Let's get this out of the way: I mean no disrespect to Archelon. I was merely inpsired.

It's been a long trip.

In your home on the northern mounts, living near the Appals (Small, scaled creatures known for their smithing and gunpowder), you received a letter of summons. Precise, careful lettering in black ink, on soft paper that almost reminds you of cloth. A royal letter, a request. A notice of a job opening, a desire for an interview.

Apparently the old guard has fallen - not out of combat, but old age. They need a new one, before another continent catches on that the kingdom has none. Before, old Harold had been a strong match for anything they sent.

The human kingdom is the largest, taking up most of the central continent. It's ruled by a single kind, his advisers managing most of the minutiae, with mayors, answerable to said advisers, running the important but not dramatic small stuff of city affairs. The imperial nature of the kingdom has lead to it being under fire from the many smaller kingdoms on other continents, most believing humans to be rascist and hateful of the other races. Appals, for example, are only barely tolerated for their craft, and even they must sell at a lowered price compared to humans, who do it worse. Otherwise, they face prosecution.

You've been scouted as a guardian for the king's heir. A young man, of noble bearing and even temperament, though a notable (And in the press, annoying) affection for the fairer sex. You never thought yourself worthy of such things, but on reflection, you might be. You were well known in the local dueling rings, a powerful master of several weapons, chief among them...

>A sword, with a style and showmanship unsurpassed.
>A pair of spiked gauntlets and boots, with brutality and strength leaving you untouched.
>A hammer, with broken armor and shield littering every match.
>A staff, with speed and nimble agility.
>A spear and shield, with practical tactics and quick maneuvers.

You were strong, with spiked fists, sabatons, and spear and shield. Magic users feared you, and rightly so - you are gifted in the arts of Magebreaking, the art of sundering connections to the Aether. In doing so, you've learned how to both block magical attacks entirely, and to pierce, on occasion, magical armor. You're a good fit for the job because of this, you speculate, as many enemies of the Human Empire employ magic and miracles.

You take a deep breath as you enter the city. You are asked for your papers.

"What is the purpose of this visit?"
"I'm here to work."
>"Name and Gender, please." he asks. Oh, right, you came in full armor, he probably can't tell...

He nods.
"Saw one or two of your fights by long." he says, referring to a small scrying item keyed to a gem in the roof of the arenas, "You're a damn fine fighter if I may say so myself."

"Thank you." you nod, smiling.

"You know, my shift ends in an hour, so-"

"I said thank you." you manage, nodding at the gate. This is one of the reasons you didn't like the idea of the job. You're... a little famous, and you've worried your greatness in the arena would bring men down on you. And women. And Critters. Though you reprimand yourself for the rascist slur towards nonhumans. You stretch, pondering. You have a full day before your meeting with the king's adviser.

You move to the shrine to Raev, crowned as always by a murder of crows. You kneel there, closing your eyes as you slide down to one knee, touching the earth with your fingertips as you lower your head in deference. You pray for Fate to guide you, and for her to recognize you are here for a job and desire no tangling of relationships - for the sake of the kingdom's stability above all.

You feel wings brush your shoulders, and smile. Ah, she heard. You rise, cricking your neck and getting out of the way for a young man. He nods to you and makes his prayer. As he rises, he turns to you. He's handsome, in a scholarly sense.
"Welcome to Central." he says. "You're something of a new face to this shrine."

"You know everyone who stops by?"

"Most worshippers of Raev are out in the Wilds or small towns." he explains. "Mostly people around here prefer Law." he nods to a small, miniature ivory pillar, an opposite to Raev's black marble obelisk. "My name's Rikard. I'm a priest of the Lady." he says. You shake his hand. "What brings you to this fair city?"

"I'm..."

Not, as long as we stay as a mistress without any legal protections or assurances against his mistreatment of our children then it should be A-OK. We just aren't allowed to marry him since that union will by necessity be political and for the good of the kingdom. I was just confused as to why'd we be interested in the first place.

"I'm Annelin. Just here for a job." you say. He raises an eyebrow as he looks you over.

"Must be one hell of a job."

You sigh.
"It's rough work, sure." you admit. A little tingle in the back of your head reminds you - until your official installation, you probably shouldn't let people find out the old guard is dead.

He nods.
"I'll pray for you. New work is always fraught with danger and nervousness. Mayhaps you will find your day brighter with Raev watching over you."

"I thought she was always associated with the night?"

"Mmmmn, in some senses." he admits. The black marble of her shrine is supposed to emulate a starry night sky, for example. And her greatest story involved bringing together a pair of lovers under the stars. "She does like the night."

"You speak as if from personal experience."

