You spend the days at the Ranger outpost training and learning the ways of the Rangers of the Feywood. Despite your past history, they seem to be accepting of your stay, perhaps out of guilt for your predicament. At any rate, you can't say your time there is unproductive. As the weather begins to warm slightly, the snow falls less often. You can see the beginnings of buds on some of the plants around the outpost.

After all your practice and training, you have the basics of the Rangers' twin fighting style down. You also manage to find time to study with Helda, who teaches you a few of her own tricks.

You learn the spell 'Shock', enabling you to run electricity through a foes body, so long as both hands make contact with them.

A) Learn the spell 'Flare'

You have learned the spell 'Float'. You are able to hover relatively light objects one foot off of the ground. These objects are set in place and cannot change position via their own locomotion. You can move the objects slowly on a 2D plane, or set them down. You must make visual contact with the object and have both hands available to sustain the spell.

On a cold morning, you practice in the yard with two steel axes, chopping dummies into several large chunks. As you sweep up the stuffing and set up another dummy, Helda and Ms Springer approach from outside the wooden fence. You turn to greet them, and they inform you that the Black Beret has been spotted nearby, and that the officers are getting dressed to meet him. They ask if you'd like to primp before he arrives. Helda seems overly eager to hear you say yes.

How does that have any value fighting lycans that regenerate anything short of complete disintegration or maybe decapitation? It will stop them a bit, but your intention was to fly and shoot arrows (which also doesn't seem valuable against these fellows unless the way to kill them is some material or poison, like silver.)
The combat value of it is much smaller than say, lighting things on fire or being able to dual wield axes.

You decide that a man as known for his ability to slay beasts shouldn't put too much stock in perfumes and powders. To Helda's disappointment, you elect to meet the Black Beret as you currently are, and head to the headmaster's office to wait. It is an hour before you hear noise outside the office, signaling the arrival of your anticipated ally. You stand between Helda and more rangers, as the large door opens up. In steps three men, two in normal ranger attire, and the third, walking between them, dress in a black cloak and black leather, complete with an actual black beret. You notice as he walks by, that the back of his cloak has an insignia, but his hood cover it and makes it difficult to make out. He approaches the desk and bows his head slightly, then removes his hat. Able to get a better look at him now, you see that he appears to be a relatively young man with sleek brown hair and green eyes. You clearly see some of the female rangers in the room become fixated on his face when he smiles. After a short briefing from the headmaster on the situation, he and the black beret approach you. The headmaster introduces you as a "skilled young hunter who fought the lycans 6 to 1 and survived". The black beret smiles, honestly making your heart flutter a bit, and extends his hand.

"Pleased to meet you, sir. I am Daniel of Sweetwater, Black Beret ranked 4th among the zodiac. I'm honored to be working with someone so clearly talented."

It may not have been the intention behind my vote, but surely you recognize the value of immobilising them for a short time? Say, perhaps, long enough for a decapitation? It's not direct damage, but it has a great deal of value.
It certainly makes more sense that another fire spell, considering they've already been shown to be fireproof.

You grasp his hand and shake, politely giving your name. He claps you on the shoulder and continues smiling before he turns away to speak to the headmaster. The proposed plan is to send a small party to engage the lycans, giving Daniel a chance to observe them and think of a plan. The party in question is not intended to slay the lycans per se, only to gather combat information. Daniel turns to you and invites you to join the team, as he'd like to see your ferocity as well.

You agree to join the mission, and are lead by Daniel and the headmaster out of the room and down to the ground floor. You come to the yard, where rows upon rows of rangers are lined up shoulder to shoulder, standing at attention. The headmaster gives Daniel his pick of the litter, so to speak, to accomplish the mission. Daniel eyeballs them one at a time, for a few seconds each. None of them so much as blink when he looks at them. You do notice that many of the women blush deeply, despite their stalwart expressions, as do a handful of the men. Eventually he picks out 2 men and a woman, all of no real significance in your eyes. They follow Daniel back to you. Daniel asks you to make sure you're ready to depart, recommending that you outfit yourself properly before going.

You strap on some simple leather armor. It doesn't feel very tough, but you are able to move freely, and the rangers assure you that it'll do its job when the time comes. You also grab your bow, 10 arrows, and a pair of matching axes that you strap to your lower back as the rangers do. Together with Daniel and the party, you set off toward the last known location of the lycan camp. The front team is kept in contact with another group staying behind, in case your tether needs to be corrected. Two miles is a good distance, but just in case a group is prepared to move Helda if need be.

