Chapter Two, Verse Three.

You are Bartolomè de la Fuente, an ordained priest of the Catholic Church, though you are still young. Following the disappearance of your father, Hidalgo, you were recruited by a woman named Catarina Belmont to take his place within a secret branch of the Church, the Executors, and serve as a weapon to destroy those who would besmirch the name of your Lord.

A confrontation in Sal's Steakhouse went differently than you expected. Wayne Tepes, the Enforcer sent by the Mage's Association, has offered a truce and the combining of efforts to slay the vampire Klaus Hind. His reasoning is that Klaus has stolen something from the Association, but can anything this oddball magus tells you be taken at face value?

"Praise Be." Your body is trembling, either with fear or excitement. You are still frozen in the stance you took to throw the Black Key that split a ghoul from top to bottom. An impossibly deadly throw, even though you just witnessed it. Wayne blanches at you, still playing back the scene in his head.

The two of you had been ambushed. Five ghouls sprung from the wall when you pulled a mysterious lever in the space beneath Sal's. Caught off-guard, the two of you were nearly killed in the tight quarters, but you fought them off with minimal damage. But the real surprise came when you tossed a single blade and bisected the last foe in your path. He never stood a chance, and you are still checking your memory to assure yourself that it was really you who threw that thing, and not some unseen angel.

That was the last of the ghouls; the two of you stand amidst the corpses, victorious. But no closer to finding a way further into Klaus's lair. The Enforcer drops his hands to his knees, panting for breath as he gives you a glance. You need to find some way through, but it looks like he won't be of much help for the moment.

>1. Take a second to catch your breath, and wait for Wayne to help search.
>2. Take a look in the ghoul's hiding places. (1d100)

You check the alcoves where the ghouls were stuffed. Maybe Klaus thought hiding the real entrance behind a trap was the best option. It is quite dark within the little spaces, so you begin to feel around with your hands. After thoroughly checking the two closest alcoves you find purchase in the third. Your fingers brush across what feels like some kind of switch. You find it again and tug, triggering the sound of grinding stone again. The segment of wall with the trapped lever peels open, revealing a long and narrow hallway lit by a few sparse torches.

Wayne props himself against the wall, catching his breath. "Phew! You're on... oh, jeez... on a roll, Bart!" He doesn't seem to have caught his breath yet, and fishes around in his pockets. He pulls out a carton of Carpati cigarettes, only to toss them to the ground. "To hell with--" he gasps in a breath. "with these! They're gonna get me killed!"

You begin to wonder if this Enforcer's really okay, but he pushes a hand out and insists he's fine. He'll just need a minute.

>1. Go down the hallway.
>2. Let Wayne go down the hall first.

You decide to take a quick breather. That was only the first fight of what could be several. You might as well be signing your life away if you don't prepare yourself. It is quiet in these dark tunnels. The passing cars in the streets above are muffled, and distant. It's hard to relax here. There is a feeling that puts you on edge, and the muggy atmosphere exhausts you just by standing around in it. But you collect yourself as well as you can in the span of a few minutes.

Wayne seems to be doing better; he's standing upright again, and his breathing has returned to normal. He's been staring down the hallway for some time, chewing on his tongue and twitching his shoulders. "Do you see something?" you ask him. "A trap?"

He sighs and shakes his head. "Nothing I can tell from here, nah. This whole place is basically one big trap. But Klaus isn't the kind of guy to put... I dunno... big swinging axe-blades that come out of the walls at you in his lair. Not grandiose enough. We should be pretty safe down there."

You gesture down the hall and ask if he'd like to take the lead then. He tips his head at you and says, "Sure." He leads you into the next hallway, whispering for you to stay close. You both step inside and progress inwards. It is dark and unpleasantly hot here, and you can feel little trickling beads of sweat welling up beneath your clothes.

You can see Wayne wiping his brow. He's not doing any better. You walk for quite a distance before relief comes within grasp. An arch up ahead tells you that there's a room waiting. You both pick up your pace, stepping inside a much more open space, whose cool breeze refreshes you."Oh, man," Wayne says. "This is so much bet--"

The door slams shut behind you.

"--ter."

