The rest of the team doesn't make it back to Oorai until late that night- the ferry ride was practically buzzing with excitement- you'd won! Oorai had won! You aren't sure what the girls had been expected- you hope they were expecting a win- but this sense of victory seemed so unexpected.

You are Commander Russells of the M26E1 Pershing Heavy Tank and you try to temper your jubilation, remaining aloof from the excitement of the noobies at their first big win- Yeah, you were going to win. No question about it.

Miho, however, looks worried- it's probably the fact that her driver, Mako Reizei, had found out her grandmother was in the hospital after a fall. Mako, along with Saori, had gone to her grandmother via Kuromurumine Helicopter. (If you could call that flying contraption a helicopter.)

A couple threads ago the issue was raised of posting writefaggotry in pastebin so as not to crowd out blackjack and possibly try and coordinate our writings. If it pleases the thread, I am willing to host a Google docs file where we may post our work, comment on it, and collaborate for greater quality writing. Vanya, /k/, Sentinel, Spreadsheet, everybody else, how does this sound to you?
>>
>>29308137
I'm not really into sharing a Google Drive with other dudes, but you do what you need to.

You put an arm around Miho and give her a light hug. "Don't worry- I'm sure Mako's grandma is fine." You reassure her. "Tomorrow's Sunday... We'll go see them in the morning!" You say, enthusiastically. "Besides, we won- how's it going to look to the rest of the girls if you're moping about?"

She smiles. "Just worried- Mako's grandmother means a lot to her." She looks out at the sun as it sets over the mainland. "That's a good idea, though- we'll catch the first ferry out to Oorai tomorrow!"

It takes another few hours before the ferry reaches the Oorai schoolship (You're proud to say due to a combination of living on the carrier and having not eaten anything substantial since early this morning, you only have to run to the side and puke twice!) and when it finally docks its fully dark out- you can just barely see the crate containing Black Jack as it's craned into Oorai's shipping hold.

When you finally arrive back home, grandpa is already there. "Hell of a fight you put up today!" He says with a grin. "Haven't seen Black Jack fight like that in a long time."

Thinking ahead to Anchovy meeting: some suggestions so her team is competitive given we have a Pershing that cleans house with Tiger IIs.
For tankettes: Solothurn S-18/1000s or just get Cannone da 47/32 M35 and call it Semovente L3 da 47/32.
For heavy tank killing power, get Semovente 90/53’s (congratulations, you now have your nationalized 88mm) and Semovente 105/25s (Italian T28/95, sort of).
Upgrade the Semovente 75/18 to the Semovente 75/43 and you are now driving a StuG

The closest we had were a pair of Georgian (the country, not the state) sisters who had cute faces, cute accents, and shit personalities.
Says the pot to the kettle.
>>
>>29310646
A sawn-off 20pdr wouldn't have a terribly significant performance increase over an APDS 17pdr.

Era being 1941-42
>>
>>29311112
Yep, I can agree with that.
>>
>>29311058
Better gun, better armor, better proposed powerplant. Better in every way in the individual sense, but quite possibly worse in the strategic sense.
The t-34 was wonderful at the strategic level, but absolutely terrible at the individual level.
>>
>>29311112
If you ignore the M4 Sherman, sure.
>>
>>29311224
The Shermans in 1941-42 were still catching fire if you looked at them wrong.

The Sentinel had better armour, better armament, better powerplant, better mobility. The only thing it was inferior to a sherman in was armour in the turret front.
>>
>>29311224
Basic M4? Nope.

Sentinel AC1 is a little worse, but the production AC3 is far better. The AC4 shits all over every WW2 Sherman, too.

"It was only our first round..." You say with a shrug, trying to downplay the achievement. "I'm worried we might get too confident..." It's probably something Miho worries about too- whether today was real skill or beginner's luck- and whether the team would know the differance.

"Saunders was a tough team to start with-" He says, cracking a smile. "Those girls might have some grit afterall. Especially that Lee's crew- they had a hell of a shot to change the course of that game."

