You are Gertrude Pool, Sophomore Class President and new commander of Lafayette Girls Academy’s revived Tankery Team.

“Get up, Trudy!”

“Noooooo…”

“Today’s the Pep Rally! Come on! You can’t be that tired from yesterday!”

“Fuck off…”

“Goddamn it! Get up!”

“Come back when I’m awake.”

Trudy is on your bed, trying desperately to pull your covers off. Unfortunately for her, you’re pretty much a tree standing by the water.

“Come on! We’re going to be late!”

You groan, looking at the alarm clock. “What time is it?” You look over at the clock. 6 O’Clock. “The fuck, Kitten… I wake up at this time.”

“Well wake up now!”

“No.”

Kitten stops pulling, letting you fling yourself back into the mattress. “Do I have to bring your staff in here?” she asks.

“Do what you must. Let me at least wake of my own accord.” You groan again, your head spinning a little. “God, studying is not my strong suit.”

Kitten walks over to your closet and pulls out a uniform for you. “You’re talking as if you have a hangover. Now, what are you wearing today?”

“Get me the Tankery Uniform, Trudy…”

Kitten stands you up and pushes you to the shower. “Couple of things, let’s get you showered first, then I’ll tell you why my name isn’t Trudy.”

“I need coffee.”

“You don’t drink coffee.”

Kitten gets busy on scrubbing you down and washing your hair. You’re normally not this tired in the morning, but yesterday REALLY did a number on your stamina. At least you don’t actually have to do things in Gym class anymore. Plus, you at least got your English project done.

Your shower’s finished up, and Kitten proceeds to start dressing you like a squire to his knight. “Leg up please.” You lift up your leg slightly as Kitten gets your Tankery uniform miniskirt on. “Arms up.” You raise your arms as Kitten gets your shirt on.

“Kitten,” you say.

“Yes?” She gets your jacket on and starts buttoning it up.

“Why did you check on me today?”

Kitten shrugs. “Eh, just worried a bit. Besides, I think it’s time I woke you up for once.”

“This’ll probably only happen once then we go back to our usual routine, huh?”

Kitten chortles. “Yeah, sure.” She dusts off the jacket once she finishes the buttons. “Looking spiffy, Commander.”

You nod. “Thanks, what about you?”

She shrugs. “Eh, I’ll change into mine at school.”

You both head to the door, and once it opens, the sun hits you like a death ray. You lift your hand to shade your eyes, squinting. Wasn’t this sunny yesterday. Fuck you, sun. Inconsistent piece of shit.

You look around. “Where’s my staff?” Kitten taps your shoulder and points down. You find your staff all sitting around your Sherman. They wave at you.

“Hi, President!” Nancy waves at you from the Loader’s hatch. “Sleep well?”

“Eh, I suppose I could be better.” You walk up to the Sherman and pat it on the side. You notice something on the turret side though. “What’s that?”

Lisa smiles. “Like it? It was Nancy’s idea.”

Painted on the side of the turret is a black heart, on the right side of it, Lafayette’s signature Fleur-de-lis.

Nancy smiles. “Painted it myself! It’s so the other teams can tell us apart in case we run into other tanks like us.”

You nod, smiling. “That’s great, Nancy. Other teams come up with something like this?”

Lisa shakes her head. “Not yet. But they’ll probably come up with something soon.” She checks the time. “Anyway, we might as well get to school.”

“Right,” You climb up onto Cupid the Sherman, finding the cast hull a bit less grippy than you remember it. You stand atop the turret then shout, “Mount up!” Everyone takes their respective positions, and the Sherman then powers up into the street.

You’re now a bit more awake as the subtle vibration of the suspension hits your ass. Gotta say though, it’s a smoother ride than it used to be. You look down at Lisa. “So, Lisa. Ready for our little flashmob today?”

Lisa nods. “Sure thing.” She says, “We’re meeting up with our team before classes, just to remind you.”

“I know, I know. Wonder what Cathy’s thought up of.”

Nancy says, “I hope it’s catchy.”

“I’m not! Don’t want no crappy showtunes in my head the rest of the month,” says Lisa. “Jeez.”

“Lisa,” says Nancy, “It’s quite a thing when you have a cheer! You should at least be able to memorize it based off how catchy it is!”

“Ugh…” says Lisa as she bangs her forehead into the driver’s periscope.

“Relax, Lisa,” you say. “Nothing wrong with a nice little dance and cheer. Why, I’m sure Kitten is-“

Kitten says, “No.”

“Whatever,” you say. “Regardless of what we do, this is for the Tankery Program. So chins up, stiff upper lips as they say in Great Britain.”

You turn out of the Commander’s hatch to find your tank getting gawked at by passing students. They take pictures on their phones, text their friends, etc. Social media stronk. You arrive at the parking lot to see the rest of the team, hanging out in the parking lot by their tanks.

You park in next to the Churchill IV, Chuck.

“… and sway your hips like so.” Cathy keeps your hands on your hips and moves them to the beat of the cheer.

“Alright,” You nod.

“Now you’re getting it!” she says.

“Great!” You snap your finger. “Real hell of a thing you’ve done, Cathy.”

“Oh, it’s nothing,” she waves you off. You both look at the rest of the team, busily practicing the cheer. Kitten especially looks very unamused, as do the delinquents, and Wendy. You roll your eyes. They’ll come around. “So, what are you doing in your Tankery uniform?” she asks.

“Oh, just decided to advertise,” you say. “I think I can get it through on the justification that I am spreading school spirit.” You check the time. You still got a bit of time before class. Anything you want to do?

“Remember, the signal is a whistle!”

You say goodbye to your team and head on over to the Library. Not much to do other than read a nice book. Book in general being Achtung, Panzer!

> Achtung, Panzer!: Progress: 40%

You yawn as you put the book down. You inspect your uniform a little. Still pristine and clean. You remember that you need to wear it tomorrow for the dinner at Adams. You wonder what British cuisine is like. Probably fish and chips.

ALARM

Time for classes. You head on over to math class. Although you haven’t gotten the extra credit assignment done yesterday, you’re at least getting this classes’ assignments done. The math problems don’t come to you as easily as you think they would, but the Professor at least is good enough to tell you which number goes where and how to make sure it stays there.

English class as well goes on relatively smoothly. Being the Student Council President you are, you decide to go first for your presentation to get it out of the way. You concisely present your points on powerpoint, improvise a bit of dialogue, and even build a greater report with the audience, who applaud you at the end. The Professor even says, “It’s quite clear you’ve done some work on this presentation, Miss Pool.”