He smiles a little I-know-something-you-don't-know smile, then nods.
"It does sound like that, doesn't it...?" he asks. "Ah. Are you perhaps looking for a place to stay? There is a spare room in our church. No charge."

"Ah, well..." you manage, "I'm going to the castle to see if they'll let me sleep there as a member of the help."

"Ah, and if they don't?"

"I have an inn in mind." you say. A friend of a friend had recommended it. Granted, it was after you served him his posterior properly and publicly, but Jimmy was always nice about that. You rub your side. Damnable maces. "Sorry, I don't mean to snub you."

He waves a hand.
"Don't worry overmuch." he says. "I have company anyway." he turns to leave, and you head to the castle.

Ah - the castle. A massive monument to the power of mankind. With bricks quarried by Ogre strength, architecture devised by Alvin scholars, designs traced by Dra artists, and furnished by Appal woodworkers and smithies.
Truly, a wonder of man. You shake your head. Man had, after all, united those peoples under the banner, red and bloody as it was, of the Human Central Empire. And it was all done in less than five years across a whole continent. You admire the tactics and the speed of the campaign, if nothing else. You scowl a little as you step inside, walking across stone walkways to the gate proper. The castle itself sits apart from the town, on a squat pillar of natural stone - a mountain sheared in half and torn apart by magecraft.

An older gentleman sits at a desk in the lobby, humming to himself and adjusting small reading spectacles. It seems to take an eternity for him to notice you, so you clear your throat. You almost smile as he jumps, papers scattering all over. When he finally settles down, he blinks at you.

"Mistral. You're here early."

"Ah! My apologies. I am William. I am the Royal Assistant, you see, I keep his affairs in order and make certain everything is shipshape, top to bottom!" he says with a great deal of pride.

"I mostly came to look around, but if there's time I would like to get things done as soon as possible."

"Ah. Well. Let me give you a bit of a tour..."

Like most castles, it was built wing by wing - first the main hall, lobby, and the throne room, then the royal chambers, then the praetorian chambers, then the worker chambers. Those comprised the core of the Castle. From there, to the west, one could go to the city. North from the centre of the castle was the kitchens, storerooms, and wine cellar. To the south sat the gardens and the stables. And finally, to the east, the guest chambers and similar, like a miniature additional castle. It takes ten minutes to fully cross, and by the end of the tour, William looks quite tired.

"With all that said, my lady, your accommadations will be with the rest of the Praetorian Guard." he says, "The royal family is, sadly, out today, on holiday. While I am acting in his stead for most matters, he expressed a strong desire to meet you in person. I hear you had a long trip. I think I can afford to shelter you for the day." he says with a kind smile. "Would you like a bath sent up?" he asks. "And if you've any additional questions, do not hesitate to ask!"

"Yes, please." you say with a little smile. "But first - a few questions?"

"Certainly." he says.

"I was wondering if pets are allowed?"

"Depends on what his Majesty allows." he says, shifting. "He hates cats, but rather likes hounds, for example."

"Ah... Any places in the city I should know?" you ask. He pulls out a map, and mumbles quietly, passing his hand over it a few times. A new one appears in a flash of light.
"Damn handy, that spell.." he mutters, as he marks a few locations. "Just north of Law Square in the center is a grand smithy run by an Appal known as Brightness On Shining Blade. Fine Appal, really." he says with a nod. "South of it is the Church Square. All the shrines and churches are gathered there. Near to west of the square is the Arena here." he says. "That's all I know of."

"You go there often?"

"Actually, I watch long. I was the one who scouted you." he says sheepishly. "Your match against Dooran was spectacular."

Ah. A magic user of Fire Conjuration. You rode your shield on a pillar of flame to leap down and pierce his side.

You head up to the room assigned and wait - a young lady delivers your bath soon enough.

Ah, magically heated water. You slide out of your armor and wash yourself, red hair falling over hard shoulders. You have a fair number of scars, one across your back, and one across the back of your hand. Another crosses your lips, and a fourth bisects your ear. The arena was bad for that, healing magic always scars but if you want multiple matches in a week... Well.

You relax as you sit on the bed and dry your hair, soon enough gathering into your full armor again when you hear a crash from the hallway. The window...?

You strap on your spiked sabatons and gauntlets, pick up your spear and shield, and step outside angrily.

Only to find a blond, clueless face look up at you. In unison, you scream:
"INVADERS!"

There's an awkward pause as recognition sets in for you. Though you imagine the Prince has no idea who you are as he steps down from the window and draws his longsword, holding it in a...

er...

His stance is so terrible, you can't even tell what form he's trying to go for - his legs are open to attack, he has no shield, but his free hand is raised, his sword is almost overhead, and he looks very, very nervous.

