You are Fritz Heller, and your past has caught up with you. You fought the alien invaders, the space elves of the Sidarxi Empire, in the 1940s. You were a power armor operator, every the vanguard and ever the rearguard in the desperate battle of Operation Samson. From Stalingrad to Hamburg, you trudged on as the mighty army was whittled down. In the freezing winter of 1944, you escaped the nuclear fires of Hamburg and made your way to America as a renegade.

The year is now 1950. For several years, the aliens have begun the colonization and subjugation of the conquered earth. However, underground workshops and factories have hummed with vigor, producing arms and armors for one last push against the occupying forces of the Sidarxi Empire and the human collaborators of the ISF. In June, the revolution began. As for you, you haven't been idle. You've gotten yourself into a web of intrigue with a Sidarxi conspiracy working against their brethren (though not especially for the good of humanity). Things have just gotten interesting, in the Chinese sense of the word, now that you've stolen an experimental suit of alien power armor.
>>
You wake up and everything hurts. The armor is still on, and you somehow pop the breastplate and crawl out. Your jacket and trousers are shredded; you shoes have fared a little better.

“I see you're now awake. How are you feeling” says Vetrina, returning to that same arrogantly happy voice. You honestly preferred her desperate and rattled. She doesn't look that good either, with a number of scrapes and bruises.

A headache slams into you like a bullet.

“I've been worse,” you say.

“Thank you,” she says with what might be humility, “for saving my life, and agreeing to help find my sister.”

“You're welcome.”

You turn to her, a motion that makes your body feel like a creaking, rusted gate.

[x] “I need to know everything about this suit.”
This suit is all that stands between us being alive and us being dead, and we're no good to our sister dead.

Besides, we don't even know if this thing requires fuel, or if it uses batteries, or what.
>>
[X] “I need to know everything about this suit.”
>>
“I need to know everything about the armor? For example, how much juice do I have to keep it running?”

“It's battery powered, but you can charge it from any standard Sidarxi outlet. There should be a cable that you can hook up to your shoulder.”

“So, how long does it run?”

“Battery life is between 500-1000 hours, depending on how much you use its stealth and how much you use the shield. They're also distributed between the armor and sandwiched between two layers of synthetic muscle so that one hit can't knock out the power supply.”

You do some mental math and reply, “Between 20 to 40 days before I need to plug myself into the wall?”

“That's about right.”

“Can I dial down the strength enhancement? Whatever it was set to did a number on my muscles.”

“I think so, but you'd want me handling that. I'm not sure.”

“So, how much does it weigh?”

“It's about 70 kilos.”

Your eyes almost bulge out of their sockets in surprise, just like an American cartoon, when you hear that one. That's about half the weight of a regular armor. You look at the scorch marks on the lifeless suit.

“What kind of hits can it take. Specifically?”

“The shield is weak, but that's because it's magnifying your miniscule human psychic potential. The shield seems like it can take a few regular bolts. That said, the armor is rated to protect from every human weapon smaller than a 20mm high-explosive. It can even stop those, but the squishy thing inside still doesn't do well. In terms of our weapons, it can stop all rifles-class bolts, but the crew served weapons will cut through the armor alone.”

“Any built in weapons?”

“I'm afraid not. Anything you want, you'll have to acquire,” she says.

“Can you change the settings on the strength, maybe limit to 2x? Can I swap between them?”

“Hold on there,” she says, pulling a covered port on the back of the armor and plugging a cable from her tablet into the port.

You look over her shoulder as her fingers dance across the screen. The Sidarxi letters fly across the screen in a bizarre formatting which seems to involve a lot of gibberish, indents, and brackets. It now seems to be prompting questions.

“There you go, Fritz,” she says, some minutes later, “It's currently set in 2x auto-feedback, like one of your suits, but if you tell it to increase it's power, it will do so. You'll have to set the command the next time you operate it.”

“How did all this happen, this purge?” you ask.

She looks at you, then glances away to weigh her options.

“I don't know if these are even the same faction. They might be my sister's enemies or they might be another party upset about all this meddling. If you got into orbit and further beyond your backwater world, you might find the source of this.”

[x] Inquire further about the world beyond the stars
"Yezrina very briefly mentioned other galactic states and that while Earth is on a strategic hyperspace lane junction, both of you have said that it's not critical.
"What are the other powers out there, and could what Yezrina's faction doing be considered treasonous?"
After that, >[x] Get moving

>both of you have said that it's not critical
>>
>>29439939
I thought that both Yezrina and Vetrina said that the hyperspace route that Earth is on is on the borders of the Empire and that it's not considered critical, just strategically important.
If it was critical then I would expect there to be a fully-armed battlestation and fleet to be keeping the junction secure from other interstellar states.

“With the big picture, beyond Earth, how important is this planet really?”

“It's a habitable planet that sits at a hyperspace lane. I suppose that the really important thing about it is the whole system, but it's habitable and sits an important location.”

“So, why is it important?”

“It's a disturbingly close major hyperspace junction that sits between our Empire and those damn Redjackets,” she says.