Yeah. SMOOTH CRIMINAL.

Chemistry class goes by relatively uneventfully. More periodic table memorization and atomic number placement. Nothing too exciting.

However, what is exciting is the fact that with lunch, EVERYONE is going there now. You’re immediately swept up in the mob, unable to make heads or tails of anyone.

Oh god, the lines are going to be KILLER.

“Nancy!” You shout over the sea of students.

“Hi, President!” Nancy waves some several meters away. You push through the crowd of students, and manage to get to Nancy, who has changed out into her Tankery Uniform. “Crowded lunch today.”

You nod weakly. “There’s so many people! We’ll never get lunch at this rate.”

“Hmhm. I prepared for this,” She holds up a couple of paper bags. “I brought some leftovers from dinner last night! Chicken rice curry with some nice leafy greens and-“ She holds up a bottle of milk. “Milk!”

You stand there, dumbfounded. “Nancy, there’s times when I realize that you’re way more on top of things than I am.”

The two of you push through the crowd and find yourself at the usual table. You meet Lisa, Ramirez, and Kitten, all wearing their uniforms. Unfortunately, because of the density of students in the lunchroom, open seats are pretty much worth their weight in gold. Thus, you default to Kitten sitting on your lap.

“Boy!” you say. “Didn’t realize how many students we had.”

Lisa says, “And these are just General Studies. Who knows how many Naval Studies kids we have below deck!”

“You know, I just realized why I don’t let Kitten eat off my lap.” You’re having some real obvious difficulties trying to eat your curry while Kitten is in the way. Kitten meanwhile is eating her lunch unimpeded.

Kitten looks back at you, smug. “Having trouble?”

“Don’t be smart with me, young lady,” you say. Kitten scoops up a bit of her curry and jams it into your mouth-ohgodthisisdelicious.

Lisa says, “So, your project go okay?”

You nod, swallowing up that delicious curry. “Yep! Professor really liked it, might get a B at the very least on it.”

“That’s great!” says Nancy.

“It is! I feel like I’m finally settling into school life,” you say.

“You weren’t already?” asks Lisa.

“Well, you know,” you say, “Character development. As they say in English Class at least.” Lisa rolls her eyes at that. “Oh don’t roll your eyes, admit it, you think I’m totally awesome for starting to get my shit together!”

You nod. “Sure, why not? We can have ourselves a little dinner party.”

Nancy nods. “Excellent!” She snaps her finger. “Oh, just so you know-” she motions you to come a bit closer. You lean past Kitten and towards Nancy. “I called Fairless and the Hall Monitors. They’re fine with our little flash mob today.”

You nod again. “What about Fredendall, what’ll she think?”

“It’s not like Fredendall has lunch with us. She always eats in the Senior Courtyard.”

“There’s a Senior Courtyard?” you ask.

“Yeah! For Seniors.”

You puff your cheeks. “D’oh. Why hadn’t I heard of that?”

“Anyway, she won’t be around to protest, so I think we’re in clear.”

Speaking of in the clear, you turn your attention to Cathy standing on her seat, in Tankery Uniform. Not the wisest idea considering the skirts, but how else are you going to get everyone’s attention. She plants a finger in her mouth, lets off a loud whistle.

“Ooh, that’s our cue!” you say.

Kitten freezes. “But-“

“NO TIME, KITTEN, LET’S GO!”

All the Tankery girls stand from their seats and head to the center of the cafeteria, the only place large enough to hold all of you. You all assume a square formation, you at the forefront with your staff. All the students in the cafeteria look at you, confused, bemused, some holding out their phones to take pictures or record. Good, you’ve got their attention.

Cathy slides amongst her freshmen. “’Kay girls!” she yells. “Ready?”

“READY!”

“1! 2! 1-2-3-4!”

You stomp your feet and clap your hands to the rhythm, then begin your dance.

Everywhere we go, everywhere we go!
People want to know, people want to know!
Who we are, who we are!
So we tell them, so we tell them!
We are the Tankers! We are the Tankers!
Mighty mighty Tankers! Mighty Tankers!

You clap then slide into two neat columns. You stomp and shout, “Hoo-hoo, HOOYAH!”

1-2-3-4, Lafayette! Here we go!

5-6-7-8, Be prepared! Say a prayer! We’ll be there! Over there!

You stomp your feet for the last time.

All the students in the cafeteria burst into applause, laughter, and cheers. Your teams break formation to wave, either embarrassed, or proud of the attention they’re getting. Kitten shyly waves at everyone.

Maybe you should say something.

Once everyone calms down a bit, you get up to the forefront of the formation and snap your fingers. An obedient freshman brings you a microphone, that’s convenient. You clear your throat. “Students! My name’s Gertrude Pool, Sophomore Class President and Commander of the Lafayette Girls Academy Tankery Program!” You wave to your Tankery girls. “As you can see, we’re all really hyped for our upcoming match next weekend with William Adams Naval Academy! Are you?!”

They respond with screams and cheers.

“I’m sorry! I didn’t quite catch that. Tanks and big guns, you know? What did you say?”

Everyone cheers louder.

“Okay, okay! Heard you that time!” You grin. “Now, I’m going to tell you something. The Tankery Program is new, that’s a fact! But we got enthusiasm, courage, and spirit on our side! And I want to know if any of you, indeed, if any of you are willing to help us out!”

Everyone again cheers at that. Good, you’ve got them hook, line, and sinker.

“Right! I want you all to text either my treasurer, Lisa Cowell, my VP, Nancy Whitmore, or my Secretary, Ramirez! We need money, anything you can provide us! Lafayette Girls Academy is a team, and you all are our bread and butter! Will you help us?”

Everyone again cheers. Lisa, Nancy, and Ramirez’s cellphones immediately go off, and they check them to see what could be dozens, or even hundreds of new texts of support to the Tankery Program.

“Anyway, we won’t hold you guys too long now. Go back to your lunches, remember! Donate!”

Everyone excitedly returns to their lunches. You sit down at your seat, beaming with joy.

“That was great!” Nancy says. “You think we’ll get more money, President?”

Lisa nods. “Yeah, at least we know we won’t get in trouble for this. Hell, we won’t even have to attend the pep rally. Boringest shit to sit through you know?”

You check the time. “Oooh, time for gym class.” You quickly dig into the curry and finish it with the gusto of a dog. “Kitten, want to-“

“No.”

