You lean out of your cover and fire few rounds towards the enemy, before you move back to reload. You see as The Player's head gets blown to bits, while he tried to rush down the enemy. Brilliant not-usage of cover. Mission failed. Again. Finally, he decides it's enough failure for today and exits the game. Hey, he even decides to call it a night. Break time!

"Good shooting today guys!" you say to your comrades and enemies alike, as you wrap things up behind the game's menu screen.

You're Jenny MacGregor, U.S. Marine from the "Call of Honor 4: Modern Battlefield", an FPS game. You have a very minor role in the game's story, but at least you get a unique model and non-generic voice.

You move out of your game's directory with your rifle slung over the shoulder. You stretch as you walk. Had to repeat the same part of the game like eleven times, because The Player couldn't figure out that he has to move just a little bit forward to stop the endless spawning of mooks. Gotta love modern game design. After few steps, you hear a roar of engine. You turn around to see familiar looking armoured vehicle.

"Hey there Panzer IV! How's it going in the Universe of Tanks?" You ask.

The sound of the engine goes up and down in short succession and her gun sadly points downwards.

"T-34 again? Awww, don't you worry. I bet that you'll show her the power of GERMAN STEEEEEL next time." You pat her mudguard.

That cheered up your friend, causing her gun to go up and down in joy. You giggle at it, as she tells you some news in tank-speak.

"A new game? And you don't even know its genre? Alright, lead the way fräulein."

You clamber on the Panzer IV's hull and knock twice on her turret to show that you're ready to go. As both of you speed through the game files, she ask you how do you feel about the newcomers.

It's a "new" game from this generation, which means a retread of old ideas. We might get a good cast, we might get a lousy one. We might even get an entire city of people voiced by Brad Swaille and Steve Blum, who the fuck knows.

"Eh, what can I say. Haven't met them yet." You shrug as you lean on her turret. Once in a while a new game gets installed, but that doesn't mean you'll lose your code over it. Panzer IV on the other hand looks way more excited by this fact than you are. She always gets giddy when somebody new comes along. Well, she is a tank after all. She's made for gaining momentum, not just sitting around.

As you drive forward towards destination, you decide to make yourself comfortable a bit. You take off your helmet and loosen your vest. The Player has been playing lots of Call of Honor 4 lately, not giving you much time to rest. Surprisingly, he plays single-player religiously, even though it isn't even that good in your opinion. Maybe he's training for multiplayer. You sigh. Who knows.

You look around the game directories you pass by. Each one of those gigantic gates leads to completely different game. You do notice some familiar titles. Maybe you should make a quick detour and grab a friend?

Oh, you know who else you should grab for the ride. You knock twice on Four's turret to get her attention.

"Turn left on the next gate. We'll grab Hunter with us." You get a nod and she turns sharp left. As you're about to go through the gate, loud alarms starts ringing. What in the world?

"You have been chosen for a random check up. Please wait for the anti-virus software operative." Voice comes out of the loudspeakers.

You roll your eyes. Border control, of course. You swear that even Panzer IV somehow manages to sigh. Still, she complies and stops before the gate. Second later, a rather generic blue grunt zaps right before you, wearing stereotypical security guard attire.

"Names, games and reason of visit." He says with robotic voice.

"Jenny MacGregor from Call of Honor 4 and Panzer IV from Universe of Tanks. We're grabbing a friend. Can you make it quick Norton? We're on the clock here." You point at your wrist. Even though you're operating on quad core CPU, those check ups tend to take awfully long.

He raises an eyebrow as he looks at the two of you.

"Hmmmm... Sorry, I'll have to make a quick scan. Just to make sure you're not transferring anything nasty."

Quick scan your ass. Those things take ages. Gotta come up with better idea.

Drastic situations require drastic methods. You lean closer towards Panzer IV.

"Hey, when I give you the signal, turn your turret around." You whisper and she gives you the tiniest of nods with her gun.

You jump down and walk to the border guard, who's fiddling around on his tablet, preparing the scan for you. You lean over his shoulder, pretending to be interested in what he's doing.

"Can I help you with something?" He says, with synthetic voice of his. You look left and right, as if checking if anybody's listening and then gesture him to come closer. As he does you put an arm around his neck and turn away from your friend.

