Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can interrupt a string of actions.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When rolling 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted, including those with dice rolls or extra spaces.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

Arland Summit Summary: Goals, Objectives, and Major Characters (thanks to Sorry for helping me and the players out!): http://pastebin.com/FsP2C5Hr
-----

You've gathered your allies together in what may be the largest meeting of heads of state in history.

From Archon, there is the Archmage, Yi Fang; and the councilors Tae Wong, who supports the Fangs; and Yong Xu, who opposed Abigail's nomination to councilorhood. And of course, Abigail herself, the heir-apparent to Archon who is driving their new foreign policy shift.

From the Great Forest, Great Tree, the elder of the werewolves, and Young Bull, his son and clan successor. Valeria Kavanere represents the elves that live alongside the werewolves, and Janus Miller comes on behalf of the humans that have their own enclave in the west of the forest. And finally, there is Vaz Grak, warleader of the orcs that dominate the eastern section of the forest, and more recently, Abbotsford.

From Kelvere, there is only the Duke Vellik - formidable by himself, though an exile from his own country.

On behalf of Haven, your own faction, comes Sir Donovan Flint, the fourth son of the Lord Arcturis Flint, who rules Arland; Auriel Lightchosen, the former 5th Highest; Lien Adavan, a lich who was once Hecate's greatest general; and Ila Marril, of humble origins, once a slave to the Ring City, now free to follow her own path.

Prince Obis Vin represents his own interests - reclaiming the throne of Kan-Abar stolen by his brother, Nulis Vin. At his side are lifelong friends and former privateers of Kan-Abar, the infamous pirate Vidar Blackwater and his daughter, Freja Blackwater, who struggles to win Obis's heart.

>con't
>>
And then there is Steward. The half-completed grand project of the dwarves - an intelligent, artifical steward that could run their city - was abandonded when the Wind Lord's reckoning descended into Va'Ad. But the computers kept running, and in the hundreds of years of dark that fell over the dwarven ruins, he finished himself. He seeks to rebuild the city, and secure a future alongside your allies.

Last, but not least, there is the Black Lady. She does not travel with your party, but waits for your word, fearing that an outright public appearance may bring disaster. She hopes to use the opportunity to stand down from the long and shaky cease-fire following the Shadow War.

And of course...there's you. For the time being, you'll be posing as John Nyx, a wandering shadow mage that happened upon Donovoan during the plague at Jacob's Field. You worked together to stop the magic run amok and defended the town from Kan-Abar's attack to give the commoners a chance to escape. From there, your friendship was a given, and in your travels you've become a central figure bringing together the various leaders for the common good.

While skeptical of Yi Fang and the Black Lady, your allies have agreed to present a united front, though they'll be watching Fang, especially, for any sign of scheming. Abigail plans to keep him in check herself, while Auriel hopes to get him locked in a room with the Black Lady, assuming that you can secure her safe entry to Arland. Either way, you need Fang to help cure Flint's parasite for good.

The Flint family was not happy to see a delegation from Archon - and especially unhappy to see Yi Fang himself, their long-time nemesis. However, thanks to Abigail's honesty and forthrightness, the tension was temporarily diffused. They've been given accomodations within the castle town, albeit somewhat damp and mediocre accomodations.

You decided to have Donovan give you a tour to get his mind off the nervousness of being back home. You ran into Gerald Flint, Donovan's eldest brother, in the keep's training grounds. Donovan, earlier baffled by an introduction to Gerald's 'wife', asked where Megan was. Megan herself was Donovan's close friend, to whom he could never confess his love. Gerald ended up proposing to and marrying her, an offer that Megan couldn't refuse, as he was the heir to Arland, and she was a relatively minor noble from the Empire. This was the impetus to make Donovan leave home on a quest to restore Aeolus's ancient order of knights.

Gerald taunted Donovan, telling him he'd only answer if his younger brother could beat him in a sword duel. But with Yi Fang's amulet keeping the Shel'kath parasite in check, Donovan proved to be more than capabale of holding his ground against his older brother. Gerald, enraged by Donovan's demand that he take the match seriously, began to use magic, but Donovan was able to maintain the upper hand.