“Okay.”

You bid farewell to your crew and head to Gymn class. Thankfully, today is a free period. Which means you can do whatever you’d like. You sit there in your Tankery uniform, occasionally answering a question about Tankery in general, or where your cute outfit came fom. Now that you think about it, you could totally use your Tankery uniform as streetclothes, perhaps. You need to remind yourself to get Anna to make some spares.

The Chihatan versus King Michael I match is actually pretty damn close. King Michael I of Romania fielded 3 T-38s or Panzer 38(t)s, 2 T-4s or Panzer IV ausf. J, a TA or Stug III ausf. F as their flag, and 4 T-3s or Panzer III ausf. N.

Chihatan meanwhile fielded Chi-has of all types. 5 Chi-Ha Kai, 1 Short Barrel 120mm Gun Tank like yours, 1 Type 3 Ho-Ni III, 2 Type 97 Chi-Ha with one as the flag, and 1 Chi-Nu.

You whistle admirably at the line ups. To work with tanks like those. You wonder who might win at this.

>>
> King Michael I University High School

“The Romanians I think. They got the better tanks right? This oughta be a shut-out.”

You sit in awe as the match goes on. This is totally NOT a shut-out.

The Romanians fight valiantly against Chihatan, rushing their defensive positions with all their might. The Chi-Has, for their part, crumple like paper, but only if they actually get shot. Chihatan’s commander seems to really know the terrain, and whereas she might lose one tank against King Michael, King Michael would lose a tank as well, keeping the balance in favor of no one.

You seem study the Panzer IV Js. They seem a bit… bad. You can’t put your finger on it. Something about them seems slower.

Hanna bites her fingernails. “Oh jeez!”

The King Michael I formation of tanks, the remaining ones at least, a Panzer III and both Panzer IVs had been traded for three of Chihatan’s Chi-Ha Kais. What Hanna is really worrying about is the fact that they’re wondering right into an ambush in a forest. The Chihatan team has camouflaged themselves brilliantly amongst the bushes.

Grant says, “This is gonna suck.”

The Chi-Has all fire, some shots bouncing off the superior German armor, but some finding their marks. It instantly turns into a complete clusterfuck.

“I can’t tell who’s winning!” shouts a random freshman.

In the confusion, you spot King Michael I’s flag tank trying to escape. Maybe they can get away before-

It receives a shot into the engine block from the more attentive Chi-Nu.

Holy shit.

“King Michael I University High School’s flag tank has been rendered inoperable, Chihatan Academy is victorious!”

Grant looks at you. “That was crazy, wasn’t it?”

With that, gym class is over. You bid farewell to Grant and Hanna, then move onto Theatre Class. Nothing particularly happens of course, save for Roberta and her gaggle of tryhards doing “more” improv games. History Class as well goes by relatively smoothly, along with French.

You pay particularly close attention in French Class, and even answer some of the teacher’s questions in broken but understandable French. That’s gonna get you a long way in France at least.

With that, School’s over. However, the Pep Rally is supposed to start in like ten minutes. You don’t really need to go since it’s mostly Fredendall grandstanding the Sports teams. Wouldn’t hurt to make an appearance though, would it?

Then again, the Saunders versus Christie Match is in two hours. Nancy and the rest of the crew oughta be at the HQ preparing dinner.

The drums and horns play as you stand off to the side of the stands alongside the other staffs. On the field, the sports teams assemble and introduce themselves to the loud cheers of all the assembled students.

“We’re going to get out there, and show them what we’re made of!” yells Fredendall over the mic. Eh, could be worse. It could be Spirit Week. She could be wearing a toga.

You shudder. Spirit Week.

Alongside you stand the other staffs, the Juniors and the Seniors. Fairless is idly biting on her lip, apparently wanting to be somewhere other than here. Betty meanwhile is simply texting away on her phone.

You ask Fairless, “How many sports teams are there?”

“30-ish,” she responds.

You sigh as the teams start introducing themselves. The baseball team, the softball team, the Lacrosse team, the Track and Field Team, the Ultimate Frisbee team, the Golf team, the CURLING team, the flag football team, the tennis team…

This is going to be a while.

You cross your arms standing by as Fredendall pumps up the crowd. “She seems really popular with the student body.”

Fairless says, “Well, she’s a girl who keeps her promises. Of course the students love her.”

“… and finally, last but not least, we’ve got the Field Hockey team!” The Field Hockey team runs out onto the field to thunderous applause and cheers.

Fairless looks over at you. “I saw what you did at lunch.”

You smile, looking at her. “Did you?”

“Indeed,” she says. She rubs her fingers together, then says, “Was kind of cheesy if you ask me. But it was cool.”

“Well thanks, wasn’t my cheer though. One of my teams came up with it.”

“That’s real nice,” says Fairless.

“Remember!” shouts Fredendall. “We’re going to take these teams to schools all over the world! Show them what Lafayette Girls Academy is made of! So show your support and get out there, and fill those bleachers!” With that, the Pep Rally is over.

Fredendall walks over, looking positively accomplished. She doesn’t even flinch when she notices you. “Oh, Gertrude! Cute outfit!”

You nod. “Thanks, Fredendall.”

She laughs. “So, I hear you had a little flashmob at lunch today. Sorry to say I missed it. Seniors eat free in the Senior Courtyard you know? Can’t miss out on that.” She snaps her finger. “Though, I hear you’re going up against William Adams next Saturday.” She winks at you. “Good luck!”

“Well, thanks, Fredendall.”

Fredendall nods, beaming. “Great!” She snaps her finger. “Anyway, us upperclassmen are going to head out for some coffee. I’d invite you of course, but I know you’re busy with your little Tankery stuff.”

You nod again, forcing a smile on your face. “Yeah. I’d much prefer to do actual work unfortunately, Fredendall.”

“Righto then, Bernadette, Betty, let’s all go.” The councils all walk past you, leaving you in the dust.

Welp, only one place left to go for the day then, the Tankery HQ. You get on the path and head out for the HQ. Hopefully your teams will be there by now, hopefully dinner’s prepared maybe. You rub your belly, Nancy’s cooking. Exquisite.

You arrive at the HQ in good time, noticing that all the tanks are parked back in the warehouse where they belong. You step inside and immediately smell the scent of fresh cooking.

Nancy pops out of the lounge. “Oh, President! I was about to come get you. Want to help me in the Kitchen if you’re not too busy?”

