The winter has been long and you are starving. You are a wolf, a hunter, but there is nothing to hunt. A great number of humans took residence in your pack’s territory at the start of winter. They clustered atop the large hill at the center of your territory and ventured out, stealing your food until none remained. Only your pack leader and yourself have survived, and you’re both on the brink of death. The last meal you had was a week ago when your father caught a famished hare.

But good fortune has come to you. One of the human whelps fell from the hill. It screamed as it fell. The strong smell of blood led the two of you through the winter squall. Standing atop a nearby knoll, you can see the injured human. Other humans are shouting in the storm, but their location is uncertain and the winds play tricks on their scent. You lick the snow off your muzzle as you look at your new prey.

Your father starts forward, carefully balancing on the thin ice above the snow.

>Rush ahead, the human is injured and can’t escape but help is coming for it soon.
>Follow your leader, he’s older and knows better.
>Search for the humans, let your father make the kill, he won’t starve you.

Your pack leader survived because of his great strength, but the rest perished. You alone survived because...
>of your intelligence (Your vocabulary will build quickly)
>you were the runt and needed less food (You will accumulate less hunger from healing, but legends will be harder to build)

Pick Two

>>29235428
You are a normal wolf as of yet. If you were to build a nightmare around yourself, consume a fae, receive the blessing of the local spirits, or something similar you may be able to take on a pack of armed humans, but not at your current strength.

You retreat back down the knoll. Only one is needed to deal with an injured human whelp. A pack of humans with their weapons will be far too much to handle.

You raise your snout to the air, trying to pick the smell of man out from the burning cold. Instead you find the musk of horse. Clumsy and predictable creatures the humans sit upon, they’ll have to be in one of the low paths. The apes can go nearly anywhere, but their slaves are simple.

You trot along the ice, the steam of your breath lost in the storm. They carry fire and are frantic. The human in the lead is trying to fight through the snow without a horse, but it is too deep for him. He breaks through with every step and is nearly swimming through the drifts at times, but his is greatly distraught. He cries out into the night far more than the others do.

The pack of humans stop at an intersection of paths and split into two groups. One sticks close to the edge of the hill where the rocks still protrude from the snow, the other begins to spread through the woods and will be upon you soon. You will not have time to eat the injured human.

You begin to growl as you back away from them. Your barking echoes off the stone face of the hill, scattering around the woods. The horses shriek and rear, but the humans keep control of them. They begin to shout to one another and one jumps off his horse. He trudges through the snow carrying the strange branch that throws sticks.

You bark again as you see the other pack continue on, and he turns to face you. You turn and run, trying to stay out of sight, but he’s found you. You run so fast you break through the ice and fall and scramble back up. Thankfully, they don’t attack you, but you didn’t manage to slow them at all. You arrive back at the knoll just in time to see the humans come upon your pack leader. The human in front falls to his knees and tears off his metal cap to scream into the night.

In great anguish he barks to his men and points at your father. Before you can intervene, or he can escape, they fling their pointy sticks at him. One catches him in his rear leg and he cries out, trying to continue limping forward.

You snarl and dash down the slope. The three men are completely focused on attacking your father and don’t even hear your approach before you are on them. You leap into the air and bite into the man who hand wounded your pack leader. He had been atop a horse, but you rip him free, shredding through the wools on his chest. He shouts out and tries to push you away, but you duck and weave around his hands, tearing more and more at his protection.

When he pulls a stone out and tries to smash it into you, you snap up and grab his wrist. You snap half the bones with a single bite and he screams in pain as blood fills your mouth. He drops the stone, but you are forced to jump off of him as the man who wields fire rears his horse around to swipe at you with the fire. He doesn’t come close to you, but startles the free horse and it rears back, flailing it’s hooves around before running off.

It stumbles through the deep snow and its leg twists. It neighs violently as it falls to the side and starts thrashing, trying to regain its feet.

Another of the pointy sticks lands near your feet and you jump back. The man who had followed you from the other group is atop the knoll. But your father has escaped.

You growl and bark as you back away from them. The horse will have to be put down, there is no way for them to save it. If you time it right, you should be able to scavenge a meal. But not now.

You turn and run as you see the human on the knoll pull back on the large branch again. One of the pointy sticks slams into a nearby oak as you run into the woods, chasing after the trail of blood your father is leaving. The blood is coming down his leg quite severely and you can see and smell drips of it with every step, marring the white snow. A first year whelp would be able to follow him like this, and humans have become good at tracking.

