So much for an early start today! hahahaha. Long story short, Puppies, traffic, and dentists appointments do not leave much time for food and planning. It's been noted.

Archive here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989

Pastebin is... somewhere. hahaha! I'll link it in a bit.

++

“So, how exactly is this going to work?” You ask Ice, ducking partly around and behind her to get out of the way of another witch- one you don't recognize- on your way through the halls towards he office.

She shrugs. “The easiest way to put it is it's fighter weapons school all over. You'll be flying two to three sorties a day against whatever aggressors the matrons want to assign. Most of them brought a witch or two to help out.”

“So that's why the place is getting so crowded.” You note, drily.

She nods. “No one is really sure how to handle this, honestly. It's not the same as working with a new talent or the standard tests we all take when we go to an academy for the first time. The matrons seem to feel that the first order of business is to figure out what you two actually do.”

She pauses, unlocking the door to her office and stepping inside, motioning for you to follow her.

“Once that's done, they'll start in on the how you do it. Then they'll work over to how to detect it in incoming witches, and try to work out some method of detecting it in men.” She finishes, sitting down at her desk- some monstrous mahogany piece that's no doubt a bazillion years old and just soaked in historical value.

Well, either that or something someone pulled out of a decent furniture store about a day before you showed up. One or the other.

“None of them are going to try and fly with me or Merlin, are they?” You ask, suddenly remembering California and the Tomcat with Katya.

1/3
>>
She shrugs. “I don't think so, though they might. Thing to remember though is there's two fixed wing pilots here. You and Alyssa. That's it. No one else that I know of is even qualified with a civilian license, so if they're going to want to fly with anybody alone, it'll be you.”

You nod. “How likely is that?”

She shrugs again. “Not very, unless Samantha convinces them it really is all your doing.” She looks over at you. “Right now she's not having much success. Half of them think all you are is a... “ She shrugs, looking for the right phrase.

“Confidence booster. Like the magic shoes that let the girl dance in that one story, except they weren't really magical at all.” She frowns at the analogy. “That's not really the best way of putting it, but there it is. Long story short, right now the theory is your only contribution is you made Merlin believe in her own ability when no one else did.”

You snort. “Except that's wrong. None of you ever had anything but good to say to her.”

Ice shrugs again. “Yeah, but we didn't credit our continual success and survival on her. You did. And do. Look, Frank, Samantha practically worships you, you must be doing something good for her self-esteem.”

You shake your head. “Nothing she hasn't earned. Speaking of, where is she?”

2/3
>>
Ice leans back in her chair. “Down in the hangar. She didn't tell you? That's strange, especially for her. There's a team in from Chance, they're down there installing a lot of the components she helped design.”

“She wanted it to be a secret?” You ask, slightly confused.

Ice shakes her head. “I don't think so, but you know how she is. If it's you or that jet, she's pretty single minded. Some of the visitors are down there, too.”

She smiles. “They probably got put to work already. If you head down there, just make sure to say hi and check in with Merlin, ok?”

“You don't have anything for me?” You ask.

Ice shakes her head. “Not yet. Couple of the matrons want to meet you, couple other of the witches would like to be introduced, that sort of thing, but no flights, no orders, nothing major. Just stay out of trouble and go grab Slider or something if you want to tour the castle.”

[] That sounds like a plan, where's she at?
[] I'll head down to the hangar and see if Merlin needs a hand.

[x] I got a better idea- how about you take a break and we go explore?

“I think,” You say, leaning forward. “I have a better idea. How about you take a break and we go explore?”

She sighs. “I wish I could, but there's a lot of work to be done and I just don't have the time. There's a lot of reports and-”

“And most of it can wait.” You say. “C'mon, you said yourself there's a lot of old parts of the castle that have been closed off forever, probably a lot of neat history around here.”

She hesitates- a good sign. “W-well, I mean, I'd like to, but I just don't see where I'd have the time, and besides, a lot of those places are empty for a reason. Parts of this castle have been basically abandoned since the war, and-”

“And there's two of us and it's not like they've been entirely unmaintained since then.” You say.

“Some of them have been.” She says. “There's a couple towers that have been closed off since the war because of damage. And some of the outlying buildings haven't been used since then either.”

“So we'll be careful. C'mon boss, you need the break, and if it's not me, then it'll be Slider.” You say.

1/2
>>
>>29518133

Naw it's fine. Hell I'm the guy who brought it up.
>>
It works- she nods after a second's further hesitation. “Alright, fine. Let me go put on a pair of pants and-”

You look at her, kind of shocked. “You own pants?”

