You are Flying officer Julian Reber of the Royal Air Force. You joined the RAF to fight the BETA, the alien swarm that now nearly dominates the entire Eurasian continent. After a week spent fighting Russian black ops team, you were reassigned to Project Round Table, the spearhead of the European Union's fevered rush to reclaim Europe for humanity. You've met your CIC, Pilot officer Vivian Knight, the chief engineer, Flight lieutenant Mary Wright, and your element lead and roommate, Flying officer Elaine Robinson.

You also learned that, in a few hours, you will be part of a massive operation to push 50,000 BETA out of Calais and establish a proper forward operating base on the continent. Your squadron's job in this operation will be to clear out the Laser-class BETA. You are not sure if a squadron of Tactical Surface Fighters actually carries enough ammunitions to do this.

You are now on your way to Dover castle, the base of the honoured Cerberus battalion, which will also be participating in this operation. Your commanding officer, Group captain Richard Hall, needs to finalize the operation and he requested your presence, as well as that of your element lead and your CIC. While your presence is not required, he thought it would be an appropriate courtesy, since your odds of surviving this operation are the lowest.

Hall leads you, Knight and Robinson through the halls of Dover base. The guards only stop you occasionally to exchange greetings with Hall.

It only takes you a short while to reach the Cerberus battalion's command centre. The battalion's commanders are already there waiting for you.

You've seen pictures of Wilfried von Aichberger, but they all fall short of the real thing. Tall, built, stylish, and wearing his coat like a cape, his figure pulls your gaze no matter how hard you try to look elsewhere.

Until you see Gerhard von Ralerstein's moustache.

The gloss, the sleekness of it, the elegant curve - you've never seen anything like it in your entire life.

You're still staring at it as you fumble through your salute. Hall just exchanges greetings with them.

"Wilfried, Gerhard," he says. "I brought my storm vanguard and their CIC with me. I hope you don't mind."

"Not at all," Wilfried says as he beckons the four of you closer. "The laserjagd's storm vanguard has the lowest survival odds in this operation. They certainly have the right to be hear."

Hall nods to Knight and she moves to the maps to explain the operation.

"The operation will begin with a naval bombardment to clear the beach for landing. Once we have enough space for TSFs to land, the Cerberus battalion, as well as Camelot's Gawain, Lancelot, Bedivere and Arthur squadrons will make landfall. Cerberus will hold the beach while Camelot's forces push through the formation. Gawain and Lancelot will split off from the main group to flank the BETA, while Bedivere will escort Arthur squadron through the BETA and provide support as necessary. Once that's done, the Royal Navy will pull back and begin a standard bombardment of the battlefield Any questions so far?"

>(cont.)

>No questions.
>Can the Royal Navy perform a focused bombardment of the beach? It would make things easier for the main force.

Wasn't a focused bombardment of the Laser-class initially part of the plan as described to us earlier?

Killing laser-classes in a horde of BETA isn't all that hard. They won't be able to shoot us until it's too late.

As far as actual tactics, depending on the elevation on the beach, it might be more practical to bombard the center mass of the force in order to make the escort through to the laser-class safer and more expedient.

The safer the trip up the center is, the more TSFs are going to be operational by the time Bedivere and Arthur squadrons reach the objective, which in turn makes the laserjagd more likely to succeed.

"Can the Royal Navy perform a focused bombardment of the Laser-class BETA? We could really use something to draw their fire."

Knight turns over to Hall and Aichberger, who are pondering the map.

"Possibly," Aichberger says. "It'll make the fight on the beach harder, but you'll be more likely to survive, and if the number of Laser-class drops low enough that they can't intercept our artillery, the battle will be won. Cleaning up the beach won't be hard once we have air superiority."

Hall nods in agreement.

"All right then," he says. "We'll prioritize the Lasers for the secondary bombardment. The initial bombardment should clear most of the beach anyway. Knight, continue."

"Yes, sir," she says. "Once the BETA have been suppressed, Galahad and Tristan squadrons will make landfall and defend the area as we establish our new forward operating base. They're both at half-strength, but they have A-10s. If the BETA return, they should be able to hold the line long enough for us to deploy reinforcements."

Knight steps back from the map.

"That's the plan for now. We'll need to work out the details during the battle."

>Seems simple enough.

"Sounds simple enough. Anything else we need to know?"

"Just that no plan survives contact with the enemy," Hall says. "But you probably knew that already."

"We'll finish up the details," Aichberger says. "The three of you can help yourselves to breakfast in the meantime."

