I've been toying with this idea for a while. Let's see if I can pull it off. In case I do pull it off, my Twitter is @ReverseChomp. --------------------In 1958, humanity found evidence of extra-terrestrial life on Mars. Earth's scientists attempted to communicate with them, but all attempts failed. In 1967, the aliens were encountered on the Moon. That was the beginning of the First Lunar War. Those who survived that war had only this to say: "The moon was hell." On April 19th, 1973, the aliens landed on Earth. They have swarmed over most of Europe and Asia. Entire nations - entire civilizations - have been erased. The world's population hovers around one billion. For a quarter of a century, humanity has been fighting against its extinction, and losing. The year is 1999. That fight is now yours. You are a Pilot officer of the Royal Air Force, straight out of the RAF College Cranwell. You were assigned to patrol and surveillance duty out of RAF Marham for a week until your promotion to Flying officer comes through and you can move on to the front lines. It's inefficient, but it doesn't bother you too much. Someone has to sit in an F-4N Phantom and stare at The Hague from across the North Sea and if you're the only warm body available for the job, so be it. War, with all its boredom and glory, is your blood. After all, you're...>[] Lord Robin Keith Elphinstone, Viscount of Keith, and military service to the Crown has been your family's duty for two hundred years. >[] Julian Reber, a Swiss expatriate trying to revive the ancient family tradition now that the Swiss government isn't so fussy about mercenaries. >[] Other - If someone suggests a background that I think I can work with, I don't mind running with it.

>>29469246>[] Julian Reber, a Swiss expatriate trying to revive the ancient family tradition now that the Swiss government isn't so fussy about mercenaries. This, always go for the Germanic.
You are Julian Reber, a Swiss expatriate trying to revive the ancient family tradition now that the Swiss government isn't so fussy about mercenaries. You technically violated your homeland's constitution to join the RAF, but nobody really cares and even if they did, they wouldn't have the legal authority to arrest you. Members of your family fought in most of the major European battles of the Renaissance and even when Switzerland banned citizens from fighting in foreign armies, members of your family entered military service beyond the mandatory requirements. Your mother was the Swiss diplomat to England and your father was a high-raking military official. They were both in London when Switzerland gave up, which is how you ended up there. You're not even sure the RAF is allowed to accept foreign nationals either, but it's not like the British military is in a position to turn people down. Besides, you did well during your training, earning a spot in the commandant's special training regimen, and your talents weren't restricted to the cockpit. >(cont.)
>>29469898>About the game mechanics:>Mechanics: The rolls are a standard d20. I'll be shamelessly ripping off Merc Command's system: The best roll out of the first three counts and a natural 1 negates the highest score. Once I have a roll, I'll add the appropriate modifiers and compare it to the opposed roll or Difficulty Check. >Skills: There are ten skills in the game: Bluff, Computers, Engineering, Gunnery, Leadership, Melee, Science, Stealth, Strategy, TSF Piloting. A character may have a maximum of five skills and each skill's rating is equal to the character's level. Skills are rated from 1-10 and are usually added to a character's roll as a modifier. >Resources: There are five resources in the game: Budget, Connections, Gear, Personnel and Rank. Resources are situational and may increase or decrease depending on a narrative. Like Skills, they are rated from 1-10 and are usually added to a character's roll as a modifier, so modifiers are usually from +2 to +20. >Non-Player Characters: Most non-player characters do not have skills, but may learn skills as they interact with the player character and become more important to the story. Their skills are usually set according to the character's area of competence, but players may choose in which order they are unlocked. This also allows NPC's to cover the player character's blind spots. >You may now vote for the main character's skills. Gunnery, Melee and TSF Piloting are there by default, but Gunnery or Melee may be removed if players insist. >You may pick two of the following: >[] Bluff>[] Computers>[] Engineering>[] Leadership>[] Science>[] Stealth (Note: A TSF's stealth systems are a Gear modifier and do not require the Stealth skill). >[] Strategy

>>29470543Science would probably involve studying the aliens and figuring out what they're weak against. Engineering and computers are for making and maintaining equipment, so we can probably still do that.Maybe we can even upgrade our Phantom till it matches the best of the best. If Char can kick ass in a Zaku, we can do it in a god damn Phantom.
>>29469923You learned the ins and outs of TSFs so you could know exactly how much performance you could squeeze out of them. The tech crews hated every single one of your modifications and the software engineers kept accusing you of installing viruses on the college's training TSFs, but when the RAF dumped you in a Phantom and you somehow figured out how to make it resemble a 2nd generation TSF, you considered all the disciplinary hearings a fair trade. Of course, you'll have to start over once you get your real posting, but that's all part of the fun. You're two hours into your current watch and it's time for your regular report. You open a channel to your flight lead."Red Flag 1, this is Red Flag 2. Nothing to report.""Red Flag 2, this is Red Flag 1. Report receive. Please standby."You frown, but hold off on cutting the channel on your end. Something was off about the Flight lieutenant's voice. You've only known your flight lead, Amanda Beckett, for a few hours, but from what you can tell, she's as monotone as the British get. A shit assignment like this shouldn't be getting her worried."Red Flags, this is Red Flag 1. The HMS Ark Royal hasn't made its regular report. I need two volunteers to go to their location and confirm their status."That, however, is something to worry about. The Ark Royal and its patrol task are the main reason why the RAF is only paying lip service to the Lowestoft watch sation and gave you Phantoms instead of Tornadoes. If anything makes it across the North Sea, the Ark Royal is supposed to report so RAF Marham can send real TSFs to fight it off. If you volunteer, you might be able to help them with repairs, but the other two members of your flight - Rook and Owens - aren't that great. You're not sure if either of them could defend the city if something is coming.>What do you do?>[] Volunteer to check up on the Ark Royal.>[] Let someone else go.

