"Look out!"
Erwin Estiban cries out, throwing himself into your side a moment before his body is wracked by lasgun fire, his humble but professional choice of clothing offering no protection as his flesh boils and burns. You recall an argument from long ago, two of the armsmen in your squad debating if las weapons caused flesh to boil and explode or simply seared it into vapor; you reckon they were both right. Even as poor E's body falls upon the cold deck, Morix's voice echos along the metallic bulkheads.

In a moment her men are moving past, escorting an aged couple and a younger man past as Morix offers you a hand up. "You could come with me, Percius. He'd vouch for you, too. No need to explain why you let me go, no more worrying when the Navy will catch up with us and put us all to the sword." The faces of her family linger in your mind, your own sisters suddenly moving with them. The edges of Aquila tattoos peek up from the collars of the armsmen protecting them remind you of Gerard, and soon his face is among their number.

The look of rejection upon Morix's face confuses you, her head turning away to hide the scar that now dominates the left side of her face. Your eyes drift down to poor Erwin as she tells you that someone else will be disappointed, they liked you. One of her men, a face from your previous visit to her ship, asks if he should end your life; No, killing a friend is bad luck. Get out, a bomb left behind them. Who did she say will be disappointed?
>>
>>29237262

Erwin throws himself into your side, his face contorted into a silent shout even before his chest is struck, showering you in his blood. Her face turns toward you, Alica's eyes begging you to save her, even as you let her killers walk past. The world trembles as you stare at the blood covering you, the warmth of it quickly fading to the chill of death. Only a single drop of warm remains, slowly rolling down your face as the sounds of lasguns fade, the voice of an armsman asking if he should kill you slowly returning as he looks to Morix... "Captain?"

"Captain!?"

"Percius!"

Your vision fills with a blinding field of crackling white, a hand forcefully gripping you by the jaw and turning you toward a voice. For the first time in what feels like ages, your lungs fill with air and your vision focuses upon your XO, Elise Eberhardt, her eyes studying you with an in-concealable amount of worry. Something warm tingles as it languidly flows across your cheek, and you numbly run a finger below your eye to wipe at it. The substance contrasts sharply with the coating of E's dried blood that lingers upon your hands...

A streak of clear fluid is slowly absorbed by the blood upon your hand, your vision fixating upon it for a moment. "Captain, are... you crying?"

Elise frowns, her grasp upon your jaw loosening. "Captain, we're underway to intercept Captain Morix's vessel, as per your orders. Kihomi believes we'll be able to intercept them at least an hour before they're able to make a warp jump. We've heard her men planted explosive charges upon Lord Wilson's ship... Is any of that blood yours, Percius?"

"No, its... not mine." Alica's face flashes in your mind, her face contorted like E's. You shiver at the thought.

"You should get cleaned up, Percius. If your sisters see you like this..."

Recent events flood back, feeling almost as if they've been driven into your chest. Erwin's death; Morix's betrayal; Her reasons, family and maybe redemption; Your own betrayal, letting Erwin's killers simply walk past before his blood was cold; Morix's offer: Come with her, leave the wolfpack. Would your crew even follow you upon such a gambit? Let you betray the wolfpack? Emperor help you.

Elise offers you an expression that almost seems alien upon her features before she assertively assists you toward your feet. In what seems like a blur, you find yourself enjoying the warmth of heated water cascading upon your flesh, Erwin's blood washing away slowly and in some spots requiring quite a bit of effort to remove. Something about the fact that you know his essence will be reprocessed by the ship is both comforting and horrific to your mind. The way it spirals around the drain at your feet is almost hypnotic, but it buys you time to think... until the water runs cold.

With the water cold, you quickly set about donning a clean set of clothes and locating Elise. Fortunately, your XO is standing outside your quarters with Ana and Tes, the three women casting worried glances your way. Ana is the first to speak up, true to what you've come to expect of her. "You alright, Captain?"

"Fine. Miss Eberhardt, if I might have a word in private?" Your quarters are the obvious choice, and you simply gesture to invite her in. Tes seems to stop herself from making a comment, her posture slackening like a child being chastised.

"We'll keep your sisters out, but I can't promise I won't have to shoot the hyper one in the leg" smiles Ana, even after you reflexively scowl. As the door closes, you catch the beginnings of Tes giving her fellow armswoman one of her steadily more infamous lectures.

Elise studies you in silence as you attempt to collect your thoughts, then begin to recall the details of your journey aboard Lord Wilson's vessel. Going to look for Captain Morix, Estiban leading you through a veritable maze before throwing himself into you as he spotted the men that ended his life. Your conversation with Morix, her family... how you threw away your weapons and simply let her pass. Her offer that you could come too, and leave the wolfpack behind. The bomb, Estiban's body, Wilson's armsmen, the nightmare while you were still awake in the lighter. Toward the end you're rambling, your mind spiraling back into the horrific details of Alica's mutilated body as her eyes just asked you "Why?" and the Emperor's light wouldn't come for he-
>>
>>29243394

Your mind simply goes numb as Elise squeezes your torso in her arms, her face turned away but still oddly comforting against your shoulder. After you've calmed, she releases you and steps away awkwardly, but you notice the calculating look to her eyes. "You need to get some rest, Percius, and I need to think this over" a small grin forms on her lips for a moment, and she sighs. "I suppose I should ensure the ship doesn't explode on it's own, too. Wouldn't want my still destroyed before it makes me a drink."

