Late start due to jingles video, haha!

anyway, sorry about yesterday. long story short, holiday hours are nonsense, and have royally fucked my sleep pattern. such as it is. hahahaha.

About '45- I do have one more thread kinda written and set up to go, but... I kinda don't want to run it. it's not so much I think it gives too much away, it's just... yeah. IDK, I'll pocket that one for a rainy day, i think, or maybe hand it off to a friend of mine to run, see how she does.

Sorry again about the late start, gents.

++

Paperwork. Always, always paperwork.

You'd finally gotten caught up with after action reports from Berlin when a stack of 'personal' correspondence from about two dozen matrons landed on your desk. Each boiled down to the same thing- they wanted Frank and Merlin. While you'd like to just type up a form letter and run off a bunch of copies, that would be rude- and right now, you don't feel like making enemies. You honestly don't feel like you can afford to, especially not after dealing with that bitch Longstreet. Word's already gotten back to you that she intends to make your life miserable, and while you're heavily insulated from her, you don't doubt her ability to do so. Briefly, you're almost thankful that most of your family is already gone- she can't threaten anyone but you, and honestly, that's not really much of a threat.

You can't help but notice, however, that the request from the Annapolis naval academy was written by the assistant head matron- not matron Longstreet herself. That brought a bit of a smirk to your face- though you wonder why she bothered, knowing that she'd likely be rejected outright. Of course, to be fair, she probably knew you wouldn't even open a letter from Longstreet herself, so having the assistant write it made perfect sense.

1/4 (probably)
>>
Of course, all of this is just preliminary. Most of these matrons will be at Castle Barin, your new posting, in person- that much, not even Captain Blackwell could prevent, their combined political clout taken alongside the lull in the fighting being more than enough for Atlantic command- and the secdef himself to get involved. Blackwell agreed to detach the whole squadron in exchange for another- VF-8, transferred in from the Pacific. You smiled at the news- Admiral Nixon must have been hopping mad at losing another Pacific witch squadron to the Atlantic fleet.

You pause in writing yet another carefully phrased rejection to rub your face with your hands, scratching your head with both hands and sighing. Of course, that's about the same time Rachel walks into your office unannounced- a bad habit of hers- smirking when you peer at her with one eye through parted fingers.

She sits in the chair across from you, casually putting her boots up on your desk, narrowly missing the stack of paperwork. She grins when you scowl at her, batting at her boot with one hand while moving the stack of papers closer to you with the other.

“Tabby when are you gonna take a break?” She asks, indicating the paperwork. “You've been at this all damn day, and I don't need to go over to the mercy and find you asleep in Merlin’s bed again.”

She glances over at you. “Which was disappointing. Shoulda been Frank's bed, girl. It might have even done one of you good.” She grins. “Maybe both of you, if you know what I-”

“Rachel!” You yell in mock outrage, throwing a ball of paper at her. Your friend, for her part, laughs- if it had been anyone else, you'd be mad as hell, but with her, you expect this kind of thing. She's always said you needed to get out more. “Am I the only one with any semblance of decency around here?”

2/4
>>
She laughs again. “Ya know, coming from someone who wants to be treated like a piece of me-”

“Rachel!” You exclaim again, wishing you had something more menacing to throw. Like a brick. You can't exactly get in trouble over a kink, you know, but it's not like you want it out in the open, either. “Merlin's bed was empty and she woke me up anyway.”

She shrugs. “Just saying, I don't think he would have complained.”

It's your turn to shrug. “And you've been spending the most time over there with him. I'm sure you've nodded off a few times yourself. I'm sure he wouldn't have complained if he woke up with you-”

She shrugs. “I'm a blanket hog. And I'm worried I'd get tangled up in his IV lines, anyway. Being tied up is your thing, remember?”

“Hmph.” You snort. “So did you come by just to make lewd jokes, or did you have something to do?”

She points at you. “You, ma'am, have the next shift with him, but there's a couple of new matrons at the castle 'requesting' to talk with you. I only found out about that one secondhand, I'm surprised you didn't already know.”

“I did.” You respond, drily.

“Oh, good.” She says, then continues. “Katya and Rosalie want to know if we should have Frank and Merlin's jet lifted over, if we do then we need to get going on that. There's some marine heavy lift choppers that can do it, but they'll have to run it up on deck and get it set for a sling load. The rest of our equipment is ready to go, though. You can oversee that or leave it to those two, they seem to have a pretty good handle on it.”

She pulls out a battered weatherproof notebook and flips through a few pages. “Lesse... Merlin's with Patty and Nicole for most of the day, but you might want to pay her a visit anyway.”

“She's ok?” You ask.

3/4
>>
Rachel shrugs. “She's... mopey. And doesn't like being away from Frank at all. I damn near had to order her out, but she can't spend however long in there. Kid needed some fresh air.”

