You have returned to Ligish, successful in your quest to bring back the true king of the city. The people, however, seem indifferent to you, both because they never knew the king was in hiding and because a new matter concerns them. Some survivors of the Adventurers' School have returned with a colossal blight demon in their thrall, pledging to use it to defend the city in exchange for forgivenes of their past crimes. Responses to the offer are mixed to say the least. However, the king's peace holds, at least for now. You are free to return to your studies. Rabi-Tammuz an the armorer are already busy working on new projects for you.

> Pick which one you want to do first:
> Pick new spells you want to learn from the Blood Priest and Kullaa
> Try to return to the underworld in your dreams and share you recent experiences with the dead scorpionfolk
> Relax with your friends
> Request an audience with the hostage prince of Turtak

Can we visit the real king? The king of Ligish? We need to talk to the advisers so this shit doesn't happen again.
>>
>>29948698
you know, I'd sort of like to check out that prince. See what his deal is.

Checking on the scorpifolk is a priority next time we go to sleep.

So, my list of priorities is check in on prince ->relax with friends ->hang out with blood priests ->scorpifolk whenever we happen to have a nap.

Also, maybe prisoner management at some point later on. Make sure the charioteer is getting treated, and double check to see if our other prisoner was telling the truth about bending bars.
If she can bend the bars, then we might as well just keep her in a room, as the cell is pointless.

Since the king has taken a different way into the city, you follow him after briefly reuniting with Nakurtum. When you appear at the palace, the guards let you in as usual. You are informed that the king is being cleaned up after his time in the wild.

> Wait patiently for him. Maybe they'll give you some fresh meat to snack on...
> "I'd like you to lead me to him. It's a very important, sensitive matter."
> Explain exactly how you intend to have the priests heal the king's little problem.
>>

I don't mind waiting. And maybe snacking. Though, this makes me remember another problem:
just WHAT happened to the greybeard advisor?
He went into hiding, and now we can't find him. Which I guess was the point. Maybe the other advisors are still alive and in the king's dungeon.

As you eat extravagantly spiced goat, you hear from the royal guards what happened to the king's old advisors. The greybeard is staying with a merchant friend outside the city - he announced as much when he left, wagering that he would not e followed and not considered a threat. The other two were in the king's dungeons and very narrowly escaped being send to the pyramid to be bled to death. Only the mindfulness of some of the blood acolytes saved them from the knife. They too are being made presentable here in the palace.

After the better part of an hour, the king grants you an audience. He's shaved himself again. Someone must have reminded him about you, because he's obviously hiding his fear of you. "Hunzuu. I owe you my thanks again. Is there any other business you wanted to discuss?"

"I just wanted to make sure your men were all right."
The king nods. "They live. Though they trust the priests even less than before. And I have a hard time concluding that they're wrong. However, I'm trying to reduce my dependence on them. I have charged other servants with the task of helping me remember things."

"Then have them remind you that the priests are your best hope for getting well. And, well, if it matters to you... I liked it a lot when you had a beard."

The king smiles diplomatically. "Thank you for your candor, Hunzuu. I'm older than I remember. I've lost so much time. The beard made it worse. I looked more like my father than myself. But I suppose that's not all bad."

You visit the barracks adjoining the palace that the Charioteers use for their base. A very large man, almost seven feet tall, wearing bronze plates covered in horse designs, receives you. His deep voice echoes in his helmet. "The Lady Scorpion. We have heard of what you did in the pyramid. That means you know what we did as well. We trust you will not share it with those who do not need to hear. The man we sent to take the king's place is called Karkesh. He volunteered when the king's men issued the call. Out of envy, I think. The commander always favored his younger brother. Now that younger brother has taken the commander's place. And now the magic has made Karkesh truly mad, we hear. Will you bleed him?"

You shake your head. "Not if you don't want us to."

The great helmet tips forward a little, and the deep voice softens. "Ninurta teaches that sometimes death is better than shame."

