Arrogance is a consistent flaw in every sith. It loses Maul his life when he thinks he has Obi-wan on the ropes, it loses Anakin his legs and good arm when he thinks Kenobi's going to let him get away with grandstanding like Steve Austin, It loses Dooku his life when he overestimates how valuable he is to Sidious, and it gets Sidious killed when he thinks he programmed Anakin so good he'll be able to torture his son in front of him, next to a bottomless pit that appears to lead to a reactor of some sort, and not have any negative repercussions.

Besides, re-watch the fight. Maul is clearly grandstanding and toying with Obi-wan throughout the fight. He SHOULD have gotten serious when obi-wan chopped his saber, and he does in fact start to fight a little more seriously, but it's pretty clear throughout the entire fight that he doesn't see Obi-wan as a credible threat.

Also, Obi-wan's ally is the force, and a powerful ally it is. He only begins to use his full potential right when he pulls off that bullshit jump, as evidenced by the jedi leitmotif playing as he gets ready to do it.
