So! winter storm going on- translated for everyone not in the area, that basically means it's balls cold and there's freezing rain. While I don't expect this to become an issue at all, if I stop posting somewhere along the way, it's safe to assume the internet is down for some reason or other and there's riots and looting and pillaging and whatnot all commensurate with the end of the world as we know it.

Archives here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989

and the character sheet is... somewhere and out of date, haha. If you want to jump in, ask in the thread, If one of the guys doesn't help out, i will.

++

“This runway sucks all that is ass.” You state to Mav, walking down one side of it, illuminated by the lights and the setting sun. “Too narrow and there's no room for error.”

“You're being a colossal baby.” She says, picking up a pebble and flinging it out to sea with a brutal side-arm toss. “Like this is worse than a carrier deck.”

“There's no catapult and no wires.” You point out. “And there's almost no room for error at MTOW, let alone if we try to land heavy. There's no reversers on the Wyvern, and no drouge.” You shake your head. “You witches have it easy.”

Mav snorts. “Yeah, sure we do. Instead of wrecking a jet, birdstrike can kill us, if an engine fails, it can take a leg with it, and oh, yeah, you get to walk around in your panties all day and just have to deal with everyone mentally undressing you the rest of the way.”

“Oh don't bullshit me.” You say, laughing at the last point. “You like that last one just fine.”

1/3 (I think)
>>
She grins. “Yeah, maybe. We got into a squadron with incredibly nice asses.” She looks over at you. “How did that one work out?”

You laugh and shrug, bending to pick up another small pebble- FOD, while important for witches, is nowhere near the same threat to them and their procedures to control it aren't that great. You've done three or four walks with the ground crews, and each time, you've found something.

“Luck?” You say, neatly matching her throw- there's not much point in competing with her, you'll end up winning but it's just as likely you'll throw your shoulder out doing it.

She chuckles. “Yeah, sure, and that's why you're having such a miserable time with Katya?”

You shake your head. “I have no idea what's up with her. First she's all over me, now it's like she can't even stand to be in the same room.”

“Pfft. You're being dramatic.” Mav says. “Besides, it's a defense mechanism. You know that.”

“It- what?” You ask, stopping.

She stops two steps beyond you and turns halfway to face you. “C'mon, we've seen this before. Penny Benjamin? One of us takes a tumble, suddenly she hates me?”

“Yeah but-” You protest, remembering the incident. Penny was witch who flew briefly with the unit before being transferred out, less than six weeks after her assignment. She and Mav had had a fling, of sorts, until there'd been a training accident and Penny had ridden a parachute into a swamp. She'd been flying with Mav at the time, who'd called in the mayday, and while Penny wasn't hurt badly, just a few scratches and bruises, she avoided Mav the entire rest of her time with the squadron.

2/3
>>
Mav shakes her head. “No, but nothing. Hell, Frank, think about it. First you're some invincible, infallable knight in shining armor, then bam, you crash a tomcat with her in the back and she ends up with a leg snapped like a Popsicle stick.”

She shrugs. “So now her image of you is all jacked up and she doesn't know how to handle the concept that maybe you aren't perfect.”

“But-” You protest, and she shakes her head again.

“But nothing, aviator. Look here, she's already said she wasn't really approachable back in the USSR. War hero grandmother, important family, all that. Of course she doesn't know how to handle a boyfriend, and you ain't exactly the best with girls, neither.” She says, her accent becoming more pronounced.

“I'm perfectly fine with females.” You state.

Mav laughs. “Frank, you're a fighter pilot. Y'all ain't exactly noted for being the smoothest operators ever.”

You pause, then nod. “Hey baby, I'm a pilot?”

She laughs again. “It works about as well as hey baby, I'm a witch.” She says. “Great for one nighters, godawful for anything approaching a lasting relationship.”

“So what do you think I should do?” You ask.

3/4(oops)
>>
She shrugs. “I think you're asking the wrong person. Shit, if I knew Katya, Slider, and Ice were getting all hot and bothered about me I'd be clearing everyone out of my room to take advantage of it.” She grins. “Shit, if I'd thought I had a chance, I'd be chasing Ice all over the place. I bet she's a freak, man, look at her.”

You laugh and shake your head. “I don't see that going over so well.”

She echos your laugh, nodding. “Probably not, but it's a nice thought. Then again, man, have you seen Slider's hips? Cripes. And Katya...” She bites her lip. “Mmmmhhhh.”

“So what would you do?” You ask.

She shakes her head. “I'm not exactly the best person to ask, here.” She says. “You know that. Look, if it were me, I'd sit down with Katya, and try to straighten things out.”

“Of course,” She continues, “If you want to talk, you'd best hurry, she's getting ready to leave for Dunottar for a few days to greet the incoming Russian matron and her aggressor witch.”

“Russian- aren't we still at war with them?” You ask. “I mean, there's Putin's guys, I know, but..”

She nods. “That's who these are. The matron is one he's vouching for, and the witch is too. He said he's known both of them quite a while.”

“Well, wonderful.” You say.

[x] “Where's she at? We should probably hammer this out before she goes.”

“So where's she at?” You ask, noting that you two have reached the end of the runway.

Mav shrugs. “I dunno- oh, wait. No, I actually do know.” She says, checking her watch. “She's probably down in the hangar, getting her shit loaded. She's flying up on a RAF chopper, I think it was.”

“Then why would she be down there?” You ask.

“'Cos, in her words, she was anxious to get this foolishness over with.” She says, with another shrug.

You snort. “I take it she's not too fond of being sent out as a greeting party? Why didn't they just come here anyway? All the other ones did.”

Mav shrugs a third time. “I really don't know. Something with a traditional greeting to the witches of Scotland or some shit, hell Frank, why are you asking me?”

“Cos you're here?” You say.

