You are a wolf, and you are expanding your territory, but those that live on the land are fighting back. You have yet to find the other pack, but that does not mean you have found nothing. You are the alpha male of your pack, and you are trying to expand your territory. After being forced from your original territory by invading humans, you joined a nearby pack. Your strength grew as humans chased after you, hunting you, but you slew them and protected your new pack.

The prey in your new territory was wanting though. To thrive, you needed more, so you ventured with your pack downriver. The wolves who’s territory you are taking have yet to reveal themselves, and their scents are old. You explored the twisted and thorny woods with little fear, but then a voice whispered to you. It was passed along the branches and echoed through the shadows, and you followed it.

When you finally reached the clearing beneath the human settlement, your pack retreated with the previous alpha, Schatten. You were left to confront it alone. What you found was abhorrent. A twisted life of rotting thorns and vines that ensnare the living and strangle them. And now it has wrapped around two of your legs and stares at you with a bloodshot eye from the center of the gnarled oak.

You snarl at the nightmare. Whatever unnatural power animating it is permeating the entire forest. But it is slow, and vines are weak. The thorns are dug into your fur in hopes of ensnaring you like weak prey. When more vines rise from the wet snow around your paws, you jump back till the vines go taut. The thorns cinch down around you, digging into your flesh, but you pull more.

Blood spills into the snow as pain rips through your paws. The thorns gouge out some of your skin, but the vines break. Another half dozen of them rise out in front of you like spread arms. You could easily destroy all of them, but Nadel, die Verdrehte certainly wouldn’t die from it.

Around you, you can hear the howling of your pack. Something happened. Their scattered. You can hear Schatten in the direction of the stone construct. The sisters are nearer to the river, and the female wolf is between them somewhere. They’re panicked.

I love me some wolves (no, not in that way). But just a heads up, you know the guy who came up with the whole wolf alpha male pack leader stuff admits that its total bullshit and nothing like real wolves.

Nice little article about it here >http://io9.com/why-everything-you-know-about-wolf-packs-is-wrong-502754629

Still the whole alpha thing does work for wolves in zoos (kinda like kids in an orphanage, meanest toughest kid is the boss). But out in the world wolves are a bit like human families, mum, dad and the kids (which probably means someones going to try and use wolves as a way of proving bum sex is wrong or something. Would n't it be funny if in the attempt they were torn about by a wolf, a gay wolf at that....what was I talking about again?).

That article was written by Lauren Davis, a freelance writer and editor living in Berkeley, California. She collected and published The Comic Book Guide to the Mission, an anthology of comics about San Francisco’s Mission District, which came out this earlier year. When she’s not blogging about webcomics or harassing cartoonists, Lauren has intense conversations with her three-year-old Boxer, mostly about the location of his favorite squeaky toy.

Aside from that though, try reading the quest before saying "Nuh uh, you're being stupid.". Whitefang is a lone wolf the size of a small fucking bear, and fought his way into this new pack, our original alpha was our father, and Schatten is compliant only because he lost his powers and we could kill him easily. Alpha through might
>>
You bark as loudly as you can, hoping to draw your pack back around you, before you take off after the sounds of the female wolf. You run between briars that come alive as you run past them, and weave between trees, each with small eyes watching you as you run. Nadel is everywhere in this forest. You run, barking all the time, searching for the female wolf. The sounds of the other wolves seem to swim around you and you can hardly see the light of the sun in places.

Eventually, you’re certain that you should have passed the human trail, but you have yet to see it. The sounds of the sisters and Schatten seem to have switched sides, but you’re certain you’re still facing the same way.

Then you see the female wolf burst out into a small depression in front of you, chasing after the white blur of a hare against the mud and snow. She stops to make eye contact with you, but quickly takes off at a slow trot after the hare.

You have to get out before the sun sets, or you’ll never escape.

No no no, don’t

You bark at the female wolf, stopping her in her tracks. The hare disappears into the bushes and gone from sight. As you walk up to her, she ignores you and pushes through the bush after the hare. She quickly starts searching for the train again, but comes up with nothing. She looks to you, her expression a mix of annoyance and confusion.

Stupid wolf.

You can hear Schatten nearby, so you signal to the female wolf. The two of you start running through the woods after him, she hangs quite a few feet behind you. As you get closer and closer, more of the eyes open on the trees to watch you, but you never let any of the vines catch up to you. Schatten’s howling gets louder and louder as you get closer, but then he abruptly appears behind you.

Blood is trickling through his fur, Nadel must have gone after him as well. The black wolf raises his head to point to the stone construct, and then looks back to you. You can no longer hear the sisters.

You’ll never get out of here at this rate.

Schatten takes the lead, heading directly for the stone construct. You follow behind the black wolf, but the trees seem to be playing tricks on you. Whenever you lose sight of the construct for even an instant, it seems to reappear elsewhere, sometimes close, other times it jumps all the way to your side. This is a dangerous and twisted place.

