Hello /tg/, how about tonight we make some Nechronica characters?

Nechronica is a Japanese Doujin RPG about playing a Doll- an undead child in a post-apocalyptic world where "the only thing that moves is the flesh of the dead" after world-spanning wars have wiped out every last living thing.

Sadly, the rulebook hasn't been fully translated yet. I however took my time to make you an accellerated chargen guide right here:
http://pastebin.com/LuCjrSqd

So go on, make your very own undead loli! I'm fairly sure that I can say this game has the best SAN mechanics I've ever seen so I hope you can soon find a game you can enjoy!
>>
Absolutely adhorrible.

Shame I can't find a group for it, though.

I read a Nechronica replay, and as expected, the setting and plot was appropriately macabre, although it did have a happy ending.

Rolled 7 + 7

Alright, in order to explain how this works, lets make a Doll together /tg/. Starting with the guide up top, we got step zero: Name and Age at Death.

>Your doll must have a name and must determine her Age at Death. This determines her appearance due to the undead being incapable of ageing. It does not determine her mental age which can be 20+ for a doll that appears 6 years old or 6 years old for a doll that appears 20 years old; death does bad things to brain chemistry, or maybe the Necromancer just stuck a different cranium inside the skull. On average or if you can't decide on an age, roll 1d10 and add 7 to the result. You are free to pick it yourself of course.

Since I don't exactly want to make the character creatin at will right now, we'll just let the diceroller handle the age and I'll let you guys pick the name. Any ideas?

Elizabeth Juliet Cooke it is! And apparently her age is 7+7=14 years old, at least on the surface. Following this, we need to go for the Fragments of Memory and the Premonitions, the things that give ourr little udead rascal a will to live.

>Both the Premonitions and the Fragments of Memory tell you something about your doll's past and can be used as jump-starts for character design inspiration. You roll a d100 for the Fragment table and you roll it twice because you get two Fragments. They are the patches that hold the heart of your Doll together.

Lets only do the Fragments for now since I don't know how to roll two different dice in one email field. But wait:

>The Nechronica TL website features only 10 Fragments of Memory which is of course not nearly enough. I managed to acquire a partially translated PDF which features at least rough translations of the 100 that there should be, you can work off of those. You can load it off the link in the index.

So I downloaded that and check the table now.

Okay, so the kid is a dreamer, thinker-type. At least mentally, she don't seem dim. What the body looks like we'll have to choose later on.

On to the next step, the so-called Positions of your undead little girl. You can pick any one but it'd make sense if you'd connect the things we got before with the one here in some sort of narrative manner.

> Alice - Spiritual Healing. Has skills that make lowering Madness Points easier. A tender girl's heart.
> Holic - Frenzied. Pay in Madness to hit harder. A selfish drive to uncover your past.
> Automaton - Machine of flesh. Skills make her hold fast. She suppresses her feelings to escape pain.
> Junk - Veteran close-combatant. Movement is enhanced. A girl used to loss but still carries on.
> Court - Bookkeeper. Support your sisters' attacks, defence and sanity. Even a dead world needs thinkers.
> Sorority - The Sergeant. Inspire and support your sisters. A natural leader and tactician.

You choose.

Alright, by popular vote we'll go with Sorority. Did you know she has a skill called Tough Love that makes it possible to remove one Madness Point from one of your sister's Fetters when she had a part of hers crushed by an attack by you? You're going the S route pretty far, but we'll get back on that later when we handle the Skills.

Next up, the Classes. You get to pick a main class and a subclass. You can choose the same class twice to super-specialize but I advise against it.

> Stacy - Extra sturdy and reliable. Can defend her sisters the best. 1-1-0.
> Thanatos - CQC weapon user. Skills annihilate enemies. 1-0-1.
> Gothic - Cannibalistic monster. Unarmed CQC, self-heal and debuffs. 0-1-1.
> Requiem - Gunner. Skills improve shooting. 2-0-0.
> Baroque - Mutated beast. Unarmed CQC DPS and regeneration. 0-2-0.
> Romanesque - Cold dancers more metal than meat. High dodge and precision. 0-0-2.
> Psychedelic - ESP. Most skills cost Madness Points. 0-0-1.

Those numbers are important, they are the amount of Reinforcement Parts you get for later on when we build the character's body. In this order: "Armament - Mutation - Enhancement". That's like weapons of any sort, flesh-grafts and Deus-Ex-style augmentations in that order.

Alright, I think Stacy is pretty solid by now. So you want to take hits for your Nakama, that's pretty honorable. And Requiem also has most of the votes so Tank / Gunner it is. Moving on to the next step: the skills. This will be a bit messy, so I'll leave you to it.

>Pick one skill out of your Position, two out of your main class and one out of your subclass. You may not pick one of the marked Special Skills unless both of your Classes are the same.

Order sounds good, I have no bloody clue about the mechanics but it sounds like it lets our teammates attack more, or faster, or something like that.

Defend seems obvious, and Meat Shield seems like it might be good too.

>Secret Whisper

>>
>>29457074
>>29457068
Some advisory on the side:

I advise against Trusted Companion because it only allows for regening a melee part (as in, YOUR Trusted Companion) and you'll need that slot for something more useful, such as making about one fifth of your shots hit instead of miss.

Order is like a call out for your Sisters to watch out and turns their attacks from normal attacks that can be responded to in some degree to Rapid attacks which mechanically makes them something like Attacks of Opportunity, meaning damage right here right now.

>>29457201
WROOONG
Secret Whisper gives you Conversation Checks. What does this mean? Well, Conversation Checks are one of only two ways to lower Madness Points, and the other is to pay in XP (or "Favor Points" as they call it) for it. The benefits should be obvious.

Tough love is pretty well-described.

I'll take Defend as picked then if so many of you agree on it.

Makes sense.Gotta take them hits after all. Okay, now the Skills are done. We have:

Sorority: Order
Stacy: Defend, Meat Shield
Requiem: Gun God

After this, we have to start with the Parts that the Doll is built out of. First, the Basic parts that every doll has:
> Head Parts: Brain, Eyeballs, Jaw
> Arm Parts: Fists, Arms, Shoulders
> Body Parts: Spine, Entrails, Entrails
> Leg Parts: Bone, Bone, Feet
In this game only your chunks count, there's no HP. You can be walking around without a head, it doesn't matter for your combat prowess since you're undead anyway. You just lose the boni that you get from having those parts that you lost.