Gerald murmured the answer he sought - that Megan was dead, and that he'd remarried. Matthel clarified - Megan died to a magical plague that had passed through the year before, the same plague that you and Donovan had worked to stop at the beginning of your journey together. Torn by horror and disbelief, Donovan ran through the streets of the city toward the graveyard. You followed at a cautious distance.

Upon reaching the graveyard, Donovan saw the casket within the tomb for himself. You let him grieve for a time in peace, then approached him to heal the wounds left from the duel, and did you best to give him some comfort.

>Last time...

...Shadow...she's...she's gone."

<...she is.>

"Did we...did we do something wrong?" His voice is cracked, and it is terrible for you to hear. "Were we too slow? Could we have saved her?"

Some time later, you both stand outside the graveyard, on the steep side of the hill. The sun is setting over the distant Kanian Hills rising past the wetlands of the river basin. You sit with your legs dangling over the stone, waiting for the night to come.

Donovan hasn't said anything in a long time. You haven't either.

<...the plague was in full force before either of us arrived in Jacob's Field,> you say. <There was nothing we could have done.>

Donovan bows his head, and his tears come again. "I never told her." His hand grasps the edge of the casket. "I never told her I loved her. I...I couldn't...this fucking thing..." His hand balls into a fist. He tucks it into his chest. "I couldn't make the words."

<I...I'm sorry, Donovan. I am here, as long as you need me.>

"...yeah," he whispers. "I know."

It hurts to see him like this. You can't imagine how much it hurts for him.

You think of how you would feel if something happened to Abigail.

You are afraid of what you would do.

"Shadow."

<Yes?>

Hatred crosses Donovan's face like a shadow. "We're going to find the person that put this parasite on me, and I'm going to kill him."

<When that time comes, I'll be your shadow, Donovan.>

"Good."

<...we may not like what we find at the other end. I don't know why anyone would do this to you.>

"I definitely won't like who's at the other end," Donovan growls. "But I'll choke the answers out of them with my bare hands."
>>

SM you fuck, I have to go to bed. May you suffer heartburn.

>"I definitely won't like who's at the other end," Donovan growls. "But I'll choke the answers out of them with my bare hands."
Surely we can make diplomacy and have a happy ending where no one has to die.
>>
>>29861348
That depends on who it is. But really, if someone went far enough to sobotage Donovans life with the parasite then we probably don't want them to ever have the chance to do it to someone else. Which kinda means ending them. Or putting them in our pocket and forgetting about 'em.

You watch the sun until as it fades behind the buildings and towers of the castle town, casting long shadows across the river. Eventually, the golden orb dips below the distant Kanian hills, and Dobshire is bathed in the orange-purple sky of early twilight.

Donovan rises from his seat on the edge of the hill and brushes himself off. "...we should get back."

<Yes.>

Footsteps stamp across the grass and dirt of the graveyard. You both turn. Auriel is there, still in her traveling clothes. Her face is red with exertion, and her breaths are coming in sharp gasps. She spots Donovan, then breaks into a jog, heading toward him. Donovan walks to meet her.

They stand there for a moment, looking at each other. Auriel stares at his face, slowly getting her breath back. She blinks a few times, and you can see her searching for the words. "Donovan. I...I heard what happened. I had to..."

She's cut off, because Donovan envelopes her in a hug. In the half-light of the night's first hour, Auriel is a sliver of silver hair, engulfed by the dark shadow of a knight.

"I love you," Donovan says. He draws back slightly and stares at her. "Have I told you that today? I'm going to say it to you every day. I love you, Auriel Lightchosen."

Auriel smiles up to him. "...you know...my name is not Lightchosen."

"It's not? Aren't all angels named that way?"

"Well...we took that name, after Hyperion blessed us. But...my true surname is Carpenter."

"Auriel Carpenter."

"Yes."

"Then I love you, Auriel Carpenter."

"And I you, Sir Donovan Flint." Auriel sighs, and leans into his chest. "...I'm glad we met that day. Even if I did almost kill Shadow."

"Well, misunderstandings and all that. Water under the bridge. Right?"

They both look at you, Donovan somewhat sheepishly, Auriel with a playful look about her features.

What is your response?

>Only for you, Donovan.
>the hell was Raziel's problem, anyway?

