You are Flying officer Julian Reber of the Royal Air Force. You joined the RAF in order to fight the BETA, an alien menace that currently swarms over most of the Eurasia. In the few months since you entered active service, you have become the vanguard of the European Union's efforts to recover continental Europe.

In your most recent sortie, you found a new BETA Hive being constructed in France. Through great skill and luck, you were even able to detect the general location of the Hive's reactor.

Now, your entire base is in semi-lockdown. You can still move around freely, but there is to be no contact with anything or anyone outside the base; the phone lines have been physically disconnected and communications to and from the base have to be carried out through heavily-defended couriers. Something is happening. It doesn't take a genius to figure out command is planning a Hive infiltration before the BETA can properly establish their new stronghold, but you don't know why the preparations are being carried out under so much secrecy.

Your next briefing is in a few hours. You've just had some sleep and a meal, so you don't need rest. You've also been assured that your squadron's TSFs are still optimized for speed and agility, so you don't have to worry about that either. The only thing you need to do is figure out how to kill time.

>Walk over to Dover base and see how the Cerberus veterans are handling this.
>The officer's lounge has some "special bottles" in their inventory and you've always joked about doing a Hive infiltration drunk.
>Go for a walk outside and just wander around.

You decide to go over to Dover base to see how they're handling things. Your service records does more than enough to prove you're good, but you're not an idiot. You're inexperienced and you know it. You'll take anything the veterans can give you.

The situation at Dover is about the same as the Round Table. People are rushing all over the place with various maps and folders. You give everyone a wide berth and go looking for pilot country. The MPs know your face well enough to give you access.

You find Helga, Luna and Ilfriede sitting at a table with Robinson. It seems you weren't the only one who decided to get some company.

You walk over to greet them.

"Evening, ladies," you say. "Mind of I join you?"

"Please," Helga says as she pulls you a chair.

Robinson gives you a weak smile, but it's obvious she's distracted.

You sit down and it's obvious the mood isn't what it usually is. For one thing, Ilfriede and Luna aren't just screwing around. For another, their plates and drinks are still mostly full. It makes you wonder what impending combat does to your behaviour.

>Wait and see what their conversation is about.
>Get down to business. "I don't suppose any of you have ever been on a Hive infiltration?"
>You need a distraction. "What do you all do for fun around here?"

For as much as we might want to talk about the upcoming infiltration, it looks like they might be worrying themselves over it enough on their own.

Give it a minute to see if we interrupted anything serious. If they want to talk about business, they'll do it. Otherwise
>You need a distraction.
it might just be good to try and get them to take their minds off it for a little while. There's no sense in hammering on the fact that it's about to be business time; they're tense enough as it is. Unwind a bit, and then maybe we can talk about things getting serious without just making all parties involved even more uncomfortable.

You haven't been in the RAF all that long, but between your training exercises, the time you spent with more experienced pilots and your own combat experiences, you know this level of tension isn't normal. Pilots on standby are supposed to be alert, not depressed and brooding.

It's perfectly understandable. The Cerberus battalion has been conducting operations against the BETA for years specifically so this wouldn't happen, and it wasn't enough. Any normal pilot would feel like all their efforts were wasted.

However, since you're here, you might as well see if you can cheer them up.

"So," you say, "what do you usually do around here for fun?"

Robinson and Helga look at you like you're completely fucking insane and you can't really blame them. Ilfriede and Luna, however, seem to be taking you seriously.

"We have a pool," Ilfriede says.

"Going for a swim might be fun," Luna says.

Robinson is now looking at them like they're both fucking idiots. Helga, however, seems more pensive.
"That might not be a bad idea," she says. "It's not like worrying about the Hive will accomplish anything. It's the strategists' problem for now."

"I didn't exactly bring my swimsuit," Robinson says. "Then again, it's not like I used to bring it to SERE exercises either."

You didn't bring your swimsuit either, but like Robinson said, you're in the military. Even if your uniform was soaking wet and you had to walk back to the Round Table base on foot through a blizzard, you'd be fine. As it is, you'll just need to take a minute to change your underwear before the briefing.

"The pool sounds nice," you say. It'll make a nice distraction and to be honest, you could probably use the exercise. All that time spent sitting in a TSF is starting to get bad for your muscles.

"Yes!" Luna says. "We can finally check if you're really built like a Super Hornet!"

You turn towards Robinson and *stare*.

"What," she asks. "Just because you won't peep doesn't mean I can't. My training squadron was all girls, so I like having a man around."

"I can understand that part," you say, "but do you really have to gossip?"

