose that's natural. What about your rise? You weren't always like this...?"

"No, I wasn't. I..." he laughs. "To think of my younger self. It's almost funny... I was a weedy little cleric of Law. Barely 20, and Ogres, Appals, and Alvin were at my doorstep. They started with words and fruit, and soon moved to much nastier things. Each time, I would stand in the doorway. We had sick, injured soldiers in the temple, and our sanctuary of them was... not viewed well in an area with many Critters. Eventually, they tried to rush past me. I... Held the frame. For three hours, they stabbed, pushed, cut, smashed, and I did not move - I whispered my prayers to heal my wounds and strengthen my arms."

He looks at his feet. "But it wasn't enough. There was too many of them. That's when Law descended on me. He told me my purpose, and gave me my power. I was so enraptured by it, I don't even know what happened next. They said that the charred bones of appals fell from the sky, burning with their speed to slam the earth, for days following. I was what was needed then, a beacon of hope."

He scoffs, "Now, I'm not nearly as sure. I just know that Law will tell me when I'm not needed anymore. He hasn't spoken yet."

>Continued...
>>
>>29998397
"So... you knew the prince as a boy?"

"Old Hile and Celestine's son. I did. I delivered him." he says with a smile. "Such energy." he says. "Even as his mother withered away, aging advanced by an Alvin curse, he was a wild, happy, bright little boy. He did all he could to put a smile on his mother's face. Spent most of his time with her. She was so... intelligent. If Hile was a beast, then Celestine was his tender, the intellect to his rage, and the boy took after her." he sighs. "Perhaps that is why the boy was so furious with the king. There was a time when we could break that Alvin curse. The King would have had to give up his age - he was thirty at the time, and the cure would have cost him forty years - and he denied it."

Karl shakes his head. "In the grand scheme of things, it was wise. Hile was necessary for the kingdom, and the curse helped to cement Law's place in the city's faithful. But the prince was wildly upset in his puberty, an angry, wild thing, prone to rage against anyone and everything. It was only his mother's dying words that calmed that tempestuous heart."

"...What did she say?"

" 'Your father is already losing me. Do not flee his side when he needs you most.' she said. She looked so... old. She was only forty years of age, and she looked nearly twice that. The castle was quite morbid when she passed. And... What few Alvin were left in the city were nearly chased out."

>Continued...
>>
>>29998397
"And the Gods?"

He chuckles.
"My, but you're chatty today." he says, his voice growing warmer. "I've met most of them. While Law is my patron, I spoke to him the least. To the others, I have mostly had words to confirm suspicions, perform augeries, or the like. They strike me as... To the one, overfocused and underbearing." he says quietly. "Blinded by their ambitions, they cannot see the greater picture."

You frown as the carriage comes to a stop. He emerges and stretches.

"I shall go through my forms and warm up - it's been a while since I saw serious combat."

You sit down, nodding as you watch. He pulls off his shirt, leaving him in long, flowing pants. And then he moves.

Even without his Sworn power, he is a tempest of punches and kicks, rapid and strong. His movements and positioning are graceful, his rippling muscles betraying strength beyond you. Sweat begins to form after about half an hour, flowing in small drops down his firm body as he slowly stops, panting. He snatches up a towel and dries himself, stretching.

You can't help but bite your lip a little as he gestures for you.

You find yourself distracted, your movements a little imperfect, as your thoughts return to him again and again, and you cut it a little short before sitting next to him, taking in the scent and heat radiating from him.

He casts a smile your way.

You smirk, letting him come at you, skillfully dodging and pushing away his attacks. The two of you go back and forth, for what seems like twenty solid minutes.

"You're better than I thought!" Karl says, unable to get in a single blow. "I was hoping for a solid challenge!"

He rises.
"I admit, it's rather rare to see such spirit. Perhaps that's why..." he shakes his head, dismissing his own words. "Nonetheless, clearly I should practice more." he says, going back to forms.

He nods.
"Most excellent." he says, sitting up, his tail curling into his lap.

"The stars are fine tonight."

