>I'm a jerk
You wake the next morning well rested and perform Helda's limbering exercises with unusual serenity. After a breakfast of honey toast and sausage, you spend the majority of the day helping Helda spice up her brew for the Rangers. She tells you that while there is no need to add any scents to a potion, it does add flair, and flair is the sign of a dedicated craftsman. You aren't sure you agree, but you nod and try to hurry the process as much as you can. Dinner comes a bit earlier than usual, which for you is good news, because every moment you have to study is valuable. Once you finish, Helda clears your plate and allows you to study more of her books.

You walk to the shelf and browse your choices. You've already gotten the basics of casting down, so it might be time to expand your ability.

A) Learn a second novice spell
B) Start reading on mythical creatures
C) Start the next level of spell study

Mr. Rags, if you come back, please don't be down that the others didn't show up this time. I'll stick around if you do post an update.
>>

You reach for the next book in the series you've already began. You take it and sit in your chair across from Helda as she plays with her length of yarn.

The book itself reveals more on the nature of magic and how it has been refined and revolutionized over the ages. It goes into the history of wands and implements, and their being made obsolete by channeling magic through the body of the caster themselves, a dangerous process but one that when mastered can greatly increase the reliability and even potency of some spells. It denotes several significant historical figures in magic, including a few wizards who invented entire branches of spellcasting such as illusory magics and even necromancy, though this section is brief and mostly stands as a warning to those who would play god.

The end of the book contains more practice exercises, similar to the previous book. However, you can't help but feel like there are a few concepts you don't quite understand as well as you'd like to. Still, the night is nearly up now.

A) Review the chapters you're fuzzy on
B) Try the exercises

You decide it would be better to go back and look over the chapters you aren't sure off. After a few refreshers, you realize that in your haste to absorb as much of the work as you could, you skipped a few stuck pages. With them, you are clear on the concepts portrayed and think you are ready to move on.

One of the interesting things you pick up from this review session is the method by which many mages amplify the intensity of their own spells. With a little practice, you master this process.

The 'Candle' spell has become 'Lantern'

After all this, Helda orders you to bed, and you go through your now nightly ritual before getting some rest. The next morning,.Helda asks you to help her deliver the finished brews to the Ranger outpost, telling you that if you don't help, she'll force you to take a bath tonight.

>>

You agree to help her make the delivery, sacrificing the extra hours of practice time you would get. You help her pack the bottles in wooden crates with a few mesh pads meant to protect the glass in case of heavy impact. After finishing, Helda tells you to wait in your room while she prepares something. You don't question it, sitting on the edge of your bed as you practice manipulating the intensity of Lantern. You can reduce or increase the luminosity of the spell fairly easily, ranging from it's original brightness to that of a true lamp.

When Helda returns, she places a neatly folded set of clothes on your bed and tells you to get changed. You protest, but she reminds you of your earlier agreement. You unfold the clothes and find them to be little more than dress clothes, but ones you'd never wear willingly. A pressed white shirt and black pants, as well as black gloves and a red sash. You squeeze into the outfit, with some help from Helda, and the result is a compressed belly and itchy back. Helda applauds your new look, however, and pushes you out the door with two crates of red potion. Helda herself only manages to carry one crate, and with much less vigor. Her pace forces you to walk at almost a half step, listening to her groan and huff, and that's on the reasonable terrain.

You head back to Helda, tossing one of your crates on top of the other as you let them ride your shoulder, then snatch hers away from her. She thanks you with a wide grin and a peck on the cheek. You briefly contemplate letting the crates fall to the ground, then remember that the mesh would only make it pointless.