You eventually come to a small, bloody and messy clearing. There are signs of the lycans about, from bones to tufts of body hair and the pure stink of them. There is still a beaten up tent nearby, though it's slightly collapsed. After checking the entire camp for any more information, Daniel asks what you think.

Daniel nods in agreement, and tells the other rangers to be on the lookout for any signs of approaching enemies. You spread out and start searching for any trails or hints as to where they might have gone, but find little to go on. Despite their wild behavior, they seem at least adept at hunting.

A short while later, one of the rangers reports spotting something approaching from the west. It will be at the camp shortly. Daniel suggests hiding and springing a trap for the lycans.

You and the party climb into the highest and most inconspicuous trees available. It isn't easy, and you're not entirely sure the cover will work, but you think the ability to escape should they find you is more valuable than perfect camouflage. Sure enough, a few minutes pass and 6 large, hairy men approach the camp. They drag behind them two large deer, with bellies and throats sliced open and spilling all over the forest floor. They laugh and jab at each other, then set to work skinning and cutting up the first deer. You'd normally assume they would save the second one for later, but as the first one cooks, they merely begin tearing away at the other one raw. You've seen animals feed before, but something about the form of a man commuting the same act is disturbing.

Daniel silently approaches you, with a single knife in hand, and asks if you're ready to spring the trap. You nod, and he then asks if you'd like to go first.

The three rangers accompanying you each draw their bows and notch arrows. They can only fire three, and as you've seen a well placed shot can remove one from the fight for a good while. Thus, they take aim at the throats of the lycans, hoping to better the odds for you when you descend. The arrows are notched, drawn, and loosed, striking the enemy dead on. The lycans are taken completely by surprise, and the three that are hit fall to the ground in shock and pain. You and Daniel are the first to leap down, and begin the attack.

You descend upon the bewildered lycans and fall directly onto the back of one. With both hands gripping his shoulders tight, you cast Shock. Blue arms of electricity radiates from his body as you channel it through his system. You hear a gruesome pop from somewhere inside his body, and he falls to the floor. He seems finished for now, and so you think it best to focus your attention on one of the two lycans attacking Daniel. Despite being outnumbered, he seems to be holding his own quite well. With nothing but a knife, he cuts and slices across the lycans' various body parts. One of them tries to swipe at him, but Daniel only sidesteps the attack and plunges the knife into his shoulder, then twists and pulls. The lycan's entire arm seems to rip out of place, causing him to scream, which Daniel rewards with a slash across the throat.

You get up off of him and prepare another spell. With a snap of the fingers, sparks blink in and out around the lycan, and then he goes up in dramatic flames. He howls in agony, writhing and tossing on the forest floor.

As you pull the blades away, the flesh quickly begins to heal, but with enough effort and speed, you manage to nearly divide his head from the rest of his body. You notice now, though, that his comrades who were incapacitated are beginning to rise. The rangers in the trees drop down and begin fighting, but they are much less able than Daniel, and the fight becomes even. With one last great chop, you sever the last strand of sinew holding together the lycan's neck. His form is limp, but you still see his eyes darting around. You wind up your leg and punt the head away, as far as you're able, then turn to the remaining enemies.

You run over to Daniel and join him in combat. He seems to be doing well, dodging and slicing without even needing to resort to his swords. With the two lycans assaulting him distracted, you leap onto one nd cast another shock spell. Together, you and Daniel subdue the foes, and you work to decapitate another one of them. Daniel doesn't take nearly as much time, though. As you do this, you hear a cry of pain that doesn't sound like that of the lycans. You turn to see one of the rangers being bitten in the shoulder, blood gushing from the wound. Daniel drops his target and rushes in, plunging his knife into the eye of the offender and pulling him off. You yourself finish your task and go to help, then catch something in the corner of your eye. The head of the lycan you killed a minute ago is no longer merely a head. It has sprouted half a torso and one malformed arm. The rest of its body appears to be reconstituting itself as well, albeit slowly. You can only imagine the two you and Daniel worked to kill will follow suit.

You point out the lycan to Daniel, who for once seems to be taken aback. He nods and sounds the retreat to the others. As you and the rangers escape, Daniel looses what appear to be black pellets that burst into black smoke, blinding the lycans. You all make top speed away from them, using the trees to cover your tracks. By the time you feel safe, you have been moving for nearly 20 minutes, and your injured ally is close to passing out from shock. As the rangers set him down to treat the wound, Daniel approaches you. You exchange information on the fight, trying to piece together any sort of edge you might take. You tell Daniel about their regenerative ability, and he tells you that they seem to heal much quicker in their true form. Once the team is rested and ready, you all head back to the outpost.

