You are Flying officer Julian Reber, a Swiss national who joined the Royal Air Force, partly so he could pretend he's a mercenary, but mostly so he would have a chance to fight the BETA, an unstoppable alien menace that has swarmed over the Eurasian continent over the last quarter of a century. If they remain unopposed, human civilization on Earth will be extinguished.

You've spent the last week or so fighting Russian black ops team, sinking a submarine that had destroyed a British task force and gunning down four Balalaikas to rescue one of MI5's top assets.

The time as now come for you to head to the front lines at Dover base and join the fight to retake Europe.

>(cont.)
>>
>>29563068
The truck drive to Dover was long and boring, but it gave you time to review your orders in more detail. For some reason, the European Union is beginning an extremely aggressive push to retake the continent. Many of the most experienced officers have been rotated out of the front lines and into the academies as instructors.

Their replacements - you and others like you - are promising young men and women whose potential should bloom on the battlefield, if they survive. They will receive unprecedented financial and materiel support considering their size and they will be tasked with spearheading the development of the Tactical Surface Fighter weapons platform by testing new technologies in the field.

That is Project Round Table. At its current force, it counts five full squadrons of 14 TSFs, known collectively as the Number 25 Group RAF Camelot, plus all the support personnel necessary. The RAF plans to expand the size of the group as quickly as possible to encourage other European nations to join the Round Table. The Federal Republic of Germany's 44th battalion has agreed to provide some support to the project as long as their standard operations are not disrupted and other European nations are currently negotiating commitments with the British government.

As you grab your luggage and exit the truck, you see a tall, rugged-looking man in a Group captain's uniform waiting for you. He's accompanied by a young Pilot officer.

"Flying officer Julian Reber," he says. "Welcome to the Round Table. I'm Group captain Richard Hall." He turns to the Pilot officer next to him. "This is Pilot officer Vivian Knight. She'll be the command and control officer for your flight and she'll give you a tour of the base once you're done here.
The Pilot officer gives you a swift salute, which you return.

The Group captain looks through his documents.

"Let's see... You're assigned to Arthur squadron, which is under my direct command. Your position is..."

He puts the documents back in their folder and looks at you straight in the eyes.

"Operation, sir?"

Hall's gaze shifts away for a second and he nods slowly.

"Yeah," he says. "The EU wants evaluate Camelot's combat effectiveness and its ability to cooperate with the Cerberus battalion. They ordered a thinning operation in Calais."

There's a too-long pause and the Group captain's face contorts into a grimace.

"But that's just bullshit the brass squeezed out of their asses. There are 50,000 BETA in Calais and the EU wants them gone so we can establish a beachhead on the continent. Gawain, Lancelot and Bedivere squadrons will assist Cerberus in dealing with the main force. Arthur squadron will be on laserjagd. Well, the Royal Navy promised full artillery and support despite the loss of the Ark Royal, so with a hundred TSFs, we should be able to manage."

You try not to imagine the sheer horror of what you have just heard, and fail. It takes all your willpower to keep you from breaking down in tears and vomiting all over your new commanding officer, but a lifetime going up with the British has taught you how to remain completely unflappable in the face of just about anything.

"One more thing," Hall says as he moves closer to you and lowers his voice. "I heard about your 'patrol incident' over at Liverpool. I wanted to personally thank you for what you did for Dodger. He's... not right, after what the Soviets took from him, but he's one of our best engineers and computer programmers. You should go see him, when you have time. I think you'd have a lot to discuss."

>(cont.)
>>
>>29563974
Hall takes his leave, but doesn't comment when you don't salute him as you should. Pilot officer Vivian Knight smoothly steps in front of you and tries to smile.

"Pilot officer Reber," she says. "As the Group captain said, I'm Pilot officer Vivian Knight. I'm assigned to the command centre and I'll be responsible for updating your flight on any changes in tactics or strategy during combat, as well as coordinating with other flights and squadrons. My callsign is Arthur Crown."

She pauses for a moment to let you nod some form of acknowledgement. You vaguely notice that her accent is American, not British.

"I've also been asked to show you around the base. I can show you to the hangar, the command centre and your quarters. Where would you like to go first?"