>>
<Under the bridge, and down the waterfall,> you say. <But you both still owe me an ignorance potion.>

For a moment, they both look confused - and then it hits them. To your surprise, Auriel blushes. "Elements, that was an embarrassing evening."

"Well," Donovan says, "it wasn't that bad. Especially the morning after."

Auriel's mouth drops. She taps a hand on his chest. "You're unbelievable."

"Heh."

Auriel huffs slightly, but the playful indignation leaves her quite quickly. "I...came to make sure you're alright, but...apparently your wounds have been healed."

"Shadow took care of it."

"Good. Donovan. Are you alright?"

Donovan closes his eyes. He shakes his head. "...no." And then he clutches Auriel to himself again, wrapping his arms around her back. "...but I have you, and that helps. I'm...so glad I have you."

Auriel does not reply, but her face is shining.

You feel an urge to hold Abigail. You wish she was here.

"...we should really get back," Donovan says. "Dinner won't be that long."

Auriel grins. "No, it won't."

"So...what were you ladies doing all day?"

"Oh...you'll see."

-----------
-----------

You walk with your two friends back down from the graveyard and into the city. More than a few people give Donovan odd looks, thanks to his torn clothing - and plenty of them point and whisper, both at him, and the former highest. Eventually, you reach the keep again, and the two of them decide to head up to their rooms to get ready for the evening.

If we do end up talking to him about this, I want to make a point of at least trying to ask him more about the other time he encountered a Shel'Kath. We're closing the gap, and with the trail cold because of proximity, absolutely anything could be a relevant clue.

I particularly want to talk to Hemmelus, but I'm a little worried he's going to go full Blind Seer on us and just see through our whole facade.

Is there any way we could make ourselves less visually intimidating to the Arlanders? Y'know, replicating more formal garb similar to Flints, or something by his suggestion. Everything counts.

I know this has been brought up before but i feel like it needs to be addressed again.

The chaos/shadow core is massive and round, forming a sphere.

Venia is supposedly a flat pane floating in space.

These two do not add up.
>>
You remember a bit from Donovan's little tour enough to know what direction to go - you could see Hemmelus's tower from the roof. You ask a few servants for directions along the way; everything looks the same in the keep.

Eventually, you reach the door that - judging from the view of a nearby window - leads into the sage's tower. You rap your hand on the wood.

After a moment, there's a flicker of Wind. The door swings open. You hear the old man's distant voice shout down to you. "Come in!"

You enter the round tower.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YD7H8NUepc

It's a complete mess. Books are strewn everywhere - some in stacks, others in piles, half-open. Most of them have many pages marked with strips of cloth or feathers enough to make them look like stuffed animals. The central desk is the only relatively clear space. White floating lights keep the space brilliantly lit.

A circular stair of solid iron leads up in the center of the room, and you begin to scale it, keeping an arm on the railing. You emerge in the next floor to a hazy room half-filled with a strange purple fog. An ugly scent assails you - it smells vaguely of fish. There are as many tables in this room as below, but they're filled with obscure glassware and intricate apparatuses of which you can only guess the function.

You continue to climb the stair to the following floor. There's one more floor above that, but you've found your quarry.

Hemmelus is seated next to you, in a strange, floating chair. It has no legs, and is just apparently a marble half-circle. Arranged around the room are dozens of mirrors. Some are small round, personal mirrors; others more ornate, like you'd see in the upper hallways of the keep. One is an incredible stretch of reflective glass that reaches from floor to ceiling, embroidered with a golden frame.

I made that something like 50 threads ago because I was tired of losing the country borders every time I looked somewhere else on the map.
It's just for convenience sake.

Besides, it's not like Kan-Abar will be keeping that territory.
>>
>>29862628
It also doesn't add up that there's a sphere of order around the source of mana in Venia in the first place, too. Erebus put the shell there... but was that to contain a big ball of chaos in the first place, or did it come from somewhere/someone else?
>>
Hemmelus's chair rotates to face you. "John Nyx. I'd thought you might visit me." He rubs the bridge of his nose. "You know, it's rather hard to see you. But that's how I knew it was you."

"Hard to see me?"

Hemmelus folds his hands and smiles. "In a manner of speaking. I can't see anymore." He points at his opaque white eyes. "But after years of honing my senses, I can see mana...well, it's more like the echoes of mana. In a way, I hear with my sight. I hear magic."