You make it the the outpost much quicker moving at your own pace. You reach the outpost before noon, and are met by a few rangers who tell you to take the crates up to the storage room. You follow Helda up the fungal staircase and across a few branches, to a large hollowed out tree truck with a descending staircase that you think they must use for storing goods. Most of the things are sealed up in wood crates, but you can clearly smell meat and cheese, as well as bread and perhaps even a bit of wine. The whole process of dropping the crates off seems tense, as the rangers speed you along and don't let you stop to rest for even a minute before shooing you out. Whether this behavior is their natural habit or it is born from your previous actions here, you don't know for sure.

Helda collects a small pouch of gold coins, and three new crates to carry home, all full of empty bottles that you imagine once contained potion in them. Helda trusts you to carry them the same as you carried them here, which annoys you slightly, but you think that at the very least they're only about half as heavy. Before you go, Helda asks if there's anything you like to pick up before you leave.

After several minutes of negotiation, Helda and the rangers agree to provide you with the items previously confiscated from you during your arrest. They of course include a sword, your bow, your knife, as well as a compass and map, though the map will do you little to no good here. You ask Helda to carry them as you carry the crates back to the house. The walk back is a bit shorter, and you arrive in a little over an hours. When you enter the door behind Helda, she asks if you'd like some tea.

We created a minor imbalance. Easy to rectify, up until the bird-bear, and we didn't even kill it. The witch did.
Then she got off scot-free, for killing a big, unusal beast that she didn't even need to kill, while we got enslaved for a few birds and squirrels that we gathered up for food and only killed specifically to get the rangers to do their damned job. Food that the rangers then probably ate.
I'd be slightly less pissed about the unlawful slavery if there wasn't such an air of hypocrisy. Also, if it hadn't been so very clear that the rangers knew we were getting screwed over for no other reason but to fill their pockets, and still continued to pretend it justified.
I may have spent too long typing that out.

You have learned the spell 'Reach'

You extend your arm fully and fan your fingers. Across the room you can not only manipulate, but feel the nature of objects. You feel around the room with your new spell to experience the sensations it brings. Helda's coat is soft and warm, the pantry door is firm, and the teapot is hot to the touch. This spell resembled having a third, elongated arm with a normal hand at the end. It even suffers pain when you burn it. You notice two interesting things while practicing. The third arm seems to have a limited range, as the further you extend it, the more difficult it is to lift and move things. The second is that the arm seems unbound by distance, but halted by physical objects. You cannot reach through the pantry door, even though it is near enough.

You have learned the spell 'Chalk'

The second spell you discover allows you to mark the walls, floors and ceiling with thin lines of various colors. The markings can take any shape, including writing, and can be wiped away as if they were truly chalk dust. They can also be wiped away by your will. There seems to be no trace of them once they're gone, and you think it's possible they might only be a minor illusion. There doesn't appear to be a limit to the amount of linework you can lay down, but they are drawn as slowly as if you were creating them by hand.

After you finish learning these spells, Helda asks what you'd like for dinner, telling you that since you've worked so hard you deserve a treat.

You spend the remainder of your night hunting, preparing, and eating a meal of wild pig. Helda isn't a fan, but doesn't go back on her word. She does try to convince you to let her give you a bath, citing the fact that you smell like a pig pen, but you refuse, not wanting to tolerate more than she already forces on you. After, you decide to get to bed to rest for tomorrow.

The next few days go by simply, as you help Helda brew and study during your free time. You find, during this time, that despite your best efforts, the exercises in the basic book don't seem to work anymore. The ones you've already learned are easy enough to perform, but you simply can't get any new ones to function at all. Helda says that it might simply be a limitation of your body, and that it happens to most people. Distraught but not defeated, you continue to study Helda's books.

You have learned the spell 'Combust'
Similar to the ignition for the Candle spell, this spell requires you to snap the fingers of both hands, while using the direction of your index fingers to aim. It takes some getting used to, and your fingers begin to get sore, but eventually you get it down. You try it out on the wood beneath the black pot Helda uses to brew. A few snaps, and the spell seems to take effects. When you snap and point, a series of sparks go off at the point where the invisible rays created by your index fingers meet. They click into existence and then are gone just as fast. The result however, is all combustible materiel in the very small area igniting without any trouble at all.