What really matters are the Reinforcement parts. Since we chose Stacy / Requiem, we got three points to spend on Armament slots and one point to spend on Mutation slots, plus one point you get by default that you can throw anywhere. These five you can use to buy two tier 1 Parts, two tier 2 parts and one tier 3 part from wherever you want.

http://tlwiki.org/index.php?title=Nechronica:Armaments
http://tlwiki.org/index.php?title=Nechronica:Mutations
Since it's a support gunnery character, focus on guns in armamaments.

I gotta leave in about 25 minutes for a three-hour thing so either choose really fast or take your time until I am back.
>>
>>29457327
Order it is then.
>>
>>29457489
>buy two tier 1 Parts, two tier 2 parts and one tier 3 part from wherever you want.

Uhhhh, ok, lets go with First Aid Kit and Sniper Rifle for our two Tier 1, Scales and Armor Plating for our two Tier 2, and FLAME THROWER for our Tier 3.

Did I do that right?

I figure it gives us some healing, a long range weapon, plenty of defense, and a goddamn flamenwerfer for when we want to get up close and personal.
>>
>>29457582
You did that corectly. Here's another description:
>Usually you should get 4 points from the class plus 1 which you get by default; unless you picked a class that has less (like Psychedelic) or have picked a Class skill that gives you more (like one of the Romanesque skills). The number of Reinforcement Parts you can get is equal to the number of Reinforcement Points you have. For a more detailed description, check here:

In the Japanese CoC books, all the example characters are in high school or similar, as opposed to the western characters in their thirties or forties.

Those two girls in particular are effectively the mascots of Japanese CoC. The girl with the bow in her hair is a martial artist, and the other girl is an investigator. They are featured in most example adventures and supplements and are so representative of the game that they even got special guest cameos in the Haiyore! Nyaruko-san anime.

These are the bonds that tether your Doll to the reality she is in right now and are the only thing standing between her and becoming a crazed Horror or a deluded Savant, or simply collapsing in on herself and stopping movement forever.

The first Fetter a Doll hat is a permanent one and one you will always have to look out for: Dependent upon Treasure. Their Treasures are the foundation of the Dolls' Hearts, and they cannot do without them. Even if a Doll acquires additional Treasures, they will have "Dependent upon Treasure" only once. All Treasures share a single Fetter.

http://tlwiki.org/index.php?title=Nechronica:Doll_Creation#Treasure_Table

Go on, roll 1d10 to choose which Treasure she carries around with her.

TO A DEGREE, but some points / characters need to be made. Specifically this one, so the new posters who joined in can get to making a new character that actually interests them.

So we got a 5.
>05 Mirror You have a small hand mirror. You've made use of it many times. You might not like the face reflected in it, but the reflection itself is precious to you.

That'd be that then. Here's her starting stat block:

Name: Elizabeth Juliette Cooke
AAD: 14
Fragments of Memory: Starry Sky + Tea Party
Premonitions: Inversion (memories must be regained)
Position: Sorority
Class: Stacy / Requiem

Skills:
Sorority: Order
Stacy: Defend, Meat Shield
Requiem: Gun God

Parts:
t1: First Aid Kit, Sniper Rifle
t2: Scales, Armor Plating
t3: Flame Thrower

Fetters:
Dependent on Treasure - Mirror

Alright, that would be that for her! Except for one thing: That's not all the Fetters she gets. Adding onto that, your doll will have one Fetter towards each of her sister dolls, displaying the type of her attachment towards her. In a funny twist, the .pdf has a very lacking Fetter table, but the website has one about three times as big. So check in at http://tlwiki.org/index.php?title=Nechronica:Doll_Creation#Fetter_Table and roll one for each party member. Since she doesn't have any (she is so FUCKED) we won't do that just now.

So, who wants to have the Madness System explained before we continue with the next char? I love it.

The Madness System is fucking amazing. CoC can shoot itself in the head for the piece of shit it has as it's central mechanic.

For every Fetter your character has they get four slots for Madness Points. You can take three with no big issues but when the fourth comes in that specific Fetter enters a state of Madness.

We have two Dolls, lets call them Tomari and Aisha. They both have their Dependent on Treasure Fetter and one Fetter towards each other, so they're always eight Madness Points (at best) away from going totally fucking crazy. A normal Fetter towards a character is rolled on these charts http://tlwiki.org/index.php?title=Nechronica:Doll_Creation#Fetter_Table.

Let's take for example that Tomari has the Fetter Constant Contact, and lets say that she took one too many Madness Points. Now she's struck with this:
>During combat, if you are in a different area from the target of the Fetter, you may not use Maneuvers that have an effect other than Movement. In addition, you may not use Movement Maneuvers upon targets other than yourself or the target of the Fetter.

If a Fetter is driven to a state of Madness that's some big disadvantages you're pulling. At the same time, the game is designed around taking Madness Points at every corner; for example, at the end of every combat round, you must automatically take a point, as well as when your Treasure is damaged or you roll badly. When all Fetters are Mad, your Doll goes Mind Broken. She's gone forever.
>>
>>29464429
>When all Fetters are Mad, your Doll goes Mind Broken. She's gone forever.
Well, maybe that was a bit dramatic. Let me use the wiki to explain it a bit further.

>If all of a Doll's Fetters accumulate 4 Madness Points, and they receive additional Madness Points which they are unable to hold, that Doll enters a Broken-Hearted state. The sisters of a Doll who is Broken-Hearted cannot make Conversation Checks targeted at her (though she can still make checks targeted at them.)
>If all of the sisters become Broken-Hearted, the Session immediately comes to an end. Skip directly to the Ending in the End Phase.

To clarify, your Doll will be alone in her mind screaming at herself trying to get herself back on track and her compatriots will have to try and survive the combat situation just to give her a chance at pulling her own shit back together. Unless the otehr characters have special skills that can bypass that, such as the Tough Love skill described further up. Given how resilient your characters are, it's a lot more probable to get driven insane than get blasted to pieces.