You nod. “That's expected. I was worried she'd be borderline catatonic.”

She nods. “Yeah, well. She's convinced He's going to be fine, and will wake up any day now. But she's blaming herself for what happened... whatever it was.”

You shake your head. “She needs leave and some serious psychological help.”

Slider laughs bitterly. “Most of us probably do. No section for us though. Besides, you know Frank would fight you on it.” She flips through the notebook some more, then closes it and tucks it into a pocket. “That's pretty much it. If you want to go take care of something else, I'll go pull a double with Frank, it's not like it's hard work and I've been getting caught up on my reading.”

You consider the options a bit before responding. Rosalie and Katya could probably use some help, but they're both pretty capable, it's not like you really need to babysit them. Flying to Barin with Frank's jet would give you a convenient excuse to at least check the castle out before you're transferred there, as would flying out to talk to the matrons. Of course, you haven't been able to talk with Samantha much since Berlin, either, and you feel like that's something you should do. Finally, of course, you could fly out to the Mercy and get some more paperwork taken care of in Frank's room.

[] Help Katya and Rosalie, they'll appreciate it
[] Oversee the airlift of Frank's jet to Barin, it'll give you a chance to tour the castle on non-matron business
[] Go find Patty and Samantha, see what they're up to.

[x] Go find Patty and Samantha, see what they're up to.

You consider overseeing the airlift- Marine heavy lift Helicopters, a trio of CH-53Es, specifically, have been assigned to help you move your squadron off the Saratoga and over to Castle Barin. You still haven't had a chance to get over to the castle yourself, so most of the work's been handled by Katya and Rosalie, who've developed an excellent working relationship, and your few assigned ground crew, most of whom will be staying aboard ship to work with the incoming unit.

But other things take priority- for example, Samantha. You've been worried about her ever since she recovered- less than a day after Berlin, almost two weeks ago, now. Initially, she reacted about as poorly to news of Frank's condition as you were afraid she would, and has only just started to regain some semblance of normalcy. Well, normalcy for her, anyway. She's been blaming herself, insisting that she's the reason both of them were hurt, and frank would have been fine if she wasn't there. Frustratingly, however, she won't say why she thinks that, but she's been spending most of her waking hours either with Frank, or with their aircraft. You know she's sent a huge amount of personal correspondence to her parents, too, but you figure that's healthy, and have left it alone.

“Where's Samantha and Patty?” You ask, putting the letters in a bag and closing it- you already cleaned out your desk, so you have to carry your work back and forth.

Rachel shrugs. “Down on the hangar deck, I think. The crews been busy getting everything ready for lift. Sammy wanted to make sure she'd had a chance to work with the jet some more before they did, though. She's half the holdup, actually, they wanted to lift it over first thing after the twins landed.”

The twins, along with Joe, are already at the castle, handling the arrangements for your two conventional jets. Well, semi-conventional, you suppose.

You nod. “Fair enough. Go ahead and get back over to the Mercy, I've got other things to take care of. As much as I'd like to take a break with Frank-”

“A Frank break? Now who's being lewd?” Your friend interjects. You almost- almost- crack a smile.

“Shush. As much as I'd like to, I've got other things to take care of.” You finish. “Call us when he gets up, will you?”

She nods. “You'll be the second one to know. You get your shit packed yet?”

You nod. “Most of it. I'll be fine.”

She scoffs. “Sure you will. I'll go through our quarters later, just to make sure.” She says, getting up. “Place would burn down without me.”

You laugh, stepping outside your office and closing the hatch behind you.

She heads up to the flight deck, where she'll catch a ride with one of the marine choppers heading back towards castle barin- while they can't land on the pad of the Mercy, she can then hitch a ride with a smaller boat from the castle out to the big ship, anchored nearby.

You, meanwhile, head down to the hangar deck. With most of the ship's compliment of aircraft stowed, it's fairly packed- you have to duck and weave around parked tomcats and hornets to reach the spot where Frank's Wyvern sits. It's hooked up to an APU, and both hatches are open. Patty and Nicole stand down near the nose wheel, looking up. Towards the cockpit- where you suspect Samantha is sitting.

The ground crew doesn't seem to be involved, and most of them are instead moving your striker racks over to the elevators, where they'll be staged on deck. You and the rest of the witches will be flying over with your strikers, according to the plan, while Merlin will hitch a ride with a Sea Knight- though, you're considering riding with her, if Frank hasn't improved by then.

[x] How's she doing, Patty?

You join Patty and Nicole, standing beside them, looking up at the jet- as if you could see through it's dark gray skin inside to the witch in the back seat.

“How's she doing, Patty?” You ask, noting that patty jumps a bit at the sound of your voice.

She tries to play it off. “She's fine, I reckon.” She says, after a minute. “She misses Frank.”