SPAGHETTI

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOO

You help Nancy get the noodles together, get the tomato sauce just the right consistency, texture, and taste, and other duties in the kitchen. The smell overwhelms as your stomach begins growling like an angry wolf.

“… and then you mix it like so,” says Nancy as she stirs the sauce. “Now, you can throw any kinds of herbs into the sauce, I like to use oregano. Now, we also have meatballs for this. You don’t have to spread the sauce on the meatballs, but feel free if that’s something you’d like.”

Once the sauce is finished, you begin pouring it all over the plates of cooked and ready pasta. You let the smell fill your lungs. You’re going to fucking devour this thing when Nancy tells you it’s ready.

“And… for dessert… I’m thinking Apple Pie.”

You nod. “Oh, that’s the most American thing I can think of, Nancy. Apple Pie. You cook that a lot?”

Nancy nods. “One of my favorite kinds. My grandma cooked it for me all the time!”

You check the time, 4:30. Almost time to hit the Saunders match.

Kitten walks in and immediately the smell hits her. “Whoa, what’s that smell? You cook that, Trudy?”

“Well, a little bit of me, but mostly Nancy.” You put your hand on Nancy’s shoulder. “You hungry, Kitten?”

Kitten nods, salivating over the plates of hot spaghetti. “YES.”

“Welp,” you say, “Think the plates are ready?”

Nancy nods. “Yep!”

As if on cue, all of your crews immediately swarm the kitchen like bees and start grabbing plates left and right, you’re unable to form a response before the last crewmember leaves.

“Wow,” you say. “Didn’t see that coming.”

Kitten nods. “They must be really excited to have Nancy’s cooking.”

Whatever. You grab the remaining plates then head on over to the lounge. Lisa and Ramirez are busy setting up the big screen TV for the match up. You sit down on a couch next to Kitten, putting your plate squarely in your lap.

“That one goes there, Ramirez,” says Lisa. Ramirez puts that one there and immediately the TV turns on. All idle chatter goes away in favor of paying attention to the TV.

Two young ladies in sharp looking suits sit at a desk outside with headphones and microphones. “Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen! My name is Pepper Brookes! And you all know my faithful co-host, Courtney “Cotton” McKnight. You’re joining us in scenic France where the hills are low, the hedges are high, and the tanks are rearing to fight.”

Lisa sits down, spaghetti already getting sucked into her gullet. “So, who are we rooting for?”

“My money’s on Saunders. I think Kay will win this. Don’t you think?”

Lisa shrugs. “Eh, talk of the E-100, not to mention all those other… tanks. I’m not sure.”

You see the three judges, the ones who refereed your match with Heinlein in fact. Kanon Sasogawa, the lead judge, says, “Now, the flag tank match between Saunders High School and J. Walter Christie Polytechnical Institute shall begin!”

Kay and Perrine walk up to each other, and amicably shake hands. They tell each other good luck, and then proceed off to their tanks.

“Now, Cotton, let me be clear with you, we have a traditional Tankery Classic team versus one of the best, if not THE best Unlimited team in the North American league. How do you think this match is going to go down?”

“Well, Brookes. The thing about Walter Christie is that they seem really fond of unusual designs, prototypes, and lesser known variants of better known tanks. The Churchill AVRE that Perrine Hobart commands from for instance is known better as a demolitions and engineering vehicle.”

“Yeah, let’s take a look at the teams here. We have 7 M4A3E8 Shermans, 1 M4A1E8, 1 M4A4 Firefly commanded by Ace gunner Naomi, and 1 M4A3E2 Jumbo. That is a very solid roster, Cotton.”

“Well, compared to Christie who have brought… well… a lot of things. An E-100 for instance, the AVRE as previously mentioned, an LVT(A)-5, A Schofield tank, a Matilda Hedgehog, a Panzer IV Kugelblitz, an SU-14-2, an M3 Lee CDL, a TOG II, and what appears to be an Excelsior tank.”

You munch on your spaghetti as you watch the teams assemble.

“Now, the match can begin.”

The Aces begin their argument over which tank is best.

Wendy seems to be a staunch supporter of probably the most normal tank there, the Matilda Hedgehog. “And the heavy armor on the Matilda is great!”

“Yeah,” says Michelle, “But it can it stand up against the 76mm and the 17 pounder? I think not. The armor was heavy for early war stuff.”

Wendy nods. “Okay, okay, fair point, but the Spigot Mortar launcher’s gotta count for something right?”

“Why are we even discussing Christie’s tanks?” shouts Bolter. “Don’t we hate them? You guys remember the shit they do in Unlimited matches?”

Kate says, “Don’t remind me.”

You ask, “How would you guys rate the E-100?”

Octavia says, “E-100’s definitely going to be soaking damage, that’s for sure. You’re going to need something REALLY big to get through that armor. It’s like a Maus.”

The Saunders team advances in V formation from the southwest towards the north. Christie just starts in some random staggering towards the west from the northeast.

“Now, Cotton, I think we might see an engagement here right off the bat if these teams keep to their courses.”

“Yeah, Brookes, but check out how utterly slow that E-100 is. It’s lagging worse than a Mark I tank.”

You receive a call.

“Yeah! I mean, they might not look it, but Christie consistently wins titles in the North American Tankery league. They definitely know what they’re doing when it comes to tanks. I personally think the whole prototype unusual line up thing is just some scam to get the other team to drop their guard.”

“Well… it still doesn’t make too much sense.”

“Of course… wait a minute. How are you watching this? Don’t you have school? Shouldn’t it be like 11 O’Clock over there?”

“Well, I did have a classmate who came in. I had him sneeze on me. Turns out he had the Flu! So I get to stay home all week watching the Tankery matches!”

“… That’s nice, Griselda.”

“Yeah, see you, Griselda.”

You hang up and resume watching the match. Everyone’s attention is focused as the first engagement starts picking up.

Cotton says, “… and here we have the first skirmish of the fight. An M4A3E8 engaging the Schofield tank.”

“Uh, just a reminder for you folks, the M4A1E8 and the Schofield happen to be the flag tanks for both sides. The Schofield has a respectable speed and armament, at least with that Littlejohn Adaptor on the end of that 2 pounder.”

“What do you think’s going on, Brookes?”

“Probably some prodding, recon. Nothing too out of the ordinary.”

You watch as the Schofield quickly runs away and into the maze of the hedgerows.

