You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force.

"Mom!" Red squeals as she tackle hugs the scientist. Fortunately, the scientist, apparently Red's mother, seems to have expected this and rather expertly bleeds of Red's excess momentum by spinning around as Red holds on to her.

"Rachel! What are you doing here?!" The scientist smiles as Rachel finally lets go. "I thought you would be in Germany."

"Well, we were, but then we got transferred here for some kind of testing."

"I see, so that's who they selected..." The scientist nods before realizing you're standing right there. "Ah! You must be Rachel's commanding officer!"

"That's right." You nod, saluting. "Captain William Pierce. And I assume you're Rachel's mother?"

"Yes, that would be me." The scientist chuckles and shakes your hand. "No need to be so formal with me, Captain. I'm not part of the army, I just work for it. My name's Christina, by the way. Christina Kelsey."

"A pleasure." You grin.

You suddenly hear a honking sound behind you. You turn to see the rest of your squadron and crew still at the jeeps wondering what's going on.

You wave at the jeeps to let them know they can go on ahead. The jeep carrying the witches drives off, but the one with your aircrew seems to linger, as if unsure whether you were going to join them or not.

"You know what, you should have a moment with your mother, Red. I'll just be going-"

"A-actually, I wouldn't mind if you stayed." Red says quickly. "I always did sorta want you to meet my parents..."

"You know, we haven't been back in the States for a while, and catching up on current events has been pretty tough out here." You say. "Anything major going on back home?"

"This and that." Christina shrugs. "Honestly, for better or worse, Nobody seems to consider the war a big deal. Well, I'm sure the people in Alaska would say otherwise, but the fact that most of the fighting has been contained in Europe and Asia means the American public isn't really feeling the true impact of the war."

"Huh." You nod. "What about the world overall?"

"I'm just a scientist, not an intelligence officer, so my knowledge is limited to what CNN airs." Christina shrugs. "Alaska is all but won by this point, China entered the war on Russia side, and I hear new fronts are opening up in the Middle East and Norway. But really, the only thing the major news networks are talking about is the Eagle of Tanana these days."

"Oh right, that Navy flier." You nod. You vaguely recalled Colonel Kelsey mentioning him. "How's he been doing?"

"You don't know?" Christina blinks and then shakes her head. "I'm sorry, I sometimes forget how hard it is to get the most recent news out here. He's something of a hero back home. People are actually comparing him to the great Martian War aces like Young, and who can blame them? Skilled at flying, beating impossible odds, surrounded by skilled and attractive witches..."

You see a wry grin form at the corner of Christina's mouth as she eyes you. Obviously she was drawing the parallels between the two of you.

"Must be nice." You say simply. Even if he was Navy, you had to respect what he was doing.

"You'd think so." Christina shrugs. "But the Russians absolutely hate him. I hear that he's the only NATO pilot with an official bounty on his head."

"So, hey, Mom." Red speaks up. "How long are you gonna be here? How's Dad been doing?"

"I'll be here for a few days, to oversee the transfer of some sensitive equipment." Christina smiles. "And your father has been busy like always. He's still trying definitively prove the existence of male magic users."

"I hope they aren't giving him a hard time about it." Red frowns.

"Oh, don't worry, as long as he keeps coming up with novel ideas, DARPA will keep him around." Christina laughs. "Even so, only a mind like his would come up with a halfway practical method of utilizing laser weaponry."

"Whoa, WHAT." You and Red both blink.

"Ooops, I think I said too much." Christina gasps. "Anyways, I'm sure the both of you will be thrilled what you'll be issued tomorrow. I actually need to be going now."

"W-wait!" Red says and turns to you. "Cap, permission to accompany my mother for the rest of the night?"

You shift your eyes to Christina, who simply smiles and shrugs.

"Well..."

"All right, let's go, Rachel. We can catch up on all the silly things your father's been up to."

"He didn't blow up the microwave again, did he?" Red sighs.

"He went through three this month. He's convinced it holds the secret to detecting magic in men."