The Madness System is all about dancing at the edge of insanity and going back and forth over that line, taking and losing Madness Points at every opportunity. And the part I like the most is: you lose the points by doing Conversation Checks. cont.
>>
>>29464638
This is pretty to-the-point so I advise you tot ake a look at it too if you're interested in the setting.
http://tlwiki.org/index.php?title=Nechronica:Madness#Conversation_Checks
It's literally laid down as: when you want to lower your overall Madness, fucking TALK to the other Dolls in your group. The better you roleplay each roll and the better you communicate, the more incentive the DM is given to reward you with the removal of Madness Points or tolower the roll requirement at great roleplay to incentivise you further. Which is ironic for a Japanese RPG, given how often I wanted to yell at people in my chinese cartoons to just fucking talk their problems out instead of turning into massive drama llamas but I suppose not only westerners are capable of self-critique.

Since you can only roll for Conversation during combat (and RP outside of combat is usually handled a bit freeform by the GM) this adds another bunch of pressure to the game. It's intense, let me tell you that.
>>
>>29464807
That was that by the way. Anyone want to make characters now?
>>
>>29464638
>The Madness System is all about dancing at the edge of insanity and going back and forth over that line, taking and losing Madness Points at every opportunity.

The whole idea of that really draws me towards both Holic and Psychedelic, the added risk that comes with them is really appealing.
>>
>>29464960
Let's make a second one to go with the first. My apologies in advance for powergaming the fuck out of the parts and skills, but I'm in a campaign and we just saw a non-powergamed sister manage to get herself separated from the group, lose her legs, and go more than a little insane.
>>
>>29465150
LOVE CONQUERS ALL IN THIS GAME, LITERALLY

And it's not exactly powergaming here. Due to the small pool of items there's not really many ways to minmax, from my POV it looks more like you can adapt your Doll to a special way of operating but she will lack in others. And lone Dolls are fucked anyway. When you can't make Conversation Checks you're done for.

But yeah, lets start the pastebin all over!

We got a BAYYYUD girl gentlemen, a bad gird indeedy!

Now you must pick your Position once more. Go by what we have for now, a tragic lesbian willing to atone but unknowing what to atone for and desperate for her heart medication. Get creative.

I'll take Alice / Holic for this build. Lets move on to the next step.

> Stacy - Extra sturdy and reliable. Can defend her sisters the best. 1-1-0.
> Thanatos - CQC weapon user. Skills annihilate enemies. 1-0-1.
> Gothic - Cannibalistic monster. Unarmed CQC, self-heal and debuffs. 0-1-1.
> Requiem - Gunner. Skills improve shooting. 2-0-0.
> Baroque - Mutated beast. Unarmed CQC DPS and regeneration. 0-2-0.

>>
>>29467212
It's a PNPRPG so what happens is up to you. However going by the fluff and the mechanics the only thing that will get raped are minds. It's after the end of the world, these are some of the only things walking the earth still mostly in possession of their mental faculties, most others are either dead or reanimated as mindless zombies, with survivors not even being a given anywhere.
>>
I find this...quite morbidly interesting, OP.

How hard would it be to get into something like this? I've had a little bit of experience with D&D, but have never done, well, anything via online.

And I have to go in about two hours or so to a movie.
>>
>>29467300
Those are all excellent skills, yes indeed. I'm marking them down.
>Healing, Vile Repast, Rip and Tear, Remain Dead

Good. Now we must construct the undead loli in her flesh. First, the basic parts all of them have.

> Head Parts: Brain, Eyeballs, Jaw
> Arm Parts: Fists, Arms, Shoulders
> Body Parts: Spine, Entrails, Entrails
> Leg Parts: Bone, Bone, Feet

In this game only your chunks count, there's no HP. You can be walking around without a head, it doesn't matter for your combat prowess since you're undead anyway. You just lose the boni that you get from having those parts that you lost.

What really matters are the Reinforcement parts. Since we chose Gothic / Stacy, we got one point to spend on Armament, two to spend on Mutation and one to spend on Enhancements, plus one point you get by default that you can throw anywhere. These five you can use to buy two tier 1 Parts, two tier 2 parts and one tier 3 part from wherever you want.

It seems really, really interesting. I like the cute, possibly bubbly mixed with some morbid/grotesque/etc based things. Mindbreak can be good. Having little girls getting fucked over mentally can be amusing or 'oh god why'.

I'd just prefer to stay away from something that's meant to be fetishistic in the fact that they're little girls going to get physically molested because it's pic related for the GM/other players.
>>
>>29467618
Jet Nozzle for Enhancement, Horns and Cracked Flesh for Mutation, Kung Fu and either Coffin or Barbed Wire for Armaments, not sure which is better.
>>
>>29467618
>These five you can use to buy two tier 1 Parts, two tier 2 parts and one tier 3 part from wherever you want.
Is that really how it works? Looking at the rules for that on tlwiki it seems more like Gothic/Stacy would be stuck with only tier 1s for Armament and Enhancement and then 1 and 2 for Mutation. The spare point being used to boost them up to either 1+2 Armament/Enhancement or 1+2+3 Mutation.
>>
>>29467614
It's really damn easy. Char gen is as easy as it can get and about 99% of the content of this game is to be found in the roleplay and the player/GM interaction. The big issue that some people find with this is that the background and the setting is barely elaborated- which it actually is, it just hasn't been translated yet. I don't think it is an issue though, I prefer the freedoms.

In fact, I personally think that the best sort of setting for this game would be the modern day, somewhere deep under a city. The goal is to get to the surface and find your way back home- past thousands of security drones, officers and other monstrosities barring your way out of the secret government facility.

>>29467761

Okay, so for Elizabeth > Clarina we have either 8 or 7. That's Protective or Friendly.
For Clarina > Elizabeth we have 1 or 9. That's Open Hostility or Idolatrous.

You choose.

And for the people worrying about the Dolls being children or predominantly female, this actually does have an in-universe explanation. The reason that they're Dolls is because they've been made by the puppetmasters, the Necromancers. Those guys are implied to be directly involved in the destruction of the world and the fact that everyone's dead only made it even more into their playground. Those kinds of sick fucks really don't need a solid reason not to do things differently, they're motives are nebulous as fuck.

Also, the GM is called the Necromancer in this game, just so you know. Make of that what you will.