But then you find the scent of humans and horses. The stone construct is slightly higher than the forest floor, and the scent seems to be pouring down from it. Eventually you manage to simply follow your nose rather than your eyes. Your vision seems to be twisted, but your nose never lies

The three of you reach the edge of the forest, near the stone construct. Trees had once stood closer to the construct, but they had been roughly hewn down over the course of the winter so the humans could burn them. The stone is identical to that of the mountains, but has been shaped into small cliffs and caves, human dens.

There’s a path through the rocks in the back. You can come find me if you use it.

The voice whispers to you as you watch the shadows of humans walk atop the outer wall. But then you hear the sisters. They’re barking for help.

The sun is about to set.

You start to back towards the twisted woods. When Schatten and the female wolf look at you, you shake your head between the barking of the sisters and the human den. Both of their tails are low, and their ears are back. You head into Nadel’s territory by yourself.

No, what are you doing wolf? How stupid can you be? You will die! Oh wait a minute. Hello there.

The voice disappears as you delve deeper into the woods. The way back seems much shorter than the way out. You quickly cross the distance at a careful lope. The briar patches and trees seem faintly familiar to you. But then the light you used to navigate fades. Night has descended.

A buzzing horde of insects awaken around you. What had been a relatively quiet woods is now filled with a static of wings fluttering. They crawl out from the trees and from beneath the mud all around you and spread their wings. Soon the bats will descend.

Then a blue light grows around you. A swarm of firebugs is gathering ahead of you. Beyond them you can hear the sisters. You step forward, to the edge of the clearing. Nadel’s oak has twisted around and changed. Layers and layers of ivy and vines still drape over it, but the branches have twisted around one another into two great branches like the arms of a human. The eye in its trunk is even larger than before, and shadows crawl up its body despite the light.

Nadel hasn’t spotted you yet, and seems focused on his transformation. He’s a monster, but he’s blind to you for now. The trees and the shadows give you enough concealment to follow around the outside of the clearing. Dozens of briar patches stir to life as you pass them, thick walls of thorns, much larger than what they were in the day time, but they do not catch you.

“Wolf Come. Wolf Go,” Nadel says, though he has no mouth. “Wolf Come. Wolf Go.” He turns his twisted body and nearly comes around to look at you, but stops. “Wolf Lost. Wolf Die.” You must be near where the sisters are, but it’s looking towards them “Wolf Die. Nadel Feed,” it says as it raises up its arm.

But then it stops. The creaking of wood and shifting of roots that had been undermining you stop, and they seem to lean away from you. Behind you is a simple path. A trail. A way out of the woods, back to safety.

The open path to your side, the quick escape to personal safety, tempts you greatly. You even start to trot down it, away from the monster that is Nadel. But you need a pack, you need your pack. You can hear the two sisters fighting, and you know they aren’t strong enough to handle Nadel. When the tree begins moving again, and the trail closes up behind you, you’re already on your way to their aide.

The bushes of thorns creeping out of the ground loom over the area they took shelter in, blocking even the light of the firebugs. But their slothful attention is on the others, and you burst in with ease. The two of them are covered in nicks and cuts from where they resisted, but now they seem trapped. One has a vine wrapped around her neck, the other has one coiling up her front leg. Both of the vines are being pulled back to Nadel, and more are rising ever moment.

They bark and yelp for your help as they try hold their ground and not be pulled away.

“More Wolf. More Food.”

I will suggest to rethink that - sudden attack on the vines could surprise slow-working Nadel and free our packmates, while (s)he will take time to even notice us and (s)he will have plenty of time to tighten the grip around females when (s)he does that.

You descend on the vines coiled around them and rip them apart in your maw. They crumble and break like dead grass in your mouth The thorns are sharp and prick your mouth when you bite, but they too break. In mere moments, you’ve broken the two of them free of Nadel’s grasp. The two of them jump back as more vines rise up to replace the ones that broke.

“Wolf Fight? Nadel Fight. Night Long. Wolf Tire. Wolf Die. Nadel Feed,” it says as it leans closer to you. Its great eye flicks between the three of you, twitching back and forth as it struggles to focus. It laughs and the firebugs swirl higher into the air.

The vines around you rise up and in unison lash down. The sisters bark in fear, but can’t escape. Coils of vines wrap around both of their midsections, and a loop forms around your neck while you’re distracted with them. Nadel laughs again and you bare your fangs.

IMHO we used Fight for all rolls because we are non-stop against grappling. It has less to do with "dodge" and more with breaking through vines/proceeding forwards. It makes sense to me.
>>
While the two sisters fight the vines with one another, you charge. Nadel is slothful and enduring, he’s clearly prepared to continue this fight for as long as he needs to. When you sprint into the clearing, the vines that were going to entangle you fall short, dropping on the ground where you were. He tries to retract the one around your neck, but you prove too quickly.

