You rub your head, trying to make the sharp pain between your eyes go away. Today is a repeat of yesterday, tomorrow will be a repeat of today. No matter what you do, your peaceful, quiet life keeps slipping through your fingers. You're in the hospital again, just as you have been for the past week. Though you insisted you were fine, the Chief ordered you to take a week of rest after your fight with Yeager.

"You have been using your power too much," she said, utterly disregarding your pleas, "You must have died ten times yesterday. Even for a Chimera, you cannot push your body so often without consequences."

You'd like nothing more than to just go home, to leave all this behind you, but here you are, stuck eating stale hospital food, watching stale hospital television, and wasting away under the stale, flickering lights of the hospital. The gown they have you wearing is itchy, and you're not sure you're happy with the baby pink color you've been stuck with. Fortunately, today you're being released, so perhaps you can start putting your life back together.

You look out the window and gaze at the city's skyline. It should be familiar, but everything has left you uncertain of the world you live in. Just how many more Overed are there? Is everyone just a monster in waiting?

A knock at the door brings you back to reality. Is it the nurse again? You can't stand taking any more of those damn vitamin supplements...

You turn over in your bed, pulling the sheet up as far as you can. They can't bother you if you're asleep, after all. You shut your eyes and try to slow your breath. Every now and again, you attempt to fake a snore.

Despite your efforts to convince them that you need your rest, the door opens anyway and you hear someone shuffle inside. The smell is all too familiar: Ayase.

"...I know you're sleeping, Captain, but I just wanted to come in and say my goodbyes."

You're a little confused, but you try not to move and alert her. After a few minutes, she speaks up again.

"Um, this is a little weird, okay? I'm so glad you're asleep right now, or I'd never be able to say this. So...you know how I got sick? Well, um, when I got better, I found out that I had--don't laugh--superpowers."

You feel your breath catch in your throat. You pass it off as a reflex and try to shift around to make it look natural.

"Some people in suits came to talk to me. They said that my powers are a side effect of Harry's medicine, and that I can't stay here anymore. They're going to take Harry and me to California, but I don't know for what. I'm not supposed to tell anyone, but I just couldn't keep it to myself."

She sighs, and you hear her begin to scribble something down on paper.

"I'll be leaving to get on a plane in an hour. I don't know how they convinced my parents to let me go, but they say they have permission. I wanted to say goodbye to everyone, but I guess this will have to do."

You hear her set the paper down on your dresser and begin to walk toward the door. If you're going to say anything, now's the time.

You roll over, unsure what you should say or do. You understand what Ayase's going through, even if you don't like her very much. After struggling with it for a few seconds, you decide on just being as plain as possible.

Goodbye, Ayase.

She turns to you, a little shocked. After a moment, she shakes her head and gives you a mock salute. A goofy grin creeps over her face.

"Goodbye, Captain!"

And with that, Ayase leaves. You look at the paper left on your dresser. It's a phone number and a note.

'This is my secret line! Feel free to call or text me whenever!'

It looks like she doesn't plan to take this whole secret business too seriously. You stifle a small laugh and put your things away. You'll be released from the hospital yourself in a few hours. The Chief said she had a big announcement for you when you get out, but you should probably go see about collecting the work you missed at school first. There should still be someone in the teacher's office by the time you get out. Of course, you could always just go home, but who knows what is waiting for you there....

You decide you should pick up your homework first. If you flunk, your only job prospects are with the UGN, and you're rather unhappy with that state of affairs. After filling out the paperwork needed for your release, you catch a rail over to the high school. It's early evening, so it's mostly deserted, but you make your way over to the faculty office. You'll just have to find Professor Earl, your homeroom teacher, and collect your things.

The faculty office is rather barren. Most of the teachers must have split already. It's not the first time you've missed class, so you already know how to navigate the maze of desks and cubicles that litter the faculty office floor. Eventually, you reach Professor Earl's desk, but a few things are off.

First of all, Professor Earl isn't here, and he practically lives in the school. Secondly, there is a strange woman sitting in his chair. Third, his name-plate has been taken down and replaced with one that reads: 'Selene Argenta'. You begin to back off, but a familiar voice roots you in place.

"Hey there, boy. Surprised to see me?"

The woman turns around. While her brown hair and blue eyes are different, the face and style of speech make you unable to mistake who this is. This is Lunatic High. Just what is she doing here?

"Well, even I need a job, boy. Just so happens there were a couple openings at this school and I decided to apply. What are the odds?"

You're pretty sure this has nothing to do with odds.

