You are Shax Bonemurder, Raid Leader! You did all kinds of investigating yesterday, and decided to hit the quarry and put a stop to whatever it is that is making this dumb earth elemental whine so much because it is really starting to get on your nerves.

Your raid group is right outside the quarry now, and you manage to avoid or take out any hired guards along the way.

>CURRENT RAID ROSTER: http://pastebin.com/mZgVD5yH

>Since the whole quest is an experiment I am experimenting with an ability tree. Let's see how this works out? Shax's Ability Tree Listed Here: http://pastebin.com/aBfqv1vP

It looks like the quarry has a heavily guarded front, and a variety of barracks as it gets further into the excavation. They've got loads of supply carts filled up with stuff and a lot of guards on those as well. There is an uncertain number of adventurers inside.

The boys are eager for action, and the trolls are always hungry. The quarry has probably noticed some patrols not returning, but they aren't on high alert yet. Looting the place is always the goal, but to what extent is up to you!

what's the plan, boss?

>Hit 'em fast and hard. Send in the trolls, big guys, and golems! Everyone else will clean up.
>Sneak it on in! Small guys, trolls, and sappers will take out and prime whatever looks like a good target. When they give the signal, you'll rush in while explsions are going off!
>Something else entirely. Write it on in!

Take 'em all out in one quick attack! That's how a raid leader does it!

It's a tree so I'm assuming we have to pick up Alignment: Evil Good and Like A Stray Cat first.

I like Shax's CHA ability tree so I'm cool with focusing on it but we have to raid and fight too. Wish I knew how often we get skill tree points.

Anything starred is something you can grab. When you grab something, you'll unlock other abilities. I'll try to make that more clear.

The Skill Tree seems really neat OP! Though I can't for the life of me puzzle out why we'd ever need Monkey Grip.

I'd say Dat's our boss! makes sense for the first one, yeah.
>>
>>29784035
Oh, okay.

Might be better to make something in paint or something like Shadow Quest's skill tree to make it easier to tell.
>>
right. You're going to do this quick, and you're going to do it quiet. You creep over to the golems. With a harsh whisper, you ask them, "Hey, you guys, how sneaky can you be?"

In an incredibly loud voice, all three golems respond at the same time. {I am afraid I've never tried, young goblin. It is not in my nature to attempt such actions.}

You clean out your ears and turn to the rest of the raid, "Okay so these guys are going to hang back. Mnar, you and the big guys keep track of them, alright?" You are getting the hang of this leader stuff, you think. "Whoop, you and your fish boys need to help make sure no one stumbles in on the operation.

You close in with Milda and her brothers, "How good are you guys at timing explosions? I want to blow up a lot of their stuff all at the same time."

Dorle and Mani look at each other with a shrug. "Gotten two or three charges to go off at the same time before, but nothing more than that. And they were small ones, too. Some of the larger shakers got a more complex triggering mechanism. Might be tricky dependin' on what all you wanna bomb." You nod. This oughtta be good practice, then.

Alright, so you're going for a sneaky approach. That means Gneb's crew and the trolls will be with you. How do you wanna go about this? Remember, there is a big guard point up front, and a relatively thin perimeter around the quarry.

>You and the trolls will handle the initial guards, and the boys and duergar will sneak in after.
>Try to avoid the guards entirely and sneak in with as little noise as possible. Catch the guards between the two groups.

"So what's the plan boss, those guards are in our way, right?" Gneb says, licking his lips. That cheeky little guy has the magical sword from that adventurer you beat up earlier. When'd he get that?

You hoist your sword up and point at the guards. "They're not in our way. They're our way in! Let's ge-"

"Hey boss, look!" Kuzr points at the perimeter the guards are patrolling. "They aren't doin' that great of a job. Maybe we can just sneak in?"

You're a little embarrassed now.

"Oh, alright. Let's try to get in there, then."

Gneb's crew, the dwarves, and trolls all follow you in a giant clump of people. You get up to the edge of the forest in front of the perimeter. "Alright, let's get started."

Gneb stops you. "Maybe we shouldn't go all at once. Just sayin'."