>Go to your quarters. You might as well drop off your luggage.

You sling your bag over your shoulder and decide that it's not that heavy, and that you really like living.

"Hangar first, please," you say. "I want to see what the facilities are like."

"Yes, sir."

Knight leads you to the base's massive hangars. They're quite easy to find, seeing as how they're right next to the massive runaways.

The hangars are obviously still under construction, but most of the important parts are bolted down. More surprisingly, they're incredibly well-organized. Inventory lists and repair queues are posted on large blackboards and all the tools a mechanic might need are set out and organized in plain view so nobody needs to run around looking for them. It looks like all the work crews are neatly organized by flight and a few backup mechanics wait in the back in case a TSF needs extra hands.

As you enter, a Flight lieutenant approaches and you reflexively salute. She only looks a little older than you.

"Hello, I'm Flight lieutenant Mary Wright. You must be Flying officer Reber, yes? I'm sure you've heard this before, but welcome to the Round Table. I don't have much time to spare, but is there anything I can help you with?"

"First off, good afternoon. Second, do you have any ideas as to how I can laser-proof a Tornado so I can say good afternoon to you tomorrow to you again a few more times?"

She winces visibly.

"Ah, yes, you're Storm Vanguard for Arthur squadron. Your TSF as at the back. We've just finished getting it back up to standards."

It's quite impressive that she remembers all that off the top of her head.

"Unfortunately, I don't allow any unscheduled work in my shops, especially during peak periods, which is right before a major operation. Fortunately, I should have a work crew to spare in for hours, if you can drop by them. I'll be more than happy to assist you in any modifications you would like to make."

"Really? All the maintenance crews I've met so far got pissed every time I tweaked one of my TSFs' software just a little."

Mary gives you a knowing smile.

"Normally, that's the case," she says. "However, one of Project Round Table's goals is to see how far we can push the TSF platform. I'm more than happy to modify TSFs, so long as proper records I kept. I'm sure you don't want to end up in a Blast Guard machine by accident. Now then, if you'll excuse me."

You salute as she takes her leave and Knight turns to you.

"Command centre, I think. I'll finish the tour off with my quarters."

"Yes, sir."

Knight leads you to the command centre, which is at the rear of the base to protect it from BETA attack. It's a surprisingly small building all things considering. It doesn't hold much else other than the control room.

"This is the control room," Knight says as you enter.

The room is divided in three tiers. The highest tier is a large station that overlooks the entire room. Slightly below that are ten smaller substations. Below those stations are three desks. The back of the room has a large project map that projects satellite data of the area surrounding Dover. It can presumably be used to oversee any battlefield.

"If we had a General on staff, he would be sitting at the main station." She points to the largest station, the one that overlooks the rest of the room. "Individual squadrons have their own substations and flights within each squadron have a sub-substation of their own. We're hoping this architecture allows us to keep better track of the battlefield on both the tactical and strategic levels."

All of the desks are covered with computers and computer screens. You can't really tell the details, but they look more advanced than any equipment you've seen so far in other bases.

It would also help in a more meta sense to know what level of knowledge we have about the enemy we're facing.

Effective ranges, rate of fire, do we know that Laser-class will not fire if they run a risk of hitting other BETA, etc.

Or should we just assume that, in character, we are in possession of any non-specialized knowledge that we as players have access to? (i.e. we wouldn't know anything about the origins of the BETA or the existence of Carrier-class or the like, but anything about basic combat capabilities and strategy are fair game.)

>>29565158
>"If we had a General on staff, he would be sitting at the main station."
Does having no ranking officer in charge of the whole operation mean there isn't any sort of inter-squadron liaison, or is this just handled by the operations officers of each squadron on a case-by-case basis?
>>
>>29565158
"Can you tell me more about the upcoming operation?"

"I don't have the final plan yet, but I should have most of it. Please, follow me."

She leads you down to her work station and brings up a satellite view of Calais as you watch over her shoulder.

It's a standard mass of BETA. The Destroyers, Tanks, Grapplers and Forts are near the beach and the Lasers are farther in land. That might work to your advantage - the Destroyers won't be able to get enough momentum to charge incoming TSFs and low-flying missiles should be able to avoid lasers and slam right into the BETA.