Well, you decide that it's best to just return to the barracks. You're afraid that wandering around aimlessly is just going to get you shot or arrested by some twitchy French MP. It's a bit of walk, but the exercise and the cool evening air mitigate it somewhat. However, you're encouraged further when you smell something rather delicious wafting through the air. And then you remember that tonight was seafood night thanks to Tarin.

Finally, you reach the building, where you see your air crew sitting around the tables and you assume Janice and Tarin were in the kitchen.

"Oh, Captain, you're back!" Janice's head pokes out from the kitchen door to greet you. How did she even know you arrived? Those had to be pretty sharp instincts of hers.

"Huh. I guess that makes sense." You nod.

"Food's ready!" Janice says happily as she walks out of the kitchen, interrupted your conversation. "We'll be having lobster pasta today!"

"And some boiled crab." Tarin adds in.

The rest of the evening is spent wolfing down the fresh seafood dishes. You honestly wonder if there's anything that Janice COULDN'T cook. Once dinner is finished, the combination of a full day at the beach and a full stomach leaves everybody lethargic and drowsy. Dismissing your squadron, you stumble back to your room and drop down on your bed, noticing only too late that things seemed much lonelier with Red absent.

Morning comes all too soon as your alarm begins blaring again. Yawning, you pull yourself out of bed. Being a rear echelon base, Istres was not nearly as hopelessly crowded as Ramstein and the barracks you were posted in were essentially empty. You head to the bathroom, and are a bit unnerved at how silent everything is while you get yourself cleaned up. You hate to admit it, but you almost missed having to dodge Bree and her witches during morning hours.

Almost.

You check your watch and realize that you need to report in to Hangar 2 in thirty minutes.

You decide to stop in the dining area for a quick bite. No sense starting the day on an empty stomach.

"Hey Cap." Red waves as she munches on a biscuit.

"Red? What the heck are you doing here?" You blink. "I thought you'd be with your mom."

"Yeah, well, she had to leave her room early so I just made my way back here." Red shrugs and finishes off her biscuit. "Better eat fast. We're supposed to be going soon, right? Janice and Tarin are about to leave as well."

"What about the air crew?" You blink.

"They were so eager to see what they were getting , they left really early. Like, an hour ago or so."

"Boys and their toys..." You grin as you shake your head.

In the end, you were forced to grab a bagel and mug of coffee before rushing out of the barracks. You're quickly joined by Red, Janice, and Tarin.

You just concentrate on finishing your breakfast while Red, Janice, and Tarin get into some small talk, mostly about how pretty Red's mother was and they both resembled each other, and how they were so happy that Red was able to see a member of her family for the first time in quite a while.

Finally, you reach the hangar, where you see two vaguely helicopter shaped objects covered with tarps, with one larger than the other. There were also a number of technicians and ground crew scattered about, and you noticed they were all USAF personnel, rather than the local French base staff. You also see Christina present, in a conversation with your air crew.

"Ah, you're all here. We can get this started now." Christina claps, grabbing the technicians' attention.

"I should've suspected you were involved in this." You sigh as you walk up to Christina.

"Of course. It's not rocket science." Christina grins. "Please, take a seat and we'll begin."

You dutifully follow her instructions and sit down in one of the folding chairs set up in the hangar. Christina checks briefly to see if everybody is ready before clearing her throat.

"Greetings, everybody. For those of you who don't know, I am Dr. Christina Kelsey from DARPA. I'm here today to reveal the next generation of helicopter combat."

Christina then nods to the techs, who begin pulling off the tarp covering one of the helicopters. What you see was a Black Hawk... except it wasn't. It was certainly the same size and vague shape as one, but you notice it was wildly different, as well. It was smooth yet angular at the same time. It was also all black, and had a rather ominous air about it.

"This here is the latest variant of the Black Hawk, XH-60 Ghost Hawk." Christina continues. "For past few years, it has been a proven fact that Russian anti aircraft technology has advanced in leaps and bounds in an effort to counter NATO air power. Not only are they making more powerful and longer ranged missiles, but also more advanced radars that can detect aircraft farther and more reliably than ever before."

Christina then walks up to the Ghost Hawk.