After this, Helda decides to go to bed. You yourself feel pretty exhausted, but you think you might be able to stay up a while longer if you force yourself.

You decide to relax a little and let your fingertips rest as you study something less intense. You crack open a book on natural wonders, and flip to the section on Mana Springs. Helda brews you a cup of tea to keep you awake before going off to bed.

Through focused study of the chapters, you learn that mana springs are a name for naturally occurring nexus points of magical energy. It is unknown what causes them to form, and they generally have little in common except the fact that they can not be artificially produced by any means. These places are valued for their soothing ability, amplification of magical potency, and in some cases, ability to grant living beings magical powers otherwise unheard of. The book gives some examples of well known sites, such as the White Rock Plains, a great expanse of land owned by a city of traders. Legends say that living on the land for so long has made them incredibly beautiful and charming. You take special interest in sites that are said to be guarded by powerful beings. Many stories corroborate that these specific sites can grant a person incredible power if they are exposed to the energy. There are also mentions of some mortal people being born as Mana Springs, but you don't manage to finish that chapter.

After you finish what you can, you find that you can no longer remain awake. You rise from your seat and stumble off to bed, unsure of the exact hour. The following morning, you open your eyes to see Helda brushing your hair as you sleep. You swat her away and she apologizes. She sees your tired eyes and wobbly frame, and asks if you'd rather sleep in than help her today.

You keep a good distance as you tail them. Their pace is hard to match without making tons of obvious noise, but thankfully your training and years of practice kick in. What doesn't seem to match is your level of endurance. The people who took Helda, now passed out from exhaustion via screaming or perhaps simple shock, seem to have boundless reservoirs of stamina. You have to be very conscious of your breathing to prevent yourself from wheezing and giving up your location.

Eventually though, they come to a large clearing in which they seem to have constructed a sort of camp. You duck into the snow, ignoring your icey skin, and observe them. There appear to be 6 in total, and they all seem pretty mean. They stash Helda in a small tent and then have a small celebration in the form of tearing into a roasting turkey on their fire. The way they eat is savage, even to you. You're pretty sure they pick the entire skeleton clean by the end.

You notch and arrow and take aim at the nearest one, aiming for the back of his neck to assure his inability to contribute to his comrades' effort. You release and the arrow flies true. It impales his neck and he falls to his knees, gurgling and attempting to scream. The others perk up instantly, but to your surprise don't seem to concerned about their ally, and instead begin looking around the forest and taking large whiffs of the air. You notch another arrow, but as you aim the remaining 5 men are already zeroing in on your general location. You fire, this time hitting one on the shoulder. You switch targets and try to hit a new enemy. Their movements as they approach are somehow much harder to predict than when they were running from you. You take aim and release, but the arrow only grazes the head of your target, and before you can ready another arrow, they're just about on top of you. You try to fire again, as a reflex, but the nearest one pounces on you, pinning you to the ground. You struggle against him, and are shocked when he tries not striking or grappling you, but biting at your neck. You push his mouth away, and watch as it changes its shape into something gross and hard to describe. You manage to dig your feet into his stomach and kick him off of you, then right yourself for the fight that is soon to ensue. The rest of them are now taking on a similar trait about the mouth, with their jaws thinning and elongating, as well as rapid body hair growing all over. They's joints also seem to sprout white protrusions that resemble an instance in which you saw a man's bone crack and jut out of his leg. The change is quick and disturbing, and when it ends they are after you again. You start running in a large circle around the camp to keep the distance from them without getting too far from Helda. As fast as you run, they are able to close the gap at an alarming rate. You don't think you can outrun them for long.