All around you, the stone walls begin to shift and flip over. What seems to be some sort of charm is breaking over the entire space, revealing its true nature. Unusual, oddly-angled planks of wood jut out from every direction, giving the room a prickly and unwelcoming appearance. You feel a pressure on your skin, like something vital is missing from this place.

Wayne looks at you and says something... but you can't make out what he says. There's a loud swirling noise in your ears, and he sounds like he's talking from a mile away. Tepes notices it as well, his eyes dilating in shock as he fails to register his own words. He swivels his head around like a startled dog, glaring at the walls. He opens his mouth and says something again. He's making a more animated motion, like he's raising his voice, but you can still only partially hear him.

"...soundproof...another trap...find the door."

A soundproof room? You try to follow his command and find an exit, but you're distracted by a thumping noise. One that's in time with the organ in your chest. You halt in place as you realize you can hear your own heart beating. And that swirling noise? Your bloodstream.

You suddenly feel quite dizzy, and stumble over to the wall. Your breathing is growing more erratic. Your nerves are getting to you, and this bizarre room won't give you any reprieve. You must find the exit, and quickly.

In a situation like this, it is important to stay calm and focused.

You kneel down upon the floor, though you find it more difficult than usual to do so. Your balance seems to be off. You fold your hands, bow your head, and give a silent prayer. Even in times of danger, a calm mind must be kept to make the proper decisions. You seek what solace you may in the arms of God, but the incessant beating of your own heart is disquieting. It has never before been so present in your mind. It refuses to be shut away to a place where you don't need to think of it. Your own heart, the very instrument that keeps you alive. It is so loud, and moving so quickly, so frantically. Does it always sound like it is so close to just... stopping?

You shake your head, and focus upon God. It is all that can keep those thoughts away. You recite to yourself the book of Exodus It is an uplifting story, and one that bears some relevance to your current predicament. The story of the boy Moses, who grew into the man that would save his people, and deliver them from their place of bondage, to a Promised Land where milk and honey flowed. Through the power of the Lord, he summoned serpents from his staff, plague, death, and fire from the heavens, and even the seas parted before him so his people might cross.

But there is an itching at the back of your mind. The story does not end quite so well as you remember...

No... no, his story did not end there. Nor did it end well. The people he saved were ungrateful to him. Ungrateful to God. They forgot him when he left, only for an instant, and erected a false idol to worship in His stead. They were fools, and at times wicked and fickle. Moses tried to shepherd them towards the true path, but in the end he failed. He struck out violently when words would have sufficed, and disobeyed the Lord. And he was punished for it. His people wandered in a stupor for many years, forbidden to set foot in their destination. And as his flock passed into the Promised Land, he was left behind. He died without ever setting foot in the place he desired most to be.

You are filled with clarity, as the words of your mentor return unbidden. "...you shall take upon yourself the sins that would befall your flock if you were not there. ..."

It has never been your place to seek the moral path. Even the greatest of men will sin, and fall short of His glory. For all the good you do, there shall be evil. And though you shall be punished, those evils are for the good of your flock. This is the path an Executor walks.

Your Faith is now Resolute. (+2 to all rolls. Holy Relics now at 2x effectiveness.)

You stand up, and find yourself oddly balanced, even if it is only for a moment. You see that Wayne is in the corner, balled up. You call to him, but he doesn't hear you. You call again, and his head darts up. His eyes look bloodshot. Just how long were you in prayer? "Door! Found the door?"

Once, twice, and a third time you make a circuit around the room, seeking a way out of this madhouse. You run your hands along every surface, tugging against the wooden planks. They are firm, and resist any attempt at moving them. The ceiling is a similar situation, and the floor as well, though is a small grated floor that suspends you an inch or so above the oddly-shaped wood. You run your hands between gaps for switches, and try to think of words to speak that might activate some enchantment upon the exit.

All of these efforts fail. You find nothing. You seem well and truly trapped here.

*Clank.*

What was that? A shifting noise beyond the room captures your attention. Like someone bumping into a metal object. Someone crawling through a duct. Or some THING. You hear it again, from a different direction. This time it is below you. You hear the light tinkling of feet upon some hidden passageway under your feet as it slithers about. The sounds grow, coming from your left, your right, above you, behind you. Just beyond this room, you hear what must be an army gathering. And they are getting closer.