"The Ghost Hawk was designed to be the US Armed Force's first operational stealth helicopter. We've taken lessons and technology from other classified programs to achieve this. I won't get into details, but basically the Ghost Hawk's design is meant to deflect and absorb any and all radar waves directed against it. In addition, we've implemented numerous sound and heat reduction technologies into this craft to make it more difficult to detect across all spectrums. Simply put, this craft is designed for deep penetration behind enemy lies."

You can already see the aircrew's eyes widening at this reveal. They were like kids getting a Christmas present.

"Now that we have a complete prototype, you have been selected to test its performance. We've tried to keep its controls and performance limits as close to the original Black Hawk as possible for ease of transition, but we're still not entirely sure how all of the onboard systems will behave in a combat situation. That's where you all come in." Christina says. "You will be putting this helicopter through its paces, pushing its limits, and by the end, prove that it is a combat capable craft. Are there any questions?"

"Did you have to make any significant design compromises on this craft?" You ask. It was basically the boilerplate question for every new aircraft ever.

"Unfortunately yes." Christina nods. "Because we're using a composite material to maximize radar wave absorption, the Ghost Hawk suffers from a slightly increased vulnerability to small arms and shrapnel. Nothing too serious, but significant enough to be noted. Also, in order to minimize its radar cross section, all of the craft's external parts either had to be streamlined or stored internally, such as the landing gear and refueling boom. Part of your testing will be to determine the reliability of the mechanisms used to deploy and retract your internally stored parts. The Ghost Hawk also has an issue where it performs poorly in extremely hot environments, which we're still trying to fix, so don't expect to see it deployed in the Middle East any time soon."

can't really do that without changing the powerpack and crippling the -60 overall, what you can do is redirect the exhaust and heat, and configure the rotor blades to direct their wash elsewhere where it will minimise risk of being detected, this is what the -60 nighthawks do, they are still loud as fuck, but only behind and above them, if you are infront and below one, you can't hear anything
>>
>>29767135

That's not actually that big a deal with a good helo pilot, to be honest. You can set a helicopter down so gently the people inside don't even notice the contact. Autorotations might be rougher, but the stealth should mitigate the need for that.

"Don't get me wrong, it seems like a great bird and all." You frown. "But I don't like the idea of a deep insertion bird being MORE vulnerable to gunfire than it already is."

"You're thinking about this the wrong way." Christina sighs. "The main point is Ghost Hawk is to never be detected in the first place, which me, my colleagues, and the DoD have determined is a more effective defense than any kind of physical armor. Plus, modern Russian AA weapons technology is powerful enough that the armor difference between a Ghost Hawk and standard Black Hawk is almost zero. Again, and I cannot stress this enough, the main strength of the Ghost Hawk is its stealth capabilities. Ideally, the enemy would never know you were there in the first place."

"And what about this problem with extreme heat?" You ask.

"Well, there seems to be an issue where the engine can't quite seem to generate enough lift if the air is too hot. We're still determining the exact cause of the issue, but we don't believe you'll be experiencing those kid of temperatures in Europe."

to expand on the hot air problem, the proto -60 the Seals lost in pakistan was not flying in hot weather, it was relatively cool air, it encountered a vortex of hot air from a cloud system that was relatively low altitude, and the -60's own low altitude meant it could not recover controlled flight, the best the pilots could do was to crash inside the compound

All of that on a cold night...
>>
>>29767569

"All right, I'll take your word for it. But I still have reservations."

"Be assured, Captain, the entire point of these tests is to find issues and fix them before they become a problem." Christina says confidently. "Me and my team are on hand to make the necessary repairs and adjustments."

"Okay," you nod and point to the other helicopter, "what's under tarp B, then?"

"Well, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to show you." Christina nods at the techs again and the pull the tarp off. Again, it was a sleek yet anglar black helicopter like the Ghost Hawk, except this time it looked completely alien."

"Unlike the Ghost Hawk, the RAH-66 Comanche is an entirely new aircraft designed from the ground up." Christina says, patting the helicopter on its side. "This is actually a personal pet project of mine, and I'm rather proud of how it turned out."

"So, besides, the stealth, what makes it so special?" Bullseye asks.