"Yes, yes, I do."

You know you'll be getting back at her for this eventually, but it can wait.

The girls lead you to the pool and you split off to get changed. Or rather, you strip down to your underwear and store the rest of your uniform in a locker. It's only just occurred to you that you don't have a towel, but you'll just have to deal with it. The walk back will be cold, but it won't be as bad as the time Pentecost made you jump out of a burning F-4 into the Atlantic, in full uniform, in the middle of winter.

The Cerberus pool, as it turns out, is very impressive. You haven't seen anything like it - or any gym facilities, for that matter - at the Round Table base and you'll definitely think about coming here more often.

Since you didn't need to change, the girls haven't had time to catch up to you. You've got time to stretch and dive into the pool before they finally come in.

Helga, Luna and Ilfried look very good in their blue swimsuit and Robinson, also in her underwear, catches your eye. Of course, the swimsuits aren't as revealing as the fortified suits, and you've already seen Robinson in her underwear, so no matter how hard you would like to, you can't get excited.

You try really, really hard not to think about that.

You swim over to the ladies as they finish stretching.

For a second, you flash back to your training, specifically the underwater CQC. Oh yes, that was part of your training. Everything was.

You remember the 200-pound SAS grunts who used to pin you under the water with one arm until you were seconds away from brain damage. You think of their hairy, sweaty body rubbing against you. You think of all the times when it wasn't the SAS, but the Army - THE FUCKING ARMY - dragging you down and rubbing your head at the bottom of the tank. You remember the crushing humiliation you and your whole training squad suffered.

A part of you died during those exercises. Today's the day you get it back.

You reach the edge of the pool and pull yourself up. Robinson is standing right next to you, completely defenseless. This is your one and only shot.

You grab her in a bear hug, take a deep breath and tip yourself backwards into the pool.

The fight quickly breaks down into hapless flailing as you both struggle for dominance and completely fail. The one upside is that you quickly surface, still clinging to each other, so you're not in immediate danger of drowning.

Which isn't to say you're not in immediate danger.

The first thing you notice is that your hand managed to get inside Robinson's sports bra.

The second thing you notice is that Robinson's hand managed to get inside your underwear. Also, it turns out you have some sort of fetish for underwater CQC with women, which restores some faith in your masculinity, but makes this situation somewhat more embarrassing.

The third thing you notice is that the Cerberus girls are staring at you and gossiping with each other.

Robinson quickly looks down at your hand, and then her hand. You both let go of each other, but Robinson doesn't move away. She looks more... hesitant, than angry.

"Listen, Re- Julian," she says. "I'm interested, but I've got a bad history with men, so... can we not think about this right now?"

Luna and Helga both give you a thumb's up. Ilfriede doesn't seem to get it.

You spend the rest of your free time doing laps around the pool and practicing your form. It's nice to feel the flow of your body through the water. Flying is more exciting, but this is more relaxing.

Soon enough, you're back in the briefing room. It's subtle, but the mood isn't what it usually is. The tension is there, but it's more oppressive. There's no small talk between the pilots. Everyone is just looking at Group captain Hall, who begins the briefing once the room is full.

"As some of you already know or suspect," he says, "we have encountered a new Hive in France. The Hive is still under construction and we are planning an assault on the Hive as we speak. I don't need to tell you that this information must be kept with the utmost secrecy. Until you have been debriefed and authorized to do so, you must not speak of the Hive to anyone who is not currently assigned to this base. Am I clear?"

The room responds with a resounding, "Yes, sir!"

"Good," Hall says. "Our first order of business is not the Hive itself, but its potential reinforcement."

The projector displays a map of France behind Hall. You see five red circles that presumably represent enemy formations.

"The small formations of BETA we've been tracking recently have begun to merge into groups of roughly 10,000," Hall says. "One of these groups seems to be heading towards Calais. Tristan and Galahad's A-10Cs will deal with those. The other four groups will be intercepted by Arthur, Lancelot, Bedivere and Gawai. Annihilating the formation entirely is preferred, but we'll settle for whatever we can get. Furthermore, the Hive needs to be dealt with as quickly as possible, so we have little time for our attacks. We will move in, kill as many as we can, and then return to base to resupply and get our orders for the attack on the Hive itself."

His eyes sweep across the room.

Resources are automatically applied to dice rolls. You've been getting a +4 bonus to TSF Piloting from your optimized Tornado on top of the +3 you get from your level, for example. My plan is to currently cap Skills and Resources at 10, for a maximum total of 20. I don't think the Quest will run beyond that, but we'll see.