"I'm not supposed to say it, but my friend here has a gigantic crush on you." He looks at you as if you were a lunatic.

"What?"

"I'm telling truth man! She can't stop talking about you. Must have something for guys in uniforms. You know she's from military game and stuff. She can't even stand your that dashing gaze of yours. Look." You turn him around towards Panzer IV and wave behind his back. Four understands and turns around.

"See how shy she is?" He looks at her. Then back at you, then back at her.

Soon, you're back on your way towards the Beast Hunter, as Norton is waving at you with a goofy grin. Not knowing what exactly happened, Four quizzically revs up her engine at you.

"Oh you know, I just told him that you have hots for him." At first she just continues going forward, but then she starts flailing her turret and gun wildly.

Awwww, she's embarrassed.

"Stop blushing, unless you want me to talk about certain warplane." You say, as you playfully pat her on the gun. She thrashes even wilder. "Okay, okay, chill out before you overheat your engine."

Finally you arrive in the game. The graphics in here use wider palette of colours than brown and grey to which you're used. It's a nice change of setting.

>Check the village.

"Alright Four, let's check the village."

Soon you arrive at the village, as its residents welcome you cheerfully. They might be only generic NPCs, whose job is to stand around and give almost identical fetch-quest all the time, but they like to take a break too. You stop in front of the local water-hole. If somebody wants to relax in this place, that would be their first choice.

"I guess you'll have to wait here, unless we plan on doing some property damage." You jump down on the ground and open the creaky wooden door of the tavern.

You're greeted by sounds of music and people talking, drinking, laughing and having a good time in general. The place is cramped with people, some from different games even. You can't blame them, this place has this cozy RPG inn feeling to it. Also, those Japanese game have the weirdest drinks on the menu.

Now, where she might be... Ah, she's at the bar. You make your way towards it and place your hand on her shoulder.

"Got some free time or are you busy obtaining five sea sponges in less than 10 minutes?" She turns around toward you with annoyed look, but then lightens up when she sees you.

"Jenny! Finally nice to see your Marine mug." You shake hands.

"Couldn't leave all of that fancy grinding to you. Anyway, there's new game in town. Wanna check it out?" You point with your thumb towards the exit.

"Sure. Beats sitting here, waiting for another quest." She finishes her drink and both of you go out. After similarly warm greetings between Panzer IV and Hunter, all three of you move out of the Beast Hunter directory.

"So, do you know anything about that game?" Hunter asks.

"Nope. Might as well be a Tetris clone." You answer.

"Wouldn't that be an exciting neighbour.." Hunter sighs.

"We won't find out by bitching around. Four! Full throttle!" Panzer IV might not be the fastest tank around, but on flat surface she can do wonders.

Moments later, you arrive at your destination. The problem is, you have absolutely no idea what the hell is written on top of the gate leading to the new game. Some wibbly-wobbly symbols, that pretend to be letters.

"The hell is this?" You ask you friends, scratching your head. The quiet roar of engine answers you.

"Japanese?" you ask. "Hell if I know. Hunter, your game is made by the Japs. Can't you read it?"

"I'm localized, I don't know Japanese." She answers. You cross your arms and look at her. Then a little more. And then some. And then a bit more.

"Okay, okay! I know A BIT of Japanese. But I can't make heads or tails from that." She says, pointing at the symbols.

"Whatever. Let's go in." You knock twice on Four's hull and you go through the gate, this time without interruption of some pesky anti-virus software.

After each gate there's a tunnel, which connects the game with the rest of the system. It length varies, but it's usually pretty short. This time though, it's longer and way darker.

"Is this thing corrupted or something?" Asks Hunter, squeezing her eyes at the darkness.

"Doesn't look like it. Maybe that's how they made it. You never know with what the developers might come up with to make their title 'special'." You say. Too bad you don't have a flash light among all of that useless Marine equipment of yours.

Finally, after a long ride, there's a light in the tunnel. Panzer IV speeds up, clearly anxious about all of that darkness. And the game you witness is...

>Quiet Hill 3

You drive through the bright light at full speed. You fasten the strap on your helmet, being almost sure that you'll hit something on your way.

