As perfect Men. Basically they have their own lives and World and City, their own governments and councils, their own philosophies and ways, their own nearly magical high technology [as you'd expect a civilization that for aeons has only known one major conflict, and that a continuing one].

SO basically a combination of Tolkien Elves and Kryptonians. So YHWH is the Big Good [for once]. No edgy and no hallmark squishiness. Just a giant bearded badass whose actually just an avatar for a boundless spirit being.

I had a setting once with LG and CG paladin varieties, and they staffed the afterlife bureaucracy that handled mortal paladins. LG paladins could pray for more smite uses and specially equipped mounts and the like. CG paladins had a chance to not use smite uses (because all the loose cannons in their side of the paladiny bureaucracy lost the paperwork) and also to get slightly nicer mounts that were actually CG paladins shapeshifted and sneaking away from their posts to do more hands on work.

In one setting, they're the standardized workforce of all deities. As in all Angels are crafted by a neutral smith god and delivered to other gods to act as warrior-servants. Demons are angels that serve evil deities, though appearancewise they're almost exactly the same, extremely shiny, sword-overdosing, abstract humanoids.

In another setting, the only angel that appeared before the party was basically pic related, but more Neutral Good.

Angels are very much like the sun.
They are Light, they are Power.
And like the sun, they come in different variations.

i'd say there's plenty of room for both in the same setting. either because eldritch angels sometimes take the form of humans (which is what happens in the bible) or because angels are divided into different ranks, some of which are eldritch and some of which appear as something similar to human (which is supported by traditional christian thought).

there's tons of shit you can crib for worldbuilding purposes.

You're gonna love this one: Kerubie, The Flames Which Dance Around The Throne Of God

"Kerubiel is about seven Heavens tall with a body made of burning coals that is covered with thousands of eyes. His face is made of fire, his eyes sparks of light, and his lashes are lightning bolts. Fire spews forth with every word that he speaks and he is covered with wings from head to toe. Thunder, lightning, and earthquakes are his constant companions and the splendor of the Shekinah shines upon him"l

The "angels" of The Secret World are a bunch of servants that left their master; The Host, a being that bops around making dimensions and leaving them to rot because He is a dick.

There aren't enough of them to save the world and they can't call on higher power, so they guide who they can and ready themselves to die fighting when the multiple apocalypses one day prove too much for humanity.

Or maybe they were just creative or specifically used symbolic language to convey theological concepts. Ezekiel, where we get most of our weirdest CANONICAL descriptions of angels is a prototypical apocalypse, and apocalyptic literature by definition uses coded language.

This is true, though insults get tossed around almost by default.

how plausible do you think it is that they a) had access to and b) used psychoactive drugs?
You could very well argue that they used purposely colourful language, i just enjoy thinking about the likelihood that psychedelic influence coloured the already colourful minds of religious authors.

Of course, apocalyptic literature is fundamentally resistance literature.

I've heard theories that Moses' encounter with God on Sinai was influence by psychotropic mushrooms, but I find that a bit silly considering there's no historical or archaeological evidence for the book of Exodus in the first place so why do we have to justify that one part of it.

But I see what you mean, psychoactive substances very well could've influenced those writings, but for the people who take them seriously as divinely-inspired scripture, the point is moot, they are what they are.

Different levels of angel being different.

All demon's are fallen angels.

Lowest level angels are actually just elves, not even holy enough to live in Heaven. The demon form of them is Orcs.

Next up is just dudes with superpowers basically, they become traditional demons

Then the powers progressively get stronger and the angels progressively lose their personality as you climb the ranks. Same with Demons, less focused on fucking over humanity and more focused on fucking over other demons or gaining power or what-have-you.

Midway up is Diablo style angels which are real fuckin' powerful and don't give a fuck about humanity for the most part, doing the will of God. These ones become like the big-kahuna's of Hell. Guys like Beelzebub, Lucifer, etc

Then up high you get angels which are basically autonoma, ridiculously powerful but only do what they're specifically designed. These ones become like the massive fucking force of nature tornado made of lava demons, just charging around fucking shit up indiscriminately.

Finally you get the really fucking weird ones in the highest levels, the ones made of pure energy or the fucking wheel dudes or the balls of a million wings, those sword of guys. The demon forms of these guys are like Cthulhu level guys.

