After some discussion at the end of the last thread, and thank you for the feedback, I’ve decided to change the rules slightly. 1d100 for skill checks. One of the first three rolls must be below the DC to pass.1-5 crit success, 96-100 crit fail, but an ordinary roll can negate the critical. ie. all three rolls must fail (and one must crit fail) for the skill check to be critically failed. If a success is rolled, the failure is no longer critical and the skill check is an ordinary fail.

Also, I’ll occasionally ask for 1d100 rolls without a DC for some social skill checks; these checks cannot crit, and I’ll take an average of the first three rolls to get a rough idea of how well Ash navigates social situations, although I’ll also take into account write-in suggestions for dialogue.

~~~
It’s Sunday afternoon and you’re playing Quest for Arcadia. You’ve teamed up with Lily, Trish and Shrike to do some levelling and go exploring. Things haven’t been going entirely to plan. You descended down into the chasm, and came across a ruined tower, within which you woke some sort of spirit called Old Waily.
You defeated it, just, and you, Lily, and Trish are now lying on the floor and waiting for your hitpoints to regenerate. Above you, you can hear more spirits floating around, and Shrike has borrowed Lily’s staff and is defending the staircase while you recover.
Earlier, Emily invited you out to dinner with her and her friends, and you haven’t decided yet if you’ll go or not.
Shrike leaps aside and you hear a hideous wail. You know this attack will stun anyone caught in it. Shrike darts back in and swings Lily’s staff. You hear it connect with the leather book.
“This thing is great,” Shrike says, following up with glee.
“What a waste of exp,” Lily murmurs.
You select Ascend from the list. As always, the game doesn't deign to tell you what it does.
Shrike batters away at the spirit and then leaps backwards as its remains explode.
"The rest are all clustered at the top of the stairs," he tells you. And indeed he is attacked by nothing more until the three of you regain your hitpoints and get to your feet.
Lily takes her staff back.
As Shrike had described, you can see several of the spirits clustered at the top of the stairs, staring at you sadly, their books in hand.
You take a deep breath, lift your head, and ASCEND.
"Whoa!" Trish is obliged to duck out of the way as a pair of wings, similar to those that decorated Lily's falling angel, sprout from your back. They look unlikely to actually work, and they barely move, but nevertheless you find yourself slowly lifting off the floor.
"Mind your head," Lily says.
"Outta the way!" you say, not certain how long your wings are going to last, and you won't be able to re-cast them in a hurry either. Shrike backs up against the wall to give you space. Your wings shouldn't really fit in the stairwell, but they merely bend, painlessly, allowing you to fit without slowing you down.
And they're not very fast. Nowhere near as fast as Lily's square of earth, at least, but you suppose that makes sense for a first-rank ability. You feel more like an albatross than a swallow, slowly building momentum as you fly up the stairs.
You can see translucent bony jaws opening.
Your hear the end of your weapon hit across the three books as your soar over the heads of the spirits.
"Yeah!" You hear Trish and Shrike bound up the stairs after you. You turn your head in time to see Trish swing her massive Verdant steel sword across the assembled group.
You have slain Old Waily.
You have slain Old Waily.
You have slain Old Waily.
Oh hey, another exp point. You're probably not supposed to be down here at this level.
"Shit." Trish and Shrike tumble back down the steps as the books start to shudder.
And your wings fade. You tumble down onto the dusty floorboards, luckily out of the blast radius, as the remains of the spirits explode, splintering the wood at their feet. The blast wave ruffles your hair and clothes.
Your wings lasted, you think, about thirty seconds.
You lift your head. You're on the second floor. The room is circular, and there are broken leadlight windows in four directions. On the walls between them are a number of paintings, all of the same rather sad looking woman.
There are bits of broken furniture, including chests of drawers and a writing desk, many cobwebs and a thick layer of dust.
The stairs continue upwards. All is quiet save for you and your friends.
You put your exp point into your weapons skill, it seems like a sensible thing to do. As you examine the level-up screen, you note that the third ranking Avatar ability is Invoke.
Trish joins you. "I love this sword," she tells you fervently.
"Can you watch the stairs?" you ask, she nods and stations herself.
It sounds like Lily and Shrike are searching the ground floor, so you decide to search this one. In the chest of drawers you find rotting cloth, empty bottles of perfume, and twenty-three coins.