“Right, Cotton, I gotta tell you something. Christie appears to be taking the defensive here. Their line up isn’t exactly an offensive one because of how varied it is, it’s not going to last long against a more solid line up like Saunders.”

“That’s right, Brookes, they’ll be torn to pieces in the open. However-“

The first E8 which met the Schofield, now flanked by two others, is thrown aside by a huge explosion.

“That SU-14-2 is doing some amazing work! What’s the armament on that thing?”

“Uh… according to our technical specs, it’s either a 203 or a 152mm gun.”

“Well, it’s just digging tunnels!”

The Shermans quickly recover from the blast and set off on their previous course. Another screen shows a sneaky maneuver by Christie as well, a Kugelblitz starts towing some logs to throw up a bunch of dust.

“What are they doing?” you ask.

Kate says, “It’s a trick. You throw up a lot of dust to fake movement.”

Saunders is apparently falling for it as the Shermans peel off from their original course to pursue the dust cloud. The rest of the Shermans are divided into groups like the first three, with the Jumbo defending the flag tank way in the back hidden in a nearby forest. Meanwhile, the E-100 slowly lumbers through the field, crushing hedgerow after hedgerow and destroying roads like no one’s business.

“That E-100,” you say. “Daaamn.”

You receive a new phonecall.

Hmm, maybe we should spend it on a new tank in the shop? After sponsorship money on Monday, we'll have nearly enough for the Tiger II, and I'm sure we could scrape together the difference.

After all, we're running low on empty tanks and have potential crews about.

No, we're not going to just randomly impulse buy shitty tanks because there might be a slight interuption in the plan.

We've thought this through, discussed it at great length for several threads, and we're not going to fuck it up now by being impulsive indecisive morons.

We are going to get enough money for the Tiger II ASAP, we are going to buy it, then we are going to put everything else we get into upgrading our mediums to latewar variants, and whatever is left is to go towards winning the recall election
>>
>>29444826

What tank crews? The nearest one that looks to be recruitable are the Theater Tech crew, and they're not avaliable until the play is over. And once we get the Tiger II the Panzer IV becomes a spare anyway. I have no idea where this paranoia that we don't have enough tanks come from.
>>
>>29444841

They had no choice in the matter.

Otto Carius was a loader in a 38(t), got injured, and then got selected for Tiger I training, he used one of them until he got pulled back and put into a Jagdtiger.

All the while he used what he was given.

Also, what makes you think the thoughts of long dead aces impact our current situation, when there is no Tiger I available.

Please, don't just randomly jump into the quest and go "Hey guys, we should get this tank we can't get, and I have no idea what our situation is or what we've planned to do for many threads!"

> Keep Watching

You ask Lisa, “Is our money safe?”

Lisa nods. “Should be. Our Tankery budget at least. Fredendall still has access to the Class Treasury. That I couldn’t work around.”

You nod. “Also, any of you guys heard of a Bakery around here?”

Everyone shakes their head. Hm, you didn’t realize you even had a Bakery. Oh well, might be worth a visit later. Time to watch the match. It appears Saunders has gotten into an engagement with the E-100.

“And here we have it, Brookes. 4 Shermans engaging the E-100. Unfortunately for Saunders and Christie the terrain is nobody’s advantage. Hedegrows, a very soft road, all that junk are keeping the advantages afforded to both parties down low.”

“That’s right, Cotton. Look at the E-100 presenting its frontal face to Saunders. They might as be shooting spitwads at it.”

Every shot fired by a 76 bounces off the E-100’s frontal face. The E-100 begins advancing on the Shermans, which have begun retreating. It fires, knocking a Sherman onto its side for a knockout.

“Oooohh! That’s gotta hurt!” The E-100 begins crawling to a halt, then begins listing to the side. “Cotton, are you seeing this?”

“Yep, the E-100 is sinking right into a ditch.”

The ground gives way as the E-100 loses control and slides right a ditch by the side of the road. The Shermans quickly peel away out of the E-100’s gun depression.

“Man, that’s the problem with these German superheavies. Way, WAY too heavy. Think they’ll get it out in time?”

“All the Kings horses and all the Kings men couldn’t save that E-100.”

Your looking at this too narrow minded, many many factors influenced their opinions during two very different periods in the war, with two very different situations in terms of logistics and support and training.

The two cannot be compared during such times.

Also, none of that matters to this right now.

Please, take the time to read the pastebins at the top of the thread, understand the situation the characters are in, get a handle on the story, and maybe you won't get shouted at for being ignorant and trying to ruin all our plans

[2/2]

Meanwhile, it appears Christie has actually found the position of Saunders’ flag tank. The Excelsior tank and the M3 Lee CDL move to engage it in the forest. The M4A1E8 bugs out as the Sherman engages both tanks.

“Now, Brookes. I don’t think the Excelsior and the M3 CDL can take on a Jumbo in straight fight. What do you think is going on here?”

“I’m not sure myself, Cotton. Maybe you can think of something?”

“I think what’s happening is that Christie is trying to draw out the Flag tank at the risk of two of their own. They have the more mobile Schofield and the Kugelblitz are still running around, both could probably get a decent track shot and they both happen to be within a kilometer of that M4A1. If they can slow down that flag tank, they have a shot at winning.”

“Oh, it’s a bold strategy, Cotton, let’s see if it pays for them.”

The M4A1E8 runs off into the open, the Schofield and the Kugelblitz pop up at a nearby hill and begin taking potshots at it. The Churchill, the TOG II, the LVT, and the Matilda all break cover in the hedgerows and begin converging. The M4A1 turns its turret and begins aiming.

“Oh! Cotton! Both flag tanks are exposed here! One shot could end this match!”

The M4A1 fires, splashing short of the Schofield.

“OH! SO CLOSE!”

Everyone is on the seat of their pants, or skirts if you think about it. Nancy looks over at you. “Who do you think has this? Saunders or Christie?”

> Saunders

“I think Saunders can still pull it out.”

All the Shermans which had been fapping about in the hedegrows also come to the Flag tank’s aide. This results in a couple of skirmishes between the heavier tanks of Christie and Saunders in the hedgerows, while simultaneously the Kugelblitz and the Schofield begin pursuing the M4A1 to the ends of the Earth.

“This is getting intense, Cotton! Will the strategy pay off for Christie!”

“I don’t know, Brookes! The M4A1 has some pretty decent armor and a good gun but even it suffers in a 2-1 fight! None of those Christie tanks attacking it have guns capable of penetrating it frontally but maybe if they get a engine shot or a side shot into the ammo! Just maybe!”