>>29470804You might as well go. Anything that can knock out the communication systems of an entire task force is probably a major deal and whoever stays behind can call the base if there's an invasion. This place isn't the front lines, but it's close enough for the civilians to undergo regular evacuation drills. They'll know what to do. "Red Flag 1, this is Red Flag 2. I volunteer to confirm the Ark Royal's status. Are there any indications of enemy contacts in the area.""Red Flag 2, this is Red Flag 1. Understood. You'll be the element lead. We have no known contacts in the area. We are not Code 991."Owens chimes in a few seconds later to volunteer and Beckett gives the order to depart. Your custom retinal HUD puts Owens' TSF data on the foreground, while Red Flag 1 and Red Flag 3 become smaller windows in the background. "Red Flag 4, this is Red Flag 1. Form on my wing and take it easy. The Ark Royal's estimated position is only 30 minutes away, but even with a full tank, I don't want to risk burning fuel."You see Owens nod through your visual communication link. You lean back and start up your Phantom's engines while Owens moves into position slightly behind you. It takes longer to take off without a catapult, but your Phantom soon flies off the runway and over the sea, Owens not far behind. You gain some altitude to get a better vantage point, but you proceed at a reasonable speed. You've got about 30 minutes to kill before you can expect visual contact. >Is there anything you'd like to discuss with Owens?

>>29471637Supporting this. Also, can the laser classes shoot from the sea?
>>29471558You've got time and you have no idea what you're getting into. You met Owens less than a day ago and all you really know about him is that he doesn't have a degree, so his stint as Pilot officer is going to be longer than yours. You might as well check to see if he knows what he's doing."So, Owens. Have you got any combat experience?""Not really. I went through the basic training all pilots get and I at least lasted longer than eight minutes during the simulations, but I didn't get any of that fancy Cranwell training. What's that like anyway?"You were afraid of that. All your instructors told you the simulators didn't come close to the real thing, but it's better than nothing. Besides, it's not like the BETA have naval units anyway. Whatever happened to the Ark Royal, it's probably not them. You decide to talk to Owens about your own training. "It's intense. We were trained on just about every TSF the EU and the UN deploy just in case we need to jump into the nearest random machine and the survival time for a passing grade in the simulators is 15 minutes. That includes the orbital drop simulations." You think about leaving it at that, but you decide to give Owens some advice in case he decides to move up in the RAF. "Tell you want. If you ever decide to check the place out, look for an instructor called Pentecost and tell him Reber recommended you for the special training. It's brutal to get through, but it's the best way to get a solid foundation as a pilot."You don't tell him that half of the people who volunteer for the special training drop out after the first class. "Will do."You start closing in on the Ark Royal, but you can't get a visual and there's nothing on your radar. You're not too familiar with how the navy works, but they should be there by now.>(roll 1d20)

You don't know exactly how much wreckage is floating on the surface of the sea, but it looks about enough for the task force, assuming most of it sank. >Get out of there. >>29475048The idea of laser-hunting is to go ass deep into the BETA horde and one by one, find and gun down/cut down the laser classes while being ganged by all the other BETA and then get the fuck out.
>>29475040The sub rolled 15 on the defense. Our 13 was enough to beat it with modifiers. The 3 was for Lasers and the 4 was for Owens. He got really luck.

>>29475152I'm thinkin' we're probably about a Johnny Ridden. Now we just need a more famous pilot that people constantly mistake us for, much to our endless chagrin.

>>29475399I can imagine /tg/ the mine layer or /tg/ the Australian widelife releaser. I guess we can't be a part of biological warfare against the beta.No matter what we do, it will work for 2 weeks and no more.