"Well, unlike the Ghost Hawk, the Comanche was designed as a scout and attack helicopter, so it has many systems the Ghost Hawk doesn't." Christina beams. "It has a 20mm chin gun and an internal bay that can store up to six hellfire or sidewinder missiles. It also has the option to add on detachable stub wings which add another two weapon hardpoints, though obviously losing some stealth capability in the process. With these weapons the Comanche can sneak up close to Russian AA emplacements and eliminate them with minimal risk to itself."

"Wow, that sounds pretty useful." Snips whistles.

"However, the Comanche's main strength is its recon capabilities. It's designed to fly close or even behind enemy lines and designate targets for more heavily armed assets, such as Apaches, artillery, and CAS craft, allowing them to strike targets from beyond their normal effective range. However, for this particular craft, I decided to add a little of my own flavor to it..."

Christina then pops open the cockpit. Inside, it looked like the standard pilot/gunner setup in the Apache and Cobra, except sitting in the gunner seat was a very familiar piece of equipment.

A magic interface.

"You see, the Army and the Navy have already had magical interface technology for quite some time." Christina explains. "The Navy has begun implementing them in their latest Wyvern fighter craft, and are even contemplating retrofitting existing Tomcats. The Army meanwhile is developing an entire family of armored vehicles capable of using this system. On the Comanche, the onboard witch can give it additional protection in the form of shields, vastly improved stealth capability, or even increase its speed or offensive capability. Just the addition of this system increases the Comanche's combat strength exponentially."

you would have plenty of room if you used a standard UH-60, but with the ghost hawk, theres barely room inside for all the medical gear and setup PJs use let along extra passengers

A UH-60 kitted out for PJs can carry 5 Cat A wounded, and up to 7 Cat B/C wounded along with its complement of door gunner + 3 PJs
>>
>>29767855
Didn't mean to copy the last option. The answer was kind of obvious.
>>
>>29767897
This is assuming they're for PJ use as opposed to infratration/spec ops use.
>>
>>29767939
>PJ use as opposed to infratration/spec ops use
SF use depends per mission, so you see a lot of modification to the airframe and its cabin before hand, which is why aircrews spend a lot of prep time actually flying and testing the mods, to make sure that if they are carrying 12 guys who are overloaded with kit, that they have the lift thrust required to perform certain maneuvers or to give them the performance numbers they need to navigate and fly.

Some OPs you have almost no gear at all in them, others you're kitted out more heavily than PJs (who bring a metric fucktonne of shit with them).

You can't assume its designed for SF use, until the SF guys kit it out for an OP, and engineers and designers always forget that, and try to make the best allrounder, or mission specific airframe, and fuck it up because they didn't leave us room to use the airframe how we want.

"It's a fine piece of work." You nod, a bit impressed. Seeing what a magical interface did with the T-80 in the previous mission, you were utterly terrified what a state of the art attack helicopter would be capable of with it. In a good way, of course. "So who's the lucky bastard who gets to pilot it?"

"That would be ME." You hear a very confident voice declare. You spin around to see a young man wearing a pilot suit and big grin on his face before he salutes. "Lieutenant Dominque Adams, reporting for duty!"

"Hey, wait a minute!" Red rushes forward and narrows her eyes as she glares at Adams. "Have we met before?"

"Now that you mention it..." Adams frowns as well until he sees Janice walking up. "Oh jeez! It's you guys! Holy shit!"

"Alright..." Red sighs. "I'll see you later, Ugly."

"You bet." Ugly nods back.

"Alright, Hoskins, let's get this show on the road!" You yell.

As Hoskins and the rest of the aircrew swarm over the Ghost Hawk to make sure its ready to fly, Christina approaches you and hands you a folder.

"Just your tasks for today. It's all simple tasks, really. Just fly from point A to point B. You are free to perform any maneuvers you wish, as long as you don't wreck the helicopter. It is very, VERY expensive, so please show due care."

"Got it." You say as you look at the folder and inwardly shake your head at the contradiction of pushing a bird to its limits while not wrecking it at the same time.

Within half an hour, the Ghost Hawk is ready to fly and it slowly lifts off into the air. The Ghost Hawk slowly makes its way over to the test range.