She stares at you for a second. “Of course I do. I don't walk around in my underwear all the time, you know, I do have a social life outside the navy.” She points a finger at you as you open your mouth to crack a joke. “Don't finish that sentence. I wasn't kidding when I said there was work to do, and I'm sure you could do some of it.”

“Yeesh. Bite my head off why don't you?” You say, kind of crestfallen. She just smirks.

The two of you walk back to your squadron's rooms, where you take the time to change out of your duty uniform and into a pair of beat-up BDUs you keep around for when you're helping the ground crew. You pocket your knife and a flash light, then slip a pair of gloves through your belt.

You're still of your room before Ice is- though you imagine she takes a few minutes looking for pants. It's not like she wears them all that much, you think. Not that you're complaining about that.

She steps out a minute later, tucking a flashlight of her own in a thigh pocket and clipping a pocket knife to the inside of her waistband. “Well, where do we want to start?”

[x] Downstairs, in the dungeon levels. Haven't been down there yet.

“What about the basement?” You ask. “Haven't been down there and it seems the most likely place for interesting things.”

Ice nods, indicating your flashlight. “You got good batteries in there?”

You nod. “Yeah, changed them out this morning.” you grin. “Merlin sleeps in, but girl is up like clockwork the second I hit a light. This is the only way I can get to the head at night.”

She shakes her head. “She's probably going to need psychological treatment after this is all over with.”

You chuckle. “I probably will too. Shit, if I wrote memoirs, would anyone believe them?”

Ice shrugs. “I'd buy a copy.”

She takes the lead, Heading down the staircase into the first level basement, down by the hot springs and bath.

“I always wondered about that.” You say, as the two of you pass the short hallway that leads to the hot spring bath. “Why the hell is the bath down here, anyway? And why's it communal?”

“It's roman.” Ice says. “The castle has been a witch hold for a bazillion years, but before that, there was a Roman fort here, built on the hot springs. The bath is from that.”

You frown. “How does the island go from Roman fort to Witch hold?”

Ice shrugs. “Probably the fall of Roman Empire. Witches served in the legions, it was actually a really good way to get citizenship. If there'd been witches here, maybe as the empire was retracting, they holed up. It would have been relatively safe, probably more safe than trying to make it back to Rome or out to the eastern empire.”

1/2
>>
She shrugs again, pushing some crates out of the way and turning on her flashlight, shining it into the dark rooms beyond a closed door. “It's hard to say, honestly. We'd have to ask a matron about it. I know the first castle was here when the Normans invaded and conquered the isles, and it's been a hold at least since then.”

“That's a pretty long damn time.” You note, stepping through the door after her and turning on your own flashlight. “The hold predates the nation?”

She nods. “Probably, anyway. The runway up there was originally built on the remains of some of the Roman buildings. The aqueduct, I think. They had to go in and rebuild it during the sixties to cope with the increasing weight of conventional aircraft, though.”

“Too damn bad they didn't make it any wider.” You say, stepping around a pile of long-forgotten boxes. “So what all would be stored down here?”

Ice shrugs, running her flashlight over the boxes and opening one- old, yellow paper fills it up. “Paperwork. Requisition forms from the fifties, it looks like. Well, requisition, pay, probably some letters and other official stuff. These are probably the unnecessary copies that weren't moved when their unit got rebased.”

“So, like, we probably won't find any skeletons or torture chambers or buried treasure, huh?” You ask, smiling.

She shakes her head. “Probably not, no.” She laughs. “Though I'd be willing to bet we'd find a room down here with a mattress and some bad porn. This was an active academy for a while, and it's not unheard of for girls to try and sneak boys in.”

You snort. “after meeting the twins, I can't say it shocks me.”

Up ahead, the hallway branches right and left.

Ice pauses. “I think, if I remember the layout of the basements correctly, the right should take us to the old bomb shelter. Left, I think, goes to a section under one of the towers.”

[x] Left sounds interesting.

You shine your flashlight in both directions before indicating the left hallway. “Bomb shelters are kinda boring.” You say, noting that there's rubble here you have to work around. Looks like it gets worse up ahead, too.

“We might wish for boring if this comes down on us.” She says, following your lead and shining her light up along the roof- where you see evidence of cracks in the stonework. “This is up under part of the castle that suffered pretty heavily during the occupation of east Anglia. This was a major target for the martians- lot of brass here, and shutting down a witch base wasn't far off their to-do list. Only reason these areas weren't rebuilt was because they weren't necessary, and the funding was used somewhere else.”

“Like where? I thought you witches had all the money in forever?” You say, looking in an empty room alongside the hallway. “How did it get used somewhere else?”

