Ghosts of Retribution are on the move. Those respobsible for the terrible betrayal at Varda are going to feel pain. Tonight we are expecting mass executions of Ecclesiarchy officials, lots of gunboat diplomacy and maybe even a Sector-wide civil war between Astartes and the Ministorium.

If you are new and want to join in, here is our chat: http://client01.chat.mibbit.com/?channel=%23RisingSons&server=irc.Rizon.net

Take Kest and Ursus aside before the court hearing:

>Gentlemen, none of us want sector wide instability, but you see I serve my brothers just as they serve me, and they demand vengeance. They place the entirety of the blame on the Iron Monks as a whole, due in no small part to your previous.....'interference' in our affairs, does the name 'Clarus' ring a bell? If the Iron Monks were to provide them with sufficient reparations for the crimes committed by Haran Dreifus, payment for lost brothers and destroyed material, such a sign of genuine regret would do much to calm their fury. Of course, they will not be truly satisfied until Dreifus his hunted down, but it would certainly make them stop desiring the deaths of Iron Monks priests wherever we go.

Its not that my marines want your money, otherwise we'd demand much more than just the value of what was destroyed. What we want is a sign that the Iron Monks are genuinely regretful of what occurred, and want to make amends. Such a display would make my brothers much less.....homicidal towards the Iron Monks.

Kestus is extremely hostile to the ideas you proposed:
>I am afraid Ecclesiarchy does not represent the interests of the Iron Monks and neither do the Iron Monks represent Haran Dreifus or his twisted machinations. I am not able to grant your requests - remember that I have already agreed to bring all those men who are not directly involved in this transgression to your judgement.

Larion Ursus however is a little bit more supportive of your demands:
>I think, that some compensation should be provided by Ecclesiarchy due to the fact that it was under the Ministorium banner that Dreifus managed to trick honourable Astartes into believing him... I will not get involved into financial matters, but I will personally sign the decree banning Monstrum: Adeptus Astartes in the boundaries of Sector Deus and Hive-Bishop Fidorius Pax will no longer be welcome to preach in the Capitolis Sectorum. No, Astrobelus, I have made up my mind.

Kest is forced to agree with Ursus' decision regarding Fidorius Pax and his damned book, however if you will want any compensation, you will have to find another way to get it. Alternatively you can always use power...

Or do you wantonly give out the power to take over worlds to men who seem to turn into heretics at the drop of a hat?"
"As well as the men currently in our possession, the men who have surrendered also lie within Varda for judgement, which if not repaid in coin, will have to be worked away with sweat and blood."

>The Ecclesiarchy might not represent the interests of the Iron Monks, and the Iron Monks might not represent Haran Dreifus and his actions, but Dreifus certainly represents the Ecclesiarchy and the Iron Monks and unless both make amends they show that they not only cannot control their subordinates but are not willing to pay for their misdeeds. It is their negligence that lead to this betrayal and it is their responsibility to make right. Dreifus was acting under their banner. Now you stand in the Halls of Justice in Tachion Primaris. This grandiose palace is the place where all the major Imperial disputes are being settled in the name of Emperor. Fortunes of whole noble dynasties rise and fall here, saints are being declared heretics and villains are announced to be heroes. Sometimes one word said at the right time here can decie the fate of the worlds and the population of millions. As your Thunderhawk roars over the ashen sky of the Hive-world towards the Halls of Justice, you notice tens upon tens of thousands of people rushing towards the palace. And these are not just some commoners, that kind of people are not even allowed here, these people are nobles, merchants, priests and military officers, all rushing to see or at least to listen to the greatest trial of their lifetime. Astartes, Angels of Death, are accusing Ministorium, Servants of the Emperor, of high treason. This is something that could shake the foundations of the Segmentum itself. Brother Pilot Asteus nods looking at the crowds below:
>They are right to come to watch this, milord. We are going to get justice served today, one way or another.
He pats Thunderhawks' weapon controls lovingly.
>Make sure to make them pay. For Volion, for Laren and even for that bastard Ardius. For all the brothers who gave their lives defending our Realm. Make them pay, milord, and we shall shed our blood in a thousand battles more for you.
As you step down onto the roof of one of the magnificent towers surrounding Halls of Justice, Larion Ursus approaches you, surrounded by his Honour Guard. Your men give a sincere salute even if their duty here is not to you directly. However Larion also wears the insignia of Iron Monks on his left shoulder. A clear political statement, showing that he trusts the marines, but values Ecclesiarchy too.