There's a pair of lady's leather shoes under the desk, and inside one you find a small, slightly flattened metal ring; a Piece of Arcadia. The desk itself holds nothing of interest.
Shrike and Lily join you with what they found downstairs; only a few coins were of interest. You all get nine each.
There are four windows. One overlooks the way you arrived. Two face towards the distant walls of the chasm, one on each side, beyond the swampy landscape. The fourth overlooks a low hill, upon which is a graveyard. You can see headstones and the cracked slabs of tombs, leading up towards a mausoleum at the crest of the hill.
The others see you looking and join you.
"The graveyard!" Lily says with satisfaction.
"A jumping puzzle," Shrike points out. Beyond the tower the ground is almost completely dead; it must be heaving with Wandering Hands. The only safe places to stand are on the fallen tower stones and the tombs themselves.
"Let's worry about it later," Lily says. "We've got one more floor."
>>29636190
A voice, a hollow female voice, floats out from beyond the door.
"They said that my tears would become jewels. So I cried, and cried for them. But they are only tears and will forever be so." A pause, and then she continues, her voice starting to break, either with grief or anger. "I will not stand to see my sorrow disturbed again!"
Lily tugs at your sleeve and whispers in your ear, "Sounds like a boss. We're being given a chance to retreat or strategise."
"We're sitting ducks in this doorway," Trish says. "When we go in we'll have to split up fast."
"I could draw her attention through the windows while you guys go in," Lily says.
After the success of the last fight, everyone is pumped for the next, and no one suggests going back.
Lily nods and proceeds downstairs. You can hear weeping sounds from beyond the door now.
"I think we're doing her a favour," Shrike observes.
You wait for a short while and then you hear the sound of breaking glass and an unholy scream of rage.
You kick the door in, dart in, and dodge to the left. You're in an elegantly appointed bedroom, with lit lanterns in sconces around the walls, cheerful wallpaper, and bright and cozy furniture. A large canopy bed is off to one side.
Standing at the window opposite you, glaring out at Lily who is somewhere outside, is a woman wearing a long blue silk gown. You can't see her face, but each of her hands terminates in razor sharp gleaming claws rather than fingers, and she screams out the window, loud enough to hurt your ears, but luckily nothing else.
"Avoid that!" Lily calls. You see the woman's head snap back as Lily smacks her through the window with her staff before flying out of range again.
Trish sees her chance, lifts her sword, and charges across the plush carpet.
You grab Trish's collar and tugs and she gets the hint. You stagger across the room, noting that Shrike already took refuge in the stairwell from the scream. He's heading back in when he sees you leaving and stops.
"Let her have it, Lily!" you yell as you pull the door shut behind you.
You can't hear it clearly, but your skin still crawls at that word. And then there is a brief moment of silence. You can picture the angel falling, faster and faster.
THOOM!
You can feel the impact through the walls and floor and the three of you stagger slightly, as the sound of breaking rock and splintering wood reverberates through the building. You wonder if the whole thing is going to come down, but other than a shower of dust, the stairwell remains intact.
"No," you hear the boss sob.
You kick open the door, and it sticks slightly, but you realise it's now almost entirely rotten. The room is not merely in shambles after the roof has caved in, but the fine furnishings are just gone; all that's left is rotting and dusty remains, and the lamps are shattered and cold.
In the center of the room, the woman stands, her head drooping. Her fine dress is in rags, and only a few shreds of skin stick to her emaciated skeleton. Her eye sockets burn with fury, and her long silver claws flex at the ends of her skeletal fingers. The glamour has worn off.
You nock an arrow and let fly but it sings past her head.
With the roof gone, Lily flies in overhead and leaps off her square of eart,h swinging her staff. The boss retaliates and Lily leaps back out of the way onto her artifact.
The boss is winding up again to scream, but her head is pointed at the sky, where Lily is floating safely out of reach, waving her middle finger.
You have slain Wistrasa, Lady of Sorrows.
The head lands on a pile of rubble and rolls to a stop.
You hear Trish sigh with relief behind you. And then Trish and Shrike are patting you on the back and congratulating you on your attack.
Lily floats down and hops off her artifact, grinning. You take a moment to celebrate your victory.
"You're really gutsy," Lily tells Trish.
Shrike is looking a bit downcast. "I swear I'm going to make this blood shard into an arrow of death. Next time guys, you'll see." He sighs.
The room is a mess. Lily tells you that there should be a chest in here somewhere, given she was a boss and all, but it's buried under all the rubble.