"...I see."

"Shadow mages, however, have a habit of hiding themselves. They're very quiet. They do not disturb the flow." He tilts his head toward you. "Though, that's what gave you away, in this case."

"I suppose I should take that as a compliment."

"Yes, indeed. I haven't met anyone as quiet as you in a long time."

Order = solid = matter

Chaos = energy = light

The "Shadow" of Shadow Quest was never referring to the shadow elemental we're playing.

The shadow is Venia itself. The flat plane in space is the shadow of the projection created by the ball of chaos being blocked by order.

Venia is a mix of Order and Chaos, and ironically, this makes it neither as this combination creates through its negation.

"Trade? For what?"

"Information," Hemmelus says. "For each question you ask, I shall ask one as well. For each question I ask, you may ask one of me. How does that sound?"

"...I'd ask you why we're doing to speak in this manner, but I suppose that would constitute a question."

Hemmelus might be the one behind the shel'kath.

It's draining Donovan's ability to use light magic. Hemmelus is powerful in all the greater elements, including light. The shel'kath might be the reason why. He could be stealing magic from a bunch of people in order to give him all that power.

"The only other mage like that I know of is - well, don't know if you've heard of him. His name's Taremtis. He lives out in Tarun Gakth, now, amongst some orcs. He's quite insane."

"I found that out firsthand."

"Really?! Indeed! What happened?"

"That's another question."

Hemmelus waves a hand. "Oh, fine, you get two once it's your turn. I haven't been in contact with that psychopath in years! I assume this is when you were with Donovan?"

What do you tell Hemmelus about the time you met Taremtis?

(note: that's when he prophesied that without you, Obis was sure to die if he tried to retake his throne)

"Well," you say, "who is as quiet as me?"

Hemmelus gives you a small smile. "You would know her as the Black Lady."

You pause at that for a time. Hemmelus keeps his mysterious smile.

"...well, one of the major reasons I came to you was to ask this," you say. "What do you think about the chances for our alliance? I've put a lot of time and effort in to bring these people together."

"Oh, slim to none," Hemmelus says. "You see, as long as Arcturis feels he can lean on the Empire, he'll snub you as the day is long. Though..."

"Yes?"

"You've won over Donovan," Hemmelus says. "And he has influence now, though he hasn't yet realized it. Strong influence, and great popular support. Arcturis is as stone - he will not budge - but Donovan may be able to pull some of the other knights and lords onto your side. Of course, that will threaten Arcturis's authority, at a time when he is readying to shift power to Gerald.

"If I can't get him on my side, then I don't care too much about upsetting him."

>con't
>>
"Ah," Hemmelus says. "You might be a mage of some aptitude, but you aren't a politician. And I mean that as a compliment." Hemmelus places the tips of his fingers together. "The Lord of Arland derives his authority and power from the loyalty and contributions of his landed lords. The Flint family has maintained stability because they've maintained, for the most part, the allegiance of the lords and the faith of the people. If Donovan undermines that to gain you allies, the alliance is strengthened, but there instead is made a split amongst the lords themselves. Some siding with Donovan, others remaining with his father, and Gerald."

"...that sounds bad."

"It wouldn't be good, I tell you that. And there's enough friction between these brothers as it is. If Gerald thinks Donovan is trying to edge him out, ride the wave of the Demonslayer, as it were..." Hemmelus sighs. "Arland cannot involve itself in your alliance without sacrificing something."

"But the alternative - if we lose because they aren't there, we all lose," you say.

"I agree. But you try advising a man as stubborn as a boulder for a few years!" He jabs a finger in your general direction. "You'd be a bit cynical about it, I'd wager."

It looks like our best bet is to just get as many of the nobles as possible on our side then.

Ideally we get Gerald on our side, then. Would certainly make handling the lords and knights easier.
Which means communicating clearly that Donovan is not interested in taking any power or influence here in Arland, which is true enough. I expect some hard feelings after that duel, but Gerald might also gain some respect for his bumbling brother that we can capitalize on.

The problem with this is how do you get the Ring City to back off from Arland? The only thing that I can think of is bringing up the slavery issue and hoping that scares Arland out of the mindset of relying on them.

