The train clacks heavily on the rails that stretch across the dark russet sands, and you look out over the expanse. In the distance, you can see your destination: Jamestown, an old fortress reclaimed for use as a town.

But there's a lot of abandoned fortresses, these days. Abandoned everything, really - When the Change struck, though no one alive today was there for it, it did hard, quick work. Some folks say that it happened in a matter of minutes. As far as they know, this desert used to be a lush, beautiful forest.

But that doesn't really matter in the long run, does it? What's important is who you are, and what you can do.

CHOOSE YOUR CHARACTER:

>Dreanin Dregas
Sharpshooter, lawman, and loner, Dregas is on a mission to eradicate all the bandits, lowlifes, and assholes he can find. He is armed with a massive revolver. Perks: Wristbreaker (Can use Large firearms one handed), Tenacity (Can continue fighting even if Morale is broken, albiet at reduced effectiveness.), Grit (Injuries do not affect shooting skill.).

>Tobias Crane
A magus of many skills, but mostly fire. You're looking for love, for adventure, and for a solid night's sleep - which you haven't had for years. Even now, the bags under your eyes betray the weeks you've been running on naps alone. He's armed with a dagger and a spellbook. Perks: Insomniac (Alert even in night hours), Spellcaster (Can use magic), Mutation Inured (Mutations cannot affect you negatively aside from social events)

>More perspective options in next post, please wait warmly.
>>
>Ace
You probably shouldn't be on this train. It's bad for your health - all the voices, all the mental issues, all right there in your head. Makes you twitch. But this is a big job, of course. Lotsa money. Lotsa money means lotsa guns. And lotsa guns means MORE money! Perks: Raider (No Morale or Sanity loss from violence) Psionic Type A (You can hear voices from other people's thoughts. These will appear in spoiler text.) Blood and Sand (You are adept at melee even in unsure footing.)

>The Lost Girl
You have no name, you have no knowledge. You just woke up one day, in a weird pod, and you were told to go with a gunslinger. (Unknown perks and skills.)

They call you Ace.

They always have. You feel the band around your head. With a slow motion, you reach into you bag and slide a deck of playing cards over the table, splaying out the whole deck in a row, face down. A man across the aisle looks over at you. You admit he's right What a punk, how'd he get on but you don't care. You never have. Fingers slide over the pack. Fingerless gloved hands select a card and slide it into the leather band on your head, a smile crossing your face.

There's nothing you love more than panic, and as you rise, people notice you. A grin crosses your face. Patchwork clothes, mostly harnesses, decorate your slim upper body, covered with scars, You unholster you weapon and laugh.
"I never understood why people take trains these days!" you call out. "It's suicide." you press the gun to your head and jerk your head away. "Bang."

That's the cue. Four of your men stand up, and start to shoot. Three of the people on the train take cover and you start to join in, barely missing the man with the duster. The girl in white follows him, frightened, and a cloaked fellow goes the other way. A spellbook - He's a mage. A red spellbook, too, you swear. You take in the panic as people die around you, their thoughts fizzling out in your skull under the automatic fire of your men.

"Looks like most of them, Ace, for this car. Which one we hit next?"

You ponder. Where to go...? you wonder, fingering the machete in your belt.

"Storm the next car!" you say, "We gotta hit that mage!"

The men nod. While you feel their doubt, you draw your weapon with a sick grin. Machete and pistol in hand, you kick in the door, Gotta hit him when he comes in... ducking under the fireball you heard coming from the mind of the mage.

Ain't no one can surprise Ace, you think as you roll in. You swing at the cloaked fellow, who knocks aside your attack with a plated sleeve, going for his own attack. You stand off, squared.

>Shoot him! He might have a chance to cast, but it's inconse- incon... It doesn't matter! You'll kill him and heal up with the bitches back home.

You move in, hacking and slashing, but the mage is better with a dagger alone than you are with machete and gun. He leaps back, passing his fingers over the blade, and you rush in - only for the glowing dagger to cut through the base of your machete in a strong blow.