“Pfft, yeah. You used that excuse for everything and you'd have known what tattoos I have. Too late now though, sucker!” She says with a laugh.

“Damn, really?” you say, feigning disappointment.

“Yes, really. Shit, you think I want to have to deal those ravening harpies thinking I stole their man or some shit? Damn, Frank, I thought we were friends!”

You laugh at that, shaking your head. The two of you walk into the hangar built in under the castle from the open door to the tarmac.

Yeah, if Putin sent anyone else she'd kill them and wear their skin just for the chance to get close to Frank again.
>>
Inside, it'd be cramped with even a few more jets- there's been serious talk of keeping your wyverns in their 'carrier' configuration, with wings folded and only opened up out on the tarmac, which is significantly bigger. You've noticed the place is pretty far removed from most land hangars you've been in as well- more memorabilia, it's half hangar, half museum. You noticed the propellers- curtiss constant-speed airscrews, you're told, mounted to the wall, a photo in between them. You keep meaning to go get a look at it, but you've always been sidetracked. There's a series of Strikers along the back- you've identified P-51s, Me-109s, and a whole host of other wartime models, all of them, you're told, maintained to perfect working order and brought out occasionally for memorial flights.

There's a crew around your fighter- yours has been tagged the unofficial testbed, and most of the things mounted to it are later mounted to the twin's jet after some work. Downtuning, Clarissa called it- things that work for Merlin without a hiccup, she can barely power. They've been discussing installing a way to split the load between her and her sister, and you hope they can pull it off- your jets would be nigh unstoppable if they could.

Mav taps you on the arm and motions that she's going to go join the group around your jet, leaving you to nod and find Katya, adjusting her bag for flight across her back. Her bag isn't quite packed full, but it's certainly more than you'd be taking for a few days.

“Hello, Frank.” She greets, sounding nice enough. “What brings you down here? Come to say goodbye?”

“It's hardly goodbye.” You say. “You're only going to be gone a day or two, aren't you?”

She shrugs. “That is the plan, yes. We are at war, though, and things can happen.”

> Say what?

You look around to make sure no one's in earshot- the nearest person is one of the crew, working on something in the small space between your jet exhausts- you're not sure what, since you're pretty sure that's just empty space, but you'll ask later.

“We need to talk, then. About California. And what happened with the Tomcat.” You say, Stepping closer and dropping your voice.

She starts, and you hear an intake of breath- but she nods. “Y-yes. I did not think you were going to bring that up. But not here, come. Follow me.”

There's a series of offices cut into the rock walls along the sides of the hangar, and one of them- unoccupied, even devoid of furniture, serves as a convenient spot for some privacy.

You both start at the same time, then stop awkwardly. She motions for you to go ahead.

“Listen, I'm sorry.” You say. “I should have stuck with it on the ground, and I should have never taken mav up on her offer. It was stupid of me and it got you hurt.”

She smiles sadly, shaking her head. “I do not think you owe me an apology.” She says. “You were doing as your instinct demanded. It is just...” She pauses and shakes her head again. “It is just that it made me realize you were not who I thought you were. This is not a bad thing, and it is not your fault.” She adds, hastily. “But...”

“But you've been acting like it is.” You state. “If I'd have known it would cost me this...”

“You would have done what differently?” She says. “Allowed it to be Tabitha? Perhaps told us no? No one had any reason to suspect anything until then. It is just...”

She pauses, wrapping her arms around herself. “Samantha is right. There is something there. I... felt it. It was terrifying. How she can- you can- “ She shakes her head. “It is not natural. We crashed because I was afraid, not because of anything you did.”

“Oh no. None of that shit.” You state. “Look, we've all accepted there's something going on, yeah, ok. But don't you start blaming yourself for something you didn't do. It was my aircraft, it was my responsibility. I crashed, you got caught in it.”

“If I had been Samantha, we would not have crashed.” She says. “We crashed because you are used to a level of support I cannot give. I do not think any witch other than her can, but that is not the point. It is not your fault because you cannot control yourself the same way we can. You were looking for support that just wasn't there, Frank.”

“I flew the colonel's Corsair just fine.” you point out. “And that thing is a single seat prop plane that's like a horse-drawn cart compared to my jet. And I didn't have problem number one in that thing, and-” You state, carrying over her attempt to protest- “And I didn't have a single problem when I was flying with Orion or anywhere else, even with Merlin, up till what? Tanana?”

She shrugs. “There is much we do not know.” She says, simply. “Yours and hers are unique talents. Not even the oldest records show anything like them. That is why we are here.”

“So I keep hearing.” You state, drily. “But that's not the issue at hand, Katya.”

She shakes her head. “I know this. I- I am sorry, Frank. I have been behaving poorly. Perhaps we should go see London when we get the chance? Just you and I?”

Although at this point we really should stop stringing the witches around. It was kind of reasonable at first to hold to the idea of waiting until the war ended, but he's not stupid. He knows three of the Witches want him. If Katya still wants to pursue a relationship then I think at this point we kind of owe her a straight yes or no.

If yes, then we put the shipping behind us and let Ice and Slider move on; if no, then we can pursue Ice or Slider and let Katya move on. But remaining indecisive isn't really tenable anymore except as harem comedy and it's getting old.

[x] “I'd like that, yeah.”

You nod, venturing a smile. “I'd like that, yeah.” You say.

She nods. “It will have to be later though,” She says, opening the door and motioning you out.

“I am not looking forward to this. Ah, the difficulty in being the only Russian witch close to you and Samantha.” She laughs. “I expect to be doing nothing but answering questions.”

“That bad, huh?” You ask, chuckling.

“Well, no, and I am hoping they will have mail for me, but I am still not looking forward to this.” She says. “But I have been out of contact for a long time, and I suspect there will be many questions.” She glances sideways at you. “Especially about the nature of our friendship.”

You grin. “Well, I am catnip on legs....”