Imagine a race that can't do anything but be a bureaucrat or liaison. Then imagine that race with the strength of a hundred men, the ability to fly, and heal all but the most grievous injuries. In other words I play them as dour souls with a bit of a chip on their shoulder, as they cannot actually use all of these great powers in a very direct fashion. They very much evoke a sense of wasted potential, and I play that trope all the time, that angels are actually an early alpha version of humans.

I'm personally a fan of the eldritch abomination angels where they have forms so inconceivable that if a mortal looked directly at it they would have their eyes burned out so they have to take a different form when interacting with mortals to avoid that.

I also like the idea of God being a title held by the strongest or wisest angel rather than a single being the entire time. That's why old testament God was batshit insane in comparison to the new testament one. He earned the title of God because he was the greatest creator amongst the angels but creation took a toll on his mind. One of his angels had to slay him and take the mantle of God after all the other angels saw that it would only be a matter of time before he does something irreversibly destructive.

That sounds like a fun premise for a game doesn't it? Have it set in the transition period between the old and new testament.Your party is a band of angels that have been tasked with defeating God and installing the angel that will become new testament God in his place. Though he may be going insane he is still a powerful creator angel so you will need all the help you can get. You will have to go through the many districts of heaven, hell, and even earth to gather the strength that you will need to bring him down. Mythical heroes, villains, and minor gods from many different countries exist in this setting.
>>
>>29594383

Let me tell you, the last campaign I ran with an angelic/demonic bent? The PCs uncovered that little tidbit about angels being incomplete humans and devised a way to make them more complete than they were. They ran afoul of God, Lucifer, the angels, the demons, and it ended in a TPK that probably killed the world along with it.

Considering that after the resurection of the dead and the day of judgement mankind will become something even greater than angels (Jesus' own words) it stands to reason the more human looking an Angel the more glorious it is. After all Man is made in God's image, not the angels and God dwelt on earth as a man.

A lack of perspective leads us to assume that Angels are great and terrible creatures when the reverse is more likely and we are unaccountably magnificent to the spirits.

I was referring specifically to traditional Catholic angelic hierarchy. The lowest in the hierarchy were the angels and archangels, who looked like men with wings. The higher ranking angels took on stranger forms (wheel within wheel, six wings, four heads, etc)

Though until the day of judgement, humanity's place is still "a little lower than the angels" (psalm 8:5). A spirit's perspective on Man, that would be interesting.

It's funny, I am by far the most 'le edgy fedora tipper XD' of the people I know and yet I always make my angels as good as possible, and God as well.

In my setting, God is actually real. He exemplifies light, truth, justice, etc. He doesn't hate gays and forgives people, he doesn't damn people to hell (everyone who dies just 'passes on' unless they become a ghost, nobody knows what happens after) and all of his angels are similar.

The angels are just humans who fought/believed strongly in god and serve him in death, until they are ready to pass on. They generally can only take the form of animals or objects. So a young child gets lost in the woods? Suddenly a pure white dove will appear and guide him out. That's an angel, and an act of God, a minor one at that.

Around churches/people who believe more, Angels can appear as actual winged humans with flaming swords and all that jazz. They are extremely strong.

The only edgy thing about it all is that God is a thoughtform created from years upon years upon millions upon millions of people who believed him in. The cosmology is based heavily on Unknown Armies and as such Humans are the driving force of creation, not God or gods. He is still however a powerful and good being with the best intentions that will never let evil triumph over good if he can help it.

It's credited to the Apostle John, but it's also thought to have been written around AD 100, so that John would've been really unfeasibly old at the time if that was true.

A lot of apocalypse narratives have famous historical names tacked on to lend more credibility to them, even if they were written by different people. There's some attributed to Isaiah, Abraham, numerous ones for Paul and Peter, and so on.

Then after the new God installed have a time skip where the party takes place in the final battle that seems to happen in most religions. The God that the party installed is assassinated and all hell breaks loose in the resulting power struggle amongst all the angels. Many of the angels were tired of holding back their powers for the sake of humanity maturing and seek to become God to do away with the bureaucratic system and bring back the mythic age while others support letting the humans do as they please and advance on their own. Some are simply tired of the world in general and would like to wipe it out and start over.

