To most nobles, Reinhold appeared from 'nowhere' a few months ago, with no prior heroics or actions of note reaching despite his apparent skill with the sword.
That plus his convenient backstory that left him only confirmable by a few people (that could be in on it)

Luci has been keeping him mostly in the dark about the kidnapping attempts it seems or slightly twisting the information she gives him, so it's entirely possible that things look different from his perspective

With the sheer number of enemies/'friends' that this nation has that wouldn't mind getting an advantage or just sticking one to him, it's not strange for him to be on guard,

BESIDES, this needn't have been planned to this point by whatever powers are behind Reinhold, he could simply have been a plant for Marianne and they decided to expend him elsewhere for reasons known to them when the banquet provided opportunity.

This combined with Reinholds sudden additions to his backstory (a la Volker stuff) that nobody knew of, not even the people who looked into his background before, it would be strange for anybody to just take it at face value.

And as he said, this is partly for Agnes' benefit, as Rein could just be some opportunistic bastard that saw an opening and went for it, hard.

I read through all of the critical analysis just now. It's very well articulated, although it's slightly more combative and hostile in tone than it probably needs to be, although given the frustrated tone the author has it's understandable, if not perfectly reasonable.

I feel, though, archelon has the self-awareness, especially after a week break where he no doubt thought about PGQ a lot, to have already, at least in some basic primitive form, come to the identical conclusions himself.

I do hope something changes, though, because I find myself agreeing with author-anonymous. I do hope it begins to be a more accurate character piece/drama where there's actual, real, tangible emotion, tension, and conflict, and as Reinhold develops as a young man who isn't being (literally) beaten around and forms his own opinions.

Failing that, I hope at least archelon makes it clear that this is going to be a happy-funtime VN ride as opposed to a serious business drama.

She's bound by her obligations as a princess, seeing as she was at one point resigned to the fact that she was going to be married off for political reasons, and that as much as she would want to go off adventuring, she would never abandon her duties. But she was always looking for a way out - for her prince to come and take her away from all the political bullshit she has to deal with.

Enter Reinhold. Now I'm not saying she's just using us to get away from everything - far from it. There's an honest attraction on her part; considering the nobles we've met seen and heard, we're probably the most genuine and nicest person she's ever met. The gallantry and good looks don't hurt either. But I have a feeling that even if it's subconsciously, there's more to it than just love for her.

Well we have some of that NOW. Since Lucy is having kidnapping issues.

But back home is ridiculously stable. There's like eight mega badasses hanging around and the princess already knows magic better than us. We've essentially spent most of our downtime grinding and rooting out harmless plots, and any real danger could probably have been dealt with without us.

We've blatantly been playing in tutorial mode, with nothing but spars and low risks. Reinhold has been getting better techniques and branching out and getting some titles and influence of his own, but it's barely enough to start being a player in his own rite.

The entirety of PGQ feels like we've spent almost a hundred threads playing the first hour of some kind of larger game to me. The party itself is almost like the first level in that respect. Hopefully by the time we face Monique things will REALLY kick off since now we have a good understanding of lore and mechanics.

As for the progression...I feel the pacing has been pretty good, at least in terms of what's actually on screen.

I think it's a problem of archelon can't generate content quickly enough to satisfy the volume of prose/dialog Anonymous tends to demand.

I agree entirely with this post. It feels like we're basically stuck in the 'common route' part before things start branching out, if we're using visual novel terms. Or the tutorial is fine too.

So far we've learned that we can kill your basic mercenary kidnappers and our fighting fundamentals are solid. Our magic isn't up to par but that doesn't necessarily hinder us adventuring and practicing different things.

I understand that Archelon has given us some branching points already. And places where our choices matter and we could fuck things up, like how we could've been bro's with Monique and instead he's got a jihad out on us. We're forging a story, but almost 100 threads in and we've barely scratched the surface. What we know about the world is gleaned from reading story books.

Reinhold is a royal bodyguard, so things can't be turned up to 11 all the time. But it seems an awful waste of this world to dick around with princesses forever, plots notwithstanding.

Way I see it, something is going to happen and reasonably quickly.

In terms of gaming, spots like this tend to be right where things turn to shit most frequently in tabletops and vidya. Either so after the comfort of the tutorial we can have a harder starting point for the "real" game, or to establish how serious the overarching threat is, or any number of other things. I've spent the last few threads waiting for the other shoe to drop and the alarms in my head have been blaring nonstop since the duel challenge. The last time I felt this way was right before the kidnapping attempt, and more than a few anons had been blatantly complacent, and one was questioning the need for a holdout weapon at all since "this isn't that kind of story".

The kidnappers were expecting a one day event then a bit of rest before the high risk people went home. A big showy duel like this throwing things off can turn them desperate, or try to be used as an opportunity. Or else Monique could finally snap all the way and take it too far. Or the kings will decide maybe we were too good to be true if they find out about the last bodyguard. There are SO MANY ways this could go wrong and from our position in the center of it, prevention will be hard.

The guests actually make way for you and Sylvie as you walk... part of it's probably because of your new status as Monique's opponent, and part of it most likely being due to Sylvie's position as Sir Vincent's daughter. Though you're quite appreciative that you're not forced to dodge through the crowd for once... those stares, dammit.

Which is the thing about bodyguarding, when you get down to it. It's not like fighting a pitched battle, where you at least know there's an enemy in the area and in most cases have a good idea of how engagement could happen. It's not like dungeon crawling, where you can partition off the danger from the rest of the world and tackle it on your own terms. It's not even like normal intrigue, where you have a rough idea of who the major players are and often why they want to kill you.

With bodyguarding, danger can come from anywhere at any time. A random passerby could pull a knife, which has killed multiple royals in real life. One day maybe a strike team comes in through the window and you have to be out of bed and armed in under thirty seconds. Or perhaps some guy with a crossbow pegs you with a poisoned arrow from a rooftop.

We got complacent around Luciana, and had to snap back into form and use only our dagger. If that was Marianne and we didn't have someone with an actual sword on them with us, it could have been much, much uglier. This party is full of unstable characters and there's already at least one plot against a friend involved. Most days don't have anything going on, which is pretty realistic, but it only takes about a minute for things to get really bad and that minute can happen any time of day. I don't want to sound ultra edgy or paranoid, but lets keep in mind honor duels and dancing aren't what we're paid for.