I don't like its vulnerability at all. Our favourite Russian witch already has proven to be able to detect anything, she'll fuck up our shit hard when we first meet her in the Ghosthawk.

What are the chances of us doing a Fronk and wrecking it on our first flight?

Yes, because a regular Black Hawk would totally stand up to anything she could dish out, right?

Of course not. But I doubt stealth is an advantage against her, so I'd rather have a magic interface. Shields do help.

But no one has installed a magic interface into a regular Blackhawk, so it's a moot point.

"Let's just take this slow and steady." You say. "I don't want to crash this thing on the first day."

"Got it." Bullseye nods as he gradually speeds the craft up to cruising speed. Every so often he would bank and turn the craft under various speeds and conditions, but nothing too major.

"So how does it feel?" You ask.

"Not too much different from our old Pave Hawk, amazingly enough." Bullseye says. "The eggheads actually knew what they were doing this time. But, the bird does feel a lot lighter than normal. Not sure if it's because of the materials or something with the engine, though."

"Wait, I got something on radar." Snips announces. "French IFF."

You poke your head out the Ghost Hawk's side door and can see a small silhouette approaching rapidly. From the size and shape, you judge that it's a witch. You then realize that it's Nungesser.

"Bonjour!" Nungesser waves cheerfully as she pulls up next to you.

"Nungesser, are you supposed to be out here?"

"Well, I AM assigned to be your chase witch and, in the future, one of the OPFOR units." Nungesser grins.

"That didn't answer my question." You frown.

"What does it matter?" Nungesser shrugs and laughs. "Besides, I wanted to see how my darling little Bullseye was doing!"

"Doing fine heeeere." Bullseye mumbles nervously.

You continue this for another couple of hours or so, doing simple tasks such as banking and orbiting a single area for a period of time. Nungesser flies alongside, commenting on the craft's performance from her point of view. Eventually, the Comanche also joins in and starts doing its own maneuvers in its own airspace.

"We're running low on fuel." Bullseye warns. "Want to start heading back?"

"Yeah, we're done for now." You nod. "Let's head back."

The Ghost Hawk returns to the hangar and slowly touches down just outside and all of you hop out as the craft is swarmed by techs and scientists eager to pull the flight data from it.

"So, what should we do now?" Red asks.

>>
>>29769153
>We should go tell Christina how the flight went.

and then, FOOD.
>>
>>29769153
You decide to go tell Christina how the flight went. Overall, the craft seemed sturdy and reliable enough, at least in normal flight conditions.

"Hm, yes, but we'll really need to start pushing it as we go on." Christina nods as she scribbles down some notes.

"Also, I noticed that the Ghost Hawk feels a lot lighter than our old Pave Hawk." Bullseye speaks up. "I'm not sure if it's because it really is lighter, or here's something else going on."

"Hmmm, it might because the composite materials we're using are actually making the craft lighter." Christina puts a hand to her chin. "Now, we can do one of two things. Being lighter, the Ghost Hawk will theoretically have a higher top speed, less fuel consumption and higher weight tolerance. On the other hand, we can actually add in some armor plating to some of the Ghost Hawk's more critical areas, which would bring the weight back to a regular Black Hawk."

"I think we can keep it as it is for now." You say. "Actually, I do have a question."

"Go ahead. That's what we're here for." Christina says.

"Why doesn't the Ghost Hawk have a magic interface?"

"Ah, I figured you'd be asking that." Christina sighs. "The short story is, since the Ghost Hawk is meant to be a utility and support craft rather than an offensive asset, the DoD has decided not to make the Black Hawk platform a priority for conversion. Plus, the Black Hawk's layout makes it difficult to place an interface, at least not without having to sacrifice carrying capacity, which negates the point of using a transport craft in the first place. But, simply put, the heads of the various armed forces are more interested in converting fighters, attack helicopters, and tanks rather than transports."

