>Strange things are afoot at the circle cake
The night sky, black and cold, full of innumerable stars, is disrupted by a single flash of light, and a boom that is almost unto thunder for those close by. The people beneath it look up, as if they had been called to attention. For a moment, they think nothing of it. Almost as if they could never even dream of what it meant. Soon though, their minds are refreshed to the horrors that are signaled by it.

Men pour from alleys, garbed in chain and wielding little buts pikes and shortswords, some lucky to get crossbows and slings. They capture anything that wears decoration, and drag it into the shadows, bleeding anything or anyone that tries to halt the momentum of the black evening. Blood drips, somewhere in the city. The authorities, or those who are still left after the first wave, begin mounting a defense centered around the upper quarter. Seeing so many men withdrawn from their protection only serves to sharpen the anger that the common folk have for the well-off. You watch as police run here and there, trying to keep up with the rebels. After people come in off of the streets, they simply break in through windows, and ram doors to get to what they want. It's unfortunate that so many people must be slain to achieve a simple goal, but it is ultimately inevitable.

Scipio informs you that the exiles are growing restless waiting for the order to advance. Moving now would mean contesting the police in the street, but perhaps it is better than giving your opposition more time to think.

You tell Scipio to prepare the exiles to mobilize. He nods and gives the signal. They begin pouring out from behind that building serving as your cover, armed with sword and shield, and in some cases halberd. The best weapons to the best fighter. You descend from the rooftop lookout and hit the cold street, looking up to the capitol building in the distance. The exiles form up behind you, and you begin a march forward. It isn't long before you come to a small police blockade. The officers there shake in fear of the fighting force you've got tagging along, but nobly refuse to give up the ground, aiming crossbows at you. Scipio steps in front of you, guarding you against them. You outnumber them 8 to 1.

You reach down where you stand and look around for something small. You find a chunk of brick, and Atomize it before lobbing it at the blockade. It hits the ground, and the officers are unsure what to do with it. Some of them move back, but not enough to avoid the blast when it occurs. Though small, it is enough to send the surviving police off in a panicked run, and once they've cleared out, you lead the exiles up through the streets once again. You get quite far before reaching the upper quarter, at which point the defenses of the town begin showing themselves again. This time the men standing against you are nearly half of your number, but they are armed well and clearly of a mind to stop you dead in your tracks.

You cut through two or three of them, and Scipio near about cleaves four of them in half with a single swing.

You don your hood and search for Scipio, while still hacking apart the police who come at you. You find him pinning down one of the commanding officers with his boot, and tell him that he has command over the exiles until they enter the building. When he asks why, you explain that you're going to enter ahead and try to clear the building as much as you can for their entrance, since when they come inside, they'll be bottlenecked. He nods and assumes control of the field. You yourself Beast into a lizard and make your way up the wall of the building and enter through a cracked window.

Inside, several dozen men have barricaded the door, and are themselves sat behind sandbags with crossbows to await the incoming forces. If they are forced to move through this, the exiles won't last. You search among the corpses of the police to try to find something that can help you. The first few bodies, normal officers, produce nothing but loose coins and lint. After a while of searching though, you find a vial of Red, probably someone's stash. It isn't much, but it's enough to fix the wound in your chest. You give the order to fall back for now. The men seem less than exited, but none of them wants to try to take the building alone either. You make your way back down the road and duck into a restaurant. The men start breaking into the kitchen and taking snacks. You think about stopping them, but at this point the morale boost can only help. You forbid them from having any more than a glass of drink though.

You send someone to call in the forces currently making trouble in the city. You should have over a hundred arms in a few minutes. While waiting, you test to see if your power is at full strength. It seems everything is back in order, but you still aren't completely sure what caused them to fail in the first place. You don't doubt that a country like this may have some weapon to halt magic temporarily, but it would be good to know exactly what it is and how it works.

Your own reinforcements find their way in, and the exiles prepare to move out again. Scipio asks what your next move is.

The two of you struggle, kicking and twisting in the air for a brief few moments, and then you both hit the ground with a thud and a crack. Your arm is in pain, you landed right on it, and when you move you know your shoulder is dislocated, possibly even fractured. "Bit of a booboo yeah? No worries, I'll pop it right back in for you."

You ask her about her rule over the Republic.

"It's not all that strange. I was democratically elected by the people. Ten times running. It doesn't hurt that all my opponents met with unfortunate and completely unpreventable accidents. You'd be surprised how unstable a house can be when someone burns the joists in their roof."

"So you know more than spells that burn things up. That's good. If you must know, the fort wasn't even my idea. It was a purely strategic move. The Empire wishes to rule from one ocean to the other, stretching across the continent. I am in their way. My generals recommended putting up a defense in the desert, where we had the advantage. There are better games with dual casting, come on Rags.

Still, use volt, the 'dual' part was just due to rule of cool

Rags, one last thing. When she comes in contact with us again, immediately use Atom on her.