Lets start with the battle map. It's divided into five zones along the "distance to flight zone" characteristic. To cite the translation wiki:
>I was extremely liberal with the names of the areas on the battle map, as they're not actually important. The result, hopefully, is that the order is more intuitive to English speakers with a basic knowledge of mythology.
Japanese Literal English
楽園 Paradise Eden
花園 Flower Garden Elysium
煉獄 Purgatory Limbo
地獄 Hell Hades
奈落 Naraka Tartarus

Pic related, though Asylum is a funnily topical mistranslation. Tartarus is basically the hostile spawn zone most of the time and Eden is for fleeing (if you're a pussy) or being a gratuitously long-range sniper. Moving back and forth are movement actuons that cost Action Points. i would explain how that works but I haven't run a game just yet and I'd hate to talk bullshit.

I can give you a rundown on enemy variety though. Overall they come in three flavors:
>Legion
The horde. Slave-zombies or undead soldiers still wielding their rifles. Cannon fodder, every special property your attacks have (such as Dismembering, Blast or Explosive) triple or double the damage you do.
>Horror
This encompasses anything from Dolls gone mad to combat robots. Basically specialized attack dogs, they know only one way of agression- but they may know it very well.
>Savant
This is in effect a doll that is not on your side. It may be a servant of the Nechromancer. May just have their own agenda.
>>
I've got one question. It says this:
>Maneuvers with "Check", "Damage" or "Rapid" timing can be used regardless of one's current Action Points or the current Count if their other requirements are met ("Rapid" Maneuvers must be declared in response to an Action.) However, Maneuvers with these Timings can be used only one time each Round.

Does this mean if you use a specific Rapid action, you can't use it again? Or that you can only use one Rapid action each round? Also, if you have Extra Arms and boost up, say, Attack, do you count as using Extra Arms for the purposes of that limitation, or Attack, or both?
>>
>>29470010
That's an extremely interesting way of doing a battle map.
>>
>>29470010
I think it means that you can only use that one Rapid reaction at that one time. About the latter I'm really not sure.

It's time for me to go to bed now but I'll be beck tomorrow and I'll continue this thread if it's still around. If not, I'll make a new one and carry on making characters to raise awareness of this little gem.

Some previous writefaggotry.

The small family's trail had led from the crucifixion crane yard to the toppled over remains of a tank meant to resist the Necromancers an age ago.

As large as what was once a city block the creaking corpse of metal mirrored its inhabitants. Bundles of the regional Necromancer's abandoned spare parts had coalesced into distinct individuals. Their fragmented intelligences imitating what dimly perceived memory provided as companionship.

A temporary refuge from the clatter of the ravenous Horde outside the tank ruin's rust thinned chassis. The leader of these motile corpse refugees was only barely able to keep the tremors of fear from showing on her four mismatched tool appendages while stating "We are going to make a stand. Rose, you have the beast eyes among us. You will snipe with Tuna, she doesn't have as good night vision but can spot movement very well".

The devices at the end of Thatch's limbs only had enough energy to draw upon one at a time. The drill was chosen with the other three frozen in mid movement in order to best balance Tuna's bolting to the shoulder of Rose.

Thatch's mind replayed memories she was sure weren't hers of military exercises meant to delay and confound the Necromancers relentless minions. Perhaps they were some eternal penance inflicted on the remaining to show the futility of resistance or maybe she did have some soldier's soul bolted onto her like Tuna balancing on Rose.

"Rose, you're going to be aiming the burner. I'll go below with Spur to wake up the house" Thatch barked orders heedless of the echoes, the Horde was this close already and lack of immediate foes wouldn't end their hunt for her family.

Spur's empty eye socket glinted as its the almost fresh counterpart blinked tears of fright "If you're sure Thatch, the house might not want to be woken up". While posessing the orginal connections between limb and torso Spur's past was her namesake as slabs of chemically motivated bone projected dangerously from her slender joints.

These awkward projections allowed her to brace herself and Thatch while moving through the hazardous pit that led to the former tank's brain.

The aroma of preservative caused the opposite of gagging in both of the travelers. The entombed cortex wasn't completely dead and exhaled the narcotic scent of something different. Thatch had to tighten the wrappings beneath her chin to prevent the salivation from endangering Spur's handholds.

The uncomfortably conjoined sniper crew on the tank's gunnery station levels above looked at the inert burner. Rose's scraping voice had it's origin in the aesthetic of whoever fashioned her. Throat opening and closing like stylized petals of reluctantly moving dead flesh she made her objections clear to her passenger Tuna.

Tuna in response uttered a mechanical yawn of nonchalance from the riveted framework that encapsulated her head above eye level. Some in the family thought that Tuna was a beacon left by their creators or worse yet a willing spy for the Necromancers. She didn't care either way but cooperated because there were no legs for her to leave them with.

From the dim horizon there was the milling throng of the Horde. A much older relic of the past they were the earliest and most effective Necromantic foot soldiers before final victory and the debased affection that resulted in the Dolls own genesis.

Thatch made an odd mother figure for the two but even her crude discipline cemented Rose's loyalty. Tuna relented to Rose's petal puckered pestering and swept her sensor suite of networked dead insects in as wide an arc as Rose's shoulder would allow.

The soul that Rose's monstrous eyes were a window into shuddered at the magnified composition of the assembled assialiants huddled against the tank's rotten metal skin below. The plant theme extended to the sinew vines that provided Rose's hands and locomotion and she almost rooted herself to the spot out of fright.

The dull THUNK of Tuna bunting her head from shoulderblade harness and the ensuing digital squawk woke Rose from her overstimulated sensory fugue.

Below in the tank's sarcophagus the Dolls own appetites were beginning to mirror those of the surrounding Horde itself. The blessed perfume of functioning brain matter had summoned an uncanny grace from Spur's usually pain wracked movements and Thatch braced herself against the apocalypse proven glass and inhaled greedily with all four tool limbs whirring in unison.

Awakening to find her tongue licking medulla condensation from the tank brain casing Thatch embarrassedly coiled her snaking mouth limb with a sound not unlike sandy garden hose. Spur was lost to the odor and had curled into a whimpering ball of bone and rags.