Is it something we can at least consider as an option? I understand why we don't have it as a standard, but we may have need of that capability in the future.
>>
>>29769619
they serve us better in their strikers as fire support for extraction, taking them away and putting them in the helo just gives the enemy one big target to focus on that can't return fire as much, or adapt to the situation

its a bad idea
>>
>>29769646
>they serve us better in their strikers as fire support for extraction
That's true for Janice and Tarin, but what about Red, who doesn't fly Strikers and is in the helo with us?
>>
>>29769673
She's needs to be able to get in out fast. Having her interface with the helo everytime is going to slow that process down. She's also the ground heal witch. She's needs to keep that magic level up to you know do her job.
>>
>>29769552
"I guess that makes some sort of sense." You concede. "But I'd at least like to have the option."

"I'll see what I can do, bu I can't make any promises." Christina sighs. "As I said before, the DoD isn't terribly interested in converting transports. Witches are meant to be force multipliers, not glorified countermeasure systems."

"Well, thanks anyways." You get up from your chair. "That's all we have for today."

"Thank you, Captain." Christina nods.

As you and your aircrew exit the hangar, you see Nungesser, now out of her strikers and waving at you, or more specifically, Bullseye.

"Um, I... uh... gotta go, guys." Bullseye says awkwardly before jogging off i her direction.

"Awww, look that that. Our brave pilot is growing up." Snips coos.

"Brings a tear to my eye." Hoskins nods.

In the distance, you can see Nungesser greet Bullseye with a hearty slap to the back before grabbing his hand and leading him off like a giddy schoolgirl.

"Huh, wonder where they're going..." Red frowns.

"How sweet." Janice giggles.

Tarin just cocks her head curiously.

However, your train of thought is interrupted when you see the Comanche land on the tarmac. Ugly then clambers out of the cockpit, brushing some sweat off his brow before helping the girl in the gunner seat, presumably his sister, out of the cockpit.

>You're starving. Let's go get some food already!

"Hey, Ugly!" You wave at the Comanche pilot. "We were just about to head out for lunch! Want to tag along?"

Ugly glances at you, then his sister, than at the hangar as if deciding what to do before shrugging.

"Sure, why not?"

"B-but Dom, what about-"

"Don't sweat it, Liz, it's no big deal." Ugly assures his sister. "Guys, meet my sister, Elizabeth Adams, though you can just call her Liz for short."

"H-HELLO!" Liz says a bit too loudly as she bows her head forward.

"Yeah, she's not too good with people. Guess that's why she's such a good stealth witch." Ugly chuckles.

"Well, come on, you two don't deserve the crap they'll undoubtedly try to serve you out of the commissary." You grin. "Janice, what are we having today?"

"Hm, maybe just some simple turkeys sandwiches today." Janice grins.

"So, Liz, was it?" You grin in a friendly way. "What have you been up to before getting transferred here?"

"O-oh well..." Liz mumbles, looking away. "I um, used to be um, a tank witch. Bradley scout. B-but I n-never really got into it."

"Why's that?"

"W-well in the Academy, I h-had a better um, affinity for flight based strikers, b-but I wanted to be in the Army like my brother, s-so..."

"Ah, I see." You nod. "Well, lucky you managed to get paired with him in a helo, huh?"

"Y-yeah!" Liz finally nods and smiles rapidly.

"Anyways, from what it sounds like, our two birds are going to be paired together for the foreseeable future, so lets make sure to be good partners, all right?" You grin.

"O-O-OKAY!" Liz blubbers.

Yeah, this was going take some work. Nice kid though.

By that point, all of you had reached the barracks, where Janice proceeds to make the turkey sandwiches she promised, with the other witches helping her. And of course, the sandwiches she makes turn out to be freaking amazing.

Throughout lunch, Ugly and Red both recount the mission that they had participated in together. While you were glad everyone got out of that one fine, you had to give Ugly some credit for engaging Russian infantry on the ground from his Apache with his goddamn sidearm.

"And then my gunner was like, 'YOU TRYING TO BE A HERO, UGLY?', and I was like, 'I JUST WANT TO KILL SOME RUSSIANS!'"

"Well, you've certainly got balls, I can tell you that." You chuckle.

After lunch, both Ugly and Liz thank you and leave, having to go relay their flight info to Christina like you did.

"Oh yes, Captain, don't forget that we have to go out again later tonight for night testing." Janice says as she cleans up the plate. "Just a reminder."

You sigh. And this was supposed to be a laid back assignment, too.