Ice shrugs. “Big scandal. Supposedly the castle matron was using it for personal things. Never proven, though, I guess, and she left the islands quietly. Ended up on Cyprus, I think.” She indicates the ceiling above your head. “The towers were deemed surplus to needs. They got an exterior repair at some point, I guess a pair of bomb damaged towers wasn't very good looking. But the interiors were never repaired. “

1/2
>>
“So I see.” you say, holding up a rope with a badly faded do not enter sign. One end of the rope is cut. “Wonder how long that's been like that.”

Ice shrugs. “We're not the first to explore in here, I doubt we'll be the last, too.” She says. “Besides, there's the sense of adventure to think about.”

“Adventure?” You ask, ducking under a fallen beam and turning around to help her- unnecessary, it turns out- she's more aglie than you by far.

“Sure. Not only do you risk getting caught with a boy on the grounds, but now you're in a long-disused part of the castle and the floor could give out. Makes it more exciting.” She says, conversationally. “Well, I mean, I'm sure it would for some girls.”

You let the comment pass, shining your light into another room- one with bottles, both broken and whole, lining wall racks. “Wine cellar?” You ask.

Ice peers in. “Looks like it.” She steps back and tries the door. “Door's wedged in pretty tight, though. You might be able to get it open, but I'm not sure it's a good idea to try.”

[x] You're probably right. We'll come back later, if we get the chance.

You take a look at the door and test it yourself. The top half wiggles in the frame- you can feel the door warping- but the bottom remains stuck fast in position.

You frown. “I think the frame's warped.” you say. “I could probably get it, and I don't think there's weight on the door itself, but it's pretty well stuck. Next time we come down, we'll bring a crowbar.”

She nods. “Sounds ok to me. Want to go up?”

You look up at the stairs and nod. “Sure, let's head up.”

“So what was in this tower, anyway?” You ask, helping Ice up from the basement.

She shakes her head. “Not sure, honestly. I think it was more living quarters, but I can't remember.”
She pauses, looking around the room- which, other than some debris, is empty. “One of the towers was a library wing, but it was pretty empty already, they kept a lot of the contents downstairs in the bomb shelter. The other was quarters for visiting nonwitches, and that was rebuilt on the south end of the island outside the wall.”

You nod. “And you think this one was the visitor’s quarters?”

She nods. “Yeah, I think so. It makes sense, this probably would have been a common area, like the one over in the castle proper. The wine cellar downstairs was probably next to the kitchen and cold storage, so... “ She trails off, then nods again. “Yeah, I'm pretty sure this was the visitor's tower.”

“So what kinds of things would be in here?” You ask, looking around the empty room.

She shrugs. “Probably not much. Both of the towers were pretty well cleaned out when they were condemned.” She looks around, her light tracking her eye's focus. “Best thing we'd probably find up here is some old beds and furniture, maybe some small stuff that's been passed over.”

[] Well, let's go up and check it out.

[x] Well, let's go up and check it out.

“Well, let's go up and check it out anyway.” You say, turning to start up the stairs.

Ice nods, and starts to follow you up. “Careful on these stairs, Frank.” She says, sticking to one side of them, nearest the wall. “no telling....”

You nod, noting the ominous creaking of the steps as you head up.

Upstairs is kind of a disappointment. The rooms are mostly empty- there's some small detritus here and there- a forgotten sock, a few scraps of paper- but nothing amazingly interesting. Some furniture remains, though for the most part it's either old or small and not worth the effort of bringing back.

One room still has an army cot- complete with the metal frame. Underneath, all you find is a few dust bunnies, though you do note the small, frayed bit of rope tied off on the frame. Grinning, you point it out to Ice, who visibly blushes.

“L-looks like someone had some fun, huh?” She says, laughing nervously.

You chuckle. “Looks like. Anything interesting in the closet?”

She shakes her head. “Nothing, unless you think hangars are interesting.”

The rest of the rooms seem to be about the same- there's really nothing in them of note. You go all the way to the top of the tower, before being stopped by a door with a big, heavy gauge padlock run through a metal bar lock.

“End of the line, eh?” You say, looking at it.

Ice nods. “Yeah, I think so. Roof is probably pretty unstable anyway, and we've been gone a while, we should head back.”

1/4 (I think)
>>
“Yeah, probably.” You say, agreeing. “Go ahead, I'll be right behind you.”

You're heading back down the stairs in relative quiet when Ice speaks up again. “You know, I had fun, Frank.” She says. “Thanks for making me come along.”

“Hey, anytime.” You respond. “You need to get away from the desk more, anyway.”

She sighs. “I wish I could, it's just that there's so much to do and-”

“And you've got both Slider and myself who can help with it.” You say. “Hell, I'm your lead Steelwing, I'm surprised you're capable of handling our paperwork. That stuff can be pretty arcane.”