Bagged eyes stare up at yours as he plants a boot in your chest. His weak kick isn't enough to knock you over, but it's enough to send you back as he gestures at the door and you lift your weapon. Pop pop pop, three in the leg before he manages to crawl out of the train and hop out as you fire more, landing shots in the shoulder and arm. You sigh. He's dead, but your melee weapon is shot.

You toss aside the handle and grunt. Where now?

"Fuck it. It's hard to get off a moving train. Jimmy." you say, pointing. My name is Isaac. "Don't give a shit. Lead the way."

He blinks, a little confused, then leads you to the back car, kicking in the door. To be honest, you're not here for the girl. You're here for the vault in the back, the girl is just bonus. A loud gunshot rips through the space between the cars, and the man's head simply vanishes in red mist.

"You boys just get off the train a'fore I can shoot /all/ you sonsabitches!"

"You killed Jimmy, you ass!" you scream. No, wait, Isaac. Shit. You really oughta work on that... Still. You take cover on the side of the door, one man covering the other side. Your other boy hides behind some benches.

You take a deep breath.

You hunker down, focusing your mind, trying to get a bead on the gunman's.

But then the weirdest thing happens. You've never had trouble with this before - normally it's just a matter of how long you last. But it feels like you slam into a brick wall, solid and pure, smooth and perfect. Mentally, you hammer at it, but the effort threatens to exhaust you.

"Damnit!" you growl. "Freddy!" It's James... "Get in there!"

James ducks low, and then you signal your other two to follow behind. One shot. Two shots. Then automatic fire and a loud click.

A jam?!

You round the corner to see a wounded gunman tumble out of the train. The young woman - hardly a girl, you note, is pressed against the back wall, and you grin.

Until you come to a realization.

You can't fucking hear her mind.

You put the gun to her head, and her eyes go wide. "Sorry." you say, pulling the trigger. You kick the body from the train and slide your fingers through your hair as you kneel beside the vault.

"We got it." you say, ginning. "Jerry!"

There's a pause. "Jerry?"

"Y-yeah." he walks over, looking it over. "Gimme a second." he grumbles, working at the combination. Sooner, rather than later, he pulls it open.

You grin. Poker chips.

So much fucking chip. You could buy a house. Or a lot of ammo and guns and sheet metal and god, you can hardly wait. Going back to the tents has never sounded so sweet. Jesters made it big today!

You laugh, and they laugh with you, as you shut the vault on Jerry's fingers, who winces. You all laugh harder as he works to slide it onto a sled for you, and you all heave it to the back of the train. One by one you get off, yourself and the safe last.

Sweet success.

You slide your fingers over the ace of spades in your headband, over your ear.

You pluck the card from your headband and direct two men to pulling the vault along with you while you idly shuffle the deck and walk. It's fairly far to the Tents, but not too far - a day at best from the tracks. You would go and collect eyeballs, but that would take too damn long and you have no damn tools.

Fucking mages.

Eventually, you make your way to the massive tents - big red and white things that stand out in the sand on an old parade ground. It was a lot of work to get the sand out, but some torture of an air magus took care of it with some ease. You don't let magi into the Jokers, on principle - too much casting and they become horrible monsters, ready to tear you apart. And really fucking hard to kill. Seems the boys have put new bleeders at the top of the tents, the reds look more vivid now.

Boys had to take down the streamers, though, they were drying up. Damn shame.

You make your way, vault in tow, to your 'banker', a stiff, unfeeling woman. Strong and capable, though, which is what counts around her. She's tall, with short, short hair, glasses, and a figure like a damn linebacker - solid as hell. Jerry opens the vault for her and she pulls out the racks and sets them on her counter.

"At least ten thousand." she says. "Enough for a major rehaul of some things." she raises eyebrows. "And that's even with setting aside for food and water." she adds happily. "Solid haul."

>+ 10 500 chip!

You mull this over. You could feasably use that chip for any number of things, from better cages, more cages, armoring the tent and securing the grounds, rearming your men, armoring your men, expanding the grounds....