I'll probably update the pastebin with more details soon, but I want to keep the skills fairly broad. Science, for example, covers everything that doesn't involve computer or building things, so it applies to physics, chemistry, medicine, etc. I thought about having more defined and specific skill, but I didn't want to make the rules too complicated. If there's a hedge case, I'll just go for whatever gives you the biggest modifier.

The questions are the usual.

"Is there any information the enemy formations?"

"It's a standard distribution," Hall says. "Approximately 10,000 BETA total per group, made up of 45% Tanks, 7% Destroyers, 15% Grapplers, 1% Fort and the rest are infantry strains you don't need to worry about. We believe Lasers and Heavy Lasers combined will only account for 1% of the formation, so 100 total."

"How far are they from the Hive?"

"According to our calculations, we should be able to intercept them between 100 and 200 miles away from the hive, depending on the enemy group and other factors. You may approach the Hive if necessary, but do not engage the main force. We don't expect our squadrons to be close enough to support each other, but CIC will watch over the situation and keep us updated."

"Can we expect support?"

Hall visibly tenses at that question.

"No," he slowly says. "The Cerberus battalion is being held back for the assault on the Hive proper. Due to some... circumstances, artillery support will not be available at any point during the Hive infiltration. This is being taken into consideration by our strategists."

That, more than anything else, sends the room grumbling. You recall your own laserjagd. While your efforts were impressive, the artillery bombardment did most of the damage. You didn't expect much, given how far the Hive is from the coast, but still...

"Shut it!" Hall says. "We have our orders and we will accomplish our mission with the resources available to us."

That brings an end to the question and the briefing. The pilots go off to their changing room, still complaining about the orders.

You don't mind the plan so long as there's a chance at victory. All you need to do is grasp that one fleeting chance and run with it. Everything will fall right into place. You practically hum on your way to the lockers.

"You're taking this well," she says.

"We've had harder jobs, and we've had easier jobs that turned out to be a lot harder," you say. "Besides, my ancestors were mercenaries. They had to deal with shit like this all the time."

"I don't think your ancestors ever had to fight off alien invaders, Julian."

She's right, technically. But they totally would have if there had been aliens around for them to fight.

You head towards the hangars for your usual routine. Conveniently enough, Wright is standing next to your TSF with a bundle in her hands.

"Good afternoon, Flight lieutenant," you say.

"Good afternoon, Flying officer," she says. Then she gives you the bundle, which appears to be a woman's fortified suit. "You may or may not need this later, I think."
"I- No, forget it, I'm not even going to ask."

You just take the fortified suit and step a little closer to her.

"Has there been any news on the reactor?"

"You'll likely be asked to capture it intact," she whispers. "One piece in working order would do, and you might have to destroy it. It'll depend on the flow of the battle, which, unfortunately, is not something I can predict."

"Glad to know you're not infallible, ma'am."

You salute and head back to your TSF. You stuff the fortified suit Wright gave you somewhere in the back and begin the launch sequence. As always, you and Elaine lead Robinson squadron out of the hangars and towards the carriers. You could just fly over to Calais, but every drop of fuel helps.

Knight appears on your comms, along with a detailed flight route.

"Flying officer Reber," she says. "Arthur squadron has been tasked to assault a BETA formation that will be approaching the Hive from the south, so you'll be the most isolated of our squadrons. You should be able to intercept them roughly 100 miles from the new Hive. I'll keep you updated if there are any changes."

"Thank you," you say.

Hall soon gives the order to move out and you lead the squadron's flight towards the BETA formation.

It takes you several hours of straight flight before they finally pop up on your sensors, but you manage to reach them ahead of schedule, so they're 150 miles from the Hive instead of 100. It also looks like they haven't spotted you yet.

"Arthur squadron, this is Arthur 1," Hall says. "We have made contact with. We should have time for about ten or twelve passes before we have to return to base to resupply and get ready to assault the main Hive."

"Arthur Crown to Arthur squadron," Knight says. "There are no other enemies in the area of operations. You are free to engage the objective."

"Arthur squadron," Hall says, "follow the vanguard!"

Arthur squadron opens fire on the formation, indiscriminately killing Grapplers and Tanks by the dozen. The onslaught is absolutely devastating, although the Destroyers and Forts sustain it without damage.

The lesser strains, however, are not the concern of your element. You and Elaine forge a path through the formation and you spot a stray Heavy Laser that can't hit you without risking friendly fire.