Before you can even react, Robinson grabs both you and Knight by the arms and drags you off.

"Come on," she says. "I'll introduce you to some people."

She pulls the two of you along through the hallways of the castle to the mess. Judging by how nice the furniture and the food look, this must be the Officers' Mess.

She lets go of your arm and waves to three women sitting at a nearby table, who quickly wave back.

"Morning, ladies," Robinson says. "This is Julian Reber - he's my wingmate - and this is Vivian Knight, our CIC. This is Ilfried, Lunateresia and Helgarose."

One of the women - Ilfriede - motions for you to sit next to her.

"Oh," she says, "so you're a storm vanguard?"

"That's right," you say, as you grab some food and sit next to her.

"So, do you ladies have any news on the Typhoon? I heard you were first in line to get it."

Lunateresia practically shoves Ilfriede out of the way so she can lean in closer to you.

"That's right, that's right," she says. "I feel really bad about leaving my Tornado, but you have to upgrade with the times."

"Right," you say. "The Tornado's a solid machine, but it's still being held back by the F-5 frame design."

"It's too bulky. The blade edge armour on the Typhoon really improves agility and defenses."

"It's a shame it won't roll out with stealth. You know the Americans are just going to call it a 2.5th generation TSF even if it beats the Raptor every other way."

"Who cares? It's not like the Raptor will ever see the front lines anyway. The Americans don't appreciate what it can do."

"I really wish the EU would develop a better melee weapon to go with Typhoon though. The Flugelberte's major advantage is that it's one-handed, so you can use it and an assault cannon at the same time for full range coverage, but I really want to try one of the Japanese halberds at least once."

The two of you go on talking about TSFs for nearly an hour as you absentmindedly eat your breakfast. You only snap out of it when Robinson slaps you on the back and tells you it's time to leave.

>(cont.)
>>
>>29612720
Your briefing is in an hour, which leaves just enough time for you and Robinson to clean up.

You've seen briefing rooms outfitted with desks and chairs that looked like they were stolen from a elementary school, but this is not one of them. The chairs are comfortably padded and there's a table with eight different brands of tea and coffee.

The seats are arranged by squadron and element, so you're next to Robinson. It looks like most of the battalion is here and Group captain Hall is standing at the front. He waits a few minutes longer for the rest of the room to fill out.

"All right, ladies," he says. "Time to get to work!"

The briefing itself is nothing you haven't heard before. Go in after the initial bombardment, follow Bedivere, kill Lasers through the best means possible, get out. You tune out as Hall gives the other squadrons their assignments.
The briefing ends at last and you follow Robinson to Arthur squadron's changing room by the hangars. You both pull out your blue-grey fortified suits and start getting changed.

You get changed in silence, focusing only on the sound of your breathing. Once you're done and the fortified suit contracts around your body you sit down and close your eyes for a moment. You feel Robinson sit next to you, but she doesn't say anything.

For one moment, you don't think about anything and your worries are all gone. Just what you needed.

You stand and offer Robinson your hand.

"Let's go kill a thousand lasers," you say.

"Damn right."

Robinson grabs your arm and pulls herself up. You head off towards your respective TSFs.

Flight Lieutenant Wright is waiting for you next to your Tornado and you give her a respectful salute.

"Good afternoon, ma'am."

"Good afternoon, Flying officer. Please be sure to tell me 'good afternoon' tomorrow as well."

With that, she takes her leave and you board your TSF. The mechanics clear the hangar and you follow Robinson out to your carrier.

The carriers leave the port with Bedivere squadron at the front and Arthur right behind. Lancelot squadron is to your left and Gawain is to your right. You're not sure where the Cerberus battalion.

The sight of the fleet is quite comforting. The four carriers are supported by destroyers, battleships and supply ships in case anyone runs out of ordinance. In a naval war, this task force could probably function independently for years. Against the BETA, you'll be lucky if you still have any naval support left by the time the battle's over.

Your communications display flickers and the image of Knight appears in your HUD.
"Arthur 3, this is Arthur Crown. Do you copy?"

"Arthur Crown, this is Arthur 3. I copy."

"Excellent," Knight says. "We are beginning the initial bombardment. I'll let you know when it's time to hit the beach. Good luck."

Through the hull of your Tornado, you hear and feel hundreds of cannon firing.