Imagine your surprise, when you found yourself in a free fall. Your vision quickly sharpens in the dim light and you see that you're on your way down towards the ground. You can hear Hunter's scream and how Four hopelessly works her treads.

All you can do is BRACE FOR IMPACT.

You black out for a second, but your programmed the Marine senses take over. Gotta stay sharp. You stand up, clutching your head. You're in one piece, but that still was one hell of a ride. You look around, hoping that your friends made it unscathed. Apparently you are in some parking lot. Four landed on some van, which is in scarps now, but she looks okay. She is a tank after all. At first you have problems with localizing Hunter, but you soon spot her characteristic hat underneath one of the trees. And there she is on one of the branches, out of cold.

You take one last glance around your surroundings. Fog everywhere and the exit gate is all the way up. Who the hell thought it was a good idea to locate it there? How are you even supposed to reach it?

On the edge of your vision, something moves in the dense mist. Sends chills down your spine. You have a bad feeling that this is one of those crazy horror games. They always turn out weird, ESPECIALLY the Japanese ones.

>Check on Four.

"Krupp steel und Porsche engine. Who can defeat me?" Four used to joke. Still, doesn't mean that a tank can survive at least 30 feet fall unscathed. You smack yourself twice on the cheeks to fully wake yourself up as you run towards your tank friend. She doesn't look worse than usual.

"Hey Four, your still with us? Come on fräulein, answer me." You give her few taps on the side. No response. You climb onto her turret and give her few solid smack on the commander's cupola. Her engine comes to life at your third hit. She's okay!

"Good to see that you haven't left us for The Great Blitzkrieg Fields." You say, as you sigh in relief. She moves her gun up and down few times and tries to move out of the van's carcass. She tries and tires, but to no effect. She powers down her engine in a sad tone.

"What?" You jump down and check on her treads. On of them broke in the fall. Damn it. "It's okay Four. We'll come up with something." She moves her turret left and right in panic. She doesn't like the surroundings either. Seems logical. Tanks need some distance and clear view on the target.

You hear some movement through the dense fog. It's getting closer.

Dying outside your game is generally a bad idea. Data recovery is possible, but it's a complicated process that doesn't always succeed.

>Go check on Hunter.

"I have a baaad feeling about this Four." You say, as you're trying to figure out what might be coming from the mist. Better not waste time. You tell your Panzer-friend to hang in there as you check on Hunter.

You jog quickly towards the tree where your friend landed. Looks like she's already waking up, albeit slowly. Probably should help her with that, preferably without climbing that tree. Hmmm...

You remove the magazine out of your gun and make sure that it's empty - safety first! Then you proceed to poke at Hunter's side. Even standing on top of your toes, you can barely make it. Come one, wake up.

You accidentally push too hard, which makes her fall from the branch! Before you can even gasp, she manages to land on all four. Impressive, you must say. She then tries to level herself into standing position, but has some problems with that. You offer your arm for support.

"Ugh, remind me to tell Panzer IV to drive less recklessly." She says, pinching the bridge of her nose.

"She won't be going anywhere soon. One of her tracks broke." Hunter only grimaces at that. You pick up her hat and place it where it belongs - on her head.

Then you notice something - the sound of stopped getting closer. You look where you heard it last time and see a humanoid silhouette. It's far enough that you can't see the details of it through the fog. It appears to be holding something.

"I don't like this." Hunter whispers.

>Call out.

You make sure that your gun is loaded and ready to fire, before you shout toward the figure.

"Hey! You there! We kind of fell into your game. Mind showing us the exit?"

"And you call yourself a marine? They are in their own game, they'll respawn if you shoot them." Hunter whispers to you, as she gets back on her feet.

"Shush, they are new. No reason to be a jerk right from the start." You cut her short, before focusing back on the figure.

Silence. But then, you hear a female voice. And you don't understand jack shit from it.

"I'm pretty sure that's Japanese, though I understand like every seventh word or so." Says your friend. Whatever. As the figure comes closer, you see that it's a young girl in a white vest with dyed blonde hair. The thing in her hand was a handgun, but she raises her defensively to show that she means no harm. Good enough. You lower your rifle. She then starts talking very fast in language that you completely don't understand. She makes plenty of hand gestures to go with it, but the meaning of that charade is completely lost to you, but hey, you understood that her name is "Cheryl". At the end of it, the girl looks completely tired.