He even goes as far as to distribute for free the copies of his book to the important guests who are going into the trial, so that they would "know the enemy that they are dealing with". +1 to Ecclesiarchy cause
+Lord Governor Kerius Dermont sends his greetings, but is unable to attend the trial due to the fact that Mormark is under quarantine and it could have political consequences.
+White Preachers have not sent a representative, they clearly do not want to antagonize Iron Monks in this situation. Or maybe they know something more about this..?

She is clearly unsure how to treat this situation. The last time you were on trial, she was your opposition, but many things changed since then.
+Someone you would have never expected to appear is Gaius, who marches into the hall with two of his brothers, bearing full parade armour, loudly exclaiming his greetings to the world of Tachion Primaris from the Ultramarines Chapter and his support for the Astartes in need, Ghosts of Retribution. Ladies and Gentlemen of the court, the Imperial World of Varda was attacked, invaded, and ransacked by the Iron Monk Bishop-Marhsall Haran Dreifus. This is nought but fact, backed up by the testimonies of the crew of the Frigate Strongback, who heroically rebelled against their officers when they realised they were fighting the loyal Adeptus Astartes.
Several days of fierce fighting resulted in the deaths of 74 Imperial citizens at the hands of Dreifus’ men, including Protheran Refugees [state this whilst looking at Engel], 86 Battle Brothers of the chapter, and 419 Skitarii warriors of the Adeptus Mechanicus.
It is true that it was under Dreifus’ direct orders that these crimes were committed, and indeed everyone has expressed desire in hunting him down for them. However, I believe responsibility should ALSO be placed the Iron Monks, surely if a man such as Dreifus rose from a common street preacher to a Bishop-Marshall in just a few short years, there must have been others facilitating him. Indeed, the Iron Monks have shown nothing but contempt for Adeptus Astartes, as evidenced by Hive-Bishop Pax’s book ‘Monstrum: Adpetus Astartes’, give it a read [Looking at Gaius], it contains nothing but lies and propaganda designed to rail the populace again the Space Marines. Surely so actively encouraging internal strife within the Imperium with no provocation is nothing less than heresy?
I demand that those inside the Iron Monks responsible for his meteoric rise to power, as well as the obscene military might he had at his disposal, be immediately declared heretics for their crimes [Demand 1]. Furthermore, I demand the Iron Monks to provide reparations for the damage caused by their forces in the attack, broken down like so:

>Servants of the Imperium. I am here today to demand justice for the treacherous betrayal of Iron Monk Bishop-Marshal, 'Haran Dreifus', which not only all but destroyed the capital of Varda, Novomark, but ended in the deaths of 86 Astartes, 419 Scitarii cohorts, more than 8817 traitor Iron Monks, and 74,000 Vardian civilians.

>While I am ashamed at my failure to do my duty as an Astartes and prevent such grievous loss of innocent life, it is clear who here deserves condemnation. I called the Ecclesiarchy for reinforcements against a potential threat. My astropaths discovered an unkown fleet heading, in force, to Varda. I feared that they planned to attack, and my men were greatly outnumbered. We were not prepared for war, so I called for the aid of the Ministorum, and received a dagger in the back. It turns out that the aid and the attack were one and the same! The fleet my astropaths had detected was Dreifus's. From the very beginning he had planned to raise his sword against his brothers, against loyal Imperial citizens. There are few worse crimes, and those responsible must pay.

