Battle of Varda is almost over. Krodian Mountain range is yours, with thousands of enemy prisoners awaiting their fate in a concentration camp that you set up in the valley where they surrendered. Ferrum Frateris forces are still waging a desperate battle in the beautiful meadows of the Green Belt, but Nestorian Scitarii Cohorts are decimating them with mechanical efficiency. Their Commander, Hannah Dossar, promised you victory within 72 hours. The only source of threat to your total domination of Varda is the main Frateris militia force with the remnants of their armoured force. They are preparing to counter attack your forces at the planetary palace, where mere 4 squads of your Veterans are trying to coordinate evacuation of more than 90 000 civilians.

=Briefing=
Orbital lift from Krodian mountains to Novomark is possible, but you'd have to roll each time for weather conditions, organisation, etc. Estimated time for relocation of 3 squads by a single Thunderhawk would be from 6 to 24 hours depending on the roll. Alternatively Thunderhawk can carry one of your Predator Tanks and a squad. Fortress of Vengeance cannot use orbital lift while the airspace is not completely under your control. Travelling by ground will take it 2 to 8 weeks to reach Novomark. Scitarii regiments can send some of their forces to Novomark, but you are not sure about their relocation capabilities, also splitting their forces will endanger their strategical initiative in the Green Belt.

What shall you do, milord?

We need one or two devourer dropships from the AdMech to transport our forces from the Krodian Mountains to Novomark.

Leave maybe 40 Tactical Marines of the 5th Company to keep the prisoners contained, rest of us head to Novomark to assist the Veterans there.

Also where is Horim? Last I checked he went MIA in Novomark.

5th Company Leutenant Dagobert smiles at you:
>Milord, they are disarmed and are being held in a prison camp, there is no way they could use their numbers against us in this situation. I could do the same task with just two squads. Take the other two squads to Novomark, you will need them.

Scitarii Commander Dossar replies to your request:
>Unfortunately we have deployed out forces with the only Devourer Dropship that we have on "Technohammer", however our combat doctrine forbids us to use this vessel while our own forces are engaged in active combat. If through some unforseen circumstances we would need to quickly evacuate my Scitarii, "Nergal" must be available at all times for our use. However we will be able to lend it to you as soon as we are done with the Ferrum Frateris in the Green Belt.

>How large is the main Frateris militia force?
In Novomark - around 6000 strong with support of around 100 combat vehicles, including Immolators(which your men came to hate in thi campaign) and some Penitent engines. They have sporadic air support, but as Dossar's men are making progress in the Green Belt it's decreasing. They are planning to retake the planetary palace and civilians, which they have already planned to use as a bargaining chip.

>Have our three Thunderhawks transport as many marines as they can carry to Novomark. Have Thunderhawks conduct bombing runs over Frateris infantry if possible.
You have only 1 Thunderhawk available, check Chapter Deployments - other 2 are away(but should reach the system within a week or two). Done, 30 marines from the 1st Company with Chapter Master and Trianon are being sent to Novomark(please confirm this).

In Novomark you have 44 Veterans with Macedon and Dragrock. You also have 522 men from the 1st Novomark Irregulars, a regiment you've formed this morning from the volunteers from the civilians you've rescued.

However they are still scattered after yesterdays attack and demoralised by the surrener of their force in the Krodian mountains. Ok, let's think about it. How shall you meet the enemy:

a) Use the PHQ as a defensive outpost to buy time for the refugees to reach the surrounding jungle (60 km from the PHQ, refugees move around 1+d3 km per hour, convoy is 10 km long)
b) Hope that booby traps by themselves will be enough to stop enemy advance(enemy will dismantle them in d4 hours) and retreat with the refugees, fight a rearguard action if it comes down to it
c) same as B, except if you'll see enemy approaching, order your troops to quickly retreat to the jungle and leave the refugees to their own fate. Afterall, we can rescue them again, right?

Choose your course of action and roll d100.

Roll d100 for the other 2 thunderhawks to transport marines.

>Use waves of Fighters from the Aspera Dominus to achieve air superiority.
I am afraid you do not have a dedicated airforce for such actions. Your Fury Interceptor are specialised for void combat and do not have ability to operate in atmosphere - that would be highly dangerous.

>Our forces arriving by Thunderhawks deploy to the Planetary HQ and reinforce its defence.
>Once te enemy being their attack. Have Macedon and his 6th attack them from the rear.

Plan d) 30 marines defend the PHQ with the rest of Veterans and CM, while 6th Company(who are atm reorganising) will try to attack enemy from behind. Please bear in mind, that enemy knows that 6th company is located just beyond Feiros river and will leave part of it's forces to contain them, so this action might not be as effective as you might expect. Also, just as you used Feiros to help you defend against enemy, enemies will use it now against you.

Prepare to detonate the planetary HQ when we leave it and the enemy move inside.