The M4A1 begins orienting left as it moves, then flicks harder left.

“What’s this! It’s a Bootlegger’s turn! They’re standing and fighting!”

The Schofield and the Kugelblitz peel off in different directions. The M4A1 brings its frontal armor to them and immediately fires off a shot, blasting the Kugelblitz and knocking it out.

“The Kugelblitz is down! It’s just the Schofield and the M4A1 now! Where is the Jumbo! WHERE ARE WALTER CHRISTIE’S TANKS!?”

The M4A1 begins backing up as the Schofield begins peeling away. Neither appear to be willing to engage each other for fear of getting knocked out. Your jaw is practically locked open at this rate. Even though you said Saunders had this, who knows?

[1/2]
>>
>>29445495

Then M4A1 explodes.

“WHAT!?” You scream. Everyone begins shouting in confusion. “What happen!?”

Cotton says, “Brookes! Where’d that come from!?”

“Cotton. That was the SU-14-2. They just landed a direct hit on that Flag tank. From over 5 Kilometers away.”

Judge Kanon Sasogawa confirms the white flag on the M4A1. “Saunders High School’s Flag tank has been rendered inoperable. J. Walter Christie Polytechnical Institute is Victorious!”

Pepper Brookes and Cotton McKnight are dumbstruck. “Well,” says Cotton. “Looks like that strategy did pay off.”

You all sit there, dumbstruck. The Aces all shake their head, disapproving. “That was bullshit!” yells Wendy.

“Such horseshit,” says Wendy.

Kate says, “Well, you have to hand it to them at least. It was a lucky shot.”

“It was a fluke,” says Wendy. “Christ, there’s a reason no good team use SPGs in their rosters, and it’s because they’re fucking worthless in actual combat. Their guns can’t penetrate for shit unless they hit the top armor and their armor’s paper thing. What happened here is a T-35 with the biggest gun they could fit on it made a shot that shouldn’t have happened.”

“So you’re saying Saunders should have won?” you ask.

Wendy nods violently. “Yeah! Fucking Saunders at least fights fair! No team deserves to get artillery sniped like that!”

Michelle looks off, dreamily. “Still… that 152mm gun.”

“Oh fuck off, Michelle,” says Wendy. “If you want a 152, maybe instead of masturbating to crappy heavy tanks like the Pershing, you should start fantasizing about fucking ISU-152s and their Slavic tactical logs and shit getting shoved up your fucking cunt.”

Michelle raises her hands defensively. “Jesus, Wendy. You sound mad.”

“Hey, Kay, you doing alright?”

“Yep! Guessing you saw us get sniped by that SU-14-2. Alisa is nigh inconsolable right now but she’ll come around.”

“Right, sorry about that. Getting knocked out that early?”

“Ah, it’s fine! As long as I’m in a tank and I’m doing Senshadou, I don’t care about winning or losing! Sure, I’m a bit sad, but it’ll pass! It’s a great honor to even be in the World Tournament anyway, you should consider yourself lucky, Gertrude!”

“Yeah, I guess. Anyway, hope you’re doing well, Kay.”

“I am. Good luck with William Adams. And if by chance you do meet Walter Christie, give them a good asskicking will you?”

“I’ll see to it. See you.”

You hang up and get back to reading a Doc Savage story. The one where he meets the Nazi submarine crew in the jungles of the Amazon, and has to fight them while fighting beasts of all kinds with his patented airgun which fires a capsule containing a deadly electric charge. Of course, Doc Savage doesn’t kill people, he’s not that kind of person.

Kitten looks back at you as she plays one of her video games, Men of War: Assault Squad you think it is. “Enjoying it?”

You nod. “You know it.” Wait. You’re supposed to arrive Saturday night in Cherbourg… “OH SHIT!”

“What?”

“Shore Leave is supposed to start today! Totally forgot!”

Kitten beams. “Oooh! We get to get out of school that fast!”

You snap your finger. “We oughta visit Paris or something!”

“I think you’re thinking too far ahead.”

“Whatever,” You say. “Mind if I crash here for the night?”

“Nah, go ahead.”

You drop the comic and open a new one. Nathan Zachary and the Fortune Hunters: The Atlantropa Raid.

Unless we can find at least 7,000 before Monday, we won't be able to bring the King Tiger into the match due to the 1 week delivery time.
And we'll be going into the match with the StuG still using a stubby gun, a Sentinel with a 2pdr, and the Panzer IV without the supplementary parts.

I'll concede the point for saving up for now at least until we see what the next 2 in-verse days brings.

Mother of god, this is the first reasonable suggestion I've seen in hours.

Hopefully the timing works, since if we need to do any conversions that's going to eat up days.

Anyways, it might be worth something to see what sort of tank the Aces actually want. Trudy has a pretty wide net of friends and contacts now, she could probably locate a specific make and model with some time.

Which, incidentally, brings me to the fact that only the wehraboo of the Aces are particularly enthused about the King Tiger. If we (Anonymous as a collective) are actually decided on that, some crew/ego management will probably go a long way...
>>
>>29447360
>see what sort of tank the Aces actually want
We actually asked them that, and they all said they King Tiger would be good, they know german heavies well, the only one who didn't agree was wendy, because she's a cunt, but who cares about the loader?
>>
>>29447235
>We've got a 17pdr we can stick on the sentinel

It's not really a matter of just sticking the gun on, for it to be Tankery legal it would need to go from AC I to AC IV.
The Conversion requires relocating the engines, renovating the upper hull to have a larger turret ring, building a turret that can fit the 17 Pounder
>>

Conversions only taking a day is a long known fact by now.

Yeah, and all that amounts to is what is presented in the shop list, if its no in there, unless its offered to us by another school (which, at this point in the league, is very unlikely) thats all we can choose from.

we've had this discussion several times in the last few threads, and with had we have now, and with what is available now, we've decided on the Tiger II, for the love of god, don't fuck us or our plans over right now.
>>
>>29447555
If we don't put them in a german heavy, we are putting them in a latewar medium that will not be a Pz. IV, the only reason they are in that is because it was available and we don't have the KT yet.

for the love of god, we are not going to Elite the Pz. IV
>>
>>29447552

>>
>>29447555

The Panzer 4 is a well balanced workhorse that doesn't have any really big flaws, however it doesn't really have the impact the Tiger II would have. It's not as suited to be a carry like the Tiger.
>>
>>29447604
exactly, we need to put the Aces in a tank that can carry, the Pz. IV is a good workhorse, but we need something much better, like the KT, or a Panther Ausf. G or a Firefly to put them into and Elite.

