QM posts from work again edition.
Last thread: suptg.thisisnotatrueending.org/archive/29738192

Same story as last time. Will post with all my speed, but I am on a mobile device.

________
What.

You think you heard her wrong, but you could swear you heard those words come from her mouth. Mage? Possible recruit? Your brain is trying not to implode as you stare at Lindy, trying to comprehend what was going on. Looking to the side at your friends, you see similar reactions.

Exept for from Toshiiro, but he has always been a sort of zen level of calm.

You envy hm as you turn back, not wanting to miss much else of the speech, especially with the crowd murmuring as it was. "I Know it must come as a shock that magic exsists, but it does." the admrial said, pressing a button ona remote.

A screen came down, and started showing some footage from the Uminari Incidents that happened closer to when you where ten or so.

You see the footage zoom closer, the view too shakey for even a faked shakey cam video. Soon enough you see a pin light lance out from somewhere as the video finally focuses on a young girl standing in mid air on a spinning dis made of light amd...runes you think.

"This is footage of an incident about eight years ago. It was our first real clue that your planet, Earth, even had a mage population, let alone a sizeable one. The girl jere is now an instructor in our military boot camp, as well as a delegate between our Time Space Administration Bureau and your national government.

"At this time, I am going to see each of you separately to discuss your opfions, as well answer questions." she finishes, stepping down and movng to a different room as the headmaster starts calling a name. You aren't paying attention to that as you....

Chat with our friends, get their impressions of the situation and especially the people who have been telling us about this.

Be suspicious of what they're offering, ask yourself and your friends what they're standing to gain from this.

"That's an ostentatious name, does that mean you guys regulate how the multiverse works?"

As you go to say this, one of the student council members stands up. He looks dead on at the headmaster, practically yelling this over the din. As Admiral Harlown was already gone, another one stood and took the podium.

"I am sorry that our name seems so outlandish, but we work more to try and prevent dimensional disasters, like the one that was filmed here. If it was not for a civilian like yourself, what we called The Jewel Seed Incident would have been worse then simply rumors of half a city over taken by plants." he said professionally, his voice never rising above an even tone. "To be honest, we are more like a combination of a detective firm, a SWAT team, and a military."

Looking to your friends, you see Kylie gulping, and Kyou looking back at you with a mixture of disbelief and....hope.

"Stay calm, Kyou." you tell him, getting a slightly disappointed look from him. "We don't even know if they are on the level or not. Keep an open mind, but be on guard. Something smells weird."

He and Toshiiro nod, as you give thanks that your brain goes to mathematical logic....usually. If you were honest with yourself, you have no idea what to think, or even how to think about this.

It is almost like seven year old you finally got his wish.

Before Kylie can speak up, you hear your name called. "Moriyama Takato, please come to the interview room." Reaching over, you pat her reassuringly on the shoulder before getting up and going.

Inside the cozy room you see Admiral Harlown sipping some tea. She motions for you to take a seat.

"Tea? And I can start answering questions if you would like."

"I would love some. Black if you have it.

Why us in particular? Was this school a random choice?

You mentioned 'your planet', how many world with sentient life on them are there? How is travel between them achieved? Is Faster than Light travel possible? Are there aliens? Are you a human looking alien or masquerading as one of us for diplomatic purposes?

Is magic a scientifically understood force? Does it break the second law of thermodynamics?"

She smiles, nodding her head as she orders some black tea for you. "Where to start. Well, technically I am a very human like alien. In fact, most people from my home planet of Mid-Childa could pass as human, outside of the wild hair colors." she says, trying to cover each of your questions.

"We live on a world that has, according to what information we have, is the seat of two previous interspatial empires, though we only have proof of one. Sadly, both seem to have imploded, which is a lesson we are trying to adhere to." she explains as the tea comes in, just the right temp with the proper additives available. Lindy shifts a bit as she fixes her sitting position.

"Yes, our magic is a very science and math based one, though there really are about four or five variations cuurently in popular use. The idea is that all planets have a manasphere, and all living things can produce it. All mages and other magicall beings have a metaphysical organ called a linker core which can gather, store, and with the help of the proper knowledge and device, use mana. It is a lot like any other physical activity though. Using too much too fast will tire you out and may injure your body, usually through light burns and muscle damage, like a normal athlete would have from training too hard."