"Thank you. I painted them after Bahamut scattered them." he says, "But I already used all the paint on the world, so I had only blue and white left, with a little red." he lets out a short, halting cackle. "The old crusty bastard was quite upset! 'Coyo, you fool, they will not shine nearly as brightly!', he said. But ah, the secrecy of night, is it not also wonderful?" he asks, relaxing.

"Any reason you're here?"

Now see, this is a game that has roots in the traditional riddle, and we -can- get useful answers if we think about it.

We can only ask true or false questions, though, and we have to use clever word-play to get answers we can use.

Do we have any true or false questions we need answers to?
>>
Guys, why the fuck would you ask yes or no questions? The answers will be yes and no, and we'll get no information out of it. Ask questions that require some sort of explanation.
>>
>>30003193
my bad, yeah those guys.
>>30003315
Mine is the only yes or no quest, plus i doubt he would make it that easy.
>>
>>30003128
We should reframe this question.

"If my -other- question was 'did any Appal survive the soul-sucking rod', would you answer yes or no?"

Then we'd know for sure that the opposite of the answer he gave was true.
>>
>>30003406
Explain.
>>
>>30003437
It's a logic problem.

However, if we figure it out, we can work it to our advantage.

Take the question I posited, for instance - if he lies, then he will be telling us the opposite of the truth. If he tells the truth, he will be telling us - truthfully- what a liar would say.
>>
>>30003524
It doesn't work since there's only one question and he's giving both answers.
>>
>>30003552
... ah, right, then we need to work around his answers. Sorry, 2am, my reading comprehension is shite. We can still work with it, though.

"What would your other answer be if I asked you whether any Appal survived the soul-sucking rod?" should work.

Then he should give us two identical answers, both lies
>>
>>30003161
"Who is Wood Worm?"

His tail swings.

"Wood Worm is a powerful demonologist, a monster of an Appal, who is angry with the human empire and knows no morals." he says. "Or... He is a distant Dra, working to sabotage negotiations with the human empire, and drop them into war to see his love again!" he cackles.

He stares you down, giggling.

There's - strictly speaking - no way we can know for sure whether one or the other is the lie.

And does it matter? He's given us two potentials, which are decent as data points if nothing else. We know one of them is true, after all. Assuming we can trust this guy. Hahahahaha.

At this point i'd just thank him for his time rather than trying to guess which is the right one, unless he offered us a boon if we guessed which was which.

Seeing through clothes is really good for non-perving purposes.

It lets us instantly know who has concealed weapons under their robes (so long as they didn't stuff their daggers up their ass, prison-style)
>>
>>30006469
Though it does glow when in use, so it isn't the most subtle thing in the world.

>>30006508
Eye patch? The patch is clothe, their clothes are also clothe.

>>
>>30006529
Eyepatches are cool.
>>
>>30006529
Or we could wear a stone eyepatch.
>>
>>30006579
If we're looking at something through a wall, presumably the wall is preventing them from seeing us.

The eyepatch for clothes peeking is only needed to prevent them from seeing something up with the glowing eye.
>>
>>30006529
the eye sees through ONE layer of material, so putting an eyepatch on to cover up the glow of it being used renders it useless
>>
>>30006655
On the bright side, we never have to worry about being blindfolded again.
>>
>>30006655
Are you sure? It doesn't mention anything about layers, all it says it that it can see through a single material, like cloth, wood, stone, maybe even skin.
>>
>>30006689
and if we're wearing an eyepatch and try to look through a stone wall infront of us, guess what our eye sees?

a fuckign eyepatch
>>
>>30006710
And the eyepatch was mentioned as a way to screen people for concealed weapons under their clothes without them seeing a big glowing eye staring at them.

Not for looking through walls.
>>
>>30006710
We can always move the eyepatch out of the way for that.

The person who suggested an eyepatch wanted it so we can look through cloth and identify any hidden weapons without our glowing eye being noticeable.

If we're trying to look through a wall we move it out of the way, and look through the wall, I'm not worried about people on the other side seeing us.
>>
((Sorry about that, will be back soon
>>
>>30006746
>>30006757
it all depends on whether the ability works off of that specific eye, or it shares its vision between both and superimposes one optic nerves image on the others receptors

if it does not, and it works on LOS of that particular eye, putting something in front of it will block it

I very much doubt you could look through the wooden cabinet in a room while behind behind the walls of that room

We might not want to mention that we were indirectly the cause of those guards getting maimed. Talk about a mood killer.