You holster one of your cannons and plot an orbiting path around the Heavy Laser. Soon, you are in its blind spot and you charge through a hole in the BETA's ranks, grabbing the Heavy Laser as you charge forward. You now have a shield to use against the other Lasers.

Elaine is laughing in your comms.

"I can't believe you pulled that off," she says.

"One of my instructors taught me," you say. "It's dangerous as hell, but it's the best defense we can ask for against the Lasers."

Now that you have everything you need, it's time for the hunt.

Equipped with your trusty shield, you easily gun down several clusters of Lasers. However, the strain of high-speed manoeuvres is too much to bear and you're forced to drop the Heavy Laser you're carrying. It looks like your laserjagd is at an end.

Behind you, Elaine swears as a Grappler latches onto her, but she swiftly shoots it dead. You see some Forts going down from the rest of the squadron's assault, but it seems that the Tanks are beginning to regroup and the Destroyers are turning towards you.

Fortunately, the situation isn't critical yet and you have plenty of fuel and ammo left.

"Yes, sir!"

You draw your cannon once again and wade into the fray alongside Elaine. You're isolated and the BETA are beginning to converge on your position, but some quick turns and a well-timed boost prevent you from being surrounded. You gun down ten approaching Grapplers. Elaine fares equally well against the Tanks approaching her position. Meanwhile, the rest of Arthur squadron flanks the Destroyers and dozens of the things die from their guns.

You move closer than you'd like to the Forts and Lasers, but both you and Elaine manage to stay out of their attack range. Arthur squadron announces its return to the main battle with a series of 120mm shots that rip through the exposed Fort-class BETA.

You fare less well. A Grappler manages to reach you and claws and your Tornado's leg. Elaine guns it down immediately, although it costs her a prime position between the Tanks.

"Don't get yourself killed, Julian," she says. "We still need to 'think' about things later on."

"Oh, I'm sure you can think on your own if I end up dead," you say.

"I already do. It gets boring though."

You laugh quietly and take a stock of the situation.

You're halfway through your allocated ammunitions and fuel. You've completely eliminated the Destroyers, which is a major achievement. However, the Grapplers, Tanks, Forts and Lasers are still holding fairly strong, barely above half strength. You'd like to bring them at least below half strength, but you've done enough damage to call mission complete.

So long as our leg is still in operational shape, we should be fine to clear a few more of them. The ones we don't take out now we have to handle within the Hive, and it's far easier to handle them out in the open.

If they want to keep moving toward their destination, we get to pick them off with no danger to ourselves. If some of them try and pursue, they're splitting their forces so our job is easier regardless.

You're still in this fight, but there are only so many chances you can take. You gave the laserjagd your best shot, but now it looks like you'll have to give it up. On the bright side, if you lead the squadron far enough away from the Lasers, you won't have to worry about them anymore. You won't be able to exit their range without giving up the fight, but you'll have more flexibility for cover.

"Elaine, let's head back to the squadron," you say. "We need to regroup before going forward."

"Yeah, good idea," she says. "It looks like we're about halfway through, but I'd really like to finish this."

The squadron, however, is on the defensive. They're keeping it together, barely, but the Forts are also advancing.

Then you hear the panicked screams through your comm.

"OH GOD! OH GOD! HELP!"

"Someone get on 14 now!"

"Its no good, I can't reach him!"

Bullets fly out to strike down the Fort that has Arthur 14 speared on its stinger, and fail.

Arthur 14's mark on your HUD switches to KIA and his TSF falls limp.

You see the rest of the squadron follow you out. It was time to go anyway, so it's not like they're just doing it for your sake. Besides, they must know you're all right, since you're still piloting this thing. You just hope Robinson let Knight know you were still alive.

That's it for today. The next thread will be Wednesday at 7PM.

Also, I don't plan on handing out more than 1XP per completed objective, but I will subdivide the harder objectives into easier ones. In this case, the Destroyers, Grapplers, Tanks, Forts and Lasers were worth up to 3XP total each, depending on how much damage you did. You got close to bringing them all to half strength and getting 2XP each, but the dice just weren't in it.

I like the way this system works. I can use the easier objectives to assure a minimum of XP and if you want to get more, you need to measure the risks of failure versus the rewards of success. It didn't pay off this time, but it could have.

I will probably avoid having so many dice roll posts in a row in the future though. It felt too passive.

Anyway, 'night folks.

>Also, I don't plan on handing out more than 1XP per completed objective, but I will subdivide the harder objectives into easier ones.
Seems like a reasonable way of handling it unless we run into a particularly difficult and/or valuable all-or-nothing sort of objective somewhere down the line.

G'night.