"Sire." you say, going to one knee. "I am Mistral. I am going to be your bodyguard, but I was allowed to stay -"

"Liar!" he shouts, in a voice you imagine is rather charismatic under other circumstances, but is nervous and afraid in this one. You catch it on your shield -
>Perk activated: Willing Iron
- And push it away, embedding it solidly in the wall. He tries to pull it out.

"Sire, calm yourself. What are you even doing here? If you want to verify my story, you're free to downstairs, but... Did you climb in the window? How?"

He finally pulls the sword free, frowning at the gouge in the wall that steadily heals itself. He tosses his hair with a sigh.
"Practice, my dear."

Distantly, you hear cries of anger from below the window. You peer outside to see a balding man in pants and an apron shaking a fist and yelling about daughters. You look back at the Prince, who whistles and scratches the back of his head.

"I'm not your 'dear'." you manage. He looks maybe 18, tops. "Why are you back early, again?"

"Because... Well, I have my reasons! Royal reasons. Secret."

"Right. Well. Let's go talk to William and see what to do about this, yeah?" you ask.
"There's nothing to be done." the prince asserts, his tone royal, now. "I'm home, secure, and-"

A stone strikes the window, which has already repaired itself. It goes to work again. "Right. To William, then." he relents, as you lead the way. "...Have you a name?"

"My arena name is Mistral. For now, that's all that needs to be exchanged between us, Sire." you say stiffly as you lead him to the lobby. William visibly sighs as Hile tries to justify splitting off from the royal party on holiday.

Eventually...

"It was a woman, wasn't it? Did you at least remember her name so we can send an apology?"

"Er... Things were rather, uhm, passionate, and... Well, one thing lead to another, you see, and..."

"You didn't even get her name, sire?"

"Nnnnno." he says, laughing nervously.

"...Just head up to your room, sire." he grumbles. "Your father will hear of this. Hile waves it off as he leaves.

"Damn fool boy! I was but a scribe when he was born, and he was a menace even then! Keeping her lady up at all hours! Bless her heart, she never wanted a nursemaid, very dutiful, but damnation if he didn't make her tempted."

"Is he always like that?"

"Oh, yes, yes. Very much so." William says. "Well, in the abscence of the king, and no guard, I'm afraid I will have to issue you the paired rings now." he grumbles. "Congratulations, you are now a guardian of the Hile royal line," he says, putting a ring in your hand. "Should the sire ever come to harm, the ring will heat. Any further harm will have you teleported in a few seconds. Do try and be prepared at all times, or remove it when you are... less than decent. "I'll deliver his ring to him." you say, sliding yours on. You feel a bit more energetic than before. Probably just the magic at work. "But first, was there anything suspicious about the old gaurd's death?"

"That he didn't die fighting, I suppose. The old fool loved nothing more than to serve." William says. "We checked many different magics and poisons. Nothing came up positive. No wounds or anything. He just... died." William shrugs. "Likely from old age. He was in his eighties."

"Eighties! And he was still fighting?!"

William nods.
"More magic than man at that point, but his mind was sharp as Clown's needles." he says. "Anyway. If you want, I'll take you to see his grave." he says. "Might help you understand the whole duty." he says. "In any case. Go deliver that ring, yes?"

You nod, heading up the stairs and knocking at his door. He opens it, now dressed more casually in a brown tunic and pants. He doesn't look so offensively... royal, now, and with mussed hair...

Oh.

"You're pretending at being a commoner, aren't you." you say flatly.

"Yes. Old Donad did it."

"Yes, but he tried to look like a beggar and listen to gossip. It was how he stopped the Appal Insurgency in its infancy. You're just chasing skirts."

"Not just that!"

"Oh?"

He smirks.
"Sometimes they wear pants. Very progressive ladies these days."

You toss him his ring as you roll your eyes. "There you go."

"Thank you, milady."

"I'm not your lady."

"So you keep saying." he says, slipping it on.

You head down to William.
"So would you like to see the grave now, or...?"

"Now would be fine." you say, nodding as he leads you into the undercroft. It's a deep catacombs - no magic has yet to prevent aging just yet. You pass by walls of kings and guards, rows of skulls for particular workers (On one plaque, you note, a servant who took a crossbow bolt for the then-king, here immortalized and his family now nobles), and other similar things. Even beloved family hounds, their long skulls set in a line as well, names on plaques.

Finally, he stops you.
"Here you are. Harold Bright's grave." he says.

You look upon it, wondering at the cause of his death. "I'm not sure what you hope to learn here, but..." he sighs. "I very much doubt an assassination, or anything like that.

"Did he have a special weapon, of any sort?"

"Mmmn, not really. Just Appal steel." he says, shrugging. "Nothing much else he used." you stand there for a moment. In sixty, seventy years, this is you. It chills a little and brings you to realize it, but you are lead back to the lobby, where you have the rest of the day free.