"Did you catch that?" You ask Hunter. She shakes her head. Damn. You look back at the blonde girl and give her a goofy grin and a shrug.

She proceeds to tear up and lunge at you with what you recognize as "bear-hug manoeuvre". Thankfully, your senses are sharp and you manage to use Hunter to intercept it.

"WHAT THE F-" she is cut off as the hug connects.

"I think she might like you." You joke at her expense. Still, fact that you can't communicate is a bummer. That dumbass Player must have downloaded non-localized game.

Guess you could snoop around a little bit, but you doubt that Four would be content with staying alone.

>>
>>29283076
Try asking Cheryl if she can at least write English. Do we have a notepad or something? On that note, what does our "inventory" so to speak look like? We have our rifle and some ammo for it, naturally, as well as our helmet and a vest, but anything else?

As for the situation at hand, maybe if we finish the game, we can leave. So we better get moving fast before Player wakes up. Leave Hunter with Four to keep each other company, and have Cheryl lead. It's her game, she probably knows her way around the best.
>>
>>29283076
Wait, don't tanks usually carry spare treads? We should be able to fix four in a bit.
>>
>>29283470
>On that note, what does our "inventory" so to speak look like?

Spare magazines, few grenades, first aid kit and various other trinkets. It's not accurate military equipment that soldiers field, because game developers are lazy and easily throw away details.
>Explore the surroundings with Cheryl

You separate Cheryl from Hunter and regroup at Four. Then you proceed to tell them the plan.

"Okay. As Four is immobilized, we need to split up. We can't live our favourite 25 tons of steel alone though, so Hunter stays with her. I'll take the local and look around." Panzer IV nods with her gun and Hunter gives you a lazy salute. Then you take a moment to pass it to Cheryl, though her attention is kind of drawn towards the bigger of your friends. Guess they don't have that many tanks in here. Bugger.

Miraculously you managed to make her understand that "they stay, we go", though she isn't exactly thrilled with the plan.

You decide that best place to explore first would probably be the direction from which Cheryl came. It's a street leading towards outskirts of what looks like a small town. There's a map hung on a wooden board. Too bad it's still in fucking Japanese, so you can't make most of it.

"Well Cheryl, where should we go now?" You point at the map, hoping to get anything from her. In response, she point at the entire map, says something incomprehensible and then shakes her head furiously. Ah, she probably means "NOPE". That's not very reassuring.

>Go to place marked with a circle and a cross inside. Must be hospital.
>Go to place marked with a simple cross. Church probably.
>Go to place marked with a book. Library? School? Who knows.
>Try to ask Cheryl about something as you go?
>>
>>29283674
>Go to place marked with a circle and a cross inside. Must be hospital.
What could possibly go wrong?
>>
>Go to place marked with a circle and a cross inside. Must be hospital.

Hospital sounds good. They are made for healing people and stuff, aren't they? You point towards it on the map and make a walking gesture with your fingers towards Cheryl. She looks at you with fear, but then nods, clutching the handgun in her hands.

Moving through the streets, you start to think what possibly can be so scary about this game. So far you've only seen... nothing. Well, fog to be exact. Maybe it's one of those games where nothing happens, but the atmosphere itself is pretty spooky?

"So Cheryl, what else can you tell me about this game?" You say, not really expecting that she'll understand it. And you're right - she just looks at you quizzically as if you were from other planet.

Your little "conversation" is halted by the sound of static. Surprisingly it comes from Cheryl. She quickly reaches into her pocket with panic in her eyes. She pulls out a little hand-held radio. It has antennae and all.

"What's that?" You ask. The fact that it turned on by itself probably has some significance. Also, Cheryl looks utterly terrified and nervously looks around. What is she...

Then you notice it. Wish you haven't actually.

It looks a bit like a human, expect extremely obese and slightly bigger than your regular man. Scratch that, it barely resembles human. More like a walking cancer or something.

Guess THAT is what makes this game scary.