Heading for the door, she pauses and turns back. "Do you want me to send Tes and Ana away? Or just leave them be for now?"

Exhaustion overwhelms you in moments, and you awake to find you've slept late into the next day's shift cycle.

A note has been deposited on the desk in your quarters, and beside it rests the small cryptex box your sister Alica said your father wanted you to have. The thought still stirs a small pain in your chest, even after all of these years and what you've done. Emperor save you.

Your stomach rumbles, and you're quite obliged to listen to it's call for food. No need to waste time, however. With a whistle, you call your hat skull from it's idle hat maintenance routines and record a short message for it to deliver to Synne. A quick chirp and the skull is searching for your sister as you exit your quarters, heading for the mess.

Tes seems to have been taking a nap in the officer's mess, and several second-shift bridge crew seem quite happy at your presence, especially after one of them gives Tes a nudge. "Captain! You just sit down and I'll fix you up something!"

One of the crew, a youth that you doubt can even grow his first whiskers, walks by and offers you his thanks for your timing. "Miss Tes is the best cook on the ship, Captain Aurex. Now that you're here she won't stop cooking up chow until we're all too stuffed to move!"

"So if I keep Tes cooking I don't have to worry about a mutiny? Good to know" you state a little more than quietly. The crew around you raise their drinks to your joke. "Here-here, Sir!"
>>
>>29246268

Helping yourself to a pair of the larger chilled water packs, you claim yourself a spot in the mess and enjoy the mouth-watering smells that are soon floating from Tes' cooking. Synne's hug nearly bowls you from the bench, your sister attacking from your flank as your attention drifts toward Tes' coat and the chain of swears aimed at the range she loudly proclaims produces too much waste heat. "Whatcha loooking at, Percius!" laughs Synne as she pushes you further toward the floor and tries to follow your gaze." With a gasp, she turns to you in shock. "Y-you pervert! I bet you ordered her to cook like that!"

All eyes suddenly turn toward you and your sister, then follow her outstretched arm and pointing finger toward Tes. "Wh- what?" Stammers Tes, looking down at her undershirt in confusion, a set of tongs in her hand.

Synne's face soon turns to embarrassment as eyes turn back toward her, the silence absolute beyond the sounds of some heavenly smelling food sizzling. "I thought she was... umm... I..." Tes' bundled coat silencing your sister as it strikes and envelopes her head, a chorus of laughter filling the mess hall as your red-faced sister pouts and sits next to you sourly.

You take a long sip from your water as Synne pouts, a smile slowly creeping upon your face. Fortunately for your sister, Tes quickly arrives with a pair of plates for the two of you, each covered in a wild mixture of vibrantly coloured vegitables and thin slices of sweet-smelling meats. "We found a massive hive of insects that collected something one of the techpriests called 'honey', but it has one hell of a bite to it if you don't cook it a bit."

"Who was the first one to actually try some random substance on a planet we just arrived at?" Synne asks.

"Elise. She wondered if she could make booze out of it" smiles Tes.

You've been busy stuffing a chunk of the meat in your mouth, while the women wasted time that could be better spent filling their bellies...

Your mouth waters greedily as the sweet taste of whatever the Emperor graced your men to find upon that planet, and the thinly sliced meat practically melts in your mouth. Even the oddly colored vegetables soon vanish from your plate, and while Synne is subjected to a bit more ribbing by Tes, you spirit away a bit of her untouched plate as well. 'He who hesitates has already lost' Gerard always used to say. By the time Synne or Tes notice your little raid, you've had your fill and are once again enjoying cool, refreshing water with a smile at the pair. Synne digs an elbow into your side with a mild growl.

"Glad you enjoyed it, Captain" smiles Tes.

Synne picks at her food for a bit before finally exhaling slowly, the last of her sour mood finally fading.

You sit in silence as the remaining crew try to ignore your sister's outburst, Synne herself sitting rigidly beside you with her eyes downcast. She used to sit like that whenever she was in trouble, back when father and mother were alive. You remember they once argued for nearly four hours, leaving Synne outside in the garden until after a fall storm had ruined the dress that father had bought her the day before. All three ended up hugging in the rain as they begged her to forgive them, until your mother loudly declared your father to be at fault and shoved him into a nearby puddle of mud. They'd all come inside later, covered in mud and laughter still upon their faces, much to the dismay of the servants charged with cleaning up the mess. Sweet little Synne.

A passing crewman is quickly tasked to sending an apology to your elder sister Alica, while you head back to your quarters.