The trail goes surprisingly far, winding through the woods, avoiding heavy brush and staying in the gentle slopes. The humans are following behind you, but are making slow progress. You finally find him crossing the iced over river. In spring, this river is fast and strong, lethal to try to swim through as it tumbles down the rocks. Even in summer it is dangerous, but manageable. Gravel slopes down to it beneath the snow on either side, where trees cannot grow.

Your pack leader is still limping, and the humans will catch up to him if you do nothing.

There’s nothing you can do to help him directly, but you won’t let the last of your family perish. You test the air, the storm is dying down some and you can tell that the branch carrying human is close behind you. Further beyond him the two others that had been with him are riding their horses. Neither of you were breaking through the ice, so only the faintest of claw marks can be found, much to shallow to be found at night, especially without a fire. He’ll have to follow the blood.

The strong winds of the storm had caught the low branches of a gnarled tree, packing snow on them till they dipped down to the ground. You hide yourself behind this, just above where you are certain he will be, and crawl into the shadows. Your nose twitches.

You can smell a squirrel, perhaps multiple. Your mouth begins salivating. Then you hear the human stomping through the ice, his extra skins wrapped tight around his body. He stops at the edge of the trees and breathes out before taking the branch into his hands again.

Your pack leader is almost to the other side.

The human kneels down just beyond the trees and pulls a stick back on the branch, tugging on the string. Your father will soon be across, but is still in danger. You leap from hiding, baring your fangs. In his surprise, he releases the stick and it flings off randomly, but he manages to throw his hands in the way. You bite down on the thick furs he has wrapped around his soft flesh, and try to tear.

When you break away to try to get to his exposed neck, he shoves the branch in your way, catching you in the mouth. You clamp down and crack it, but he muscles you back and throws you to the side. The other humans are close. You’ll have to finish this quickly, but he’s drawn one of his stones and is growling something as he tosses the branch aside.

The human gets back to his feet, holding the stone in either hand, hunched over and ready to strike. You growl and he growls something back about his bow. You start backing away as you hear the horses of the other two humans approaching. When he glances back to look for his pack, you bolt. He dives forward to attack you, but you’re too fast. You’re bounding across the ice by the time he finishes tumbling ass over head down the slope.

You run along the trail of blood, your father having already hidden himself among the trees, and stop on the far shore to chance a look back. The other two humans have gotten off their horses and are standing on the opposite shore, both of them with bows pointed at you.

You run up the bank, fighting against collapses of the powdery snow. You manage to find purchase beneath the drifts of fresh snow and scramble up before the sticks strike you. Instead, they plant harmlessly in the snow near your feet.

The wind shifts as you duck behind the brush. Now it blows down the river, from the mountain heads. You can smell humans, far too many clustered together to count. Many more than are staying on the great hill. But there is another scent. An earthy and dusty scent, something you’ve never smelled before.

You don’t think you should go upriver.

The humans chasing you have stopped at the edge of the ice, pacing back and forth. They’re scared it will not be able to take their weight.

You find your pack leader curled up beneath a pine tree, burrowed in the dry needles. He’s already chewed out the stick, but he’s still bleeding, if slowly. Seems he has no strength to continue for the night and must rest. But he at least ate some of the human, and you have had nothing.

Your hungering stomach drives you back out. You don’t think you’ll have to worry about him, although this side of the river isn’t your territory. The smell of horse, and the memory of the taste of its flesh drives you back across the river, far down river from where the humans are. The storm is almost over, so you can easily track the smell of blood back to the edge of the hill.

You haven’t seen any of the humans, but you can smell them. Some are wandering the woods in search of you, but one is nearby. There is no sign of the child’s corpse, or the human leader. The horse has been abandoned, it’s throat slit to bleed into the snow. Snow has started to accumulate on it and a few crows are pecking at its hide. You lick your jowls, saliva dripping down to the snow.

You stalk forward, making as little noise as you can. The depression against the cliff is a mess of scents, all masking the fainter ones. When your pack leader ripped into the human child, he splattered blood and scent across the entire area, the human you injured also bled heavily, but the horse is the strongest of all. On top of that, all of the humans gathered here only a moment ago, shedding their scent on the fresh snow.