And besides, they are comfortable in a german heavy

>>
>>29447867

>>
>>29448134
>122
We're planning to eventually convert the KV-95 into a KV-122, but that will be a long while a way and expensive.

We don't really need more HV 90/88 guns, just mroe guns that can work well, like 7.5cm L/70's and 17pdr's

Once we have the KT it will be able to carry should we need it, and provide really good long range support for our mediums, which I'm thinking, after we get the KT and have enough cash and get re-elected, we should upgrade/convert the Panther into an Ausf. G model, the sherman chassis into a M4A4 then a Firefly, and our Sentinel into a ACIV, the Sentinel should be converted before the Firefly is built, it will be cheaper as we've already got a 17pdr and the tank has some upgrades.

After that, its a matter of phasing out/replacing our early war tanks, getting our T-34/76 converted into a T-34/85, and getting our Churchill converted into a Mk. VI/VII/VIII depending on the gun we want on it.
>>
>>29448344
>KV-95
Derp, meant KV-85*
>>
>>29448344
>Once we have the KT it will be able to carry

That's what I have a problem with. Having one carry tank will be disastrous if the enemy takes it out.
>>
>>29448418
I agree, which is why it should never be the sole deciding factor in our tactics and strategies
>>
>>29448418

>>29448344 & >>29448431 here

I should add, that I meant
>be able to carry should we need it
with heavy emphasis on
>should we need it

We should never plan solely around 1 tank, sure it is a formidable tank by itself, but like all tanks, it still needs support, and with support, most likely from our Churchill and KV-85, it should be very formidable, we just have to avoid getting complacent with it, and be smart with our strategies.
>>
>>29448510
Speaking of Strategies, what is it
>>
>>29448344
I kind of agree except for the firefly, the Easy 8 is best tank for Trude on a Sherman since it can house all 5 members compared to the Firefly which houses 4.
>>
>>29448635
With the composition of our tanks, a hammer & anvil approach would work, we'd have to be mindful to keep the anvil element moving from cover to cover, to not get outmaneuvred, but hopefully out hammer element would distract their flanking forces into a head on attack.

Depending on the terrain and the opposing teams tank line up, things will change of course, we can only really come up with concrete strategies once we know who/what/where we will be fighting.

As for our match against William Adams, I'd have to have another look at their lineup, I can't recall what it was, and we'd need good information on the battleground, terrain features and composition and whatnot.

>>29448748
Oh I agree, by 'Sherman > Firefly', I meant the unused stripped Sherman Comp Spec chassis we got from selling the Ultra Sherman parts from. Trude's M4A1E8 that she's riding in now, can eventually be upgraded to a A3E8, but the intention of getting a Firefly, was to use the empty sherman chassis we have lying around.
>>
>>29448748
Classical/traditional Fireflies lost the dedicated operator because the 17pdr shells are one piece assemblies rather than two piece, meanig they occupy much more volume than otherwise suggested.

It's not unreasonable to make some change to the ammunition storage and total ammunition capacity to allow the fifth crewmember (ie, Kitten) to stay in place.

ITL greenlit a fucking E-100, this is small potatoes compared to that.

Full combat load was somewhere around 60-80 rounds, I think. No way we're going to use even half that.
>>
>>29448824
Also by replacing the early war tanks, what do you mean by that?

The Stuart is a good light tank and we need scouts,

The Sentienel can house the 17 pounder

The 120mm Chi-Ha, well we can't sell it since it's on a loan but we can convert it to a Ho-ni if anything.

The Souma....I'm still kind of hoping for the prototype conversion but that might be the only tank that might need replacing but the sewing club is content with it.
>>
>>29448824
Is the KT going to be the Anvil?
>>
>>29448834
I don't know, I rather have an easy 8 then a firefly for trude but that is just me.

we can make a firefly out of the chassis
>>
>>29448902
>The Stuart is a good light tank and we need scouts

we can keep that, we always need small fast scouts, there were not too many latewar, although we could replace it with a M24 Chaffee

>The Sentienel can house the 17 pounder
Never intended to sell that when we can convert it into an ACIV.

>The 120mm Chi-Ha, well we can't sell it since it's on a loan but we can convert it to a Ho-ni if anything.
The Type-97 is kind of a dead end, it can be converted, but its still woefully obsolete.

>The Souma
Its got to go, it was pretty crap at the beginning of the war, and they never got the opportunity to expand and develop on it, only thing its got going for it, is its somewhat agile and speedy, but its not scout material.
>>
>>29448960
our heavies would be that anvil, a force consisting most likely of the KT, our Churchill Mk. IV, and the KV-85, if we stick fast tanks in that element, they just get separated trying to maneuver, we need tanks that can keep up with each other.
>>
>>29448978
I'd point out that we need/could really use another 10 tanks that need to be brought up to standard and armed appropriately. While its true some of our current tanks are sub par, I'd prefer numbers and flexibility over quality.
>>
>>29448973
>we can make a firefly out of the chassis
Was always our intention

the possibility of having another firefly, is just a bonus should we persue it
>>
>>29449038
this is true, and as long as we are under the 20 tank limit, we should bring as many tanks as we've got crews.

I was more talking about when we would be in a position to replace and phase out those tanks, very much down the line
>>
>>29448978
I still think we should keep the stuart and maybe the souma until we get close to the 20 tank limit, their decent for now

>>29449059
That is an idea but for some reason having two fireflys bothers me, I guess.

also I like the thought of trude having a easy 8 then a firefly
>>
>>29449009
KV-85 has less armor than a KV-1, the Churchill has an armored hull but that's it.
These anchors will only work against teams with weak guns, once we start facing teams with good tanks the KT will become the carry tank.
The only way I can see that the Churchill remains competitive is to turn it into a VII
>>
>>29449141
>The only way I can see that the Churchill remains competitive is to turn it into a VII
Thats what we're aiming at, yes.