You rush at Noire, as she begins summoning her icy spikes again. You roll out of their way, covering your plan as a lack of Step. Several times you are cut deep by the jagged ice, but slowly you approach her, Atomizing the floor as you go. She doesn't seem to catch on, and soon you are nearly face to face with her. You reach out with both hands, and try to grab onto her. You catch her coat, and Atomize it, just before you are pushed back again. You slide across the frozen floor, ice cutting through your jerkin and nicking your back. When you come to a halt, you feel yourself hoisted into the air, then propelled backward again, straight into the wall. You hit it with immense force, and you can feel a rib crack just before you slide down and onto the floor behind one of the desks.

"I'm getting quite tired of this game now. Come out and let's finish it, so I can go home."

You hear a loud boom, and the sound of wooden shrapnel, but once the echo clears, there is only mild coughing from her.

You stay behind the desks, and do your best to keep quiet.

"Fine, if you won't come out, I'll just find you."

You hear the desk near you begin to rattle, and you crawl away as quick as you can. It is yanked out of the ground, and pulled toward the center of the room. The desk next to it follows, then the next, then the next. You keep moving, ducking behind desks to kill time.

"Damn you, you little rat! Just come out! If you're out of spell then just face death like a man!"

You charge up the next desk to go, just in time to duck behind another as it flies. You taunt Noire, enraging her to the point of screaming. The charge on the floor is nearly up, but so far your Atom spells have been countered by something she's casting on herself. You have to make sure that she is casting something when they go off, so she won't have time to protect herself from the explosion.

You pop out from behind the desk posing dramatically as you Shine. You don't look, but can hear the raging scream as Noire stomps on the ground, sending waves of ice surging throughout the room. Just as the ice is about to hit you, you Step out, just to outside the building. There is a great explosion, collapsing most of the backside of the capitol building, and sending several chunks of it flying all around the area. You can feel the force take you off your feet, knocking you flat on your rear as you watch the place go up. You keep your eye on it, wary that Noire may have somehow lived. But after a few minutes, you feel convinced.

Scipio will come soon to see if you lived.

Scipio and the remaining forces catch up with you outside the smoking pile of rubble. He asks how things went, and you point over to the aforementioned pile. He smiles and pats you on the back. You ask him and the men to help you sift through the debris to confirm the death.

The confirmation comes in the form of a thin spread of political paste beneath the collapsed roof. There really is no doubt. You're a killer and a revolutionary now. You can't say you never saw this coming in your youth. Scipio asks what you plan to do now. You think for a moment.

"My job's done. I'll leave it to the people to make of it what they will."

Let's go home to Helda and pack up. Go to the Empire and find our mom.
>>
>>29794121
You leave the people of the Republic to clean up the mess. None of the men in attendance seem quite glad to hear that you're leaving, but you make no time for their petty complaints and Step back home to Helda. The mansion is completely silent. It still feels so lonely in the house with Arco gone. You almost feel like the house is a part of him, even without him in it. You walk through the foyer, taking in the familiarity of everything. You can tell that Helda took the time to unpack things again, if only a few. You walk the halls and feel the walls, smelling, hearing, and feeling everything that made this place home. When you get to the bedroom, you find Helda fast asleep.

You assure her that this won't be a problem again anytime soon. She curls up next to you and wraps her arms around your next, running one hand down the collar of your shirt.

"Well, tomorrow I'll wash you, and you can tell me all about how work went."

The two of you spend that night together, and then the next two days resting and recuperating, while also unpacking all the contents of the handbag, refilling the lab and house. After everything is settled, you inform Helda that you plan to locate your mother in the Empire soon. Helda seems fidgety upon hearing this.

The next day the two of you return to the Ranger outpost in the Feywood in order to receive directions to your mother's location. The Rangers greet you warmly, offering you drinks before you set off.

And now Daniel comes to see us again, and he thinks of what could've been.

You reminisce with the Rangers, and tell them about the things you've been up to since leaving. You skirt around the issue of blowing up a capitol building and assassinating a world leader, but the message is on point. After you and Helda have had your fill, you bid them goodbye and make your way to the Empire.

You arrive on a cold morning in a small farming village just within the border. The ground is covered in a light blanket of snow, just like the day you left home. The people of the town mind their own business for the most part, but they can't help but look as you pass. It isn't every day a southern woman in such a "flattering" dress and a man in wizard's regalia stroll through the town arm in arm, after all. Helda chose her dress specifically to, as she put it, 'accentuate her womanly features'. She seemed convinced that your mother would judge her like meat, and so chose to flaunt her prime cuts. You could do nothing to dissuade her.

You ask around town for your mother by description. It seems she was quiet after coming here, but many people do seem to know her for her hunting. It's comforting to know she hasn't changed too much. You arrive at her door just before noon. The house is silent. Helda looks up at you, expectingly.