The fresh human scent seems to be coming down from the hill, where hundreds of their pack members are sleeping. Their filth and fires have been clouding your entire territory.

You feel uneasy about this, but nothing has ever been gained for free.

Although wolves are monogamous and typically mate for life, this is not always the case. It used to be believed that in the event that one of the couple dies, the other wolf will not seek out another mate, but this is not true. Wolves have been known to have many mates in their lifetime, even simultaneously. Wolves will sometimes even leave their mates in search of a new one. There have even been cases where in a single wolf pack, there are two breeding females to one male.
>>
Something nudges you. It’s warm. Snow starts getting thrown away from you but you don’t have the strength to open your eyes. You’re just so cold. A gentle tongue starts digging through your fur, pressing against your wounds. The pressure hurts, but you know it’ll help. Then something presses against you, a warm body to ward off the snow.

A great bellowing blare rolls through the trees. Then again, and again. An unnatural and infernal roar that no animal would ever make. It’s a human’s horn. The body next to you stirs and rises, shaking the snow off. They start licking your face until you open your eyes. You didn’t have enough rest, but you know you’ll only get weaker. The great strength that was once in your body has been replaced by an infection of seeping ice.

The sun has just risen above the mountains, bringing blinding light down to the snow covered valley. The wolf before you isn’t a member of your pack. She must be from the neighboring territory, the one you’re intruding on. Why she isn’t with her pack you don’t know.

You can hear more human horns, and men shouting the clashing of stones echo through the trees. The sound of men killing one another and saturating the land with their blood. But there is also the trumpeting of some strange beast.

You’re so hungry you can’t stand. But the other wolf doesn’t let you rest. She digs her muzzle under your neck and starts pushing you up until she gets your head off the ground. Then she works down your chest, until she’s forced you back to your feet.

You almost collapse back to the ground, but then you hear your father howl into the morning mist. He’s looking for you. The female wolf snarls at the direction of your father and starts trotting in a different direction, but stops to look for you to follow.

possible, but its also a biological mechanism. You turn your head upriver, in the direction of your father’s howl. You push yourself and start working through the snow. The storm has ended, leaving a thick dusting of snow over the ice that had formed from a thaw refreeze cycle, making the footing difficult. When you start heading for your father, the female trots in front of you, trying to block your way, but you stagger past her.

As you continue on to where you left your father, she walks up beside you. She whines in concern and licks the side of your face, but you continue on, one paw at a time. Your breathing is difficult and shallow, the bleeding filling your lungs. You manage somehow.

At last you reach the place where you left him. He’s gone. You check the scent and find that he left back along your own trail. Looking out over the river, you see him crossing over in search of you. He can’t move his hind leg. You huff, trying to inhale, but your injuries are too much. You can only manage a weak moan instead of the mighty howl it would take to get his attention. You try again and again, but don’t have the strength.

A high, piercing howl rides down the icy river bed, over the clash of human battle. Your father stops and snaps his head around. He lifts his nose up to the air as he looks at the two of you, then he starts running back to you as fast as he can. You step forward happily, but turn to see the female wolf trotting away. She gives you one last look and runs off.

You happily reunite with your father, but both of you are severely injured and starving.

Perhaps, but I'm assuming we're something of an adult wolf. Its around then that fathers begin getting hostile with them. Wolves after being ostracised from their pack usually wander for a while and are brought into another pack after befriending a female of the pack, and eventually after hanging around for a while the pack leader will either chase them away or accept them into the pack.

>>29241488

This seems like the best idea, since the humans all seem busy killing each other. Maybe we can get some horse without being shot at and then rest and heal up.
>>
>>29241584
Well, when you think about it it makes sense.

Father has breeding wolf, who he has kids with. Females stay with his group and are sometimes sexed up by males wandering around, or by an up and coming new alpha in the pack. Thats one of the ways genes are spread out a bit. However, if you keep the males in the pack, those new alphas sexing up females are sons sexing up relatives.

If wolves didn't kick out the males, then each pack would basically be a Joseph Fritzl family. Plus, the spreading of ones children spreads ones genes. I can't remember the location, but there's a state park in USA thats bringing wolves back, and they noticed a fairly influential/strong pack leader who was black. Next generation had quite a few black pack leader, females and pups as his kids had spread out pretty well and a fair few had managed to breed, a couple becoming alphas of their own.