She laughs. “Indeed. That is why I plan to tell them I am carrying your child.”

You have to work to not swallow your tongue. “You what?” You manage to croak out after a second.

Well, it will likely be extremely effective.
>>
She laughs. “It is a joke, yes? I was talking to Tabitha and Rachel, Rachel suggested it.” she says. “I would not have thought of it otherwise.”

“Right.” You say, noting that it does sound like something she or Mav would say. “So what-”

“I will tell them that we are close friends, and that is that.” She says. “I know nothing more about the nature of you and Samantha than they do,.”

The thudding of rotor blades carries over the noise of the hangar- outside, in the evening light, you can see a RAF Puma flaring gently for a landing on the tarmac.

“I suppose that is my flight.” Katya says, turning to you. “I will see you in a few days, Frank. Perhaps We can go to London in a week or two? I would like to see Trafalgar square.”

You nod. “Sounds like a plan.”

You watch her walk out to the chopper- you're about to turn around when you're hit from behind by an incredible concussive force.

“Hi Frank!” your sister screams from atop your back. “What were you and Katya doooooing huh? Huh huh huh? I bet it was lewd was it lewd? Man I'd lewd her. Look at that butt!”

[x] Jessica! Mom raised you better.

“Jessica!” You say, gathering your arms under you and pushing up- she seated fairly far back, enough so that you can still manage a push up- “Mom raised you better. And besides, Slider has a better tail.”

“Hmmm, true. True.” She says, sounding almost human. “But Katya has better hips.”

You laugh, shifting your weight and rolling, forcing Jessica to either abandon her seat or get crushed. She wisely moves. “Like hell she does. Anyway. What do you want, squirt?”

“Can't I just come see my favorite big brother?” She asks, pouting. “Do I always want something?”

You think for a second, then nod. “Yeah, you pretty much do. What do you want?”

“You're no fun. Tabby wanted me to make sure you were ok and had a witch with you and sent me because she said she had a headache and a lot of work to catch up on and I should go find you instead of trying to sneak more coffee out of people and talking to her because she was busy. Patty said you were down here talking to Katya and I think she thinks you were doing something dirty too but she didn't seem so sure and you weren't were you?”

“No.” You respond. “We were just talking, that's all.”

“Well that's no fun.” Jessica says. “But anyway you're here and I think Katsumi was on her way down and hey is that Samantha? Hi Samantha!”

Merlin- who was just walking around the nosewheel of the wyvern with one of the striker techs, stops in her tracks and looks straight at you two. “Oh. H-hi Jessica. Hi F-frank.” She says, taking a slow step back around the wheel. “I-I uh... I'm busy s-so I c-can't talk....”

You'd be able to tell she was lying, even without the blush.

Well, it is a bit of a mood swing, having a serious fucking conversation and then our sister rolls in and is like "DID YOU BANG, DIDYA DIDYA?".

I mean, if being how she is keeps her from being a psychological wreck, that would be one thing, but at some point the girl may need to put on her warface. Personally, I do not feel that time is right now, so jokes about Slider are good. The problem is that Jessica is like this 100% of the time, as far as we know.

Konstantina is good and pretty witch, and Frank loves her forever. One day, Frank patted Konstantina on head, and they had all the babies forever. Socialism overtakes pathetic captalist strongholds worldwide, and we hold hands on your 4th of July as symbol of forever love.

>>
>>29863128

I don't think our callsign has been mentioned narratively in a while. Nor, I think, do people frequently call us "Wardog" either.

Personally, I think that while it was cool and darkly humorous when we got right out of the hospital, Frank's really avoided mentioning Tanana like that since we got back, probably because we saw how bad it tore up the squadron. They might not appreciate it if we bandied the event about so lightly, even if Frank is pretty over it (specifically. I understand there's still general anxiety about dying in a horrible firey wreck).

Now that we're gonna end up dealing with a bunch of matrons, we could probably start saying we owe our amazing powers to being the risen dead.

Or being one with the machine spirits, since we're like, minimum 1% Tomcat now.

When there's no more room in BOUNCE Heaven, Revenant shall fly the sky.

[x] Oh no. No no. No secrets between crew.

You look at Jessica, who grins. You nod- then catch her by the collar.

“Behave.” You warn. “This is important. Behave or you will regret it.”

“Ooh, whatcha gonna dooooo?” Jessica practically sneers- it's always a challenge with her.

“Do you want to find out?” You ask, looking at her with cold, dead eyes.

You stare at her long enough she flinches, then breaks eye contact. “N-no. Sorry Frank, I'll behave, I promise.”

“Good.” you say with a nod, blinking.

“Oh Merllllinnnnnn....” You say, casually walking around the nose of the jet, your sister trailing slightly behind. “So, whatcha working on?” You ask, noting she's standing awful close to a guy in the IJN's Camo- jetai, you think they call it.

She spins around with a squeak, the blush evident on her face. “W-well, um... w-we were i-installing new jets a-all day a-and did a-a lot of work on the a-avionics and p-putting in a new canopy a-and some n-new sensors a-and working on the com-computer a-and....”

“Sounds like a lot of work.” You say, impressed. Even for a full crew, that's easily a week's worth of work.

“N-not really, Ke- er, ah, K-katsumi's striker t-tech was a-a lot of help and...” She stammers. “I-I can show you t-tomorrow?” She says, kind of hopefully.

“Well, I'm pretty busy tomorrow, and I'd like to get a walk around sooner, rather than later.” You say. “Especially with new jets in there. What's new? And You're Katsumi's striker tech, huh? Nice to meet you, I'm Lieutenant commander Frank Bishop, USN.” You say, holding out a hand- but tacking on your rank anyway.

He accepts the offered handshake- and while you don't see a challenge in his eyes, you do see steel in there when he looks at you. “Lieutenant Sakamoto Kenji.” He says. “IJN.”