"Maybe. It's not my place to say. Void also took a job as the nurse, just so you know. It'll be great sharing my day job with my drinking buddy. Say, you want to ask her to fill this up before you go?"

She holds out an empty bottle for you. By fill it up, does she mean...?

You grab your work and dash out of the office, paying no heed to Lunatic's shouting as you leave the school far behind. Screw whatever the Chief wants, you're going to make a mad dash for your room and the sweet, sweet solitude of your room.

Not stopping for the train or the bus, you run the entire way home, taking whatever shortcut that you can be bothered to remember in your haste. Throwing open the door, you leap up the stairs to your room and slam the door behind you. After locking the door and pulling the curtains on your windows, you lie down on your bed, completely exhausted and mentally spent. After a few minutes, you begin to look over your work, attempting to figure out just what you've missed while you're out.

You are cut short by the feeling of breath on your neck. You jump out of bed and take a long, hard look at your resting place. Without a doubt, there's nothing there, but you can still hear the faint sound of breathing, and you can smell the traces of sweat in the air. Certain there is something there, you lean in closer to try to figure out what is going on.

"..Ah, I've been discovered."

Without bothering to check, you reach forward and grab the source of the voice. As soon as your fingers feel the cotton of a blazer, Claire's form suddenly becomes visible. You open your door, intent on throwing her down the stairs.

"So rough. Please, don't hold yourself back for my sake."

Realizing that this is exactly what Claire wants, you set her down outside your door. You hear a small sigh of disappointment escape her lips as you go back to your room.

"You never showed up for the Chief's announcement, Captain. Shall I tell her you'll be late, or will you reschedule?"

You really don't want to see her at all.

You do your best to ignore Claire and return to your room. You throw your homework on your desk and begin to work. Now where were you? Math, right? You put your head down and begin to work. And work. And work. About an hour in, you only have about five problems out of fifty done. Numbers have never been your strong suit, it takes far too much effort to memorize all those formulas, so you have to reteach yourself the formulas every time you sit down to do mathematics.

You get up and try to stretch, trying to get your mind off the work. After a few minutes of getting your blood moving again you turn back to your work. You see your pen, moving of its own accord, scribbling down the answers to your problems in rapid fire. A month ago, you would have guessed it was a ghost, but now...now you know what to do. You gather up a spare sheet of paper, roll it into a ball, aim it carefully, then toss.

"Ah!"

Your paper ball bounces off of Claire's head, which returns to your field of vision. Without a hint of shame, Claire stands up and places your pen down.

"You were taking too long. I understand you are a man of action, and such trivial things like calculus are beneath you, so I took it upon myself to handle this assignment for you. Did I do something wrong? You seemed to be in great pain. Perhaps...are you the type who likes to suffer? I could punish you if you want."

You hear a knock at your front door...then a doorbell...then someone shouting. You do not want to deal with this...

You decide to answer the door. You ignore Claire's shenanigans as you walk down the staircase, shrugging her off as she throws herself at you, making various innuendos and clingy gestures. The shouting grows ever louder as you approach the door, and you hesitate to open it when you finally get down. However, given that you can't very well leave someone screaming outside your door, you decide to open it up.

"--this instant! I won't stand for being ignored like this! And what's more I--!"

It's the Chief. She is completely red in the face, holding what you think is the last volume of Heat Beat: Darkness you had in your collection. After finishing her rant, she stops cold, catching her breath and holding the book up to cover her face.

"You never arrived, even when I summoned you," She says, glaring at you over the top of the comic,"Well, never mind. I'm coming in."

She shoves you aside and goes to sit on your couch, smoothing out the wrinkles in her skirt as she takes her seat.

"Well, then, shall we get the boring parts out of the way first?" She doesn't wait for you to answer, "Due to Diablos still being at large, I have taken control of the public school and am now using it to monitor the youth of this Island more closely. I'm sure you've already seen Lunatic High and Shining Void at their new positions, among several others. Chairman Yugo will be taking over as your principal. Now, to the important matter..."

She thrusts the comic book at you.

"Where is the rest?! You have left me on a terrible cliffhanger! I thought I told you to bring me the entirety of this series and yet the story remains unfinished!"

It's true, you do have a couple more volumes you've held onto for...personal reasons. Is it really wise to give those up?

I'm thinking the general consensus of the vote was to
>tease her

Your first impulse is to ask for your own comic books back. After all, Darkness was a good source of material for you and your pleasant escapes from reality, just as it is with many other young boys. Why should you have to give it up to some girl, no matter what her title is?