You stare after the female wolf for a moment, watching where she runs to so that you might find her later. Then you bring your attention back to your father, the last remnant of your pack. The two of you both turn and head upriver, to the heart of the battle.

As you approach, the screaming and wailing of men grows louder and louder, until you hear a torrential shattering of ice and rushing of water. You pull yourself over a snow drift to look down on the river. A great flood of water, ice, and logs is rushing down the river bed. Where this great surge of water came from, you do not know. Only that the water beneath the ice had been very low for many days

Then you see the bodies. Hundreds of humans and dozens of horses are being swept away by the water. Tumbling and crashing between the ice and logs, their blood fouling the water to no end. Over the raging water you hear them shouting one word over and over, and then you know what it means.

Monster.

Great big lumbering beasts covered in scales and with massive tusks. Nearly two dozen of them stand among the humans, and are marching towards the other, bellowing their strange roars from strange, arm like appendages.

Sticks are flying between the two groups of humans, great big ones focused on the monsters, but to no avail. Men and horse alike begin fleeing from the scene in a frenzy. Closest to you, a horse carries a dead human along its back, and will soon run past you.

As the horse tries to run past you to escape the swell of water, you reveal yourself from behind a tree, snarling at it. The horse rears and slows just enough for your father to push himself up and grab the human’s leg. The corpse slides off the back of the horse reluctantly, but the beast is happy to shed its burden.

Blood still seeps from the human, and he was doused in the freezing water, but his insides will surely still be warm. The two of you grab either ends of his furs and work together to pull them apart. You both attack his chest, gnawing at the ribs until you move on to his larger muscles. In your hunger, the two of you strip the corpse down to the bones and crack those for the marrow.

Hunger : 2/5

You will have to rest a moment before you can eat more.

Beneath you, in the depression of the riverbed where the humans are fighting, the water has slowed. The river now appears as it should, but there are corpses everywhere. A few of the monsters have been slain, stabbed countlessly by the sticks and stones of men, but still the battle goes on.

Horns blare and men shout as they try to communicate with one another over the roar of hell.

You lick your lips and lay down, biding your time.

You know that your territory is in the mountains and borders a strong river. If you follow the river up the mountains, the water is cleaner and colder, and less strong. If you follow the river all the way down to the foothills, the wolf packs become much larger and prey is suitably plentiful. You imagine there is a way across the mountains, but you have no inkling where that would be. Such a pass is likely where the humans came from, as they do not typically come through here.

Health : 1/5
Hunger : 3/5

The battle progresses and more men from your territory seem to be dying than the unknown humans. Most of their force was killed by the strike of water, but the battle has yet to stop. It almost seems that there are more corpses to stand on than ground.

Then you hear the pounding of feet through the snow. You jump to your feet alongside your father as ten humans rush through the woods towards you, all carrying bows. They were rushing to stand at the top of the hill the two of you were resting on. But when they saw the corpse, and the blood covering the two of you, they all stopped.

The sound seems different, but the intonation is the same. Monster. Monster.

The two of you turn and run. The feeding and rest did both of you good. Your injuries are still there, but you aren’t on the brink of death. The fear you instilled in the humans with strange scent gives you enough time to escape well down the river. When you look back, the pack of humans are focused on the battle, and not on you.

The two of you trot down, dodging around debris and checking the bodies. Most of them are cold and still, but a few humans still live. Their limbs broken and twisted, blood fouling the water. Your father attacks a horse that had had its head crushed by a block of ice. You know the taste of horse flesh well, it pales to the taste of man flesh.

You sense that your strange source of power has been joined by another, and both of them pull you towards the human corpses. Whatever these powers are, you fear them, but you also fear losing them.

A problem i forsee with nightmare mode is that people's beliefs shape us, well, they usually don't believe in invincible monsters, instead they believe in a powerful monster who has evil-ball flaws which gets it hoisted by its own petard. Also they believe we will fall to a hero, so eventually some hero will come after us and then our human given powers will fail.

It is better to have a legend about being the best at escaping and somehow living even when thought dead

Your father busies himself with the corpse of a mere horse. A creature no more than a beast worked to the brink of death and starved for its efforts. You bring your attention to the humans around you, the ones who tried to kill you, now at your mercy.