You nod, with a grin. “Thought so. So you're my RIO's boyfriend, huh?”

He nods. “I have that honor, yes.”

Physically, he's not impressive- but neither is he disappointing. His shockingly red hair stands at contrast with his skin, which is slightly paler than both Katsumi and Ayumi's, even if just a hair. You can't help but notice that, while they're standing close togther, neither he nor Merlin is touching the other- though you're not sure if that's because they're not sure what to do, or if it's got to do more with public decency and modesty than anything else.

“You've been helping down here, I guess?” You ask, looking over at the jet.

“Y-yes, when I have time.” He says. “Her imperial highness' strikers are maintained to a very high level, but it's not th-” He cuts off, his eyes focusing off beyond the wall for a second. “S-sorry.” He says, looking back at you. “Thought I heard something. Her strikers are kept to a very high level of maintenance, but it's not that hard to keep them there, so I help with your aircraft, when I can.”

“H-he's been a lot of h-help!” Merlin says, suddenly. “H-he gets a-a lot of the c-concepts when I-I explain them, w-with the others I-I have to d-draw pictures s-sometimes. W-without him t-this would h-have taken a lot l-longer”

Both. This is a bleeding edge piece of US equipment. As nice as it is that Merlin has found someone on par with her to help, we've got to consider that someone might get butthurt that a foreigner is assisting her.

I was speaking more of the norms of SWQU89, Tarin's an exception to any norms.

It's level maturity she displays over the others not so much the age, Anon.

And really Tarin is Tarin.

As much as I want to swear a vow to always help a brother who blows his whistle...

It's a terrible fucking idea. You'd just be adding one more guy to the mix witches mob the location. We'd need, like, a team in Juggernaut suits carrying giant fire-extinguishers filled with icewater.
>>
>>29864665
Just flashbang the whole crowd and then extract the men before fleeing. Obviously the suits would have to conceal the wearer's identity.

Always have a QRF. ALWAYS.

>Every man on base makes a pact blow their whistle once and head to where they heard a whistle, the first one he he hears multiple one quickly
>Witches pick up on this
>Start heading for whistles even if they know the guy they're after is somewhere else
>Because he'll be heading there too
And thus began the great rape orgy.

They even have ears and tails, we MGQ-lite naow.
>>
>>29864701

You try this once or twice and then you discover that the dudes you 'rescued' are pissed at you for interrupting and that they were only using the whistles to establish plausible dependability
>>
>>29864701

I like the icewater idea better, but I suppose flashes could work. Everyone wears like a welding mask or some more professional flash/heat protection.

>>29864737

Normally, I'd believe this, except the whistle is an old, under-used reg, and the only people who know it's a terrible idea are witches, the people witches tell, and experienced mixed unit guys. Also, aren't we in a witch holding right now? Why would they prep an anti-witch unit in their own base?

>>29864828

No, I think everyone knows that that's not a good idea. And if they don't, fuck that guy. He's an asshole.

[x] Well, glad to have the help, then Kenji. Just don't get yourself in trouble.

“Well,” You say, nodding. “Glad to have your help. Just don't get yourself in trouble, ok?”

He nods. “Of course. Her imperial highness knows I'm helping, she cleared it.”

You nod. “Yeah, and what about our CO.”

“I'll handle it.” You say. “If he's helping...”

“Y-yes! H-he's helping a-a lot.” She says, hurriedly and adjusting herself a hair closer to him.

“Well, alright. I'll handle Ice, no problem. When do you think we'll be ready to fly?” You ask.

She shrugs. “I-I don't k-know. P-probably not t-tomorrow, maybe d-day after?”

You nod. “Sounds fine. I won't say anything about that to the boss yet, you can tell her when we're up. So, new stuff?”

Merlin nods. “M-more or less.” She says. “Just a f-few upgrades to keep t-them working with the n-new systems. A-and there's some reliability u-upgrades.”

“Glad to hear it.” You say. “So day after tomorrow?”

She nods. “Y-yeah.”

You grin. “You anxious too?”

She hesitates, then nods. “Y-yeah.”

Hoping the pacing was a bit better, I am working on that. We'd have knocked out more, I think, but I do have to be to work in the morning (at least, as of right now, we'll see how long that lasts)

Anyway, guys, hope you enjoyed the run, and we'll see you next week! till then fellas, cheers!

This is gonna run a bit long tonight.

-

For a week, it seemed like the Russians gained a little more ground every day. Holly MacLeod was worried about it.

She was worried about lots of things.

Although the Reds were still far away from Elemdorf, there was an increased sense of urgency on the base. The Army was doing the best it could, but round-the-clock CAS and routine air strikes on the Soviet advance was only slowing them down, much to the embarrassment of the Air Force. The distance that separated the front line from where Holly slept during the long Alaskan nights didn't seem quite as massive when she flew. In the evenings, if the conditions were right, she could see the rapid flashes of explosions on the horizon while she and Chris flew BARCAP in their assigned sectors. It was an eerily beautiful sight to behold.

Morale was falling among the witch wings of Elemdorf even as kill counts increased. It was one thing to tell them to try and keep their chin up and do the best they could, but it was another thing for them to rationalize that despite their best efforts, they were losing.

The 3rd Wing was getting run ragged by double-patrols in hunt of Russian night witches. Holly recognized the importance of flying herself to exhaustion chasing phantasmal radar contacts across the sky, just as much as the next witch. She was also getting fed up with having nothing to show for it.

Commander Kazanski had tried pressing for more information about Bishop's whereabouts earlier in the week, but when it became clear that Holly "wasn't having any luck", she stopped asking. That suited the Colonel just fine: it was hard to watch the hope drain out of Kazanski's face every time she asked. Holly knew that she'd have to say *something* eventually- she just wasn't sure how to say it, and dreaded having to say it.