You head into town, making your way through the crowds to eventually make your way to the smithy. It's a nice place, a sight better than your old one. You knock on the door, and a small creature waddles out.
"Resn'ble rates, miss." it says. It's about three feet tall, covered in black scales, and has heavy white fluff on its head stretching down its back. A long nose and bright green eyes stare you down.
"Hi, I was..."

>How large is the royal family?
It's extended. I need to do some research on succession.

>Bashing people in the face with our shield activates Hammerblow, right?
Yep! Almost all weapon perks are actually weapon agnostic!

>What exactly does it mean in Bloodmind by tripling the result on the next attack?
The attack roll, if it would otherwise miss. The damage roll, if not.

>Can we earn more perks through play?
Yep! But don't expect them to come easily.

Gotta say, thanks for running. I'm enjoying the quest, and 'm really liking the way you write.

What's our past like? Or is that something we're going to decide later?

>Weapon agnostic
Does that mean that, say we had no weapons, we could Pierce magical defenses with our bare hands, or possibly deflect or guard directed spells with our gauntlets?
>>
>>29785197
>Does that mean that, say we had no weapons, we could Pierce magical defenses with our bare hands, or possibly deflect or guard directed spells with our gauntlets?

So long as you have iron you are using to attack, yes to both.

>>29785188

Magebreakers study magic like mages do, but don't learn spells. Instead, they learn to break it.

Both builders and demolitionists learn architecture, after all.

In that sense, Magebreakers are very strong, and understand magic on a level that its primary users do as well.

>>29785165

>As a bodyguard are we allowed to bitchslap Prince Hile if he's being an ass?

I'd avoid it.
>>
>>29785082
You do good OP, liking this Quest a lot
how does magic/antimagic work in this setting?
>>
>>29785082
Thanks OP came in not sure what to expect and left pleasantly surprised.
>>
>>29785253
If a spell were like a building, magicians would be like builders and construction workers, while magebreakers would be like demolitionists. Both know about magic deeply, but for opposing purposes.
>>
>>29785275
... So while we're not mages, per se, we still use and manipulate magic in order to destroy it.
Does that also mean that we could learn simple spells like, say, making ourselves faster or stronger? Though I assume using magebreaking abilities would disable those kinds of spells.
>>
>>29785275
This is delightful.
>>
>>29785165
>How big is the human kingdom? What's the weather and the culture like? What are its most important neighbors?
It spans the whole continent. Its touch is not equal - as you near the center of the continent, there are less humanoids and more humans. The weather varies - Central City is very mild, but some of the areas in the Kingdom are horribly tempestuous and others still are very hot.

The most important neighbors are the other continents, which you'll learn of later.

>>29785289
Unfortunately, learning to BREAK magic, and learning to USE magic are somewhat different. You'd be starting at square one, but you'd learn faster.
>>
>>29785249
Since we're wearing gauntlets does that mean we can block magical attacks by punching them? Because if so that's magnificent.

Can you tell us what the other perks would have been?
>>
>>29785338
what does this prince think of ADVENTURE?
>>
>>29785388
>Mage throws a fireball
>Mistral punches the fireball, causing it to unravel in a burst of flame-- albeit severely weakened.
>Mage's eyes widen as an armored guardian steps out of the flame still smouldering. Throws another fireball.
>Mistral catches it in an armored gauntlet.
>Mage pisses self. Runs.
>>
>>29785388
>Since we're wearing gauntlets does that mean we can block magical attacks by punching them?
Assuming you succeed a defensive check, yes.

>Can you tell us what the other perks would have been?

The system is that you learn two weapons well, and those determine your 'build'. I actually came up with the perks off the top of my head, but each weapon has a 'Mind' perk, a 'Magic' perk, and a 'Might' perk. So smart fighters learn more 'Mind' Perks, which let them mess with dice, Magebreakers learn magic perks (The sword one lets you cut spells, for example), and powerful fighters learn 'might' perks, which affect damage rolls and the results of damage.
>>
>>29785446
It says fully deflect directed spells, so we might be able to punch that fireball right back at the mage.
>>
>>29785476
Yep. Though it's a lot easier to play fireball tennis if you've a large, flat surface.

The best Magebreakers work with a mage, so they can do crazy shit like spiking a fireball as if they're playing volleyball.
>>
>>29785616
>magebro to go with Antimage powers

Clap clap, because you've worked out a way for anti-magic powers, which normally always backfire and mean magic users run away from the MC, to play nicely with mages.
>>
>>29784994
Thanks, I'm definitely following this one.
>>
>>29785616
Does the Prince know magic? Because he certainly isn't much of a swordsman.

Though I will admit he is good at climbing and running.