We might also be able to bring up them trying to steal the Staff of Winds from Xile because they don't want a rightful heirloom of Arland to be in anyone but theirs hands but that's tricky since delegates from the Ring City will be coming and that will heavily tip them off about Lucifer's fate.

>>
>>29865549

>>
>>29865469
If we can undermine Arcturus's favor with the nobles by winning them over to Donovan's side and getting enough majority approval for an alliance with the Black Lady in time, Ring City might simply withdraw their support simply for association with Vampira.

Hell, if we can time BL's arrival with the Ring City delegates arrival and make it look like Vampira's already part of our alliance we can maybe get Ring City to withdraw their support from the table before negotiations even begin.

You consider the situation. It's a conundrum - a conundrum indeed. With the Empire's backing, Arcturis is simply too confident to buy into anything that has to do with Yi Fang.

"...what would it take to show Arcturis that he can't rely on the Empire - that Sandalphon doesn't have his best interests at heart? That he must act?"

Hemmelus folds his arms. "I don't know. But John - they've been allies since Arland's founding, standing together against Archon, and then Vampiria. They're as close as two countries can be."

"What if Sandalphon was trying to use the war to annex Arland and end its autonomy?"

Hemmelus raises an eyebrow. "That's quite an accusation."

"Yes, it is."

"Assuming that was the case, you would need proof," Hemmelus says. "And you don't have that, do you?"

"...not yet I don't."

"I'd be very careful if I were you."

"Do you disagree?"

"...Sandalphon takes great liberties with his authority," Hemmelus says. "I disagree with many of his choices, but I believe he has the best interests of the world at heart. And I do not believe he would be stupid enough to risk alienating his staunchest ally." Hemmelus brings his hands together. "Now, I have another question for you."

okay the key points:
The 'curse' is a parasite
Yi Fang was identified by the prophecy as the one who could help
Fang revealed it takes energy from the victim and feeds it to a "source"

It has been noted Donovan is EXCEPTIONALLY LIGHT POWERFUL, and that if he wasn't, then the parasite would've sucked him dry

This means it is likely the perp is very good at light magic

it also means that the perp must've been close to Flint. It is very likely he was close to keep an eye on him

We then freak the fuck out because this guy is powerful nah, not really
>>
>>29866387
>Yi Fang was identified by the prophecy as the one who could help

The prophecy identified three potential ways for this to go
>>
Are you dead SM?
>>
>>29866387
Black Lady and Hecate were also both noted as being able to help, according to Taremtis.
>>
>>29866387
it's possible that it converts the light magic into someother form or just feeds the users own magic.

doesn't hve to be light
>>
>>29866405
shhhhhhhhh
because telling him there were alternatives doesn't sound bad to him at all

going to the great manipulator for help when there were alternatives
>>
>>29866435
The alternatives were seek the Staff of Winds, find Yi Fang, and what? Because those first two are heavily related to each other.
>>
Am I the only one that thinks Hemmelus just got twice as suspicious? Especially considering that the prophecies never mentioned him in any regard whatsoever?
>>
>>29866462
I'll just paste the text.
=====
Flint licks his lips, then nods to himself. "...how can I be rid of the parasite on my soul?"
"There are many ways," Taremtis says. "None preserve all those for whom you care. Seek the lich with the young girl. Or, seek the aid of the Black Lady. Or, find and use the four keys. In any case, you must return home to end your curse."
>>
>>29866412

Somehow this turned into a long moment. Few more minutes
>>
>>29866519
So basically we went with the one that was actually more possible or at least quicker than the others.
>>
>>29866519

Taremtis is basically saying that each of the three options leads to a different set of Flint family deaths.

But which deaths are the deserved ones?

Let's see what Hemmelus has to say about this shit
>>
>>29866519
... I just realized all three are practically possible at this point

we just need the lightning key
>>
>>29866580
>lightning
you mean wind
>>
>>29866519
...Aaaaand Hemmelus and Mathhel are pretty much the only two living people close to him other than Auriel and ourselves (and abby) that fall under "all those for whom you care," the first two being the only ones native to Arland.
That is of course unless "all those for who you care" extends to all of Arland itself, in which case double shit.
>>
>>29866558
IT was certainly the most apparent option at the time, though considering what we know now of Melody I think she'd have been amicable enough to helping us.