The initial bombardment is aimed street at the beach and doesn't need to follow a wide arc. You can't see the exact results, but it looks like the Forts and the Tanks took the brunt of the damage. The smoke starts clearing up and it looks like the Laser-classes that were closest to the shore were also killed. The mass of BETA must have made it impossible for them to intercept the artillery in time. However, the Destroyers shrugged it off and there Grapplers were nowhere near the explosions

Your naval support starts to break off towards the cliff so they can have cover in case the Laser-classes at the back of the formation move closer to the shore. Meanwhile, the carriers begin launching their TSFs.

Bedivere squadron is soon flying towards the shore and it's now your turn to follow them.

"Arthur 3, engaging engine."

Robinson and you fly off the carrier and follow right behind Bedivere.

The Grapplers, Tanks and Destroyers are waiting for you. Fortunately, the combined fire of four full squadrons is enough to mow down the Grapplers and Tanks. Your formation also leaves the sides of the Destroyers open to your guns and they take massive losses, more than enough to secure a landing.

The water beneath your Tornado becomes sand as you rush forward and you see the Cerberus battalion close in on the fight, right behind Camelot's forces. All you need is to follow Bedivere through the BETA and finish off the Laser.

Which would make the former noteworthy to people who have access to the latter, even in spite of the fact that giant robots are obviously the more technically impressive of the two.

You see a line of Luxes waiting for you just outside the main BETA formation. Fortunately, you're surrounded by enough Destroyers, Grapplers and Forts that they can't get a clean shot. You open fire and shred them apart.

"Arthur 3," Robinson calls out to you over the comms. "I found a crater when can use for cover. Follow me. I'll call in the secondary bombardment."

You follow her and set your TSF down. You make sure to keep your guns pointed at the ridge of the crater in case something tries to jump in.

"Arthur Crown, this is Arthur 3. What's the situation?"

"Cerberus' assault was pushed back, but the Camelot squadrons are holding together. We're starting the secondary bombardment in a few minutes."

You don't have much time to figure out the details of your laserjagd.

The city ruins offer you some cover and there are some pockets of BETAs you can use for cover. You can also use the Laser classes' cooldown periods to your advantage, but with hundreds of them left, it'll take a while for you to kill so many that they can't keep a constant barrage of lasers up.

On the plus side, you have plenty of bullets left.

>>Take cover in the city and snipe Laser formations as possible.

I have an idea, it sounds stupid but it MIGHT just work if Laser class BETA don't shoot through over BETA even if they're dead. >Use the bombardment as a distraction
This is the reason we convinced them to focus the secondary bombardment on the laser-class, after all, so we should use the openings they give us to their fullest.

When there is a lull in artillery fire, we don't want to be caught in the open, though so we should additionally
>>Use smaller BETA formations as a shield.
Just trying to pick them off from cover isn't practical for clearing out a large group like this, especially not when our intent is to do so as quickly as possible.

On top of that, other BETA are the only cover that prevent laser class from firing on us even if we are only in partial cover. As was mentioned, the laser class will have more or less 100% uptime at the beginning phases of the operation, so using a form of cover that leaves us vulnerable for any length of time will make it very hard to do our job successfully.

Once we have them thinned out slightly, then taking cover in the city rather than using other BETA as cover starts to look a little more appealing.

Light Lasers have a delay of 12 seconds between shots. Heavy Lasers need 36. That's an eternity on the battlefield, but because of their numbers, that's more than enough to defend against a constant barrage of artillery. Still, a distraction is a distraction, and if you time it right and pick your cover carefully, you might be able to pull this off.

"Arthur 2, this is Arthur 3," you say. "I've got a plan."

"I'm all ears, Arthur 3."

"We'll wait for the Lasers to intercept their artillery and use their cooldown periods to move from cover to cover and gun them down."

"You do realize we'll be right in the middle of the bombardment, right?"

"Yeah, but it's the best plan. If we use BETA formations as cover, we'll be surrounded and in the middle of the bombardment, and sniping them from cover will take too long."

Robinson leans back and thinks for a moment.

"Okay," she says. "Let's do this."

"Arthur 2 and 3, this is Arthur Crown. We are commencing the secondary bombardment."

It only takes a few seconds for a heavy metal cloud to appear above your head and starts jamming your satellite feed. You switch your tactical network to your Tornado's infrared sensors.

Interestingly, Red/Black/(Gold) would also be fitting given our backstory.

Reber means our heritage is probably in German-speaking Switzerland, and this is the heraldry of the Swiss Canton (basically a State-analogue) of Bern, which is contains the de facto capital of the country (also Bern.)

Given that our mother was a diplomat, it's reasonably likely this was where we would've called home if not for the BETA.