>>29215319
How about this:
We will boobytrap the PHQ and then get out of there ASAP. Then we shall go east to get around the enemy main force. Then we split into 2 groups.
Group 1 will protect the civilians while Group 2 will go around the Enemy main force and attack the rear guard. 6 th company will attack simultaneously with the second group. After crushing the rearguard we will unite with the 6th and move toward the enemy main force which should either turn around to face us or will go after the refugees. In case a) we will try to divide them further. In case b) we will try to attack them from the rear.

>Battle plan should be a fighting retreat, just behind the civilians, keeping the enemy away and stalling for time until the AdMech and 7th can get to us.
Don't bet your money on them, it will take them another three days to defeat the enemies(and that's only an estimate) and after that they will need to arrive and deploy for battle, which could take another day or more).
>Prepare to detonate the planetary HQ when we leave it and the enemy move inside.
That's possible, but please bear in mind that PHQ is a huge complex of buildings, most of which are ruined right now, so there's no way to blow it up properly. But you can blow up the few buildings that still stand.

Reinforce the Planetary HQ and repel the first assault, inflict as many casualties as we can, pour it on them.

When they retreat to regroup, retreat after sabotaging the HQ, poison the water, supplies, grenades&tripwires in the supply rooms etc. Particularly booby trap ammo & fuel which they'll definitely want.

Have Scouts and wounded Marines booby trap flanking roots around the refugee convoy, along with any of our irregulars with experience in explosives (miners etc.).

As the enemy force reaches the outskirts of the PHQ, the last line of your traps spring into action. Controlled demolition takes down whole building on the enemy tanks, seemingly harmless crates of supplies explode with shrapnel, lacerating dozens of troops around them, even the streetlights bring death when custom-made grenades explode, raining death from above on passing Frateris. However enemy is not easily deterred - he has numbers, armour and desperate faith on his side.

Roaring Immolator tank smashes through a thin decoratve wall and rolls into the main square, firing it's guns as if it was Horus himself it was fighting. It's brief show of force is interrupted by an accurate krak missile that one of your devastators released from the top balcony. Another two Chimeras, that tried to rush through the courtyard, meet the same fate. One of them gets stuck when it's tracks are downed. The fire literally cooks everyone inside alive. Chapter Master observes it over the battlements and smiles to himself, thinking that this is the least these zealots deserve for daring to invade his world, the world under protection of the Ghosts of Retribution.

However enemy is desperate and it attacks without a thought about possible casualties. Your original plan, which you prepared together with Trianon while in transit to Novomark, was to await enemies to finish their first assault and then retreat. However that was not meant to happen...

Your force inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy, but for some reason they kept pressing, bodies piling and wrecked machines clogging up narrow streets of the Planetary palace. Suddenly, you realise what is their intent. From behind the enemy assault force appears a squad of Penitent Engines, probably the last of the terrifying units under enemy's command. They charge onward, decapitating your brothers, jumping and climbing over fortified buildings with their mechanical limbs, infiltrating your lines and sowing chaos among your men. You send reinforcements to intercept them, but by the time they reach the Northern Palace, they find only a bloody massacre and enemy troops pouring in through the breach. Only Terminators could hope to fight these abominations on equal ground, and they are busy holding the front gate. Now you understand their plan. There will be no second assault. No regroup. No time for you to retreat in an orderly fashion. You run through the empty halls towards the sounds of battle, when your vox comes to life, it's Trianon:

>Brother! We are surrounded in the North-Western Tower! It's just me and two squads, mixture of 5th Company and a few Veterans from the 1st. We are under attack from Penitent Engines! Those things took Brother Markus just a moment ago and ripped him to pieces in front of our eyes, but I fried two of them... Those monstrosities... Master, we have been outmaneouvred, but we still have strategical advantage. Retreat and regroup! We will hold them! But you better be back before we are done, I'd hate to have my last stand against these heretics...

Apparently Trianon is cut-off from your force and is under heavy enemy attack. North-Western Tower is probably the most fortified position in the palace, he will be able to hold out for some time. Will you use this opportunity to fall back or will you continue to fight no matter the consequences?

As soon as you are sure, that all of the men are gone, you draw Ironhaunt and charge at the enemy, straight through the third floor window. With shards of glass and pieces of plasteel you fly, accelerated by the power of your charge, over a company-strong enemy detachment and land on the other side of the street. "Star of Macragge" hisses in your hand and punches through 7 troopers, before hiting the side of Chimera and melting it's tracks. With the other hand you swing Ironhaunt and decapitate three closest enemies. You then use the shock of your sudden assault to break through their lines, while killing or simply crushing another dozen of damned zealots. You are soon close to the entrance of North Western Tower, las-shots and grenades are flying around you, but you are too fast for them. Then comes the real challenge. Two Penitents appear out of nowhere, their mono-blade saws reaching out for your throat. Your instincts kick-in without a second thought and psychic power rushes through your hands, frying both beasts, ending their penitence at last. Then you rush towards the gate, but the rest of the pack is already rushing at you. If not for the electromagnetic field generated by Ironhaunt, they would have definitely caught up with you, but at the last second Trianon appears above the barricade and releases a wave of disruptive energies that crush the inner workings of the closest monstrosity and drives away the others.