Not done yet.

>Some would have you believe that the only person responsible was Dreifus, that this was an isolated act of a renegade, unsupported by his fellow Iron Monks, but this is a lie. It is clear that Dreifus's heretical beliefs are not special; but common in his sect. It is only because of the support the Iron Monks and the Ecclesiarchy offered him that so many died. Even now, Hive-Bishop Fidorious Pax preaches heresy against the Imperium, outside this very courtroom! He hands out the book, 'Monstrum: Adeptus Astartes' which portrays the Protectors of Mankind, the Children of the Emperor, as nothing but blood-thirsty battle-mutants, 'monstrum bellarius'. He calls for humanity to crusade and destroy their very protectors? Do you not see the heresy? Is it not obvious how not only accepting, but encouraging such beliefs lead to this tragedy? This book and its heretical contents threaten not just the stability of not just this sector, but the entire Imperium! If not for the Astartes, Mormark would have been destroyed by the Heretek. If not for our Emperor's many guardians countless of worlds would be lost to the Ruinous Powers, and despite the, the local Ecclesiarchy still allows this heretical belief to exist and even supports the sects spreading this disgusting doctrine.

At the end of your speech Gaius rises from his seat before anyone else and strikes his power armoured fist into his chest, then extends his hand with his fist clenched tight and roars at the thousands of spectators:
>AVE ASTARTES! AVE IMPERATOR! ULTRAMARINES ARE WITH THE GHOSTS OF RETRIBUTION! ALL HAIL THE CHAPTER MASTER!
The hall erupts in thunderous applause, they are taken by this display of loyalty and duty to them, the citizens of the Imperium of Man. Astrobelus Kest takes the stand after you:
>I will be brief, my friends, because I feel that there is not much to discuss here. First of all let me state that I understand and value the duty that Adeptus Astartes are doing for us. However sometimes their duties take them to places and make them do things that are not exactly in their jurisdiction. As we have seen, their brutal attack on the Covenant of Adeptus Sororitas two decades ago was a disaster that came out of their meddling in business that didn't involve any threats to the Imperium. However this is not an excuse for what happened at Varda. Haran Dreifus is a heretic, a mad dog that needs to be hunted down and his head put on a spike. What he did is worse than heresy, it's treason! But my friends, tell me, do you really think, that I or my Church, are responsible for the deeds of a single madman! I am in business of funding charity houses and spreading Imperial faith, not waging war! And even in the cases when Ecclesiarchy needs defence, we always make sure to follow the guidelines of Decree Passive just as they have been laid out. If you would inspect our temples even today, you would not find a single armed man there who would serve us. Our guards are pilgrims, the ships that carry us to the stars are all manned by volunteers to the Imperial cause, the soldiers who destroy the hereticsa at our request belong the Noble houses that support the Word of the Emperor. Not single one of those men, ships or machines answers to me or to any brother in my organisation. Even our ranks, such as Leutenant-Bishop, are mere tradition, left from times when this Sector was colonised during the Reclamation Crusade. I find it disgusting and low that Chapter Master claiming that we are not holding up the sacred laws of Sebastian Thor.

Or would you want us to discard and turn away every single person who wants to protect Ecclesiarchy with the strength of his arms? Would you want to leave Ministorium wide open for bandits, heretics and aliens to rob? Would you want to make revered priests travel to preach into the distant stars without any protection? If it is so, I would say that you are a madman! This faith was built by books and by swords, taking away either of them will destroy not only it, but the whole Imperium! What would be your next wish, so that we would forbid Imperial Guardsmen praying to the Emperor, because it also violates Decree Passive? Or maybe you'd want to dissolve holy orders of revered Sisters? Please, Chapter Master, let us try to close this wound, don't make it wider by allowing your uncontrolled hormones cloud your mind. I suggest following settlement - we will help you find and punish heretic Dreifus in any way you wish. We will even go as far as to give you the men who you think are responsible for the Betrayal at Varda. Also, as our final gift to you we wil even ask revered Fidorius Pax to leave for Sector Paxia or Sector Scarus and to cease his preaching. People of Capitolis Sectorum, tell me, are my suggestions not generous and full of love? Let us rise up and praise the Emperor, if we wish the Chapter Master to accept these demands!