After a moment, you decide to give her a taste of her own medicine. You tell her that she's being awfully forward, asking you for such a lewd book.

"L-lewd? It is most certainly not lewd! The love between Princess Lulu and the young boy Lido is beautiful and pure!"

Pure? How can it be pure? Every chapter, he practically molests her 'on accident', and she clearly enjoys the physical attention.

"That's just because she's--"

And it's not just her, every character in the comic seems to enjoy some bizarre mix of humiliation play and pseudo-consensual grabbing. The Chief turns red and takes a harsh tone.

"Now you listen to me! I-I won't have you slander these wonderful maidens--"

From the girl next door, to the Princess's cousins, all the way down to the main character's own sister: they all seem to get off on the idea of being thrown down and violated for all to see. Is that what the Chief likes? Does she fantasize about such things? Is she no better than Claire?

"...Y-you're wrong..."
>>
>>29669182
The Chief is redder than a tomato, and you can feel the heat coming off her skin from ten paces away. Her face is twisted into some bizarre mix of a frown and a smile, and her hands are shaking at her side.

"I've...I've never been so insulted!" The Chief gets up, leaving the book behind, and stomps toward your door. She turns back and points at you, "How dare you speak to your Chief and your student body president like this! I won't forget this, Wild Card! I won't! Starting tomorrow, I'm going to make you very sorry for how you have slighted me today!"

She slams the door behind her and leaves. You get the feeling that you're going to be seeing a lot more of the Chief from now on...

"The Chief has always been such a dishonest woman," You turn to see Claire sitting on your couch, reading the comic that was left behind.

"I would not dare to lie about such a thing. Of course I wish to be cast down and violated by--"

Get out, Claire.

Fluff on where you live. Please bear with me, as I am copying this from a spiral directly into the postbox

New Zanzibar Island

New Zanzibar Island is an island in the pacific ocean, resting about halfway between Hawaii and Japan. With an area totalling roughly 40,000 square miles (about 102,000 square kilometers), New Zanzibar Island is one of the largest islands in the world. Despite its size, it was uninhabited and relatively unnoticed until the 1920s, when it was discovered during a flight over the pacific ocean. After its discovery, it was used as a vacation spot by many countries, America and Japan in particular. Today, New Zanzibar Island boasts a population of 400,000 permanent residents, and is formally considered an American territory.

New Zanzibar Island has a subtropical climate, and is generally warm and pleasant throughout the year, experiencing very little snow or ice conditions. Combined with its fertile soil, this makes New Zanzibar well suited for farming, and most of its area is devoted to large scale farms; the export of New Zanzibar grown fruits account for a large percentage of New Zanzibar Island's economy. Before farming became widespread, dense yew forests covered most of the area. Much of this was cleared away and now what forest remains is under strict preservation practices. Mount William-James is the only mountain on the Island, nestled in a forest at New Zanzibar's center. Despite the originally thick flora, New Zanizbar Island was unusually devoid of fauna. While small rodents, insects, and birds were commonly found, there was very little above the size of a rabbit to be found on the island. The most common grazing animal on New Zanzibar, the goat, was only introduced with American immigrants.

he island was completely uninhabited when it was discovered, and so the entirety of its population is descended from American and Japanese settlers. During the Pacific War, the island's ethnic Japanese were contained in a concentration camp at the base of Mount William-James. Even after the war ended and the Japanese were allowed to return to their normal lives, many continued to live in the valley and surrounding fields, creating small pockets of pure ethnic Japanese that continue to exist to this day. While there is evidence of a native culture existing on New Zanzibar Island, only their artifacts and faint traces of architecture remain. Most scholars agree that the people who lived on the Island were likely relatives of the Hawaiian or perhaps the Ainu peoples.

New Zanzibar is the largest city of New Zanzibar Island. It is a sprawling metropolis that covers nearly one-third of the Island while containing three-fourths of the Island's total population. New Zanzibar is a coastal city, originally built around a US Naval Base. During the war, the city's economy grew as it tended to the needs of sailors and marines that were being shipped back and forth from the front lines. Today, New Zanzibar is still a resort town, and US Armed forces still pass through its harbor on their way to other assignments. New Zanzibar's high speed rail lines are almost essential for traversing the city, and rails run every 5 minutes to most major locations. Sadly, trains leading to the suburbs only run hourly, a problem frequently discussed by the city council.

