Today is Theophany holiday and in some countries a day free from work. Maybe more people will be here in an hour or two.

You turn back from the cliffs edge before you’re spotted. The deer you took down will sustain you during the fight you know is coming. You don’t waste time trying to get all the meat off the carcass, instead you focus on the easiest parts to consume and fill your gut as best you can. The meat is warm and bloody, but age has made it tough. The fawn would have tasted better, but you’d need a pack to catch one of them. Maybe now that you’ve killed the buck you’ll be able to catch them though.

You leave barely enough for the scavengers to fight over, let alone enough to bring to the pack. You’ll need the strength.

When you descend the mountain slope you quickly find the human’s tracks. He’s headed directly for the den but doesn’t seem to be in much of a rush. You can smell the scent of the monsters on him, along with an overpowering smell of garlic. You’ve found wild garlic before, but they are sparse and weedy things, he has much more than that. The acid is enough to make you sneeze and waters your eyes despite how long it has been sitting.

You keep your pace careful and stick to the shadows where you can. You’ve been living on this land for a few days now, you know it better than some trespassing human. You’re almost back to the den when his scent turns strange. Sensing the danger, you back away.

Above you, perched in a tree as if he were a songbird, is Hasdrubal. In his hands is a loose bow, and he is overlooking your den. Just like the one who nearly killed you at the great hill. You can hear the sounds of fighting in the pack. The snarling and yelping of pain. The sisters are the loudest, but Schatten is the fiercest. They’re fighting against the dogs, but likely do not know of Hasdrubal and are merely targets for him.

Then you hear the loud yelping and whining of the female wolf. Her breath is short and high, lacking almost all of her strength. Schatten starts barking as you walk back around, growling with palpable bloodlust.

Hasdrubal drops out of the tree in front of you, discarding the bow and pulling out his spear. He sees you and speaks. “Come Whitefang. No bow, spear.” He spins the spear around and brings it to point at you.

You turn and run in the direction the grey wolf came from. Hasdrubal takes his opportunity and stabs your back leg as you run, but you flee anyways. You bust through the trees and see the clearing around the den. Blood is everywhere, from the wolves and the hounds. You try to find Schatten’s scent, but you realize the purpose of Hasdrubal’s garlic. Your snout is still in disarray from the overbearing scent and you can’t discern the direction your pack took.

But then you hear Schatten’s growl and you take off. You overtake the pack of hounds as they pull the black wolf to the ground, biting at his heels and circling around him. Beyond him, the female wolf is limping on without him, Hasdrubal’s stick imbedded in her chest. She’s in no shape to escape the hounds, but has been managing somehow anyways.

The three dogs beneath you are heavily injured, but fight with an insane urge that drives them to the brink. Your pack did not scatter without a fight. The dogs haven't noticed you yet.

But you worry about what Hasdrubal is doing while you handle the hounds.

I'm scared shitless.

You leap down amidst them, scattering them from Schatten. You snarl and snap at them as they circle around you. They start sniffing the air around you and seem to recognize you. Their attention had been on the black wolf, but now they are solely focused on you. But you can take on these three pups.

Of the three of them, only one is unharmed, and one of them is close to death. But when you notice that, so does Schatten. He had gotten back to his feet behind you. When the two of you lunge forward to assault the weakened one, you collide and trip over one another. You tumble over one another through the snow, snarling at one another. When you get back to your feet, the three hounds close in.

You jump away and muscle past one, knocking it into the snow to make yourself a clearing. When you turn around, you see that the three hounds are focused solely on you, giving Schatten space. And something has changed about the black wolf. Shadows dance over his fur, obscuring him in the shadows of the trees and he stands much taller at the shoulder.

Blorp's quests were easy as fuck, babby mode tier. Wolf quest is the opposite of that.
I remember in Evoquest it didn't matter how many dice were rolled, the highest would be chosen. Ie. out of 30+ dice rolls, the best would be taken and nat1's didn't override anything.
Unsurprisingly, only once in the entire quest did a failure occur.

In Ogre quest, on a d100, only about 20 results would result in failure. Nat1 was a critical success, as was nat 100

The weakened hound is yelping in pain as Schatten clamps down on his back, cracking his spine. His legs spasm and start kicking out as he twists around. The dog reveals its neck in its attempt to escape, and you rip it apart. You back off of the corpse to face the other hounds, hoping that they will back off, but they show no fear at all. They will not stop fighting till they perish.

Then you hear a strange noise, like the slurping of water and the cracking of ice. Behind you, Schatten is still biting onto the hound, but the corpse is twisting back and forth sporadically. When the black wolf finally releases his grip, blood falls out of his mouth. He snarls at the hounds with renewed vigor.

If enemies get 3 rolls too then there is no point in having best of three at all.

The two of you snarl at the hounds, and in unison charge the injured one. They put up a bit of a fight, but both of you are stronger than a normal wolf. Both of you are fueled by something more. The injured hound goes down quickly, as they snap without success. When you gore out its throat, you turn on the final hound while Schatten bites down on the corpse. The same draining and cracking of the carcass happens, and Schatten stands even taller, his wounds sealing up.

The hound fights bravely, but is just one dog. You are Whitefang, Terror of the Woods, and you tear the beast apart with your pack leader. When it finally lays dead in the snow, Schatten descends on it. You check the other dogs and confirm that the blood is completely missing. Whatever Schatten is, it is unnatural.

Then you hear Hasdrubal, he is shouting for you to come to him and laughing. You peer between the branches back to the den to see him.

He stands alone in the center of the clearing, with the grey wolf dead and slung over his shoulder.

You can hear the female wolf and her sisters in the far distance, the three of them met back up after fleeing. Schatten is leaving to join them.
