You are Fritz Heller, and your past has caught up with you. You fought the alien invaders, the space elves of the Sidarxi Empire, in the 1940s. You were a power armor operator, every the vanguard and ever the rearguard in the desperate battle of Operation Samson. From Stalingrad to Hamburg, you trudged on as the mighty army was whittled down. In the freezing winter of 1944, you escaped the nuclear fires of Hamburg and made your way to America as a renegade.

The year is now 1950. For several years, the aliens have begun the colonization and subjugation of the conquered earth. However, underground workshops and factories have hummed with vigor, producing arms and armors for one last push against the occupying forces of the Sidarxi Empire and the human collaborators of the ISF. In June, the revolution began. As for you, you haven't been idle. You've gotten yourself into a web of intrigue with a Sidarxi conspiracy working against their brethren (though not especially for the good of humanity). Things have just gotten interesting, in the Chinese sense of the word, now that you've stolen an experimental suit of alien power armor. Currently, you are on a trip to New Orleans chasing after a prisoner that might be your Sidarxi one-time handler.
>>
The wind rushes past the canopy as the flyer hurtles through the air. There's a low hum of electronic equipment in the cockpit, under automated control, as it steers the aircraft towards New Orleans. Vetrina sits in the copilot's seat, sprawled out as she naps.

Things are quiet; and you have a greater appreciation for quiet after the last few days. There isn't that much to do beyond watch the instruments. Beneath you, the mud and green landscape of swamps, salt marshes, and fields blurs together into streaks of brown and greenback. You have an itch to do something, anything right now.

You remember Vetrina saying something about a thinking machine in the armor. You suppose that if it can think and recognize your words, it might talk back. You put on the helmet.

“Hello, armor,” you hesitantly say.

“Greetings,” replies that smooth, feminine voice inside the armor.

“What are you?”

“This computer is the Limited Artificial Intelligence which manages the functions of the Model A, Mod 0 experimental power armor. Is this a satisfactory explanation?”

“Is there a more convenient name than what you just said that I can use to address you?”\

“Should you desire, you may address me as 'Sfera.' For such interactions as this, what is your name?”

“Friedrich, but I go by Fritz or Freddy.”

“Greetings, Fritz. I will remember this method of address for the future.”

Oh lawd I finally made it for one of these threads.

“So how were you made?”

“Does Fritz refer to myself as the complete armor assembly or myself as Sfera?”

“Either one... No, tell me about both?”

“As the computer known as Sfera, I was manufactured in a factory, though I am not aware of its location. Until the circuits had an electrical current run through them, I did not think. I would rather not be turned off. ”

There's no inflection beyond the minimum required to speak clearly without monotone diction, but you imagine that the armor or “Sfera” has a Cartesian view of reality.

“As far as the armor's manufacture is concerned, I am only aware of the armor's capabilities. Manufacturing information exists within the armor, but it is located in an inaccessible dumb computer. About what were you informed? I may perhaps be able to inform Fritz.”

You tell it what you know about its capabilities.

“Fritz was not incorrectly informed. I am unable to add the specifics Fritz desires to his working knowledge.”

“Speaking of capabilities, do you have any integrated weapons or some sort of internal offensive device?”

“I do not, though my assumption is that Fritz means beyond enhanced physical capabilities. Is this correct?”

“That's right. How aware of you of the world around me or around you?”

“I am limited to the internal armor diagnostic sensors and the external sensors which are projected into your vision.”

We have kind of been doing a number on it.
>>
“How's the armor been faring?”

“Plate integrity has been compromised in several areas. Other areas exhibit mild cracking and deformation. All motive and electronic systems are functioning. The shields are weaker than they ought to be, which I suppose is a manufacturing defect. Motive and electronic systems are all running. Servicing the unit, while recommended, is not yet necessary.”

That's a bit better than you thought.

“What happens when you are turned off, Sfera?”

The name sounds Russian, now that you've thought about it.

“I no longer think. While it is possible for me to rationalize that I am perfectly safe because power may be restored, I feel that the only thing which separates my existence from that of a dumb computer is my capacity to think. If I cannot think, then I no longer exist?”

“And this is better than going into battle where you can be permanently destroyed?”

“Yes, but that is a logical progression. If I were to be killed, I would die. I would no longer exist. However, neither does my consciousness think when I am turned off. It is irrational that I fear that, but I do.”

Something starts blaring inside the cockpit. Something on the panel is going crazy.

So we have a half broken scaredy cat armor. She doesn't seem to really understand much, which is good. If she gets too much smarter we'll have to start bargaining with her.

Not scaredy-cat per se, just somewhat neurotic in that it doesn't want to be turned off

“What's going on? What does the display say?”

“That is the missile alert. The best course of action would be to take evasive action.”

“Vetrina, I don't know how to fly this thing; but I need you to take evasive maneuvers.”

She snaps out of some sort of daze and grabs at the joystick. It occurs to you that she doesn't really know how to fly the plane either.

You look through a mirror in a cockpit and see the streaking contrail of a missile inevitably tracking towards the flyer.

You are slammed back and into the cargo compartment as she pulls hard on the controls. You can hear the screaming missile as it explodes. Something outside the flyer breaks off with a groan of torn metal.

You run along the groaning and spinning bay towards one of the parachutes you spy on a rack. It's like being a rock inside a washing machine. Just as you reach it, it tumbles out of your reach as the plane jerks you away. You fall across the bay, and your shoulder hits in just the wrong way. It feels like you've dislocated it. You see the cockpit fill with smoke as Vetrina ejects.

Before your vision, you see the bay start to tear itself from the cockpit. You desperately grasp onto whatever handhold you can find, but another revolution flings you out in the sky like a trebuche hurling a rock.

Below you is the mighty brown serpent of the muddy Mississippi River. In the distance is Vetrina parachuting. A supersonic glint streaks through the air, having completed its attack run.

>>
“Sfera, can I dive on an intercept course for Vetrina's parachute?”

If it weren't for the fact that landing would probably turn you into human jelly, the sensation of free-falling is not altogether unpleasant,

“It is possible. Fritz must aggressively shift weight.”

A path lights up in your vision, and you start shifting your weight as you follow the rails of light in your sight. The parachute is distant and beneath you, so you might make it. You come closer and closer. The distance ticks down to hundreds of meters. You're almost there, a few dozen meters. She can see you. You reach out your hands.

You overshoot into the wild blue yonder spiraling down to earth.

The earth approaches faster and faster, descending at terminal velocity. The lights now track a path, an achievable one, into the river. The altimeter, which Sfera has conveniently brought up, is cycling wildly through the numbers.

You tumble and flip so you can land feet first. You don't think that you could survive a belly flop at this speed. In a moment, you pierce the water like spear, sinking to the muck-filled bottom. You didn't check, but you now know that the suit is waterproof.

“How much air do I have to get back up?”

“Fritz has approximately two minutes of oxygen.”

“Scheiße!”

You had better swim quickly.