You collapse onto the couch- exhaustion from the day finally overtaking you. You look up at Grampa Russells. "So, how did we do then?" You ask- you had a year and a half of experience. Your grandfather had two years in wartime and another decade of tanking after that.

"Not bad- a few mistakes here and there. It was a lot closer at the end than it had to be."

Better gun: not sure on the math, but I respectfully believe that a 76mm beats a 2 or 6 pound gun.
Better armor: willing to buy that, but would prefer to do math accounting for armor bias (the sloping) before I put that statement in a paper.
Better engine: keyword is proposed, but I know nothing about engines, so I'll defer to you.
>>29311328
Early model shermans had their shells stored on the turret floor, effectively strewn about loosely. add the thin armor and you get why allied troops in North Africa called it "Zippo"

AC never had a 6pdr. The second gun was a redesigned 25pdr with purpose-designed APCBC ammunition. It also had a superb HE round.

The AC 4 had a 17pdr which beats the pants off of every Soviet gun that wasn't the 100mm D-10T.
>>
>>29311561
Did they have the 76mm in 1942?

Also, the 6pdr was a pretty good gun.

And it was entirely due to the sloping why the Sentinel had better armour. It's 50-65mm of armour sloped at 24 degrees from the horizontal, meaning an equivalent of around 120mm.
>>
>>29311649
I've never liked the 25pdr. While it did have surprisingly effective penetration, that doesn't change the fact that it was a field gun in a tank, and that will always mean infantry support for me.

The 6pdr for the Sentinel was a proposed armament tbat would've been accomplished just by swapping it out with the 2pdr gun already fitted. The turret would be cramped, but no modification was needed.
>>
>>29311328
>Better armour
About the same in the hull, with 4-7mm difference. Better sloping on the Sherman
Turret has a pronounced shot trap in the bottom of the side and rear and a large flat faced front that isn't fully armoured.

>better armament
ACI was a 2pdr, ACIII had a 25pdr.

17pdr didn't get the SVDS rounds 'til '44, so penetration is comparable with the 3" AT HVAP on the M10 (which is a conversion from the M4A2).

By the time the SVDS is introduced (1944), the TD conversion is now the M36 with the 90mm M3.

>Better powerplant
12hp/t is the same as the M4

>Better mobility
Same turning circle, same ground pressure, same tracks.
>>
>>29311665
yep, that's better armor, both measured and effective.
Also, if you're asking about the short howitzer (>>29311649 has it right), then I have no idea, Wikipedia does not give a date.

Only on the AC 1. AC 3 upped the front armour to 65mm sloped at a hilarious angle.

Irrelevant. M10 was already in production by September 1942. And if you really want to push the "17 pdr is better than 3" AT", pic related.
>>

>>

65mm at 24deg from horizontal. It's 120mm or armour effective.

>>29311561
>Gun
The 25pdr was used in the AC3, and was much more capable of penetrating armor than either the American 75mm or the Soviet 76mm F-34. Slower rate of fire, though.
>Armor
Much better sloping provided more effective armor than either the T-34 or the Sherman.
>Engine
Okay, this one is a bit more tricky. The proposed Pratt&Whitney engine was functionally quite similar to the Wright/Continental R-975 used in the Shermans, but the Sentinel lacked the synchromesh transmission of the Sherman, which would have resulted in much greater wear on the transmission parts, not to mention a godawful grinding noise on account of the straight-tooth gears. The T-34 had a fuckhueg diesel that produced more power outright than either radial, but was also heavy as shit and had reliability only matched by the first run of Panthers.
>>
>>29312308
Actually, the upper hull of the Sentinel was 50mm at 24 degrees, which gives an equiv. thickness of 122.9mm according to http://www.panzerworld.com/relative-armor-calculator

65mm was for the rounded lower hull

If you're talking about the role of the Sentinel as a tank killer then you have to compare the M10 conversion of the M4, simply because the M4 was not designed to engage tanks.