It wasn't all bad. Since the new patrols had started, she'd gone back to Will's barracks almost every night for a movie and dinner.

Knowing that Will was actually waiting for her back at Elemdorf was enough to put a smile on her face. For a few hours a night, he let her forget about her duties, forget about the phone call, forget about Bishop and Spellcaster. She could relax, and just be Holly MacLeod. It hadn't occurred to her how much she'd needed that in her life until she actually experienced it. Later tonight they were going to watch Big Trouble in Little China; it had been her turn to pick.

It worried Holly that she was looking forward to movie nights as much as she was, as though it were a crack in her Wing Commander armor. But she wanted to see that movie again, and more importantly she wanted to see it again with Will.

She just wasn't sure she deserved to.

"You'll see him soon, hon." Chris' voice snapped Holly out of her thoughts.

"Is it really that obvious?" Holly yawned. The double patrols were really starting to add up. It didn't help that Will's poncho made her feel comfortably warm, even thousands of feet off the ground. Comfort and tiredness were a terrible combination.

"Of course it is." The blonde laughed over the radio, sliding into formation next to Holly. "We share a room. I've seen that look on your face all week."

"Well, I won't be seeing him for long." She was clearly disappointed. "Crew rest, Chris, crew rest."

"So go sleep in his room."

"N-no way!" Holly cried out. "Like that's the easiest thing in the world, gawd!"

"It can be..." Chris let her voice trail off suggestively.

"We're not like that at all! " Chris didn't press the subject any further, to Holly's relief. She was pretty sure she'd show up very bright on a thermal scope at that moment. Will was a swell guy and all, but come on, they'd practically just met!
>>
Merlin is stuttering up a storm. How do we deal with this?
>>
>>29865401

"Alright, just kidding. Kinda." Chris gave Holly a friendly pat on the shoulder. "I should know better."

"A-anyway-" Holly stifled another yawn as Chris giggled at her. "I was gonna grab chow with Will after we finished all of our paperwork for this patrol." Holly looked over at her friend, frowning suddenly. "Sorry I've been ditching you all week- you're more than invited to join us. Late lunch is better than nothing, right?"

"Don't be silly, Holly, you two should enjoy what you have," Chris said. "Why don't you let me handle the paperwork so you can have more time with Will?"

"I'm a Wing Commander, not a high school student!" Holly replied heatedly, trying to deny how good that idea actually sounded. "I can't accept that offer no matter how much that appeals to-" She cut herself off, taking a deep breath. "Lunch isn't going anywhere in the short time it takes for me to file a patrol report."

"Truuuuuueeeeee..." Chris grinned, "Y'know, if I do go to lunch with you guys, I could ask him if he has a twin brother or something... eh heh..."

For a moment, Holly also thought about Will having a twin brother. She promptly lost a few hundred feet of altitude.

-

"CIRCE 1-1, your flight path is clear, maintain your present course," Lt. Wells spoke over the radio with all the enthusiasm a depressed 15-year-old girl could muster. "Welcome back to Elemdorf."

'Poor kid...'

Holly really had meant to try and talk to the young Spellcaster witch. After barely managing to normalize relations with Kazanski, Holly wanted to sit down with Wells to at least explain herself to the kid. However, if it was intimidating just to think on how to break the news about Bishop to the Icelady, Holly was downright scared of talking to Wells. The last thing Holly wanted to do was somehow make things worse for the young witch... but something had to be done soon.
>>
>>29865447
As she led the four-witch flight around to make a direct approach towards the 3rd Wing's hangar, Holly found herself looking for Will, thankful for the benefits of her eagle familiar. He waiting for her again, sitting at the driver's seat of his small cart, her striker stand attached to the back.

Holly was more than happy to be coming home, if just for that.

There was heavier activity on the ground today. Two new runways were under construction on the northern side of the base, prefab hangars springing up near them. With more squadrons being assigned to Elemdorf from the lower 48, an expansion had been long overdue. Holly suspected that something big was going to go down over the next few days, but all she had for the moment were her best guesses and the rumor mill. There was no denying that a lot of men, witches, and material had been shifting around on the US side of the line. Intel had been directing reconnaissance aircraft and witches to try and pin down the location of that damned Soviet flying carrier, which had been making a real nuisance of itself since the war had-

"Hey Holly, do you see that?" Chris asked over the radio, pointing towards the west. It only took Holly a few seconds to find what her wingwitch was surprised by, and she could see it in greater detail.

"Some kind of steelwing." Holly squinted slightly, looking for markings of some sort. The aircraft banked towards Elemdorf, and she was able to get a look at its overall shape.

It was a vicious looking jet, like nothing she'd seen in any aircraft recognition guide she'd studied. Forward swept wings folded outward for better low speed stability, she assumed. From the side it looked almost like a honed dagger pointed at the heart of the base, with no clearly visible external stores. What was most interesting about the aircraft was the distinct lack of a visible canopy. Where she imagined it should be was a small bump of metal closer to the nose.
>>
>>29864002
I'm honestly surprised that this hasn't been mentioned yet.
>Take him aside for a moment
>Place both hands on his shoulders, look him dead in the eye
>"Merlin is not for lewds"
>>
>>29865486
It was like a personal statement to its enemies, a demand to be feared and respected.

"I... I don't know what that is. Can't see markings from this angle-"

"Whaddyamean you don't know, Eagle-eyes?" Chris asked, readying her M249. Holly and the other two witches prepped their own weapons.

"I mean I don't know." Holly shot back, taking another look at her MFD and wondering why she had no contact on the display, no IFF squawk. 'Okay, now I'm officially worried.'

Holly increased her magic flow to the strikers, her fellow witches trailing close behind. Her eyes stayed locked onto the unknown fighter, actually considering having her flight make ready to engage and wondering where the hell the rest of Elemdorf's CAP was. She switched back to the tower's frequency, taking a breath to calm herself down before she started her contact report-

"Revenant, you are clear to land on runway 34," Wells was saying over the ATC frequency. "If you overshoot, turn west, do not turn east."

