It's cold. It's been very cold. The coldest winter on record has battered your small town following an unusually cold summer. Wind beats into buildings at triple digits, chill falls over windows at night, you wake up each morning to an icy tomb.

If your power hasn't failed or your water hasn't frozen you're still reminded of the cold with the relentless snow, the almost hourly shoveling outside your house to keep it low. The snow is above your waist now, even standing 6'2. You have a dog, a great dane, who fears the cold and it has been an increasing effort getting her to go outside as the temperature drops.

Then there's the forest. You and your friends entered the forest during the summer. Ever since then, nothing's felt right. Houses that sit on the outskirts of the forest have and empty feel, like hollowed out husks. Two houses have been covered by snow, doors blocked in, power shut off, inhabitants labeled as "missing".

Your dog stays away from the forest, forcing you to the front yard every time she goes out. The last few days she won't even sit on your back porch, wanting to rather by next to your side or laying by the front door, staring at it. Your dreams are haunted by what you found in the forest.

Deep in the forest, farther than the paths travel sits a door. Sunk into the ground, locked from the outside sits a metal door. A hulking, warm metal door. Every night, in your dreams, you walk closer to the door, only to wake up as you try to unlock it. The idea of going out comes and goes with the wind and the snow.

It's November 12th, 13 degrees outside. You are off from work today, what do you do?

The dog has not been taken out today, but she is very lethargic and is intent on sitting at the front door today. You fed her earlier but she still hasn't gotten up to eat her food.

Your winter gear is as follows:
Clothes-
Thermal long underwear, shirt and pants
3 sweatshirts, one with a large hole in the left sleeve where your dog chewed through when she was young
Two pairs of snow boots, countless socks
1 large winter windbreaker
1 fall windbreaker
1 thermal winter jacket
3 pairs of gloves

Tools-
1 flood light, 2 torches (large flashlights)
1 flashlight, a small flare
assorted home tools and power tools, most of which the cold has zapped the battery from but they can be restored

Heat Sources-
Central Air holding steady at 85 degrees, should that fail a fireplace that hasn't been used in two years. You have wood just incase but it's sitting outside and needs to be dried before it can be used.

Food-
You have more than enough food to last 1 weeks time before you must venture to the store or risk eating moldy food.

Your dog (who you can name if you want) has stood up and is pacing the front of the house. She seems nervous, but not in a way that seems she wants to go out. She seems uneasy about something approaching the front door. When you step closer all you can hear is the harsh whistling of the wind, and she does anything she can to put herself between you and the door.

Ok, to add onto this, accidently posted before ready. Blockade door with table, then look outside. If there is anything outside, and I MEAN ANYTHING, we will blockade all doors and windows with tables, couches, recliners, and chairs. Hell, unscrew the interior doors, and put those on the windows.

> Turn off wind, play http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=mL5p_mQ3Ibc#t=151

You are able to wrestle your bear of a dog away from the door and into her kennel. (Two names, no decision yet) You grab the small coffee table in your living room, take off the assorted books and magazines sitting on it and are able to prop it up against the door. Ignoring the whimpering of your dog and her rattling in the cage you move close enough to feel the door.

It doesn't feel cold. It feels, almost warm. Just as you touch the door, the wind stops dead. Only the sound of your artificial heating can be heard, blowing much harder than you previously thought. It sounds almost like something is in the air vents, blowing around, but you are more intent on the door at the moment than whatever may be in the vents.

As your eye gets closer to the door the cold is coming back. The warmth that the door was emitting dies off, the icy grip of the wind hits you again. Determined, you stick your eye up to the peephole.

Hand prints. There are hand prints in the snow, leading away from the house. That, is weird enough, but on top of that there is indeed no wind now. Even the snow has stopped. It feels as though the entire world stopped for something, stopped in fear of something.

You take a step back from the door, feeling uneasy and if to be honest, a bit queasy. The whining Courage comes back into your ears, and you realize just how worried your faithful friend is. Walking over you see she is slightly afraid of you, and putting you hand next to the cage causes her to withdrawal from it. A moment goes by before eventually she comes closer, sniffing your hand. You're able to pat her on the head, as she hovers closer to your hand.

The rattling. You look over to the vent, deciding to check into it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=QI_Sy_KiMik#t=66

The closer you get, the louder the strange flicking sounds. You grab a small screwdriver off the kitchen counter and unhook the covering. As you pull the small white piece of metal off you wait to feel the heavy breeze of the heat, then you realize. There is no sound. (Turn off heater on pinwheel) There is no breeze, your heater has died. The cold has taken another victim.

You aren't able to see much into the vent but the sound of whatever was rattling has stopped. You could reach your hand it, or you could find one of the flashlights in your house and do a closer inspection, but it will get cold. Very cold, and soon.

You head into the upstairs of your house, up to your room to find winter clothes. You do a full wardrobe change, changing into a full set of winter clothes getting ready for the oncoming cold.

As you leave your room you close your window, you could have sworn it was closed all day.

You're able to get a small flashlight from the kitchen and lucky for you, the battery still works. You turn the light on, face it up and check inside the vent. The vent reaches very far into the house, almost straight up, but you can clearly see something at the end of the vent.

It looks like a small hole. As if something had cut the hole there, definitely man made. The hole is just big enough to fit your arm through, but it's far too deep in the vent to reach it. Where your vent sits, should someone be looking down the hole, sits right above your couch and coffee table.

At the moment it would be hard to impossible to reach the hole from where you are, but it is possible to find the other side of the vent and you might be able to reach it from there. It feels as though, whenever you look into the hole, you are being watched. The idea of reaching your hand into it disgusts you, but you could probably force yourself too if you had to.

You ere on the side of caution and simply close the vent back up, redoing the screws and trying to put the whole idea on the back of your mind. At least for the moment.

Courage, now seemingly back to herself, is wagging her tail to have you let her out of her cage. As soon as you do, she rushes out of the cage and to the front door, shaking her tail and jumping, motioning to be taken outside.

It's odd to you that she is already totally back to normal. You feel slightly more fuzzy.

The temperature has dropped outside, it is now 9 degrees.

After grabbing a pair of gloves you leash up your loving dog and open your front door. It takes a couple pulls to really get it open as the lock seems to have been frozen shut. Once you are outside the hand prints are almost shoved in your face in the otherwise flat white snow.

The way they head off, it looks like they go off towards the forest. The way they move, they looked as though something was walking on all fours, and hand human hands. It was unnerving, but had to be fake.

Right?

Courage ran out of the house, pulling at your wrist and pulling you off the front step. You don't remember her pulling like that since she was just a pup. Once outside, you decide it's about time to let Courage do her business, but also check your heating unit.

Outside, directly facing the forest, is your heater. As you walk over to it, having to almost wrench Courage over to it you realize that there are hand prints around the heater, as if whatever made them before took a pit stop at your heater. You hear the familiar whimpering of Courage,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=d-_q-md80VQ#t=1025

as she tries to pull you away from the heater, and you listen. As you turn away from it, the hum of the heater kicks back on, and the wind starts up again.

For a split second, you feel as though you see something in the distance, but the wind picks up some snow in your face and you knock it off to being nothing at all.

After Courage is done she sits down by the door. Once you walk into the house and try to pull her in with you, she holds her ground steady. She does not want to go back in.