That would make the actual thickness of the armour something like 25mm

>>

Using it as a medium in what sense? Infantry support would kill the Sentinel in short order as it's a cruiser, not an infantry tank.

Tank vs. tank? The 75mm was enough at the time to engage the Pz III and Pz IV tanks in the North Africa campaign, though the 17 pdr would definitely be lethal over a longer distance.
>>
>>29312718
25-30mm of actual thickness in the frontal armour, and 45mm for the rest, does not to me make a tank that weighs 28 tons, especially when armed with a 2pdr. It's not especially large

"Well, the big one was splitting your forces there at the end." He says. "Could've kept your forces together- at that point you were an overmatch if they attempted to attack you head on, and you would've had a much easier time taking them if they'd gone defensive." He walks over and takes a seat on his La-Z-Boy. (One of the larger possessions he'd had dragged across the Pacific.) "Overall, you were too cock-sure and aggressive, especially considering Kay's superior numbers- you might knock one of them out, but if you've got four tanks firing at you, they're gonna get lucky before you're finished."

"Yeah, well..." You say dismissively- you thought you'd done well. That Oorai had done well.

"Yeah, well, you're gonna lose eventually if you keep fighting like that." He says, cutting you off. "Easy for you to be a cowboy when its a game, but your aggression would've gotten you, your tank and your crew killed. Maybe not the first fight, hell you might've even made ace. But eventually aggression, if it isn't tempered, will cause a mistake." He balls his hand into a fist and makes the motion of an explosion with it. "Boom. Dead heroes."

>>
>>29313872
There were many nicknames revolving around lighters, I just remember the slogan of some lighter company being "lights on the first strike, every time" , and the British used it ironically, since the M4, as sentinel excellently describes it, exploded if anything looked at it wrong.
>>
>>29313555

>>
>>29314039
Bullshit. The M4 was designed to be able to kill medium and light tanks quite successfully, and this was well before the Tiger was known about. It could soundly defeat P4s and down penetration wise, and the 76mm gun was in development and production well before it was seriously needed.

Tank Destroyer doctrine was a whole other kettle of fish rather than 'lol TDs for TD, Tanks for Infantry Support'.
http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USA/ref/FM/PDFs/FM17-10.PDF
Official doctrine paper. Medium and Light tanks can furfill the anti-armour role.
>>
>>29314039
The problem is that the source is internally inconsistent - elsewhere on the page it states the AC 3 had the 65mm of armour which was *then* sloped at 24fH.

Plus, i've been inside the AC 1s at Bovington and Puckapunyal and the AC 3 at The War Memorial (back when it was out on public display). I can absolutely guarantee you that the front armour is not 25mm thick. It is at least twice that thickness.
>>
>>29314039
M4's may not have been designed to engage tanks, but they still did a remarkable job at it when they were fighting things in their own weight class. The 75mm was more than capable of taking out Panzer III's and IV's, and the Jap tanks lit up as soon as anything bigger than a grenade hit them.

Not really. The Japanese and the Soviets/Mongolians had been having spats with no real resolution from the end of Japanese intervention in the Russian Revolution onwards. Khalikin Gol didn't have particularly good record-keeping on either side, and the disparity in casualty estimates between the Japanese and Russian estimates, as well as some internal GRU reports indicate that the battle wasn't nearly as lopsided as Zhukov claimed. In actuality, it mostly just spurred the Japanese to develop more effective aircraft, and the Soviets to update their armored corps.

>>
>>29314815
By using typical Russian tactics. Humiliating losses and phyrric victories by any other nation's standards were old hat to the Russians after the Russo-Japanese war and the clusterfuck that was the Eastern Front of WW1. The conflicts surrounding the Russian Revolution were just as catasrophic, with the Soviets losing wars of independence to Poland, all three Baltic states, Finland, and the Allied forces attempting to enforce some sense of order in the Ukraine and Russia proper.