None of which makes your life easier.

"The plan is Gawain, Lancelot, Bedivere and Arthur squadrons to push in a spearhead formation while Cerberus holds the beach. As you push through the mass of BETA, Gawain and Lancelot will turn left and right to split the BETA formation in half and flank them. Bedivere will lead you through the BETA formation, then stay back as you head towards the Laser-classes. They'll cover your back or support Gawain and Lancelot as necessary. Naval artillery will fire artillery to distract the Lasers. Aside from that, I'm afraid we'll have to come up with something in during the fight. I promise to support you to the best of my abilities. Once the operation is done, Tristan and Galahad squadrons will be deployed to secure the beachhead while you fall back."

You nod slowly. Aside from the part where you'll have to invent tactics on the fly while being shot at by lasers, it's not a bad plan.

"So, how long have you been in the military?"

She hesitates for a moment.

"I... I joined the RAF a few weeks ago. I was in another service for three months before that. Come, I'll show you to your room."

She stands and leads you away before you can ask more.

Knight leads you towards the barracks, which are a much larger building. Officers' quarters are on the higher floors and get a somewhat nicer view. You reach your room and open the door. As it turns out, your roommate is waiting for you.

It also turns out that your roommate is a woman. And lounging around in her underwear.

Next to you, Knight looks like she's desperately embarrassed.

Your presumed roommate just shifts here eyes to look at you.

"Sorry, I'll give you some time to get dressed."

You swiftly close the door. It opens again less than a minute later and your new roommate is standing in front of you, still in her underwear.

"You're Julian Reber, right?"

You can't tell if she's annoyed, angry or exasperated, but you don't want to piss her off even more.

"That's right," you say as you offer to shake her hand.

Her grip is strong, but she's not trying to crush your hand and she relaxes somewhat visibly and waves you in.

"Just come in," she says. "I'm Flying officer Elaine Robinson, your new element lead in Arthur squadron."

"Oh, so you're the other half of Storm Vanguard. Pleasure to meet you then."

Next to you, Knight tries to stammer something out.

"But, Your-"

Robinson turns immediately at GLARES at Knight like she's about to punch her in the throat six or seven times.

"Were you saying something, Pilot officer," she asks.

"No, ma'am!"

Knight gives a salute and leaves as quickly as she can while retaining her dignity.

Robinson just sighs and goes back to lounging on her bed while you drop your luggage off.

"Not really," she says. "Why? Are you tired to seeing tits?"

"Well, yes, actually."

Robinson stops flipping through her book and turns to look at you.

"I used to change and shower with women towards the end of my training," you say. "It was exciting for all of two days, then it just got really boring for everyone involved. The mystique just wasn't there any more, you know?"

That at least gets her to laugh a bit and she sets her book aside.

"All right, I'll let you keep your dignity during off-hours. Just don't complain if I give you a show if I need to get changed during an emergency. There's not much I can do about that."

"Yeah, we figured that out real fast, too."

Robinson starts putting on her gym uniform while you hang your own uniforms in the closet.

"So, what's with you and Knight," you ask.

"I like Knight," Robinson says. "She just keeps bringing up things that aren't her - or your - business. It's not a problem in a fight."

"All right, I'll hold you to that."

Gunnery.

I'd get gunnery over melee, then melee.

Swords are cool but you should not use them more than guns unless you are out of ammo or really want to die.
>>
>>29567044
NPCs start with no skills and learn them through interactions with the players. For the most part, it just means they roll 1d20+Resource. instead of 1d20+Skill+Resource. We're currently Level 2, so the modifier for any Skill is only +2 right now.

It's something of an experiment and I don't want to explain it too much in case I spoil it.

>Elaine Robinson has unlocked TSF Piloting.

By the time you're done sorting out your luggage, it's time to head down to the hangars and see what you can do to enhance your chances of surviving the laser hunt tomorrow. Elaine sees you off and promises to drop by the hangar herself with dinner if you need to skip.