Soon you find yourself sitting at the desk in your quarters, staring at the small, black box Alica once said your father wished to give you. The soft clack signals that the box is unlocked, allowing you to open the dark container. The bronze of the cryptex contrasts nicely with the eleven ivory rings of the object, and you once again note the ninth ring carries a capitalized 'M'. The cryptex seems simple enough, beyond the materials used in it's construction. Each ivory ring has the letters and numbers of standard High Gothic upon it, with the only anomoly being the capitalized 'M' of the 9th ring. The engraved wings of an Aquila likely designate the row you have to correctly match to open the device.

A date, perhaps? You set the last seven rings to show the current Imperial year and millenia. '341.M41' Four of the rings remain, however, and you try to think what sort of word your father may have put before a year. You don't recall any polite words he favored with only four letters. Wait, what about a specific date? You quickly turn the rings to the date you ran away, but the cryptex refuses to yield. Perhaps your mother's death? No. The date they married? No. Your birthday? No, it couldn't be that simp-

The end of the cryptex simply slips away from the rest as you set the last ring to spell out the day, month, and year of your birth. A roll of parchment with something within it spills out of the cylinder's body, and the muffled thud startles you. The parchment looks ancient, and you carefully unfurl it to find what seems to be a partial star chart with various markings flowing across it. At the center is another folded note, and you feel a small weight within it's folds. A quick motion of your hand reveals the weight to be a tarnished, bronze aquila necklace and your father's script once more.

"Our family once had a tradition of traveling the stars, and this necklace and map have been passed down from father to son as long as we can trace back. None have ever managed to place the map to it's region of the galaxy, but I hereby continue this family tradition as you take to the stars, my son. Emperor protect you in your travels, Percius."

Very interesting. I say we relieve Elise for a shift, and work on the map and necklace next time we're free.

Returning everything to the way it was, you pocket the tarnished necklace and make your way to the ship's bridge. Elise offers you a weary, but oddly sympathetic smile as she stands from your command throne. Kihomi is oddly absent from the helm, one of her lesser replacements currently guiding the ship. As you take command of the bridge, Elise stands beside you. "Are you alright after your little... spat?" she asks quietly, and the rest of the bridge is quick to busy themselves.

"Worry about her, not me."
"But what about it has spread already? And where is Kihomi?"

Agreed

Elise puts a hand on your forearm and gives it a light squeeze. "You're my first concern, and word has it Tes has Synne under control. You probably wouldn't like a few of the more vivid ideas being whispered, though." Your XO seems to enjoy the look you give her in response. "Good to see you still don't have a sense of humor, Captain. I thought it best that Kihomi be relieved, though Chief Enginseer Yulem insisted we reduce speed slightly due to strain upon the drives. Nothing we can do about the ship's systems having limits, unfortunately." Her finger sharply taps your arm as she laments the last bit of information.

"You may as well tell me every single last idea being whispered Elise, I want to know my crew from top to bottom."

[X] Go get some rack time, Elise.

I am back! If a day or so late.

"Oh, most of them are about how Keller is a poor sod, your sister's points of focus upon a particular cook, and why she wasn't married off. Some of them are evolving into stories of strange noises around her room, though."

"You're kidding, right?"

"Is that an order to investigate them? I could probably make a night or two of it" teases your XO.

"That isn't funny, she's my little sister, Elise."

"Does this mean you'll have to give Tes a talking to about taking advantage of your sister?"

"W-what?"

Elise can't take anymore, and covers her mouth as she bursts into a bit of laughter.

"Go get some rack time, Elise. You're worse than a drunk right now."

"Oh, the ways I could twist that, Captain."

"Emperor. Just go to bed, Elise. That is an order."

Your XO walks away with a chuckle, offering you a little wave. "By your command, Captain. I am relieved."

>Any last retorts?
>>
>>29263749
Sigh with annoyance in tone and give her a little pat on the head, like you would an old dog.
Then turn around and dramatically survey the scene.
>>
>>29263749
Just a sigh should suffice. Though maybe throw in a thanks for earlier.

Elise exits the bridge, turning to stick her tongue out at you with a wink after the crew can no longer see the gesture.

I may have been a little late to the party but it's good to have you back MS. I really like the little intro which both helped refresh the memory and at the same time instill how we kind of lost it for a moment there.

Also I spied that new article that is blank at the moment for the "Kroot". Which has me wondering when we are going to run into them
>>
>>29264559
Who knows what you might find in the uncharted expanses of Sector Corgus?
>>
>>29264602
Very true. It should be a interesting adventure if we survive long enough.
Also I like how it has been confirmed that Tes is the best cook.
How went the job hunt?
>>
>>29264718
Currently in the glorious limbo of "we interview right before christmas break so we can say it took us a while to get back to everyone"

I've got another one being lined up in the near future, but I fear I may not be able to run PQ if I get it.
>>
>>29264816
Well us pirates will be here so keep up the good work and good luck to you in job hunting.

As always thanks for the thread MS.