The early unified USSR was no better. Even though the Great Purge didn't actually kill off nearly as many officers as it's portrayed as, it set back Soviet doctrine by decades, which lead to utterly awful performance by the Red Army in the Winter War and during the Nazi drive to Moscow. Remember before this point,in spite of (or more likely due to) the 5-year plans, the USSR was either unable or (depending on who you ask) unwilling to feed its entire populace with domestically-grown food, let alone equip an army capable of holding from Poland to the Urals.
>>
>>29314815

By doing almost every possible thing wrong.

Flat out, without Kharkin Gol and the Talvisota, the Russians would have lost. They won WW2 by NOT doing what they did in those wars. They's still be going after land battleships, commisars, and missupported combat arms if those two conflicts hadn't happened.

You look across the table at your grandfather. "You sure you want to spend the day with a bunch of kids?" You ask after you gulp down a mouthful of eggs. "We're all going to be loud, delinquent, listening to our Hip Hops and newfangled rock-and-roll music..."

"I'll have you know that I partied with the Grateful Dead back in the 70's..." Grandpa says, pointing a finger at you. "You kids ain't got a clue how to party anymore- we'd help them tear down at the end and then go get sto-ahem." He stops before outright stating any illegal behavior.

You blink at him. "Grateful Who?"

"Bah! Kids these days..." He says. "I'm coming along! Miho already invited me." He says, leaning back victorious.

You, Grandpa Russells, and Miho meet with the rest of the group heading for the mainland at the ferry terminal, down near the schoolship's waterline. Anglerfish team is represented, less Saori and Mako who'd went out yesterday. Though Richard and Patrick are there.

The Trip from the schoolship to the town of Oorai takes nearly four hours- not a short trip by any stretch. During this time you nearly lose your lunch again before Miho, evidently adapting to your sea-sickness, passes you some salt pills, which makes the rest of the trip much easier on you.

It's nearly one in the afternoon before you're at the hospital- the Anglerfish girls pool their money and get Mako's grandmother a nice bouquet of flowers. Your grandfather, though, looks a bit off.

You shrug as you enter the elevator that'll take you up to Grandma Reizei's floor and, as soon as the doors open again, you can hear a commotion. "I'm fine! We're getting out of here!" An older woman shouts.

As you walk closer, you can hear Mako's voice, quiet compared to the caterwalling grandmother: "You need to lay down. The doctor says you need rest."

You and Miho are the first into the room and, confronted with newcomers, the ruckus immediately pauses. "Why I'll be..." Mako's grandmother practically whispers. "James? No... You're too young..."

You blink, opening your mouth and looking at Miho, who shrugs, as surprised as you are. From behind you, you hear your grandfather enter the room. "It's been too long, Hisako." Your grandfather says quietly.

Wait. What?

Romantic...or potentially a bit weird if gramps and her decide to get back together since that'd make sleepyhead your...2nd cousin by marriage I think.

You approach the group to talk to Rick, as you're walk over you notice the gaggle is staring at the two of you
“I think they're intimidated” John whispers to you from the corner of his mouth

“Where's the most confident one” you wonder trying to figure out who to mess with them "gotta put them in their place"

You glance over each person making sure not to maintain eye contact until you spot the most dominant one
“There” you think upon seeing a girl slightly taller than the rest talking to Rick, her head moving back and forth between you and Rick

As your glance continues covering the rest of the group you watch through your peripheral waiting for the leader to look back

STRIKE

Your eyes snap back up to meet her's

LOCK

It takes but a second for her to realise and another to look away. By that time you're upon the group and making your way through to speak with Rick

You catch the tail end of the conversation between Rick and the girl “if you lose repeatedly, I'll put one of the Senior teams in for the next match, try though”

“fine” she seems to accept the conditions and walks away, the group she appears to command disperses with her

“What's up Rick?”