You call out to Wayne. "Something approaches! Be ready!" You pull two more Black Keys, and stand ready for the onslaught. Your companion tries to stand beside you, but he isn't on his feet for more than a few seconds before his legs begin to wobble uncontrollably. The rest of him follows, and he falls flat on his rear. He is breathing heavily, and his eyes are darting about, confused. Something's thrown off his equilibrium, it seems, and he can no longer stand. What's doing it?

The sounds are growing closer now. There are scratches against the outside wall. Terrible, repetitive scratches that cause your body to twitch and shiver every time they rasp in your ears. You try to find the source of the sound, but it's coming from every direction. You can't imagine how many there must be, nor do you wish to. The formless shapes beyond your sight begin to pound. A low moaning rumbles in your ears, and then your chest. It is joined by a chorus of dozens more voices, filling your head with their mindless noise. It is enough to madden you.

"COME OUT!" you snarl at them. How dare they hide, and taunt you with such noises? Their scratches are becoming louder, and closer. They're almost through the walls. Any second now...

Any second. You close your eyes and wait for the sound of their arms crashing through the walls...

But it never comes. The moaning stops, and the scratching passes. You open your eyes. The sounds are gone, and the room is unchanged. "What is... what is happening?.."

You are now Disturbed.

Is it over, you wonder? Has the nightmare passed? You feel dizzy. Perhaps you should sit, like Wayne is. You look down at him, still collapsed on the floor.

A shadow in the corner of your eye watches you.

You snap back to look at it, but it has passed. A tiny sound carries past you. "Bartolomè..."

You shake your head. It is a shadow, and nothing more. There is something foul about this place, something that is playing with your senses. "Begone, shadow!" you threaten the emptiness. "Take leave of my mind, and do not return!"

At first, it seems there will be no response. The room is as silent as always, save for the ever-present pounding of your heart. But then there is a stirring. Only a teasingly few steps away, the light bends. A black form steps forth from the air, running a hand through fluffy hair you cannot discern the detail of. There is nothing that you can see of the shadow's face, and yet, the way it carries itself is so taunting and familiar. The shadow extends a hand to you. "Bartolomè..."

You gasp. That voice. You would recognize that voice anywhere on Earth. The same voice that would read to you at night, and coo you to sleep when the demons in your dreams were too terrible to face alone.

How could this be the work of Klaus Hind? How could he create such a perfect imitation? You tell yourself that it must be an illusion. And yet.

The shadow turns away from you, and approaches the wall. The wooden plans fold back and are pushed away. A doorway that was never there before appears and opens for the black figure. It steps through, and is gone, leaving you slack jawed and alone as you watch it go.

"Father?"

You proceed at a quick pace, but remain on guard. Whatever this vision is, it cannot be allowed to escape. You leave the soundproof room behind and pursue it deeper into the vampire's lair. You hear Wayne saying something, but your addled ears do not pick it up. The torches have grown more sparse, and you are barely keeping up without losing your footing. But some distance ahead, you continue to see ominous shadows pass by the lights on the wall. This thing is still within reach.

It turns a corner, and you come after it. It has disappeared, and here the hall splits. You are in a circular chamber, with three halls going in different directions. The torches have stopped here, and the darkness is too thick to peer deeper in. Above each passage there is a symbol. On the left, there appears to be a yellow flame. On the right, the image of a door is burdened by many heavy chains. And in the center, a queer picture that you do not understand. It is the vague image of a man, but from his legs comes a scorpion's tail, and bat's wings in place of arms. You are not sure what any of these mean, but none of the passages appear safe.

You lean against a wall, letting yourself relax for a moment. You feel on edge. You think you have since setting foot in this place. You eventually hear the slow plodding of footsteps as Wayne drags himself your way. He is keeping a hand on the wall as walks, the other firmly grasping at his aching skull. "Urgh... that was a nightmare. Couldn't even think over the sounds of my own body. Or you yelling at the walls." He looks up. "Oh, what's this now?"

His throat grumbles out a weird hum as he examines the three symbols. "So I guess we have to pick a direction, then? Which way'd you wanna go?" He's back on the ball remarkably quickly, and seems to be too annoyed after that last room to contest you on the selection of routes.

You select the left path, with the flame. The both of you step into the darkness. "We'll head this way. It seems the least threatening."