"Then at least come see him and try to remind him who he is! The Sand Priest says that could help him get back to normal."

He doesn't seem to like the sound of that, but it's too reasonable an offer to refuse. "Fine. We will see if that does any good. Thank you for keeping him safe, Lady Scorpion. Safe and secret. For as long as you should choose to do so."

As yo turn to leave, he adds, "And thank you for helping to defend our city, Lady Scorpion. It is a heavy burden for a young girl to bear. We hope to relieve you of some of your burden soon. "Be very, very careful with that. We're all lucky that I turned out so well," you say. At that, the man only nods.

You arrive home just in tome to hear the Blood Priest give a lecture to his acolytes about how blood contains the divine principle that allows all things to move. The theory is peppered with stories of his own brave exploits. Afterward, Kullaa is happy to help you catch up with the studies you missed while out adventuring. She also asks how the kids at the orphanage are doing. When you explain how they liked Ninlil, she seems to get a little jealous.

You ask Kullaa to teach you how to use blood magic to stanch wounds and create the most basic blood conjurations. Over the next few days, you spend a lot of time with her Getting blood to work with is always difficult, especially for acolytes, but a small amount of blood is rationed out every month from the voluntary bleedings of the pyramid's servants. Kullaa is always very happy to spend time with you. She's kind of withdrawn by default, and there are so few female acolytes that you might be her only female friend.

> Bleed yourself so you have something to work with. Specify how many wounds you're all right with inflicting on yourself.
> You need to be at peak condition in case danger arises.

>>29950775
The next step above making blood crystals is that spell that makes blood into bugs and stuff. Making people explode outright can be done eventually, but you have to spend a large tub of blood that's already been prepared nearby or the ritualistic sacrifice of several people at once, so it's not very useful in combat.
>>
>>29951001

So that you can keep up your training with Nakurtum (and Ninlil) each morning, you wait patiently for you and Kullaa to receive your blood rations from the staff. After a few false starts, you take two jars of blood, burn one away with an incantation to Aruru, and feel the blood in the second jar start to take shape under you command. Kullaa squeaks in excitement. "That's good! Don't stretch it out too thin. When the crystals harden, they'll be strong but brittle."

You experiment with using your Slow Death venom in place of blood, but you experience no success. No other blood mage has ever even considered what to do with a whole jarful of scorpion venom. Maybe when you become experienced enough to develop your own spells, you can come up with something.

You try to shape the crystals in the likeness of Mr. Clicks. It doesn't come out perfectly. It has two lumpy, featureless arms and something resembling a tail, but those are the only clues that it's supposed to be a scorpion. It looks a little bit worse than if you had just pinched a scorpion shape out of clay. Still, you're proud of yourself! "Look," you say, "It's Mr. Clicks! His claws are out like this because he's ready for hugs."

Kullaa laughs. "That's very good! Now, the crystals will eventually start to melt, so don't get too surprised when they do. I've got a jar left. Do you want to try finding a slave who was bled today and close their wound?"

Although you once failed to remember the very name of Great Aruru, calling her Great Abubu, now you can recite an old invocation of Aruru in an antiquated dialect to activate the wound-closing spell. The jar of blood burns away in luminous pink wisps, and the tiny wound on Rabi-Tammuz's arm stops bleeding entirely. It doesn't close, but no blood beads on its surface at all.

You take away the old cloth bandage. "There we go! "You're very brave about dying. You should talk to the cook. He's all morbid and gloomy like you."

He smirks and takes up the cup he was drinking from before. "And who's to say I like people like me? Maybe I need a sunny, naive young girl to act as my foil." You think about slapping him for that, but you suppose he meant it as a compliment.

Kulla keeps following you as you set your little piece of artwork in Mr. Clicks' cage. He doesn't seem to pay it much regard, just wanting to crawl up your arm when you reach your hand in.

I guess I'm going to lean on tabni-ninsun.