You can team up with legendary gods and heroes from around the world in an attempt to bring about the ideal reality. Will you fight bring back the mythical days of old, preserve humanity, or perhaps something else?

Doubtful. Revelations was very likely written before 67 AD. Jews at the time had a habit of writing about current events and the Roman war against the Jews that happened then made no appearance.

It's great, but the CW has kept it alive far long than it should, and I stopped watching about about season 5.

I would start watching through it if you've got time to pick up a new show, but don't feel pressured to power through EVERY episode. When it's good, it's REALLY good, but when it's bad, it's crap.

Revelation (no 's' at the end, man) wasn't the only apocalypse narrative written in the early Christian church, and there are several extant ones we have that were written specifically for Jewish audiences that appeared around the time of the Jewish diaspora when the community was traumatized and a work of apocalyptic literature like that to reassure the faithful of God's plan for them would naturally come about.

I've always heard it dated to 100AD though, that's interesting that he puts it earlier.

I thought that Archangels circumvented the hiearchy, and were at the top?
>>
>>29595599

Pardon?
>>
>>29595646

Archangels are specifically venerated on the same level as saints (Michael, Gabriel and Raphael), so they get special status. They still acted as messengers and guides to humans on earth, which sets them apart from angels who are constantly in the presence of God's glory in heaven.
>>
>>29595708
So they were basically just glorified errand boys?

Catholicism has the benefit of being absolutely clear on almost all of their theology and related subjects and being consistent over time. When it comes to angels and demons, it seems wise to default to Catholic understanding on the matter.

>>29595646
Depends on who you talk to. Wheel-within-wheel-with-eyes or flaming swords and wings; either way, I'm gonna need a fresh pair of skibbies if I see one.
>>
>>29595723

Actually I was mistaken "archangels" can include other hierarchies of angels. Quoting here:

>"Archangels are generally taken to mean "chief or leading angel" ( Jude 9; 1 Thes 4:16), they are the most frequently mentioned throughout the Bible. They may be of this or other hierarchies as St. Michael Archangel, who is a princely Seraph."

Raphael is also apparently hot shit, as he describes himself in Tobit:

> "I am the Angel Raphael, one of the seven who stand before the throne of God." (Tb 12:15)

One of my favorite bits in Good Omens is the one corrected bit from Aziraphale.
Don't remember the exact bit but it's like
>And then the Lord God walked out of eden to look upon the earth
>And then he turned to the Cherubim that he had set to guard there with a flaming sword that turned every which way
>And said unto him "...Where is the flaming sword that was given unto thee?"
>And the angel spoke saying "Er... well... you see... Uh..."
>"They just looked really cold, see, and it's not like it's a temperate zone, and they're wearing fig leaves, so, uh..."
>>

"DO NOT BE AFRA-- Again, really? Raph, why the hell do these meatsacks' eyes keep melting out of their skulls every time we want to tell them something important?"
>>

Which is why most of the time they appear in human form when talking with humans.

Unless you're on an apocalyptic acid trip like John or Ezekiel, because those tend to involve the fragile curtains of reality as we perceive it to be drawn back to reveal cosmic truths. ("Apocalypse" is a Greek word that itself means "unveiling")
>>

"We went through five Adams before we figured that one out."
>>

>("Apocalypse" is a Greek word that itself means "unveiling")

No it isn't.

It means "spend all of your money on giant plastic and resin toys you'll only use once a year, if that." A Games Workshop employee told me that.

Man, the general design here is one of the best takes I've seen on the cherub description, but the dark coloration doesn't really do it for me. If there were a shinier version I would be all over that.
>>
>>29595581
The 95 AD date is mainly based on testimony of writers from around that time, claiming to report the words of witnesses who personally knew John.

And at any rate, it isn't entirely out of the question. Estimates of his birth peg him at somewhere around 10 AD, give or take 5 years or so. With Revelation believed to have been written somewhere around 95 AD, that would put John somewhere in his 80s at the time -- an impressive age to be sure, but not totally implausible.