Arthurian heraldry is really inconsistent, for what that's worth.

I don't expect us to end up using our own choice of a coat of arms, but a Red/Black color scheme in honor of what would've been our Swiss heraldry isn't entirely unreasonable if we ever end up reaching the point where we're a big enough deal to not get laughed out of the room for requesting a specific paint scheme on our TSF.

You charge out from your cover as the missiles are shot out of the air. You aim your cannons at the nearest formation and pull the trigger, hoping you'll have enough time to reach some sort of cover before one of them locks onto you and turns you into molten slag.

Then your right cannon reads empty just as you're charging a group of Heavy Lasers. There's no way you'll have time to reload and gun them down before you're shot down. Without hesitation, you drop your cannon and draw your battle axe.

You push your engines. You push your boosters. You get as much speed out of that Tornado as it can possibly give you. And then you swing.

Maybe the Heavy Lasers need some time to wind down. Maybe your axe hit a vital spot. You don't know.

What you do know is that the force of your strike wrenches the massive Heavy Laser around just as it's firing its beam.

Its gaze sweeps over nearly a quarter of the remaining Laser formations.

Combined with damage from the bombardments, nearly a third of the one thousand Lasers that we originally on the battlefield have been eliminated. You rush towards your next cover spot and meet Robinson there.

"WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?"

You don't know which one of you said that.

"Don't know, don't care."

You reload your remaining cannon and rush back out as the latest wave of missiles starts hitting. The Lasers, still recovering from the staggering loss they just took, completely fail to defend against it or against you.

You're charging through them at full speed, gunning with the left and slashing with the right. You don't repeat your miraculous attack, but there is absolutely nothing the Lasers can do to stop you. Assuming it's still this same sort of process (which is likely, given that we're still rolling MANYd20), these rolls probably aren't really terribly exciting.

That said, it's slightly less critical to be rolling extra-well here, given that we've already done a lot of the work clearing out the objective.

You're not just fighting a war. You're winning against the enemy that made planes obsolete. This isn't just what you needed or what the European Union needed, this is what the whole fucking world needed.

"Reber, are you still with me?"

Unfortunately, a sudden lull in the bombardment allows the Lasers to recover. The next barrage doesn't come close to landing any hits. Worse, your previous assaults have dispersed the Lasers. They can't spare any attention to hit you, but you can't get close to them to do any significant damage.

You join Robinson in another creator and check your element's status.

"I'm running low on ammo and my axes look like they're about to break," you say. "Looks like I've got three runs left."

"Same," Robinson says. "We better make them count then."

Well, if things go south, we can always begin making space colonies.

In the meantime, we could probably create a system that monitors each pilots flying and maneuvers, and creates a minor database for predicting the moves and helping with some really complex ones due to macros. Or, a breaker system that allows us to halt a pre-programmed move in order to faint out an opponent. Or, if we want to go with something weirder, a tactical network for sharing of combat data between all the TSFs in order to better prepare for combat. You get the idea, there's a lot of stuff we can make.

Data linking is already a thing, though I'm not sure whether or not it shares piloting data in real time. It does share allied TSF statuses as well as enemy positioning and topology, though.

>we could probably create a system that monitors each pilots flying and maneuvers, and creates a minor database for predicting the moves and helping with some really complex ones due to macros.
And no offense, but "We should just invent the XM3" probably isn't the MOST metagamey suggestion possible, but it's pretty close.

Another barrage of missile falls. It hits, it even hits hard, but it's not the overwhelming show of force you need to get the battle back on your side. At the very least, you need to get back and resupply.

"Arthur 3, this is Arthur 2," Robinson calls you through the comms. "We need to get back."

"Yeah, I know."

The rush is gone and victory is out of your grasp for now. For now.

You pull out and your tactical network comes back to full capacity. Arthur's lost a pilot, but Group captain Hall is still holding it together and that's what matter for now. In fact, he's quite surprised to see you alive.

"Robinson, Reber, how the bloody fucking hell are you still alive?"

"Sir, I'd tell you, but you won't believe it unless you see the flight recordings," Robinson says. "Anyway, we need to get out of here. We've got no bullets, no axes and we're too damn close to no fuel."

"Negative," Hall says. "Command won't let us pull out no matter what. The best we can get is some back up."

Normally, you'd call bullshit, but you're willing to make an exception just this once. There are thousands of dead Grapplers, Tanks and Destroyers splayed out all over the battlefield. The Forts haven't taken as many losses, but they're not a high priority, so long as nobody gets too close to them.