"You're a very good boy, Mr. Clicks," you say as you stroke his back ever so gently with one finger. "Who's a good boy? I'm pretty sure it's you! Mama loves her little Mr. Clicks." Kullaa watches this without comment.

When you go to the Bronze Priest's quarters to look for Tabni-Ninsun, you hear the sounds of argument in familiar voices. Apparently the Bronze Priest is now strong enough to argue with his daughter.

"After all your mother and I have done for you, you want to throw it all away! This isn't a hereditary position, you know! You can't keep abusing my name after I'm gone!"
"Stop pretending like you care about me! You don't care about anyone! You were going to kill yourself to be rid of me!"
"Well, maybe I should have!"

ah shit we're terrible at familial disputes. For obvious reasons.

We should get in there, I guess. something about how he was worried sick about ruining her if he got too close- raising her wrong or making her do something regrettable. He wants a legacy, sure, but a lot of that is him wanting something for you to have after he's gone.

You push open the fine wooden door and squeeze through it. "Hey! What's this all about!"

The Blood Priest is sitting up in bed. Spots on his skin are still blackened and pitted, but he looks to be recovering steadily. "You wanted me to take an interest in my daughter, so now I am."

Tabni-Ninsun protests. "If he ever cared about me before, he wouldn't be totally ignorant and controlling."

"Any father would protest if his daughter fooled around with people who were beneath her."

"It's not like I want to marry him or anything. But even if I do, I'm going to, and you can't stop me! You can't just shut me out of your life and then decide that you want me back."

"You just nursed your dad back to health, Tabni-Ninsun. Try to keep things in perspective here."

Tabni-Ninsun rolls her eyes. She's not used to taking orders from anyone. "I guess. I mean, I was really scared when he came back so sick. I don't know why I even told him about me and Dadanum, though. Next time, I just won't tell him anything."

"Wait, you and him?"

She shrugs, "He doesn't look that bad, and he hangs around me all the time. Plus he's really fun to tease."

You skitter over to the Bronze Priest. "Are you all right? After the battle you were pretty much melted."

He nods with a sour look on his face. "There's still a lot of slag inside that they can't remove, but I'm fine. I've eaten. I've even started to get up to relieve myself. I can't tell you how much better that makes things." He grumbles. "The life of an invalid does not suit me. I gave up a death worthy of a song for this. This and an ungrateful daughter."

"At least she cares enough to think you're worth arguing with. So, that's the price of bronze magic, I guess? It kills you?"

"Well, not if you're careful. But it wears you down. Sometimes so much that you don't leave behind a recognizable corpse, just twisted, smoking filth. Sometimes it wears on the mind first and turns you into a berserk molten killing thing. Some priests of old have done that on purpose."

> "If you don't like Tabni-Ninsun fooling around with guards, you should find someone else for her. How about the king?"

"Dadanum isn't that bad. He's young. His father is a very important Archer. With some help, he could advance himself someplace higher."

The Bronze Priest grumbles some more. "I don't know why I even bothered coming back here. Why am I even necessary? Now that I'm trying to have a hand in my daughter's life, she thinks I'm doing it wrong, and so do you."

> He's just cranky from being pent up in here. Walk out.

It doesn't matter if you think you're doing it right or wrong.
What matters is that you're there for her when she needs you. I'm not entirely sure, but I think that is what parents are for.

"I was just trying to look on the bright side. She could do a lot worse. And for what it's worth, I think you're doing a good job. I don't know how a dad is supposed to act, but that seems about right."

"Well... thank you, Hunzuu. Don't take it too seriously if you catch me saying I wish I was dead. That's just my way. In fact, I remember using that line on my own dad once or twice."

After telling the Bronze Priest about finding the true king and your continuing studies, during which time he listens politely, you excuse yourself. Maybe parents and children are supposed to fight? You don't remember any really bad fights with your mother. The scariest times were the times when she wasn't there at all.

As you head for your quarters, you hear Dadanum talking to some other guards in a hurried, nervous tone. "Did you here? There's another monster! Another monster in the streets!"