I like my angels as incomprehensible monstrosities, raw concentrations of divine power in seemingly impossible configurations. Wheels within wheels, purple fireballs covered in eyes, four-faced yet single-headed Thrones enshrined in the glory of their gods, terrible to look upon, blinding to the weak of soul, and always, always beyond mankind's comprehension. They can take human form and seem normal enough, but in their true form they never speak clearly if at all. Everything is portents and proverbs and prophecies, and their sense of time is nonlinear.

They should be horrible forces of nature that mortals only conceptualize as mythic imagery. If an angel comes to fuck your shit up, your shit will be fucked up.
>>
>>29594396
It's not that he never existed, it's that the Biblical Jesus was probably several people.
>>
I prefer my angels without normal human faces. Ideally faceless in some manner -- either lacking a face entirely, or just having their face covered/obscured -- but having very nonhuman faces (or, as is the case with cherubim, one human face along with several nonhuman) is acceptable too.
But for some reason, having a perfectly normal human face just ruins it for me.

This is why Zendikar angels are pretty much my favorite among MtG angels -- they cover their faces (albeit partially) with their halos.

I am asking what NTR is he imagining from me posting belldandy as an example angel?

Does he think I want her specifically and to NTR her boyfriend K1?
Does he refer to the fact that 99% of porn featuring her is vile NTR because she is such a pure character who would never ever do that?

I am trying to figure out what he is trying to say in those 2 word posts of his.

Think again!

A circle of doujin has been going on for pretty much as long as the manga and it's canon in my mind
>>
>>29598522
I am looking at TV tropes and the closest I can see is
>In chapter 285 Hild drops a bombshell on Keiichi. When he first made the contract with Belldandy, Heaven altered his mind to suppress his desire towards Belldandy. This was done to maintain the separation between gods and men in the face of a contract that bound a goddess to a mortal. And both Belldandy and Urd knew this all along. Its implied that just about every goddess except for Skuld has been aware of this mental manipulation from day one.
>>
>>29598664
There's also the fact that Belldandy loves everyone and therefore, by virtue of the fact that you generally want to sleep with the one you love, is a colossal slut.

That's the /a/ logic at least.
>>
>>29593139
Ah hell yeah. One of my favourite antagonists from the show.

"In heaven I have FOUR heads, one of which is a LION."
>>
>>29595523
I will say, the arc of the first two Seasons, and then from there until the end of the first five Seasons, is actually really strong and does a lot of cool things. As long as you're not too critical of things you'll probably enjoy it.
>>
My Angels basically feed on virtue, soaking it up and basking in it. Acts of virtue give them strength to continue the endless bitter war against the devils, who feed off of sin.

Angels will either be invisible, muttering in people's ears which subtly and gently modifies their behavior to be a little more virtuous, or they'll appear incorporeally to select people if they want to make a point. Doing so attracts Devils for an incorporeal slap fight and brings the fight to the Mortal Plane, which is generally bad. Anomalies in reality start happening. However, these are basically projections, and hurting an Angel in this reality doesn't matter too much as they'll just wake up back in Heaven, slightly weaker, and go back to whatever they were doing.

Angels (and Devils) can enter the mortal plane for reals, but doing so causes massive damage, rips all sorts of holes, and means they can be permanently and totally killed forever.

Most Angels are legitmately good, and while they farm humans for virtue they legitimately care about people and their struggles and some Angels will take a vested interest in a specific mortal, trying to make their lives better.

Then again, Devils like to do the same thing in reverse...

lied about what? stop cockteasing me, I spent 30 minutes searching and couldn't find shit.

Also, I know she is called a goddess but her functionality is effectively being an angel. Especially considering "kami sama" is God with capital G and "hild sama" is Satan.
>>
I like angels to be fapbait/schlickbait for humanity, super attractive, virtuous beings that humanity can't have.
>>
>>29599568
Well, she never actually LIED. She just neglected to tell Keichi that he was being mindcontrolled to be the BETA MAXIMUS everyone loved to hate and never, ever threaten her divine purity. Everyone knew about it and Belldandy just kept silent because she was perfectly happy being treated like a princess by her divinely neutered manservant.

It's not even an asspull, there's foreshadowing as long as two hundred chapters back. /a/ was less pleased when they learnt that the Beta that started that trend of infuriatingly passive MCs was actually a twenty-years old lie.