You guess that a crowd of two trolls, five goblins, and three dwarves would be pretty noticeable, even to the laziest of the guards. "Oh. Okay." You look around, "Any volunteers?"

In typical goblin fashion, they all volunteer Gneb. He rolls his eyes and heads in. He skulks over the fence and slithers past the patrol grounds. He looks around for a second and waves the next goblin over.

After a bit, it's your turn.

When its your turn to get waved over... the trolls lope along with you. You were hoping to save them for last. Still, there were no complications. You were nervous the whole time, but the trolls didn't draw any unwarranted attention. Wow, these guards must be slackers! After the guard path there was a steep incline down towards the quarry. A bunch of goblins were on it. You look up, and wave the duergar in.

They also make it in without much incident. Well, that was the hard part. Time for the rest! You make a series of hand signals that you hope conveys the idea of: "Spread out, knick expensive looking stuff, take out important looking people, and set explosives on anything that looks like it ought blow up."

A couple people looked at you confused, but fanned out with the rest of them. Oh, well! Not healthy to worry too much about that.

You and the trolls quickly head to what looks like the miner's barracks. The sounds of people working in the quarry still sound out in the night air. At least the miners aren't as slack as their guards. It would just be too embarrassing otherwise.

You get over near the barracks without getting stopped. The trolls are sniffing heavily. Sounds like they've noticed someone. Thanks to them, you notice a guard before he notices you. One of the trolls tears into him. You hope the sounds of bone cracking don't wake anyone up!

You got some time before the bombs go off, and you're near the barracks.

>Try to find their storehouse and loot the place before anyone else gets there.

Well, you are pretty curious what this place is about. Seems like a regular old quarry wouldn't cause this much fuss with an elemental, right? What's the deal here? Sounds like this place started up recently, but its been excavated HARD. Plus, there is a ton of adventurers and guards.

This whole place is suspicious as heck. You figure you oughta get some answers. And the only way to do that is ask someone important. And what is the best way to find someone important? You think hard. Well. Probably by the size of their hat? Usually only really important people get a big hat. This is the best solution you come up with.

You glance around the quarry. You don't even see your boys sneaking about, so they must be doing a god job. You see a couple of people yelling at the workers near a lit up entrance. Back up the quarry you see a bunch of guards saluting what looks like their boss. The Quarry boss is a Half-Orc lookin guy clad in leather with a wicked looking whip that crackles with energy, and a dagger on his hip. The guard captain is a dwarf woman with a glowing mace and a thick shield.

They both look pretty tough. But you got trolls with you. Which one do you go for? You'll obviously wait till they are somewhat alone.

>Half-Orc Boss
>Dwarven Guard Captain
>>
>>29785846
>Dwarven Guard Captain
Dwarfs got a better understanding of all this Earth element shit compared to Half-Orcs.
>>
>>29785846
>Half-Orc Boss
The boss of the operation has to know what's going on. The guard captain may just be here to be a captain of the guard and kept out of the loop.
>>
>>29785846
>Dwarven Guard Captain
The Orc seems like a stupid bully (not that we're prejudiced or anything), probably won't know much.
>>
>>29785846
>Half-Orc Boss
>>
>>29785934
Eh, good enough reasoning. I'll second.
>>
Alright. Boss it is.
>>
He's pretty far down there... but you think you can grab him. You don't know how much longer you have till the second stage of the operation begins, so you start heading for him right away in a snap decision. If you want to find out about the mine, best person to ask is the guy in charge of it, right? Simple stuff!

The trolls lope along with you. You'd worry about keeping the glint of your sword down but you honestly have never polished it so its pretty grimy anyway. It isn't like you need to maintain its edge. Still, you encounter and dispatch a couple more guards on the way down. By the time you reach the bottom of the pit, the quarry boss is readying for a break. The trolls blend into the shadows well, and you hide behind them as you watch the pit boss for a bit. He calls an end to the shift and starts heading off in a direction.

Now's your chance to nab him!