She laughs. “It's not that bad, really. Though the way you people measure fuel in pounds is insane. Why do you do it in weight anyway?”

“It's...” You shrug. “It's just got to do with how we operate. The more fuel we burn off, the lighter we are, so the jet flies better.” You say. “so it's easier to work in pounds than gallons remaining, just because it saves us a step.”

She looks back at you, a smile playing on her lips. “You don't actually know, do you?”

You shake your head, grinning. “Hell no. I just know that the paperwork and the fuel gauge in the jet read in pounds.”

She turns around, still leading. “So that thing about the jet flying better-”

You nod. “Yeah, that part is the truth. It's not as pronounced as it would have been in the old prop planes- we've got a lot more thrust to go around, but it's still true.”

She shakes her head. “So the better you are, the closer to falling out of the sky you are?”

You nod. “Yeah, kind of. I suppose it doesn't make sense to you, huh?”

>>29524534

worry.jpg
>>
She shakes her head again, looking back in the wine cellar. “Not really. Strikers are a constant- they never really get low so much as eventually you just get too weak to operate them. But that's all dependent on the witch- like Katya seems to be able to fly forever. And even then, they fly just as well from when you take off as when you land, since the weight is effectively constant.”

“That and you have incredible thrust to weight and inherent thrust vectoring.” You point out. “I imagine a gymnast would make a terrific dog fighter as a witch.”

Ice nods, walking past the boxes of old paperwork. “Probably. Flexibility goes into it, most of us practice something to improve it. I think Slider is the exception, but I swear sometimes she doesn't have bones.”

You laugh at that. “Is that her familiar?” You ask.

She shakes her head. “No. well, maybe. Different girls familiars are different. Some of them, it really affects how they are. Some are nothing like their familiars would indicate.”

“Foxes are pretty lewd, though.” Slider supplies, stepping out of the bath, wearing slippers and a towel. “Hi Frank.”

“Foxes are not lewd!” Ice retorts. Her familiar emerging with the muted 'pop' characteristic of a witch going for her magic. Slider just smiles.

“Are too. What are you going to do, Tabby? Tackle me? All I’m in is a towel, imagine what people would think if they caught you-” Slider says, grinning.

“You- You... Ugh!” Ice exclaims, stomping back upstairs.

Slider watches her go with a grin, then turns to look at you.

>>
“You.” She says. “I'd make a lewd joke, but I think it'd go over even less well if they caught us.”

You nod. “Yeah, probably.”

She snorts. “Oh well. There's a few new faces, go say hi when you get the chance.”

You nod again. “Anything else?”

She grins. “Not unless you want to make it something else....”

You laugh. “Not right now. We'd draw a crowd and I don't know how to charge admission for that kind of thing.”

She laughs. “Damn shame. Give me a second to get dressed, then we can go say hi.”

You can't say you're looking forward to it.

What really kills me about quests is all the paths not taken. At least in a computer game you tend to be able to access basically everything. There's been so many interesting infodumps we've missed, scenes not pursued.

Hell, I'm still incredibly curious as to what Ice had in mind viz a viz our plane when she was drunk.
>>

>>
>>29524968
Me too, but I respected the decision.

We were told that there was nothing interesting upstairs yet we went up there anyway...
>>
>>29525004

Oh, I don't mean that stuff, I meant more stuff on the ground. Social stuff, infodumps, etc. I'm reasonably content with most of our in-combat desisions, barring the Kitty Hawk fight starting with the target rather than helping the Phantoms THEN going for the target.
>>
>>29525239
I agree. We were in a fighter jet and not particularly well equipped for the job, where as the more enemies we down the more friendlies that could do the job better get to do it. Just more mental scars for Frank. I'm just waiting for the inevitable snap.
>>
>>29525325
I'm surprised he hasn't had one about Berlin yet, honestly. It ended well, yeah, but that was some intense shit
>>
>>29525325
Well, we had the missiles for the job, I was thinking more that the Phantoms could have shot fairly well, but were getting massacred. Do what we need to do thin the ground a bit, let the Phatoms do their job without hindrace, THEN go for the target. Phantoms could have been useful, but not with enemy fighters taking them to peices.

>>29525362

I actually enjoyed the crap out of that. Good imagery, and enough burning briefly but brightly without going full potato. Darkly enjoyed the witches freaking out as well. I'm actually a little surprised we haven't seen more SWWW2 references yet. Returning to Barin feels oddly nostalgic. I'm really curious about the whole witch culture in general.

Wonder how the whole male magic thing'll turn out.
>>
>>29525362