The problem with the KV-85, is that while it had reduced armor to make it lighter, its still very slow, and if/when we put the 122mm D-2-5T gun on it, it will be even slower, but at that point, we could buy a cheap IS chassic, put the KV-122 turret (which was an IS turret) and gun on the IS and replace the KV-85 for a tank with decent armor, we can then convert/upgrade the IS into the later model variant that had a sloped UFP
>>
>>29449196
I was actually thinking of an IS tank to help the KT
>>
>>29449196
we can convert a kv-122 into an is?
>>
>>29449232
no, the hulls are entirely different

BUT, the turret and gun, from the KV-122, were taken from a early model IS, so if we convert the KV-85 into a KV-122, we can reuse the turret and gun if we find a cheap IS chassis
>>
>>29449196
The 122 isn't a very great gun. There's a reason the Union didn't stick with it and instead opted for the 100mm DT that would gun the T-44 and T-54, as essentially develop the modern Union to Russian Federation MBT cannon.
>>
And now I bet that, having explained and planned for future conversions, Schteel will ensure, we never find the parts/tanks we need for them...
>>
>>29449277
It was a great gun during the war, the reason why they went with the D10T for the T-44 and onwards, was because it was small and light weight, compared to the massive mount and breech as well as bulky two piece ammunition the 122 D25T needed.

The 122 was very much sufficient for what the Russians wanted in heavy breakthrough tanks, but did not fit with the design parameters of their medium tanks.

the two guns themselves cannot be compared on the fact that one could only be used in a heavy tank, and the other was chosen for lighter tanks with different roles on the battlefield.

also, the fact that the 122 can go straight through a panthers mantlet, turret face and take the rear turret wall off is pretty damn impressive, you should research the penetration testing the russians did with 122 and 152 guns against captured panthers and king tigers
>>
>>29449416
They did put a 122 on the T-44. It was called, appropriately enough, the T-44-122, and was found to be generally inadequate.

I'm now asking you to cite your sources.
>>
>>29449416
>>29449277
also
>as essentially develop the modern Union to Russian Federation MBT cannon.
The russians did not adopt the concept of the universal tank, or the MBT until the T-62/64 series tanks came into service, and they phased out the T-10 heavy tank, that replaced the IS4 heavy tank, both of which used 122mm guns, the IS4 used the 122mm D25T, while the T-10, used the 122mm M-62, a redesigned D25T to accommodate better technology and ammunition design.

>>29449456
>and was found to be generally inadequate.
for the T-44 project, not as a tank gun entirely. the D25T was to big and heavy for the T-44, with such a small turret, and such a heavy gun, it did not meet the requirements for the medium tank that would replace the T-34.

>I'm now asking you to cite your sources.
for what exactly? I'll try and fine the photos of the penetration tests and their data tables, I know Yuri Pasholok posted them on his blog after he found them in the russian archives, but I think the thread might die before I can post them, we're on page 10 now

>>
>>29449196

Speaking of the Iosif Stalin series, you guys think the IS-3 would be legal? It was produced during the war, albeit never seeing action, if the Sentinel can get in, why not the IS-3?

Also, the IS-3's general atheistic makes me jizz in my pants.
>>
>>29449638
theres also talk of some of the D25T's disadvantages in improving the IS-2 in one of his articles, they were not entirely happy with the 2 piece ammunition and screw breach, which meant loading was slow, and in the small turret of the IS-2 (relatively, the 122 is a huge gun), this greatly reduced its RPM, they suggested putting smaller 100mm guns (never specified which model, there were a few) into the IS-2, but by that time the IS-3 was developed, and its larger turret made most of those disadvantages go away, they were then completely fixed with the evolution of the D25T into the D30 and M-62 guns, which had redesigned breech's and ammunition.

its very clear that the Russians always had two very distinct paths of tank development, Heavy tank, and Medium tank, with smaller, faster, lighter guns in the mediums tanks, as they would not need the heavier bigger gun in their role, and the 122mm guns were for the Heavy tanks, intended for being Assault and Breakthrough tanks, where they needed larger guns to deal with bigger targets and emplacements.

The Russians never favored one gun philosophy over the other, they both had their roles, and could not be interchanged.

If prototype construction begins before the war ends, it is tanker legal
>>
>>29449826
the IS-3 should be legal, it fits the rules, and also note, the first versions of the T-54-1 may be as well, I've not done much research into them so I'm unsure about their project and constructions start and end dates

Whelp.

Man, I would buy a Trudy & Friends signed 76mm casing. I'd put that shit on my bookshelf.

I would also wear the officially licensed Lafayette tankery jacket, since I doubt the sewing club would make one just for me.

Looking through this, I'm actually glad the KT is the Porsche model, that means it's one of the initial 50 production units, so the steel shouldn't be as poor as they were later.

I was going to mention that

Thats largely a myth, that there RHS armor towards teh end of the war was too brittle and cracked/spalled easily.

Its very much untrue, the quality of german RHS armor plate throughout the war was consistent from start to finish, as the RHS steel plate factories, and the equipment their used to stamp the plate, were never impacted by the war effort.

What did change towards the end of the war was general fitting quality, things like bad welds, incorrect fitting and sometimes miscast plate, usually because they were in such a hurry and were using slave labour, that the general quality of the fitting, and adherance to design specs, drifted all over the place.

There were cases of Tiger II's in its late production having LFP's with thickness of anywhere from 100 (design spec) to 120 and even 70mm thick.

The armor quality never degraded, the general production capabilities and fitting quality standard did however suffer.

I should also add that armor quality would not matter even if the myths were true, for the ITL, the computers in the shells and tanks use specified figured for armor thickness and quality, so it would make no difference

I just manually updated the sup/tg/ archive of this thread so it caught the rather healthy discussion at the end here.

See you all next thread.

Wasn't molybdenum in short supply as the war came to an end

yep, the more exotic materials got a lot rarer, which is why they shifted design to thicker more angled plate, the RHS they made at the end of the war, could not stand up to the same levels of impact stress and vertical angles, hence their attempts to negate that weakness with angled thicker armor.

the overall quality remained the same, it just meant that they had to make the armor plate bigger, to get better slope on thicker plates
>>
>>29450503
>make the armor plate bigger, to get better slope on thicker plates
which resulted in larger tanks, to mount the larger armor, hence why the panther and king tiger were fucking huge
>>
>>29450503
When you say angled thicker armor, are you referring to the change from Tiger I and Pz IV armor layout
>>
>>29450563
that was a more natural evolution of armor design, the original requirements for the VK.30.01/02 programs wanted 30 degree sloped armor, same with the VK45.01/02 series, what would become the Panther and Tiger II respectively.

they realised that 30 degrees would not be enough, upped the requirements to 60 degrees and increased minimum acceptable plate thickness as a result of lacking the more exotic materials to make stronger armor