Finding some inexplicable atavistic need for order Thatch drilled a hole into her companion's nearest bone slab, the whine and smoke eventually rousing Spur into a conscious whimpering ball.

As if to spite the Dolls' gnawing hunger the brain flickered to merely being comatose instead of on standby. Lazy bubbles moved in slow motion within the shock resistant liquid as mysterious symbols flashed from rust caked surfaces.

Thatch was thankful that Spur was still in the midst of some traumatic episode and not calling for some sort of guidance. Whatever soldier's echo was contained in Thatch's brainmeats it gave her no guide on how to coerce into action its relation floating before her.

"Well at least I can guess why the Horde tracked us here" Thatch sobbed into the crook of a tool arm.

Spur's joint bones which projected outside the pallid skin that attempted to contain them acted as bemoaned conductors of vibration for the mopey one eyed Doll. There was a thrumming below that forced Spur to open her eye and return to harsh reality from the soft focus dream world that she had retreated to.

"So you're up" Thatch emphasized with a tool hand snapping sound in an attempt to hide the tears. Spur nodded and motioned for the unofficial leader to stay silent "I think the house is talking?"

Outside the wrecked last gasp of mankind's defense against the Necromancers the Horde's cannibalistic reenactment of that last slaughter was interrupted by long dormant loudspeakers "CONDITION: OBELAR, THRESH PRINCE ACTIVATED, EXTINCTION LEVEL EVENT IN PROGRESS!".

So, I mentioned a campaign storytime earlier.

Back in early November, one of my IRC buddies (on a different server entirely from suptg) brings up Nechronica's existence and trawls the channel for players. Five of us bite.

After dice and other shenanigans, we wind up with two full-weeaboo things, two reasonable girls with weeaboo names, and one actual good character. Going counterclockwise around the relationship table which I have since lost track of, we had a cannibal catgirl samurai (Iris), a patchwork abomination with no mental brakes, a cache of molotovs, and an anti-tank rifle (Kerata), a zombie-survivalist-style flamethrower-and-molotovs lass (Jinae), a pyromaniac sniper with even MORE goddamn molotovs (Alleah), and a zombie loli clone of pic related (Lauren).

Lauren was mine, and no, I am not sorry. Sometimes even Japan makes cool things.
>>
>>29472663
Now, Kerata's player was indisposed during the first session, so the whole mess opened with the other four of us wandering down a desert road and coming across an old airport.

We go investigate a broken old plane with a big ol' hole ripped in it. There are no corpses in the passenger compartment, but there are three halves of the piloting crew in the cabin. This being the GM's first time running... anything, really... and him not wanting to lay on the Madness rolls too heavily, no dice come down from seeing the trailing entrails. (I would later advise him not to be so sparing with the madness rolls; he hasn't really had the chance to lay them on too hard because most of the first plot arc was not very corpses-'n'-gore-y. We just started the second arc a couple of weeks ago, and one of our remaining sisters has ALREADY started flipping the fuck out.)

There is also some dried brown crap all over the seats. Lauren assumes it's blood, Alleah responds by checking to see how well it burns. It burns pretty well, because it's a blend of machine oil and jet fuel. This will bite us soon.

We head into the airport itself, which is in crappy shape. Lauren searches a newsstand and manages to find an old map, from which we piece together that we're south of Las Vegas. When asked, Lauren - who wants to try to seem knowledgable and trustworthy so that she can stop the sisters from haring off and doing stupid shit - promptly does stupid shit and declares that "It literally means 'The Vegas'." There goes her chance of ever being respected.
>>
>>29472702

Alleah, meanwhile, decides to go clear some of the rubble out of the way of the baggage terminal, and is rewarded for her efforts with a low die roll. She promptly gets a leg broken by a tumbling piece of concrete. Lauren (who, along with Alleah, is part of one of TWO reciprocated Devotion fetter-pairs) promptly comes running to help with her first aid kit, rolls a critical failure, and manages to break Alleah's feet, too. Alleah decides to go back to the plane and grab a new leg off of the copilot's rotten corpse. Without Lauren, thank you very much.

As she's coming back from the plane, though, something starts buzzing VERY LOUDLY in the skies. We panic, Alleah and Iris (who was with her at the time) run/hobble back in, Alleah panics and sets the display plane in the airport's center on fire as a poorly-thought-out distraction, and then all four of us pile into the airport bar/lounge and drop the safety gate. And hid under chairs and tables and shit for good measure.

Then this horrible metal fly-dragon comes crashing through the airport skylight. Then two more follow it. And pretty much eat it right in front of us.

So we flip out and attempt to take them by surprise... only to realize the security gate is down, keeping us from charging the bastiches as planned. And we only have one real ranged attacker. Shit.

Alleah starts taking potshots at the big bastards, who turn around and lumber at us. They attack the gate, we attack them through the gate, and between Alleah firing tons of sniper rounds and Lauren slicing and dicing with monofilament - which, by the way, is an incredible part for characters with Armamaents 3 - we have them severely wounded by the time the gate comes down. Jinae and Iris immediately mop them up before they can get any hits in on us with their freaky circular chainsaw mouthparts. Session over, whee.

(More after I get the next session typed up.)

I'm surprised this doesn't have a manga, an anime, a visual novel, an erotic visual novel, and the usual phletora of bullshit that surrounds anything made in japan. I did a bit of reading and I can't help but think that the necessity of making them little girls just wasn't there, unless you count being japanese as a reason.

Haven't actually played with it yet, but it seems pretty grokable, and the theme is oddly enough not the worse thing I have seen.

First impressions give a 6/10, but I still need to buy it and play it with some buddies.

>Necromancers in a ruined post apocalyptic world piloting biomechanical mechs made of bone and flesh fighting over the last bit of resources left.

Anyways, that small burst of inspiration aside, I had a scenario prepped for Nechronica years ago but I never had the balls to actually run something in it. In short, it was kind of like System Shock 2 in an O'Neil style space colony. Full of mystery, mindfuck, and horrifying chase sequences in vacuum. I should grab a wild group of weeaboos and resurrect it one day.

Anyhow, we've got two characters till now: Elizabeth Juliette Cooke the flame-thrower toting tank that leads the group and Clarina starring as the sweet-hearted close combat monster in charge of feasting on the flesh of the undead.