Shax, Small Guys, Dwarf Crew. Shax's kidnapping, then general sneakiness/progress of the other crews.
>>
A troll gets on him before he knows what is happening and drags him to the shadows. You smack him good in the head with the flat of your sword and quickly gag him. A troll grabs his arm and starts chewing on it. You hiss for it to stop. The troll nibbles it a little. You smack it on the nose. It whimpers a bit and drops the arm.

One of the trolls throws the half orc over his shoulder and you start climbing the quarry when you hear a voice shout out. "Sorry lass, they found us! I'm blowin' the place!" Oh, crap! An explosion rocks the quarry, making you fall to your knees with a violent quake. Shortly thereafter several other blasts go off. Well, this has all gone to hell. You hear yelling and the sounds of combat up top.

"We gotta hoof it, you two!" It is a good thing you grabbed this guy when you did. You scrabble up the rocks and make no pretense to hide yourself, and notice other goblins doing the same. Looks like most of the workers are groggy or dead already.

You get to the top level of the excavation and see the golems, kuo-toa, and big guys attempting to overwhelm the defenses. The guards were all woken up by the explosions and are putting up a good defense. There are maybe fifteen up there. Enough to give your boys some trouble. You see a fish guy go down, burbling, and Truz catches a bad hit. Well, they probably aren't dead? You and the trolls slam into the back of the gaurds, turning the skirmish into a melee. Before long the rest of the stealth crew join in, including some soot covered dwarves. Looks like they're all accounted for, though Mani looks like he's covered in nasty cuts.

It's getting crazy in here! You see the dwarf woman in the back rallying some more troops. But, you aren't sure if the boys here need you more.

>Go after the captain yourself. Take a troll with you. Get the other troll with the captive back into the forest.

Things are getting pretty hairy! You knock over a guard or two with your sword when you notice that the captain is getting some men organized. You got them on the back foot now, and that is the only reason you've got a chance. Can't really give them time to get organized.

You wave at the troll that is laying into some guardsmen to come with you, and start charging for the captain. You start spinning on the balls of your feet, doing the same wobbly spin that you're accustomed to and crash through some guards, sending them flying. A look of pure astonishment is on the faces of those you fly past. The captain manages to catch your blade on her shield, and gets knocked on her back, your blade heavily damaging the shield in the process before thudding into the ground. Uh-oh. It's wedged in there pretty good.

A troll comes rampaging through the off kilter guards towards you, and tries to keep them off your back. Looks like you've got a little bit of breathing room.

>Catch your breath. Start spinning again! Let's bowl this captain over.
>She caught it the first time, no reason to expect her to get hit by it a second time. You don't know how long the troll can hold these guys off. Help him finish the few remaining guards and team up on the captain.

Well, she's down for the count. And this small group of guards are disoriented. Perfect time to get to work! It takes some effort, but you heave and ho and pull the sword out of the ground before crashing into a guard. You and the troll both manage to take care of two guards before they get their wits back about them.

The captain seems to have gotten her wind back, but she only has three guys left to help her. You chance a glance over your shoulder. Looks like you've got some wounded, but your boys are finishing up what's left of the guard crew. That's good. You wonder how long it will take, though. You ready yourself for one last round of combat!

No time like the present! You kick off the ground and go charging in to the line. With a wide sweep you knock aside two guards with a sickening crunch. Shortly thereafter, the troll barrells into another guard and starts feasting on him. This dude is always eating people. You think you'll call him Snacky.

>Minion Talent Unlocked! Troll 1 (Now Named SNACKY) - CONNOISSEUR OF FLESH. Ever since coming to the surface, Snacky has experienced a wide pallette of food. His taste has grown and nly the finest of meats will do. The finest being any meat at all! This troll will almost always eat first and ask questions later.

Wow what a gross talent. The guard captain's eyes narrow before she charges in, quickly getting inside your guard and slamming you with her shield. You stumble a bit and fall backwards, wide eyed. These stupid dwarves are always doing that! Still, your sparring before has taught you to start rolling immediately. Your vision swims as the mace smashes into your shoulder, luckily avoiding a serious hit. You bring the sword up as a shield to catch another blow, before fending the dwarf off with a wild swing. When she's back outside your range, you skip back a few steps and wind up a roundhouse blow.