You nod. “We all do.”

Patty quirks an eyebrow at that, but doesn't say anything immediately. “She worships the guy, you know that?” She says, after a minute. “It ain't right. I mean, I like him too, sure, we grew up together, practically, but...”

You nod. It is a problem- and one you should have caught long before they were assigned together. Samantha's personnel record noted the confidence issues, and her psych evaluation post academy only reenforced them. The kid had- maybe has- no self confidence, and had, back then, anyway, felt overshadowed by her older sister. Her inability to operate strikers was, you think, the final nail in the coffin, so far as that went, and she'd probably resigned herself to being nothing, nobody. Certainly not one of the witches she would read about in the comics.

Then, almost overnight, Frank made her feel like a part of the team, an important, integral part. He's repeatedly credited his success, hell, his survival down to his RIO, and she's returned the favor, playing the part of adoring little sister through and through. Or so it seems to you- she really does idolize the guy, you know that much.

“But there's nothing I can do. Not without making her situation far worse. Right now, she needs Frank.” You say, flatly. You catch Patty nodding out of the corner of your eye. “Besides, as far as idols go, there are worse ones.”

1/2
>>
Patty grins. “I don't know about all that. Frank was pretty crazy when we were kids.”

You snort. “Frank was pretty crazy a year and a half ago.” You point out. “Right up till, what? We went to Miramar that first time?”

She shrugs. “Near enough. Listen, Ice, you know Frank. He's not going to hold her accountable, but...”

She trails off.

“You think she is?” You ask. You've reviewed the footage a dozen times- it's inhuman. You're not even sure a witch could have pulled that off- the twins broke off their attack run just before Frank and Samantha barreled into the dreadnaught's escorts.

Patty shakes her head. “I'm not even sure what they did was human. But-” She pauses again, then shakes her head. “Frank's always been like that, kind of. He tries harder, the longer the odds get. But this-”

“This goes beyond that.” You supply.

She nods. “I've never seen anything like this. I've never even heard of anything like this. Maybe some passing references to this kind of thing around General Forrest, maybe, but even that...” She shrugs.

You're interrupted by Samantha's voice, calling down from the jet. “O-Ok, Patty, I'm ready. Everything's set up, j-just hop up front real fast so I can run the calibrations.”

“What's she up to?” You ask- noting that Patty isn't moving.

“She said she needed to calibrate some systems in the jet for some modifications she'd worked out.” She says. “I'm not real anxious to get back up in that jet, but I promised.”

[x] I'll do it.

You nod, figuring that getting zapped like she did would make anyone kind of hesitant to get back in the machine.

“I'll do it.” You say to her, starting up the ladder alongside the intakes.

“Thanks.” She responds. “It's not that I'm scared, just-”

“It's fine.” You say, looking down at her as you follow the marked pathway across the fighter's back and up onto the cockpit.

You have to look down as you step carefully around sensor lenses, pausing near Merlin's hatch long enough to catch her attention.

“O-oh. Hi Ice.” She says. “I-I thought Patty was down there?”

You nod. “She is, hon. I told her I'd help though. What do I need to do?”

“Oh. J-just go up front and put on the headset up there. I-it should be plugged in already. I-I'll tell you what I need you to do, o-ok?” She says. “I-I'm just trying to calibrate some of the sensors is all, I just need you to tell me w-what you see, ok?”

You nod, heading up to the front section of the cockpit and sitting down. You realize you don't know how to retract the seat and fumble around for a second before you find the toggle along the right, below and behind your line of sight.

Inside, the fighter feels claustrophobic- you can't imagine trying to fight like this, your senses cut down to just what the computers can show you. Almost belatedly, you find the headset and put it on, adjusting it so it's less uncomfortable.

“T-the intercom toggle is on the throttle, I-Ice.” Samantha says, after a second. “O-on your left, I think it's under your index finger.”

You find the button without much trouble, wishing for the simple sets that are designed for striker use- voice activated and crystal clear, not the grainy, popping transmission of the jet's intercom.

“O-ok.” Samantha says, after a minute. “I-I'm going to turn on the main sensors, I j-just need you to tell me if Patty and Nicole look normal. T-they should be out on the left.”

The screens flicker to life, a torrent of information suddenly presented by the combined sensor array. You find yourself wondering again how anyone could fly like this, let alone fight- you're used to the information your senses give you, your sight and hearing being the most important. Sure, you have the wrist display and the HUD headset, but this... this is something else.

Looking out to your left, you see Patty and Nicole- both of whom are still looking up at the jet expectantly. They don't seem out of the ordinary at all, though- at least, there's nothing you can see.

“Ok, I see them.” You say, after a second of looking for the intercom toggle. “They look normal.”

“O-ok.” She responds. “H-hang on.”