Then again, you know about all the thousands of Lasers you left dead back under the heavy metal cloud. Command doesn't have that excuse.

Well, at least they were nice enough to send back-up.

Presumably we could switch out melee weapons with some of the non-Storm Vanguards, given that they're more likely to be using their ranged weapons anyhow.

4 other TSFs with 1 high-durability melee weapon and one damaged one and 2 Storm Vanguards with 2 high-durability weapons is probably better than the alternative.

Making the switch might be a little difficult during combat, though, and fuel is an entirely different animal.

You head back towards the beach, Robinson trailing not far behind. Meanwhile, Knight comes back on your HUD.

"Robinson, Reber, you made it!"

It looks like she's been crying, but you can't tell if it was out of grief or joy. Probably.

"Arthur Crown, this is Arthur 2," Robinson says. "We're halfway through those Lasers, but we need resupply. We can still complete this mission."

"Right," Knight says. "The EU was willing to provide you with a TSF they had available. However, it's on loan from a foreign country, so whatever you do, do not wreck them."

Knight sends you a flight trajectory to an incoming carrier. As you get closer, you see two TSFs on its deck. One of them is a Tornado, but you don't recognize the other.

You land on the carrier, carefully not to obstruct the two TSFs that are presumably yours. You settle down and climb out of your cockpit to find a stereotypical government suit waiting for you.

"Flying officer Reber," he says. "You've trained on the Gekishin and Fubuki, right?"

"Yeah-"

Before you can say anything else, he grabs you by the shoulders and looks you straight in the eyes.

"Take the black TSF. Whatever you do, DO. NOT. WRECK. IT. Am I clear?"

"Yes, sir."

The man looks like he's going to vomit himself into unconsciousness, but he lets you go. You climb into your new TSF and sit in the cockpit. The OS is, obviously, in Japanese, but you know enough to get by and basic TSF ergonomics don't vary all that much. Combined with your computer skills, it doesn't take you a minute connect into Arthur's tactical network.

On your retinal display, you see the TSF's name: Type-00C Takemikazuchi.

"Arthur 3, this is Arthur 2. Let's get back in there."

"Arthur 2, this is Arthur 3. Lead the way."

You both fly off back towards the battlefield.

The Takemikazuchi is a lot more responsive than you're used to, but it's par for the course when it comes to Japanese machines, so you keep it under control. Robinson and you meet a mass of tanks and carve a bloody bath right through it.

In one smooth motion, you draw your sword and carve a Tank in half mid-flight. Your other arm, equipped with an assault cannon, fires into the swarm. With this concentration of Tanks, you don't even need to aim. You keep your sword low and use your engines to carve circles through the BETA. At the speed you're going, you don't even need to swing the thing.

Meanwhile, Bedivere and Arthur squadrons are tearing Grapplers apart. You're all still under pressure, but you're holding together.

You look at your squad's tactical network. You're fine, Robinson is fine, but the rest of the team is running low on ammo. Their fuel tanks are surprisingly full though.

You've mowed through half the Forts. At this point, it's just a question of hitting them with armour-piercing rounds from a distance or distracting them for a melee blow. Playing rodeo with a Fort isn't something a sane human would try, but by this point, everyone just wants to get the job done.

Victory is at hand.

Looking at your squadron, it looks like they won't last much longer. Even if their TSFs could only, you're not sure their bodies would. You've been riding the rush for a few hours yourself, but there's only so long that can last.

Fortunately, the Forts have been almost finished off.

The last of the Forts falls after you drive your sword through its back. This section of the battlefield is won.

The only thing left for you to do is finish your job.

"All units, this is Hall," the Group captain says. "We're getting out of here."

"Arthur 1, this is Arthur 3. There's still a loose end to tie up."

"Arthur 1, this is Arthur 2. I agree."

For a moment, it looks as if Hall was going to argue, but he ultimately relents.

"All right. Arthur 2 and 3, verify the status of the Laser-class BETA."

"Yes, sir."
"Yes, sir."

As it turns out, the Lasers took some bad hits while you were supporting the front lines. Weaving between buildings and BETA corpses, you gun down clusters of Laser formations as the missiles continue to fall. Between you, Robinson and the barrage, there are less than 200 of them left.

You can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

The laser interception stops and a rain of missiles heads towards the battlefield. You and Robinson rush back to shore. The world burns behind you.

In your HUD, Robinson is covered in sweat and generally looks like shit. You probably don't look much better.