The captain futilely puts up her shield, having it blasted to bits before your spin catches her in the hip and she goes down with a harsh shout. She's down and out for good.

The boys seem to have come out on top for now, and the guards are all broken. Whoop is tending to the wounded. Let the looting commence!

I kind of want Wary Tortoise Stance since we don't seem to be good at defending but I'm up for any of the abilities in the Bein' da Boss tree.
>>
>>29788221
Monkey Grip or Evil Good sound good to me.
>>
Looting it is! Writing.
>>
>>29788252

As much as I despise specializing, Monkey Grip seems to work with our haphazard way of fighting. We also benefit from having a QM that is willing to work with us, rather than against us.

Evil Good seems like the best choice for now

Why Monkey Grip though? How will that benefit combat more then, say, MEGATON SKY HAMMER?

>>
>>29788309
Evil Good pretty great
>>
>>29788221
I agree on "Dat's our Boss!" when we're in a group it really adds up. And it just happens passively in combat.
>>
I kind of wish we'd get points more organically.

Like combat leads to ability points for the combat tree, diplomacy leads to points for the diplomacy tree, and Goblining(?) leads to points for the monster tree.

Less of an argument and our progression would make more sense.
>>
>>29788379

That's a good point! I'll actually do this in the future.

Sorry, please bear with me as I learn!
>>
>>29788347
Nobody expects a goblin to two-hand a greatsword, let alone one-hand it. Also allows for more manoeuvrability and unpredictability (switching hands).
>>
>>29788379
>Less of an argument
That's probably the biggest benefit to what you suggest.
>>
>>29788347

I am largely ok with any choice we make at this stage as they all work with how we've been playing.

I just like the idea of a goblin chick one-handing a greatsword and beating someone in the face like so.
>>
>>29788411
It's okay. I mean, we're sneaking, fighting, and then interrogating after this so it's technically possible for this point to be an all-rounder and it could be hard to decide what point it actually goes to unless you just want to reward a point for whatever was used a lot.

Yeah, we've technically ran the whole gambit of tactics here. We were leading, we were fighting, we were sneaking around and ganging up like proper goblins. It's just a matter of which acts were big enough to reward a point.

Sorta like after reaching a certain Goblining Threshold for your Goblining Exp you get an Ability point?

I guess it would be too much to ask for some retroactive points? Like take into account what we've done up until now and get some points for our new ability tree? A few of the abilities make so much sense it feels like we already have them(Evil Good and Like A Stray Cat, for instance).

That Half-Orc isn't going anyhwere. But the loot? The loot definitely is. You'd be surprised if Gneb and his crew haven't stolen everything not nailed down already. The only saving grace you have is that they can only carry so much. You thought you spotted a nice store house earlier...

You break into the place and look around. It's a bunch of rocks. Not even good rocks, like shiny ones. You lived in a cave for most of your life so you've seen a lot of rocks. And these? These are normal rocks. You're pretty disappointed by it all. It's just too lame!

Then you notice the storage lockers. Oooh, what do they have in here? You expertly pick the lock (you smash the lockers open) and find:

>A cape with magical energies!
>A pair of boots that actually fit you and are comfortable and warm and you are never taking them off.
>Wait these belonged to a miner and are probably covered in miner feet sweat.
>Maybe you'll wash them first.
>But you're leaving them on for now.
>No one will know. So it is fine.
>A few mining picks! Neat!

Other than the sweet magical cape, though, it is mostly just generic clothing. You don't really wanna take any dirty used miner clothing if you don't have to other than these cozy boots that are pretty luxurious if we're being totally honest here.

You're pretty sure the entire quarry has been ripped to shreds, though you've not explored the mine proper.

What's the plan now, boss?

>Interrogate the Half-Orc, and have the boys clear out the mines and surrounding area of survivors.
>Interrogate the Half-Orc, but leave the boys back in case there is something up with the mines.
>Get everyone back to base before someone figures out what is going on out here.
>>
>>29788858
>Interrogate the Half-Orc, but leave the boys back in case there is something up with the mines.