She smiles again. "Mind you, there are some things I cannot tell you yet."

>More questions?
>>
>>29770449
"What exactly are these four or five variations?

How common are mages on Earth? Can magic be used effectively without some sort of device?

Has anyone made a dyson sphere yet?"
>>
>>29770449
"What do you want from us? You wouldn't go through all the trouble of testing us and answering our questions if you didn't want something."
>>
>>29770505
She giggled slightly. "Such an inquisitive one. Well, in order of your questions.... There is Mid-style, the one mosted used on my home planet; Ancient Belken style, which is very rarely used as a very, very small number of mages know it; Modern Belkan, which is based on the Kaiser Church's records of the previous style; Mid-Belkan, which is a combination of the two; and Summoning, which is almost as rare as Ancient Belkan for different reasons."

Lindy took a sip, watching you for a second before continuing. "It can be used without a device, though that usually requires memorization of complex formuli, and many mages end up tying those formuli to incantations for easy recall. The device helps with many levels of magic use, so many citizens have at least a minor one, similar to a cell phone."

"And no, no dyson spheres yet. However, if you don't mind, I did have a proposal for you, if there are no more pressing questions?"

>Well?
>>

You sit up as she finishes her cup of tea, regaining her 'official' mask. "I am officially here to find mages and offer them a job, essentially. What I am offering is basically a work-study opportunity which will count towards finishing high school, as well as college level courses. The other half of that is training in magic, pay, and living on another planet. It will be a four year trade off, and you will be expected to help out in an emergency, as well as possible patrols."

She closes her eyes. "I can give you until noon tomorrow to get your answer, but do know that if you join, barring certain circumstances and reasons, there will be no dropping out. Do you have an answer now, or do you need time?"

"I'll do it. I am still a tad skeptical, but what the hell." you tell her, nodding softly. "I am almost done with high school. This isn't the time to play it safe."

Lindy smiles, nodding at your resolve. Openning a briefcase, she spread out some papers. "I just need you to sign these. Your parents will be informed, and you will have time to pack what you want to take with you by noon tomorrow." She tells you, helping you out with the paperwork before letting you out. "See you tomorrow, Moriyama-san." she calls after you.

Deciding to be a good friend with all the turmoil going on, you wait by the exit for your group of buddies. One by one they come out, all but one looking hyped up, but then again, Toshiiro always looks neutral . . . except on pie day. Shivering with those repressed, bloody memories, you wave them all down.

"So, given your faces, I take it you all joined up too?" you ask with a grin. Kyou gave a vigorous thumbs up, as Kylie and Toshiiro nodded.

"We're a package deal, Kato-kun. I knew an egghead like you couldn't possibly pass this up." Kylie said, giggling at your face as she teases you.

Kyou is more energetic. "I could tell with my senses of youth you would go, Takato-sempai! This whole thing smells of adventure, and no proper, youthfull person should pass this up!" he declared, earning a soft sigh from your group.

"Needed a change. Could be worse, likely going to be worthwhile." your large, quieter friend says. You nod, understanding what he left unsaid after years of experience.

You grin largely. "Then lets get ready to earn our spots. We are gonna show these Bureau guys what Earth humans can do!"

Maybe Q&A? Otherwise, ideas like last time.

Any device ideas?

Bow, obviously. The question is more of it's aesthetics, and those of our barrier jacket.
>>
>>29771520
I would suggest this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWmWlxDiD0o.

Sniper Knight theme is the best theme.
>>
>>29771535
Sniper has the advantage of not needing a lot of power and playing into our strengths. Depending on how generous OP is it will also mean we won't have to do excessively complex magic due to not getting an AI-enabled (Intelligent Device in-series) Device to do all the thinking for us.

There are Intelligent Devices (top-tier magitech that is sentient, allows one to create spell permutations on the fly, provides enemy information and is pretty much your battle partner) and Storage Devices which are more like semi-intelligent weapons with a limited number of hardcoded spells.
ID are rather rare and only people that found them or have connections to wealthy people get them.
Of course, we could just say FUCK IT and go ritual spellcasting and hope our nerd brain can handle raw magic well.
It would certainly be different because there is a single protagonist who does this in the entire continuity, and she got retired to doing a desk job.
http://nanoha.wikia.com/wiki/Device#Classification
>>
>>29773014
But remember that Storage Devices allow you to have faster processing for spells and they are also easier to maintain.