“That was a bad thing you did back there”

His face is a blank sheet, you don't know what he thought of it

“They're only fifteen” Rick continues “you're messing with their confidence doing that”

You zone out to ponder on this and to try find a suitable answer “they started it... but I am older and supposed to be more mature... it's not like we didn't have to go through the same intimidation... why should they?.. point”
You zone back in to find John and Rick talking “Adam told me about you when they dropped off the tee-thirty-two, said you were working at a Scaffolding Company”

“Yeah, I was promoted to Assistant Manager recently” John replies with joy

“You know, I don't know that much about you” John says, trying to keep the conversation going

“Well, I'm retired now, I used to fly B-52s out of Barksdale up until 1994” his voice softens as he reminices “was given my Command after Vietnam war, but I got my shot in with the Gulf war, those were the days”

You chime in “just like Major Kong”

He wags a finger at you “easy boy”

“What did you want to talk about?”

Rick scrabbles through the papers clamped to his clipboard “lets see here...”

“Already forgetting things it seems”

“Just you wait sonny, no one escapes the ravages of time” he replies with a snicker

“Here it is. Your first match is a two on one, you're the one” he continues reading off his clipboard “oh right, those girls you intimidated are one of your opponents”

>[2/?]
>>
>>29317388

You clear your throat after hearing the last remark
John lightly elbows you “nice one”

“Okay, when's our first match?”

“It's nearly eight now, you'll be up in an hour once the first match is over”

“Who are we going up against...I mean like what tanks are we facing?”

“A Lee and an em-four-ay-one, those girls from before will be in the Sherman. They're the best of the Junior teams, the Lee is the second best so there should be a challenge”

“Maybe” you say pondering on how good they are compared to the teams you faced before retirement

“They did give St Vincent's a run for their money”

You recollect Rick telling you about the other School the first day you met “the Private School”

“Yeah that's the one, had a six-on-six a few weeks ago” he says with a hint of pride “didn't do too shabby for a Public School and a Club”

“Was it elimination?” John inquires

“No, it was...uh, that one where you have to destroy the flag tank” he continues trying to remember the details “the Pro teams seem to like that match style, I cant stand it, every match seems to end with one team throwing everything they have at the flag”

>[3/?]
>>
>>29317399

“How close was the match?” you ask trying to get a feel for their skill

“The other team had three tanks left, it doesn't sound that good but St Vincent's was using Jumbo Shermans and one of those German Tank Destroyers”

“That's pretty good” you say aloud, internally you're thinking about how effective their teamwork is considering they took out 3 tanks they had no chance of penetrating from the front unless they were shooting HVAP

“Were they using H-VAP?” you ask

“We can't afford it, but I'm pretty sure St Vincent's always shoots H-VAP no matter there opponent”

“Those kinds of people”

“Yeah, but it's legal, and they're our only competition in the area so we can't really pass it up” Rick finishes up “I gotta go talk to the rest of the crews, be back here in an hour for a final brief, and don't go messing with the other crews”

Rick departs with a wave and you turn to John, “I'm going to check on Hamish, make sure the tank is okay, you go do something... I dunno”

“I think I'll hang around out here”

“Mmkay” you say to John

You depart as Rick did, with a wave

You enter the hanger to find most of the crowd has dispersed, you see Hamish working on the visible side of the tank and the telltale of Rob's head working on the otherside
“What's up guys?”

“Finishing up the extenders” Hamish replies “Bert, he's the one that was giving the History lesson, I think he's doing something with the Radio”

You reply to Hamish while climbing onto the trackguard “yeah I know who he is”

“That's pretty simple” you pause while climbing up upon hearing a female voice

“Now who could that be” you wonder

Your ascent continues until you're leaning over the Commander's Cupola. There's a girl sitting in the Commander's seat, your seat, talking to what looks like Bert

You lower yourself until your're lying on the turret with your head nearly inside the Cupola
“Watcha doin?'”

She looks up at you, it's that girl you were talking to before

She doesn't waste a moment in her reply “Oh, Berts just showing me the tee-thirty-two's Radio”

“I could never figure out how to use that thing, although I never tried because we didn't need it”

“Who's we?” her face contorts trying to make sense