I don't know how he expected us to do Hecate when we have to come to Arland and bargain for the Wind key, or if that was going to be an intentional back-and-forth between Jacob's Field and Arland several times.

"What do you know about the curse?"

Hemmelus shakes his head. "It's been one of my main projects since Donovan was five years old. He seemed promising - lightborn, he took after his mother, rather than his father - but promising nonetheless. When he was five, the curse struck."

"What happened?"

"I have no idea," Hemmelus said. "I was in my tower that day, listening to magic." He waves at his mirrors. "Arcturis took his lads out to the Silent Hills, then went to the cathedral for evening mass - a usual day for them, at the time. That was when their mother was still alive, and they still went to mass. And then, when he came back - the curse was upon him."

"That's it?" you ask.

"Yes," Hemmelus says. "I inquired after that day from both his parents, until Arcturis was sick of recounting it to me. It wasn't there, and then it was there. And I heard it 0 that sound - as soon as they entered the castle town. It took me some time to learn how to block it out. But that's when Donovan's troubles started."

"Troubles?"

"I'm sure you know," Hemmelus said. "It's like...cursed luck, in all he does, especially around others. The boy couldn't even express himself to Megan." Hemmelus sighs. "I taught them both. Do you know what it was like, watching Donovan struggle in the same room as her, day after day? And I couldn't say what he needed to say in his place. He would have never forgiven me. He used to come to me at night, and I'd give him advice, the words, what to do...though, heh, it's been a while since I've had to chase skirts. But he could never put it into practice.

"The worst part is, Megan loved him back, I could see it, plain as day! If he'd asked, she would have said yes. She was waiting for him." He shakes his head. "He - Donovan - he didn't see, he didn't understand. He only saw himself as a screwup. But, in a way, he was wonderful - incredibly so. The whole castle always loved Donovan. He remembered the names of servants, of the lower knights that the other brothers always glossed over. He was a loveable, bumbling fool. It was the small things." Hemmelus smiles. "Helping a maid carry laundry. He cleaned his own room, you know, obsessively. He told me it was so they didn't have to work as hard. He used to bring me injured animals, practically on the week. And he had this insistency about him...he practiced what little magic he could muster until after dark, until he couldn't see his hands, and the only light was that pathetic little light spell he was able to manage. Trying his hardest to hit the targets with a sword, or a bow and arrow. And he always fell, and scraped himself up, but he always stood up again. There was something about his determination, no matter how much he was knocked down, no matter how many times he failed - he just kept going. And that's what Megan loved. It's what we all loved. His insistent kindness. The way he dealt with life. It made us better people. We were better for him."

>con't
>>
Hemmelus takes a breath, and heaves a heavier sigh. "...my apologies. Just an old man rambling."

"...not at all. It's nice to hear about my friend from someone that knew him when I didn't."

Hemmelus smiles vaguely, nods. "Hmm. I suppose it might be. But only if he asked for her hand!" He smacks his palm on his chair. "And then that bastard Gerald snatched her up. I suspect...I suspect..." He trails off. "No. I know. Megan was certainly accomplished enough to be a wife for the Lord of Arland, but I know he did it in part because he knew how Donovan felt about her. He couldn't stand seeing her attention on someone else. And then..." Hemmelus's face darkens. "That was the straw that broke the camel's back. Donovan could take anything Gerald could give him - anything but that. He left before the wedding. Megan...she cried, when she said the words. Everyone, Gerald included, assumed it was joy. Everyone else...the people that loved him...they knew better. I knew better. I should have done something. I should have said something!

"...and then he left. Just like that. To restore and rebuild Aeolus's order. But we all knew it was just an excuse. But I couldn't stop him. His father was virtually glad to see him go, so see the family embarrassment take care of itself. And I didn't have the heart.

Hemmelus puts his hands on his face, hiding the pain that has crept onto his features. He bows in his chair. "...I ask, if you are his friend, to help me help him. It is the only forgiveness I can earn from that poor boy, though he doesn't even know I need it."

"I'm already at your service," you say. "I began to travel with Donovan to help him do just that. I've seen it hurt him...I've seen it cut him. I won't stand for it any longer."

Hemmelus rises up straight in his chair. "And neither will I!"