"Revenant copies all, Elemdorf Tower, runway 34." The voice of the pilot was distorted by the radio, giving the callsign a more ominous tone. The fighter made another course correction, and as it banked once again, Holly finally got a clear view of the markings on the stabilizers and main wings. As if on cue, her MFD beeped, and the fighter's contact and IFF code appeared on the small display.

"We're good, Chris," Holly said, flicking her M-16 back to SAFE before shouldering it. CIRCE flight breathed a collective sigh of relief.

"False alarm?"

"Y-yeah. Data-link failure, or lag, or something." Holly started laughing nervously to herself, massaging her temples to ease the tension. "Gawddamnit, I am too tired for this shit right now." She knew she was whining out loud, and didn't care. Nobody in the flight could blame her.
>>
>>29865200
Thanks for the run Ghost was fun. I especially like the intro post.
>>
>>29865524
"I'm with you on that." Chris kept staring at the strange fighter for a moment longer before she relaxed. "Crew rest is gonna be *awesome*, I'm gonna sleep forever. Or two hours. Whatever!" Her sentiment was definitely shared.

-

Landing had been easy: no bad weather, no crosswinds, great visibility throughout the whole approach. With the sun already setting, it was honestly perfect flying weather. Holly would have been more than happy to play for just a bit longer in the sky, if she wasn't been so tired, or nervous from her momentary scare a few minutes before. That and Will was waiting for her.

He'd driven his cart out to greet her within moments of landing, a pair of techs along for the ride. As soon as they finished securing her strikers to the stand, she jumped into the open seat next to Will.

"Hey you."

"Hey yourself." He handed Holly her boots and cowboy hat, part of their firmly established post-flight ritual.

"So didja miss me?" She pointed at a pair of binoculars hanging from his neck, and then started poking his chest. "Didja?"

"Yeah. I was looking for you up there when word came in that your flight was close."

"Oh?" She smiled up at him.

"Got distracted by that crazy fighter though."

"Oh. I see how it is, steelwings over ladies, huh? Huh?" Holly put on her best pout, whapping Will upside his head with her hat.

"Not a fan I take it?"

"We thought it was hostile," Holly said, glowering at the jet as it rolled down runway 34. "Just a bad combination of me being tired, that... thing being in my sky without warning, and maybe a bug in the MFD data link."

"Shit," Will punched the steering wheel of the cart. "We did a full work up on your e-gear today, got no downchecks or anything. I'm sorry Holly, I'll have the boys run more-"

"I seriously doubt that it was your crew's fault," Holly turned back to face Will. "Data links with AWACS and ground stations fail for any number of reasons."
>>
>>29865446
I was wondering the same. She stops in combat.
>>
>>29865572
"Still, it musta been quite a scare," Will said. "If it was something on our end, we will find it. Trust me."

"I just... thought the base was about to get hit and got worried. Really worried, y'know? I tried to hide it from the others, but I started thinking about you on the ground, and what if that had actually been a Soviet fighter, and what if there were more and... yeah." She laughed nervously. "It's silly, right?"

"I think you'd have more reason to be concerned if you weren't worried, Holly."

She didn't agree with him entirely, but she wasn't exactly going to stop him when he was in the middle of being nice to her.

"... Thanks, Will."

"I guess I shouldn't invite you to see that jet up close with me?" Will asked. "I can always see it later, it's just that the whole crew is kinda goin' nuts over that thing, and-"

"Nononono! I'll go with you," she said quickly. "Just...make sure it doesn't try to eat me or something. You'll protect me, right?"

"You're a witch!" Will protested. "I'm just this guy, you know?"

"Just this guy, he says," Holly snorted. "You're a wrench-head, so threaten to dismantle it or something!"

-

Will had things to take care of before he could meet back up with Holly, namely getting a team assigned to run more thorough checks on the MFD data links for the whole wing. This gave her some time to wrap up a patrol report. After enough prodding, Chris convinced Holly it was okay to allow her to take the reports to intel. With that settled, Holly moved outside and caught a good glimpse of the new super jet as a marshal slowly guided the craft into the hangar next door.

She decided that she didn't like it any better on the ground. Even at low power, the engines sounded like twin banshees, a distinct whine that couldn't be mistaken for any other steelwing. The lack of canopy was really bothering her--she kept wondering how the pilot could see, assuming there was a pilot.
>>
>>29865610
At the same time, she could understand why the techs would like the thing. It was clearly the latest and the greatest from whomever had designed it, and there was a certain... sexiness to the design. If you liked curvy metal monsters that were the stuff of Holly's nightmares.

'Definitely assigned to Spellcaster,' Holly thought with some dread.

"That's going to be a problem," Chris said as she joined the Colonel in watching the show.

"Did you even deliver those reports?"

"I've always been a faster runner than you," Chris grinned. "You're like the slowest eagle ever when you're on the ground."

"I am not!" Holly snapped. She looked back inside her own hangar, hoping that Will was on the way... and nope, he was apparently involved in some sort of argument with one of his crew chiefs. Dammit.

"Y'know, he's a lot like you," Chris observed. "He really takes his job seriously."

"He probably thinks the crews might have missed something with our data links." Holly frowned. "I told him that's mostly likely not what caused our little issue earlier, but I don't think I convinced him."

"Where have I heard a story like that before, I wonder?" Chris started snickering to herself. "You two are made for each other.

"Whatever!" Holly crossed her arms and concentrated on glaring at the taxiing jet, praying that Will would finish his business soon and whisk her away to some hot food-

"Colonel MacLeod!" The voice shouting her last name belonged to Kazanski, but it was a lot angrier than Holly expected. Icelady's hands were balled up into fists as she marched at a brisk pace at Holly. "MacLeeooooood!"