You find one scrabbling at the icy bank. You can see the splinters from where a log smashed into his skull and shattered his arm, but his time is up. You stand over him and bare your fangs. He’s babbling about monsters and staring at the ground, while not looking at the one over him. You bare your fangs and growl, saliva dripping down. When he looks up, fear slowly wraps its arms around him, smothering him as you rip out his throat.

As his arterial blood sprays into the air, you bite away at his neck till you tear the meat form his chest and rip off his ribs to pull out his heart and devour it. Another human is screaming monster at you, but he daren’t approach. You watch as he pulls himself free of the water and begins to run. You lick the blood from your lips.

Your stomach full and your hunger sated, you stalk back from the mutilated corpses you left in your wake. You climb up the slope and find the shelter from last night. Your father is soon behind you, and for the first time you notice that you seem to be looking down on him, perhaps because of his limp.

The wind is still brutally cold, so you burrow in amongst the pine needles and curl up to rest. Your father joins you, resting his weary head on your back, and the two of you drift back to sleep. The sounds of death and battle still carry over to you, and you can hear men running desperately for their lives as the monsters bellow their unnatural horns. It lasts all day, till the sun is setting against the opposite mountains, but finally you hear silence, and merry making rather than battle.

At some point your father left to scout around, but now he has returned with no great sense of danger. You push yourself to your feet and gag. You cough and hack, blasting blood from your lungs, then you breathe in stronger than before.

Health : 5
Hunger : 4/5

The two of you trot back to the battlefield. The strange smelling humans are dragging corpses away, piling some here and some there. Four of the monsters were killed in total, their bodies already covered in crows till they shine like a beetles carapace.

The humans are flying fabrics in the air, standing proud and unafraid as the sun sets. The humans that had been in your territory are almost entirely slain. The strangers to your land are gathering on the far side of the river, to take residence on the great hill it seems.

You see a pack of the strangers pull a few of the humans to the middle of the battlefield. One of them is pulled to the front and forced to his knees. It appears to be the same man who had led the humans against you and your father. They press a stone to his neck and begin to converse.

Stalk towards the group of prisoners If you'll forgive my meta for ease of communication..

How many of the strangers are around the prisoners? I'm looking to boost our legend hella big by saving the prisoners to spread our tale further.
>>
>>29244258
Start fucking once of the corpses. CoC quest begin.

Call of Cthulhu? It's about what it sounds like (if you're familiar with Lovecraft).

Voting for nom a corpse then head towards the group of prisoners.

Something to read, while we waited.
For context here is the pick.
>>
You sit in the shadow of a snow covered tree and watch as the humans work. Once they’ve finally pilled the corpses of the familiar humans up to the height of one of the monsters, they begin a new one, next to it. Then a human walks up to it with a strange, orange rock and tosses it atop. It shatters, spilling a liquid across the bodies, and is soon followed by a torch.

The strange smelling humans laugh as the others wail in anguish. The burning of the flesh fouls the air and scatters the crows. You can see that a steady stream of humans have been carrying various objects across a shallow bend of the river, taking them to the great hill. The leader of the captives is forced around to look at his pack. He doesn’t cry out as the stones are used to slice the necks of the captives, and for that he is kicked to the ground next to them.

The human in charge shouts to his pack members and points at one of the monsters. He laughs and points at the men on the ground.

In the immediate area only a few dozen, most without bows. But there is a constant stream of them moving across the river and you simply couldn't count the amount of humans you saw fighting. The corpses are beyond imagination.

And this might not be all of them.
>>
We might be able to acquire the 'Executioner' spark by executing our captain captive.
>>
>>29244786
Keep watching for now, see if the captive notices us
>>

What captain captive?

>>29244966

I think the captives were just immolated.
>>
>>29244906
Combat not an option then, what's stopping the first group from running? Are they restrained? If not we could start howling and see if they take the opportunity to use the distraction and fight back.

I think we should start howling.

Let me give an out of character explanation

So, the invaders just baited and slaughtered the stationed forces by unleashing an upriver dam. Their initial plan was just to buy time for their superior archers to whittle down the defenders while the infantry set up. Instead, the commander of the, let's call them Romans, was particularly distraught and ordered an immediate assault, which got his forces destroyed. The shall we say Carthaginians, routed them, drove them back but captured the leaders and the territory.

They are currently burning the corpses of the enemy as sacrilege to the Roman gods, slit the throats of the roman's command, except the commander himself. Who's son your father ate.