You explain the encounter with Coyo, and he stares at you.
"You..." he sighed. "Well, you had no way of knowing, but... That tail often does much worse. You're lucky to still be human, let alone have gotten away with just an eye. Hell, you're lucky you still want to wear clothes."

"What?"

"His tail can do a hundred and one things when touched, all up to chance." he says.

You sigh as he continues. "Well, regardless of who it is, the mines are sure to hold some form of answer."

He cooks breakfast, and you look over at him.

"So... 300 years of practice, and you're still pining? I'm almost dissapointed."

"And so am I." he says, "That you'd forget something I mentioned just last night."

"er...What?"

"I told you - Since Dolan, I've been in the castle. Law's power further works against me, as well. And, I was even more severe back then. More businesslike."

"But-"

He leans over you, eyes drilling into the back of your skull.
"I don't care for pity."

"It's not pity. I'm just worried about you."

He deflates, in thought.
"I'm afraid none of them have." he says quietly.

"Them?"

"...The girls? Of the castle?" he says, blinking. "You have poor mornings." he says, rising and setting on pulling up stakes and packing the carriage. "We will get there by evening if we head out now."

"Are you alright?"

"I'm fine, I just..." he sighs. "There are things I don't like thinking about, and you seem to have a habit of making them all spring to mind."

He leaps atop the carriage and starts tying the luggage into place.

He's not really good at change, and puts women off in some ways because of this. He's lonely and doesn't really get to leave the castle often.

"I can understand that. If you want to talk I can listen."
You help him pack, but he doesn't seem to be in much of a mood to talk. You can /feel/ the frustration radiating from him, almost like heat and tension in the air. Something about it tells you that much of the tension has nothing to do with sex - a deeper, stronger anger is present.

Something about him feels like an instrument's string, tight and ready to snap as the carriage moves, but you can't place it.

"I am... Looking in." he says, making you jump. "I am looking in on the world that no longer needs me, unable to meaningfully interact with it. Law told me I would never hold a woman's hand, that I would never feel their embrace. He told me feelings towards me would be ephemeral, replacable, unlasting. I was given a choice, one I would carry for the rest of my life. I could have died in that temple. Instead I chose to save dozens of women and children. And for that..."

You can see his fist clenching. "For that I was consigned to this. Forever. But I cannot turn from Law, for there is a chance, a tiny chance, no matter how small and dim, that there will be someone there that he lets me find. Alone in that castle everyone will grow to hate, working under a god that will soon be outdated, chasing ideals that brand me a monster, someone, sometime, might maybe find me. But if I turn away now, I will be as dust, alone and..." he covers his face. "It is shameful. Someone of my status should never..."

You lean over, hugging him tightly. He stiffens, then relaxes as you speak.

"You told me you weren't alone." you say softly. "That there are others like you, other champions. And the faith might not become as depreciated as you think." you lean in on his shoulder, and he holds you in return. There is a long moment of thought, and he parts from you.

"That... was only partially true." he admits.

"...What."

"There are dozens of Sworn." he continues. "Some of Humanity, some of Law. But a Sworn can be of ANYTHING, anything at all, so long as you dedicate your life to it. Any concept, any thought. There are at least two hundred Sworn among humanity. Half of those are to a god. Twenty of those, to Law. Four of them like me, to Humanity." he says. "I... Don't know where they are. But you're right. I'm not alone." he says, kissing your cheek as you stop in front of a yawning cave.

He grips your hand tightly.

"And neither are you."

Karl has grown on me more and more, and now we get to go explore some probably dangerous mines with him. It'll be fun.

Remember, don't swing our Breaking Spear willy nilly in there, we don't want to bring the ceiling down.
>>
>>30008903
I suppose a character shift would be interesting.
Anneline being the MC and all, we've had a considerable amount of time playing as Gina and Ja'al. A bit of time as Karl would mix things up nicely. Still, maybe you could provide us with more chances to take control of Michael or Teel as part of a side story or something.

See you tomorrow?