Don't send our boys into the mine without knowing more about what's in it.
>>

>>Interrogate the Half-Orc, but leave the boys back in case there is something up with the mines.
Also, get the elementals with us, who knows maybe we can complete the quest.

We have to do our best to stop word of our presence from spreading. Might be too late what with the big explosions, but eh.

We must wear the cape. Bosses always get capes. And hats. We need a cool hat.
>>
Taking it cautious! Alright. Writing. Let's see what that Half-Orc knows.

Mani, Truz, Rund, and two fish guys are hurt. They aren't gonna die, but they'll be out of commission for a bit. That's good news! You don't know how long their recovery will take. You ask 'em if they're good to ride and it seems so.

You get Milda and Mnar to come with you. Cause Milda is smart and Mnar is scary. With you, it seems like a good interrogation trio. You set up in the guard hut at the perimeter of the quarry, and secure the Half-Orc to a chair. Mnar slaps him awake.

"Tell me what you know!" You shout. This is how interrogations work, right?

"Wh-what the? Who are you? What's happening?" You slap him, but mostly hurt your wrist. His face is tougher than it looks.

Sorely rubbing your wrist, you turn to him and mutter, "Hey, I'm the one asking questions." You try not to whimper, "Now tell me what you know." You're pretty sure you failed.

Milda clears her throat, "What, ah, what she means to say is that she is wondering what you are excavating in particular here." She looks perplexed for a moment as she realizes just how awkward that entire tortured sentence was.

The Half-Orc looks simply bewildered. "No seriously who are you guys?"

The door slams open and a rock golem leans over and looks in. {Hello, have you found any information on why they were digging here, yet?} The Pit Boss yells and struggles to free himself from his chair, only managing to fall over in the process.

"Y-you're the ones in charge of them?! Why have you been attacking us?"

Mnar kicks the half-breed in the face and grunts. "Look, stop askin' questions. This here is a 'terrogation."

{Why does everyone think I'm in your employ? Is there something about me that isn't assertive enough?}

The Half-Orc yells incoherently.

You pinch the bridge of your nose. You're not sure what this does, but it is what Beyto would do in this situation.

>Continued
>>
You kneel down and ask him, "Look, can you just tell me what you were told when you were digging here, Mr. Boss? I would really like to know 'cause its bothering me a lot."

"Look, all I was told was to dig until we found something unusual. That's it! They said I'd know when I found it!" You glance up at the golems.

"Do you know what could be buried down there? It is connected to you, right?"

{It's probably a geomantic power core of some sort. It's latent magical energies probably feed directly into me, strengthening me and growing my power. As they chipped away at my earthen bonds to it, my connection weakened.}

"Aye, lass," Milda chimes in, "I didn't know what it was like on the surface, but this elemental seems several magnitudes stronger than normal. I thought perhaps it was just age. But if there is something outside of that helping him grow, that'd explain it as well."

{It probably drew the attention of some mage in the nearby cities. Many archmages would have the funding to back this sort of excavation, and would gladly seek out an artifact of natural, unshaped power.}

You turn to the half-orc, "Who hired you? Was it some archmage?"

He is panicking, "I don't know about any mages! The company just contracted me out and sent me here. That's all I know, I promise! The pay was good and it was in the middle of nowhere. I didn't know about no elementals or goblins!"

You spend several more minutes asking him questions, but that's all he seems to know. You got a good no prisoner policy going on, so you finish taking care of him and exit the guard hut.

>Continued.
>>
The golems turn to you.

{I'd like to thank you for your assistance, goblin. But there is a matter I'd like to discuss, first. I feel like this excavation was close to completing its goal. A few more days and the core would have been found. If I could, I'd like your permission to take it for myself. It'd probably help me grow a number of times stronger.}

Why is he even telling you this?

{To be honest, I don't have enough power at this time to stop you from seizing it yourself if you wanted to. So treat this as a simple plee. Please allow me to take the geomantic source for myself.}

What's the plan, boss?

>Sure whatever what would I even do with it?