You can faintly hear her climbing up to stand on her seat, calling down to the two witches, who, after a confused glance back and forth, both summon their familiars. The screen suddenly outlines the both of them, a small data block appearing next to them. They walk away from the jet, both moving so that a parked tomcat is in between you and them- yet, an outline of them both appears on your screen.

[x] This is amazing, hon. What did you do?

“This is amazing, hon.” You gasp, the possibilities suddenly overwhelming you. She's clearly developed a way to detect magic but- how? “What did you do?”

You can hear the hesitation in her voice when she answers. “W-well, you remember over Japan? W-when we met that one Soviet witch? I-I'd figured out how to track her using magic, b-but I had to be looking for her.”

You remember the fight- your first run-in with Konstantina. At the time, no one had thought much about her, though Frank and Merlin's ability to fight her to a standstill had unnerved you and Rachel privately.

“W-well, when we were in California a-and you and R-roasalie were teaching me about magic, I though about how it was kinda like electricity.”

1/2
>>
You frown- not really, magic's a whole different thing entirely, practically, but you keep quiet.

“A-and we've got the sensors that can detect electricity, b-but we never u-use them. I-I usually just turn them off a-and Frank never notices because the other sensors cover it.” She continues. “S-so I re-purposed them. I-it wasn't even that hard, I j-just had to add one of the focuses that Brigitte got me a-and do a little work on them.”

“I-it's too big to fit on a weapon though.” She says, after a second. “A-and it needs magic to work, s-so you have to have witch o-or me to find a witch. B-but it's got a really long range, and I-I think it should work through all kinds of o-other interference. I-I think it can't be jammed.”

That Samantha was incredibly smart wasn't ever really in question- most of you, to be honest, had assumed as much when you'd known her just a short while. This, though, goes beyond that- sensors to detect magic have been a pipe dream for years, but they were always stymied by magic's unique properties. This sensor of hers, though...

As I said in my option, we shouldn't tell the matrons. Merlin has probably been talking to her parents about it, and that's honestly the best path forward with the technology. We don't need to keep it a secret from everybody, but we don't need that hanging in front of all the matrons

Are you including the time we've spent in a hospital bed? Because I think we should, considering that the rest of Spellcaster continued to fly missions.
As for that time when we were rotated back after Alaska, we didn't give anyone a chance to actually test and examine the magic-amplifying effect we produced on Merlin, and it really only seemed to happen the most when we switched to the Wyvern, which could indicate that there's something about the Wyvern's magical suite that helped the feedback loop we had developed between Frank and Merlin.
But since we didn't want anyone to test on us, we won't know until the Wyvern is deployed more and the Navy, Air Force, and Marines start a program to pair up suspected gnomes with witches and see what happens.

Actually, I think number of hours is the more correct measure of when a unit has to be rotated back.
WW2 had something like 150 hours over 50 sorties for the Northwest African theater, while the Southwest Pacific theater had a limit of 300 combat hours.
Of course certain pilots and crews were sent back before they reached those numbers if they were needed as trainers or for fulfilling other needed positions.

[x] Merlin, I want you to keep this a secret, ok? We'll tell Frank too, but no one else.

This is... well, this is simply amazing. And you can think of the immediate firestorm it would ignite among the matrons, should they ever learn about it. It's a given that the Matrons are, by and large, interested in protecting witches and their place in the world- more than a few of them are utterly convinced that as soon as technology exists on a large scale to counter them, witches will be a thing of the past, utterly sidelined and turned into second class-citizens, at best.

Privately, you doubt that, but there's nothing to do with institutionalized paranoia.

“Merlin, hon, I want you to keep this a secret, ok?” You say, leaning back in your- Frank's- seat. “We'll tell Frank, but just the three of us, alright?”

“O-ok.” She sounds confused, but she agrees. “D-did I do something wrong? I can unhook it i-if I did I-I'm sorry....”

“No, No. Nothing like that.” You respond, quickly. “Nothing like that at all. But this is huge, Samantha. People have been trying to make something like this for years. It could cause a lot of problems with the matrons- and most of them would want you to show them how it works, and explain all the theory in it back at some academy.” You don't add in the part where it might involve them separating her and Frank- she doesn't need that, and she already agreed anyway, plus, you'd rather avoid cheap shots you don't need to make.

“O-oh. Ok, Ice. I-I won't tell anyone.” She says, hesitation gone.

“Good girl.” You say, smiling. “Any other amazing pieces of magical technology you want to tell me about?”

“N-nothing I can t-think of.” She responds. “I-I think I'm done, Ice. 'T-Till Frank gets better, we can't really do anything else. T-thank you for helping.”

“Of course.” You respond, smiling. “Just let me know when you need help, ok?”

“O-ok. I'm going to go ahead a-and shut everything down, y-you can leave if you want.”