You drop the bow where you are and stop. You spin around and draw your arms back to begin the ignition of Combust. Time seems to slow as one of the men pounces on you again, and your hands swing forward toward him. Only a few feet from you, the man is surrounded by sparks that spring to life, and in a split second, his body hair catches fire. He himself is sent back a few feet into the snow. As you draw your sword from it's scabbard, you have time to watch as the flames surrounding him find his body's fat stores and he goes up like flambe. The next one is one you quickly, and you engage in rough melee with him. It's clear that neither of you are trained fighters, and the battle becomes more of a brawl. Eventually, after parrying large swipes from hands with sharpened nails, you manage to stab into his stomach. He howls in pain, and you twist the blade. Your brief moment of victory is cut off, however, by the approach of more foes. More than there should be. 5 total. You suddenly realize that the one who earlier had had his throat pierced is now up and about, still witha blood matted neck but otherwise fine. The one you ignited just moments before seems to have no burns on his body, despite exuding black and acrid smoke.

You pull your blade from the nearest one, and watch as the bloody gash in his stomach seals itself up nearly immediately. Without any idea what to do or how to combat these enemies, you begin to run simply in an effort to gain time to think. They are much too fast to outrun, however, and are right at your heels. You have no choice but to scramble up a nearby tree. As you climb, you feel something rip your calf, and when you reach the top you see that one of them got close enough to take a swipe at your leg. Now you're trapped, with them kept at bay only by your altitude.

...I don't see why we couldn't circle around. Then watch the rangers descend upon them like a swarm of really annoying locusts.
Then while the rangers get torn apart, we can make progress on actually killing the beasts. By way of reach and sword, combust and tent the witch is trapped in.
Or did everyone forget that they took her alive, and likely want to keep her that way, possibly enough to put their lives in jeopardy?
>>
>>29546055
I say it's best we keep her alive. showing that we have repaid our debt and have her teach us magic man! she isn't the worst person in the world. if she doesn't grant us freedom. the least she can do is teach us her self.
>>
>>29546133
Fair enough. But I say that requires we actually trust her. Which we have no reason to do. We never owed her a debt. She's extremely unlikely to free us. Her tutelage has no major benefits over her books.
It's accepting a lot of drawbacks and some major risk for a very slim chance of recieving what is really almost no benefits.
Basic cost/benefit analysis. Pragmatic villainy, right to the core.

Thinking quickly, you seek to get out of this mess the same way you got into it in the first place. You aim at a nearby tree, and with a snap of your fingers, a series of rapid sparks ignites the branches. Soon the whole tree is burning, and some of the branches manage to catch others nearby. The clamoring monsters at the base of your own tree are half distracted by the flames and half focused on getting to you. A few minutes go by, and about 4 of the trees have gone up. For whatever multitude of reasons, no others seem ready to burn, but you hope that the ones you caught will be enough.

To your delight, you are visited by the sounds of shrill whistles and shouts from afar. The things at the base of the tree cover their pointed ears at the pitch, and are then peppered by arrows. The barrage continues as a duo of short men in green cloaks and leather armor dash from branch to branch toward you. They stop in the same tree as you, as the beasts below are constantly pinned by the myriad of sharpened shafts.

"Lords be, how did you get into a mess like this?" one of the rangers asks, "we've sent someone to collect your owner. Are you okay to run?" You explain the situation with your leg, and he contemplates for a moment. "Well we can either risk the others running out of arrows, or I can give you a hit of the red stuff. The ranger reaches into a small pack attached to his belt and from it produces a familiar looking bottle. He uncorks it and grabs a hold of your ankle. He then dumps the contents of the bottle on the injury you sustained earlier. It tingles at first, then rises to a burn. After a few moments, the pain subsides and you see that your leg is nearly good as new, save for a bit of a scar. The ranger leaves you no time to examine the wound, pushing you to hurry. The three of you make haste through the trees, gaining as much distance as possible from the strange monsters.