As promised, Mary is waiting for you with a free tech crew and all the equipment you need to perform a quick overhaul on a TSF.

"Now then, Flying officer," she says. "What kind of modifications do you want to try?"

>Focus on your TSF and squeeze as much performance as you can out of it. Speed, agility, guns, halberds - everything.
>Modify the whole squadron. You're sure Vivian could work a lot better with a more detailed tactical network.
>Modify the whole squadron. Coordinated targeting systems could enhance everyone's gunning skills.
>Modify the whole squadron. Link the melee combat and manoeuvring systems to get more force behind each swing.
>Modify the whole squadron. Drop the safeties to enhance agility across the board. If you do it right, it won't affect anyone's piloting.

>Modify the whole squadron. Coordinated targeting systems could enhance everyone's gunning skills.
A company-wide modification is probably best, given that we're not on a solo mission, and thus having our machine be souped up more than our allies' just means that we would end up separated from them more often, or have to limit our use of those upgrades in order to keep in line with them.

Everyone uses guns, after all, so better targeting is probably the most useful thing we can do with the lowest possible negative impact.

Modifying the TSF's movement without time for people to get accustomed to it is really, really dangerous, unless we're REALLY sure it's something that won't throw people off.

>This was a tie when I started writing it, so I went with full tweaking of the safeties and partial modifications to the tacnet. Leaving the rest to the Dice Gods.

>>29567535

"First things first, can we lower the safeties on the whole Arthur squadron and will everyone crash and explode if we do?"

"Not a problem," Wright says. "Tweaking for agility is a fairly common modification. The pilots should be able to handle it."

"All right, while you're working on that, I'd like to take a look at the tactical network."

Wright begins organizing her team to enhance Arthur squadron's manoeuvrability and one of her technicians brings you to a computer station with a dummy copy of the squadron's tactical network. Just the kind of thing you need if you want to work the bugs out of the system before heading to the fight.

You pay special attention to the enhanced infrared sensors that you are taking to a fight against hot, Laser-class BETA.

You think about programming your sensors to track the heat signatures of Laser-class BETA as they're heating and cooling, which would make it a hell of a lot easier to figure out when it's safe to drop out of cover and shoot them in the face. Unfortunately, this isn't the kind of thing you can program on short notice. You decide to shelve that plan for later and help out with modifications to the safeties.

The crew's done it plenty of times and it shows. The modifications are flawless and while Arthur squadron will require additional maintenance after the battle, that's a hell of a lot better than having to deal with a wrecked machine.

As promised, Robinson drops by with fish and chips. As far as fish and chips goes, it's surprisingly not greasy. You both give your Tornadoes a quick spin and they check out fine. The rest of your squadron will have to try their own machines tomorrow in case something unexpectedly went wrong, but for now, your work is done.

Robinson and you go back to your room and take turns in the shower. You crash on your beds and stare at the ceiling.

"Hey, Robinson," you call out to your roommate.

"Yeah?"

"We're getting a piece of Europe back tomorrow."

"Damn right."

You close your eyes and think of the pictures of Switzerland your parents showed you while you were growing up. You don't really remember the pictures anymore - they're more memories of memories - but that just makes them more vivid in your imagination. You remember the stories of your ancestors, who sold their skills for money on the battlefield. It's one thing for a mercenary to fight, it's another for a mercenary to fight a battle that can be won. If you're stuck with a contract, you'd rather it be a contract that doesn't send you to an early grave.

"I was born to end this fight," you say. You don't care how goddamn stupid it sounds, right here, right now, it's God's honest truth.

"Good for you," Robinson said. "I failed at everything I was born to do. That's why I won't fail as a pilot."

Her voice is a mix of envy, regret and determination, but you know that tomorrow, she won't fail you.

You fall asleep, and dream of the Hell you're about to fall into.

Julian Swiss nationalism is more a mix of thrillseeking and boyhood fantasies. He likes to remind himself that what he's doing is technically illegal, even though nobody really cares. It's like YAMATO DAMASHII, except he has enough sense not to overthrow the Swiss government and force them to make mercenary work constitutional again because of tradition.

For the most part, he just wants to get Europe back because his contract is a dead end if he can't.