You take off the headset, resting it on the back of the ejection seat. You only fumble for a minute for the toggle, raising the seat up to it's upper limit and stepping out onto the hard shell of the cockpit. You still have to look down as you make your way to the ladder, noting there's sensors studded all over the jet- you didn't know that.

“So what was that all about, Ice?” Patty asks, helping you down off the ladder. “She's been spending a lot of time up there, something wrong with her jet?”

You shake your head. “Nothing wrong, no.” You say, trying to think of a convincing lie. “Just a feature of the combat network she wanted to show me, is all. She just needed some one up front to hit a few buttons and tell her what came up on a screen.”

“That's not too bad then. After my last time in there...” She says, trailing off.

You nod. “Fair enough. Nothing bad this time though.”

Samantha pops up out of the jet a minute later, her bag on her lap. You notice she's bareleg, like a proper witch now. You nod to yourself- you'd noticed earlier, but it looks like she's making it a habit, now.

“Well, kiddo, what now?” Patty asks her, catching Samantha's bag as she tosses it down, then helping her off the ladder as well. “You're done with the jet?”

She nods. “Mhmm. W-we can airlift it, when they're ready. F-frank won't like it, though.”

You laugh. “Frank will have to deal with the fact that he can't fly a jet off a carrier while in a coma, I think.”

Merlin looks at you blankly for a second, then nods. “Y-yeah, I guess not. I-I'm done though, a-anything else can wait.”

[] “Sounds good, I'll have them lift it out as soon as they can.”
[] “I'll let Katya or Rosalie know, then. They'll deal with it whenever they get the chance.”

[x] “I'll let Katya or Rosalie know, then. They'll deal with it whenever they get the chance.”

You nod. “I'll let Katya or Rosalie know, then. They'll handle it whenever a lift comes up.”

“Ought to be soon.” Patty remarks, looking over at the empty area where your striker racks were. “We're due into the castle, what? Tomorrow?”

You nod. “I have to report to the acting castle commander tomorrow. She's already promised to stay out of our hair as long as we behave and obey a few rules.” you say. “Keep in mind, up till just recently, it was an active academy, and there's going to be a lot of Matrons there.”

“What kind of rules?” Nicole asks, the first she's spoken the entire time you've been here.

“Well, one of us has to be with Frank whenever he's out of the hangar or the squadron area.” You say, carefully. “And the place doesn't have proper plumbing, there's an old roman bath built on a hot spring so-”

“Frank's going to hate that.” Patty says. “One of us has to escort him to bathe?”

You shrug. “Not really, there's a designated time for Males down there. We just have to make sure he doesn't get into any place he's not supposed to go.”

She nods. “I'm fine with it.” She looks ready to say something else, then casts a sidelong glance at Nicole. “We'll deal.”

Both Patty and Nicole nod. “Good. You two can head over if you're not doing anything else here, Maybe get with Katya and Rosalie before you do and see if they need help.” You say. “Take Samantha with you if she wants to go back to the Mercy.”

She nods. “I-I am. I-is Rachel there?”

You nod. “She's on a double so I can take care of the last bits of the move.”

Merlin nods, but doesn't respond.

“Alright.” You say, turning to walk off. “I'll see you three when we're at our castle.”

And that's it for the night!

Next week we'll be back on with 89 proper- a return to the Frankening.

Should that be the Frankening occurs? not sure. hahahaha

Anyway, yeah. It's been a rough couple weeks, honestly, and It's kind of degraded my already admittedly poor running, here, so I'm sorry about that. I'm kinda hoping it's not the 'curse' or whatever, but if it is, whatever, fuck it, I'll go call up my friend and have her do some voodoo shit for me, she owes me anyhow.

Anyway, next week we *should* be back on at our regular tuesday time, work permitting. if not, keep an eye on the twitter, and I'll keep it updated!

The problem I was running into was I was really having trouble getting notes set up for a thread. I mean, yeah, he was a test pilot for years, and Anastasia developed close ties with the holding in Chicago, but as far as it went, their lives were relatively calm, post-war.

Of course, that means it's open for any writefags that want to come in, I imagine the '50s and '60s had enough interesting material for a story or two, hahaha.

It's less "lol communication & nejkid spess time" and more "individuals who are supernaturally skilled at a given, narrow skillset/characteristic"
>>
>>29225747
also to add to that, most men who are born a gnome don't even realize they ARE a gnome. they have no clue as to what skillset/characteristic they are gnome at. they mostly have to stumble onto it blindly.
>>
>>29225663
Male magic that expresses itself as extreme skill/luck/improbability concerning some particular facet.

Most notably and apparently common being a sort of technomancy that can influence and increase the capability of machines. Pushing a plane harder than it should, causing planes to break, causing guns to jam, lights to burn out, clocks to perfectly synchronize.