Good luck out there."You activate the eight-minute countdown you programmed into your TSF when it was assigned to you. Your retinal display brings up status windows for 18 TFS - the full Crusader squadron, as far as you know. "Crusader squadron, this is Red Flag 2. I'm coming in from the beach to solve your Destroyer problem. Just hang on for a few more minutes.""Red Flag 2, this is Crusader 1. Thanks for watching our backs. We'll hold off those Destroyers as long as we can." You fly into the city from the beach at top speed. Your map displays a rough outline of the surroundings and the location of your Destroyer targets and your custom urban combat support software plots the optimal path through the carnage. You'll need at least two runs to catch all the Destroyers. Your finger hovers over the trigger button as the clock keeps ticking down. >(roll 2d20)

You come up on large parking lot between two buildings - your first killzone - and squeeze the trigger in short bursts to avoid friendly fire. Three destroyers die spurting blood out of their asses. Two Crusaders clear. You pull a drive-by on another parking lot and four destroyers go down. Five Crusaders clear. Your next killzone is a residential district. You hit a boosted jump to get a better view and you see four TSFs with what looks like severe damage to their engines, surrounded by five destroyers. They must have retreated there after taking damage and gotten blindsided. Lucky for them, the Destroyers are stuck on the houses. It's a simple job to charge down the streets and strafe them. Nine Crusaders clear. >(roll 2d20)

>>29476925i might have just fallen in love
>>29476561The second run is going to be tricky. The rest of the Crusaders have been pushed into a fighting retreat out of the city by eight destroyers and there are four other destroyers charging down streets off the main road. The four stragglers are easy. You charge down the main road, your guns aimed in opposite directions, and gun them down. The last eight are going to be tricky. Judging by your data, they're at full charge and you're not that much faster than them. Catching up isn't going to be easy. You head off into a straight line just off the Destroyer formation. The countdown keeps running and the rest of the Crusaders are maintaining their retreat. You keep going once you reach visual range until you're just off the leftmost Destroyer. Then, you pull into a sharp turn and pull the same manoeuvre that killed the sub, gunning down the remaining destroyers in a single strafe. Your engines die down as you end the strafe and you let go of the breath you didn't know you were holding. Eighteen Crusaders clear. The countdown reaches zero. You try to think of something heroic to say to the Crusaders, but RAF Marham interrupts you before you can even make the attempt. "All forces, this is RAF Marham. All forces confirmed clear of Lowestoft. Commence bombing run." In the distance, you see RAF bombers drop their entire payload on Lowestoft to clear out the Forts and the Tanks. Thanks to your TSF's sensors, you can also spot the SAS choppers that are going drop the clean-up troops once the city has been reduced to rubble. >What do you do?>Call in a tanker and head back to base. The bombers have just finished their run and the choppers are now unloading hundreds of special forces troops equipped with metal-plated body armour and fully automatic shotgun. Things won't go well for the BETAs left in the city. To your great surprise, the Crusaders leave without saying anything. In fact, all of the troops that aren't directly involved with the clean-up are leaving without saying anything. You're even more surprised when you see helicopters and tanks close in and your position and form around you in a defensive perimeter. After a few minutes, a car pulls out alongside your TSFs. You see an older woman exit and beckon you out. You have a feeling your debriefing is going to be complicated.

The truly ironic thing is that I was going to give the MC Leadership and Strategy as mandatory skills, but I figured /tg/ would pick them anyway and I thought you would appreciate the choice. I even planned for the first major NPC to be an engineer/hacker so that niche would be covered. Good news is, we can now have front row seats for that character's story arc and the leadership/strategy NPC I had already planned just got a much more interesting arc. The thread is being archived, so if you have comments, just leave them here and I'll check them out. 'Night folks.

Does anyone know if there's a TSF version of the YF-23?
>>29478412Yes.It sadly was rejected though, despite being far more effective against the BETA than the Raptor.
>>29478433>farIt wasn't THAT much better, only slightly so. There's also the fact that it had shit Anti-TSF capability, which, considering this is America were talking about, NEEDS anti-TSF capability.
>>29478433What?I mean at least in the real world fly-off there were legitimate reasons for the selection of the Raptor (the 23 was a maintenance hog, and couldn't knife fight to save it's fucking dick).
>>29478465Since when did America need Anti-TSF capability when there's an ALIEN INVASION GOING ON? And it still had the signature stealth the Raptor as well to aid it, I'm not sure where you got the terrible against other TSFs thing from.>>29478467Ironically enough, the Widow here was designed as a mid to close range fighter.
>>29478556>Since when did America need Anti-TSF capability when there's an ALIEN INVASION GOING ON?See pic relatedAnd no, the Widow did not have the True-Stealth of the Raptor. The reason the Raptor is so much better at TSF fights than the Widow is because of that True-Stealth. The Widow had almost no long-range capability, making it extremely weak against other TSFs.
>>29478556>Since when did America need Anti-TSF capability when there's an ALIEN INVASION GOING ON?Pretty sure that statement is meant to be at least somewhat sarcastic.
>>29478628You mean like when the Widow was beating the Raptor 18-14 during combat trials because they bothy possessed similar levels of stealth and therefore most fights were in close range where the Widow dominated?
>>29478713>18-14That is not nearly enough test to be a conclusive result. Not even close
>>29478767Yet it showed that the Widow was at minimum peer capability with the Raptor, and there a more than adequate machine to engage TSFs with in addition to being superior at engaging BETA.
Anon, are you seriously expecting logic from military procurement?