If anyone wants to stay with me and round off the group with more characters, I'd need a name and a roll of 1d10 plus seven by you for their age. From then on, we can go work through the character creation again.

Alright, next step: Fragments of Memory.

>Every Doll has an identity. Or rather, every little girl had an identity- before she gruesomely died in the wars that ended this world. Now, every Doll made from one of them dimly remembers things from the past- but much too little. The Nechronica TL website features only 10 Fragments of Memory which is of course not nearly enough. I managed to acquire a partially translated PDF which features at least rough translations of the 100 that there should be, you can work off of those. You can load it off the link in the index.

I need two d100s for the fragments.

>There is something you must have. Without it, there's no hope for you. How frustrating. Particularly that you can't remember what it was.

Alright, I think his personality is pretty clear by now. He's looking for something he forgot, he likes the cash and doesn't like being bound. Basically a depressive Harry Enfield, there's even zombies around to boot.

Now you must pick your position.

>>
>>29485864

Holic seems like it'd fit for him. He's looking for something, after all.
>>
>>29485864
Those fragments and that premonition can only possibly end in Holic.
>>
>>29485905
>>29485934
I'd recommend you to look at the Premonition table. In effect, ALL of them look like they'd lead straight to Holic.
http://tlwiki.org/index.php?title=Nechronica:Doll_Creation#Premonition_Table
All of the dolls have lost their memory and are looking to uncover their past. Holic just, well, really put the emphasis on the SELFISH drive to uncover it.

That said, you all voted for Holic. Are you certain y/n?
>>
>>29485969

That's mostly why I went with Holic. A guy that remembers money and that he doesn't like being bound sounds closest to Holic than any of the other positions.
>>
>>29486036
Holic it is. Moving on to the Classes. You pick two: main class and subclass.

> Stacy - Extra sturdy and reliable. Can defend her sisters the best. 1-1-0.
> Thanatos - CQC weapon user. Skills annihilate enemies. 1-0-1.
> Gothic - Cannibalistic monster. Unarmed CQC, self-heal and debuffs. 0-1-1.
> Requiem - Gunner. Skills improve shooting. 2-0-0.
> Baroque - Mutated beast. Unarmed CQC DPS and regeneration. 0-2-0.
> Romanesque - Cold dancers more metal than meat. High dodge and precision. 0-0-2.
> Psychedelic - ESP. Most skills cost Madness Points. 0-0-1.
>>
>>29486075

What do the numbers mean after the class description?
>>
>>29486075

Main Class
Romanesque.
Need to be fast to grab the money.

Subclass
Gothic

Because.....
Need to get beat up people so hard that they turn into money?
>>
>>29486161
Excuse me, I should have explained. What class you pick influence what sort of Parts you get to buy later on to kit out your Doll. The numbers tell youf rom what categories you get to pick from in the order "Armament - Mutation - Enhancement"., which are Weapons, Flesh-grafts and Deus-Ex-style Augmentations in that order.

>>29486193
I'll take this in case anyone else has nothing to add.
>>
>>29486242

Ah, I see.

I'm all for Romanesque/Gothic.

Since they're 0-0-2 and 0-1-1 does that mean there'll be no weapon parts for this character? Not a problem since Gothic is unarmed, but I was just wondering if I'm beginning to get the system.
>>
>>29486297
Every character gets one extra that they can spend on whichever they like. Also, without a fair bit of supporting skills and whatnot, Gothic for second by itself isn't great in terms of supplying killing power. I personally vote for Romanesque/Thanatos. Instantaneous seems like a fitting pick.
>>
>>29486297
Weapons are not strictly necessary. They're basically attack implements that you hold in your hands, while the other two categories give you attack implements mounted inside or on your body. They do have less ranged weapons on a whole though.

>>29486342
Okay, so Romanesque is universally agreed. Thanatos really jacks up the close combat possibilities while Gothic is more of a passive, debufing skillset. I'll go ahead and make him into the ravenous Holic that you expect him to be and pick that Thanatos.
>Romanesque / Thanatos

The next we have to choose is the Skills. I'll leave you to it:
>Pick one skill out of your Position, two out of your main class and one out of your subclass. You may not pick one of the marked Special Skills unless both of your Classes are the same.

http://tlwiki.org/index.php?title=Nechronica:Holic

http://tlwiki.org/index.php?title=Nechronica:Thanatos
>>
>>29486391
My suggestions would be Drawn to Tartarus, Instantaneous, Waltz, not sure about the last one. Sort of a rapidly closing in, close range defensive offense, if it makes sense? One's Many Charms does what exactly? Lower the cost of all Arm and Leg actions? Or just the movements, mistyped?
>>
>>29486391

Insane Swiftness seems like it's pretty decent, at a glance. What exactly does "Carnage" do? All it says on what it does is "Support 3".

For Romanesque, Dance of Death and...One's Many Charms, maybe?

And for Thanatos...Judgment or Queen of the Underworld, depending on which is better in your opinion
>>
>>29486487

Instantaneous seems like it'd be good too. Really pretty unfamiliar with what works best though.
>>
>>29486490
Support adds it's value to the relevant roll. So, if you used it for an attack, you'd get +3 to that, which is pretty sizable on the 1d10 system it uses.
>>
>>29486510

Insane Swiftness is not bad, only reason why it's debatable is because it requires you to have full Madness on a Fetter, which you generally don't want. Admittedly, Drawn to Tartarus is a lot weaker, but has no penalties. Carnage is pretty damn good though.

Instantaneous basically makes it so that nothing can interrupt or weaken (nor strengthen, unfortunately) that particular attack, only leaving soak to interfere with it.

Queen of the Underworld is useful if you want to stand in the middle of a Legion.
>>
>>29486515
>>29486580

With all of this in mind...

Carnage seems good for Holic

Dance of Death and One's Many Charms for Romanesque

As for Thanatos...eh. I'm really unsure. I'll leave that up to the others.

FOLLY. On average, there's five lurkers for every poster on 4chan, discounting really really slow boards.

>Holic: Carnage
>Romanesque: Dance of Death, One's Many Charms
>Thanatos: Drama of Death
Alright. Now you get to actually build your shota. First, though, your Basic parts.