Other demonstrated gnome abilities include: improbably aiming skills, and "Fire-watcher. Camp guard. Outer rider. Lots of names, but they all relate to the same idea - a man-at-arms skilled at finding that which is hidden, at sensing danger before it comes."

Anyway, the implication was that Frank + Merlin is pushing the plane so hard Frank is nearly killing himself being subjected to all those stresses and unless he gets some fancy russian gizmos he probably won't last much longer flying as he is now.

Here's muh archive, found an error in the previous attempt at posting: http://pastebin.com/u/HORRUU-NEEEETOOH

The briefing had been short and to the point. By now there were enough rumors flying among the witches that there wasn't a whole lot of surprise when Holly announced that yes, the Russians were sending their night witches forward for some extremely aggressive recon closer to Elemdorf. She openly admitted that she'd almost been made a statistic by one such Russian, which got a few gasps of surprise, and Holly swore she heard a few groans of disappointment as well. Apparently, some of the witches liked the rumors of her getting into some sort of extended heroic fist fight in mid-air better than the desperate fight for survival it actually was.

Still, nobody really disagreed with Holly's plan to counter this new theat: Combat Spread now meant no more than 500 feet away from your wingwitch in any given direction, and witch pairs would be able to count on at having another pair within several miles of them during any given patrol. There'd also be an increase in the number of patrols being flown overall, both by steelwings and witches, effective immediately. On the witch side of things, the increased workload was a burden that the 3rd Wing was going to take the brunt of until they could confirm that this particular threat had passed, or it was dealt with decisively. Either way, if the Soviet night witches wanted a fight, they'd get one, and hopefully be smothered or disuaded by superior numbers.

Holly didn't say it out loud, but she wasn't looking forward to the extra flight hours under these conditions. Even with 'go juice' and high-calorie suplements, and enforced two hour crew rest between patrols, it would be a total of ten hours in the air for today alone. Being the Wing Commander, she put herself and Chris into the next patrol that would be heading out after the briefing. Chances were that she'd likely pass out the moment a bed was in sight.
>>
>>29226259
It was far from an ideal solution, but the situation on the ground after the Tanana pocket fell was somewhat fluid. The Soviets had managed to link two significant formations of troops and armor in the aftermath of the American retreat, and those night witches flying closer to Elemdorf was evidence enough that the reds were looking for a way to deal with the airbase in the near future, should the opportunity present itself.

In addition to the witches at the briefing, Holly had made sure the 3rd Wing's maintenance crews (now permanently attached, she reminded herself) had been able to listen in on the whole thing. They were going to have a lot of work ahead of them, and it was only fair for them to know why, as well as what to expect.

Giving the briefing did a lot to clear Holly's mind and calm her heart. Actually taking action, doing the job she was trained for and had earned through her own diligence felt right, like a return to the way things were supposed to be.

After dismissing the Wing, she made her way over to her weapons. They were already neatly arranged on the table, the necessary cleaning gear already set up for her. It wasn't quite warm boots or blankets, but it did make her smile to know that someone was looking out for her.

"You're really at home giving orders, huh?" Will Wilkins said from behind. This startled her so much that she almost leapt into the air.

"You-!" She was red with embarrassment. "Please don't sneak up on me like that!"

"Sorry, sorry, I didn't think I was sneaking up on you!" he raised his arms reflexively to parry any punches that came his way, laughing as he did. Holly sighed, smoothing down her uniform and turning back to her weapons. Half way through disassembling her assault rifle she set the parts down, noticing that Wilkins was leaning against her strikers, watching her as she worked.
>>
>>29226300

"Can I ask you something Will?"

"Sure."

"Do you...personally set these up for me?"

"Yeap," He pointed to her M-16. "You tend to start with the rifle, then move on to your sidearm...and then your other sidearm. Sometimes you start with that one." He shook his head. "A Colt Python-"

"Colt Python Hunter? Yes, I carry it, and have used it!" She whirled back on Wilkins in a huff. "Gawd, are you gonna-"

"Applaud your choice in firearms?" He smirked. "If you let me."

"It was a present from the folks." Holly's expression brightened up the moment picked up the Colt, checking it to see if it was loaded before twirling it around her finger with highly-practiced ease before setting it back down. "You could say that it's my very favorite gun."

"Cowboy hat, boots, revolver," he coughed. "Poncho."

"Y-yeah." The poncho he'd given to her was doing a fantastic job of keeping her extra-warm all of the sudden.

"This is as good a time as any, I've got a quick question for you too, Holly."

"Go for it."

"You wanna watch a movie?"
>>
>>29226338
"What?! Right now?!" She almost dropped the stock of her rifle to the floor, catching it at the last moment while Will laughed. "But I sortie in an hour!"