"I think you're right," you say. "It effects him more deeply when people are around him. That's one of the first times I saw it happen - he was trying to convince a group of people in Jacob's Field of something important, and it...it stopped him. It just stopped him from speaking."

"Which...reminds me," he says. "How did you know he had a curse? That was another reason I had such trouble. No one believed me. Angels, other mages, even Arcturis, a powerful mage in his own right, couldn't sense the curse. Only me - only I could hear it. They wrote it off on my doting, or my age, or just something wrong with my 'hearing' spell." He makes a frown. "It isn't even a spell. Ignorant fools."

"I know about it, because I can see it, Hemmelus," you say. "A demon. It's a demon like a rattlesnake, wrapped around his soul, sucking away his mana - his energy. It takes something vital from him, and it whisks it away."

"What? How? How did you detect it?"

You shrug. "I didn't do anything special. I was just able to see it. Maybe it has something to do with my knack for magic."

"Yes, perhaps. Go on."

"It moves...it drains him, when he tries to do things. And I saw that it had a tail - a tail that led back to the south. We planned on following it, but...we got sidetracked."

Hemmelus nods. "By things like Demon Lords and angels that have lost their wings, I assume."

"Indeed."

You feel something coming - Spirit. You'd recognize that soul from a mile away.

"Oh, my," Hemmelus says. "It appears we have a guest." Hemmelus leans around you. "Come on up, Archmage!"

"I'd say that this is a fortunate coincidence, but I can't imagine his timing is anything but deliberate," you say to Hemmelus.

"Really? Does this have to do with what you mentioned earlier?"

"Fang can see the demon as well - and he knows much more about it than I do."

The steps on the metal stairs begin to clang louder. The pair of you fall silent as you wait for him to arrive.

He takes the final stair in stride, glances your way briefly, then looks at Hemmelus. "Hemmelus. I thought I'd pay the only person in the castle that has any idea of what they're doing a visit."

"Well, I don't know," Hemmelus says. "John here seems to have a good head on his shoulders."

Fang smiles his evil smile. "He doesn't count as a person."

"...so, why are you really here?"

"To fill you in," Fang says. He looks at you. "I assume you've told him about the shel'kath?"

"Is that what it's called?" Hemmelus asks. "I can't properly see it, as you two apparently can."

"John here simply has the talent," Fang says. "I use a spell. I've dealt with it before."

"In what capacity?"

"An associate was plagued by it," Fang says. "The perpetrators got away by obscuring the source of the tail that the shel'kath leaves behind, tricking us into hunting down an innocent. This entire thing is extremely specialized magic - the shel'kath upon the Flint runt is actually only half of the demon itself. The other half is where what is being drained is being dumped off."

>con't
>>
"I see," Hemmelus says. "And you mean to imply..."

"The same people that did it the first time, are responsible this time," Fang finishes.

"...John mentioned a tail, leading to the south. A way to track it?"

"Correct," Fang says. "The tail led straight to Dobshire, into the castle town. Which means that the source is here, right now. But they don't know we're looking for them, and they certainly don't believe I'd help one of the Flints."

"Ah," Hemmelus says. "The true motive is revealed. You want some revenge of your own. But that doesn't seem quite enough to drive the Archmage to - as you said - help the family that stands against him."

"Your powers of observation are exceeded only by the length of your beard," Fang says. "I owe John a favor. He requested my assistance in the matter."

Hemmelus gives you a look. "You couldn't have done anything good to have earned a favor from this man."

"...well," you say, remembering the time you infiltrated the Cheung manor, "it wasn't bad."

"It's neither here nor there," Fang says. "More importantly, the trail is magically obscured within the confines of the castle town. However, this only occurs at a certain distance - whoever made the spell left a serious flaw in its ability to conceal. By taking the knight to three locations on the edge of Dobshire, we should be able to triangulate the position of the other end of the shel'kath - assuming it's still within the city."

"I see," Hemmelus says. "How can I help?"

"I want you with me," Fang says. "You're a sensitive mage. You'll be able to help pinpoint things with greater accuracy." He looks at you. "You'll be in the city. Once we figure out the location, you'll move in to investigate." He smiles at you. "You are rather sneaky, after all."

>con't
>>
"...when?" you ask.

"Tonight, after the dinner. Be ready." Fang promptly turns and marches down the stairs. "I want to be done with this foolishness as soon as possible."