New Zanzibar Island has few public schools. Outside of the city of New Zanzibar, there are scattered schoolhouses, generally overcrowded and dropout rates are high. In New Zanzibar, there is a single public school tending to the needs of the majority of the island: St. Joseph's Academy. Massive in scope, it is divided into several buildings, a primary education building, a secondary education building, and a club and sports building which houses the equipment and space needed for sporting events. Because most of the Island sends their children to St. Joseph's, it also has a very large public dorm nearby to service those who attend from outside the city. Dorm life is a large part of New Zanzibar culture because of this.

New Zanzibar Island's culture derives primarily from its American roots. English is the official language, and most American holidays are honored. Their Japanese natives show their influence typically through events such as the school festival, holidays such as Children's Day, and their takes on how to best celebrate holidays such as Valentine's and Christmas. Most of the Island's residents find this to be charming, even if they aren't ethnic Japanese or are recent immigrants. There is one curious event that is unique to the Island's culture, and that is August 13th: Zanzibar Fitness Day. Originating from the physical fitness test the US Marines would conduct while stationed at the Island, Zanzibar Fitness Day is an island wide athletic meet, where the best and brightest athletes and other talented individuals appear to compete at various events. Everything from running to swimming, and even a dancing competition are held on Zanzibar Fitness Day.

And that's all you generally need to know about New Zanzibar Island at the moment.

Well things just got incredibly suspicious.

Changes to the combat system:

After having some talks with a few concerned posters, I've increased the number of exchanges in a combat from 3 to 4, and you require 3 points to claim victory. The reason behind this is to allow a greater room for error on the part of the players. You can now afford to make two mistakes, instead of just one.

Also, I am introducing Renegade Abilities to the system. Renegade Abilities allow you to break the normal rules in predefined ways. You have already gained your first power, so I will describe it below.

HOWL OF DOMINANCE: Declare this power when using a Guard. Your Guard can now defeat Crash attacks as well as Strike attacks. You may only use this power once per scenario.

In keeping with the original theme of Double Cross, relationships are an important part of gaining Renegade Abilities. Each Major NPC will be associated with a power Wild Card can learn. In general, strengthening a relationship leads to the formation of new Renegade Abilities, but a relationship need not be positive. As long as the relationship meaningfully progresses in some fashion, Wild Card will learn from it and grow. This also means that stagnant, yes-man relationships lead nowhere.

Finally, where powers are concerned, a Scenario is a major plot arc. We have just concluded a scenario, for example.

oh... this is intriguing

Oh boy. More combat things that we'll never use.

Ah, just give me a couple minutes to bring it up

That sounds much better than the basic rock-paper-scissors thing that was going on before.

You should set up a pastebin for the Renegade Abilities, then.

Make sure to actually use an account and not post it as a guest so that you can actually edit it later.

>Strike Successful
You can feel it. The moment just before the spikes hit, you can feel your instincts take over. Was this what Lunatic was talking about? Your muscles swell, your claws manifest, you can feel the fur growing, your senses sharpening even more. It's not the clumsy howl, it's not those crude mutations you made when you first transformed. This is your strength, your real strength.

Your conscious mind tells you to jump to the side, to jump over them, but your instincts tell you differently. You leap forward, into the path of the spikes. You twist over and around them, allowing them to fly past you harmlessly. Yeager, with his fist still rooted to the ground, cannot move as you approach him. You lash out with your claws, slicing through inches of metal at a time, filling the air with the sound of your hurried breath and the screeching of shorn steel. With a final kick, you send Yeager tumbling backward.

You leap upon his form, expecting him to go prone any second, but he doesn't. You can hear him shout as his armor locks into place, becoming immovable. Your body slams into the armor and impales itself on the spikes. You cry out and rip yourself free, but the damage is done. With this many wounds at once, you feel a little woozy.

Yeager tucks his head down, bringing his arms to his waist and charges at you. It's a football tackle! He smashes into you, but before you can go far, he swings around, catching you on his armor's spikes. Time and again, he swerves around you, slashing you and knocking you about. You try to swing, but every attack gets caught in his armor's thorns. You can't keep doing this!
>>
>>29670186
>Double Guard
>Cross-Counter!
You have to stop his movement, no matter what! You snarl, focusing all your power on your arms and brace yourself for his next charge. Instead of attempting to strike first, you take the full force of his attack on your body, but you hold him in place.