"Well of course not now!" Will said. "I mean when you actually have time."

"Wh-where did that come from all the sudden?" Holly eyed the the Tech Sergeant with suspicion.

"I remembered that I have The Wild Bunch on VHS," Will said sheepishly. "I figure I should take that as a no, but I just thought, given your get-up, that you'd like to-"

"Y-yes! I- no, I didn't say no, I mean-" Holly stopped in order to take a breath, still flustered by the invitation. "I haven't seen that movie in forever, I definitely want to watch it again!" She managed to look incredibly uncomfortable and apologetic all at once. "I don't know if I'll be up for it tonight to be honest, given the new patrol schedule."

"It doesn't have to be tonight, the tape's going nowhere," Will chuckled. "Why don't I make this easy, you tell me when you have the time."

"Okay." She turned away from Will, feigning to be inspecting the barrel of her M-16, missing the fact that she'd managed to knock the bolt carrier off the table until she started looking for it.

"You do seem to be doing better," he said as he walked over to retrieve the fallen part for Holly.

"I am, yeah," Holly said, holding up her hand to accept the bolt carrier. "Nothing a good nights rest couldn't help, right?"

"That's good." His expression suggested that he didn't quite believe her.

"Sorry I worried you, I...yeah." She turned away from him again, turning the bolt carrier around in her hands nervously.

"The El-Tee-Cee mentioned my visit this morning, didn't she?" Wilkins sighed.

"Chris meant well," Holly slowly began to reassemble the weapon. "You're a man. There's no way she wouldn't tell me about something you said or did. But at any rate, I think I've finally got some things figured out. you don't have to worry about me anymore."
>>
>>29226393
"I'm worried because you looked ready to burn-out, Colonel," Wilkins said quietly. "It's hard to watch that happen to someone I admire." He had to act fast to catch the M16 as it fell out of Holly's hands.

"Admire?"

"Before transferring to your wing, I lead the ground crews for the 187th Strike Witch Wing, and before that, I came out of my tech school and cut my teeth working with the 58th. None of their COs would have included us in a briefing like the one you gave just now. With those girls, we'd suddenly have an increased workload, no explanations until after the fact." Wilkins looked thoughtful for a moment. "I guess that's when I really started drinking coffee, now that really look back..."

"That's not special-" Holly started, before growing angry at the flight wings Wilkins had mentioned. "Are you serious?"

"Well, I'm obviously not a witch, so there's probably something I'm not aware of. Whatever that is, it's never been an issue with the 3rd Wing. I've been a part of this wing for over a year now, I've been under *your* command, and I know how much you care about your subordinates." He cracked a wry smirk. "Even if you used to only chat with us support crew bums in passing at best."

"But why would those witches neglect their ground crew?" Holly was still trying to understand what the hell Will's previous commanders were thinking, completely missing the compliments being paid to her.

"Maybe I worded it badly. It wasn't that they neglected us, it was that we knew, for certain, that we were not in the same world." Will said. "It's different with you. You're focused on the Wing as a whole, it's something I- we appreciate."

"I'm..." Holly paused, the rest of Will's words finally hitting home. "I'm not sure you should be thanking me for doing my job," she managed to say.

"You looked like you needed a reminder." Will set the rifle back on the table carefully. "After Tanana, something happened to you."
>>
>>29226435

"It's been a rough few days," Holly said simply. She opened her mouth to say more, but decided against it. For his part, Will merely nodded with some level of understanding.

"I could tell."

"M-maybe I will see that movie with you tonight." Holly MacLeod took another look at William Wilkins, as though for the first time. His black hair was cropped short to match the grooming standards almost perfectly, save for the very slight stubble on his face, probably missed a spot or two shaving in the morning. Green eyes, sharp looking features overall, concern for her written all over his face. "Yeah. I am scheduled to get back from my second flight by-" she pulled the clipboard away from the strap around her thigh to check the flight time estimates, "2130, is that alright, or too late-"

"I'll be waitin' for you," he said with wink. "Shall we get your preflight checks done?"

"But my weapons-"

"Let one of the O-boys handle it. Don't worry, I won't let nobody touch the Python." And that was that. He moved a gantry into place so she could climb up to her strikers. After summoning her familiar (and crying for Will to PLEASE catch her hat before it got blown away), they ran through the traditional startup procedures, and once again, everything had gone perfectly. With less than an hour to go before her first patrol, the two had to sprint to the mess in hopes of snagging something quick and easily portable to scarf down. It was different from hanging around Chris or any of the other girls from the wing, but different in a good way. She found herself wishing they had more time to chat as opposed being in such a rush.

She also found herself wanting to hear him say that he'd be waiting for her again, too. That had been surprisingly cool.