You, Daniel, and some of the officers have a meeting on the next course of action. It seems like a pressing situation, as not even magic or removing their heads stopped them entirely. Eventually, the meeting disbands for the day, seeing no point in wasting time sitting around with no ideas.

As you walk together with no actual destination, you tell her about the lycans and their inconceivable healing abilities. She doesn't seem as distraught as you'd expect upon hearing about unkillable monsters bent on wiping out the forest. She stops you as you walk and pats you on the shoulder.

"You act like you've tried all the options. It seems like you're much too focused on how to kill them. Did you ever try to think of the problem in a different way?" You ask what she means, and she laughs. "You don't need to kill them, you just need to stop them. Do you understand?"

It only takes a few hours to get everything set and ready. As the group stands on the edge of the outpost, Daniel wishes you luck in your mission, and leads ten more rangers in to occupy the lycans.

You and Helda move at a brisk pace through the woods, making a beeline for the house. When you approach it, everything seems to be intact, and you enter. Telling Helda to duck down somewhere with the headmaster, you run down the stairs and try to cut the lycan off. The rangers stop firing arrows and switch to head on assaults, but of course no amount of damage deters him. They are merely throwing their lives away. You arrive shortly, and begin casting the spell. The lycan spots you, however, and seems to recognize you. He runs at you, and before you can begin the ignition, he tackles you. You wrestle on the ground, a losing battle if ever there was one, and he claws you across the chest, ripping your leather open. One of the rangers tackles him in return, driving him off you, but also ending up with the lycan's jaws around his neck.

You begin the spell again, this time aided by the lycan's brief pause to dispatch one of the rangers. You extend your palm toward the lycan and begin to close it slowly. You see frost start to form on its back, covering his body. He notices the chill and spins around to see you. He rushes at you again, and drives his claws into your stomach. They don't pierce very deep, but the force of the blow and the pain force you to the ground, and the spell stops. The lycan stomps over to you, and pins you down by your arms. You look up and see his dripping muzzle and smell his foul, meaty breath. He opens his mouth and clamps it down on your shoulder, tearing into the flesh and ripping it with violent jerks of his neck. You scream as the pain washes over you. You struggle to free your hands, but his strength and weight is too much. You have no means to cast spells or draw a weapon.

Then, you feel a shock run through your body. Electricity dances between you and the lycan, and he rolls off of you. You look over to see Helda, hitting him with the same spell she use to stop the owlbear. There is no time to watch her work, however, as you struggle to your knees and begin casting Freeze one more time. Now, Helda's spell keeps him still long enough to finish, and you see his body stiffen, then turn blue, then ice crystals begin to form and expand all over him. In time, he is encased in a 5 inch layer of ice. You fall on your back, howling in pain as the blood escapes from your shoulder. Helda runs over to you, and lifts your head up to her chest, cradling your head tightly and planting kisses on your sweating face.

"Oh, my poor baby! You're bleeding! Momma's gonna make you better, baby, it's okay!"

You allow her a moment of catharsis before reminding her of your massive injury. The rangers scoop you up and bring you to the infirmary, a bumpier trip than you would have liked to be taken on in your condition. They plop you down in a bed and begin looking at the wound. You're fading fast, but they tell you that stitches won't heal the torn flesh properly, and magic must be used. A minute later, the pain of the bite is compounded with the pain of a healing potion, then another, both dumped out on your bare and bleeding flesh. You pass out from the pain and lost blood.

That evening, you reawaken in the infirmary, woozy and sore. You look around. It is sunset, and the infirmary is haunted by rangers injured in the attack, as well as others either sick or hurt somewhere else. Next to you, Helda plays with her string, but when she notices you are awake, and leans over and wrap her arms around your neck, then kisses you on the side of your face. You ask her what happened after you passed out. The lycan you froze is still trapped in the thick ice, and the rangers are already arranging to have him locked up and transported north before spring sets in to thaw him out. There is still no sign of Daniel, but the rangers are too worried about an ambush to send a search party after him now.

Soon he is trapped and frozen solid, but the other lycans are on to you now. They run at you, first clamoring to reach you in the trees, then resorting to clawing away at the trunks. The entire encounter is an absolute farce from an outside perspective, but for those in the moment, it is an intense experience. You eventually manage to freeze another, leaving only 3 to deal with. Daniel chops and cuts the lycans' legs and arms, but even this does not slow them significantly.