>>
>>29789877

Seems unanimous. Writing!
>>
You shrug. "Okay. I'm not sure what I'd even do with that thing, to be honest." Seriously, do you look like a mage?

The golems bow. {I'm eternally grateful.}

You raise a hand. "But! I'm gonna need you to keep wrecking the place up with me. Give me some golems, too."

They nod. {Of course.}

"And! You owe me some favors of some kind."

{I am unsure as to the nature of this request, but certainly. It is to you whom I owe my continued existence, after all.}

Wow that sounds pretty impressive. Maybe you actually did something really cool? With all that settled, you gather the boys and head back to camp. Two golems stick around to retrieve the core, while the third travels with you. On the way back to camp it approaches you.

{If you don't mind, could we stop by the shrine which houses me? Perhaps I could return a favor there.}

No harm in stopping by. You go with the golem into the shrine and you feel the pulsating presence of the elemental throughout the structure.

{The core is now in my possession, thanks to you. I would enjoy assisting you, but I'm here to offer a boon. I can expend a large amount of energy, small one, to grant you a blessing. It would be years before I gather enough energy to do so again, but I'm willing to do so in order to help give you some small measure of my appreciation. Would you accept this offer?}

Yes this, it also acts as a defensive upgrade once we start using Wary Tortoise Stance. And it should chop through things better now.

Dats Our Boss, Evil Good, and Monkey Grip were the popular ones. I don't remember anything official.
>>
>>29790460
You know, if we took Monkey Grip and Everything Has a Weak Point, we wouldn't have that silly little problem of things getting into our guard again.

Also, the image of dual-wielding a greatsword and a dagger is hilarious.
>>
>>29790503
What about a halberd and greatsword combo? It sounds retarded, therefore it must work.
>>
>>29790503
When your prime strategy is to swing your sword around in large circles dual-wielding a weapon shorter than the one we have is completely pointless.

We'd have to stop swinging to get in range to use our offhand dagger and at that point we've lost the entire reason to use it in our offhand.
>>
Sword. Obviously. Your sword is so cool and it is your lifelong partner and if you could make it stronger that would just be the DREAM.

"Can you please enchant my sword?" You don't want to sound too eager. Your voice probably cracked a little, though! You quickly offer it to the elemental.

It only takes it a few moments, but you can see swirls of energy surrounding your weapon and it slightly lifts up in the air. The metal seems to change... its hues taking a darker shade and the chips and scratches seeming to fade. It gives off a slight smooth sheen. When you grab it you can feel that it is somehow more solid.

Cool. COOL!

{It'll be a bit heavier, of course.}

You didn't notice any change.

{But I guess that isn't a problem?}

Nah, cause you're the boss.

Let's vote on an ability!

I'll end the vote pretty soon, but please cast votes now. I'll see if I can't figure out a more elegant way to do this in the future. On one hand I like having discussion through the thread and then a vote near the end, on the other hand it feels unfair to people who had to sleep during the quest.

You've learned Wary Tortoise Stance!

The recent battles have shown you that your guard is pretty much poop. During your morning routine you begin to incorporate some drills to help snap the sword down in front of you like a shield from nearly any position. Without waving your sword around you like an idiot all the time you'll be able to block and catch a lot more hits! You get really dizzy doing this, though.

NEW ABILITIES UNLOCKED

*Bite of the Snapping Turtle - From the Wary Tortoise stance, you can change your defensive spin into a deadly poke! For some reason it hits really hard, but you're not sure why.

*Absolute Defense of the Box Turtle - You slam the tip of the sword into the ground to form a barrier between you and the enemy. Good for stopping super attacks!

*Tokka Form! - While in the Wary Tortoise Stance, you can lash out with one arm. You won't be able to make a precise strike, but you might be able to land some blows in a crowded environment! - Requires Monkey Grip.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And that's it for tonight folks! I learned a lot of things today, had a lot of fun, and hope you did too.
I appreciate everyone's thoughts and opinions on the ability system, and I always thoroughly enjoy your input on the quest.
My action scenes are still nowhere near where I'd like them to be, so I thank you for your understanding as I try and improve upon them!