Also I am the FORCE quest anon, I am currently prewritting for starting the thread. I hope to start in a few hours.
>>
>>29773059
>But remember that Storage Devices allow you to have faster processing for spells and they are also easier to maintain.
Yep. You and your partner device aren't spending any time painfully deliberating about how to cast the spell or what to do with it. It's pure fire-and-forget. SD is a gun. ID is more like a rocket control system.
>they are also easier to maintain.
ID need constant tuning, and if you are not good at wielding it you might actually have to use incantations and never fully take advantage of its functions. See: Yuuno.
So yea. there's more than one reason to go with something a little bit more spartan.
>Also I am the FORCE quest anon, I am currently prewriting for starting the thread. I hope to start in a few hours.
Waiting warmly.
>>
>>29773101
If we are going for the mid-Belkan style, we should try to aim for an Armed Device, these tend to be sturdy weapons and their AIs appear to be more rudimentary than IDs.

Though, having a good storage device is good to use many spells in quick succession, like Chrono does.
>>
>>29773139
>use many spells in quick succession
PEW PEW PEW MOTHERFUCKERS. Would learning Execution Shift be too cheesy?
> Armed Device
Aah right. Seems like a good idea. Maybe ask if it can be made to be a hunting knife in standby or something similarly useful (data glasses?).
inb4 we can't fly because FUCK YOU...
That ability was never explained, was it? It's just... some can, some can't.
>>
>>29773252
I kinda like to link the flying to magical capasity, ie, how much mana you can waste flying. Some people do not have that much.

Also I always planned to Pew Pew everyone away from range. If we can get Nanoha as a teacher we would be set for our style.
>>
>>29773304
>If we can get Nanoha as a teacher we would be set for our style.
It'll be Fate and then we'll get laughed at for being so slow and then Mana will fall out of our pockets and everyone will laugh and AAAAaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASDFG.
Ahem.
Maybe Vice will teach us. He hasn't yet done the shit he did in StrikerS (pretty sure it's at most one year pre-SS it happens) so perhaps he'd be willing to help IF he even does training.
>I kinda like to link the flying to magical capacity, ie, how much mana you can waste flying. Some people do not have that much.
That would explain why all the SS recruits are earth bound without assistance, yea. THEN AGAIN, why is Vivio unable to fly?
>>
>>29773368
No one said Vivio was that good of a mage capacity wise? I mean she can have average magic capacity, she is already special enough.
>>
>>29773387
She should have tons of Mana though, iunno.
/a/ says that she sucks more than she should partially because she uses Martial Arts, rather than casting, but I am not sure about that and it's out of the scope of this discussion.
Wait. Yes. We could learn (well, dabble in) Strike Arts in a Saint Church monastery for when fuckers be getting too close up in our grill.
>>
>>29773445
Wait, never mind. Strike Arts can be done by Toshiiro I suppose.
>>
>>29773445
I think Vivio is weak because she is not using the devices she should have been using, she is forcing herself to use a Modern Belkan style when she probably should try to imitate the Saint Kaiser and use a relic with some Kaisah Arts.

To be honest I expect Vivio to go G-Gundam at some point or another in this series.
>>
>>29773517
Yea, that's what I pretty much meant. She's using something entirely unsuited for her. Well, I guess her moms don't correct her because they want her to be happy, rather than powerful.
>To be honest I expect Vivio to go G-Gundam at some point or another in this series.
Heh, I'd be overjoyed should that happen.
>>
>>29773724
There was this guy who wrote a fic called Kaiser Mom, which had Olive, the SK, fight in a spar against Signum, which ended in the Kaisah entering her super mode and using her Shinning FIgah to win.

To be honest I like Ein more in ViviD, so far Vivio has been boring.
>>
>>29773445
If people want to get close to use, we could attack a bayonet to our riffle and then stab those who get near us.

To be honest our build would end up looking like a long range fragile speedy glass canon, so it would be better to play keep away if we can.
>>
>>29773790
> even in the Grimbright magitech future, people still attach bayonets
Reassuring, somehow.