Using both knife and axe, he manages to rip the legs of of one, giving you time to freeze it while the others are at bay. Eventually you widdle the group of them down to one. Daniel slips it into a hold from behind, using the axe to hook its neck and the knife to split its ribs. You slowly watch as it freezes from the inside out. Daniel releases it just before it begins to truly take, in order to avoid getting caught in the spell himself. The lycan falls to its knees, and crawls toward you. It reaches out a clawed hand, trying to grab at your face. Just an inch or so away, it ceases moving. You stumble backward, exhausted and nearly passed out. She forbids you from studying that night, in favor of proper rest.

You spend the rest of the day relaxing and getting some reading done. On the morning of the next day, you are fit to roam again, and do just that.

You go to pack your things and head back to the house with Helda, but are stopped by Daniel on the way. He invites you to have a drink with him before he has to depart for HQ.

A) Another time
B) One drink won't hurt

You tell Helda you'll meet her shortly, and head off with Daniel to have a drink in private. You find a quiet spot in a high branch overlooking a great deal of the forest. With all the excitement over, things seem to be going back to normal. As you sit down, Daniel produces a large bottle of something or other and pops the cork. He tells you its a ranger brew, moonshine. They drink it to celebrate. You get a whiff and smell flowers and honey. Daniel takes a large swig, then scrunches his face and passes you the bottle.

A) Have a little
B) Have a good swig
C) Feel the burn

You have a small sip from the bottle. The taste isn't nearly as good as the smell. It does burn a little going down, but it doesn't seem any stronger than wine. You pass the bottle back to Daniel.

"What's the matter, don't like the creature? For someone who fights so hard you sure do have a sensitive gut." He takes another long swig and passes the bottle back. It's nearly half empty now.

A) Just have a little more
B) Take a swig
C) Drink the remaining

You throw back the remainder of the bottle, letting it wash down your throat as you ignore the burn it brings on. Daniel sees the feat and cheers you on. When it's finally done, you chuck the bottle out into the forest without thinking. Thankfully Daniel doesn't seem to mind a little litter. He pats you on the back, congratulating you on growing a spine.

"It's a shame I have to leave so soon. It was a lot of fun coming here and meeting you. There's never anything to do back at HQ, the elders always just have us watch the others train, or fill out paperwork. I'm gonna have to fill a load out when I get back, I bet. You know, we never even get to go out and just have fun. Black Berets have to be some kind of icon for the order. I'm proud of it, but at the same time I kind of wish I could just leave it all behind and do something spontaneous. You know what I mean?"

A) Tell him you're not much for spontaneity
B) Tell him that's his lot in life
C) Tell him you know what he means
D) Stay silent

You reassure him, letting him now that there are plenty of people who feel that way. As you stare off into the distance, you feel a hand touch your shoulder. You look at Daniel, and he smiles at you. You give a slight grin in return. You remember that Helda is waiting, and begin to tell him that you should be going. Suddenly Daniel grips your shirt and pulls you in. For a kiss. The shock of it all stuns you, until a moment later when he pulls away, eyes dreamily half closed and smiling wider than ever.

"Well yeah, maybe but you know. I just thought we could like...nevermind, I'm sorry. Forget it ever happened."

You tell him it's fine, but you just aren't into that sort of thing. He seems to understand, and the two of you part ways after an awkward silence. You find Helda with her bag, ready to head back home. She asks what Daniel wanted to talk about.

A) Tell her it isn't important

You assure Helda that it was only a drink and nothing else happened. She looks at you curiously, but says nothing as you set off for home. The walk is silent and serene, and you can already see some of the animals reclaiming the area. You can also feel things getting warmer now. You hope that the lycans can be transported before they thaw too quickly.

Home again, you and Helda work to put the house back to rights. It takes the entire morning and most of the afternoon before the dust and mess is clean. When you finish, Helda gets to preparing dinner.

You offer to join her in cooking, despite her assurance that she can handle it alone. You do what simple things you can as she prepares the majority of the meal, and while you do, you bring up the idea of her leaving with you. You offer to bring her with you where you go, promising fun and adventure. She seems nervous at the idea.

"I dunno, hon. I haven't left this forest in a long time. I don't even really remember what the outside looks like. Plus, if I leave then who'll brew up red for the rangers? I have too much to do here to be going off on wild adventures."

You approach Helda from behind and wrap your arms around her. You hear a tiny squeal escape from her, likely due to surprise. You ask her to at least think about it while you're still around. She nods and continues making dinner. The two of you finish, and eat. Then, Helda brushes your hair as usual, and you both go to bed. There are no words exchanged for the rest of the night.

The next day, Helda begins your proper magic training.