> Head Parts: Brain, Eyeballs, Jaw
> Arm Parts: Fists, Arms, Shoulders
> Body Parts: Spine, Entrails, Entrails
> Leg Parts: Bone, Bone, Feet

Since you have 1-0-3, you'll be in these two Reinforcement Part branches.

In this game only your chunks count, there's no HP. You can be walking around without a head, it doesn't matter for your combat prowess since you're undead anyway. You just lose the boni that you get from having those parts that you lost.

http://tlwiki.org/index.php?title=Nechronica:Armaments
http://tlwiki.org/index.php?title=Nechronica:Enhancements

Since we chose Romanesque / Thanatos, we got one point to spend on Armament and three to spend on Enhancements, plus one point you get by default that you can throw anywhere. These five you can use to buy two tier 1 Parts, two tier 2 parts and one tier 3 part from wherever you want.
>>
>>29486785

Cyborg for Tier 3, from Enhancements.

For the two tier 2's, either Drill/Zombie Bomb (depending on how good the bomb really is) and Boost.

For the tier 1s, Bolt Head, perhaps? Or Voice Effect...depending on what a mutual conversation check is. For the other tier 1, Chainsaw.

How is it determined, by the way, what tiers you can get? And how many?
>>
>>29486880
http://tlwiki.org/index.php?title=Nechronica:Doll_Creation#Reinforcement_Parts
Here's there's a chart for it. Tier 3 items are intentionally rare. A conversation check is important for those:
>>29464429
>>29464638
>>29464807
reasons. They allow you to iron out Madness Points, which is pretty much the only way to do it unless you want to spend the XP you earn on lowering them.

Oh and whoops, I forgot, you DON'T get a fifth point, only four, and one t2 part needs to go to. This one is pre-determined:
>Boy
>Tier 2 Mutations
>+1 to your conversation checks

Excuse me for forgetting that. I'll leave you guys to your choices again.
>>
>>29486991

Oh right, forgot about the boy mutation. As for the conversation checks, I know what those are. I was just wondering...what's the difference between a conversation check and a mutual conversation check?

Still gonna go with Cyborg for T3. Drill for T2, and of course Boy for the other T2. Still not sure if there's a difference between mutual conversation and ordinary conversation...thinking about it, conversation checks can't be used during combat normally, right? But since Voice Effect is rapid...it COULD be used during combat? If so, my vote on T1 is for it and Chainsaw; it seems like it'd be useful if, for instance, right before combat, you went into madness and wanted out of it.
>>
>>29445953
What about a zombie trap that is actually constructed to act as a human trap?
>>
>>29487092
There's no humans anymore, it's a land of death and death alone.

>>29487043
Voice checks can ONLY be used in combat. Mutual conversation checks let both sides strike off Madness Points and not just one of them. Outside of it you just roleplay normally and get rewarded by the GM for it.
But alright, lets tag this down.

> Head Parts: Brain, Eyeballs, Jaw
> Arm Parts: Fists, Arms, Shoulders, Chainsaw, Drill
> Body Parts: Spine, Entrails, Entrails, Cyborg, Boy
> Leg Parts: Bone, Bone, Feet

And there we go. Though thinking about it, 17 isn't really the age to still be called a shota. Maybe there's some animu age thing going on where they still look like elementary school kids.

So, what to do now? Didn't someone want to do storytiem?
>>
>>29487307

Heh, you put Clarina instead of Marius Godding, OP.
>>
>>29487339
That's what I get for ctrl+c ctrl+v I suppose. Eh, the spirit is what counts, and the numbers.
>>
>>29487215

In a game of this I ran my necromancer was five different people from before the war all merged into a single body.

Essentially a head with five face on it and five brains in it. All mounted on a normal body.

Sort of like the Quintessons except flesh instead of machinery. Each time one of the brains took control of the body the head would turn and his face would face the front. They'd usually put on a coat or something to signify their identity/position too.
So a suit jacket for the politician, military dress jacket for the general and so on.

It was funny when the head would keep spinning cos different brains wanted their say.
>>
>>29487345

True enough. What exactly would storytiem entail?

…an undead human is still, you guessed it, a human. C'mon guys. Get your heads in the game.
>>
>>29487528

Will do. I looked over the Psychedelic class, by the way, and was wondering...what exactly are Favor Points? And more specifically, how can classes use them to gain the skills of other classes (as the Psychedelic page mentions this can't be done for Psychedelic skills)?
>>
>>29487619
Favor Points are basically your XP. You get 2 for accomplishing Karma set out for you by the GM, basically tasks you get each session. One is by default finding more Fragments of Memory, and he can assign one or two, either at the start of session, or at the start of the Battle Phase. The amount of Favor Points needed to buy stuff is under Combat on the wiki, for some reason.
>>
>>29487614
Most of the undead are zombies. Calling zombies humans only causes trouble. No, they're not, they're braindead and lust for human flesh. The Dolls are neither, they're Dolls. Not flesh-hungry but also without pulse. God know swhat will happen once they catch sight of a normal, living human, maybe they want to tear him to shreds and feed on the bits immediately. It may be good that they don't have a way of meeting them, given that they've been all wiped out.

And either way, this discussion was sparked by the line
>What about a zombie trap that is actually constructed to act as a human trap?
Which only makes sense in the "wants to feed on your flesh" sense.

Name: Lily
AAD: 9
Fragments of Memory: Separation (86), God (41)
Premonitions: 10 Happiness
Treasure: Accessory (thinking some sort of sparkly cross)
Position: Court
Class: Psychedelic / Stacy

Skills:
>Court: Restraint
>Psychedelic: Twist of Fate, Distorted Power
>Stacy: Remain Dead
Parts:
> Head Parts: Brain, Eyeballs, Jaw
> Arm Parts: Fists, Arms, Shoulders, Anti-Tank Rifle
> Body Parts: Spine, Entrails, Entrails, Heart, Scales
> Leg Parts: Bone, Bone, Feet, Tail

I think I did this right...hopefully. Just for funsies rolled for her Fetters towards the 3 that have been made so far too. Attached to Elizabeth, Friendly to Clarina, Rival of Marius. Also just decided to put what her treasure Fetter is below the Premonition.