The groaning of metal comes from behind you as a door rises, blocking the way back out. You can feel Wayne tapping the back of your head. "You were saying something?"

You ignore him. There is no way to go but forward now. The two of you trudge on in total darkness. Wayne keeps tugging at his collar as you go, to the point of annoyance. Before you can ask him about it, he asks you something. "Hey. Is it hot in here?"

"It's been hot for a while."

"No, I mean... hotter."

Light comes into the tunnel. Too much light. From all around you, roaring flames spit from the walls, the floor, and the ceiling. You jerk back, howling in pain. Your hand has been scorched, clear liquid seeping from blackened cracks in your scream. Your eyes fixate on the wound, and your face is drawn taut in a howl as the nerves are flash-fried.

"My Circuit Breaker doesn't work that way! I'm immune to magic, but I can't alter it in any way that isn't directly affecting me." He extends his hand once more, and asks for you to take it. "You're going to be fine. Just take my hand, and trust me."

You cringe, and shut your eyes as he hoists your arm across his shoulders, and drags you into the flame.

11/15 Wounds Taken.

Your skin is boiling. Wayne struggles to keep you in his grip as you flounder about, screeching in agony as you're cooked alive in this giant oven. You feel flesh slipping off the bone as you're dragged ever deeper into the fires, its yellow tongues lapping away at your body and swallowing it up, portion by portion.

You can't take any more. Your vision begins to fade as you are overwhelmed with heat. Your steps start to falter.

14/15 Wounds Taken.

"Comin' through!"

Wayne's leg reaches out and smashes through a wooden door. He drags you out into a hallway lit by candles. It is cool here. He sets you down against the wall and lets you sit. You begin to notice the fire is gone, as are your burns. You marvel at your hand, uncracked and unblackened.

5/15 Wounds Taken.

"You see, pal?" Wayne gloats with a cheeky grin. He presses a finger up against your forehead. "It was all up here, in your head!"

It seems the illusion was restricted to that room. You might have rolled around in imaginary flames until you died if you'd gone there alone.

"Hey, don't sweat it." He pats you on the shoulder. "Wouldn't be much of a truce if we didn't help each other out, yeah?" You don't suppose you were expecting a more complicated explanation from him. You ask how close you are, prompting him to stare up to your left. "Preeeeeetty sure we're here."

You're pulled back up and swiveled around to see what he's looking at, and find a massive set of double doors. Carved of some dark wood and carefully attended to, it could only be the entrance to some palatial hall. "I mean, call me crazy," he says, "but I think I've got a pretty good hunch here."

>1. Take the lead and head in.

Be prepared to split off from each other once we go in, one left and one right. Assuming there's room to do so.

The pair of you exchange a glance and a nod. It should go without saying that the two of you need to stick together after the roughing-up you've taken. You each take a door and push. The wood creaks in resistance, and only slowly gives way to your efforts. You let them glide the rest of the distance, slowly revealing the other side.

"Oh, so you two are the rats who've been scurrying through my home?" A deep and commanding voice calls out in what you swear is the hall of some ancient king.

Where you stand begins a glorious crimson carpet. It stretches down over a hundred feet of a glorious stone hall, its ceiling stretching high above you. On either side of the hall, great stone pillars rest, shrouding the corners from sight. The carpet ends at a series of fifteen large steps. They ascend to a large stone throne, upon which lounges a man. His skin is pale, and his coiffed hair is a dark gray. A mustache rests upon his lip, braided into a twisting shape. He is dressed impeccably, as a gentleman of the 19th century, and his stance suggests that he is not pleased to see you. His face rests upon a gloved hand, and his red eyes leer at both of the mortals who have entered his hall.

This is Klaus Hind.

"Tell me, why have you knocked down my doors, slaughtered my guards, and wasted my most carefully-placed spells?"

>1. Approach.
>2. Stand your ground.
>3. A ghoul of your creation has been killing innocents.
>4. You are an abomination, and shall die.
>5. You have something we want.
>6. We can resolve this peacefully.
>7. I have come to redeem you.

3. If he was not aware, perhaps we can get a peaceful solution. If he was, all the more reason to kill him.

You hold your Black Keys tightly in hand, leveling a blade towards Hind as you make your way closer. Wayne keeps beside you, juggling a knife between hands. The vampire sits up, appearing quite serious now that you've displayed a threatening weapon.