Enemy force must be favoured by some higher power. As your Thunderhawks approach for a third run over the enemy positions, enemy suddenly reveals that they were keeping a battery of Hydra Flak Tanks just behind the ruined complex. When they open fire, sky is filled with rounds, all looking for a target. One by one, your Thunderhawks dive to the ground. One of them gets as far as Feiros river before it's engines finally fail and it hits the water, others fall in the city. Your forces fare no better - wave of enemy armour, unchecked by your birds, rolls over the ruins and crushes your defenders underneath. It forces your brothers to retreat, leaving you with Trianon stranded in the sea of enemies alone and without support. Penitent Engines, furious about your earlier trick, this time act more carefully and strike from behind, severing poor Trianon in half and cutting a bloody swathe through your ranks. Finally they reach you and engage you in a duel of such fiercity that has never been seen on this planet before. You kill three of them, before they take you captive. They don't want to do it, but those are the orders. Take the Chapter Master. Use him to achieve your goals. You, ofcourse, didn't surrener easily, they had to hold you down, while one of them sawed off your legs and your arms. Afterwards they pumped you full of drugs to stop you from casting psy powers, this was the only way to get you off the battlefield. The rest of your force suffered crushing defeat and enemies took Novomark. 6th Company was able to retreat, but your own force was so badly beaten that only two terminators survived, one of them without his legs. Refugee column was captured and this time enemies learned from their mistakes - all of the civilians were put to death immediately and their bodies dumped in Feiros river. This is a black day for the Chapter, maybe even the blackest ever. You may roll your toughness to see how quickly will you regain consciousness.

You regain your consciousness in a few hours in some dark dungeon, probably under PHQ, where enemy made his base after their crushing victory. In front of you sits a man in Ecclesiastic robes, slightly smilig:
>Ave, my dear friend. It seems this war is almost over at last. We are glad you decided to show your face and answer for your sins. But worry not. We think there has been a misunderstanding between our forces. We want to release you, but we want you to release us too. Negotiations are already happening. Your man, Macedon, I think, promised us 1000 wealth and a passage off planet if we release you. We are glad to accept such a generous offer. I hope you don't hold a grudge over us regarding your limbs. You were a true Astartes, there was no way to speak with you withtout... Immobilising you. Do you need anything?

You cannot believe this... This is not happening, it's impossible... The Chapter! The future! The mission! Wait, mission? Yes, the one that old man gave you. The one you were born for. You cannot. You cannot die this way. Mission comes first. You have to do your duty! You feel the winds of Fate howl in your ears as reality shatters around you, the monk disappears in mist of something stranger than warp and in a moment you wake up heavily breathing at the entrance to the North Western Tower.
>Is everything alright, milord?
Trianon looks concerned.
>Shall we commence our assault?
You can hear Thunderhawks approaching for the third run and you shudder at the thought of what could have happened.

The force under your command slices through the enemy lines like a hot dagger through butter, leaving nothing but screaming bodies in your wake. Brothers that follow you look at each other puzzled, seeing you decimating enemies with unearthly fury in your eyes. They do not understand, they will never understand what you suffered for them and what you did to make this right. Unlucky Penitent Engines that try to bar your way out of the palace end up crucified on the walls by an Overcharge strike from the Ironhaunt. You hold them there for a minute, until last of your brothers leave, looking at their tortured forms burning alive. This will do. You release the power flow and run out of the building just as the Thunderhawks zero in on the building complex with a 'special' load of high explosives. Explosion can be seen as far beyond Feiros river, drawing attention even from Macedon and his officers. Collapsing building bury more than a thousand men who have entered the palace trying to catch you. Enemies, seeing the terrible carnage and with sun setting in less than an hour, stop their attack and attempt to regroup, thinking about their options. Under constant attack of your Thunderhawks, they are finally demoralised and even their ideals of faith and duty until death are shaken. They send you a representative to offer their surrender. Will you accept him?

The last battle of The Betrayal at Varda is over and Novomark is once more in your hands. In total you have about 8000 prisoners, a few thousands more have been scaterred and fled for the jungle. They will make good targets for our initiates to practice!

However the last battle costs us dearly. 5th company lost 10+d10 marines and 2+d7 devastators to the Penitent Engines. 1st Company lost d10 Veterans and d4 Terminators(separate losses).(this is for the first part of the battle where you rolled 100 for tactical combat and were outmaneouvred badly).

You took loot from the enemy force worth 50 +d20 x 10 wealth.

After a few hours of intensive search you find Horim the Heartless under a pile of rubble, where he was hidden away under collapsed masonry. If he wouldn't have been fallen to the side, he would have dug himself out, but as the force of explosion and the crashing house destabilised him, all he could do for the rest of the battle was to curse from under the rubble.

Also, all of the marines from 6th Company gain Veteran status if you'd want to promote any of them. Your doctrine also improves and there will be other things, but all of that we will finish in the next session.

thank you for playing, this battle of Varda was a real feels train, but now it's over and Chapter can focus on rebuilding itself and preparing for an even more glorious future victories!