"Oh shit," Chris mumbled, immediately stepping up between Kazanski and the Colonel.

"I need to talk to her, *right now*!"

"She's on crew rest."

"Crew rest, is she?" Kazanski brushed past Chris, deftly avoiding a grab at her arm as she did.
>>
>>29865648
Chris' familiar was out a moment later, but a look from Holly halted her in place. Lt. Kerner jogged up, trying to herd Chris away from both COs.

"I tried to stop her," Kerner was saying. Chris looked as through she was ready to flatten the shorter witch.

"Nice looking steelwing, isn't it MacLeod?" Any warmth in the atmosphere simply vanished as the white-haired witch was suddenly in Holly's face, pushing her against the hangar wall. She looked half way between throwing a right hook, or breaking down in tears on the spot. "Still on crew rest? Can you chat for a minute?"

"What the hell are you-"

"Tell me you didn't know," Kazanski pleaded. "Tell me you didn't know I was getting a replacement pilot!"

"Replacement?" was all that Holly could say.

"You did, didn't you?" the Navy witch accused. "Because I socked you when you deserved it? Because I'm not Air Force?"

"I didn't know!"

"You're the Wing Commander!" Kazanski shouted in disbelief. "How can you *not* know?!"

"Tabby, come on," Kerner tried to counsel her commander. "Let 'er go or there's gonna be trouble."

"Yes, let her go," Chris announced darkly, her doberman familiar out for all to see. "Let her go, or you'll find out just how far I can take witch privilege to cover up what I'm about to do to you both."

Holly had been trying to do her best to get over what had happened. Everything she did, no matter what, was ultimately in the interest of the witches in her command. She knew that she'd wronged Kazanski, and had tried to make up for it. Now her XO was seconds away from starting a fight, Kazanski was accusing her of going over her head to pull in a replacement pilot. Holly was tired, hungry, and all she wanted to do was sit down with a nice guy and maybe her best friend, and be able to put aside her duties for just a short time.

Something in Holly MacLeod's head just snapped. Her own familiar flashed into existence, body alight with magic as she shoved Kazanski away hard enough that she tumbled to the ground.

"Commander," Holly began quietly. "I appreciate that you're upset, but I've been running two patrols a day for the last week just like everyone else in the command," her voice raised into a shrill shout, "and I do not need your particular brand of shit right now!" Before Kazanski could respond, Holly hauled the younger woman back on her feet, spun her back towards the wall and slammed her into it.

"Get your hands off-" Kazanski started to protest.

"Oh no, this is not how this is going down, you insubordinate little *child*!" Holly cut her off. "You do not get to pull that act with me!"

"Holly, hold on a sec, you don't have to say one damn thing to these people." Chris said, surprised by the sudden outburst.

"Lt. Colonel McPherson, stand down," Holly growled through her teeth. "I will deal with you in a moment." That was enough to get Chris to send her familiar away and take several steps away from Kerner, standing at attention.

"MacLeod," Kazanski snarled, struggling to get away from the wall. "If you don't let go of me, I swear-"

"That's COLONEL MacLeod!" Holly roared. "You think you can pull this shit just because you're in a mixed unit and your precious pilot went MIA? Just ignore the chain of command, pretend that witch privilege lets you act like a little girl just because your *feelings* got hurt?" Pushing herself away from Kazanski, Holly found herself pacing in a circle, trying to calm herself down.
>>
>>29865745
"You've lost one man, Kazanski. Whole Air National Guard units have been wiped out since this war began. Other squadrons have suffered such heavy casualties that the survivors are being used as replacements for other empty billets. Over a hundred USAF pilots have died in Alaska, Commander. Has that thought, for even one second, crossed your mind?" Holly had to stop for a moment, struggling to fight the growing lump in her throat, a tremor building in her voice. "Can you tell me what makes Bishop more special than all of those dead men? If you can't tell me, maybe you can explain it to the ones who are still waiting to get shipped home. Explain it to the friends they left behind, while you're at it."

The Navy witch opened her mouth to respond, but she couldn't find the words to even start.

"My God, Commander. I am sorry about Frank Bishop. I'm sorry that you're getting a replacement pilot, but I didn't know. I swear to God I didn't know, I'd have said something! If you told me you didn't want a replacement, I'd have tried to deny the transfer! I'm responsible for the lives of forty-eight USAF witches, and the lives of your squadron on top of that. I have a whole wing's worth of maintenance specialists that answer to me. You think I want to take time out of worrying over the lives of my girls just to find a better way to piss you off? Haven't I done that enough?"

Kazanski remained silent, staring at the Colonel, but unable to muster a response. Behind Holly, the jet had finally entered Spellcaster's hangar. The Navy witch stalked past the Colonel wordlessly, off to confront the new arrival. Kerner followed her closely, sparing MacLeod a glance and mouthing 'sorry' before she vanished into the hangar, calling for her commander to slow down.

Holly stood her ground for a moment, breathing heavily until she was certain the Navy witches were out of earshot, before walking over to the hangar wall, leaning back, and slamming her forehead into it.
>>
>>29865798
"Holly?" Chris asked nervously.

"Goddamnit," Holly spat.

"Holly I'm-"

"I'm not mad at you, Chris." She gave the wall another headbutt, this one a lot softer than the first. "I'm never going to get things right between myself and that squadron, am I?"

"Permission to speak freely?"

"You've never had to ask before."

"Fuck 'em. Navy pukes, the lot of 'em." Chris placed a hand on Holly's back as the redhead sniffled through a laugh.

"Everything is so simple with you."

"You handled that as best you could, Holly, better than I would have. I think I'd have just started punching." Chris sighed. "I think I'm seeing why you have a problem with mixed units."