The four of you set about clearing it away, tossing stones over the side and unearthing the ruins of the old furniture. Finally, you find the tatted silk and rotted wood of the bed, and Trish uses her sword to chop it up into more manageable pieces.
Underneath, finally, is the chest.
Lily goes over the body, and at the end, you set out the loot in the middle of the room to divy it up.
There's money in the chest. Seventy-three coins each. That's the easy bit. There's also one set of Wistrasa's Claws, eight bluish crystals in a teardrop shape called Tears of the Lady, and a Diamond Necklace Shrike unearthed from a chest of drawers.
The four of you sit on the floor, or rather, you and Trish lie flat to get your hitpoints back, and discuss how to divide it up.
Trish says Shrike can have his pick before her. He wants the claws. Lily is eyeing off the crystals. Both the latter objects can be made into armour, and the claws can also be made into a weapon. Lily warns it'll be expensive, however.
What do you want?
>The crystals.
>The necklace.
>The claws.
>Cut the necklace up and divide the tears among yourselves for maximum fairness. Split the claws between yourself and Shrike; one hand each.
>Write in.
>Quit Arcadia.
Claws, Maybe we could put a blade on the other end of the glaive and get dual-efficacy.
Split the crystals with Lily.
We have a decent weapon. Lets go for armor since we had two near death experiances lately.
Split the crystals with Lily. Meat are equipment-dependant, they'll be more useful to use with better kit.
Let's barter some of our coins with Trish and Shrike for that bleeding metal stuff we got from from the gargoyles. Bleed-Out arrows sound great for leading an attack.
"I definitely need some new armour," you say. "Those crystals might do the job."
"Okay," Lily says. "That's fair enough. "Let's say we split the crystals, Shrike gets the claws, and Trish gets the diamonds."
"I love it!" Shrike says. 'I am so down with this deal." He's practically drooling over the claws.
"You're going to want a loan, aren't you?" Trish says.
"I gave you a loan to make your sword," Shrike reminds her.
>>29639612
"I'll buy those blood shards off you," you say to Trish and Shrike, since they seem short on cash. It occurs to you that you might be short on cash as well, but money can be found all over the place.
They exchange a glance.
"Fifteen coins each," Shrike says.
>You mercenary. I'll give you ten.
>Take the deal.
>Dispute something else.
>Write in.
>Quit Arcadia.
They're our friends and we did sort of swindle the Verdant Steel without telling them.
"Deal."
You hand over the cash, and they give you their Bloodletter Iron. You also receive four of the crystal tears.
"You should be able to make something with a bit of magical resistance," Lily tells you, pocketing her share.
"I am going to make the most awesome bow," Shrike says.
Your hitpoints and spirit points have regenerated, and you sit up. The mist above you looks a bit darker and gloomier than you remember.
"So, what now?" Lily asks.
>Head back; by the time we're somewhere safe it'll be approaching dinnertime.
>Go onwards to the graveyard.
>Take a break for dinner; a couple of hours maybe, and log back in together to continue. Assuming the boss won't respawn by then.
>Write in.
I think we scheduled something tonight. Might as well do it. Also I kinda want to see what goes wrong in the real world next.
Let's try to be sociable IRL, and I don't want to hang around here.
Ask if bosses will respawn in a couple of hours.
"Would it be safe to log out here?" you ask. "We could log out for food and them come back and keep going, if you guys want to that is."
"I'm okay with continuing, after dinner but not too late," Trish says. "It is Sunday." The others nod; that sounds reasonable.
"The boss will respawn, but not here," Lily says. "This world likes changing, so she'll show up in a different dungeon miles away. Most places are pretty safe for about twenty-four hours after you clear them. It's common to see people following a high-level player to get to new places but that's a risky strategy. We'll be fine here for now though."
You talk it over and agree to meet back in three hours. That should give you plenty of time to get over to that cafe you were invited to and back again; assuming you go. Either way, you don't intend to spend hours chatting with Emily's friends.
Lily doesn't log out, she says she's going to chat with friends for a while via her mirror before dinner.
"I'm just reheating a pizza anyway," she laughs.
You bid the others farewell, and log out.
You get the impression that everyone is in roughly similar time-zones.
This seems like a good place to stop. Sorry to cut things a bit short; it did take a little while to get started today. Next thread will be Wednesday evening EST at a more usual time.
Can't hang around to chat today.
Thanks as always for playing.