Larion Ursus smiles at you:
>Yes, just as I said, I will declare that book heretical, but it will go easier if Kest agrees with me. That's why he is offering this as a concession in court. Don't worry, Pax is history.
Gaius laughs heartily when you approach:
>My friend, I am glad to see that you are winning this damned trial. Such a shame to see warrior such as you tied down in this beaurocratic mess, when you could be out there ripping the spine out of some accursed xeno! Don't worry, I am sure you are going to win this! Oh, and don't worry about Pax. Madmen like him arise every couple of centuries, I heard Space Wolves once had problems with religious extremists in Segmentum Solar... Well, it ended in a bloodbath and after they left led to civil war in that Sub-Sector, so I can only admire your patience and choosing to solve this problem using reason.
Trianon is very thoughtful:
>I am not sure. They have heard about it even before the trial was announced, that's for sure. I think they still have suspicions about us - we are a new, unproven Chapter, by their standards. However they know that not everything in the Sector Ecclesiarchy is as nice and tidy as Kest tries to show. Inquisitions is a wildcard, Chapter Master, we must treat them carefully.

Astartes: 4 (-3) (+0) (+1 support from vjvjv)
Ecclesiarchy: 2 (+1) (- 2)
CLOSE VICTORY 2:1 (you will achieve minor gains and what was agreed with Kest)
In the end, after 11 days of trial, Nestus Margon declared following verdict:
>Dear ladies and gentlemen, men of cloth and men of sword, humans and Astartes, this court has finally reached it verdict on the case of Betrayal at Varda. From this midnight, following decisions must be implemented by all loyal Imperial servants in all branches of service.
>1. Haran Dreifus and anyone who is with him now bears the mark of Traitoris Extremis, he is to be hunted down and presented living or dead to the Adeptus Astartes of the revered Ghosts of Retribution Chapter. To encourage this, Imperial Authorities will offer the reward of 10 million thrones for anyone who delivers him, alive or dead. We believe, that Ghosts of Retribution will offer a reward of their own in addition to this.
>2. The list of following 129 priests who have been in various ways related Haran Dreifus over his career is to be inspected by Ghosts of Retribution and they are to be judged as they for their involvement or lack of thereof in the transgression against the Chapter. This investigation is left to the Chapter to conduct.
>3.Ecclesiarchy will grant following compensation to the Ghosts of Retribution because of the fact that it was indirectly associated with attack - 30 million thrones to the Chapter and 30 million worth of thrones to the people of Varda. This can be repayed by building infrastructure, schools, temples and other things of value to the local communities.
>4. Hulks in the space around Varda are from now on property of the Ghosts of Retribution, so is "Strongback" as soon as the criminals are delivered to Imperial justice authorities(look at 5). Ships under Dreifus command, if taken in battle, will become property of the person or organisation who will capture or kill Dreifus.

>5. Participants in the munity of the Imperial Navy Escort "Strongback" are sentenced to 25 years of working in the slave gangs aboard the Imperial Navy Cruiser "Theseus". Leaders of the mutiny, including ex-Starboard Gun Battery Sergeant Fedoric Zurich, are sentenced to death by crucifixation in the plaza in front of St. Evangelions Cathedral in Tachion Primaris. Families of the mutineers will not receive any compensations associated with the death of serving sailor and their offspring loses the rights to join Imperial service in any form.
>6. Ecclesiarchy is allowed to accept support from it's armed patrons and no one is allowed to challenge this for a 100 years or until another similar incident happens.
>7. For the next 100 years priests of Iron Monks allegiance will not be allowed to enter Varda system without invitation.