"What can we expect on the other side?" you shout down after him. "A person?"

<I've no idea,> Fang projects back to you and Hemmelus. <But I'm quite curious as to what they're using that power for...and who they are.>

Hemmelus gives you a grave look. "There's a limited number of power players in the world, John. If it's not us, and it's not Fang...that leaves three."

"Three?"

"Kan-Abar. Vampiria. And the Ring City. I think we can rule out Vampiria."

You look at Hemmelus askance. "...why would the Sage of the Four Elements rule out Vampiria, the enemy of the entire south?"

"Because the Black Lady doesn't seek war," he says confidently. "I'm sure of it."

Do you believe in your convictions so strongly that you will be willing to raise your voice to those with their deeply-ingrained prejudices to say that the Shadow truly can strive to be a force for good?"

Don't talk about her specifically with Fang around, no. Parlay it into a general backing of "shadow isn't always evil", and let that ride when Melody shows up in the flesh later on.

"My respect for you grows, Hemmelus," you say. "You're very open-minded."

"I like to think so," he says.

"Do you think you could convince others of that?" you ask.

"Of the lady not seeking war? Well...it's not a subject you can just bring up without damn good reason, so I've never really tried."

"She could make a powerful ally," you say. "Enough to tip the scales in the war."

"...she might, at that," he says, "but any alliance between the Black Lady and Arland - or the Empire - would be nigh impossible. And simply contacting her would be a risk."

What do you say now?

"I've seen stranger things happen lately, see you at dinner?"

"True, but she could just as easily be what we need at a time like this. I suppose there isn't anything beyond the loss of Ring City's support that would make that risk acceptable, is there?"

You smile at him. It comes automatically - a small, confident smile that tells him you know something, and he doesn't. You've found it rather frustrating to be on the other side of that kind of smile, but now that you're the one making it - well, you could get used to it.

"...I'm going to assume," Hemmelus says, "that the conversation we had was all hypotheticals. Because I would truly not enjoy convincing Lord Arcturis Flint that the Black Lady wouldn't love to kill him and drink the blood from his corpse." He sits back in his chair. "Now then, I think I've had enough excitement for now."

"The night is young."

Hemmelus groans slightly. "I'm getting to old for this nonsense. This is why I play hermit and sit in my tower. But John."

He inspects you with a serious look. "Young fools always come along and think they can do anything and everything. I've seen it before. And now I'm seeing it again. Be careful when you throw the weight of magic and armies about - because from a distance, they are numbers, but up close...it's families you're hurting. Sons of mothers that are dying. I feel your confidence...and your uncertainty. You strike boldly, but so much is still undecided. Be careful, John. For the sake of the elements, be careful."

"...I will be."

"That's good. Now...we can talk more later. I suppose I have to put on something presentable for the dinner."

"Thank you for your help, Hemmelus. It was a pleasure."

"Likewise. I'll see you shortly."

You turn, and begin to walk down the stairs.

TO BE CONTINUED

Going straight to bed. Everyone have a good night.

I expect the next thread to be either Friday night or Saturday, during the day. I'm trying to build somewhat of a schedule going forward, but we'll see. I'm kinda used to running whenever the hell I feel like it.

See the twitter for updates. Thread is archived. Etc.

Thanks, SM.

You've been in top form since you've been back. Very emotional stuff in these last 2 threads.

We've got a few years on you, I'm afraid.

The exchange between us and Flint at the beginning of the thread made me wonder what would've happened if we had taken a more feminine persona when we first met him.

Love triangle with Flint and Auriel? Lesbians with Abby? Motheru-Daughteru relationship with Abby?

Thanks for the thread! Good night, SM.

Awesome thread SM, will continue stalking your twitter for more.

Things just keep getting more and more interesting.

And dangerous.
And deadly.
And risky.
Ah, shit.

Well we've seen plenty of court dress to replicate so I hope we'll be good.

We certainly can't wear that atrocious hat to the dinner table, of course.
AND we need to make sure not to consume the entire table. Hopefully Duke Vellik will refrain from telling THAT story.

We'll just pick the fanciest outfit in the room and replicate it.

We didn't decide on a gender until the Farmer John vision decided for us. Being female was never a serious possibility.