The intensified patrol schedule for the witches had gotten immediate results. A flight of four MiG-29's had jumped a pair of Eagles on their way back to Elemdorf, getting into a turning fight that the Americans stood to lose. A quartet of witches converged on the scuffle from two directions, driving the MiGs off and claiming one. A similar incident involving Phantom Wild Weasels and Fishbeds cost the Russians a forward SAM site and three '21s in exchange for two Phantoms. USAF witch presence was such that when the PJs had been sent in to recover the Phantom crews, the Russians didn't try to contest them for very long, losing another '21 to Holly's M-16 in the process. Two Soviet witches made a brief appearance, but were turned away by the superior numbers of USAF sparkles.

Unfortunately there hadn't been much time to celebrate the victories of the day. As soon as Holly and Chris landed from their first patrol, a jeep was waiting to take them to their barracks for enforced crew rest.

The real success Holly was hoping for came later in the evening. Another team of witches a good hundred miles east of Holly's position, had been vectored in on a lone Soviet night witch matching the description of the one that had bounced her the other day. The red hadn't even considered a stunt as brazen as last night's, bugging out almost immediately. Elsewhere, it was clear that the Soviets were pulling back their sparkles in response to the 3rd Wing's more aggressive stance. This had the added bonus of making the second patrol of the day refreshingly boring.

"Helluva day," Holly yawned into her radio. She and Chris were designated RHINO 1-1 and 1-2 respectively. Two other girls from the Mudhens made up the second half of their flight. Already replaced by another quartet of witches in their assigned sector, Holly was more than happy to be leading her group back home.
>>
>>29226610

Even after grabbing two hours of sleep between sorties and scarfing down a dozen of the penut-butter and chocolate chip flavored energy bars (she'd asked Wilkins to hunt that particular flavor down, she didn't like the alternatives), she was feeling a lot more drained from this second patrol compared to after the first.

Sleep would have to wait, as she did tell Wilkins that she'd see the movie with him. She found herself checking the clock on her MFD repeatedly, frowning each time she did. She'd be late getting back to Elemdorf.

"Heeeeeeeyyyyyyy Eagle." Chris called out, a lazy barrel roll taking her over Holly. Inverted, she looked 'up' at her friend. "Ya hit 29 today. Still the top scorer in the Wing."

"Only by one." Holly took another furtive glance at her MFD.

"Yeah, I suppose Richards'll catch up sooner or later." Chris shuddered for emphasis. "Scary lady, that one- Stop checking your MFD like that."

"Wh-what?" Holly felt like a kid caught with one hand in the cookie jar. "I'm not-"

"You looked at it like ten times just now."

"Just checking the time! That's all!"

"I'm pretty sure he'll still be waiting for you in the hangar," Chris smiled. "Warm boots, blankets, and everything."

"You know what?" Holly snapped. "You're right. And it will be *awesome*."

"Oh! To be pampered as much as my commanding officer is," Chris wailed dramatically, the second pair of witches laughing over the flight's shared frequency. "By the way, we're definitely going to have a movie night at the barracks."

"We are?"

"Hell yeah we are!" Chris gave Holly a punch to the shoulder. "We did good today, and as I recall, you get to pick the first movie of the night."

"I already have plans to see a movie with Wilkins though." Frowning, Holly checked her MFD again. Definitely late, almost an hour at this point. How could that even happen? She didn't recall taking the flight on any detours. "You can take my place though, I am sorry I can't make it, though. The wing more than deserves to celebrate, so don't wait up on my account."

Chris made some sort gasping, choking sound.

"You have a DATE with Wilkins?!" The blonde managed to ask. "Whenwhenwhen was THIS a thing?!" She was immediately joined by the other two witches, their questions exploding over the radio: Who was he? Who was *she*? A pilot? Ground crew? Would they get invited to the witch barracks?

"It's just a movie you guys!" Holly laughed. "This guy from our ground crew invited me to see The Wild Bunch tonight. And no, he's not coming to our barracks girls, you all know the rules, so it'll probably be at his-"

It was at this time that Holly MacLeod fully grasped what she'd agreed to.

"At his place?" Chris asked. "At WILKINS' place!?"

"I didn't...really think of it like that," Holly mumbled, her face feeling as though she'd been under the sun for hours. Unconsciously, Holly fed more magic into her strikers, accelerating ahead of Chris and the other two witches, weaving and rolling back and forth in the sky.

"H-hey, slow down there cowgirl," Chris said nervously. She'd never seen Holly like this before. "Don't wanna make yerself sick before you see him tonight."

'I've never been asked out before. By anyone.'

Afterburners roaring, Holly streaked towards the snow and ice below, pulling away with a few thousand feet to spare into a single perfect loop that brought her back into tight formation with the other witches. She couldn't hide the smile on her face as she slid into station next to Chris.

"I guess it is a date then." In her mind, Holly was celebrating and panicking at the same time.