"Gawd. Finally someone sees what I see." Holly turned back around to look at Chris, wiping tears from the corners of her eyes. "Maaaaaybe I shouldn't have done that, my head hurts."

"Of course it does, you idiot." She poked at the growing red spot on Holly's forehead. "Gonna leave a mark for a bit. Want me to find a heal witch?"

"Not for something dumb," Holly groaned, sitting down and nursing her head. Damn, that really did hurt. "Where's Will? Keepin' a girl waiting like this..."

"I'm sure he's on the way." Chris took a seat next to her friend, watching as two more witches ran past them into Spellcaster's hangar. Members of the squadron no doubt. "For what it's worth, I've been in the office as much as you have over the week, and I've seen nothing that indicated they were getting a new pilot or aircraft."

"The hell is the point of being a Wing Commander if they're just gonna have shit go over my head like this?" Holly asked.

"To deal with the aftermath when stuff goes wrong, of course." Chris wrapped an arm around Holly and pulled her in close. "And when that happens, you can always lean on your friendly executive officer to take some of the heat off your back."

It was a tender and quiet moment between the two friends, one that Holly would have been happy to enjoy for the duration of her crew rest. It just wasn't in her to ignore Lt. Samantha Wells as she ran past the two witches, sobbing loudly as she followed the rest of Spellcaster into their hangar. It was too late to stop her from seeing the man who was replacing her hero.

-

The witches of VF-3 reminded Holly more of a firing squad than a band of unbelievably furious women. The exception to this was little Wells, who almost fell to her knees in disbelief as the pilot descended from his fighter. The helmet completely obscured his face, fitting the callsign 'Revenant' too perfectly. He stood tall and confident, sizing up the angry girls before him, making Holly almost want to knock that stupid helmet off his head personally. Some might have described it as 'swagger'. Holly thought the man was being a deliberate asshole.

'Damnit, Wells shouldn't even be here,' Holly told herself. 'She's just a kid, doesn't deserve any of this! I should have put in her transfer back to the lower 48 myself!'

"Hey, look," Kazanski snapped, moving towards the pilot, familiar manifest, fists clenched so tight that the knuckles were somehow paler than the rest of her. Frost trailed every step she took. "I don't know who the fuck you think you are-"

And she stopped. Her mouth moved silently, but no words came out. The rest of the witches gathered behind Kazanski all seem to stagger in place.

The pilot had reached up to remove his helmet, revealing the smirking face of Frank Bishop. His arms were held open, as though beckoning his fellow squadron-mates to come to him.

"I AM THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PRESENTS!" he roared triumphantly.

"F-Frank?" Kazanski's voice betrayed everything, how much she missed him, how she believed she'd never see her friend again. Her familiar vanished, the frost melting behind her as she took another hesitant step forward. She was already crying, not fighting it whatsoever, unsure if this was all a dream or nightmare.

“In the flesh, Ice.” Bishop said, dropping his hands back to his sides. “Well, mostly flesh.” The pilot frowned, poking himself in the ribs. “There's some Tomcat in there too, now.” He looked back up in time to catch Kazanski as the young woman came flying at him, wrapping him in a tight hug and sobbing fiercely into his chest. The rest of Spellcaster joined them a second later, bringing Bishop to the ground despite his best efforts to stay standing.

“Y-you big s-s-stupid! Did you know h-how worried we were!?” Kazanski wailed, her voice muffled as she continued to weep into his sternum.

"You rotten bastard sonofabitch, I hate you!" Lt. Kerner cried out, giving Bishop a few well deserved punches to the shoulder. "How dare you do this to us!"

"Bud' ty proklyat!" The Russian witch sobbed. "God damn you, Bishop! I-I saw you die and I could do n-nothing for you! You sent me away! Why would you do this?!"

"Frank!" Wells could do little more than keep crying out the name of her pilot. "Frank! Frank! Frank!"

The impossible and unexpected reunion had become very hard for Holly to watch, especially when the whole world was suddenly so damned blurry. Her anger towards Kazanski was gone, blasted away by the miracle she'd witnessed. Somehow, everything had worked itself out. Against her own grim predictions, Georgette Mackintosh had done it. Bishop was alive and buried in his witches, the weight of Holly's lies lifted ever so slightly from her shoulders.

She quietly walked away, hoping that they hadn't noticed her even for a second, not wanting to disturb the moment.

She needed to call home, more than ever. She wanted to tell Mom and Dad that she was alive, unhurt, and that she loved them very much.

-

The tears refused to stop, which made the walk away from Spellcaster's hangar difficult. Holly kept trying to look around to check if anyone could see her like this. At best she found blobs that might have been people, and larger blobs that were probably steelwings being guided out to the runways. She ended up walking into one of the people-shaped blobs, and was surprised to discover that it was Will.

"Whoa! What happened to you?" His eyes widened when he saw the red bump on Holly's forehead. "Are you hurt?!"

"C-can we see the jet later?" Holly asked. "I th-think we should s-see the jet later."

"What's goin on?" Will persisted, worried by how upset Holly was. "Are you okay?"

"M-more than okay, I j-just don't want to interrupt a f-family, that's all." Shaking her head, she reached forward and pulled Will into a hug, trying not to cry as hard as she was. He straightened up in place, unsure of what to do as she squeezed tightly against him.

"Are you sure you're okay?"

"I'm sorry Will," Holly cried. "I can't have lunch with you, I need to call home, I need to call home r-right now!"

"That's okay, Holly." After another moment of hesitation, his arms wrapped protectively around the witch. "It's all right. You do what you gotta." Will wasn't sure what had happened, but he did know that Holly badly needed the hug. They stood connected together like this until she calmed down.

"Thank you..." she whispered.

"'Swhat I'm here for."

Pulling away from Will, Holly lingered for a moment longer to look him in the eyes, mustering up the barest hint of a smile before sprinting off towards the phone exchange.