"Wild Card, what do you think you're--"

Shut up! You need to focus. You can feel the spikes lodge themselves within you and Yeager is multiplying them by the second. If you're going to win this, you need to do it now. You focus your strength onto your arms and grab his armor. If he likes this tin can so much, he can just stay in it! You squeeze with everything you have, listening to the metal creak and bend as it crumples inward. Yeager yells, and you can hear the pop of his bones as the breastplate buckles inward. In response, the armor spikes grow even longer, shooting clean through you and twisting around into wicked barbs.

But if it comes down to toughness...you've already won this! With a final burst of strength, you collapse the armor inward a few more inches. Yeager immediately slumps over, and his armor begins to dissolve. You see Yeager, broken and bloodied, but still alive, slump to the ground. You can't stay standing for much longer either, and immediately fall backward.

You gulp for air as your lungs try to put themselves back together, and as your vision returns to normal, you see Claire standing above you. She seems to be doing a small golf clap.

"Well done. I must say your coat is luxurious, despite the blood. I think I shall help myself while you nap..."

You feel a little proud, but your last thought before passing out is how you wish anyone but her had seen you fight.

(I think that puts everything where it should be, finally)

I will make a pastebin or a googledoc or something for the Renegade abilities, as well as any other fluff I release. I won't make it required reading at any point, because I don't think it's fair to expect that, just like I won't make you guys read the DX corebook
>>
>>29670070
Yes, like in the original Double Cross, relationships don't have to be hugs and love.

>>29670072
Not all of them will deal with combat, trust me. I don't want to write enough fight scenes to conceivably use that many anyway.

Anyway, I'm fielding any other questions and comments now. Remember, my motivation is directly linked to seeing discussion and stuff
>>
>>29670310
Is claire the forgotten childhood friend we recalled in that one dream sequence?
>>
>>29670310
Just how expensive would Overed drugs be?
>>
>>29670261
As we progress is there any chance we'll start dying less during these fights?
>>
>>29670329
I can't just answer yes or no on something like that. It would ruin it no matter what I said.

>>29670338
Very. Various Criminal organizations have become aware of the Renegade, and often use what Overed they can get their hands on to develop designer drugs.

>>29670361
Absolutely. However, I do enjoy the freedom that the Chimera's high speed generation gives my writing.

Well, are we meeting the loli Renegade Being from Nexus later in the quest, or other Renegade Beings? Also, how much are you drawing from the DX Core book, are you using the extended backstory form the Advanced Rule Book?
>>
>>29670310
given that renegade can infect rocks, will we be fighting a golem uprising/the rise of the machines at some point?
>>
>>29670385
Are there any well known criminal groups in Zanzibarland?

On another note I kind of want to see a rock go rogue and terrorize the island.
>>
>>29670396
Outside of a couple exceptions, I probably won't have you meet up with too many big name NPCs from the books. It's a possibility, however. You will definitely meet with some Renegade Beings.

As far as the corebook and the advanced book, I use them both as starting points for constructing my take on the setting. You can generally hold the basic ideas to be true.

>>29670428
It's certainly possible. Those would be excellent examples of Renegade Beings.

Well, WE won't. But others might.

>regen fight answer
Oh that's fine, I was just curious.

>Claire question answer
Oh? I had assumed Chief was our childhood friend given that she actually seems to have an interest in us and not just our fur.
>>
>>29670453
There are several criminal groups active in New Zanzibar. There is the Tsukiyo family, a clan of Yakuza who expanded from Honshu. They are suspected to be behind the abduction of many Overed. Beyond that, there is the local born Black Boots, a territorial, violent gang that deals mostly in drugs. Both are not considered to be large problems.

>>29670486
>Oh? I had assumed Chief was our childhood friend given that she actually seems to have an interest in us and not just our fur.
I can't really answer that question about any of the characters, because to confirm or deny would ruin the mystery.
>>
>>29670476
The entire island is an Overed.
>>
>>29670712
and then wild card got to play shadow of the colossus for real

if minerals can become overed, does that mean your skeleton can become overed independent of the person it's wearing?
>>
>>29670790
Anything is possible. Probably not that, however.
>>
Anyway, if there are no more questions, I'll go eat dinner or something. I will check back later, of course.
>>
>>29670470
New to this quest, jsut finished the archives.

Give me a description of his warform and I think I might be able to draw something up.

He was an xeno dude you know from aliens but now we got fucking fur.

Brown fur so think of us as....a fucking bear.
>>

Also, awesome quest so far.
>>
>>29672562
Right now, he doesn't completely change. He hasn't learned to yet. It would be best to describe him as a wolfman of early Hollywood, a mostly human face and features, but with thick features and lots of hair.