Eventually you make it to the outpost, where you see at least 40 rangers all with bows and massive quivers of arrows. There is a bit of chaos as things get sorted out, but eventually you are approached by one of the rangers, a young blonde woman who is uncharacteristically perky for her group. "The Black Berets are the most elite order of the Rangers. They are prized for their talents, hand picked for their amazing skills in their fields. We try to only call them in when there is a true crisis, and I believe a situation wherein we must fight a new strain of creature which has proven capable of killing entire squads of our men without sustaining so much as an injury qualifies as such. Unfortunately, until the dispatched man arrives, we must simply wait and hope they the Feywood is sturdy enough to withstand the slaughter that is taking place within." You change the subject to the creatures in question. "We refer to them as 'lycans'. Things that can take the form of a man, but are not truly. They are in actuality, wild and feral beasts who seek only to sate their bloodthirst. Under normal circumstances, they can simply be burned, and their restorative powers will not aid them. Fire has a curious ability to stop life in its tracks. These specimens however have proven to be far more powerful than any we've seen. We believe they may be some sort of monstrous experiment by the republic or the empire to wage war. Whether or not this is true, they have been loosed here now, and they must be stopped." Finally you ask about your own sale into servitude.

"Ah, yes. I thought you might bring that up. Please understand that our decision to do so was not made on a whim. The gold provided us was quite a neat sum for a single man, for one. Secondly, Helda has always been a kind and trustworthy friend to the Rangers. But the greatest reason for my decision to dust off an ancient law was because of the circumstances of your initial arrest. It's not every day that a man decided to hunt and Owlbear, one of the most fearsome creatures in the Feywood, at least until recently. Even our ranks tend to shy from their homes. Your attempts at escape were justified, given the circumstances. Tell me though, would it interest you at all to meet our visitor when he arrives? C is tempting, but we don't need to dive into waifuing just yet.

Show her our vigor.

When did she say she cared about you as a person?

I meant it in the general term. Train now, women later. If we even get a woman this time around.

>not getting a woman
>rags to riches
The only way I see that happening is playing as a mute tongueless eunuch who lost all his fingers.

Well it's good to know that my writing has been pigeon-holed

Rolled 2

lol yeah.

Well guys have a good one. remember keeping master alive = free magic training.
also free training = awesome as fuck

Well, our obvious choice this go around would be the witch, and we haven't been very accepting of her. If it turns out we do end up with her, holy shit we're tsundere.

So far we've been an inquisitor and a monk/god. Both times we had women, and both times we were good. We seem to be shooting for evil this go around, so we could go without being tied to one woman too.

Cmon Mr. Rags, you just know it's a tradition.
Plus the joke value still stands.
but in all honesty I'd really like to play a chaste honorable warrior race guy
>>

Well to be fair we do kind of push you into things, and you seem to work with it to appease.

At least it's enjoyable, and in the end isn't that what really matters?

The two of you head down to the ground floor, and a small fenced in yard full of stuffed dummies. There are several other rangers hanging around, practicing with various weapons. You note that the rangers seem to use a wide number of exotic weapons. They also seem very handy with twin blades, be they axes, swords or knives. You come to a stop near a rack of training weapons.

"Here's what we rangers specialize in. The twins, the bow and all these funny looking doodads like the bola, the shuriken, the kukri and the sai. Which one do you like the best?"

A) Learn the 'Twins' style
B) Learn an exotic weapon
C) Master the Bow

>A) Learn the 'Twins' style

Just for now. We've got bow experience, but our melee is weak. We can work more on bows tomorrow or the next day.

Though bola is pretty useful.

Do you want to choose the description already, monsieur Rags?

You ask to learn the twins fighting style that the rangers seem to prize. She nods and starts you off with a pair of matching weights meant to build your strength and coordination. It is this way that you spend the three weeks time between returning to the outpost, and the arrival of the Black Beret.

Don't panic, I was just watching a show and something happened that made me want to actually burn down the studio tears of passionate anger. I'm sensitive like that.