She's going to go crazy reaaally fast.
>>
>>29488074

Mostly? It seems like they'd be interesting to RP out. Having a heart and a tail. Plus I feel having high action points would help, due to the cost of the Anti-Tank Rifle. As for the Anti-Tank Rifle, I'unno. It feels like it'd make sense for a Court/Psychedelic/Stacy to stay in the back and pick things off with a big weapon.

>>29488081

Any particular reason? The only difference between it being a main and subclass is that as a subclass I'd only be able to pick a single skill from it.
>>
>>29488159
Makes sense. I'd look at Antenna too though, would help stay sane a lot.
>>
>>29488159
>The only difference between it being a main and subclass is that as a subclass I'd only be able to pick a single skill from it.
That's the thing, just about every skill in that tree ends with yourself taking Madness points. Maining that is asking for trouble.
>>
>>29488154

Is it due to the fetters at the end? Because other than them, the only thing that would make her accumulate more madness than normal would be Twist of Fate. Restraint is to stave off bad madness checks, while Remain Dead is to help heal broken parts sustained by it.

>>29488207

Mmh...good point. Antenna does seem pretty good, especially for a Psychedelic.
>>
>>29488233

Actually, from what I can tell, only 2 do. Twist of Fate and Embrace of Souls. 3 if you focused solely on Psychedelic, but I doubt such a focused approach would be good.
>>
>>29487692
Human =/= person.

A sapient undead human is a person. A feral undead human is a zombie.
>>
>>29488256
Pure Psychedelic would be VERY hazardous, seeing as you wind up with only three reinforcement parts that way. It's already plenty harsh enough to drop down to four parts by taking it as one of your classes; the rewards for doing it twice just plain can't match the cost, thanks to the horrendous backlash on Psyche's double-only special skill.

Nyarlathotep is the main antagonist of persona 2.

persona 2 is pretty much CoC with stands.
>>
>>29488616
Well, the thing to note about Vortex of Destruction is that, while costly, it's really really really damn powerful. You not only destroy any Legions in the battle, you also get to chose 4 parts for everyone else. What that basically means is that you can destroy all the best weapons and abilities of your enemies, while only targeting the weakest and least useful of your team.

It's costly as hell and dangerous, sure, but it by itself is enough to completely level the playing field, or just simply cripple every opponent in combat.
>>
>>29488882
While interesting, I'd probably not force players to do that. For one, most everyone wants to do their own character (unless they require premades), and to boot, some of those characters just aren't that good.
>>
Oh shit, a nechronica thread. I made one a few days ago but it died quickly, so this is quite a surprise.

Anyone care to rate my skill/part choices?

Position: Holic

Class: Romanesque

Skills: Carnage, Battle Maiden, Clockwork, One's Many Charms*

Reinforcements: Armed 1 ; Mutated 0; Enhanced 5

Head Parts: Brain, Eyeballs, Jaw, Adrenaline
Arm Parts: Fists, Arms, Shoulders, Monofilament, Wire Reel
Body Parts: Spine, Entrails, Entrails, Energy Tube, Steel Bones, Cyborg
Leg Parts: Bone, Bone, Feet, Mirror

Initial Deployment: Elysium

*I'd like to get some explanation on One's Many Charms. What does it do exactly, reduce the AP cost of Arm/Leg basic parts, or all parts in that area? I'm really clueless.
>>
>>29488958

I think One's Many Charms reduces the cost of any parts attached to legs and arms. So, for instance, an Anti-Tank Rifle, which usually costs 4, would only cost 3.
>>
>>29488958
>Oh shit, a nechronica thread. I made one a few days ago but it died quickly, so this is quite a surprise.
I kept it alive. Gotta get shit done if you want it to run. I'll probably do another sometime tomorrow or something.
>>
>>29488958
I'm curious about One's Many Charms too. It's really unclear. As for skills and parts, it seems quite alright, though perhaps a tad too focused on Action Points. You have, what, 14? With that many, you probably want to start in Limbo to get to use as much of that as possible before the enemy, and then retreat/use defenses to weather whatever attacks they can muster after getting their shit kicked in.

I'm personally a bit unsure of Energy Tube, the cost of it compared to the 1 extra Action Point of Reflexes is kind of a tossup.
>>
>>29488918
Persona is LITERALLY CoC with stands.

They couldn't get the rights to a Jojo game, so they made one anyways. Only with the SMT dev team instead.

>>
>>29489271
Is it ?
>>
>>29489210

Because it would be so depressing. I mean fuck, these are little kids, reanimated as gruesome monsters, walking on the edge of insanity.

They exist in a bleak, grimdark world, broken shells of their former selves.

I just... it is too much just to think about it.

It is like DEM FEELS THE GAME- TEARJERKING
>>
>>29489336

Fair enough. I can respect that it's not for everyone. And it does seem like there'd be a lot of feels. But still, it sounds too interesting for me to just pass it by.
>>
>>29489336
It is, it really is. I think the general feel of the game is supposed to be- what was it again? The gme has a second subtitle, not The Long Long Sequel, it goes something like Flowers at the End of the World. That's what the game is supposed to be about I think, finding a little spark of hope even in the biggest wasteland. The characters, being what you'd assume to be innocent children, twisted to brutal war-machines, only strengthen this feeling.

If I wouldn't know for a fact that this is made by the same guy who made Maid RPG, Zettai Reido and Golden Sky Stationary I'd even begin to argue that it's some sort of cynically excercised tearjerking routine. But it isn't, this is just how that guy works.

The Binder o' the Gods is a project I've been working on where I find as many rpgs as I can that can be condensed into 20ish front-and-back pages, and put them in a large binder. That way. a group can show up, ask me for a tone or setting or style, I can flip through, give them possibilities for dicerolling systems (I.e. "do you want d6, d100, or a full complement of polyhedra?"), they tell me, I flip to a specific section and hand out character sheets.

tldr:create a massive collection of games I can run quickly and easily for any group

As I said further up in the thread, you can just shift the age up a bit and change the "Boy" mutation to some random empathy generator, making gender freely choosable. Then it just becomes teenage undead roaming the land trying to find a purpose in life. Kinda like Warm Bodies.

The Danbooru gallery is also filled with teenage or adult characters so it seems like we're not the only ones having these thoughts.