You tell Martha you want the grounds fortified - some proper walls, maybe - and to get the men proper weapons. Swords and good revolvers. Nothing that is liable to jam. She nods, slamming the vault shut as you sit upon your throne in the ring, a throne with human leather and wood torn from men who had mutated into trees.

Forcibly mutated, mind - Green magi have very predictable mutations and torture came with a bonus that time. You lean back, thinking.

You close your eyes. There's two... Things here.

"Shit."

Fae. Elemental creatures. Might even be technofae - elemental beings of programming and mechanical objects. You can feel the air buzz. "We got fae, boys."

They freeze up. Fae are never good news - They hate humans, for some reason or another, and are all very hostile and hard - some say impossible - to kill. Which isn't true, you've killed technos before. Not normal ones, though. "They're all in the Generator."

"If we hit the supplies and beat feet..." Sal says.

You see it round the corner behind them. A mess of tech, wires, gears, and plugs, vaguely humanoid.

"Y0|_| Wil;l Sjskjlheee the 3|\|D 0|= Tiiiiidandiiiiimes."

You can hear it on both spectrums, and in your mind's eye, you see an ocean bubble into nothing with a sense of deep loss.

Is this post-apocalyptic Earth or something? Did an ancient evil awake and give people magic powers that turns them into monsters?
>>
>>29642510
So waifuing her was the good option?

Dammit

>waifufag
I agree with
>>29642331
now.
>>
maybe the lost gril has clones....
>>
>>29642534
Could always hope for a necromancer to pop up!
>>
>>29642533
Magic has always been there. Before, all the magical changes did was turn people into other races from extended use. Now, it is much, much more drastic.

No one is sure what caused the Change, all anyone knows is that FUCKING EVERYTHING hates humans. Demons, angels, Fae, critters, even people who use too much magic and become monsters.

Please, what are the chances that a Lost Girl would have tons and tons of clones stowed somewhere in a hidden base?

N-no

On the bright side, Angels only attack those with sin.

Which is everyone, now.

What about them anon?
>>
>>29642582
what would have happened if we had kept cutting, and was there any good loot we missed out on there?
>>
>>29642692
But everyone has sin. What difference does the Change make?
>>
>>29642708
You missed nothing.

However, overuse of CUT CUT CUT will result in mutations, as it's a magical ability.

>>29642744
That'd be telling.
>>
Even angels want to destroy us?
Can no one be trusted?
>>
>>29642812
Knives can be trusted.
>>
>>29642812
>Can no one be trusted?
Only other people. If that.
>>
>>29642768
does that meen we can use it sparingly (once a thread for example) and have it have not to bad an effect on us or is it just everytime you use it you get a little bit more fucked regardless of when you last used it?
>>
>>29642826
Lies, knives are the most likely thing to stab us in the back!
>>
>>29642856
>or is it just everytime you use it you get a little bit more fucked regardless of when you last used it?

That. Magic's the same way in general. You can tell a caster who's been in it for a while by the mutations.

Yes, there are children in the setting who have inherent magical ability and have used it without thought to the mutations and have thus become thoughtless monsters.
>>
>>29642909
then Ace has the right idea of "fuck mages and magic" since magic a shit.
>>
>>29642909
if we use magic enough will we have to start rolling for mutation?
>>
>>29643068
Magic is terrible on every scale. Facing it is horrifying, since some of the schools can simply erase matter from existense. Using it is also horrifying, as mutations range from awesome (I GOT WINGS, MA!) to terrible (I have no eyes anymore...)
>>
>>29643092
>if we use magic enough will we have to start rolling for mutation?
What you roll for is resisting the urge to release oneself from the pain and let go.

I roll the mutation.
>>
>>29643102
im almost tempted to keep letting Ace use the magic sword untill he gets one mutation just to see what happens because if he gets something good he could become a beast, imagine 4 armed Ace with 2 guns and 2 knives. but he could just as easily have his flesh melt off the bone.
>>
>>29643299
But then he would be a psychic skeleton bandit. Or would that be too spooky for you?

Oh god please no.