Then you see the monster rise up on its own roots to loom over you. It tries to bring its arms around to crush you, but it’s panicking. The layers and layers of vines draped over its twisted body catch on themselves, and pin his arms down. Its eye goes wide open in fear as you leap through the air.

Your maw closes on the lens of his eye and crushes. The thick flesh of its eye splits and tears off as you pull, and thick sap drips out of its eye. You snarl and grab a new bite of its flesh while you dig into its bark with your claws.

Nadel screams as you rip out its eye, spilling sap across yourself and the ground. The firebugs go into a frenzy and you notice some of them spark and die as they swirl. Then you bite again and hit something hard floating in the sap. You pull out lest you break a tooth, but find nothing but the foul taste of sap.

Above you, Nadel is thrashing wildly, swinging its arms back and forth and spreading his vines randomly.

“Kill Wolf. Kill Wolf. Kill Wolf. Kill Wolf. Kill Wolf. Kill Wolf. Kill Wolf. Kill Wolf. Kill Wolf. Kill Wolf.”

You snarl and back off. The vine around your neck withers and falls away as the thrashing grows worse and worse. Finally, his arms reach up and burst apart, untwisting back to their original state. For a moment it seems as if Nadel has perished, but then the dozens of branches bend and turn as new limbs. The vines on the ground around you all pick up and dance around, searching blindly.

But the trees behind you have ceased their imperceptible shifting. You turn and flee, joining the two sisters as they flee through the woods. As you run, you can tell that the woods around you are slowly twisting back to the nightmare-scape it was before, but the path you’re on lasts. It endures just long enough for the three of you to pass out of the forest and to a rocky outcropping on the mountainside.

The pure light of the moons shines down on you undiluted, but you can still see the blue glow around Nadel. But you can feel something else in you as well.

So you made it out of Nadel’s Labyrinth? I’m impressed, although your other friends may need your help. They weren’t quite up to snuff.

>>
>Come on Wolf, there’s a way to the path right this way, Get up there and you can get in here.

The voice leads you through a maze of fallen rocks and gravel strewn slopes, correcting you whenever you err. The two sisters follow behind you quietly, a bit of fear still in them. They know something is going wrong with the rest of the pack. They at least managed to escape Nadel relatively unharmed.

At last you reach a small ledge curving around the cliff. The footing is poor and it is almost too small for your great size. You continue on anyways though, the sisters have little trouble. When the ledge curves around the edge of the cliff, you see that it leads down to the back of the stone construct, and you can see the fires and shadows of humans milling about in it.

You give a hearty howl across the woods, hoping your pack will call back. The sisters join in behind you, but no response comes. You howl again, and hear a different wolf pack far in the distance, but Schatten and the female wolf don’t respond.

>I told them it was dangerous, but I think only the Black one understood. But the point is, helping me now means helping your pack. You want to help your pack don’t you?

You get the feeling you’ll have to kill more humans before this is finished.

>>
>>29615762

It's basically a system where spiritual world hates you by default and even when it doesn't, it just wants to use you to get to the other side of the barrier between physical and spiritual to grow stronger. Even "good" spirits such as spirits of "joy" will more likely make people a stepford smiler that will never, ever leave her abusive spouse because a guy "means so well". Also there are spirits that are unnatural aberrations made by merge of couple of alien to each other spirits, like glass spiders of murder or something. And other than that, there are alien, cthluhu-like horrors alien to both spiritual and physical world. There are also hosts that are both creatures of spirit world and physical, seeking to tear the barrier between two. And other than that, there are other werewolves that hunt you down. Also human hunters. And to top it, you are more likely to hurt everyone you love due to your rage than not.
It's a system in which if you can, you can easily go to stupid level of grimdark...though it's imho very cool nonetheless.

He is pretty classic horror of the woods, I liked his imagery and that you have gone with "nature being evil" theme after threads of struggling against humans. I'd call it a well placed antagonist who also have lots of storytelling potential. I'd like to feed Nadel to gain his favour in eventual struggle against our invisible, manipulative "helper" that will probably backstab us in the future (or is one that kidnapped our friends).

Oh and you can make Nadel easily more deadly if you wish. IMHO 5/5 monster, would roll 1s against.

>>
>>29616443
The only reason you got out was because of the 20 and because I wanted a cliffhanger ending

He can twist the paths of the forest back to himself, rendering non legendary escape impossible.

His attacks deal no damage, merely restricting you. Breaking free of the vines or getting in close enough for him to punch you is the only way he can deal damage. His stats are never quite high enough to kill you outright, but he has so much attrition that he can burn through all of your Exertion with luck before finally wrapping you up, pinning you to his trunk and leaving you there to die of starvation or suicide so he can consume your corpse as nutrition.

It of course gets harder and harder to break free as more vines wrap around you with no upper limit