"You are an abomination. You do not belong in this world, monster! You shall not be suffered to live!"

"Oh." He almost sounds disappointed. "It's that old spiel again. I can guess that you're a priest of some kind. And your associate... a magus? My, how bizarre. You must really want me dead, stranger. But do you understand what you're saying?"

He stands, and you notice a sword at his side. It is roughly cross-shaped, with a black sheath and grip. He snaps it from the sheath, and the blade is stark white. Klaus curls his lip, and begins speaking with a more spiteful tone. "They tell us that we are monsters, that we are not fit to live. And who are you to judge? And what do you judge by? Some book. From some backwards desert. In the BOONIES of the Fertile Crescent. You do not care for our thirst. For the cravings. You only care that there is no such word as 'vampire' in your little tome. And so you say we must be exterminated."

He points at you and declares, "You claim to be a man of the cloth, but there is no empathy in your body or your soul! But we vampires... we know how to protect our own." He snaps his fingers. "Mikhaela, would you be a dear?"

The air cracks. From the shadows behind a pillar, a whip strikes. Its lash slaps to your side and curls around Wayne's neck. The Enforcer tries to speak, but all the air to his throat has been cut off. He can only whimper as disgusting, fleshy barbs sink their teeth into his throat, feasting upon his blood. A young-looking woman stalks out from the darkness, licking her lips as she looks your way. You turn about to face her, but a contemptuous voice calls to you. "Do not turn your back on me, you damned priest!"

The world changes. You pause, and admit this is inaccurate. This is no longer your world. Space itself has begun to warp, as some border passes by you. The walls begun to curl and spiral in unnatural ways. You look up, and see the floor. On the other side of the room, Klaus Hind stands just an inch behind you, grinning as he leans beside your ear. He reaches to his right, and pats the shoulder of Mikhaela, the vampire standing ten feet in front of you.

"What... what is happening?!" you shout. Klaus only chuckles at you.

"Oh, you poor, deluded priest. You have no idea what you're in for, do you? Whoever sent you here... has sent you to your death."

A hungry tongue wipes across your ear, and a chill runs down your spine. He whispers to you, "Welcome to my Reality Marble, Executor. Welcome to your tomb."

And that's where I've got to put the brakes on for the night. Sorry for the shorter session than normal, but I hope you've enjoyed the Quest regardless! Let me know here in the thread or on Twitter @Frolloswagendir if there's anything you particularly enjoyed, or anything that can be improved for next time!

REALITY MARBEL?

BULLSHIT. THIS ISN'T DEAD APOSTLE TIER!

THIS IS DEAD APOSTLE ANCESTOR TIER!

SHIT, WE BEEN SET UP TO DIE!!!!
>>
>>29245183
Nah, man, we're gonna go full gangster. "You an abomination and a straight busta."
>>
Welp.

We dead. We don't got the Weapons to kill the Dead Apostle of this fucking level and we stuck on a REALITY FUCKING MARBLE.

We dead men walking. God doesn't help us in Reality marbles. This is the VAMPIRE world.
>>
>>29245159
Should've just thrown the fucking keys.
>>
>>29245192
Nah, a Reality Marble that's merely based around illusions can't be considered to be on the same level that of a DAA. Now if we had been dealing with Einnashe's Forest or Blackmore's Nevermore, then we'd be dead before even realizing the danger.
>>
>>29249608
Dead Apostles don't get Reality Marbles regularly. That shit is super fucking rare as fuck.

Reality Marbles DA tier users don't fucking exist.

We dealing with someone far, far, FAR above us with this fucking reality marble bullshit.

The Illusions aren't the reality marble, it fucking magic.

We dealing with some serious shit. We can't escape and we can't kill a reality marble using dead apostle with fucking BLACK KEYS.

We need the big guns and we don't have it. Sure, he isn't one of the top ten that need conceptial weapons but Black Keys aren't enough.

Especially since the enforcer is fucking bleeding to death with this vampire witch.

That right.

We are in a 2-1 Fight with dead apostles when one of the dead apostles can use Illusions.

Now our only way out of them is fucked, We are in the FUCKING reality marble of the vampire and we just a fucking noob on his first mission without any training.

Either we fuck up something big OR The Belmont Bitch set us up to die.