>To be honest our build would end up looking like a long range fragile speedy glass canon,
Well, gotta convince one of our party to go punch magic and the other the oh-so-elusive (the only people who do it are basically geniuses to the point it's shoved down our throats and custom-made artificial beings) binding arts.

Much confidence there, but I've seen SB to be much better at this thing than other places, aye.
Thanks.
>Also bayonets totally work, specially when you have enemies that are not afraid to get in your face.
Gotta wonder what the rules are for stabbing people. Magic was specifically chosen over magic-assisted mass based weapons cause it's a less-lethal technique that still allows effective takedowns (something we don't have here currently excepting perhaps Tasers).
But yea, it'd be good, especially since the Belkans seemed to have had a speed fetish and wired that shit straight into their magic system, more or less.
>Also almost finishing with the prewrite, so I will start the thread after I eat something.
Waiting warmly.
>>
>>29774011
The bayonet would help dealing with Belkans, but to be honest, I doubt that Belkans themselves used them, as they did not have many ranged option.

If anyone used Bayonets in Ancient Belka it would have been an empire who needed to fight the Belkas. Maybe it was the guys who developed the Eclipse, seeing as all dividers have Bayonets attached.

Also I just have two more scenes to prewrite and a short note.
>>
>>29774063
>Maybe it was the guys who developed the Eclipse, seeing as all dividers have Bayonets attached.
Always sort of assumed it was one of Belka's many fuck-ups. Just, you know, one of the more potent and aggressive ones.
> dealing with Belkans
And fukken cyborgs once they become a thing.

That weren't CHANT FOR SIX MINUTES AND HOPE NOTHING HITS YOU at least. I like sniper knight but somehow being the weird dude in a hilariously JPRG-looking mage barrier jacket has its appeal...

>Also I just have two more scenes to prewrite and a short note.
Cool shit, yo. Hitting both Freedomland and The European Federation.
>>
>>29774136
Well Belka Long range casting was more like wide area rituals, like what Hayate does, so I can see why they concentrated on the whole speedy one hit kill style they had going.

Well Nanoha is never really clear about what happened in the Belkan eras, so it really could have been the Belkas that made the EC.

Also, thinking about it, now I am drawing Nier comparisons between Curren and Touma because of their books.
>>
>>29774202
>Well Nanoha is never really clear about what happened in the Belkan eras, so it really could have been the Belkas that made the EC.
We don't even know how evil they were for a transdimensional monarchy. But if they're still worshipped it they can't have been that ba-... wait. That logic doesn't hold if you look at modern political ideologies, altough the SK WERE supposedly peaceful.

>Well Belka Long range casting was more like wide area rituals, like what Hayate does
Indeed. I propose we pick it up for the sheer nerd flavour and style of it.
>so I can see why they concentrated on the whole speedy one hit kill style they had going.
Our friends can do that and defend us. What do you think?
> Nier
Forever backlogged but I think I'll have to play it soon.
>>
>>29774273
I can go for that sort of style, the thing is that I do not want to go so overboard with it and end like Hayate, a nuke that can't fight by itself.

To me the Belkans were like the Romans, a wide empire that fell because it grew too large and had to fight too many enemies and WMD like the Eclipse and the Marriage.
>>
>>29774319
>end like Hayate, a nuke that can't fight by itself.
Hayate's issue is that a lot of the shit that was crammed into her (yadda yadda lewd I know) was never meant to go into a human being which is why she's stuck with spells that a human isn't supposed to handle. I suspect that's also what knocks off her aim and generally leads to rather large amounts of suck when she tries to fight.
We'd probably learn somewhat more subdued spells suited for human brains and applications other than KILL EVERYTHING FOREVER.
>To me the Belkans were like the Romans, a wide empire that fell because it grew too large and had to fight too many enemies and WMD like the Eclipse and the Marriage.
Sounds plausible, really.
Wonder if mass-based weaponry would theoretically be allowed if on a low level. Like, could we use a PPQ? No, let's not, that would be kind of dickish but it's interesting to contemplate.
>>
>>29774459
Well we could try, going for a classical caster build would be wierd in the whole fast paced dogfights that Nanoha Has, but it could be interesting.

Also what is a ppq?