Now they are bringing over a monster to eat him for further sacrilege
>>
Hrmm could be possibly startle the monster to cause a panic?
>>
>>29245096

Aaaaaah, okay. Thank you that makes things much clearer.

Okay guys, how do we free the commander? Should we try to panic the elephant? (this is meta but...traditionally elephants were gotten drunk before battles so that they'd frenzy and fight properly, aside from when they're drunk though they're rather easy to startle and panic.)
>>
>Start on path of blood
>get scared
>try to back pedal
>going to fuck everything up

why you do dis

Just go down there and eat the guy. the invaders will find it awesome
>>
>>29245149
And then there's more things learned
>>
>>29245096
crush those dirty fucking barbarians under the paws of rome
>>
>>29245173

The issue with that is that we don't know if any of the 'not-Romans' we let escape after viewing our escapades made it out.

We know this Commander saw us be badass.

So we want to make sure he gets to tell other people.

Alternatively, yeah us tearing the commander's throat out will likely yield us goodie/badass points with the invaders. I'm down for either one really.

Actually, charging up on a monster and tearing a man's throat out in the middle of a battleground being cleaned up will likely solidify our legend further.
Yeah, I'm down.
>>
>>29245138
this thing is going to turn around and punt us 12km into the air

lets do it
>>
I'm going to ask for a revote since I added quite a bit of information. I am ill practiced at parsing complex military tactics into the eyes of a wolf, although it's arguable I did a perfect job of it, but that's bad for a quest

so, please link here with your final choice
>>
Okay, voting for tearing the Commander's throat out then growling/howling at the monster before running away.
>>
>>29245307
>>29245294

>>
>>29245330

Everyone except the commander is dead, and he'd be shot down/horsed down if we freed him.

OP is obviously throwing us a bone to ignite the legend.
>>
>>29245330
Better to be feared than loved.
>>
>>29245294

Scare the monster, cause a panic and see what we can do from there
>>
>>29245294
Cause a panic, no need to be edgy.
>>
>>29245294
I'm for rushing out and ripping out the captured commanders throat and then running away
>>
>>29245330
don't think in these white hat black hat terms

be the savage beast and let the humans draw their own conclusions

>>29245294
there's no way we'd survive if it came to combat, they'd probably kill us if we came close so panicing the elephant is probably our only choice when it comes to elevating the legend

stop voting to enter combat for fuck sake there's dozens of them

Rip captive's throat out, then panic the monster.

we're not going to rip anyones throat out, in case you've missed it there's an army present.
>>
>>29245444

Your father slips back to hide in the shadows, waiting for the battlefield to clear. You however, put yourself atop the largest hill overlooking the battlefield, the same place you devoured the corpse. You watch as they pull the monster over, leading it by sinews attached to its head.

Then the human recognizes you. He pushes himself to his feet and roars, pointing at you, tears streaming down his face. You can see a ripple of fear spread through the stream of humans as they stop to look at you. The laughing human now scowls at you, but barks at the monster just the same. When the monster is close, its master begins to instruct it and the beast trumpets its snout and rears back on its legs, looming over the anguished man.

You howl, loud and powerful. Your chest burns fiercely from the bellowing sound, but you maintain it as best you can before petering out. The monster trumpets again, screaming this time, and pulls away from its master. The humans begin to shout as the beast lurches away.

And as they’re distracted, the anguished father grabs up a branch, a branch with a sharp stone at the end. He hefts it up over his shoulder and launches it.

Please roll Flight against the best of these.

The branch soars through the air as fast as a golden hawk. You spin around to avoid it, but it lands true nonetheless. The tip of it rips through your shoulder, slicing through the muscle and crashing in front of you. You yelp in pain, but manage to stay up. The human’s last words are to call you a monster, before he’s trampled underfoot by the one behind him.

Health : 1

In the shocked silence that gripped the valley, the humans could only stare at you as you endured your injuries and howled to the setting sun before trotting off to the darkness of the woods.

That night, hundreds of humans would huddle around their fires atop the great hill and speak of Whitefang the Terrible who gathered strength by feasting on the corpses of men and children. And if they listened carefully, they could hear the sounds of bones being broken by a great hungering maw. For in the darkness was a beast twice the size of a normal wolf, marked by a scar across his right shoulder where the greatest of spears could not fell him.

A legend was born.