You raise your hand and gently tap on the door with your knuckles. You hear a voice from inside, and footsteps. You heart is racing, and Helda squeezes your arm so tight you can feel her heartbeat too. There is a short pause between when the footsteps stop at the door and when it slides open. It lasts only a moment, but feels like hours. When the door clears the way, you see before you a woman who's age is reflected in her worried face. New wrinkles have sprung up, but you can surely see the face of the woman who raised you still beneath it. At first, she only stares at you, expecting a greeting of some sort. But then, as you smile at her, her expression slowly turns from apathetic to shocked. Her hands go up to her mouth, and you hear a short gasp for air. She steps back into the house and nearly trips.

You take your mother in your free arm and hold her as she sobs into your shirt. You don't mind the tears much, but the runny nose seems a bit much. She asks you how you got out of the Feywood, and you assure her you'll explain every last detail of the past seven years just as soon as you're all seated and comfortable. You sit while Helda starts a fresh pot of coffee for all three of you. You tell your mother about becoming a familiar, though don't mention to whom, and about studying magic. You tell her about the lycan's, the black beret (skipping the kiss), the trek to the desert, and the battle at the Republic capitol. She listens intently, tearing up the whole time. When the coffee is dry, and your stories told, your mother smiles. She explains how good it is to have you back again.

"By the way, I'm sorry to ask but who exactly is this woman?" she says, turning to see Helda, who blushes slightly.

Your mother wrinkles her brow looking at Helda. Her gaze moves up and down, almost seeming to scan her for flaws. Helda sits up straight with her chin up and her chest out. You sit with your face in your hands. After, your mother offers to clear the cups, and asks you to help her in the kitchen. You follow, and she pulls you into a corner of the room.

"I know it's been seven years, but I never expected you to come to me with a girl from the south. Still, looking at those hips I can see why you picked her." You remind her that Helda was the one who bought you. "Really? Huh. I guess southerners must be into that kind of thing. Wait, seven years ago, she bought you? And you didn't bring my grandkids to see me? Don't tell me you can't perform! Not my son! Not after what your father used to-er, I mean, what's the problem?"

You tell your mother about Helda's condition, and how it came about. She listens closely, and you can see her eyes lose a certain sparkle when you explain that you won't be able to have blood children. She seems disappointed, but assures you that your happiness is more important than a grandchild to her. Even through this, though, you feel a little sting of longing.

The three of you return to the living room and talk a while longer. In time, you grow tired, and decide to head home. Your mother seems shocked when she hears you plan to go all the way back just to sleep, but you show her just how easy it is. You Drag her to the mansion, and give her a grand tour of the place. Helda even offers to let her stay with you, but she refuses, not wanting to 'mess up your love nest'. Before you bring her back home, your mother shakes hands with Helda.

"Take care of my boy now. And make sure he gets some of this now and then." She places her hands on Helda's waist and runs them down her hips and back up. "If he's anything like his father, he'll turn into a wild animal if you starve him too long." Again, you can only hide your face in your hands.

Owain, who came to become known as the sage of the Mesa Arco, lived a long and eventful life. His battle at the Republic's capitol wasn't the last time he fought to such a dramatic and messy end, but it certainly was the most well remembered. He grew to learn more about the nature of magic, and even went on to create several spells and establish a few theories on magic that are still praised by scholars. He and his lifelong companion, Helda of the Feywood, were never known to have children through their own loins, though certainly not for lack of opportunity. They did, however, come to take in a pair of orphaned twins from a small town in the north. Only one of these twins did much of note, when she joined the Rangers and was one of the founders of a new unarmed fighting technique that the Rangers use to this day.

As an old man, Owain looked back on his life with quiet satisfaction. Magic worked wonders for both him and Helda, who each lived to nearly four-hundred years, and reportedly only greyed in the last decade or so. They also reportedly spent three years on a trip around the globe, attempting to make love in public places as a sort of strange thrill game when they were two-hundred sum years old.

But that is another story.
>>
>>29795448
That wraps up the story. I hope you had as much fun playing and reading as I had writing. There probably won't be a new thread for a while, while I get things straightened out and come up with ideas. As usual, if there's anything you'd like me to consider, I'm open to suggestions.

Love you all, thanks for playing.
>>
>>29795490
Wonderful quest, Rags. It's a shame there won't be a new one for a while but I do understand. Hopefully whatever you need straightened out does so quickly. I'll see you in the next quest, love you man.
>>
>>29795490
This was a good thread. Hope you get some well deserved rest. By the way, for next time, I have two idea. Perhaps we could do it in a sort of steampunk setting, where technology and magic are at each other's throats. Or, we could explore a world that has been drowned in water, with the only pieces of land still left being what used to be mountain ranges.
>>
>>29795518
Jeez, man. That's quite a timeskip. Though I guess I could set it in a whole new world, it's not like there's a rule against it. Also I'm pretty sure that second one is just Windwaker, but I love Windwaker so maybe!

>>29795515
It's nothing major. I just want to get some work done and spend time with the child for a while.