“Who?”

“They're another empire.”

“So it there a fleet above use?”

“Not in it's entirety; you can thank the other powers for that. However, due to its convenience, a great amount of trade has been flowing while we've been establishing ourselves on the planet. It's a sideshow to orbital operations.”

“This just leaves me even more confused.”

“Wait until you have some perspective.”

“Let's get going, then.”

“Can you patch me into their radio?”

She looks as though she's about to correct you about your terminology but decides that it would be a wasted effort.

“Get back in their and take off your helmet,” she commands.

You acquiesce, discarding your jacket and handing it's contents to Vetrina. You climb back in to the corpselike armor, like a soul returning home. It's already started to smell like you. As it powers on, you feel it squeezing you firmly. You hold the helmet and let Vetrina plug another cord into your armor. You don't want to wait, so you pick her up against your protests and place her on your shoulders. With the suit, you barely notice her way. You hear the rapid-paced Sidarxi chatter as you wander around looking for some sort of vehicle. You do find a rusted bike, but it collapses under your weight.

You start walking towards the bunker, following a map inside the armor that Vetrina has displayed on her tablet. You aren't quite sure how that works, but you accept it.

“Fritz, there's a problem,” she says late in the afternoon.

“What is it?”

“I've heard some encrypted channels talking about securing a high value prisoner. Yezrina told me some of the terms they use. I think that they're taking her into orbit, but this high value prisoner is going to New Orleans.”

Even if it's not Yezrina, any enemy of this faction is a potential friend of us. At this point we have to assume that the Earth is going to either be glassed or virus-bombed to drive the human race to extinction, and there's nothing we can do to stop it. Our only chance for survival is to catch a ride off-world, and for that we need Yezrina.

Yeah, it's a known bug in the image upload script. Two people post an image at the same time, the images get swapped. It's not common, but with the number of posts and images that get uploaded, it's bound to happen to a couple people a day.

She starts talking into the radio, or whatever they call their magic radio that is, for all intents and purposes, a radio.

“Lay down and pretend like you're injured.”

“Are we talking 'grasping at the void where my guts used to be' injured or 'alas, heat exhaustion' injured. I've seen both and can do a convincing impression of either.”

Vetrina isn't quite sure how to take it, but eventually decides to laugh. You're not kidding; you've seen too many boys stumble around like that, screaming for their mothers before collapsing dead.

Within a few minutes, as the sun is sinking below the horizon, a flyer hovers over, making ripples in the grass before descending. The doors open and you notice that people inside do not look like medics.

You charge, bursting forth. Almost instantly, you suffer a fusillade of fire. It should have been scary; your old armor never would have withstood such an assault. Your shields eat another hit and your vision blurs with the optical distortion.

You immiately punch the nearest Sidarxi straight through his armored faceplate. The plate buckles, taking him down at once. You use him as a human shield while you steal his knife. The alien takes a few blasts from his comrades as you rush forward. The next alien is down as you stab her to death. Wherever she defends, you switch hands and stab her. She hits the dirt quickly.

That's two down. How many were there? You didn't get a good look.

You feel the heat of another blast wash over your back and you wheel around. You should have noticed, but you are having a hard time getting used to how its field of vision works. These sensors intruding into your vision are foreign.

One of your attackers is holding Vetrina with a knife at her throat and a pistol pointed at you. You see another corpse of an attacker; it looks like she took one down. This one seems to be the last.

The soldier is armored and has his helmet on, right? Normally I would say right into the pistol's barrel, but our strength is boosted to the point where we can through a knife through a Sidarxi military-grade helmet faceplate.
So right into the Sidarxi's face. Since Sidarxi have two vulnerable eyes just like a human, I'm going to assume that they also have a protective reflex when something goes for their face.
Either the soldier tries to block and we can rush him, or he doesn't (trusting in his faceplate holding) and the knife goes into his face.

You calm your breathing and focus on nothing but his face. Nothing matters except that your knife implants itself squarely through that faceplate. The pistol points at you, merely threatening.

On the count of three. Three, two, one.

In one movement, you draw the knife and throw it. It seems to spin slowly, as if underwater, as it tumbles through the air. It slices through Vetrina's hair, scrapes its tip across the faceplate, and buries itself through the metal. In an instant, he drops dead.

“Vetrina, are you alright?”

She's bleeding from her throat as the knife slipped across her neck as he fell.

“I've been better,” she says softly.

“Not now,” you say, looking at the flyer which is beginning to take off. You grab her and jump into the vehicle without a moments hesitation. You rush to the cockpit, tearing through the hatch, and kill the pilot. When you return, Vetrina has already bandaged her neck.

“Let's take a trip to New Orleans,” you say.

No, the problem is that we don't know if this high value prisoner is Yezrina or not.
Vetrina said that Yezrina would probably be taken off-world, but this prisoner is being transferred to New Orleans.
So we don't know if this is Yezrina or someone else in her faction.

>>
>>29450949
Yeah. I don't know why going through the bunker wasn't chosen. It's not like she'd be the only 'high value prisoner'.
